The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of plyometric training on vertical jump performance in tennis athletes. The research group of the study consisted of 25 volunteer tennis athletes between the ages of 12–17. The average age of the athletes in the experimental group (n=12) was 13.75 ± 2.00 years and the average age of the athletes in the control group (n=13) was 13.23 ± 1.30 years. Plyometric training was applied for 8 weeks. Before and after the training period, height, body weight, active jumping (CMJ), active jump with arms free (CMJFA), horizontal jump (HJ), drop jump (DJ), and squat jump (SJ) tests were performed. When the CMJ, SJ and HJ pre-test–post-test results of the experimental group athletes participating in the study were compared, a statistically significant difference (p < .05) was found. However, no statistically significant difference was found when the CMJFA and DJ pre-test–post-test results of the athletes were compared. Although there was no statistically significant difference, 9,46% positive improvement was found in the CMJFA height and 5,50% positive improvement was found in the DJ height of the experimental group athletes. When the test results of the experimental and control group athletes were compared between the groups, a statistically significant difference (p < .05) was found in the SJ test, while no statistically significant difference was found between the groups in the CMJ, HJ, CMJFA, and DJ tests. While a test × group interaction was observed in the SJ test, this interaction was due to the in-group improvements of the experimental group. In conclusion; Plyometric training is thought to be an effective training to improve vertical jump performance (CMJ, SJ, and DJ) in tennis athletes. Testing the benefits of plyometric training on vertical jump with longer-term interventions (≥10 weeks) will provide researchers with clearer findings.

Abstract Background Interpersonal distance (IPD), which reflects the physical space between people, ensures the regulation of social behavior in interaction as part of nonverbal communication. Our research aims to reveal whether there is a difference in personal distance preference between individuals with hearing loss and normal hearing (NH). Methods Thirty-five adults (26.54 ± 7.05 years) were divided into three groups according to hearing status: hearing aid (HA) users, cochlear implant (CI) users, and NH individuals. The participation of individuals with special needs in performance sports has been increasing from past to present. As in athletes with normal development, stages are planned and implemented in accordance with the goals of high-level performance sports. This study aims to determine the functional threshold power (FTP), VO2max and anaerobic threshold values of a cyclist with special needs to create performance prediction for athletes in similar disability groups. Fırat Uğur, a 26-year-old athlete with special needs who has been participating in cycling competitions for three years and has a body weight of 68 kg and a height of 180.5 cm, participated in the current study. In the findings obtained from the study, the normalized power value of the athlete was found as 204.3 watts, the FTP value as 204.3 watts and the relative power value as 3.00 watts / kg. The athlete's VO2max value was 48.3 ml/kg/min; VO2max load was 298 watts, and VO2max heart rate was 175 beats/min, anaerobic threshold VO2 value was 24.7 ml/kg/min, anaerobic threshold load was 103 watts and anaerobic threshold heart rate was 127 beats/min. When the research findings of the cyclists with special needs were compared with the results obtained from the current study, Fırat Uğur's findings were at lower levels. Considering that the athlete has only participated in competitions as a performance athlete for three years, it can be predicted that he will increase his performance level in the following years. It is recommended that the athlete's training be prepared according to the findings obtained and that the performance development be followed with measurements to be made at regular intervals.

The relationship between the reaction time and the total running time of male (n=407) and female (n=345) athletes competing in the 60-meter wind sprint branch at the world indoor championships between 2006 and 2022 and the competition hour was examined in this study. Statistically significant and negative relationships were found between competition hour and athletes' reaction times, competition hour and athletes' competition result ratings in both genders (rho lt;0.040; p lt;0.05). When the subject is examined in terms of the stages of the competitions, no relationship was found for both genders in the final stage while the same relationships were preserved in the semi-final stage. At the qualification stage, a positive relationship was observed between the competition hour and the reaction time in both men (rho=0.25) and women (rho=0.22). In particular, it will be important that the competition time zones in the qualification stage are in similar circadian zones so as not to create a disadvantage among the athletes, and that the competition programs should be prepared by taking the performance-limiting and performance-supporting time zones into account.

The gene, ANKK1 and the polymorphism NM_178510.2:c.2137G > A (rs1800497) has been linked to the exercise addiction. On 6 February, southeastern Turkey and parts of Syria were struck by two powerful earthquakes, one measuring a magnitude of 7.8 and the other, nine hours later, at a magnitude of 7.5. These earthquakes have been recorded as some of the deadliest natural disasters worldwide since the 2010 Haiti earthquake, impacting around 14 million people in Turkey. For trauma survivors, the stressors associated with an event can lead to the development of acute stress disorder (ASD) or other psychiatric disorders. Trauma experiences during adolescence can impact development and affect adolescents differently than adults. Although ASD in adults has been addressed in several studies, there is much less information available about how younger populations respond to acute stress. The aim of our study was to assess the occurrence of ASD among individuals seeking help at the Şanlıurfa Mehmet Akif İnan Research and Training Hospital Child and Adolescent Outpatient Clinic following the 2023 Turkey Earthquakes and the factors associated with acute stress reactions. A child and adolescent psychiatry specialist conducted psychiatric interviews with the adolescents, and the individuals were also asked to complete ‘The National Stressful Events Survey Acute Stress Disorder Short Scale’ (NSESSS) to evaluate acute stress symptoms. ASD diagnoses were established according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) criteria. Results showed that 81.6% of the participants (n = 49) were diagnosed with ASD, and drug treatment was initiated in 61.7% of the cases (n = 37). It was determined that ASD rates did not differ according to gender, and patients without physical injury had higher acute stress symptom scores (p > 0.05). According to the logistic regression models, paternal educational levels and adolescents’ own requests for psychiatric assistance were predictors of acute stress disorder (OR 10.1, β = 2.31, p = 0.006 and OR 16.9, 95 β = 2.83, p = 0.001, respectively). Our findings revealed striking results in demonstrating the need for careful evaluation of adolescents without physical injury in terms of acute stress disorder and the need to pay close attention to the psychiatric complaints of adolescents willing to seek mental health assistance. Moreover, our study suggests that the proportion of adolescents experiencing acute stress symptoms after earthquakes might be higher than previously reported. Estimation of the incidence rate and symptoms of psychiatric distress in the short-term period following a disaster is important for establishing disaster epidemiology and implementing efficient relief efforts in the early stages. The outcomes of this study have the potential to yield novel insights into the realms of disaster mental health and emergency response policies, as well as their pragmatic implementations.

Background and Study Aim. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of e-sports on physical activity level and body composition. Material and Methods. The athletes who participated in the study were 19.92± 2.21 years of age, 1.73±0.04 m body height and 78.35±6.52 kg body weight. A total of 137 athletes participated in the study, including 27 from Turkey, 47 from South Korea and 63 from the United States (USA). The data was collected by e-mail from the sports clubs. The athletes who representing their country in international competitions involved in the study. The data obtained were evaluated in the SPSS program. Results. According to the findings of the study, the body mass index (BMI) of e-sport athletes is 26.03±1.85, the number of physical activity steps is 6646±3400 and the daily e-sport hours are 9.34±1.12. The BMI was determined as USA 26.12, South Korea 26.02 and Turkey 25.84 respectively. The number of physical activity steps was identified as 5255 steps in the US, 7785 steps in South Korea and 7909 steps in Turkey. The present study aimed to examine the vitamin D receptor (VDR), rs2228570 polymorphism, and its effect on elite athletes’ performance. A total of 60 elite athletes (31 sprint/power and 29 endurance) and 20 control/ physically inactive, aged 18–35, voluntarily participated in the study. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) score scale was used to determine the performance levels of the athletes’ personal best (PB). Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed by the genomic DNA isolated from the peripheral blood of the participants. Sports type, sex, and competitive performance were chosen as the parameters to compare within and between the groups by linear regression models. The results showed no statistically significant difference between the CC, TC, and TT genotypes within and between the groups (p > 0.05). Additionally, our results underlined that there were no statistically significant differences for the association of rs2228570 polymorphism with PBs within the groups of the (p > 0.05) athletes. The genetic profile in the selected gene was similar in elite endurance, sprint athletes, and in controls, suggesting that rs2228570 polymorphism does not determine competitive performance in the analyzed athlete cohort.

Vault is one of the main apparatuses for both female and male gymnasts in artistic gymnastics (AG). The optimal vaulting technique depends on many variables, such as the approaching run. Gymnastics is one of the early specialization sports as it is necessary to start training at an early age. For this reason, the aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship among age, biomotor and technical components in relation to the approach run velocity and other variables in AG. Furthermore, similarities and differences between genders were researched. Twenty female and twelve male gymnasts took part in the study. Speed, agility, explosive power, run-up velocity were measured. Additionally, Reactive Strength Index (RSI) and Peak High Velocity distances (PHV_Distance) were calculated. Kinematic parameters during the handspring vault were calculated by a two-dimensional video analysis. A statistical comparison between genders was performed by the Mann Whitney U test. Objective: Fanconi’s anemia (FA) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a progressive pancytopenia,variable congenital abnormalities and an increased risk for the development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The objective of this study is to evaluate AML in the patients with FA diagnosed and followed-up in the Department of Pediatric Hematology at Ankara University School of Medicine in the period between 1964-1995. Methods: A total of 39 patients within the age range 2-14 years (mean 8.2±3.16), 28 male and 11 female were diagnosed as FA on the basis of congenital abnormalities, pancytopenia, bone marrow aplasia and diepoxybutane induced chromosomal abnormalities that observed in all patients. The hereditary and familial basis of FA was apparent in this series. Results: Common abnormalities were growth retardation, café- au- lait spots, hyperpigmentation, microcephaly, finger and thumb deformities,mental retardation and hypogenitalismus. Four AML (10.2%) were observed in our series. Cytogenetic analysis of these cases revealed 46/ XX, dup(3)(q22;q26) t(7;17) (p11;p11) in one where it was unsuccessful in three. Two cases could not achieve remission and died. The other two achieved complete remission and remained in remission for 2 and 6 monthsConclusion: Acute myelomonocytic leukemia in three cases and acute monocytic leukemia in one patient were diagnosed in our series. The patients with FA should be followed with regard to AML and solid tumors. AML and solid tumors should be taken into the consideration as the first manifestation of FA.

Purpose: To determine alterations of the choroidal thickness (CT) and the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) in patients with glomerular hyperfiltration, a marker of early diabetic nephropathy (DN)., Methods: Twenty-two patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) with glomerular hyperfiltration (early DN group) and 28 patients with T2D without DN (NDN group) were included in the study. Patients with diabetic retinopathy were excluded. Parameters including subfoveal CT, the subfoveal choroidal vascularity index (CVI), and total CVI were measured using spectral-domain enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography method., Results: The early DN group included 22 patients and the NDN group comprised 28 patients. The groups were similar in terms of age and sex (p>0.05). The CT values were statistically significantly lower in the early DN group than in the NDN group (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the early DN group and the NDN group in terms of total and subfoveal CVI (p>0.05)., Conclusion: The choroidal thickness decreased in patients with T2D with glomerular hyperfiltration, but there were no differences in CVI when they were compared with patients with T2D without DN., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier B.V. Background: In patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the risk of thromboembolism increases due to hemostatic changes secondary to the primary disease and due to treatment-related factors. In this multicenter study, we aimed to research the frequency of central nervous system (CNS) thrombosis occurring during treatment, hereditary and acquired risk factors, clinical and laboratory features of patients with thrombosis, treatment approaches, and thrombosis-related mortality and morbidity rates in pediatric ALL patients., Procedure: Pediatric patients who developed CNS thrombosis during ALL treatment from 2010 to 2021 were analyzed retrospectively in 25 different Pediatric Hematology Oncology centers in Türkiye. The demographic characteristics of the patients, symptoms associated with thrombosis, the stage of the leukemia treatment during thrombosis, the anticoagulant therapy applied for thrombosis, and the final status of the patients recorded through electronic medical records were determined., Results: Data from 70 patients with CNS thrombosis during treatment, out of 3968 pediatric patients with ALL, were reviewed. The incidence of CNS thrombosis was 1.8% (venous: 1.5 %; arterial: 0.03%). Among patients with CNS thrombosis, 47 had the event in the first 2 months. Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) was the most commonly used treatment with a median of 6 months (min-max: 3-28 months). No treatment-related complications occurred. Chronic thrombosis findings occurred in four patients (6%). In five (7%) patients who developed cerebral vein thrombosis, neurological sequelae (epilepsy and neurological deficit) remained. One patient died related to thrombosis, and the mortality rate was 1.4%., Conclusion: Cerebral venous thrombosis and, less frequently, cerebral arterial thrombosis may develop in patients with ALL. The incidence of CNS thrombosis is higher during induction therapy than during other courses of treatment. Therefore, patients receiving induction therapy should be monitored carefully for clinical findings suggestive of CNS thrombosis., (© 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Purpose: To analyze the differences in terms of choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and choroidal thickness (CT) between the airline pilots-cabin crew and the normal population., Methods: In this prospective study, 50 airline pilots-cabin crew (study group) and 50 healthy individuals (control group) were included for comparison. For each participant, one eye, the eye with the higher OCT scan score index, was enrolled. Subfoveal CT and CVI were measured using a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography system with enhanced depth imaging., Results: There were no significant differences in terms of age and sex between the study and control groups. The mean CT was 368.5 ± 79.6 in the control group vs. 424.9 ± 80.7 in the study group (p = 0.001). CT was significantly thicker in the study group. The mean CVI was 64.3 ± 1.5 in the control group and 66 ± 3.1 in the study group (p = 0.5). There was no significant correlation between the study and control groups in terms of CVI., Conclusion: Airline pilots-cabin crew had thicker CT, but there were no differences in CVI when they were compared with healthy subjects. The effect of unique occupational exposures of airline pilots-cabin crew to the pathophysiology of choroidal structural alterations needs further investigation., (© 2022. Objective: Lichen planus (LP) is an idiopathic, chronic inflammatory disease. Chronic inflammatory diseases can cause metabolic complications. In the literature, data related to the relationship between lichen planus and metabolic syndrome (MS) are limited. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between MS and lichen planus with disease activity., Methods: The patients diagnosed with lichen planus at the dermatology outpatient clinic between January 2018 and January 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. 98 lichen planus cases, age- and sex-matched 99 controls, 197 cases in total were included in the study., Results: Of the 98 lichen planus cases included in the study, 60 (61%) were women. The mean age of the patients was 49.3 ± 14.4, and the average disease duration was 33.5 ± 31.4 months. 55 (55%) of the patients in the control group were female, and the mean age of the control group was 50 ± 13.2. The body mass index of LP cases was 29.5 ± 5.8, in the control group was 25.8 ± 3.7. Metabolic syndrome was found in 47 (48%) of 98 cases with lichen planus and 32.3% in the control group. MS in the lichen planus group was significantly higher than the control group (P = .025). Metabolic syndrome was detected in the oral lichen planus at the rate of 60% (12 cases). Although the incidence of MS was more common in the oral lichen planus, it was not statistically significant (P = .29). While no significant relationship was found between oral disease severity and metabolic syndrome (P = .19), a significant correlation was found between cutaneous disease severity and metabolic syndrome (P = .023)., Discussion: The risk of mucosal malignancy that can occur when following LP cases has been known for a long time. Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) leads to physical activity limitation and a significant reduction in quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between The COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score and peak expiratory flow (PEF), and the factors effecting hospital admission rates of patients with COPD., Methods: This observational study was conducted prospectively. CAT score was calculated and PEF measured at the time of emergency department admission. Descriptive statistics were expressed as number (n), percentage (%), and mean ± standard deviation. Chi-Square and correlation tests were used for statistical analyses. A p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: Of 123 patients included in the study, 85 (69.1%) were male and 38 (30.9%) were female. Pulse pressure, pH, blood urea nitrogen, oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry (SpO 2 ), PO 2 , PCO 2, and SpO 2 values on arterial blood gas analysis, and PEF value were significantly correlated to CAT score (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: High CAT score and low PEF value can be used to make the decision of hospitalization from emergency department in acute exacerbations of COPD., (Copyright © 2016 National Medical Association.
