Although Britain is rich in archaeological and architectural treasures many Christians are unaware of their cultural heritage and its value in communicating the Christian message today. This essay discusses the remarkable Christian history of West Cumbria in the hope that it will encourage the best sort of cultural tourism.

This article questions Richard Steigmann-Gall's claim that leading National Socialists were essentially ‘Christian’ and that neo-pagan ideas played an insignificant role in the ideology of nazism. This is done by examining the argument of Dr Goebbels' novel Michael. Ein deutsches Schicksal in Tagebuchblättern (1929) to reveal its anti-Christian structure. Speeches and other statements by and about Goebbels are then looked at to show that his work is consistent with German neo-pagan thought. The role of Alfred Rosenberg is then re-examined, demonstrating that, contrary to the claims of Steigmann-Gall and many other writers, his work was highly regarded by Hitler and other nazi leaders and played a prominent role in promoting the National Socialist Weltanschauung. Finally, the argument is reviewed in terms of historical method, the problem of using literature to illustrate an author's ideas, and the researcher's encounter with a totally alien outlook.

Jakob Wilhelm Hauer (1881–1962) was a missionary to India and later both a professor of religious studies at Tubingen and a founder of a new religion, called the German Faith Movement (Deutsche Glaubensbewegung, DGB). According to Hauer, his movement was the essence of National Socialism. Because some contemporary scholars try to distance Hauer's scholarship and the DGB from National Socialism, this paper reviews existing literature about the Hauer phenomenon. It does so in light of the authors' research in the Federal Archives of Koblenz and Berlin and the German Literature Archive in Marbach. Hauer's personal development and determination to further Nazism are traced. Together, the literature review and Hauer's view of religion show that his religious thought and his Nazi politics are inseparable.

This paper responds to criticism of our earlier work on the German anticult debate by Ms. Schoen and Prof. Dr. Seiwert. In it we argue that Schoen misunderstood and misread our article as a result of her obsession with published texts. Both Schoen and Seiwert underestimate the importance of history in creating the ethos that shapes the German debate about new religions.

This paper examines the ideology of the German anti-cult movement. It also discusses the unique problems facing the German government resulting from right-wing extremism and the role of German cult experts in defining new religions as verfassungsfeindlich, hostile to the constitution.

John Ruskin’s comment that English Cathedrals are ‘Sermons in Stone’ applies equally well to parish churches and other ancient religious sites. This article explores the rich Christian heritage of Cumbria and seeks to encourage British Christians to recognize the rich cultural treasures that are all around them in the belief that an awakened sense of Christian history will help revive British Christianity by providing an evangelical resource that has great potential in terms of cultural tourism.

L'A. se penche sur les mouvements religieux africains en prenant plus particulierement le cas d'Isaiah Shembe (1869?-1935) en Afrique du Sud, fondateur de la Nazareth Baptist Church (amaNazareta Zulus, egalement nommee Eglise independante). Il relate la biographie d'Isaiah Shembe, predicateur itinerant proche de groupes baptistes et de missionnaires devenus prophetes independants. En 1911 Shembe fonde l'Eglise independante regroupant aujourd'hui un demi million d'adeptes. L'A. relate l'histoire de ce mouvement religieux et s'interroge sur sa nature et ses rapports aux religions traditionnelles africaines en essayant de determiner s'il reste un mouvement chretien.
