Quasar Q0059–2735, one of the first known iron low-ionization broad-absorption-line quasars (FeLoBAL), has a plethora of outflow absorption features at different velocities. Given multiple outflow systems, their troughs from high-ionization transitions form very wide BAL features, e.g. C iv troughs extend from ∼−1000 to −25 000 km s−1. The troughs from low-ionization transitions show more than 1000 narrow absorption lines (NALs) with velocities from −1000 to −3000 km s−1. These include troughs from iron-peak elements, e.g. Fe ii, Fe iii, Cr ii, Mn ii, Ni ii, and Co ii, which are rarely detected in quasar outflows. Most of these troughs are non-black saturated. We constrain the physical conditions of the NALs by fitting the observed Fe ii and Fe iii absorption troughs. We find that the Fe ii absorption arises from a region with an electron temperature (Te) of ∼8000 K and an electron number density (ne) of ∼108 cm−3. The same model also fits well the troughs from other iron-peak elements. In contrast to the Fe ii lines, Fe iii lines are formed in a hotter region, i.e. Te ∼20 000 K. To fit the Fe ii and Fe iii lines simultaneously in a single photoionized cloud, they require a supersolar iron abundance and/or other heating mechanisms for the Fe iii region. The distance (R) of the outflows to the central quasar is determined to be ∼40 pc. The high-resolution data afforded by the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/UVES observations from 2006 and 2018, along with the narrow lines, allow us to constrain the smallest outflow deceleration in any known quasars.

High resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the strongly magnetic, super-slowly rotating rapidly oscillating Ap star HD166473 are used to investigate the implications of the presence of a variable strong magnetic field on the vertical and surface horizontal distribution of various chemical elements. The analysis of the calculated LSD Stokes $I$ and $V$ profiles confirms the previously reported detection of non-uniform horizontal surface distribution of several chemical elements. To test the vertical abundance stratification of iron peak and rare earth elements, magnetic field measurements were carried out using spectral lines of these elements belonging to neutral and ionised stages. We find clear indication of the existence of a relation between the magnetic field strength and its orientation and vertical element stratification: magnetic field values obtained for elements in different stages close to the magnetic equator are rather similar whereas the dispersion in field strengths is remarkably large in the regions close to magnetic field poles. At the phases of negative and positive extrema the mean longitudinal field strength determined from the analysis of the REE lines is usually stronger than when using Fe and Cr. The strongest mean longitudinal magnetic field, up to $-$4160$\pm$226 G, is detected using the La II line list at the negative extremum, followed by the measurements using the Pr III lines with $\langle B_z \rangle$=$-$3740$\pm$343 G and the Ce II lines with $\langle B_z \rangle$=$-$3372$\pm$247 G. The strongest mean longitudinal magnetic field of positive polarity, up to 3584$\pm$354 G is detected using the Pr III lines, followed by the measurement $\langle B_z \rangle$=2517$\pm$249 G using the Ce II lines., Accepted to be published in MNRAS

Aims. The aim of this work is to determine fundamental parameters of three Ap stars, GO And (HD 4778), κ Psc (HD 220825), and 84 UMa (HD 120198), using spectroscopic techniques. By analysing these stars, we complete the sample of Ap stars for which fundamental parameters have additionally been derived by means of interferometry. This enables a cross-comparison of results derived by direct and indirect methods. Methods. Our study is based on the analysis of high-resolution spectra with a high signal-to-noise ratio that were obtained with ESPaDOnS spectrograph. We used an iterative method of fundamental parameter determinations that includes self-consistent modelling of the stellar atmosphere, taking individual abundances of chemical elements into account and subsequently fitting a theoretical spectral energy distribution to the observed distribution. The quality of the spectroscopic determinations was evaluated through a comparison with the interferometric results. Results. For all investigated stars, we determined fundamental parameters and derived chemical abundances that are typical for Ap stars. The abundances are mainly characterised by a gradual increase of heavy element atmospheric abundances from an order of magnitude for iron peak elements up to very significant excesses of 3-4 dex of the rare-earth elements relative to the solar values. The only exception is Ba, whose abundance is close to the solar abundance. There is also a significant He deficiency in the atmospheres of HD 120198 and HD 220825, whereas the He abundance in HD 4778 is close to the solar abundance. We do not find significant Fe and Cr stratification. Using these abundances, we constructed self-consistent atmospheric models for each star. The effect of the surface chemical inhomogeneity on the derived fundamental parameters did not exceed ±100 K in effective temperature, which lies within the range of errors in similar self-consistent analyses of Ap stars. Finally, we compared spectroscopically derived effective temperatures, radii, and luminosity for 13 out of 14 Ap stars in a benchmark sample with the interferometric results. While radii and luminosity agree within the quoted errors of both determinations, the spectroscopic effective temperatures are higher than the interferometric temperatures for stars with Teff > 9000 K. Context. Open clusters are recognised as excellent tracers of Galactic thin-disc properties. At variance with intermediate-age and old open clusters, for which a significant number of studies is now available, clusters younger than ≲ 150 Myr have been mostly overlooked in terms of their chemical composition until recently (with few exceptions). On the other hand, previous investigations seem to indicate an anomalous behaviour of young clusters, which includes (but is not limited to) slightly sub-solar iron (Fe) abundances and extreme, unexpectedly high barium (Ba) enhancements. Aims. In a series of papers, we plan to expand our understanding of this topic and investigate whether these chemical peculiarities are instead related to abundance analysis techniques. Methods. We present a new determination of the atmospheric parameters for 23 dwarf stars observed by the Gaia-ESO survey in five young open clusters (τ < 150 Myr) and one star-forming region (NGC 2264). We exploit a new method based on titanium (Ti) lines to derive the spectroscopic surface gravity, and most importantly, the microturbulence parameter. A combination of Ti and Fe lines is used to obtain effective temperatures. We also infer the abundances of Fe » I, Fe » II, Ti » I, Ti » II, Na » I, Mg » I, Al » I, Si » I, Ca » I, Cr » I, and Ni » I. Results. Our findings are in fair agreement with Gaia-ESO iDR5 results for effective temperatures and surface gravities, but suggest that for very young stars, the microturbulence parameter is over-estimated when Fe lines are employed. This affects the derived chemical composition and causes the metal content of very young clusters to be under-estimated. Conclusions. Our clusters display a metallicity [Fe/H] between +0.04 ± 0.01 and +0.12 ± 0.02; they are not more metal poor than the Sun. We analyze the nucleosynthesis yields of various Type Ia supernova explosion simulations including pure detonations in sub- Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs, double detonations and pure helium detonations of sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs with an accreted helium envelope, a violent merger model of two white dwarfs and deflagrations as well as delayed detonations in Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs. We focus on the iron peak elements Mn, Zn and Cu. To this end, we also briefly review the different burning regimes and production sites of these elements as well as the results of abundance measurements and several galactic chemical evolution studies. We find that super-solar values of [Mn/Fe] are not restricted to Chandrasekhar mass explosion models. Scenarios including a helium detonation can significantly contribute to the production of Mn, in particular the models proposed for calcium-rich transients. Although Type Ia supernovae are often not accounted for as production sites of Zn and Cu, our models involving helium shell detonations can produce these elements in super-solar ratios relative to Fe. Our results suggest a re-consideration of Type Ia supernova yields in galactic chemical evolution models. We study the chemical evolution of galaxy clusters by measuring the iron mass in the ICM after dissecting the abundance profiles into different components. We use Chandra archival observations of 186 morphologically regular clusters in the redshift range [0.04, 1.07]. For each cluster we compute the iron abundance and gas density profiles. We aim at identifying in the iron distribution a central peak associated with the BCG, and an approximately constant plateau associated with early enrichment. We are able to firmly identify the two components in a significant fraction of the sample, simply relying on the fit of the abundance profile. We compute the iron mass included in the iron peak and plateau, and the gas mass-weighted iron abundance out to $r_{500}$. While the iron plateau shows no evolution, we find marginal decrease with redshift in the iron peak. We measure that the fraction of iron peak mass is typically a few percent (~1%) of the total iron mass within $r_{500}$. Therefore, since the total iron mass budget is dominated by the plateau, we find consistently that the global gas mass-weighted iron abundance does not evolve significantly. We are also able to reproduce past claims of evolution in the global iron abundance, which turn out to be due to the use of cluster samples with different selection methods combined to the use of emission-weighted instead of gas mass-weighted abundance values. Finally, while the intrinsic scatter in the iron plateau mass is consistent with zero, the iron peak mass exhibits a large scatter, in line with the fact that the peak is produced after the virialization of the halo and depends on the formation of the hosting cool core and the associated feedback processes. We conclude that only a spatially-resolved approach can resolve the issue of the ICM iron evolution, reconciling the contradictory results obtained in the last ten years., Accepted for publication in A&A

We have obtained new detailed abundances of the Fe-group elements Sc through Zn (Z=21-30) in three very metal-poor ([Fe/H] $\approx -3$) stars: BD 03 740, BD -13 3442 and CD -33 1173. High-resolution ultraviolet HST/STIS spectra in the wavelength range 2300-3050\AA\ were gathered, and complemented by an assortment of optical echelle spectra. The analysis featured recent laboratory atomic data for number of neutral and ionized species for all Fe-group elements except Cu and Zn. A detailed examination of scandium, titanium, and vanadium abundances in large-sample spectroscopic surveys indicates that they are positively correlated in stars with [Fe/H], Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures. Neutron induced reactions are fundamental for the nucleosynthesis of elements in the universe. Indeed, to correctly study the reactions involved in the well-known s-process in stars, which produce about half of the elements beyond the iron peak, it is mandatory to know the neutron abundance available in those stars. The 17O(n, a)14C reaction is one of the so-called “neutron poisons” for the pro- cess and it could play an important role in the balance of the neutron abundance. The reaction is therefore investigated in the energy range of astrophysical inter- est between 0 and 350 keV in the center of mass by applying the Trojan Horse Method to the three body reaction 2H(17O, a14C)H.

We calculate the mean evolution of the iron-peak abundance ratios [(Cr,Mn,Co,Zn)/Fe] in the Galaxy, using modern supernova and hypernova chemical yields and a Galactic Chemical Evolution code that assumes homogeneous chemical evolution. We investigate a range of hypernova occurrence rates and are able to produce a chemical composition that is a reasonable fit to the observed values in metal-poor stars. This requires a hypernova occurence rate that is large (50%) in the early Universe, decreasing throughout evolution to a value that is within present day observational constraints (>~ 1%). A large hypernova occurence rate is beneficial to matching the high [Zn/Fe] observed in the most metal-poor stars, although including hypernovae with progenitor mass >= 60 solar masses is detrimental to matching the observed [(Mn,Co)/Fe] evolution at low [Fe/H]. A significant contribution from HNe seems to be critical for producing supersolar [(Co,Zn)/Fe] at low metallicity, though more work will need to be done in order to match the most extreme values. We also emphasise the need to update models for the enrichment sources at higher metallicity, as the satisfactory recovery of the solar values of [(Cr,Mn,Co,Zn)/Fe] still presents a challenge., 17 pages, 14 figures

The alpha element to iron peak element ratio, for example [Mg/Fe], is a commonly applied indicator of the galaxy star formation timescale (SFT) since the two groups of elements are mainly produced by different types of supernovae that explode over different timescales. However, it is insufficient to consider only [Mg/Fe] when estimating the SFT. The [Mg/Fe] yield of a stellar population depends on its metallicity. Therefore, it is possible for galaxies with different SFTs and at the same time different total metallicity to have the same [Mg/Fe]. This effect has not been properly taken into consideration in previous studies. In this study, we assume the galaxy-wide stellar initial mass function (gwIMF) to be canonical and invariant. We demonstrate that our computation code reproduces the SFT estimations of previous studies where only the [Mg/Fe] observational constraint is applied. We then demonstrate that once both metallicity and [Mg/Fe] observations are considered, a more severe "downsizing relation" is required. This means that either low-mass ellipticals have longer SFTs (> 4 Gyr for galaxies with mass below $10^{10}$ M$_\odot$) or massive ellipticals have shorter SFTs ($\approx 200$ Myr for galaxies more massive than $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$) than previously thought. This modification increases the difficulty in reconciling such SFTs with other observational constraints. We show that applying different stellar yield modifications does not relieve this formation timescale problem. The quite unrealistically short SFT required by [Mg/Fe] and total metallicity would be prolonged if a variable stellar gwIMF were assumed. The study of open-cluster chemical abundances provides insights on stellar nucleosynthesis processes and on Galactic chemo-dynamical evolution. In this paper we present an extended abundance analysis of 10 species (Fe, Ni, Cr, V, Sc, Si, Ca, Ti, Mg, O) for red giant stars in 18 OCCASO clusters. This represents a homogeneous sample regarding the instrument features, method, line list and solar abundances from confirmed member stars. We perform an extensive comparison with previous results in the literature, and in particular with the Gaia FGK Benchmark stars Arcturus and $\mu$Leo. Symbiotic stars (SySt) are binaries composed of a star in the later stages of evolution and a stellar remnant. The enhanced mass-loss from the giant drives interacting mass exchange and makes these systems laboratories for understanding binary evolution. Studies of the chemical compositions are particularly useful since this parameter has strong impact on the evolutionary path. The previous paper in this series presented photospheric abundances for 24 giants in S-type SySt enabling a first statistical analysis. Here we present results for an additional sample of 13 giants. The aims are to improve statistics of chemical composition involved in the evolution of SySt, to study evolutionary status, mass transfer and to interpret this in terms of Galactic populations. High-resolution, near-IR spectra are used, employing the spectrum synthesis method in a classical approach, to obtain abundances of CNO and elements around the iron peak (Fe, Ti, Ni). Low-resolution spectra in the region around the Ca II triplet were used for spectral classification. The metallicities obtained cover a wide range with a maximum around ~-0.2 dex. The enrichment in the 14N isotope indicates that these giants have experienced the first dredge-up. Relative O and Fe abundances indicate that most SySt belong to the Galactic disc; however, in a few cases, the extended thick-disc/halo is suggested. Difficult to explain, relatively high Ti abundances can indicate that adopted microturbulent velocities were too small by ~0.2-0.3 km/s. We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of horizontal branch stars in the globular cluster NGC 3201. We collected optical (4580-5330 Å), high-resolution (∼34,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (∼200) spectra for 11 RR Lyrae stars and one red horizontal branch star with the multifiber spectrograph M2FS with the 6.5 m Magellan telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory. From measured equivalent widths, we derived atmospheric parameters and abundance ratios for α (Mg, Ca, and Ti), iron-peak (Sc, Cr, Ni, and Zn), and s-process (Y) elements. We found that NGC 3201 is a homogeneous, monometallic ([Fe/H] = -1.47 ± 0.04), α-enhanced ([α/Fe] = 0.37 ± 0.04) cluster. The relative abundances of the iron-peak and s-process elements were found to be consistent with solar values. In comparison with other large stellar samples, NGC 3201 RR Lyraes have similar chemical enrichment histories as do those of other old (t ≥ 10 Gyr) Halo components (globular clusters; red giants; blue and red horizontal branch stars; and RR Lyraes). We also provided a new average radial velocity estimate for NGC 3201 by using a template velocity curve to overcome the limit of single-epoch measurements of variable stars: Vrad = 494 ± 2 km s-1 (σ = 8 km s-1). We investigate the spatial distribution of iron in the intra-cluster medium in a selected sample of 41 relaxed clusters in the redshift range $0.05 < z < 1.03$ using {\sl Chandra} archival data. We compute the azimuthally-averaged, deprojected $Z_{\rm Fe}$ profile of each cluster out to $\sim 0.4r_{500}$, and identify a peak in the distribution of iron followed by a flatter distribution at larger radii. Due to the steep gradient both in gas density and abundance, we find that the emission-weighted iron abundance within $0.2r_{500}$, which entirely includes the iron peak in most of the cases, is on average $\sim$25\% higher than the mass-weighted value, showing that spatially resolved analysis and accurate deprojection are key to study the evolution of iron enrichment in the very central regions of cool core clusters. We quantify the extent of the iron distribution in each cluster with a normalized scale parameter $r_{\rm Fe}$, defined as the radius where the iron abundance excess is half of its peak value. We find that $r_{\rm Fe}$ increases by a factor of $\sim 3$ from $z\sim 1$ to $z\sim 0.1$, suggesting that the spatial distribution of iron in the ICM extends with time, possibly due to the mixing with the mechanical-mode feedback from the central galaxy. We also find that the iron mass excess within $0.3r_{500}$, when normalized to the total baryonic mass within the same region, does not evolve significantly, showing that this iron mass component is already established at $z\sim 1$.

The study of symbiotic systems is of considerable importance in our understanding of binary system stellar evolution in systems where mass loss or transfer takes place. Elemental abundances are of special significance since they can be used to track mass exchange. However, there are few symbiotic giants for which the abundances are fairly well determined. Here we present for the first time a detailed analysis of the chemical composition for the giants in the RW Hya and SY Mus systems. The analysis is based on high resolution (R 50000), high S/N, near-IR spectra. Spectrum synthesis employing standard LTE analysis and atmosphere models was used to obtain photospheric abundances of CNO and elements around the iron peak (Sc, Ti, Fe, and Ni). Our analysis reveals a significantly sub-solar metallicity, [Fe/H]-0.75}, for the RW Hya giant confirming its membership in the Galactic halo population and a near-solar metallicity for the SY Mus giant. The very low 12C/13C isotopic ratios, 6-10, derived for both objects indicate that the giants have experienced the first dredge-up, MNRAS in press

Modelling the magnetic field structure in HD49976, we obtained a map of its magnetic field distribution on the surface and its main parameters. Simulating the distribution of Ca and Sr by the phase dependences of the Ca II 3934 A and Sr II 4215 A equivalent line widths revealed that their abundances are most likely increased between the magnetic poles. An insufficiently clear result is due to the structure of the magnetic field of HD49976, which proved to be complex, not corresponding to the central dipole. It is modelled by two dipoles, the stronger of them is in the center of the star, and the other, weaker, is at distance of 0.3R* from the center. The synthetic spectrum method yielded abundances of 28 elements in the moments of magnetic field extrema. The carbon and sulfur abundances proved to be close to the solar values, silicon showed a deficit of 1.0 dex, lithium, calcium, iron and the iron peak elements, strontium, rare earths are in excess, especially significant in the case of rare earths. High-resolution spectropolarimetric observations closely covering the entire rotation period are required to investigate the distribution of chemical elements in complex multi-dipole magnetic configurations, applying the Magnetic Doppler Imaging method.

Observations indicate that a circumstellar disk is formed around a Be star while the stellar rotation is below the break-up velocity. I propose a working hypothesis to explain this mystery by taking account of the effect of leaky waves upon angular momentum transfer.In B-type stars near the main sequence, low-frequency nonradial oscillations are excited by the κ-mechanism in the iron bump. They transport angular momentum from the driving zone to the surface. As a consequence, the angular momentum is gradually deposited near the stellar surface. This results in a gradual increase in the “critical frequency for g-modes”, and g-modes eventually start to leak outward, long before the surface rotation reaches the break-up velocity. This leads to a substantial amount of angular momentum loss from the star, and a circumstellar disk is formed. The oscillations themselves will be soon damped owing to kinetic energy loss. Then the envelope of the star spins down and angular momentum loss stops soon. The star returns to being quiet and remains calm until nonradial oscillations are newly built up by the κ-mechanism to sufficient amplitude and a new episode begins.According to this view, the interval of episodic Be-star activity corresponds to the growth time of the oscillation, and it seems in good agreement with observations.

β Cephei and SPB stars are pulsating stars for which the excitation of modes by the κ mechanism, due to the iron-group opacity peak, seems puzzling. We have first investigated the origins of the differences noticed between OP and OPAL iron and nickel opacity calculations (up to a factor 2), a fact which complicates the interpretation. To accomplish this task, new well-qualified calculations (SCO-RCG, HULLAC and ATOMIC) have been performed and compared to values of these tables, and most of the differences are now well understood. Next, we have exploited a dedicated experiment on chromium, iron and nickel, conducted at the LULI 2000 facilities. We found that, in the case of iron, detailed calculations (OP, ATOMIC and HULLAC) show good agreement, contrary to all of the non-detailed calculations. However, in the case of nickel, OP calculations show large discrepancies with the experiments but also with other codes. Thus, the opacity tables need to be revised in the thermodynamical conditions corresponding to the peak of the iron group. Consequently we study the evolution of this iron peak with changes in stellar mass, age, and metallicity to determine the relevant region where these tables should be revised.

We present time-dependent, self-consistent diffusion calcu- lations for Cr, Mn and Fe in a Teff = 12000K and log g = 4.0 stellar atmosphere. The temporal evolution of the chemical stratifications is followed for the zero field case and for magnetic fields of varying strength and direction relative to the stellar surface. Preliminary con- clusions are preceded by a comparison of the present results to equilib- rium solutions.

The aim of this paper is to characterise the abundance patterns of five iron-peak elements (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn) for which the stellar origin and chemical evolution are still debated. We automatically derived iron peak (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and alpha element (Mg) chemical abundances for 4666 stars. We used the bimodal distribution of [Mg/Fe] to chemically classify sample stars into different Galactic substructures: thin disc, metal-poor and high-alpha metal rich, high-alpha and low-alpha metal-poor populations. High-alpha and low-alpha metal-poor populations are fully distinct in Mg, Cu, and Zn. Thin disc trends of [Ni/Fe] and [Cu/Fe] are very similar and show a small increase at supersolar metallicities. Thin and thick disc trends of Ni and Cu are very similar and indistinguishable. Mn looks different from Ni and Cu. [Mn/Fe] trends of thin and thick discs actually have noticeable differences: the thin disc is slightly Mn richer than the thick disc. [Zn/Fe] trends look very similar to those of [alpha/Fe] trends. The dispersion of results in both discs is low (approx 0.05 dex for [Mg, Mn, and Cu/Fe]) and is even much lower for [Ni/Fe] (approx 0.035 dex). Zn is an alpha-like element and could be used to separate thin and thick disc stars. [Mn/Mg] ratio could also be a very good tool for tagging Galactic substructures. Some models can partially reproduce the observed Mg, Zn, and, Cu behaviours. Models mostly fail to reproduce Mn and Ni in all metallicity domains, however, models adopting yields normalised from solar chemical properties reproduce Mn and Ni better, suggesting that there is still a lack of realistic theoretical yields of some iron-peak elements. Very low scatter (approx 0.05 dex) in thin and thick disc sequences could provide an observational constrain for Galactic evolutionary models that study the efficiency of stellar radial migration., 21 pages, 20 figures

In this paper we present an homogeneous analysis of photospheric abundances based on high-resolution spectroscopy of a sample of 182 barium stars and candidates. We determined atmospheric parameters, spectroscopic distances, stellar masses, ages, luminosities and scale height, radial velocities, abundances of the Na, Al, $alpha$-elements, iron-peak elements, and s-process elements Y, Zr, La, Ce, and Nd. We employed the local-thermodynamic-equilibrium model atmospheres of Kurucz and the spectral analysis code {\sc moog}. We found that the metallicities, the temperatures and the surface gravities for barium stars can not be represented by a single gaussian distribution. The abundances of $alpha$-elements and iron peak elements are similar to those of field giants with the same metallicity. Sodium presents some degree of enrichment in more evolved stars that could be attributed to the NeNa cycle. As expected, the barium stars show overabundance of the elements created by the s-process. By measuring the mean heavy-element abundance pattern as given by the ratio [s/Fe], we found that the barium stars present several degrees of enrichment. We also obtained the [hs/ls] ratio by measuring the photospheric abundances of the Ba-peak and the Zr-peak elements. Our results indicated that the [s/Fe] and the [hs/ls] ratios are strongly anti-correlated with the metallicity. Our kinematical analysis showed that 90% of the barium stars belong to the thin disk population. Based on their luminosities, none of the barium stars are luminous enough to be an AGB star, nor to become self-enriched in the s-process elements. The drive of low-energy nuclear astrophysics laboratories is to study the reactions of importance to stellar burning processes and elemental production through stellar nucleosynthesis, over the energy range of astrophysical interest. As laboratory measurements approach the stellar burning window, the rapid drop off of cross-sections is a significant barrier and drives the need to lower background interference. The natural background suppression of underground accelerator facilities enables the extension of current experimental data to lower energies. An example of such reactions of interest are those thought to be sources of neutrons for the s-process, the major production mechanism for elements above the iron peak. The reactions 13 C(α,n)16 O and 22 Ne(α,n)25 Mg are the proposed initial focus of the new nuclear astrophysics accelerator laboratory (CASPAR) currently under construction at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, Lead, South Dakota

An update of the fine structure in the cosmic ray (CR) energy spectrum at PeV and tens of PeV energies is presented. The existence of the bump at 50-80 PeV found in the GAMMA experiment is supported by 9 other experi- ments. If it is a real feature it might indicate the existence of the so called 'Iron Peak', i.e. the end of the contribution of a 'Single Source' to the background of CR from other sources. We argue that the new feature in the fine structure of the CR energy spectrum makes the evidence in favour of the pres- ence of a 'Single Source' stronger than before.

A method was developed for rapid separation and determination of iron by employing capillary zone elec-trophoresis (CZE) technique with direct UV detection. Iron could be separated from matrix uranium by di-rect injection of dissolved sample solution into capillary using a mixture of 10 mM HCl and 65 mM KCl (pH = 2) as background electrolyte (BGE) at an applied voltage of 15 kV. The developed method has a very high tolerance for the matrix element U (100 mg/mL) and as such may not need prior separation of iron from the matrix. Iron could be separated with better than 95% recovery. The method showed a linear calibration over a concentration range 1-50 ppm of Fe. The migration times for the iron peak were reproducible within 1% for both pure Fe(III) and in presence of matrix uranium (80 mg/mL). The precision (RSD, n = 22) of peak area obtained for 1ppm of iron was 3.5%. The limit of detection (LOD) (3 ) was 0.1 ppm and the ab-solute LOD was 9 × 10-14 g considering the sample injection volume of 1.5 nL. The developed method has been validated by separating and determining iron in two certified reference materials of U3O8. The method was applied for the determination of iron in different uranium based nuclear materials. The CZE method is versatile for routine analysis as it is simple, rapid and has simple sample preparation procedure.

The spectrum from the black hole X-ray transient GRO J1655-40. obtained using the $Chandra$ High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) in 2005 is notable as a laboratory for the study of warm absorbers, and for the presence of many lines from odd-$Z$ elements between Na and Co (and Ti and Cr) not previously observed in X-rays. We present synthetic spectral models which can be used to constrain these element abundances and other parameters describing the outflow from the warm absorber in this object. We present results of fitting to the spectrum using various tools and techniques, including automated line fitting, phenomenological models, and photoionization modeling. We show that the behavior of the curves of growth of lines from H-like and Li-like ions indicate that the lines are either saturated or affected by filling-in from scattered or a partially covered continuum source. We confirm the conclusion of previous work by \cite{Mill06} and \cite{Mill08} which shows that the ionization conditions are not consistent with wind driving due to thermal expansion. The spectrum provides the opportunity to measure abundances for several elements not typically observable in the X-ray band. These show a pattern of enhancement for iron peak elements, and solar or sub-solar values for elements lighter than calcium. Models show that this is consistent with enrichment by a core-collapse supernova. We discuss the implications these values for the evolutionary history of this system., Comment: Ap. J. submitted

We present elemental abundances of 118 stars (28 of which are known extrasolar planetary host stars) observed as part of the Anglo-Australian Planet Search. Abundances of O, Mg, Cr, Y, Zr, Ba, Nd and Eu (along with previously published abundances for C and Si) are presented. This study is one of the first to specifically examine planetary host stars for the heavy elements produced by neutron capture reactions. We find that the host stars are chemically different to both the standard solar abundance and non-host stars in all elements studied, with enrichments over non-host stars ranging from 0.06 dex (for O) to 0.11 dex (for Cr and Y). Such abundance trends are in agreement with other previous studies of field stars and lead us to conclude that the chemical anomalies observed in planetary host stars are the result of normal galactic chemical evolution processes. Based on this observation, we conclude that the observed chemical traits of planetary host stars are primordial in origin, coming from the original nebula and not from a ``pollution'' process occurring during or after formation and that planet formation occurs naturally with the evolution of stellar material., 34 pages, 4 figures, uses aastex.cls. We present an analysis of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) spectra of five V1093 Her (PG 1716+426) stars, the subgroup of hydrogen-rich subdwarf B stars that exhibit very low amplitude, long-period luminosity variations. Our primary aim is to investigate whether these stars display abundances which differ from those observed in the nonvariable sdB stars and also in the shorter period V361 Hya variables. For the light elements and for those beyond the iron peak, our abundances are consistent with the trends observed in earlier studies. For the important iron peak elements Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni, which are thought to be directly linked to the driving mechanism in both long-period and short-period variables, the abundances determined in the V1093 Her stars appear very homogeneous and exhibit mild enrichments (by factors of 2-5 for Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) over the solar value. However, these abundances do not differ appreciably from those measured in a sample consisting of constant stars and one short-period pulsator. The implications of these findings for current models which involve both diffusion processes and stellar winds to account for the driving of nonradial pulsations in sdB stars are discussed.

We discuss the influence of nuclear masses and mass distributions of fission products on the formation of heavy elements at the final stages of the r-process recycled through fission on long duration timescales. The fission recycling is of great importance in an environment with a high density of free neutrons (e.g., in neutron star merger scenarios), when the r-process duration is long enough for most of the seed nuclei to be transformed into actinoids. The fission products of transuranium elements are again drawn into the r-process to produce the abundance curve beyond the iron peak. In this case, to explain the abundances of the A ∼ 130 peak elements, not only the nuclear masses, fission barriers, and reaction rates, but also the fission product mass distribution must be predicted. Our r-process calculations using new nuclear masses and fission barriers and reaction rates based on them have shown that the simple two-fission-fragment model used previously in r-process calculations cannot describe adequately the position of the second peak in the observed abundance curve. We show that agreement between calculations and observations can be achieved only when we properly consider the mass distribution of fission products by taking into account the emission of instantaneous fission neutrons.

Based on the analysis of high-resolution spectra with a high signal-to-noise ratio, we have determined the abundances of the α-elements O, Si, Ca and Ti, the iron peak elements V, Fe and Ni, and the heavy element Ba without the consideration of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effect and the light neutron-rich elements Na, Mg and Al with an NLTE analysis for 63 nearby red clump giants. Fe abundances cover a logarithmic range between −0.60 and +0.35 relative to solar. All abundance ratios with respect to Fe are similar to those found in the Sun. Hyperfine structure (HFS) was taken into account when calculating V lines. The difference in abundances obtained with and without HFS can be as large as 0.5 dex.

HD 140283 is a reference subgiant that is metal poor and confirmed to be a very old star. The abundances of this type of old star can constrain the nature and nucleosynthesis processes that occurred in its (even older) progenitors. The present study may shed light on nucleosynthesis processes yielding heavy elements early in the Galaxy. A detailed abundance analysis of a high-quality spectrum is carried out, with the intent of providing a reference on stellar lines and abundances of a very old, metal-poor subgiant. We aim to derive abundances from most available and measurable spectral lines. The analysis is carried out using high-resolution (R = 81 000) and high signal-to-noise ratio (800 < S/N/pixel < 3400) spectrum, in the wavelength range 3700 - 10475, obtained with a seven-hour exposure time, using the ESPaDOnS at the CFHT. The calculations in LTE were performed with the OSMARCS 1D atmospheric model and the spectrum synthesis code Turbospectrum, while the analysis in NLTE is based on the MULTI code. We present LTE abundances for 26 elements, and NLTE calculations for the species C I, O I, Na I, Mg I, Al I, K I, Ca I, Sr II, and Ba II lines. The abundance analysis provided an extensive line list suitable for metal-poor subgiant stars. The results for Li, CNO, alpha-, and iron peak elements are in good agreement with literature. The newly NLTE Ba abundance, along with a NLTE Eu correction and a 3D Ba correction from literature, leads to [Eu/Ba] = +0.59 +/- 0.18. This result confirms a dominant r-process contribution, possibly together with a very small contribution from the main s-process, to the neutron-capture elements in HD 140283. Overabundances of the lighter heavy elements and the high abundances derived for Ba, La, and Ce favour the operation of the weak r-process in HD 140283., 34 pages, 27 figures

We carried out a systematic study of the electronic structure of doubly-ionized Fe-peak species, from Sc III to Ni III. The magnetic dipole (M1) and electric quadrupole (E2) transition probabilities were computed using the pseudo-relativistic Hartree-Fock (HFR) method and the central Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-Amaldi potential approximation implemented in the AUTOSTRUCTURE code. This multi-platform approach allowed for consistency checks and intercomparison and has proven very useful in many previous works for estimating the uncertainties affecting the radiative data.

Heavy-elements, i.e. those beyond the iron peak, mostly form via two neutron capture processes: the s- and r-process. Metal-poor stars should contain fewer isotopes that form via the s-process, according to currently accepted theory. It has been shown in several investigations that theory and observation do not agree well, raising questions on the validity of either the methodology or the theory. We analyse the metal-poor star HD140283, for which we have a high quality spectrum. We test whether a 3D LTE stellar atmosphere and spectrum synthesis code permits a more reliable analysis of the iron abundance and barium isotope ratio than a 1D LTE analysis. Using 3D model atmospheres, we examine 91 iron lines of varying strength and formation depth. This provides us with the star's rotational speed. With this, we model the barium isotope ratio by exploiting the hyperfine structure of the singly ionised 4554 resonance line, and study the impact of the uncertainties in the stellar parameters. HD140283's vsini = 1.65 +/- 0.05 km/s. Barium isotopes under the 3D paradigm show a dominant r-process signature as 77 +/- 6 +/- 17% of barium isotopes form via the r-process, where errors represent the assigned random and systematic errors, respectively. We find that 3D LTE fits reproduce iron line profiles better than those in 1D, but do not provide a unique abundance (within the uncertainties). However, we demonstrate that the isotopic ratio is robust against this shortcoming. Our barium isotope result agrees well with currently accepted theory regarding the formation of the heavy-elements during the early Galaxy. The improved fit to the asymmetric iron line profiles suggests that the current state of 3D LTE modelling provides excellent simulations of fluid flows. However, the abundances they provide are not yet self-consistent. This may improve with NLTE considerations and higher resolution models., 16 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. We present a spectral analysis of the UV-bright star vZ 1128 in M3 based on observations with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), and the Keck HIRES echelle spectrograph. By fitting the H I, He I, and He II lines in the Keck spectrum with non-LTE H-He models, we obtain Teff = 36,600 K, log g = 3.95, and log N(He)/N(H) = -0.84. The star's FUSE and STIS spectra show photospheric absorption from C, N, O, Al, Si, P, S, Fe, and Ni. No stellar features from elements beyond the iron peak are observed. Both components of the N V 1240 doublet exhibit P~Cygni profiles, indicating a weak stellar wind, but no other wind features are seen. The star's photospheric abundances appear to have changed little since it left the red giant branch (RGB). Its C, N, O, Al, Si, Fe, and Ni abundances are consistent with published values for the red-giant stars in M3, and the relative abundances of C, N, and O follow the trends seen on the cluster RGB. In particular, its low C abundance suggests that the star left the asymptotic giant branch before the onset of third dredge-up., 15 pages, 10 figures, to be published in MNRAS

We present a spectral analysis of the binary G 224-58 AB that consists of the coolest M extreme subdwarf (esdM5.5) and a brighter primary (esdK5). This binary may serve as a benchmark for metallicity measurement calibrations and as a test-bed for atmospheric and evolutionary models for esdM objects. We determine abundances primarily using high resolution optical spectra of the primary. Other parameters were determined from the fits of synthetic spectra computed with these abundances to the observed spectra from 0.4 to 2.5 microns for both components. We determine \Tef =4625 $\pm$ 100 K, \logg = 4.5 $\pm$ 0.5 for the A component and \Tef = 3200 $\pm$ 100 K, \logg = 5.0 $\pm$ 0.5, for the B component. We obtained abundances of [Mg/H]=$-$1.51$\pm$0.08, [Ca/H]=$-$1.39$\pm$0.03, [Ti/H]=$-$1.37$\pm$0.03 for alpha group elements and [CrH]=$-$1.88$\pm$0.07, [Mn/H]=$-$1.96$\pm$0.06, [Fe/H]=$-$1.92$\pm$0.02, [Ni/H]=$-$1.81$\pm$0.05 and [Ba/H]W=$-$1.87$\pm$0.11 for iron group elements from fits to the spectral lines observed in the optical and infrared spectral regions of the primary. We find consistent abundances with fits to the secondary albeit at lower signal-to-noise. Abundances of elements in \ga and \gb atmospheres cannot be described by one metallicity parameter. The offset of $\sim$ 0.4 dex between the abundances derived from alpha element and iron group elements corresponds with our expectation for metal-deficient stars. We thus clarify that some indices used to date to measure metallicities for establishing esdM stars based on CaH, MgH and TiO band system strength ratios in the optical and H$_2$O in the infrared relate to abundances of alpha-element group rather than to iron peak elements. For metal deficient M dwarfs with [Fe/H] < -1.0, this provides a ready explanation for apparently inconsistent "metallicities" derived using different methods., Accepted by AA, 11 pages, 9 figs

In the current era of large spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way, reference stars for calibrating astrophysical parameters and chemical abundances are of paramount importance. We determine elemental abundances of Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co and Ni for our predefined set of Gaia FGK benchmark stars. By analysing high-resolution and high-signal to noise spectra taken from several archive datasets, we combined results of eight different methods to determine abundances on a line-by-line basis. We perform a detailed homogeneous analysis of the systematic uncertainties, such as differential versus absolute abundance analysis, as well as we assess errors due to NLTE and the stellar parameters in our final abundances. Our results are provided by listing final abundances and the different sources of uncertainties, as well as line-by-line and method-by-method abundances. The Gaia FGK benchmark stars atmospheric parameters are already being widely used for calibration of several pipelines applied to different surveys. AIMS: The aim of this study is to investigate the origin and evolution of Sc, V, Mn, and Co for a homogeneous and statistically significant sample of stars probing the different populations of the Milky Way, in particular the thin and thick disks. METHODS: Using high-resolution spectra obtained with MIKE, FEROS, SOFIN, FIES, UVES and HARPS spectrographs, we determine Sc, V, Mn, and Co abundances for a large sample of F and G dwarfs in Solar neighbourhood. The method is based on spectral synthesis and using one-dimensional (1-D), plane-parallel, LTE model stellar atmospheres calculated with the MARCS 2012 code. NLTE corrections from literature were applied to Mn and Co. RESULTS: We find that the abundance trends derived for Sc (594 stars), V (466 stars), and Co (567 stars) are very similar to what has been observed for the alpha-elements in the thin and thick disks. On the contrary Mn (569 stars) is generally underabundant relative to the Sun (i.e. [Mn/Fe], Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 19 pages

On 21 January 2014, SN2014J was discovered in M82 and found to be the closest type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in the last four decades. INTEGRAL observed SN2014J from the end of January until late June for a total exposure time of about 7 Ms. SNe Ia light curves are understood to be powered by the radioactive decay of iron peak elements of which $^{56}$Ni is dominantly synthesized during the thermonuclear disruption of a CO white dwarf (WD). The measurement of $\gamma$-ray lines from the decay chain $^{56}$Ni$\rightarrow$$^{56}$Co$\rightarrow$$^{56}$Fe provides unique information about the explosion in supernovae. Canonical models assume $^{56}$Ni buried deeply in the supernova cloud, absorbing most of the early $\gamma$-rays, and only the consecutive decay of $^{56}$Co should become directly observable through the overlaying material several weeks after the explosion when the supernova envelope dilutes as it expands. Surprisingly, with the spectrometer on INTEGRAL, SPI, we detected $^{56}$Ni $\gamma$-ray lines at 158 and 812 keV at early times with flux levels corresponding to roughly 10% of the total expected amount of $^{56}$Ni, and at relatively small velocities. This implies some mechanism to create a major amout of $^{56}$Ni at the outskirts, and at the same time to break the spherical symmetry of the supernova. One plausible explanation would be a belt accreted from a He companion star, exploding, and triggering the explosion of the white dwarf. The full set of observations of SN2014J show $^{56}$Co $\gamma$-ray lines at 847 and 1238 keV, and we determine for the first time a SN Ia $\gamma$-ray light curve. A new method is presented for the determination of electrochemically labile iron in estuarine and coastal seawater. The method is based on differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) at a rotating silver-alloy disk electrode. The voltammetric parameters include a plating potential of −1.5 V and an activation potential of −5 V for 10s; the seawater is at the original sample pH. The main finding is the presence of a peak for low nmol L−1 levels of iron at −0.55 V ascribed to elemental iron deposited on the bare silver alloy electrode. We present copper abundances for 14 red giant stars in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph), showing that [Cu/Fe] is deficient by ~0.5 dex, relative to the Galactic trend. This is most easily understood as due to an enhanced contribution of iron peak nucleosynthesis products from Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The deficient [Cu/Fe] ratios might also be the result of a metallicity-dependent yield from SNe Ia, similar to previous conclusions for Mn, although SN Ia nucleosynthesis predictions suggest a negligible Cu yield. The enhanced SN Ia products, suggested by our low [Cu/Fe] ratios, fit a leaky box chemical evolution scenario for the Sgr dSph, where ejecta from the old, metal-poor, population overwhelmed nucleosynthesis products from younger generations, resulting in young stars with uncharacteristic compositions. The only other system known to have unusually low [Cu/Fe] is the Galactic globular cluster ω Cen, which, like the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, has strong enhancements of s-process elements. Thus, our copper abundances lend support to the idea that ω Cen is the remaining nucleus of an accreted dwarf galaxy.

An elemental abundance analysis of the cool magnetic CP star HR 8216 (= HD204411) was performed using 2.4 A mm -1 Dominion Astrophysical Observatory Reticon exposures covering 1 λ3830-4770 with a typical signal-to-noise ratio of 200 taken with the long camera of the 1.22-m telescope. The spectrograms were measured interactively with the graphics computer program REDUCE. The fine analysis used an ATLAS9 metal-rich model atmosphere, the predictions of which best-matched the optical region fluxes and the Hy profile. The anomalies of HR 8216 are primarily an enhancement of many iron peak elements with the rare earths elements much less enhanced than in many similar cool magnetic CP stars. Using the results of the fine analysis the spectrum was synthesized. Comparison with the observed spectrum showed that the agreement is good but did not fully account for all of the observed line spectrum.

We present our analysis of elemental abundances in the atmospheres of 16 classical barium stars derived from high-resolution spectra and model atmospheres. Comparison of the results with analogous data for moderate barium stars and normal red giants shows that the abundance patterns for elements before the iron peak are the same for all three groups of red giants, testifying to a similar origin. For binary systems, we confirm the influence of the orbital period and, hence, the component separation, on the overabundance of s-process elements. The amount of enrichment in s-process elements is also influenced by mass, metallicity, and evolutionary phase. Any of these parameters can be important in individual objects.

A spectrum synthesis analysis for photospheric lines in the magnetic B star HR 5049 is presented, based on a high quality spectrogram obtained with the EMMI spectrograph attached to the NTT at ESO. It is found that light elements such as He, C and O are under-abundant. One of the most notable features is the deficiency of He by more than − 2.0 dex. Co and Cl are over-abundant by +3.5 dex and +1.9 dex, respectively. Other iron peak elements are over-abundant ranging from +0.47 dex (Ti  )t o+1.94 dex (Cr ). For rare earth elements, the lines of once-ionized species are generally weak, while the third spectra (especially those of Pr and Nd) are very prominent. Although rare earth elements show significant over-abundances ranging from +3.0 dex to as large as +4.0 dex, Ba has the solar abundance. The Nd-Pr abundance difference, which shows an apparent decreasing trend with increasing effective temperature among CP stars, is found to be unusually small in HR 5049.

Using atmosphere models based on high-resolution spectra, we have derived the abundances of chemical elements in the atmospheres of seven classical barium stars and compared them with the elemental abundances of moderate barium stars and normal red giants. The behavior of elements up to the iron peak is the same in all three groups of giants, providing evidence that they have a common origin. The dependence of the anomalous abundances of s-process elements on stellar mass and metallicity is qualitatively similar for all three groups, probably indicating that a substantial role is played by the evolutionary phase of the stars. We conclude that the barium-star phenomenon and the overabundances of s-process elements in barium stars cannot be explained as a consequence of binarity alone. The extent to which the s-process elements are overabundant is affected by the mass, metallicity, and evolutionary phase of the given star, and any of these parameters may prove to be important in a specific object.

We present abundances of Ti, Fe, and Ni as well as 10 post-iron-peak elements in the extrinsic, Galactic S star HD 35155. This star is of interest because it shows many characteristics of symbiotic stars and displays the same pattern of abundance enhancements observed in yellow symbiotic stars. It is clear that HD 35155 is associated with the symbiotic stars and provides an important link between the symbiotic phenomena and chemically peculiar stars. In addition, the abundance ratio of heavy to light s-process elements correlates with the metallicity of HD 35155, as is expected if the 13C neutron source drives the s-process. Our models predict that the abundance of lead should be enhanced by a factor of between 50 to 500 in HD 35155.

We present the iron abundance and abundance ratios for 18 elements with respect to Fe in a sample of stars with a wide range in luminosity from luminous giants to stars near the turnoff in the globular cluster M5. The analyzed spectra, obtained with HIRES at the Keck Observatory, are of high dispersion (R=35,000). We find that the neutron capture, the iron peak and the alpha-element abundance ratios show no trend with Teff, and low scatter around the mean between the top of the RGB and near the main sequence turnoff To within the precision of the measurements (~0.1 dex), gravitationally induced heavy element diffusion does not appear to be present among the stars near the main sequence turnoff studied here. Our work and other recent studies suggest that heavy element diffusion is inhibited in the surface layers of metal poor stars. Differences in the Na abundance from star to star which extend to the main sequence turnoff are detected in our sample in M5. The anti-correlation between O and Na abundances, observed in other metal poor globular clusters, is not detected in our sample, but it may be hidden among stars with only upper limits for their O abundances. Overall the abundance ratios of M5 appear very similar to those of M71, with the possible exception of the neutron capture element Ba, where we argue that the apparent difference may be due to difficulties in the analysis. As in M71, the alpha-elements Mg, Ca, Si and Ti are overabundant relative to Fe. The results of our abundance analysis of 25 stars in M5 provide further evidence of abundance variations among specific light elements at unexpectedly low luminosities, which cannot be explained by our current understanding of stellar evolution., 56 pages, 14 figures, AJ in press (Jan 2003)

This work is a modern revisitation of an old idea of great chemists of the past such as Berthelot, Mendeleev, Cloez and Moissan: the formation of organic matter under pre-biotic conditions starting from the hydrolysis of metal carbides. This idea was originally proposed for the formation of petroleum in the Earth and was extended to other bodies of the solar system by Sokolov at the end of the 19th century. The reason for this revisitation lies in the fact that complex organic matter resembling a petroleum fraction may exist in certain protoplanetary nebulae. The present work starts with a survey of the theory of the inorganic origin of petroleum and reports on current evidence for its derivation from residues of formerly living matter, but also considers theories that admit both a biogenic and an abiogenic origin for petroleum. By considering the cosmic abundance of elements and the evidence concerning the presence of carbides in meteorites, we discuss the formation, structure and hydrolysis products derived from the metal carbides of the iron peak of cosmic elemental abundance. Chromium carbide (Cr3C2) has then been used as a model compound for all the key carbides of the iron peak of the cosmic abundance (Cr, Fe, Ni, V, Mn, Co) and it has been hydrolysed under different conditions and the hydrocarbons formed have been analysed using electronic spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode-array detector (HPLC-DAD) and by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Methane, a series of about 20 different alkenes with single and conjugated double bonds have been detected. Paraffins are formed simultaneously with the alkene series but no acetylenic hydrocarbons have been detected. This study confirms early works considering the easy hydrolysis of the carbides of Cr, Fe, Ni, Mn and Co with the formation of H2, a series of alkanes including methane and a series of alkenes including ethylene. The peculiar behaviour of copper carbide (copper is inside the iron peak of the cosmic abundances) has been discussed as well. A survey of the hydrolytic behaviour of other carbides has been included so that all lanthanides and actinides are considered as well as carbides of the second and third groups of the periodic table of elements and highly refractory carbides such as those of Ti, Zr, Ta and W have been briefly discussed. Furthermore, the hydrolysis of mixed metal carbides and nitrides is discussed, which gives a mixture of extremely interesting molecules that are considered the raw materials for the formation of the molecules of life: guanidine, methyl hydrazine, formic acid, hydrogen cyanide, urea, cyanamide, methylamine and formaldehyde. The hydrolysis of metal carbides has also been discussed within the framework of other reactions that are well considered in the present day in an astrochemical context: the ion–molecule reaction, the Miller–Urey and the Sagan–Kaare synthesis as well as the catalytic Fischer–Tropsch synthesis and the radiation-driven Fischer–Tropsch synthesis.

An analysis of the abundances of the Silicon star HD 206653 is presented using an ATLAS9 model atmosphere and observational material taken with a REOSC echelle spectrograph attached to the Jorge Sahade 2.15 m telescope at CASLEO. The light elements are solar or deficient except silicon which is overabundant by a factor of 5. The iron peak elements are all overabundant by factors between 10 and 50.
