Purpose: To improve teacher education and education quality, this study explores the experiences and learning of student teachers during their practice instruction in public high schools in the Philippines. Methodology: Semi-structured, in-depth focus group discussions with student teachers were conducted employing a phenomenological research design using Colaizzi's approach. Eight groups of student teachers participated in the focus group discussions (FGDs). Each group comprised five students, with 40 participants in total. Findings: According to the findings, student teachers often struggle with the practical realities of teaching in public school and real-world scenarios instead of controlled training environments. Additionally, teaching-related learning experiences are crucial for adapting to diverse student characteristics and developing teaching styles. A mentoring program is found to be essential, despite issues of communication and confidence. Moreover, having supportive mentors play a significant role in helping student teachers to become effective educators. The study also emphasized the need to enhance the teaching and learning setting through digital tools. Significance: This study provides important insights into the obstacles and potential for improving teacher education quality in the Philippines and expanding the teaching practice program.

Previous research has underscored the negative effects on students of the abrupt shift to online delivery of education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Positive education applies the principles of positive psychology to education, which highlights the importance of students' well-being and fosters holistic development. This study investigated whether students' well-being at the start of the semester can predict their academic engagement mid-way through the semester. We collected data on students' well-being and academic engagement in two waves; first, at the beginning of the semester (Time 1) and then 3 months in the semester (Time 2). We tested the students' general well-being and the positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment (PERMA) elements at Time 1 with their academic engagement in terms of behavioral, emotional, and cognitive facets at Time 2. Our results show that general well-being at Time positively predicts their total academic engagement and all engagement facets. However, among the PERMA elements, the Meaning element is not correlated with students' engagement or any of its facets. We also tested whether there was a significant change in student well-being and engagement from the start of the semester and midway through. We found that there is a significant small increase in well-being and engagement. Our findings suggest the importance of well-being as a potentially positive resource for students where students with better well-being tend to be more academically engaged. Educational institutions may consider fostering student well-being in their goals to improve the academic success of students.

BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been linked to adverse birth outcomes that have been reported to be induced by oxidative stress, but few epidemiological studies to date have evaluated associations between urinary PAH metabolites and oxidative stress biomarkers in pregnancy and identified critical periods for these outcomes and PAH exposures in pregnancy. METHODS: A cohort of pregnant women was recruited early in pregnancy from antenatal clinics at the University of California Los Angeles during 2016-2019. We collected urine samples up to three times during pregnancy in a total of 159 women enrolled in the cohort. A total of 7 PAH metabolites and 2 oxidative stress biomarkers [malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG)] were measured in all available urine samples. Using multiple linear regression models, we estimated the percentage change (%) and 95% confidence interval (CI) in 8-OHdG and MDA measured at each sample collection time per doubling of PAH metabolite concentrations. Furthermore, we used linear mixed models with a random intercept for participant to estimate the associations between PAH metabolite and oxidative stress biomarker concentrations across multiple time points in pregnancy. RESULTS: Most PAH metabolites were positively associated with both urinary oxidative stress biomarkers, MDA and 8-OHdG, with stronger associations in early and late pregnancy. A doubling of each urinary PAH metabolite concentration increased MDA concentrations by 5.8-41.1% and 8-OHdG concentrations by 13.8-49.7%. Linear mixed model results were consistent with those from linear regression models for each gestational sampling period. CONCLUSION: Urinary PAH metabolites are associated with increases in oxidative stress biomarkers during pregnancy, especially in early and late pregnancy.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common comorbidity among Parkinsons disease (PD) patients. Yet, little is known about dysregulated pathways that are unique in PD patients with T2DM. We applied high-resolution metabolomic profiling in serum samples of 636 PD and 253 non-PD participants recruited from Central California. We conducted an initial discovery metabolome-wide association and pathway enrichment analysis. After adjusting for multiple testing, in positive (or negative) ion mode, 30 (25) metabolic features were associated with T2DM in both PD and non-PD participants, 162 (108) only in PD participants, and 32 (7) only in non-PD participants. Pathway enrichment analysis identified 17 enriched pathways associated with T2DM in both the PD and non-PD participants, 26 pathways only in PD participants, and 5 pathways only in non-PD participants. Several amino acid, nucleic acids, and fatty acid metabolisms were associated with T2DM only in the PD patient group suggesting a possible link between PD and T2DM.

OBJECTIVE:  The aim of Placental Assessment in Response to Environmental Pollution Study (PARENTs) was to determine whether imaging of the placenta by novel multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques in early pregnancy could help predict adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) due to ischemic placental disease (IPD). Additionally, we sought to determine maternal characteristics and environmental risk factors that contribute to IPD and secondary APOs. STUDY DESIGN:  Potential patients in their first trimester of pregnancy, who agreed to MRI of the placenta and measures of assessment of environmental pollution, were recruited into PARENTs, a prospective population-based cohort study. Participants were seen at three study visits during pregnancy and again at their delivery from 2015 to 2019. We collected data from interviews, chart abstractions, and imaging. Maternal biospecimens (serum, plasma, and urine) at antepartum study visits and delivery specimens (placenta, cord, and maternal blood) were collected, processed, and stored. The primary outcome was a composite of IPD, which included any of the following: placental abruption, hypertensive disease of pregnancy, fetal growth restriction, or a newborn of small for gestational age. RESULTS:  In this pilot cohort, of the 190 patients who completed pregnancy to viable delivery, 50 (26%) developed IPD. Among demographic characteristics, having a history of prior IPD in multiparous women was associated with the development of IPD. In the multiple novel perfusion measurements taken of the in vivo placenta using MRI, decreased high placental blood flow (mL/100 g/min) in early pregnancy (between 14 and 16 weeks) was found to be significantly associated with the later development of IPD. CONCLUSION:  Successful recruitment of the PARENTs prospective cohort demonstrated the feasibility and acceptability of the use of MRI in human pregnancy to study the placenta in vivo and at the same time collect environmental exposure data. Analysis is ongoing and we hope these methods will assist researchers in the design of prospective imaging studies of pregnancy. The global COVID-19 pandemic has caused many adaptations to preservice teacher preparation, especially supporting completion of field-based internship experiences. This mixed methods research project utilized surveys to analyze the impact of virtual settings on (1) intern (n=14) and mentor teacher (n=5) experiences and relationships; and (2) the use of instructional technology, specifically Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). Key findings indicated (1) reversals of traditional mentor/intern relationships; and (2) the role of technology as the foundation of instructional decision-making, resulting in challenges when adapting pedagogies of classroom management, assessment, and differentiation to virtual settings.

This qualitative study explored the use of the terms high-, low-, and no-tech among preservice teachers during a sudden shift to virtual instruction. Focus areas included how preservice teachers and mentor teachers described the role and purpose of these varied levels of technology for their teaching in a virtual setting. The findings show that choices related to levels of technology use are nuanced and complicated and include a need for consideration of the context. We include a simplified framework to guide future instructional decisions for the integration of technology at various levels.

Humans have increasing opportunities to offload internal cognitive demand, such as by setting reminders to aid future memory performance. Here, we examine how children begin to balance mind and world: weighing up when to offload cognition and when to rely on their unaided capacities. Australian children aged 6 to 9 years (N = 120) were tasked with remembering the locations of 1, 3, 5, and 7 targets hidden under 25 cups. In the critical test phase, children were provided with a limited number of ‘tokens' to distribute across trials, which they could use to mark target locations and assist future performance. Following the final search period, children were invited to evaluate and adjust their initial allocation. Results showed that 8- to 9-year-olds prospectively allocated proportionately more tokens to difficult trials, whereas 6- to 7-year-olds did so only in retrospect. Throughout childhood, humans become increasingly adept at balancing internal and external cognition.

It has been suggested that gut microbiota influence Parkinson's disease (PD) via the gut-brain axis. Here, we examine associations between diet and gut microbiome composition and its predicted functional pathways in patients with PD. We assessed gut microbiota in fecal samples from 85 PD patients in central California using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Diet quality was assessed by calculating the Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) based on the Diet History Questionnaire II. We examined associations of diet quality, fiber, and added sugar intake with microbial diversity, composition, taxon abundance, and predicted metagenomic profiles, adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, and sequencing platform. Higher HEI scores and fiber intake were associated with an increase in putative anti-inflammatory butyrate-producing bacteria, such as the genera Butyricicoccus and Coprococcus 1. Conversely, higher added sugar intake was associated with an increase in putative pro-inflammatory bacteria, such as the genera Klebsiella. Predictive metagenomics suggested that bacterial genes involved in the biosynthesis of lipopolysaccharide decreased with higher HEI scores, whereas a simultaneous decrease in genes involved in taurine degradation indicates less neuroinflammation. We found that a healthy diet, fiber, and added sugar intake affect the gut microbiome composition and its predicted metagenomic function in PD patients. This suggests that a healthy diet may support gut microbiome that has a positive influence on PD risk and progression.

BackgroundOrganophosphorus pesticides (OP) have been associated with various human health conditions. Animal experiments and in-vitro models suggested that OP may also affect the gut microbiota. We examined associations between ambient chronic exposure to OP and gut microbial changes in humans.MethodsWe recruited 190 participants from a community-based epidemiologic study of Parkinson's disease living in a region known for heavy agricultural pesticide use in California. Of these, 61% of participants had Parkinson's disease and their mean age was 72 years. Microbiome and predicted metagenome data were generated by 16S rRNA gene sequencing of fecal samples. Ambient long-term OP exposures were assessed using pesticide application records combined with residential addresses in a geographic information system. We examined gut microbiome differences due to OP exposures, specifically differences in microbial diversity based on the Shannon index and Bray-Curtis dissimilarities, and differential taxa abundance and predicted Metacyc pathway expression relying on regression models and adjusting for potential confounders.ResultsOP exposure was not associated with alpha or beta diversity of the gut microbiome. However, the predicted metagenome was sparser and less evenly expressed among those highly exposed to OP (p = 0.04). Additionally, we found that the abundance of two bacterial families, 22 genera, and the predicted expression of 34 Metacyc pathways were associated with long-term OP exposure. These pathways included perturbed processes related to cellular respiration, increased biosynthesis and degradation of compounds related to bacterial wall structure, increased biosynthesis of RNA/DNA precursors, and decreased synthesis of Vitamin B1 and B6.ConclusionIn support of previous animal studies and in-vitro findings, our results suggest that ambient chronic OP pesticide exposure alters gut microbiome composition and its predicted metabolism in humans.

BACKGROUND: Untargeted high-resolution metabolomic profiling provides simultaneous measurement of thousands of metabolites. Metabolic networks based on these data can help uncover disease-related perturbations across interconnected pathways. OBJECTIVE: Identify metabolic disturbances associated with Parkinsons disease (PD) in two population-based studies using untargeted metabolomics. METHODS: We performed a metabolome-wide association study (MWAS) of PD using serum-based untargeted metabolomics data derived from liquid chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) using two distinct population-based case-control populations. We also combined our results with a previous publication of 34 metabolites linked to PD in a large-scale, untargeted MWAS to assess external validation. RESULTS: LC-HRMS detected 4,762 metabolites for analysis (HILIC: 2716 metabolites; C18: 2046 metabolites). We identified 296 features associated with PD at FDR

Abstract The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) suffers from one of the highest malaria burdens worldwide, but information on its Anopheles vector populations is relatively limited. Preventative malaria control in DRC is reliant on pyrethroid-treated nets, raising concerns over the potential impacts of insecticide resistance. We sampled Anopheles gambiae from three geographically distinct populations (Kimpese, Kapolowe and Mikalayi) in southern DRC, collecting from three sub-sites per population and characterising mosquito collections from each for resistance to pyrethroids using WHO tube bioassays. Abstract CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing requires high efficiency to be routinely implemented, especially in species which are laborious and slow to transform. This requirement intensifies further when targeting multiple genes simultaneously, which is required for genetic screening or more complex genome engineering. Species in the Citrus genus fall into this category. Here we describe a series of experiments with the collective aim of improving multiplex gene editing in the Carrizo citrange cultivar using tRNA-based sgRNA arrays. We evaluate a range of promoters for their efficacy in such experiments and achieve significant improvements by optimizing the expression of both the Cas9 endonuclease and the sgRNA array. In the case of the former we find the UBQ10 or RPS5a promoters from Arabidopsis driving the zCas9i endonuclease variant useful for achieving high levels of editing. The choice of promoter expressing the sgRNA array also had a large impact on gene editing efficiency across multiple targets. In this respect Pol III promoters perform especially well, but we also demonstrate that the UBQ10 and ES8Z promoters from Arabidopsis are robust alternatives. Ultimately, this study provides a quantitative insight into CRISPR/Cas9 vector design that has practical application in the simultaneous editing of multiple genes in Citrus, and potentially other eudicot plant species.

Abstract Background The Sto. Niño site in Benguet province, Philippines was once a mining area that has now been transformed into an agricultural land. In this area, there has been significant integration of the three indigenous people (IPs) Ibaloi, Kankanaeys and Kalanguyas with the Ilocano community. These IPs safeguard biodiversity and traditional knowledge, including medicinal plant use. However, the documentation of these plant species and their medicinal applications has not been systematic, with the resultant loss of knowledge across generations. This study aims to document the medicinal and ritual plants used by the indigenous communities at the site, in order to preserve and disseminate traditional medicinal knowledge that would otherwise be lost. Methods Ethnobotanical data were collected in Sto. Niño, Brgy. Ambassador, Municipality of Tublay, Benguet, Philippines, and collected through semi-structured interviews, together with focus group discussions (FGD). A total of 100 residents (39 male and 61 female) were interviewed. Among them, 12 were key interviewees, including community elders and farmers, while the rest were selected through the convenience and snowball technique. Demographic information collected from the interviewees included age, gender, and occupation. Ethnobotanical information collected focused on medicinal plants, including the specific parts of plants used, methods of preparation, modes of treatment, and the types of ailments treated. Ethnobotanical quantitative indices of the relative frequency of citations (RFC) and informant consensus factor (ICF) were calculated to evaluate the plant species that were utilized by the community. Results A total of 28 medicinal plants from 20 different families and 6 ritual plants from 5 different families were documented. Asteraceae, Poaceae, and Lamiaceae (10.71%) family are the most mentioned medicinal plant species, followed by Myrtaceae and Euphorbiaceae (7.14%). The most widely used growth form were herbs (46.4%), while leaves (61.5%) were the most utilized plant part, and the preparation of a decoction (62.2%) was the most preferred method of processing and application. The medicinal plants were most commonly utilized for wound-healing, cough and colds, stomachache and kidney trouble, whereas ritual plants were largely used for healing, protection, and funeral ceremonies. Conclusion This study marks the first report on the medicinal and ritual plants used by a group of indigenous communities in Sto. Niño, Brgy. Ambassador, Tublay, Benguet Province. The data collected show that plant species belonging to the Asteraceae, Poaceae, and Lamiaceae family were the most mentioned and should be further evaluated by pharmacological analysis to assess their wider use for medicinal treatment.

Purpose: This paper aims to help higher education institutions (HEIs) develop a better understanding of student support and services needs, thereby enabling them to allocate limited resources for initiatives that effectively improve student experience. Design/methodology/approach: An assessment framework following the Kano analysis is developed to categorize student service features based on customer satisfaction and need fulfillment. The framework is used at a local university, using 23 service features listed as minimum requirements by the national regulatory body for education. Analysis of the satisfaction survey results and prioritization are based on quality indices derived from a factor of importance and the satisfaction gap. A survey was conducted for two academic years to generate a comparison of results. Findings: Of the list mandated as minimum requirements for HEIs, the study revealed that no features were regarded as "must-be," eight as performing, 14 as attractive and one as indifferent by the students. As these results were disaggregated per year level, the natural decay of delight as in the Kano theory was exhibited as there were less attractive features for students who have been in the university longest. After a full-year academic cycle, results compared to the baseline figures seemed to reveal of impact of the achievement of performance targets by the units rendering specific activities on client satisfaction. Research limitations/implications: Further rounds of the study are needed to build up more data sets on the relationship between objective performance and satisfaction level for performing features, mindful that this categorization is also bound to change along the way. Practical implications: As HEIs in the Philippines journey towards the establishment of their own respective internal quality assurance systems, this study provides a practical approach for institutions to transform a mere list of student services for compliance into a strategic tool to enhance the student experience. Originality/value: In the context of continuous quality improvement, the study presents how the qualitative Kano model, along with simple quantitative tools in the methodology, can be utilized not only in the planning stage of service design but also in closing the planning, doing, checking and acting (PDCA) cycle and opening the quality improvement spiral.

BACKGROUND: Few resources exist to support finding journals that accept case reports by specialty. In 2016, Katherine Akers compiled a list of 160 journals that accepted case reports, which many librarians continue to use 7 years later. Because journals editorial policies and submission guidelines evolve, finding publication venues for case reports poses a dynamic problem, consisting of reviewing a journals author guidelines to determine if the journal accepts case report manuscripts. This project aimed to create a more up to date and extensive list of journals that currently accept case reports. CASE PRESENTATION: 1,874 journal titles were downloaded from PubMed. The team reviewed each journal and identified journal titles that accept case reports. Additional inclusion factors included being indexed in MEDLINE, accessible on the internet, and accepting and publishing English language submissions. DISCUSSION: The new journal list includes 1,028 journals covering 129 specialties and is available on the Open Science Framework public page.

BACKGROUND: Although many studies have linked prenatal exposure to PM2.5 to adverse birth outcomes, little is known about the effects of exposure to specific constituents of PM2.5 or mechanisms that contribute to these outcomes. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to investigate effects of oxidative potential and PM2.5 metal components from non-exhaust traffic emissions, such as brake and tire wear, on the risk of preterm birth (PTB) and term low birth weight (TLBW). METHODS: For a birth cohort of 285,614 singletons born in Los Angeles County, California, in the period 2017-2019, we estimated speciated PM2.5 exposures modeled from land use regression with cokriging, including brake and tire wear related metals (barium and zinc), black carbon, and three markers of oxidative potential (OP), including modeled reactive oxygen species based on measured iron and copper (ROS), OH formation (OPOH), and dithiothreitol (DTT) loss (OPDTT). Using logistic regression, we estimated odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for PTB and TLBW with speciated PM2.5 exposures and PM2.5 mass as continuous variables scaled by their interquartile range (IQR). RESULTS: For both metals and oxidative potential metrics, we estimated increased risks for PTB (ORs ranging from 1.01 to 1.03) and TLBW (ORs ranging from 1.02 to 1.05) per IQR exposure increment that were robust to adjustment for PM2.5 mass. Associations for PM2.5 mass, black carbon, metal components, and oxidative potential (especially ROS and OPOH) with adverse birth outcomes were stronger in Hispanic, Black, and mixed-race or Native American women. DISCUSSION: Our results indicate that exposure to PM2.5 metals from brake and tire wear and particle components that contribute to oxidative potential were associated with an increased risk of PTB and TLBW in Los Angeles County, particularly among Hispanic, Black, and mixed-race or Native American women. Thus, reduction of PM2.5 mass only may not be sufficient to protect the most vulnerable pregnant women and children from adverse effects due to traffic source exposures. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP12196.

In this study, we work towards a strategy to measure and enhance the quality of interactions in discussion forums at scale. We present a machine learning (ML) model which identifies the phase of cognitive presence exhibited by a student's post and suggest future applications of such a model to help online students develop higher-order thinking. We collect discussion forum transcript data from two online courses: CS1301 (an introductory computer programming MOOC) offered by edX and CS6601 (a graduate course on artificial intelligence) which uses the Piazza online discussion tool. We manually code a random sample of students' posts based on the Community of Inquiry coding scheme and explore trends in cognitive presence within and across the courses. We further use this coded data to analyze the relationship between students' observed cognitive presence and course grades. In terms of testing and building an ML model, we use a Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers model that uses a deep learning technique to train large text corpus and fine-tune the language model. Our results suggest that deeper cognitive engagement with course concepts, as expressed by higher cognitive presence, are associated with better learning outcomes for students in both course settings. Our ML approach achieves 92.5% accuracy on the classification task, motivating the use of ML for instructional interventions in online courses. We expect that our research study will not only contribute to extending the literature on cognitive presence but also have a beneficial impact on online instructors or curriculum developers in higher education.

Abstract Background Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is one of the most effective malaria control tools. However, its application has become limited to specific contexts due to the increased costs of IRS products and implementation programmes. Selective spraying—selective spray targeted to particular areas/surfaces of dwellings—has been proposed to maintain the malaria control and resistance-management benefits of IRS while decreasing the costs of the intervention. Methods A literature search was conducted to find (1) studies that assessed the resting behaviour of Anopheles mosquitoes and (2) studies that evaluated the impact of selective spraying on entomological and malaria outcomes. Additional articles were identified through hand searches of all references cited in articles identified through the initial search. A cost model was developed from PMI VectorLink IRS country programmes, and comparative cost analysis reports to describe the overall cost benefits of selective IRS. Results In some studies, there appeared to be a clear resting preference for certain Anopheles species in terms of the height at which they rested. However, for other species, and particularly the major African malaria vectors, a clear resting pattern was not detected. Furthermore, resting behaviour was not measured in a standardized way. For the selective spray studies that were assessed, there was a wide range of spray configurations, which complicates the comparison of methods. Many of these spray techniques were effective and resulted in reported 25–68% cost savings and reduced use of insecticide. The reported cost savings in the literature do not always consider all of the IRS implementation costs. Using the IRS cost model, these savings ranged from 17 to 29% for programs that targeted Anopheles spp. and 18–41% for programmes that targeted Aedes aegypti. Conclusions Resting behaviour is generally measured in a simplistic way; noting the resting spot of mosquitoes in the morning. This is likely an oversimplification, and there is a need for better monitoring of resting mosquitoes. This may improve the target surface for selective spray techniques, which could reduce the cost of IRS while maintaining its effectiveness. Reporting of cost savings should be calculated considering the entire implementation costs, and a cost model was provided for future calculations.

Abstract Purpose Researchers have theorized that interactions between appetitive and circadian disruptions result in increased eating disorder (ED) symptoms and insomnia. However, it is unclear how specific insomnia symptoms present among people with EDs and if the latent structure of insomnia in this population is similar to that of people with insomnia disorder. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis of data collected on ED and insomnia symptoms using a subset of students (N = 547; 79.52% female) with probable EDs at a large Midwestern American university. Item response theory (IRT) for polytomous items was performed to identify item difficulty, discrimination, and information parameters for the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). IRT parameters were compared to those established in a 2011 study of people diagnosed with insomnia disorder by Morin and colleagues. Results Clinically significant insomnia symptoms were common among students with ED pathology and symptom endorsement for each ISI item ranged from 40.77 to 86.65%. ISI items assessing insomnia-related impairment and distress showed better discriminative capacities and had higher item information than items assessing sleep behavior alterations (i.e., difficulties falling asleep, difficulties maintaining sleep, waking too early). Item discrimination was largely similar among the ED sample compared to previous IRT analyses in an insomnia disorder sample. Conclusion Insomnia symptoms are common among university students with probable EDs and similar to those reported by people with insomnia disorder. When considering insomnia assessment, items assessing sleep behaviors alone are likely inadequate to provide information about insomnia severity among people with EDs. Abstract Objectives Both disordered eating and disturbed sleep represent significant threats to mental health. Accumulating evidence suggests that disordered eating behaviors and sleep problems co-occur. A majority of current research, however, has focused on these behaviors as components of eating disorder diagnoses, rather than investigating the independent associations of transdiagnostic disordered eating behaviors and sleep. The present study sought to examine fasting, binge eating, self-induced vomiting, laxative or diuretic misuse, and driven exercise as predictors of sleep quality complaints. Method An online sample of 648 U.S. adults completed the Eating Disorder Examination - Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Patient Health Care Questionnaire-2 as part of a larger parent study. BackgroundParkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder among older adults worldwide. Currently, studies of PD progression rely primarily on White non-Latino (WNL) patients. Here, we compare clinical profiles and PD progression in Latino and WNL patients enrolled in a community-based study in rural Central California.MethodPD patients within 5 years of diagnosis were identified from 3 counties between 2001 and 2015. During up to 3 visits, participants were examined by movement disorders specialists and interviewed. We analyzed cross-sectional differences in PD clinical features severity at each study visit and used linear mixed models and Cox proportional hazards models to compare motor, nonmotor, and disability progression longitudinally and to assess time to death in Latinos compared to WNL patients.ResultsOf 775 patients included, 138 (18%) self-identified as Latino and presented with earlier age at diagnosis (63.6 vs 68.9) and death (78.6 vs 81.5) than WNL. Motor (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.17 [0.71, 1.94]) and nonmotor symptoms did not progress faster in Latino versus WNL patients after accounting for differences in baseline symptom severity. However, Latino patients progressed to disability stages according to Hoehn and Yahr faster than WNL (HR = 1.81 [1.11, 2.96]). Motor and nonmotor symptoms in Latino patients were also medically managed less well than in WNL.ConclusionsOur PD study with a large proportion of Latino enrollees and progression data reveals disparities in clinical features and progression by ethnicity that may reflect healthcare access and structural socioeconomic disadvantages in Latino patients with PD.

Introduction Appropriate and healthy feeding practices can enhance a child’s health, prevent obesity and reduce chronic metabolic disease risks. Given the ethnic variations in feeding practices and metabolic risk, interventions must be community specific. Culturally tailored grassroots interventions targeting infant feeding can induce behavioural changes, mitigating chronic metabolic disease risks in later life.The aim of this study was to explore participant feedback and inform intervention delivery methods within marginalised communities.Methods A pilot three-arm cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted in the Tower Hamlets and Newham boroughs of London, involving community participatory learning and action groups. The study recruited 186 South Asian (Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Sri Lankan) mothers or carers of children aged 0–2 years. Participants in intervention arms were invited to either face to face or online intervention arms, facilitated by trained multilingual community facilitators (CFs), offering culturally informed discussions on child nutrition and care practices. The qualitative study was embedded within this trial, collecting feedback through interviews and focus groups. Thematic analysis was employed to identify key themes, focusing on intervention fidelity and acceptance.Results Of the initial attendees, 42 (from the remaining 153 at the study’s conclusion) and 9 CFs offered feedback on the intervention’s delivery and suggestions for enhancing community-based interventions’ success. Key findings highlighted the need for a more flexible approach to boost participation and the significance of providing accessible, translated documents and resources. Participants expressed a strong preference for a hybrid model of intervention delivery, combining face-to-face and online sessions to accommodate diverse needs.Conclusion Parenting interventions, particularly for new mothers, may engage more of the target population by adopting a hybrid design. This would provide attendees with the flexibility to select the delivery method, session timings and the option to participate at any stage of the intervention. The study underscores the importance of cultural tailoring and flexible delivery methods in enhancing participation and engagement in community-based health interventions.
