Halyomorpha halysis an invasive, widespread stink bug for which only short-term solutions are currently available for pest control worldwide. The need for long-term management solutions forH. halyshas driven studies on augmentative and classical biological control of this species, especially by its egg parasitoids. Numerous investigations in Asia, USA, and Europe on native and exotic egg parasitoids ofH. halys, and the effects on non-target pentatomids, have improved the global knowledge of parasitoid-host relationships, uncovered new associations, and led to the discovery of new species. This trend continues withAcroclisoides sinicus, a pteromalid that was described in the 1980’s from Asia. In this work we report recent findings of this species in North America and Europe. Moreover, we propose thatAcroclisoides solussyn. nov., a species described originally from the USA, is conspecific withA. sinicusbased on morphological and molecular analysis.

Brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, is native to Asia and has invaded North America and Europe inflicting serious agricultural damage to specialty and row crops. Tools to monitor the spread of H. halys include traps baited with the two-component aggregation pheromone (PHER), (3S,6S,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol and (3R,6S,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol, and pheromone synergist, methyl (2E,4E,6Z)-decatrienoate (MDT). Here, an international team of researchers conducted trials aimed at evaluating prototype commercial lures for H. halys to establish relative attractiveness of: 1) low and high loading rates of PHER and MDT for monitoring tools and attract and kill tactics; 2) polyethylene lure delivery substrates; and 3) the inclusion of ethyl (2E,4E,6Z)-decatrieonate (EDT), a compound that enhances captures when combined with PHER in lures. In general, PHER loading rate had a greater impact on overall trap captures compared with loading of MDT, but reductions in PHER loading and accompanying lower trap captures could be offset by increasing loading of MDT. As MDT is less expensive to produce, these findings enable reduced production costs. Traps baited with lures containing PHER and EDT resulted in numerically increased captures when EDT was loaded at a high rate, but captures were not significantly greater than those traps baited with lures containing standard PHER and MDT. Experimental polyethylene vial dispensers did not outperform standard lure dispensers; trap captures were significantly lower in most cases. Ultimately, these results will enable refinement of commercially available lures for H. halys to balance attraction and sensitivity with production cost. Simple Summary The management of invasive alien species is a very challenging task. For the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys), classical biological control has been identified as the most suitable method to sustainably reduce its populations in the long-term. Among its natural enemies, two species were identified as the most promising candidates for biocontrol, Trissolcus japonicus and Trissolcus mitsukurii. Populations of these two species have recently been detected in Europe and to assess their distribution, a large-scale study was performed. Combining several monitoring methods, in four months (May–September 2019), a wide area covering northern Italy and parts of Switzerland was surveyed. The results showed that both species have spread into all types of habitats where H. halys is present and the parasitization of native species was rarely observed. Among native species, Anastatus bifasciatus was the predominant parasitoid of H. halys. This study supported the development of the first release program of Tr. japonicus in Europe. Abstract The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys is an invasive agricultural pest with a worldwide distribution. Classical biological control has been identified as the most promising method to reduce the populations of H. halys. Adventive populations of two candidates for releases, Trissolcus japonicus and Trissolcus mitsukurii, have recently been detected in Europe. To assess their distribution and abundance, a large-scale survey was performed. From May to September 2019, a wide area covering northern Italy and parts of Switzerland was surveyed, highlighting the expanding distribution of both Tr. japonicus and Tr. mitsukurii. Within four years after their first detection in Europe, both species have rapidly spread into all types of habitats where H. halys is present, showing a wide distribution and continuous expansion. Both exotic Trissolcus showed high levels of parasitism rate towards H. halys, while parasitization of non-target species was a rare event. The generalist Anastatus bifasciatus was the predominant native parasitoid of H. halys, while the emergence of native scelionids from H. halys eggs was rarely observed. The presence of the hyperparasitoid Acroclisoides sinicus was also recorded. This study provided fundamental data that supported the development of the first inoculative release program of Tr. japonicus in Europe.

International audience; The North American oak lace bug feeds on leaves of 'white oaks" in its native range. In Europe, it was first discovered in northern Italy in 2000. In recent years, it has subsequently spread rapidly and population outbreaks have been observed in several European countries. In the present study, we summarize the steps of its expansion. To predict its potential host range, we checked 48 oak species in 20 sentinel gardens in seven countries between 2013 and 2018. In total, 27 oak species were recorded as suitable hosts; 13 of them are globally new ones, 23 out of the 29 in section Quercus (similar to white oaks, an intrageneric taxonomic unit within genus Quercus), including Asian oaks, native to Japan, Korea and China, and four out of five in section Cerris (another intrageneric unit of the same genus), were accepted as hosts. None of the species in section Lobatae (red oaks) or in the Ilex group was accepted. Host records were also collected in forest stands of 10 countries. We found 11 oak species that were infested. Outbreak populations were most commonly found on Quercus robur, Quercus frainetto, Quercus petraea and Quercus cerris, comprising widespread and outstandingly important oaks species in Europe. Based on our findings, we conclude that suitable hosts for oak lace bug are present in most of Europe and Asia. This means that a lack of hosts will likely not restrict further range expansion.

Halyomorphahalys(Stål) is a severe agricultural pest that is spreading worldwide from its original distribution in Asia. Egg parasitoids from Asia, which play a key role in the population dynamics ofH.halys, are following its host along global pathways. We present the first records ofTrissolcusmitsukuriiin Europe, and ofTrissolcusjaponicusin Italy. Both discoveries were made in northern Italy, whereH.halysis widely present and has reached extremely high population densities in some areas. Given the availability of their host, the distributions and populations of these exotic egg parasitoids are expected to expand, even in the absence of human intervention.

Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), native to East Asia, has become a globally invasive pest, as a serious threat to agricultural production and a notorious nuisance pest in urban areas. Considerable efforts have been made so far to develop effective pest control measures to prevent crop damage. Biological control of this invasive stink bug by egg parasitoids has proven to be the most environmentally sustainable long-term solution. Knowledge of the native egg parasitoid fauna is of key importance when implementing a biological control program. Therefore, the main objective of our study was to detect egg parasitoid species associated with H. halys in the Goriška region (Western Slovenia) and to evaluate their impact on the pest population under field conditions. In the years 2019 and 2020, around 4600 H. halys eggs were collected in the wild and more than 3400 sentinel eggs were exposed to detect parasitoids in the field. Five egg-parasitoid species emerged from H. halys eggs: Anastatus bifasciatus (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae), Telenomus sp., Trissolcus basalis, Trissolcus mitsukurii (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), all of them are new records for Slovenia. The native species, An. bifasciatus, dominated in urban and suburban areas, while non-native Tr. mitsukurii prevailed in agricultural areas. Overall parasitism rates of naturally laid eggs by the parasitoid species complex in 2019 and 2020 was 3.0 and 14.4%, respectively. Rapid recruitment of native parasitoids, early detection of an effective alien parasitoid species and increasing overall parasitism rates are very encouraging results, which need to be followed and verified in future research.

The spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), is one of the most destructive insects infesting spruce forests in Europe. Data concerning infestations of I. typographus occurring over the last 19 years (1994–2012) on the Southern Alps were analyzed in seven spruce forest types: (1) pure spruce plantations; (2) pure spruce reforestations; (3) pure spruce mountain forests; (4) pure spruce alpine forests; (5) spruce-conifer mixed forests; (6) spruce-broadleaf mixed forests; and (7) spruce-conifer-broadleaf mixed forests. The collected data included the amount of I. typographus damage and the location and composition of the infested forests. The results indicate that different forest types are differently susceptible to I. typographus. Plantations, reforestations and mountain spruce forests show mean damage and mean number of infestations higher than other forest types. Within pure spruce forests, alpine forests growing at high elevations (>1300 m) suffer low damage. Furthermore, the mean number of infestation spots recorded annually in the different spruce forest types is negatively correlated with a Naturality Index value. The results suggest that forest composition and elevation are the main factors driving the risk of I. typographus damage. A new management strategy for some spruce forest types is needed, with a progressive reduction of pure spruce forests at low altitude and an increase of broadleaf composition.

Pesticides are currently used inside hives, against the honeybee parasite Varroa destructor, producing unwanted contamination effects. To assess the distribution and fate of one of these pesticides (coumaphos), two experimental hives were treated with Perizin ( the commercial product containing the active ingredient coumaphos). Samples of honey, wax, pollen, adult bees and larvae taken before treatment and up to 104 days afterwards, showed diffuse contamination. Wood hedges and wax bridges, where the pesticide solution was applied, were analysed as well. A mass balance was calculated, yielding a recovered amount of around 60% just after treatment and 38% 1 month later. Directly contaminated surfaces and wax contained the highest amount of residues. Wax and honey contained different amounts ( 10, and 0.1% respectively) but both retained residues for long time. Bees ingest most of the product just after treatment, then rapidly eliminate it by metabolism, advection and deposition processes. On the basis of analytical results, a simple model ( level I of the fugacity model) was applied to the hive system for different pesticides ( coumaphos, malathion,. uvalinate and bromopropylate). Predicted concentrations in wax and honey were compared with those measured, indicating the good predictive capability of this approach.

A large amount of knowledge about honeybees exists and it is also rapidly increasing, converging from different scientific fields. Despite this availability, the integration of this knowledge for applied and research purposes is not quite easy. To overcome this problem, a model (ApiPop v. 2) for the simulation of the honeybee population dynamics and hive management has been developed. The model is formed by eight modules: AP-colony(honeybee colony dynamics); AP-cells(cell building and filling); AP-foraging(foraging activity in the field); AP-vegetation(vegetation distribution around the hive, as nectar and pollen source); AP-queen(queen egg laying and strength); AP-production(honey and pollen production); APvarroa(varroa biology and control); AP-beekeeping(hive management: super installing and removal, pollen collection, glucidic and proteic nutrition, queen insertion and supersedure, orphanization, elimination of queen cells, comb insertion and removal, chemical treatments against Varroa mite). The model ApiPop has been developed and is currently maintained by an Italian research group using the modeling framework SEMoLa

τ-Fluvalinate residues in bees, honey and wax were measured in two experimental hives treated with Apistan to test a multi-compartmental predictive model. Pesticide residues were monitored for 30 days after treatment in bees and for up to 180 days in honey and wax. Concentrations ranged between 14 and 160 ng g -1 f.w. in bees and between 98 and 1630 ng g -1 in wax, while no residues were detected above the analytical limit (2.5 ng g -1) in honey. τ-Fluvalinate residues are discussed in the context of a survey of data from the literature on other pesticides (bromopropylate, coumaphos, malathion and amitraz). This data review shows that residues of the same compound exhibit extremely high variability within the same matrix. This finding underlines the importance of developing predictive tools for both post-treatment analysis and a priori evaluation of the possible contamination effects of pesticides depending on the mode of application. © INRA, DIB-AGIB and Springer Science+Business Media B.V., 2011.

A new hive model is proposed for the assessment of the distribution and fate of pesticides in the hive ecosystem. Based on the chemical used, the model draws a dynamic picture of pesticide contamination in the hive, calculating contamination trends and concentration levels in the various hive components (e.g. bees, wax and honey). The proposed model is validated using empirical data on τ-fluvalinate residues in bees, wax and honey. It predicts with good approximation both the trends over time and the contamination levels of the pesticide in the various hive components. We have developed most of the parameters and equations used in this model. Although they will require further experimental testing, they provide realistic predictions that are consistent with the experimental data. The spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus, is one of the most extensively studied European forest pests. Gaps exist in the knowledge about second generation breeding performance in bivoltine populations. In this study, the breeding performance of the second generation was evaluated in three bivoltine populations of I. typographus in the SE Alps. Length of the maternal galleries (from 40.5 to 44.8 mm), population growth rate (PGR; from 0.7 to 3.6), and emerged adults per m2 (from 669 to 1,570 insects/m2) varied among populations and were negatively correlated with bark colonisation density. Pheromone traps set up in the three investigated forests differed in the number of trapped beetles, with mean captures ranging between 5,310 and 19,850 insects per trap. The populations giving the highest captures in the traps showed the lowest bark colonisation density (248 vs. 489 maternal galleries per m2) and the best breeding performance. The populations of parasitoids and predators corresponded to just 1–9 and 2–10% of the emerging I. typographus adults, respectively, and phloem temperature never reached thresholds lethal to I. typographus. Interspecific competition was negligible, whereas intraspecific competition was found to be the main factor affecting the breeding performance of the second generation, although with different intensity according to the colonisation density. It is hypothesised that competition with the first generation and spring precipitation influence the number of suitable hosts available to the second generation.

Since the 1990s, the leafminer Cameraria ohridella has spread in central and southern Europe causing heavy damage on horsechestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum). Because biological control of the pest is not yet a reality, other measures must be adopted. Cultural control by removing fallen leaves of horsechestnut in autumn has often been proposed, and with this 3-year study the effectiveness of this practice under urban conditions has been shown and measured. The almost complete removal of leaves caused a significant reduction in infestation. The area of leaf surface injured decreased on average by more than 90% in early June, three quarters in late July, and a third in late August, and early leaf fall was always avoided. The proximity to sites with no leaf removal reduced the benefits of leaf removal as the season advanced. In the context of Integrated Pest Management, this cultural method contributes significantly to reduce C. ohridella damage.

The susceptibility of four populations of Varroa destructorto the organophosphorous aca- ricide coumaphos was studied. The mites were taken from apiaries kept in Lombardy (northern Italy) and tested with a laboratory assay on paraffin wax with known concentrations of coumaphos. The sus- ceptibility of two populations to coumaphos was close to that of susceptible populations, indicated in the literature (LC 50 at 24 hours: 12.6 μg/g); a third population showed a significant, but slight increase in tolerance (LC 50 at 24 hours: 29 μg/g) while the fourth population had a much higher LC 50 (>200 μg/g at 24 hours). In subsequent field trials carried out in the apiary in which the latter population had been sampled, the total average efficacy of two treatments with Perizin ® (the com- mercial formulation of coumaphos) in colonies without capped brood was 46% (28-88%). coumaphos / Varroa destructor / resistance / bioassay / field trial
