Facial recognition technology has revolutionised human identification, providing a non-invasive alternative to traditional biometric methods like signatures and voice recognition. The integration of deep learning has significantly enhanced the accuracy and adaptability of these systems, now widely used in criminal identification, access control, and security. Initial research focused on recognising full-frontal facial features, but recent advancements have tackled the challenge of identifying partially visible faces, a scenario that often reduces recognition accuracy. This study aims to identify siblings based on facial features, particularly in cases where only partial features like eyes, nose, or mouth are visible. Utilising advanced deep learning models such as VGG19, VGG16, VGGFace, and FaceNet, the research introduces a framework to differentiate between sibling images effectively. To boost discrimination accuracy, the framework employs a linear fusion technique that merges insights from all the models used. The methodology involves preprocessing image pairs, extracting embeddings with pre-trained models, and integrating information through linear fusion. Evaluation metrics, including confusion matrix analysis, assess the framework's robustness and precision. Custom datasets of cropped sibling facial areas form the experimental basis, testing the models under various conditions like different facial poses and cropped regions. Model selection emphasises accuracy and extensive training on large datasets to ensure reliable performance in distinguishing subtle facial differences. Experimental results show that combining multiple models' outputs using linear fusion improves the accuracy and realism of sibling discrimination based on facial features. Findings indicate a minimum accuracy of 96% across different facial regions. Although this is slightly lower than the accuracy achieved by a single model like VGG16 with full-frontal poses, the fusion approach provides a more realistic outcome by incorporating insights from all four models. This underscores the potential of advanced deep learning techniques in enhancing facial recognition systems for practical applications.

Brain pathological changes linked with Alzheimer's disease (AD) can be measured with Neuroimaging. In the past few years, these measures are rapidly integrated into the signatures of Alzheimer disease (AD) with the help of classification frameworks which are offering tools for diagnosis and prognosis. Here is the review study of Alzheimer's disease based on Neuroimaging and cognitive impairment classification. This work is a systematic review for the published work in the field of AD especially the computer-aided diagnosis. The imaging modalities include 1) Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 2) Functional MRI (fMRI) 3) Diffusion tensor imaging 4) Positron emission tomography (PET) and 5) amyloid-PET. The study revealed that the classification criterion based on the features shows promising results to diagnose the disease and helps in clinical progression. The most widely used machine learning classifiers for AD diagnosis include Support Vector Machine, Bayesian Classifiers, Linear Discriminant Analysis, and K-Nearest Neighbor along with Deep learning. The study revealed that the deep learning techniques and support vector machine give higher accuracies in the identification of Alzheimer’s disease. The possible challenges along with future directions are also discussed in the paper.

Gait is a unique non-invasive biometric form that can be utilized to effectively recognize persons, even when they prove to be uncooperative. Computer-aided gait recognition systems usually use image sequences without considering covariates like clothing and possessions of carrier bags whilst on the move. Similarly, in gait recognition, there may exist unknown covariate conditions that may affect the training and testing conditions for a given individual. Consequently, common techniques for gait recognition and measurement require a degree of intervention leading to the introduction of unknown covariate conditions, and hence this significantly limits the practical use of the present gait recognition and analysis systems. To overcome these key issues, we propose a method of gait analysis accounting for both known and unknown covariate conditions. For this purpose, we propose two methods, i.e., a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based gait recognition and a discriminative features-based classification method for unknown covariate conditions. The first method can handle known covariate conditions efficiently while the second method focuses on identifying and selecting unique covariate invariant features from the gallery and probe sequences. The feature set utilized here includes Local Binary Patterns (LBP), Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), and Haralick texture features. Furthermore, we utilize the Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis for dimensionality reduction and selecting the most discriminant features. Three classifiers, namely Random Forest, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Multilayer Perceptron are used for gait recognition under strict unknown covariate conditions. We evaluated our results using CASIA and OUR-ISIR datasets for both clothing and speed variations. As a result, we report that on average we obtain an accuracy of 90.32% for the CASIA dataset with unknown covariates and similarly performed excellently on the ISIR dataset. Therefore, our proposed method outperforms existing methods for gait recognition under known and unknown covariate conditions.

Parkinson's disease is a neural degenerative disease. It slowly progresses from mild to severe stage, resulting in the degeneration of dopamine cells of neurons. Due to the deficiency of dopamine cells in the brain, it leads to a motor (tremor, slowness, impaired posture) and non-motor (speech, olfactory) defects in the body. Early detection of Parkinson's disease is a difficult chore as the symptoms of disease appear overtime. However, different diagnostic systems have contributed towards disease detection by considering gait, tremor and speech characteristics. Recent work has shown that speech impairments can be considered as a possible predictor for Parkinson's disease classification and remains an open research area. The speech signals show major differences and variations for Parkinson patients as compared to normal human beings. Therefore, variation in speech should be modeled using acoustic features to identify these variations. In this research, we propose three methodsthe first method employs a transfer learning-based approach using spectrograms of speech recordings, the second method evaluates deep features extracted from speech spectrograms using machine learning classifiers and the third method evaluates simple acoustic feature of recordings using machine learning classifiers. The proposed frameworks are evaluated on a Spanish dataset pc-Gita. The results show that the second framework shows promising results with deep features. The highest 99.7% accuracy on vowel \o\ and read text is observed using a multilayer perceptron. Whereas 99.1% accuracy observed on vowel \i\ deep features using random forest. The deep feature-based method performs better as compared to simple acoustic features and transfer learning approaches. The proposed methodology outperforms the existing techniques on the pc-Gita dataset for Parkinson's disease detection.

Melanoma is considered the most serious type of skin cancer. All over the world, the mortality rate is much high for melanoma in contrast with other cancer. There are various computer-aided solutions proposed to correctly identify melanoma cancer. However, the difficult visual appearance of the nevus makes it very difficult to design a reliable Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system for accurate melanoma detection. Existing systems either uses traditional machine learning models and focus on handpicked suitable features or uses deep learning-based methods that use complete images for feature learning. The automatic and most discriminative feature extraction for skin cancer remains an important research problem that can further be used to better deep learning training. Furthermore, the availability of the limited available images also creates a problem for deep learning models. From this line of research, we propose an intelligent Region of Interest (ROI) based system to identify and discriminate melanoma with nevus cancer by using the transfer learning approach. An improved k-mean algorithm is used to extract ROIs from the images. These ROI based approach helps to identify discriminative features as the images containing only melanoma cells are used to train system. We further use a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based transfer learning model with data augmentation for ROI images of DermIS and DermQuest datasets. The proposed system gives 97.9% and 97.4% accuracy for DermIS and DermQuest respectively. The proposed ROI based transfer learning approach outperforms existing methods that use complete images for classification.

In this paper, we report an effective cryptosystem aimed at securing the transmission of medical images in an Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT) environment. This contribution investigates the dynamics of a 2-D trigonometric map designed using some well-known maps: Logistic-sine-cosine maps. Stability analysis reveals that the map has an infinite number of solutions. Lyapunov exponent, bifurcation diagram, and phase portrait are used to demonstrate the complex dynamic of the map. The sequences of the map are utilized to construct a robust cryptosystem. First, three sets of key streams are generated from the newly designed trigonometric map and are used jointly with the image components (R, G, B) for hamming distance calculation. The output distance-vector, corresponding to each component, is then Bit-XORed with each of the key streams. The output is saved for further processing. The decomposed components are again Bit-XORed with key streams to produce an output, which is then fed into the conditional shift algorithm. The Mandelbrot Set is used as the input to the conditional shift algorithm so that the algorithm efficiently applies confusion operation (complete shuffling of pixels). The resultant shuffled vectors are then Bit-XORed (Diffusion) with the saved outputs from the early stage, and eventually, the image vectors are combined to produce the encrypted image. Performance analyses of the proposed cryptosystem indicate high security and can be effectively incorporated in an IoHT framework for secure medical image transmission.

Recommender systems are intelligent data mining applications that deal with the issue of information overload significantly. The available literature discusses several methodologies to generate recommendations and proposes different techniques in accordance with users' needs. The majority of the work in the recommender system domain focuses on increasing the recommendation accuracy by employing several proposed approaches where the main motive remains to maximize the accuracy of recommendations while ignoring other design objectives, such as a user's an item's context. The biggest challenge for a recommender system is to produce meaningful recommendations by using contextual user-item rating information. A context is a vast term that may consider various aspects; for example, a user's social circle, time, mood, location, weather, company, day type, an item's genre, location, and language. Typically, the rating behavior of users varies under different contexts. From this line of research, we have proposed a new algorithm, namely Kernel Context Recommender System, which is a flexible, fast, and accurate kernel mapping framework that recognizes the importance of context and incorporates the contextual information using kernel trick while making predictions. We have benchmarked our proposed algorithm with pre- and post-filtering approaches as they have been the favorite approaches in the literature to solve the context-aware recommendation problem. Our experiments reveal that considering the contextual information can increase the performance of a system and provide better, relevant, and meaningful results on various evaluation metrics.

Big data processing includes both data management and data analytics. The data management step requires efficient cleaning, knowledge extraction, and integration and aggregation methods, whereas Internet-of-Multimedia-Things (IoMT) analysis is based on knowledge modeling and interpretation, which is more often performed by exploiting deep learning architectures. In the past couple of years, merging conventional and deep learning methodologies has exhibited great promise in ingesting multimedia big data, exploring the paradigm of transfer learning, association rule mining, and predictive analytics etc.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. It gradually increases from mild stage to severe, affecting the ability to perform common daily tasks without assistance. It is a neurodegenerative illness, presently having no specified cure. Computer-Aided Diagnostic Systems have played an important role to help physicians to identify AD. However, the diagnosis of AD into its four stages; No Dementia, Very Mild Dementia, Mild Dementia, and Moderate Dementia remains an open research area. Deep learning assisted computer-aided solutions are proved to be more useful because of their high accuracy. However, the most common problem with deep learning architecture is that large training data is required. Furthermore, the samples should be evenly distributed among the classes to avoid the class imbalance problem. The publicly available dataset (OASIS) has serious class imbalance problem. In this research, we employed a transfer learning-based technique using data augmentation for 3D Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) views from OASIS dataset. The accuracy of the proposed model utilizing a single view of the brain MRI is 98.41% while using 3D-views is 95.11%. The proposed system outperformed the existing techniques for Alzheimer disease stages.

Abstract The huge amount of video data available these days requires effective management techniques for storage, indexing, and retrieval. Video summarization, a method to manage video data, provides concise versions of the videos for efficient browsing and retrieval. Key frame extraction is a form of video summarization which selects only the most salient frames from a given video. Since the automatic semantic understanding of the video contents is not possible so far, most of the existing works employ low level index features for extracting key frames. However, the usage of low level features results in loss of semantic details, thus leading to a semantic gap. In this context, the saliency-based user attention modeling technique can be used to bridge this semantic gap. In this paper, a key frame extraction scheme based on a visual attention mechanism is proposed. The proposed scheme builds static visual attention method based on multi-scale contrast instead of usual color contrast. The dynamic visual attention model is developed based on novel relative motion intensity and relative motion orientation. An efficient fusion scheme for combining three visual attention values is then proposed. A flexible technique is then used for key frame extraction. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed mechanism provides excellent results as compared to the some of the other prominent techniques in the literature.

Stock exchange analysis is regarded as a stochastic and demanding real-world setting in which fluctuations in stock prices are influenced by a wide range of aspects and events. In recent years, there has been a great deal of interest in social media-based data analytics for analyzing stock exchange markets. This is due to the fact that the sentiments around major global events like Brexit or COVID-19 significantly affect business decisions and investor perceptions, as well as transactional trading statistics and index values. Hence, in this research, we examined a case study from the Brexit event to assess the influence that feelings on the subject have had on the stock markets of European Union (EU) nations. Brexit has implications for Britain and other countries under the umbrella of the European Union (EU). However, a common point of debate is the EU’s contribution preferences and benefit imbalance. For this reason, the Brexit event and its impact on stock markets for major contributors and countries with minimum donations need to be evaluated accurately. As a result, to achieve accurate analysis of the stock exchanges of different EU nations from two different viewpoints, i.e., the major contributors and countries contributing least, in response to the Brexit event, we suggest an optimal deep learning and machine learning model that incorporates social media sentiment analysis regarding Brexit to perform stock market prediction. More precisely, the machine learning-based models include support vector machines (SVM) and linear regression (LR), while convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used as a deep learning model. In addition, this method incorporates around 1.82 million tweets regarding the major contributors and countries contributing least to the EU budget. The findings show that sentiment analysis of Brexit events using a deep learning model delivers better results in comparison with machine learning models, in terms of root mean square values (RMSE). The outcomes of stock exchange analysis for the least contributing nations in relation to the Brexit event can aid them in making stock market judgments that will eventually benefit their country and improve their poor economies. Likewise, the results of stock exchange analysis for major contributing nations can assist in lowering the possibility of loss in relation to investments, as well as helping them to make effective decisions.

In recent years, deep learning approaches have gained great attention due to their superior performance and the availability of high speed computing resources. These approaches are also extended towards the real time processing of multimedia content exploiting its spatial and temporal structure. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based video description framework which first extracts visual features from video frames using deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) and then pass the derived representations into a long-short term memory-based language model. In order to capture accurate information for human presence, a fine-tuned multi-task CNN is presented. The proposed pipeline is end-to-end, trainable, and capable of learning dense visual features along with an accurate framework for the generation of natural language descriptions of video streams. The evaluation is done by calculating Metric for Evaluation of Translation with Explicit ORdering and Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation (ROUGE) scores between system generated and human annotated video descriptions for a carefully designed data set. The video descriptions generated by the traditional feature learning and proposed deep learning frameworks are also compared through the ROUGE scores.

The recent advances in embedded processing have enabled the vision based systems to detect fire during surveillance using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, such methods generally need more computational time and memory, restricting its implementation in surveillance networks. In this research paper, we propose a cost-effective fire detection CNN architecture for surveillance videos. The model is inspired from GoogleNet architecture, considering its reasonable computational complexity and suitability for the intended problem compared to other computationally expensive networks such as AlexNet. To balance the efficiency and accuracy, the model is fine-tuned considering the nature of the target problem and fire data. Experimental results on benchmark fire datasets reveal the effectiveness of the proposed framework and validate its suitability for fire detection in CCTV surveillance systems compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Accurate identification of siblings through face recognition is a challenging task. This is predominantly because of the high degree of similarities among the faces of siblings. In this study, we investigate the use of state-of-the-art deep learning face recognition models to evaluate their capacity for discrimination between sibling faces using various similarity indices. The specific models examined for this purpose are FaceNet, VGGFace, VGG16, and VGG19. For each pair of images provided, the embeddings have been calculated using the chosen deep learning model. Five standard similarity measures, namely, cosine similarity, Euclidean distance, structured similarity, Manhattan distance, and Minkowski distance, are used to classify images looking for their identity on the threshold defined for each of the similarity measures. The accuracy, precision, and misclassification rate of each model are calculated using standard confusion matrices. Four different experimental datasets for full-frontal-face, eyes, nose, and forehead of sibling pairs are constructed using publicly available HQf subset of the SiblingDB database. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the chosen deep learning models to distinguish siblings based on the full-frontal-face and cropped face areas vary based on the face area compared. It is observed that VGGFace is best while comparing the full-frontal-face and eyes—the accuracy of classification being with more than 95% in this case. However, its accuracy degrades significantly when the noses are compared, while FaceNet provides the best result for classification based on the nose. Similarly, VGG16 and VGG19 are not the best models for classification using the eyes, but these models provide favorable results when foreheads are compared.

A typical growth of cells inside tissue is normally known as a nodular entity. Lung nodule segmentation from computed tomography (CT) images becomes crucial for early lung cancer diagnosis. An issue that pertains to the segmentation of lung nodules is homogenous modular variants. The resemblance among nodules as well as among neighboring regions is very challenging to deal with. Here, we propose an end-to-end U-Net-based segmentation framework named DA-Net for efficient lung nodule segmentation. This method extracts rich features by integrating compactly and densely linked rich convolutional blocks merged with Atrous convolutions blocks to broaden the view of filters without dropping loss and coverage data. We first extract the lung’s ROI images from the whole CT scan slices using standard image processing operations and k-means clustering. This reduces the search space of the model to only lungs where the nodules are present instead of the whole CT scan slice. The evaluation of the suggested model was performed through utilizing the LIDC-IDRI dataset. According to the results, we found that DA-Net showed good performance, achieving an 81% Dice score value and 71.6% IOU score.

Smart multimedia-based medical analytics and decision-making systems are of prime importance in the healthcare sector. Liver cancer is commonly stated to be the sixth most widely diagnosed cancer and requires an early diagnosis to help with treatment planning. Liver tumors have similar intensity levels and contrast as compared to neighboring tissues. Similarly, irregular tumor shapes are another major issue that depends on the cancer stage and tumor type. Generally, liver tumor segmentation comprises two steps: the first one involves liver identification, and the second stage involves tumor segmentation. This research work performed tumor segmentation directly from a CT scan, which tends to be more difficult and important. We propose an efficient algorithm that employs multi-scale parallel convolution blocks (MPCs) and Res blocks based on residual learning. The fundamental idea of utilizing multi-scale parallel convolutions of varying filter sizes in MPCs is to extract multi-scale features for different tumor sizes. Moreover, the utilization of residual connections and residual blocks helps to extract rich features with a reduced number of parameters. Moreover, the proposed work requires no post-processing techniques to refine the segmentation. The proposed work was evaluated using the 3DIRCADb dataset and achieved a Dice score of 77.15% and 93% accuracy.

Smart cities are a future reality for municipalities around the world. Healthcare services play a vital role in the transformation of traditional cities into smart cities. In this paper, we present a ubiquitous and quality computer-aided blood analysis service for the detection and counting of white blood cells (WBCs) in blood samples. WBCs also called leukocytes or leucocytes are the cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders. Analysis of leukocytes provides valuable information to medical specialists, helping them in diagnosing different important hematic diseases, such as AIDS and blood cancer (Leukaemia). However, this task is prone to errors and can be time-consuming. A mobile-cloud-assisted detection and classification of leukocytes from blood smear images can enhance accuracy and speed up the detection of WBCs. In this paper, we propose a smartphone-based cloud-assisted resource aware framework for localization of WBCs within microscopic blood smear images using a trained multi-class ensemble classification mechanism in the cloud. In the proposed framework, nucleus is first segmented, followed by extraction of texture, statistical, and wavelet features. Finally, the detected WBCs are categorized into five classes: basophil, eosinophil, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte. Experimental results on numerous benchmark databases validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed system in comparison to the other state-of-the-art schemes.

The rapid growth of GPS-enabled mobile devices has popularized many location-based applications. Spatial keyword search which finds objects of interest by considering both spatial locations and textual descriptions has become very useful in these applications. The recent integration of social data with spatial keyword search opens a new service horizon for users. Few previous studies have proposed methods to combine spatial keyword queries with social data in Euclidean space. However, most real-world applications constrain the distance between query location and data objects by a road network, where distance between two points is defined by the shortest connecting path. This paper proposes geo-social top-k keyword queries and geo-social skyline keyword queries on road networks. Both queries enrich traditional spatial keyword query semantics by incorporating social relevance component. We formalize the proposed query types and appropriate indexing frameworks and algorithms to efficiently process them. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approaches are evaluated using real datasets.

Being the most populous countries of South Asia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh together represent about 37% of the world total undernourished population. In the article, there are calculated the expenditure elasticities and the own and cross non-compensated price elasticities of main vegetable products of these countries by using the LA-AIDS model. There are used the elasticity estimates to decompose the recent demand fluctuations into price effect, income effect and population effect for each country. Then the ways for the government to improve the protein and energy intake after calculating the vegetable protein and calories elasticities are compared. Wheat and rice in these countries are relatively price inelastic. For these three countries, the population development (as well as the revenue for India and Bangladesh) appears to be the most important and regular cause of the augmentation of demand for vegetable products. A combination of income and price policies may be more effective in influencing the consumption pattern. The government should aim at improving the income level of most vulnerable consumers (low income group) in these countries.

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) has great advantages over traditional endoscopy because it is portable and easy to use, especially in remote monitoring health-services. However, during the WCE process, the large amount of captured video data demands a significant deal of computation to analyze and retrieve informative video frames. In order to facilitate efficient WCE data collection and browsing task, we present a resource- and bandwidth-aware WCE video summarization framework that extracts the representative keyframes of the WCE video contents by removing redundant and non-informative frames. For redundancy elimination, we use Jeffrey-divergence between color histograms and inter-frame Boolean series-based correlation of color channels. To remove non-informative frames, multi-fractal texture features are extracted to assist the classification using an ensemble-based classifier. Owing to the limited WCE resources, it is impossible for the WCE system to perform computationally intensive video summarization tasks. To resolve computational challenges, mobile-cloud architecture is incorporated, which provides resizable computing capacities by adaptively offloading video summarization tasks between the client and the cloud server. The qualitative and quantitative results are encouraging and show that the proposed framework saves information transmission cost and bandwidth, as well as the valuable time of data analysts in browsing remote sensing data.

Financial time series analysis is an important research area that can predict various economic indicators such as the foreign currency exchange rate. In this paper, a deep-learning-based model is proposed to forecast the foreign exchange rate. Since the currency market is volatile and susceptible to ongoing social and political events, the proposed model incorporates event sentiments to accurately predict the exchange rate. Moreover, as the currency market is heavily dependent upon highly volatile factors such as gold and crude oil prices, we considered these sensitive factors for exchange rate forecasting. The validity of the model is tested over three currency exchange rates, which are Pak Rupee to US dollar (PKR/USD), British pound sterling to US dollar (GBP/USD), and Hong Kong Dollar to US dollar (HKD/USD). The study also shows the importance of incorporating investor sentiment of local and foreign macro-level events for accurate forecasting of the exchange rate. We processed approximately 5.9 million tweets to extract major events’ sentiment. The results show that this deep-learning-based model is a better predictor of foreign currency exchange rate in comparison with statistical techniques normally employed for prediction. The results present evidence that the exchange rate of all the three countries is more exposed to events happening in the US.

Alzheimer’s disease effects human brain cells and results in dementia. The gradual deterioration of the brain cells results in disability of performing daily routine tasks. The treatment for this disease is still not mature enough. However, its early diagnosis may allow restraining the spread of disease. For early detection of Alzheimer’s through brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), an automated detection and classification system needs to be developed that can detect and classify the subject having dementia. These systems also need not only to classify dementia patients but to also identify the four progressing stages of dementia. The proposed system works on an efficient technique of utilizing transfer learning to classify the images by fine-tuning a pre-trained convolutional network, AlexNet. The architecture is trained and tested over the pre-processed segmented (Grey Matter, White Matter, and Cerebral Spinal Fluid) and un-segmented images for both binary and multi-class classification. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated over Open Access Series of Imaging Studies (OASIS) dataset. The algorithm showed promising results by giving the best overall accuracy of 92.85% for multi-class classification of un-segmented images.

Visual sensor networks (VSNs) usually generate a low-resolution (LR) frame-sequence due to energy and processing constraints. These LR-frames are not very appropriate for use in certain surveillance applications. It is very important to enhance the resolution of the captured LR-frames using resolution enhancement schemes. In this paper, an effective framework for a super-resolution (SR) scheme is proposed that enhances the resolution of LR key-frames extracted from frame-sequences captured by visual-sensors. In a VSN, a visual processing hub (VPH) collects a huge amount of visual data from camera sensors. In the proposed framework, at the VPH, key-frames are extracted using our recent key-frame extraction technique and are streamed to the base station (BS) after compression. A novel effective SR scheme is applied at BS to produce a high-resolution (HR) output from the received key-frames. The proposed SR scheme uses optimized orthogonal matching pursuit (OOMP) for sparse-representation recovery in SR. OOMP does better in terms of detecting true sparsity than orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP). This property of the OOMP helps produce a HR image which is closer to the original image. The K-SVD dictionary learning procedure is incorporated for dictionary learning. Batch-OMP improves the dictionary learning process by removing the limitation in handling a large set of observed signals. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and show its superiority over other state-of-the-art schemes.

Medical image collections contain a wealth of information which can assist radiologists and medical experts in diagnosis and disease detection for making well-informed decisions. However, this objective can only be realized if efficient access is provided to semantically relevant cases from the ever-growing medical image repositories. In this paper, we present an efficient method for representing medical images by incorporating visual saliency and deep features obtained from a fine-tuned convolutional neural network (CNN) pre-trained on natural images. Saliency detector is employed to automatically identify regions of interest like tumors, fractures, and calcified spots in images prior to feature extraction. Neuronal activation features termed as neural codes from different CNN layers are comprehensively studied to identify most appropriate features for representing radiographs. This study revealed that neural codes from the last fully connected layer of the fine-tuned CNN are found to be the most suitable for representing medical images. The neural codes extracted from the entire image and salient part of the image are fused to obtain the saliency-injected neural codes (SiNC) descriptor which is used for indexing and retrieval. Finally, locality sensitive hashing techniques are applied on the SiNC descriptor to acquire short binary codes for allowing efficient retrieval in large scale image collections. Comprehensive experimental evaluations on the radiology images dataset reveal that the proposed framework achieves high retrieval accuracy and efficiency for scalable image retrieval applications and compares favorably with existing approaches.

Online social networks are widely used platforms that enable people to connect with each other. These social media channels provide an active communication platform for people, and they have opened new venues of research for the academic world and business. One of these research areas is measuring the influential users in online social networks; and the same is true for academic networks where finding influential authors is an area of interest. In an academic network, citation count, h-index and their variations are used to find top authors. In this article, we propose the adoption of established social network measures, including centrality and prestige, in an academic network to compute the rank of authors. For the empirical analysis, the widely-used dataset of the Digital Bibliography and Library Project (DBLP) is exploited in this research, and the micro-level properties of the network formed in the DBLP co-authorship network are studied. Afterwards, the results are computed using social network measures and evaluated using the standard ranking performance evaluation measures, including Kendall correlation, Overlapping Similarlity (OSim) and Spearman rank-order correlation. The results reveal that the centrality measures are significantly correlated with the citation count and h-index. Consequently, social network measures have potential to be used in an academic network to rank the authors.

Governments these days are demanding better Smart City technologies in order to connect with citizens and understand their demands. For such governments, much needed information exists on social media where members belonging to diverse groups share different interests, post statuses, review and comment on various topics. Aspect extraction from this data can provide a thorough understanding of citizens’ behaviors and choices. Also, categorization of these aspects can better summarize societal concerns regarding political, economic, religious and social issues. Aspect category detection (ACD) from people reviews is one of the major tasks of aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA). The success of ABSA is mainly defined by the inexpensive and accurate machine-processable representation of the raw input sentences. Previous approaches rely on cumbersome feature extraction procedures from sentences, which adds its own complexity and inaccuracy in performing ACD tasks. In this paper, we propose an inexpensive and simple method to obtain the most suitable representation of a sentence-vector through different algebraic combinations of a sentence’s word vectors, which will act as an input to any machine learning classifier. We have tested our technique on the restaurant review data provided in SemEval-2015 and SemEval-2016. SemEval is a series of global challenges to evaluate the effectiveness of disambiguation of word sense. Our results showed the highest F1-scores of 76.40% in SemEval-2016 Task 5, and 94.99% in SemEval-2015 Task 12.

Flying ad-hoc networks (FANETs) are a very vibrant research area nowadays. They have many military and civil applications. Limited battery energy and the high mobility of micro unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) represent their two main problems, i.e., short flight time and inefficient routing. In this paper, we try to address both of these problems by means of efficient clustering. First, we adjust the transmission power of the UAVs by anticipating their operational requirements. Optimal transmission range will have minimum packet loss ratio (PLR) and better link quality, which ultimately save the energy consumed during communication. Second, we use a variant of the K-Means Density clustering algorithm for selection of cluster heads. Optimal cluster heads enhance the cluster lifetime and reduce the routing overhead. The proposed model outperforms the state of the art artificial intelligence techniques such as Ant Colony Optimization-based clustering algorithm and Grey Wolf Optimization-based clustering algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated in term of number of clusters, cluster building time, cluster lifetime and energy consumption.

In medical field visualization of the organs is very imperative for accurate diagnosis and treatment of any disease. Brain tumor diagnosis and surgery also required impressive 3D visualization of the brain to the radiologist. Detection and 3D reconstruction of brain tumors from MRI is a computationally time consuming and error-prone task. Proposed system detects and presents a 3D visualization model of the brain and tumor inside which greatly helps the radiologist to effectively diagnose and analyze the brain tumor. We proposed a multi-phase segmentation and visualization technique which overcomes the many problems of 3D volume segmentation methods like lake of fine details. In this system segmentation is done in three different phases which reduces the error chances. The system finds contours for skull, brain and tumor. These contours are stacked over and two novel methods are used to find the 3D visualization models. The results of these techniques, particularly of interpolation based, are impressive. Proposed system is tested against publically available data set [41] and MRI datasets available from MRI & CT center Rawalpindi, Pakistan [42].

Developing efficient and durable electrocatalysts for ethanol electro‐oxidation is crucial for enabling the application of direct ethanol fuel cell technology. Herein, it is demonstrated that Pt–Ga liquid metal‐based nanodroplets can serve as an efficient electrocatalyst to drive ethanol oxidation. The mass activity of Pt is significantly improved by alloying with liquid gallium. Guided by machine learning neural networks, a low‐concentration alkaline electrolyte is specifically formulated to allow electrodes with ultralow Pt loading to demonstrate remarkable activity toward ethanol oxidation with a mass activity as high as 13.47 A mg−1Pt, which is more than 14 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts (i.e., 0.76 A mg−1Pt). Computational studies reveal that the superior activity is associated with the presence of Ga oxides adjacent to Pt on the catalyst surface which leads to energetically favorable pathways for the oxidation process. The findings reveal untapped opportunities in the realm of liquid metal catalysis and hold great promise for the future development of high‐performance alcohol fuel cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
