Martynasa Mažvydasa i Biblioteki Litewskiej Akademii Nauk im.

The aim of the article is to describe the concept of dom ‘home’ in Wojciech Piotrowicz’s idiolect by using the methodological assumptions of Lublin ethnolinguistics school. Research on which this paper is based consists of two main parts: we present the writer’s biography, which introduces a representative of the Polish intelligentsia in Lithuania, and an analysis of the concept of dom ‘home’. The presented biography emphasizes the origin and formation of the personality of the recognized writer and social and cultural activist, whose life is an example of the formation of the Polish intelligentsia in Lithuania. The subject of research is a textual data coming from his volume of memoirs, which contains the writer’s memories and reflections. The analysis of the dom ‘home’ concept focuses on two profiles: physical and symbolic, specific features were grouped onto facets. In the conclusions, we underline the specific character of home in Wojciech Piotrowicz’s autobiographical prose which has some differences comparing to home described in Polish, Lithuanian and Belarusian languages by EUROJOS project.

In Vilnius that was considered as spiritual capital of Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the period of inter-war, and mainly in ’20s of the XX century still was very living romanticism tradition. The important person and symbolic messenger of this tradition was Adam Mickiewicz, the most famous polish-lithuanian poet, polish national prophet. Very noticeable was the fact that the best known literary scientists, like: J. Kallenbach, S. Pigoń, K. Górski were employed in Polish Literature Department, in Faculty of Humanities of Stefan Batory University. Wladysław Mickiewicz – son of the poet Adam Mickiewicz, also his biographer visited Vilnius and university in 1922. In 1926 was published collection of poems named Wiwlasy. Jamb na stulecie filomatów by Edward Walewski. It consists of 48 sonnets that describe the activity of „Filomaci and Filareci“ Society members. The lyrics refer also to people (J. Lelewel, K. Kontry, E. Groddeck), and places (Nowogródek, Tuhanowicz, Bolcienik) related to some meaningful locations connected with „Filomaci“ trial case. The other significant literary event was the attempt to issue due to efforts of some teachers K. Adamska-Roubina, S. Szemitówna-Cywińska and O. Zambrzycka-Swianiewiczowa, in Vilnius in 1929, the school newspaper „Filomatka“. Till our times only one archival copy is left, there is no evidence if there were more copies. It is necessary to mention that both literary events, despite their weak response, are interesting and worth mentioning examples of still alive tradition of „Filomaci“ in Vilnius.

Wojciech Piotrowicz (born in 1940) is a Vilnius poet, prose writer, translator, journalist, social and cultural activist. He is the author of several poetry collections and volumes of memoirs. Research on which this paper is based consists of two main parts: we present the writer’s biography, which introduces a representative of the Polish intelligentsia in Lithuania, and an analysis of his lexis from his collection of short stories Moja czasoprzestrzeń (My Space-Time) (2015). The aim of the research is to investigate the lexical layers in the idiolect of the writer. Piotrowicz’s idiolect is the domain where the erudite vocabulary of the standard language blends in with the dialectical vocabulary of the Švenčionys district, in which words of rural life are frequent. In the vocabulary of his idiolect, we distinguish the following groups of lexemes: words from family language, archaisms, dialect words, and postwar Russian borrowings, referred to as “Soviet words”. The multi-layer nature of Piotrowicz’s idiolect is a result of a complicated reality on the border between cultures, languages, times, and evidence of changes in social stratification. To summarize the research results, it can be stated that the analysis of 179 words (phrases) from the writer’s individual language shows a world of concepts, thoughts, and values that are characteristic of representatives of the intelligentsia of peasant origin, born in the 1940s. The authors of the paper consider that this study is only a contribution toward determining the peculiarities of the Polish language spoken by the intelligentsia in Lithuania in the 20th century, and that this article does not exhaust all issues of Wojciech Piotrowicz’s idiolect.

Irena Fedorovich Discussions on the Project of A. Mickiewicz’s Monument in Vilna in Press of 1925–1927 The first monument in honour of A. Mickiewicz in Vilna was a bust unveiled in the church of Saint Johns ’ in 1899. However, the Vilnius town-dwellers were willing to erect a monument in a public place. This topic stimulated lots of emotions, especially in the years 1925–1927. Readers of the daily newspapers “Word” (“Słowo”) and “Courier of Vilna” (“Kurier Wileński”) were divided into supporters and opponents of the project of the monument of A. Mickiewicz created by the sculptor S. Szukalski. He was the winner of the competition held in 1926. Under the pressure of public opinion that project was never materialized. Discussion on the monument to A. Mickiewicz in Vilna became a part of a typical Polish cultural discourse in the thirties on the topic of modern art and attitudes of the artists towards the romanticism tradition.

The article is devoted to the nine as-yet-unpublished letters by Władisław Syrokomla (Ludwik Kondratowicz, 1823–1862), kept at the Lithuanian State Historical Archive. Although some of the letters are undated, it can be assumed that they were written c. 1850–60. During that period Syrokomla lived at the Bareikiškės estate, 16 kilometers from Vilnius, and later moved to Vilnius, where he became well-known as a poet. Although this was one of his most-productive periods, both personally and professionally, he was unable to shield his large family from financial difficulties. The letters analyzed here show that despite having many debts, he attempted to help both his family members and acquaintances. The letters were addressed to four individuals: Syrokomla’s neighbor Władysław Fiorentin (4 letters), Ludwik Wrublewski (1), Rudolf Piesanka (3) and a certain Pavel (probably Kukolnik) (1). The letters to Wrublewski and Piesanka are business-related, the others are personal.

Pirmasis paminklas Adomui Mickevičiui Vilniuje buvo atidengtas 1899 m. šv. Jonų bažnyčioje. Tačiau miestiečiai norėjo pastatyti paminklą viešoje vietoje. Šis klausimas svarstytas labai emocingai, ypač 1925-1927 m. Laikraščių „Słowo“ bei „Kurier Wileński“ skaitytojai pasidalino į skulptoriaus S. Szukalskio sukurto paminklo A. Mickevičiui projekto šalininkus ir oponentus. S. Szukalskio projektas laimėjo konkursą, surengtą 1926 m. Dėl visuomenės pasipriešinimo šis projektas nebuvo įgyvendintas. Diskusijos dėl poeto paminklo Vilniuje buvo tipiškas lenkų kultūrinio diskurso (moderniojo meno ir romantizmo tradicijos tema) XX a. trečiajame dešimtmetyje pavyzdys. The first monument in honour of A. Mickiewicz in Vilna was a bust unveiled in the church of Saint Johns' in 1899.
