Paulo Freire defendia a educação para todos, a partir dos saberes individuais de cada educando, ao compreender que a pesquisa se faz a partir do conhecimento prévio e desse modo buscar novos saberes. Para a área das ciências naturais não é diferente, onde o campo das disciplinas de química está ancorado. O objetivo deste estudo foi praticar conceitos por meio de uma abordagem de aprendizagem significativa, junto aos alunos de um curso técnico, onde conceitos como qualidade do solo, impactos da contaminação antrópica na vegetação e biorremediadores foram abordados a partir de uma simulação, em laboratório, de uma contaminação de solo por chumbo, com a utilização de mudas da espécie Syngonium podophyllum. Ao trabalhar com os estudantes foi possível demonstrar o envolvimento e compreensão dos alunos a cerca destes conceitos propostos, de forma simples e objetiva, pela vivência do estudante com uma situação prática dentro de sua realidade.

ABSTRACT Introduction and objectives: Functional assessment of coronary stenosis severity with the piezo-electric sensor pressure wire has shown a discrepancy of up to 20% between hyperemic and nonhyperemic indexes. No data are available with fiber-optic pressure wires. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and factors related to the diagnostic discordance between these indexes with a fiber-optic pressure wire. Secondary aims were to assess diagnostic reproducibility in 2 consecutive measurements of fractional flow reserve (FFR) and diastolic pressure ratio (dPR) and evaluate the drift rate. Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational multicenter study in patients undergoing functional assessment with a fiber-optic pressure wire. We took 2 consecutive measurements of the dPR (cutoff point 0.89) and FFR (cut-off point 0.80) in each lesion analyzed. The diagnostic correlation between 2 measurements with the same technique and between the 2 techniques (dPR and FFR) was assessed. Clinical and angiographic factors associated with discordance (FFR−/dPR+ and FFR+/dPR−) between the 2 techniques were analyzed. Results: We included 428 cases of stenosis (361 patients). Diagnostic reproducibility was 95.8% for the dPR, with a correlation coefficient between the 2 measurements (dPR1 and dPR2) of 0.974 (P 60%. The drift rate was 5.7%. Conclusions: Although FFR and dPR measurements with a fiber-optic pressure wire have excellent reproducibility and a low drift rate, the discordance rate remains similar to those in previous studies with a piezo-electric pressure wire. FFR−/dPR+ discordance is associated with intracoronary adenosine and hypertension. FFR+/dPR− discordance is related to age < 75 years old and stenosis > 60%.

RESUMEN Introducción y objetivos: La valoración funcional de las estenosis coronarias con guías de presión de sensor piezoeléctrico ha mostrado hasta un 20% de discordancia entre los índices hiperémico y no hiperémico. No hay datos disponibles con guía de presión de sensor óptico. El objetivo del estudio es evaluar la incidencia y los factores relacionados con la discordancia diagnóstica entre estos índices con guía de presión de sensor óptico. Como objetivos secundarios se evaluó la reproducibilidad diagnóstica en dos determinaciones consecutivas de la reserva fraccional de flujo (RFF) y la diastolic pressure ratio (dPR). También se evaluó la tasa de drift. Métodos: Estudio observacional, prospectivo, multicéntrico, en pacientes a quienes se realiza una valoración funcional con guía de presión de sensor óptico. Se hicieron dos mediciones consecutivas de dPR (umbral 0,89) y RFF (umbral 0,80) en cada lesión analizada. Se valoró la correlación diagnóstica entre dos mediciones con la misma técnica y entre ambas técnicas (dPR y RFF). Se analizaron factores clínicos y angiográficos asociados a la discordancia (RFF−/dPR+ y RFF+/dPR−) entre ambas técnicas. Resultados: Se incluyeron 428 estenosis (361 pacientes). La reproducibilidad diagnóstica fue del 95,8% para dPR, con un coeficiente de correlación entre ambas mediciones (dPR1 y dPR2) de 0,974 (p < 0,0001). Para RFF la reproducibilidad diagnóstica fue del 94,9%, con un coeficiente de correlación (RFF1 y RFF2) de 0,942 (p < 0,0001). La discordancia diagnóstica fue del 18,2% (RFF+/dPR− 8,2% y RFF−/dPR+ 10%). Entre las variables analizadas, en el análisis multivariado, la hipertensión arterial y la administración intracoronaria de adenosina se asociaron de manera significativa con la discordancia RFF−/dPR+. Solo la edad < 75 años y la estenosis > 60% se asociaron de manera significativa con la discordancia RFF+/dPR−. La tasa de drift fue del 5,7%. Conclusiones: Aunque las mediciones de RFF y dPR con guía de presión de sensor óptico tienen una excelente reproducibilidad y una baja incidencia de drift, la tasa de discordancia permanece similar a la de estudios previos con guía de presión de sensor piezoeléctrico. La adenosina intracoronaria y la hipertensión arterial se asocian con la discordancia RFF−/dPR+. La edad < 75 años y la estenosis > 60% se asocian a discordancia RFF+/dPR−.

Electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) are energy storage devices based on the charging and discharging electrode-electrolyte interfaces of high surface area materials such as multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and activated carbon (AC). Despite the broad applicability, the final destination of these components is the environment, mainly water and soil, where they can represent impacts on organisms along different trophic levels. Bioassays with Raphidoceles subcapitata, are widely used to evaluate aquatic totoxicity and oligochaetes are good terrestrial bioindicators. The study aimed to evaluate aquatic and terrestrial toxicity of MWCNT from EDLC-type capacitors using bioindicators, R. subcapitata and Eisenia andrei. The MWCNT material was synthesized by the floating catalyst-based chemical vapor deposition method (FC-CVD) on stainless steel (AISI 304L). The MWCNT concentrations for the assays were 0.1 1.0, 10 and 100 mg.L–1 for the bioindicator R. subcapitata and the concentrations of 1, 10 and 100 mg.Kg–1 for bioindicator E. andrei. MWCNT inhibited the algal biomass in a concentration dependent manner at concentrations higher than 10 mg.L–1. In the soil the presence of MWCNT, at the concentrations tested did not cause mortality in the earthworm, but resulted in a significant mass reduction in the exposed organisms after 14 days. In the cytology analysis, it was not observed the production of micronuclei, but cytoplasmic vacuolization and nuclear atypia in coelomocytes were frequent. In the comet assay, there was a predominance of nucleoids in the stage 1 classification. Thus, no genotoxic effect was demonstrated in these organisms. The concentrations that showed toxic effects are within the range of environmentally expected concentrations. MWCNT are released from EDLC and may pose an occupational and environmental risk.

Sr. Editor: La canulación coronaria sigue siendo todo un desafío tras un implante percutáneo de válvula aórtica (TAVI). El alineamiento comisural de la prótesis valvular facilita la canulación coronaria, especialmente en prótesis autoexpandibles1. Además, para ciertos dispositivos, pueden hacerse necesarias diferentes técnicas de canulación coronaria si la prótesis valvular previamente implantada presenta un alineamiento comisural incorrecto2. Analizando las proyecciones de 3 cúspides y solapamiento de 2 cúspides izquierda a derecha (2 cúspides) tras el TAVI, es posible calcular el grado de alineamiento comisural de las prótesis valvulares con los postes comisurales identificables en la fluoroscopia3,4. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir las proyecciones óptimas para la canulación de la arteria coronaria izquierda (CI) y coronaria derecha (CD) en pacientes con TAVI previo. Se analizaron las imágenes tomográficas computarizadas pre-TAVI de 105 pacientes consecutivos derivados a nuestro centro para recibir un TAVI. Cinco casos fueron descartados por su mala calidad del estudio o por el reemplazo previo de la válvula aórtica. To the Editor, Coronary re-access continues to be a challenge following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Commissural alignment of the prosthesis facilitates coronary re-access, especially in self-expanding prostheses.1 Additionally, for certain devices, different techniques for coronary cannulation might be necessary if the previously implanted prosthesis has commissural misalignment.2 By analyzing 3-cusp and left-to-right 2-cusp overlap (2-cusp) projections after TAVI, it is possible to estimate the degree of commissural alignment in prostheses with identifiable commissural posts on fluoroscopy.3,4 This study aimed to describe the optimal projections for left and right coronary artery (LCA, RCA) cannulation in patients with previous TAVI. We analyzed the pre-TAVI computed tomography scans of 105 consecutive patients referred to our center for TAVI implantation. Of these scans, 5 were excluded due to their poor quality or previous aortic valve replacement. The ideal projections for LCA and RCA catheterization were identified by using 3mensio software (Pie Medical Imaging, The Netherlands) and were defined as projections coplanar with the cross-sectional transverse plane of the aorta at the level of each coronary ostium and orthogonal to them, respectively. An en-face projection to the aortic annulus can be established intraprocedurally as a projection where the prosthesis is foreshortened, usually in a cranial (CRA)...

This article contributes to the scarcity of research on the interface between task-modality and the use of previously known languages (PKL) in young learners. It examines the use of Basque/Spanish by CLIL learners (aged 10-11) during oral interaction while completing two collaborative tasks in English: a speaking task and a speaking + writing task. Findings indicate that these learners are extensive users of their PKL. Task-modality is particularly evident in the case of amount of PKL use, as a higher number of PKL turns are obtained in the speaking + writing task. However, task-modality has a limited effect on the functions of PKL, which contrasts with previous studies with adults. Despite the extensive use of their PKL, these young and low-proficient learners employ them as cognitive tools that facilitate the organization of the tasks, the co-construction of meaning and the attention to formal aspects of language such as mechanics.

Abstract Background Prevalence of musculoskeletal pain is high among eldercare workers, and therapeutic exercise has shown to be effective for its management. Although telerehabilitation is an increasingly used alternative for delivering therapeutic exercise, no studies have assessed synchronous group telerehabilitation interventions for the management of musculoskeletal disorders. Thus, the aim of this article is to describe the protocol of a randomized controlled trial that will assess the effects of a videoconference-based group therapeutic exercise intervention on the musculoskeletal pain of eldercare workers. Methods This multicenter trial will randomly assign 130 eldercare workers to either a control or experimental group. Participants in the control group will not receive any intervention, and participants in the experimental group will take part in a 12-week remote supervised videoconference-based intervention, consisting of 2 weekly 45-min group sessions. Each session will include 4 sets of 6 progressive resistance exercises for the lower limbs, upper limbs and trunk, performed with bodyweight and elastic bands at moderate-high intensity. Following the 12 weeks, participants in the experimental group will be provided with material for autonomously carry on the therapeutic exercises and advised to continue performing 2 weekly sessions on their own until a 48-week follow-up. Assessments will be performed at baseline, 12 and 48 weeks. Primary outcome will be average pain intensity in the low back during the last 7 days, measured by the 0–10 Numerical Rating Scale. Secondary outcomes will include additional measures of musculoskeletal pain, psycho-affective state, work-related variables, and physical fitness. Discussion This will be the first trial, to our knowledge, assessing whether a remote delivery of a group therapeutic exercise intervention via videoconference is effective for reducing the musculoskeletal pain, improving the psycho-affective state and physical fitness, and enhancing the work-related parameters in eldercare workers. If successful, this study will provide innovative tools for implementing effective, scalable and affordable interventions to tackle musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. It will also highlight the utility of telehealth, and address the importance of therapeutic exercise to manage musculoskeletal pain in a critical population for the future of the aging societies as it is the eldercare workers. Abstract Aim To analyse the impact of an intervention combining ageing education with clinical practice in nursing homes on a nursing cohort's negative stereotypes and prejudices towards ageing. Design A prospective cohort study was conducted in September 2019–October 2020 in a population of health sciences students (n = 222). Methods Questionnaire of Negative Stereotypes towards Aging (CENVE) and Aging Semantic Differential (DSE) were used to examine negative stereotypes and prejudices towards ageing in the nursing cohort exposed to the ageing education and practice intervention compared to a medical cohort that received no intervention. Group‐by‐time interaction, controlled by sex and age, for the effect of the intervention on CENVE and DSE scores was determined by mixed‐design ANOVA. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of a multicomponent exercise programme on perceived health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and depressive symptomatology in older people living in a long-term nursing home (LTNH). Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted. Forty-one older people were conveniently selected from the largest LTNH in the Basque Country. The participants were assigned to either an intervention group (n = 21) or a control group (n = 20). The intervention group participated in 50-min moderate intensity multicomponent physical exercise sessions (strength and balance, three sessions a week for 3 months). The control group participants continued their usual activities in the LTNH. Assessments were completed at baseline and reassessed after the 12-week intervention by the same nurse researchers who filled out the questionnaires: the 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Results: Thirty-eight participants completed the study (19 participants in each group). In the SF-36 parameters, physical functioning increase in the intervention group tends with a mean increase of 11.06 units (a 17.2% increase over the pre). The objective of this longitudinal study was to analyze changes in physical activity, sedentary time, sleep, anxiety, mood, and perceived health as a result of COVID-19 pandemic in a cohort of Spanish university students, both during the home confinement and one year after. Additionally, we analyzed the associations between physical activity, sedentary time, and other measured parameters. Data were collected through two online questionnaires that included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and self-reported anxiety, mood, and perceived health levels before, during and one year after home confinement. Participants reported decreased physical activity, increased sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep quality and perceived health during confinement. Most parameters had improved one year later; however, the participants still reported less physical activity, more sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep quality and perceived health compared to before confinement. Men reported greater reduction of physical activity during home confinement than women. In contrast, women reported reduced physical activity one year after confinement, whereas men reported increased activity. Participants reported higher anxiety and worse mood both during and one year post-confinement compared to pre-confinement, with women reporting higher levels of anxiety than men. Sports science students were closer to regaining pre-pandemic levels of physical activity one year post-confinement than students in other disciplines. Sleep, anxiety, and mood were worse among students with obesity compared to students in other BMI categories. Overall, increased physical activity and decreased sedentary time were associated with less anxiety and better sleep, mood, and perceived health during and one year post-confinement. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, anxiety, mood, and perceived health were disrupted one year after home confinement. Higher levels of physical activity and lower sedentary time were associated with preserved sleep and mental health during the pandemic.

Introduction Dementia conditions the patient’s nutrition from the beginning and vice versa. Generating difficulties for feeding (FEDIF) will influence its evolution. There are currently few nutritional longitudinal studies in people with dementia. Most focus on problems already established. The Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia (EdFED) Scale identifies FEDIF of patients with dementia by studying their behaviours while eating or being fed. It also indicates areas of potential clinical interventions.Methods and analysis Prospective multicentre observational study carried out in nursing homes, Alzheimer’s day care centres and primary healthcare centres. The study population will be dyads composed by the patient (diagnosed of dementia, over 65 years of age and who have feeding difficulties) and their family caregiver. Sociodemographic variables and nutritional status (body mass index, Mini Nutritional Assessment, blood test and calf and arm circumference) will be assessed. The Spanish version of the EdFED Scale will be completed and the presence of nursing diagnoses related to feeding behaviours will be collected. Follow-up will take place for 18 months.Ethics and dissemination All data will be carried out respecting European legislation 2016/679 in data protection, and the Spanish ‘Organic Law 3/2018 of December 2005’. The clinical data will be kept segregated and encrypted. The informed consent has been obtained. The research has been authorised by the Costa del Sol Health Care District on 27 February 2020 and the Ethics Committee on 2 March 2021. It has obtained funding from the Junta de Andalucía on 15 February 2021. Findings of the study will be presented at provincial, national and international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Abstract Purpose To ascertain whether physical activity (PA) is associated with better sperm quality in sperm donors. Methods A prospective case–control study was designed in an IVF center setting. A total of 207 sperm donation candidates from a relatively small geographical area were included in the study with no intervention. Donor candidates were subjected to conventional sperm analysis according to WHO criteria. Moreover, they answered a standardized questionnaire regarding their last week PA (IPAQ), with PA expressed in metabolic equivalents (METs)-min/week. Donors were classified into 4 groups: low, moderate, high and very high PA. Specific sports were included in the questionnaire. Semen samples from 43 accepted donors were used in artificial insemination by donor (AID) and IVF. The fertilization rates (FR) and pregnancy rates (PR) were studied. Results Semen volume, sperm concentration, progressive spermatozoa, non-progressive spermatozoa, total motile progressive spermatozoa and sperm morphology were similar in the four PA groups. No correlation between various semen parameters studied and METs was found. Running or cycling > 1 h/week did not influence sperm parameters. The AID PR was similar in the different PA groups. However, in IVF the mean donor FR was significantly higher in the high PA group and in the very high PA group. Conclusions No detrimental effect was associated with PA, or even very high PA, regarding conventional sperm parameters. Moreover, a better FR was associated with high and very high PA in IVF cycles, which merits more studies.
