Nymphs in the Odyssey mediate between maritime and terrestrial perspectives, aiding the integration of the newly arrived in a foreign and alien country and that of Odysseus into Ithaca. Nymphs are particularly evocative of the experience of first encounters with new lands, conforming to an historical maritime perspective of hinterlands observed from a boat or the coast. The article discusses the general mediating function of Nymphs. It reveals the importance of points of contact associated with the Odyssey Nymphs (inland perspective : springs ; maritime perspective : sea-caves) and looks at the concept of «empty place.» It traces the movement from «Nymph to Nymph» (Calypso to Penelope) and Odysseus's re-integration into Ithaca. The Nymphs of the Odyssey provide an authentic mental perspective for the way Greeks envisaged initial contacts and how they articulated the notion of «places» they arrived at, before such places acquired either a territorial conceptualization, a name, or an ethnic definition. For the history of Greek religion an important «mediating» aspect of Nymphs is brought to the foreground ; in terms of Greek social and colonial history a mental, «proto-colonial» viewpoint and attitude may be revealed., L'Odyssée et les Nymphes Les Nymphes jouent dans l'Odyssée le rôle d'intermédiaires entre les domaines maritime et terrestre, facilitant l'intégration d'Ulysse dans des pays étrangers aussi bien que son retour à Ithaque. Elles témoignent en particulier de l'expérience des premiers immigrants en contact avec des terres nouvelles, en accord avec une perspective sur l'arrière-pays observé depuis un navire ou depuis la côte. L'article discute la fonction médiatrice des Nymphes, mettant en évidence l'importance des points de contact associés avec elles dans l'Odyssée (dans une perspective terrestre par les sources, dans une perspective maritime par les grottes côtières) et examinant le concept d'« espace libre » (empty place). Il suit le mouvement d'une Nymphe à une autre, de Calypso à Pénélope, et la réintégration progressive à Ithaque. Les Nymphes de l'Odyssée donnent accès à l'analyse des représentations que pouvaient avoir les Grecs sur les contacts avec les populations parmi lesquelles ils arrivaient et sur l'espace dans lequel ils s'installaient, avant même que ces lieux aient reçu un nom, une définition ethnique et une représentation conceptualisée.
