1. Evaluation of renal values during treatment for heartworm disease in 27 client-owned dogs

Abstract

Abstract Background Canine heartworm disease (CHD) caused by Dirofilaria immitis remains a common preventable disease with increasing incidence in some parts of the USA. The treatment guidelines of the American Heartworm Society (AHS) currently recommend monthly macrocyclic lactone administration, 28 days of doxycycline given orally every 12 h and three injections of melarsomine dihydrochloride (1 injection on day 2 of treatment followed 30 days later by 2 injections 24 h apart). Minocycline has also been utilized when doxycycline is unavailable. The systemic effects of CHD, which particularly impact cardiac and renal function, have been described, with infected dogs often experiencing renal damage characterized by an increase in serum concentrations of renal biomarkers. Although the AHS treatment protocol for CHD has been shown to be safe and effective in most cases, the potential for complications remains. No study as of yet has evaluated changes in symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), a sensitive marker of renal function, during treatment for CHD. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate renal function in dogs by measuring serum creatinine and SDMA concentrations during the adulticide treatment period. Methods Serum creatinine and SDMA concentrations were measured in 27 client-owned dogs affected by CHD at the following time points: prior to starting doxycycline or minocycline therapy (baseline), during doxycycline or minocycline therapy (interim), at the time of the first dose of melarsomine (first dose), at the time of the second dose of melarsomine (second dose) and at the dog’s follow-up visit after treatment, occurring between 1 and 6 months after completion of therapy (post-treatment). Concentrations of creatinine and SDMA were compared between time points using a mixed effects linear model. Results Mean SDMA concentrations following the second dose of melarsomine were significantly lower (−1.80 ug/dL, t-test, df = 99.067, t = −2.694, P-Value = 0.00829) than baseline concentrations. There were no other statistically significant differences in the concentration of either biomarker between the baseline and the other time points in CHD dogs undergoing treatment. Conclusions The results suggest that the current AHS protocol may not have a substantial impact on renal function. Graphical Abstract

Abstract

Complex novel tasks are often used in animal cognition research to allow discrimination between various learning mechanisms. Successful performance relies on the capacity to identify informational cues from features in the environment. Additionally, observational learning is often considered more beneficial for survival than individual learning. Despite the importance of controlling task complexity, it can often be challenging to operationalize. This study investigated whether jackdaws, a highly social corvid species, can learn to drop stones inside a tube to release a reward after observing a trained conspecific. Additionally, it aimed to identify the underlying learning mechanisms and to detect the informational cues triggering learning. A research design was developed to highlight different aspects of the required action sequence. Experimental conditions included a conspecific model demonstrating the full sequence, parts of the sequence, consuming the reward without solving the task, and consuming the reward after the solution was demonstrated without a visible model. None of the 12 naïve jackdaws solved the task in pretests. Two subjects started solving in test sessions and they developed modified versions of the demonstrated action. Observing the full action sequence performed by a conspecific seemed to trigger learning. The majority of the subjects exhibited changes in their stone-oriented behavior, most likely due to stimulus and/or local enhancement. As predicted, jackdaws were influenced by conspecific model demonstrations when manipulating a complex novel foraging task. Factors contributing to the apparent task difficulty and directions for future studies are discussed within a tri-dimensional framework including the task, setup, and individuals.

Abstract

The liver X receptors LXRα and LXRβ play critical roles in maintaining lipid homeostasis by functioning as transcription factors that regulate genetic networks controlling the transport, catabolism, and excretion of cholesterol. The studies described in this report examine the individual anti-atherogenic activity of LXRα and LXRβ and determine the ability of each subtype to mediate the biological response to LXR agonists. Utilizing individual knockouts of LXRα and LXRβ in the Ldlr−/− background, we demonstrate that LXRα has a dominant role in limiting atherosclerosis in vivo. Functional studies in macrophages indicate that LXRα is required for a robust response to LXR ligands, whereas LXRβ functions more strongly as a repressor. Furthermore, selective knockout of LXRα in hematopoietic cells and rescue experiments indicate that the anti-atherogenic activity of this LXR subtype is not restricted to macrophages. These studies indicate that LXRα plays a selective role in limiting atherosclerosis in response to hyperlipidemia.

10. The Prime Time Project: Developing an Intensive Community-Based Intervention for Youth in the Juvenile Justice System.

Abstract

This paper describes the Prime Time Project, a Washington-based project which is a comprehensive intervention model for youths who are at the extreme end of the juvenile justice continuum due to their history of repeat offending, relatively severe offenses, a high degree of isolation or abandonment from their natural community, and the co-occurrence of mental health disorder. The project makes contact with youth and their families while the youth are detained and then follows them into the community upon release. Project staff have developed close collaborative relationships with juvenile court judges, probation and parole officers, local police officials, and teachers and administrators. Prime Time Project activities include: (1) structured half-day and evening activities located in a local community center; (2) vocational training, including two or more days each week involved in hands-on job skills training; (3) one or two days per week in training modules targeting areas such as social skills, affect management, interpersonal problem-solving, and drug and alcohol abuse; and (4) one evening per week, youth and a parent attend a group meeting. Abstract

Comparing oneself to others is a key process in humans that allows individuals to gauge their performances and abilities and thus develop and calibrate their self-image. Very little is known about its evolutionary foundations. A key feature of social comparison is the sensitivity to other individuals’ performance. Recent studies on primates produced equivocal results, leading us to distinguish a ‘strong’ variant of the social comparison hypothesis formulated for humans from a ‘weak’ variant found in non-human primates. Here, we focus on animals that are distantly related to primates but renowned for their socio-cognitive skills, birds from the family Corvidae. We were interested in whether crows’ task performances were influenced i) by the presence of a conspecific co-actor performing the same discrimination task and ii) by the simulated acoustic cues of a putative co-actor performing better or worse than themselves. Crows reached a learning criterion quicker when tested simultaneously as compared to when tested alone, indicating a facilitating effect of social context. The performance of a putative co-actor influenced their performance: crows were better at discriminating familiar images when their co-actor was better than they were. Standard extremity, i.e., how pronounced the difference was between the performance of the subject and that of the co-actor, and category membership (i.e., affiliation status and sex), of the putative co-actors had no effect on their performance. Our findings are in line with the ‘weak’ variant of social comparison and indicate that elements of human social comparison can be found outside of primates.

Abstract

Peptides derived from pre-proglucagon (GCG peptides) act in both the periphery and the CNS to change food intake, glucose homeostasis, and metabolic rate while playing a role in anxiety behaviors and physiological responses to stress. Although the actions of GCG peptides produced in the gut and pancreas are well described, the role of glutamatergic GGC peptide-secreting hindbrain neurons in regulating metabolic homeostasis has not been investigated. Here, we have shown that chemogenetic stimulation of GCG-producing neurons reduces metabolic rate and food intake in fed and fasted states and suppresses glucose production without an effect on glucose uptake. Stimulation of GCG neurons had no effect on corticosterone secretion, body weight, or conditioned taste aversion. In the diet-induced obese state, the effects of GCG neuronal stimulation on gluconeogenesis were lost, while the food intake-lowering effects remained, resulting in reductions in body weight and adiposity. Our work suggests that GCG peptide-expressing neurons can alter feeding, metabolic rate, and glucose production independent of their effects on hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation, aversive conditioning, or insulin secretion. Abstract

This comparative research aims to investigate 6- to 10-year-old students’ access to information and communication technologies (ICTs), their purposes of using these technologies, and their place in distance education in Turkey. To achieve this aim, the level of students’ access to ICT was determined from an interregional and between-countries perspective by reviewing the relevant literature. The document analysis method was used to analyze the contents of the materials in the corpus. Besides, the research study was built on the statistical data published by the OECD, the Turkish Statistical Institute, and the Ministry of National Education, published official documents, news, and other literature materials related to the subject. In the 2019–2020 academic year, 7,383,213 students at public schools of the Ministry of National Education actively used the Education and Informatics Network (EBA) system. Given 5,328,391 students in primary schools only, around 3.6 million students did not have regular access to the EBA system. All the tiers considered, a total of 11 million students could not access the EBA system. To enable the wider student masses to actively use distance education platforms, the online learning environments must be accessible to everyone and usable without any problems.

Abstract

Enterprise risk management (ERM) is a crucial aspect of corporate operations. This study examines the impact of environmental uncertainty, industry competition, and firm complexity on Enterprise Risk Management implementation and firm performance in the Southeast Asian mining industry. Utilizing data from 205 mining companies listed on Southeast Asian stock exchanges from 2016 to 2022, the analysis employs panel data regression methods. The findings reveal that environmental uncertainty does not significantly affect ERM, while industry competition positively influences ERM but negatively impacts firm performance. Firm complexity positively affects both ERM and performance. ERM mediates the relationships between industry competition, firm complexity, and performance, while intellectual capital moderates the effect of ERM on performance. These results underscore the strategic importance of integrating ERM practices and developing intellectual capital to enhance firm performance amidst competitive and complex business environments. The study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the nuanced relationships between these variables in the context of the Southeast Asian mining sector and offers practical insights for policymakers and industry leaders.
