Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows two parties to establish a shared secret key that is secure against adversaries with unlimited computational power. One such protocol named B92 is quite appealing due to its simplicity but is highly sensitive to channel noise. In this work, we investigate a high-dimensional variant of an extended version of the B92 protocol and show that it can distill a key over high noise channels. The protocol we consider requires that Alice sends only three high-dimensional states and Bob only performs partial measurements. We perform an information-theoretic security analysis of our protocol and compare its key rate to that of a high-dimensional BB84 protocol over depolarization and amplitude damping channels. An innovative multilevel inverter (MLI) relying on switched capacitor (SC) architecture is suggested for single-phase inverters with 13-levels. This suggested SCMLI is expected to be capable of generating output AC voltages at appropriate levels while utilizing fewer switches. The suggested inverter utilizes two count of capacitors, two asymmetrical dc sources, two diodes, and 11 switches. As fewer switches are needed, fewer gate drivers are also needed, increasing the converter's power density. The challenge of preserving self-voltage balance across the capacitors in an SC-MLI circuit is yet another task. Additionally, when the modulation index is low, self-voltage preservation is subpar. It is possible to maintain the self-voltage balance with the capacitors connected in this suggested SC-MLI avoiding the requirement of any ancillary devices or challenging control schemes. Regardless of the modulation index values, capacitors operate at self-balanced levels in all regions of the spectrum. The suggested SC-MLI has a strong ability to achieve good power quality and can balance capacitor voltages even at low modulation indices. The suggested SC-MLI is first modelled using different loading conditions in the MATLAB/Simulink® platform, and subsequently it is validated with the help of typhoon-HIL real-time emulator. Using the simulation tool PLEXIM-PLECS, the suggested inverter's overall switching losses and efficiency are estimated and found out to be 95.87%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Semi-quantum communication, a model introduced by Boyer et al. (Phys Rev Lett 99:140501, 2007), involves the use of fully quantum users and semi-quantum, or "classical" users. These restricted users are only allowed to interact with the quantum channel in a limited manner. Originally introduced to study the key-distribution problem, semi-quantum research has since expanded, and continues to grow, with new protocols, security proof methods, experimental implementations, and new cryptographic applications beyond key distribution. Research in the field of semi-quantum cryptography requires new insights into working with restricted protocols and, so, the tools and techniques derived in this field can translate to results in broader quantum information science. Furthermore, other questions such as the connection between quantum and classical processing, including how classical information processing can be used to counteract a quantum deficiency in a protocol, can shed light on important theoretical questions. This work surveys the history and current state of the art in semi-quantum research. We discuss the model and several protocols offering the reader insight into how protocols are constructed in this realm. We discuss security proof methods and how classical post-processing can be used to counteract users' inability to perform certain quantum operations. Moving beyond key distribution, we survey current work in other semi-quantum cryptographic protocols and current trends. We also survey recent work done in attempting to construct practical semi-quantum systems including recent experimental results in this field. Finally, as this is still a growing field, we highlight, throughout this survey, several open problems that we feel are important to investigate in the hopes that this will spur even more research in this topic. Background: Metabolic bariatric surgery tourism continues to rise and has become a growing concern for bariatric surgeons globally. With varying degrees of regulation, counselling and success, those that develop complications may have to deal with a multitude of challenges often distant from their country of operation. The aim of this study was to characterize the barriers and facilitators influencing individuals to undergo metabolic bariatric surgery tourism, in order to better understand the implications to the National Health Service and other healthcare systems. Methods: A systematic literature search, restricted to the English language, was performed to identify relevant studies. All studies were included until December 2022, the last search date. Study quality was assessed with the validated mixed-methods appraisal tool. A Braun and Clarke thematic analysis was undertaken to identify themes and subthemes. Results: A total of five studies met the inclusion criteria. Identified themes included: availability, accessibility, cost, eligibility, reputation, and stigma; the available evidence was of varying quality. Conclusion: This work identifies a series of subthemes influencing the decision to undertake metabolic bariatric surgery tourism. The results highlight the limited literature available in understanding the complex motivational insights; the scale of the problem in the current healthcare system; cost and long-term outcomes. A National Emergency Bariatric Surgery audit would allow generation of more robust data to explore further the issues of clinical relationships and networks and to guide policy making. Bariatric tourism (BT) continues to rise and has become a growing concern for bariatric surgeons globally. The aim of this study was to characterize the barriers and facilitators influencing individuals to undergo BT in order to better understand the implications to the NHS. This work identifies a series of subthemes that influence the decision to undertake BT and highlights the limited literature available in understanding the complex motivational insights; the scale of the problem in the current healthcare system; cost and long-term outcomes. 6. Reduced Functional Measure of Cardiovascular Reserve Predicts Admission to Critical Care Unit following Kidney Transplantation

Background: There is currently no effective preoperative assessment for patients undergoing kidney transplantation that is able to identify those at high perioperative risk requiring admission to critical care unit (CCU). We sought to determine if functional measures of cardiovascular reserve, in particular the anaerobic threshold (VO2AT) could identify these patients. Methods: Adult patients were assessed within 4 weeks prior to kidney transplantation in a University hospital with a 37-bed CCU, between April 2010 and June 2012. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), echocardiography and arterial applanation tonometry were performed. Results: There were 70 participants (age 41.7±14.5 years, 60% male, 91.4% living donor kidney recipients, 23.4% were desensitized). 14 patients (20%) required escalation of care from the ward to CCU following transplantation. Reduced anaerobic threshold (VO2AT) was the most significant predictor, independently (OR = 0.43; 95% CI 0.27–0.68; p<0.001) and in the multivariate logistic regression analysis (adjusted OR = 0.26; 95% CI 0.12–0.59; p = 0.001). The area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve was 0.93, based on a risk prediction model that incorporated VO2AT, body mass index and desensitization status. Neither echocardiographic nor measures of aortic compliance were significantly associated with CCU admission. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first prospective observational study to demonstrate the usefulness of CPET as a preoperative risk stratification tool for patients undergoing kidney transplantation. The study suggests that VO2AT has the potential to predict perioperative morbidity in kidney transplant recipients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Motivation Metabolomics is a data analysis and interpretation field aiming to study functions of small molecules within the organism. Consequently Metabolomics requires researchers in life sciences to be comfortable in downloading, installing and scripting of software that are mostly not user friendly and lack basic GUIs. As the researchers struggle with these skills, there is a dire need to develop software packages that can automatically install software pipelines truly speeding up the learning curve to build software workstations. Therefore, this paper aims to provide MetumpX, a software package that eases in the installation of 103 software by automatically resolving their individual dependencies and also allowing the users to choose which software works best for them. Results MetumpX is a Ubuntu-based software package that facilitate easy download and installation of 103 tools spread across the standard metabolomics pipeline. As far as the authors know MetumpX is the only solution of its kind where the focus lies on automating development of software workstations. Hospital ethics committees (HECs) are typically charged with addressing ethical disputes, conflicts, and dilemmas that arise in the course of patient care. HECs are not widely viewed as having a therapeutic role for health care professionals who experience psychological distress or anticipatory grief in the course of discharging professional duties. A case is presented in which an ethics consultation was requested, chiefly, to secure emotional support for health care professionals who had been asked by a patient to discontinue life-sustaining treatments. As the case demonstrates, HECs may be called upon to provide emotional support and reassurance to health care professionals who willingly carry out psychologically difficult actions, even though these actions may be ethically uncontroversial. In providing this service, the HEC may not necessarily engage in its customary activity of deliberating an ethics issue and resolving a conflict but may still provide valuable assistance, as in the case presented.
