A statistical analysis of interstellar He+ pickup ion measurements from SOHO/CTOF combined with magnetic field data from WIND/MFI enable quantitative study of wave-particle interactions in the inner heliosphere for the first time. Magnetic field vector measurements with a time resolu-tion of 3 seconds are used to determine power spectrum char-acteristics of interplanetary magnetic turbulence. These spec-tral characteristics are then compared in superposed epoch and correlation analyses with He+ fluxes and spectra. The observed pickup ion velocity distributions can be explained consistently as a consequence of pitch angle scattering of the interstellar pickup ions by Alfvenic fluctuations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We present a recent analysis with 1996 SOHO CELIAS CTOF data, which reveals correlations of He+ pickup ion fluxes and spectra with the magnetic field strength and solar wind density. The motivation is to better understand the ubiquitous large variations in both pickup ion fluxes and their velocity distributions found in interstellar pickup ion datasets. We concentrate on time periods of that can be associated with compression regions in the solar wind. Along with enhancements of the overall pickup ion fluxes, adiabatic heating and acceleration of the pickup ions are also observed in these regions. Transport processes that lead to the observed compressions and related heating or acceleration are discussed. A shift in velocity space associated with traveling interplanetary compression regions is observed, and a simple model presented to explain this phenomenon based on the conserved magnetic adiabatic moment., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Solar Wind 10 Conference Proceedings Paper

We present first results on the Ca isotopic abundances derived from the high resolution Mass Time-of-Flight (MTOF) spectrometer of the charge, element, and isotope analysis system (CELIAS) experiment on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). We obtain isotopic ratios 40Ca/42Ca = (128+-47) and 40Ca/44Ca = (50+-8), consistent with terrestrial values. This is the first in situ determination of the solar wind calcium isotopic composition and is important for studies of stellar modeling and solar system formation since the present-day solar Ca isotopic abundances are unchanged from their original isotopic composition in the solar nebula., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

This paper presents a final report on Data Reduction and Analysis from The SOHO Spacecraft from November 1, 1996-October 31, 1999. Observations of X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emissions from comet C/Hyakutake 1996 B2 made by the Rontgen X-ray satellite (ROSAT) and the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) revealed a total X-ray luminosity of about 500 MW.

Using solar wind particle data from the charge, element and isotope analysis system (CELIAS) experiment on the SOHO mission, densities of the elements O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ca, and Fe are derived, and their abundance is analyzed before, during and after the 6 Janaury 1997 coronal mass ejection event (CME). In the interstream and coronal hole regions before and after this event, typical solar wind abundances for the elements investigated were found. However, during the passage of the coronal mass ejection and during the passage of the erupted filament, the elemental composition differed markedly from typical solar wind. For the passage of the CME and for the passage of the erupted filament, a mass-dependent enhancement of the elements was found, with a monotonic increase towards heavier elements. Si/O and Fe/O ratios of the order of one during these time periods were observed.

Observations of isotope fractionation in the solar wind for the Mg and Ne elements are reported on the basis of measurements performed by the mass time of flight (MTOF) sensor of the charge, element, and isotope analysis system (CELIAS) onboard the SOHO spacecraft. Their isotopic abundance ratios are shown to vary by (0.8+/-0.6) amu in the solar wind bulk velocity range from 350 km/s to 650 km/s. A good correlation is noticed between the isotope fractionation and the elemental fractionation 4He/1H in the solar wind. The results were discussed in the context of recent theoretical models, which predict isotope fractionation in the solar wind by variable Coulomb friction in several solar wind regimes.

The interplanetary propagation aspects of the first X-class solar flare and coronal mass ejection are discussed. The solar data relevant to this event are summarized. Data from WIND and charge element and isotope analysis system (CELIAS) show solar wind plasma and interplanetary magnetic field disturbances early on 12 July 1996. It was observed that the extrapolation of the coronal mass ejection back to the flare time suggests a close association between them. Moreover, the coronal mass ejection speed is similar to the type two shock's speed. The results suggest that the coronal mass ejection is intimately related to the shock itself.

The charge element and isotope analysis system (CELIAS) experiment, designed to continuously measure the composition of the solar wind and solar suprathermal particles, is presented. Information on proton velocity, kinetic temperature, density and out-of-ecliptic flow angle is obtained. A preliminary statistical analysis of proton parameters and freeze-in temperatures, obtained during the first 18 months of the operation of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), is presented. The first determinations of neon isotopic abundances with CELIAS yielded an excellent agreement with the Apollo-foil experiment. The magnesium isotopic composition in the solar wind agrees with the data acquired from earth.

The solar wind streams observed from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and Ulysses, WIND spacecraft during the whole solar month are discussed. These solar wind streams, with speeds in excess of 500 km/s, were detected from 10 August to 8 September 1996. The data covering Carrington rotations 1912 and 1913 are presented. The magnetic field azimuthal angle observations at 1 AU from WIND show that all the streams are associated with outward fields near the sun. The stream structure near 320 deg was associated with the central meridian passage of a coronal hole. The Fe XIV ground based observations show a region of low intensity in the zero to 170 deg longitude. The question of whether the streams arise from equatorial features or represent flows coming from higher latitude features is not solved.

We continue to analyze and interpret data from the MTOF sensor on SoHO, using recently obtained calibration data to improve our understanding of instrument response. We have presented a number of talks demonstrating the excellent instrument resolution and also displaying the temporal behavior of solar wind Fe(sup 54) and Fe(sup 56) isotopes and the element Cr(52). In addition, the isotopic ratios Ne(sup 20)/Ne (sup 22) = (13.8 +/- 0.7) and Ne(sup 20)/Ne(sup 21) = (440 +/- 110) were obtained from MTOF data. These ratios agree with the values obtained from the Apollo foil solar wind experiments and with values which have been derived from measurements on lunar and meteoritic samples.

The Wind spacecraft was launched in November 1994. In the first half of 1995 it was in the interplanetary medium upstream of the Earth. The Solar Wind and Suprathermal Ion Composition Experiment (SMS) on Wind consists of three sensors, the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS), the Suprathermal Ion Composition Spectrometer (STICS), and the high mass resolution spectrometer (MASS). All three instruments utilize electrostatic deflection combined with time-of-flight measurement. The data from these three sensors allows the determination of the ionic composition of the solar wind in a variety of solar wind conditions over a large energy/charge range (0.5 to 230 keV/e). We have examined the Wind database for time periods conducive to observing solar wind iron. With the high mass resolution of the MASS spectrometer (M/Delta-M greater than 100) iron is easily identified while the electrostatic deflection provides information concerning the mass/charge distribution. We present here the relative abundance of iron charge states in the solar wind near 1 AU.

The elemental composition and charge state distributions of heavy ions of the solar wind provide essential information about: (1) atom-ion separation processes in the solar atmosphere leading to the 'FIP effect' (the overabundance of low First Ionization potential (FIP) elements in the solar wind compared to the photosphere); and (2) coronal temperature profiles, as well as mechanisms which heat the corona and accelerate the solar wind. This information is required for solar wind acceleration models. The SWICS instrument on Ulysses measures for all solar wind flow conditions the relative abundance of about 8 elements and 20 charge states of the solar wind. Furthermore, the Ulysses high-latitude orbit provides an unprecedented look at the solar wind from the polar coronal holes near solar minimum conditions. The MASS instrument on the WIND spacecraft is a high-mass resolution solar wind ion mass spectrometer that will provide routinely not only the abundances and charge state of all elements easily measured with SWICS, but also of N, Mg, S. The MASS sensor was fully operational at the end of 1994 and has sampled the in-ecliptic solar wind composition in both the slow and the corotating fast streams. This unique combination of SWICS on Ulysses and MASS on WIND allows us to view for the first time the solar wind from two regions of the large coronal hole. Observations with SWICS in the coronal hole wind: (1) indicate that the FIP effect is small; and (2) allow us determine the altitude of the maximum in the electron temperature profile, and indicate a maximum temperature of approximately 1.5 MK. New results from the SMS instruments on Wind will be compared with results from SWICS on Ulysses.

Acceleration of interstellar pickup H(+) and He(+) as well as of solar wind protons and alpha particles has been observed on Ulysses during the passage of a corotating interaction region (CIR) at approximately 4.5 AU. Injection efficiencies for both the high thermal speed interstellar pickup ions (H(+) and He(+)) and the low thermal speed solar wind ions (H(+) and He(++) are derived using velocity distribution functions of protons, pickup He(+) and alpha particles from less than 1 to 60 keV/e and of ions (principally protons) above approximately 60 keV. The observed spatial variations of the few keV and the few hundred keV accelerated pickup protons across the forward shock of CIR indicate a two stage acceleration mechanism. Thermal ions are first accelerated to speeds of 3 to 4 times the solar wind speed inside the CIR, presumably by some statistical mechanism, before reaching higher energies by a shock acceleration process. Our results also indicate that (1) the injection efficiencies for pickup ions are almost 100 times higher than they are for solar wind ions, (2) pickup H(+) and He(+) are the two most abundant suprathermal ion species and they carry a large fraction of the particle thermal pressure, (3) the injection efficiency is highest for protons, lowest for He(+), and intermediate for alpha particles, (4) both H(+) and He(+) have identical spectral shapes above the cutoff speed for pickup ions, and (5) the solar wind frame velocity distribution function of protons has the form F(w) = F(sub o)w(sup -4) for 1 is less than w is less than approximately 5, where w is the ion speed divided by the solar wind speed. Above w approximately 5-10 the proton spectrum becomes steeper. These results have important implications concerning acceleration of ions by shocks and CIRs, acceleration of anomalous cosmic rays, and particle dynamics in the outer heliosphere.

One of the nine experiments on Ulysses (launched October, 1990), the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer, utilizes an energy per charge deflection system along with time of flight technology to uniquely determine the mass and mass per charge of solar wind particles. Thus the composition of various solar wind types can be analyzed. Using the SWICS data accumulated during the in-ecliptic phase of the mission, we have determined the sulfur abundance, relative to silicon, in two different types of solar wind: transient and coronal hole associated flows. Sulfur is of extreme interest because it is one of the few elements that lies in the transitional region of the FIP-dependent relative abundance enrichment function, observed for solar energetic particles and some types of solar wind flows.

For the March/April 1991 time period, the alpha/proton abundance ratio, the proton kinetic temperature and speed distributions, and the relative abundance of O(+7) to O(+6) is determined over each 13-minute duty cycle of the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICs) experiment on Ulysses. The ratio O(+7)/O(+6) (as a relative measure of ionization temperature) is shown to be useful in identifying possible coronal mass ejection (CME) events. We report measurements of silicon/oxygen abundance ratios and silicon and oxygen charge state distributions in the solar wind during a CME event and compare these compositions to a 'normal' solar wind time period.

Data from the ion charge-energy-mass spectrometer CHEM flown on AMPTE/CCE spacecraft are used to investigate the origin, transport, and losses of energetic He(+) and He(2+) ions in the earth's magnetosphere. The L profiles of the average ion phase space density f were determined as a function of the magnetic momentum. It is shown that the L profiles have an inner part, where f increases with L for both He(+) adn He(2+) and where steady-state conditions are fulfilled. The outer boundary L(lim) of this region is located at a distance that depends on the ion species and the geomagnetic activity level. Steady-state conditions continue outside L(lim) for He(+) ions, while the He(2+) ion distribution outside L(lim) is strongly influenced by ion convection causing a lack of steady-state conditions. It is concluded that solar wind is the origin of the He(2+), while a mixed origin is suggested for the He(+) ions, in which the major contribution is from the solar wind via charge exchange production from the He(2+) ions.

Data from the ultralow-energy charge analyzer and energetic particle anisotropy spectrometer sensors, acquired when the ICE spacecraft flew past Comet Giacobini-Zinner on September 11, 1985, are combined, and a single, self-consistent analysis technique is applied to derive a single-particle spectrum from about 200 to 1600 km/s. This information, together with the deduced bulk flow speed of the ions, is used to calculate a parallel diffusion coefficient in the transition region downstream of the bow wave (2.3 +/- 0.5) x 10 exp 17 sq cm/s; the corresponding scattering mean free path is (6 +/- 1) x 10 exp 4 km. The parallel diffusion coefficient is found to depend on the collision frequency of water group ions with Alfven waves, which are assumed to be propagating parallel (antiparallel) to the magnetic field.

A comprehensive list is presented of the solar wind oxygen and carbon charge states and abundances measured in all magnetosheath periods during the lifetime of the AMPTE/CCE satellite, 1984-1988. A surprisingly variable C/O ratio is found. The variations seem to be strongly correlated to the source temperature in the corona where the solar wind responsible for the particular flow originated.

Evidence is presented for focused transport of energetic particles along magnetic field lines draped around a coronal mass ejection. This evidence was obtained with the University of Maryland/Max-Planck-Institute experiment on the ISEE-3 spacecraft during the decay phase of the June 6, 1979, solar particle event. During the early portion of the decay phase of this event, interplanetary magnetic field lines were apparently draped around a coronal mass ejection, leading to a small focusing length on the western flank where ISEE 3 was located. A period of very slow decrease of particle intensity was observed, along with large sunward anisotropy in the solar wind frame, which is inconsistent with predictions of the standard Fokker-Planck equation models for diffusive transport. It was found possible to fit the observations, assuming that focused transport dominates and that the particle pitch angle scattering is isotropic.

We present the results of a survey of iron and oxygen charge state distributions as detected by the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer on the Ulysses spacecraft. The results are categorized in terms of the ionization temperature determined every approximately 13 minute instrument cycle from the O(+7) to O(+6) ratio. Our preliminary Fe/O abundance ratio is 0.12 averaged over this 3 month survey. The Fe charge state distributions accumulated during times of high oxygen ionization temperatures are clearly nonisothermal.

We present new data on rare ions in the solar wind. Using the Ulysses-SWICS instrument with its very low background we have searched for low-charge ions during a 6-d period of low-speed solar wind and established sensitive upper limits for many species. In the solar wind, we found He(1+)/He(2+) of less than 5 x 10 exp -4. This result and the charge state distributions of heavier elements indicate that all components of the investigated ion population went through a regular coronal expansion and experienced the typical electron temperatures of 1 to 2 million Kelvin. We argue that the virtual absence of low-charge ions demonstrates a very low level of nonsolar contamination in the source region of the solar wind sample we studied. Since this sample showed the FlP effect typical for low-speed solar wind, i.e., an enhancement in the abundances of elements with low first ionization potential, we conclude that this enhancement was caused by an ion-atom separation mechanism operating near the solar surface and not by foreign material in the corona.

We report an initial survey of solar wind silicon and oxygen using data obtained with the Ulysses Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer. In this study, the O(+7)/O(+6) ratio is used to group silicon counts accumulated over a two month period. Results on Si charge state distributions, relative Si/O abundances, and associated proton kinetic temperature and speed distributions are presented.

The preinjection and postinjection suprathermal energy spectra of the ion species H(+), O(+), He(+), and He(++) in two events in which substorm-associated particle injections were observed in both the near-earth plasma sheet and farther down the tail were determined using data obtained by the Suprathermal Energetic Ion Charge Analyzer on AMPTE IRM and the Charge Energy Mass Spectrometer on AMPTE CCE. Similar spectral changes were observed in both locations. In both cases, the spectra became harder with injection. Postinjection, the flux decreased exponentially with radial distance. The gradients observed for all ion species were very similar.

The design of a high-resolution ion-mass analyzer is described, which is based on an accurate measurement of the time of flight (TOF) of ions within a region configured to produce a harmonic potential. In this device, the TOF, which is independent of ion energy, is determined from a start pulse from secondary electrons produced when the ion passes through a thin carbon foil at the entrance of the TOF region and at a stop pulse from the ion striking a microchannel plate upon exciting the region. A laboratory prototype instrument called 'VMASS' was built and was tested at the Goddard Space Flight Center electrostatic accelerator, showing a good mass resolution of the instrument. Sensors of the VMASS type will form part of the WIND Solar Wind and Suprathermal Ion experiment, the Soho mission, and the Advanced Composition Explorer.

The Univ. of Maryland portion investigated the following areas. The Space Physics Group performed studies of data from the AMPTE/CCE spacecraft CHEM experiment and found that the ratio of solar wind to photospheric abundances decreased rather smoothly with the first ionization potential (FIP) of the ion with the low FIP ion being about a factor of two overabundant. Carbon and hydrogen fit this trend particularly well. Several occurrences were analyzed of field aligned beams observed when CCE was upstream of the Earth's bow shock. Also using CHEM data, ring current intensity and composition changes during the main and recovery phases of the great geomagnetic storm that occurred in February 1986 was examined in detail. Still using CHEM data, ring current characteristics were examined in a survey of 20 magnetic storms ranging in size from -50 nT to -312 nT. A study was done of energetic ion anisotropy characteristics in the Earth's magnetosheath region using data from the UMD/MPE experiment on ISEE-1. The properties were analyzed of approx. 30 to 130 keV/e protons and alpha particles upstream of six quasi-parallel interplanetary shocks that passed by the ISEE-3 spacecraft during 1978 to 1979. Work from NASA-Goddard include studies from the High Energy Cosmic Ray Group, Low Energy Cosmic Ray Group, Low Energy Gamma Ray Group, High Energy Astrophysics Theory Group, and the X ray Astronomy Group.
