Η παρούσα διατριβή διερευνά τη σύνδεση μεταξύ της ημιτελής αποαποικιοποίησης και των περιβαλλοντικών αδικιών. Καταγράφει τις περιβαλλοντικές αδικίες ως τη συνέχεια του αποικισμού, την «αποικιοκρατία με άλλα μέτρα» και υποστηρίζει ότι η ημιτελής αποαποικιοποίηση συνδέεται στενά με το φαινόμενο που ονομάζεται «νεο-αποικισμός» και «αποικιοκρατία- εποίκων». Για να υποστηρίξουμε τα επιχειρήματά μας, εξετάζουμε τις περιπτώσεις των κατοίκων των νησιών Torres Strait της Αυστραλίας και των Inuit της Αρκτικής (Καναδάς). Οι επιλεγμένες περιπτώσεις δείχνουν πώς οι ιστορικές και οι συνεχιζόμενες πολιτικές αποικιοποίησης συμβάλλουν στους αγώνες των αυτόχθονων κοινοτήτων για περιβαλλοντική δικαιοσύνη. Χρησιμοποιώντας θεωρητικά πλαίσια όπως η δομική βία, ο μαρξισμός και ο κονστρουκτιβισμός, ρίχνουμε φως στη σύνθετη δυναμική πίσω από τις περιβαλλοντικές αδικίες, υπογραμμίζοντας την αναγκαιότητα ολοκληρωμένων προσπαθειών αποαποικιοποίησης που δίνουν προτεραιότητα στα δικαιώματα των αυτόχθονων. Αυτά τα ευρήματα προσφέρουν πολύτιμες γνώσεις για την περιβαλλοντική αδικία και την επιρροή της αποικιοκρατίας στη διαμόρφωση αυτών των αδικιών. Επιπλέον, παρέχει μια βάση για μελλοντική έρευνα, διαμόρφωση πολιτικής και μετασχηματιστικές αλλαγές που στοχεύουν σε πιο δίκαιο και βιώσιμο μέλλον για τις αυτόχθονες κοινότητες. This dissertation investigates the connection between incomplete decolonization and environmental injustices. It documents environmental injustices as the continuity of colonization, «colonialism with other measures», and argues that the incomplete decolonization is strongly associated with the phenomenon named 'neo-colonization' and 'settler colonialism'. To support our arguments, we examine the cases of Torres Strait Islanders of Australia and Inuit of the Arctic (Canada). The selected cases illustrate how historical and ongoing colonization policies contribute to indigenous communities' struggles for environmental justice. Utilizing theoretical frameworks such as structural violence, Marxism and constructivism we shed light on the complex dynamics behind environmental injustices, underscoring the necessity of comprehensive decolonization efforts that prioritize indigenous rights. These findings offer valuable insights into environmental injustice and colonialism's influence in shaping these injustices. Furthermore, it provides a basis for future research, policy formulation and transformative changes that aim at more equitable and sustainable futures for indigenous communities.

Έρευνες διαχρονικά αναφέρονται σε Μαθητές με αργό ρυθμό μάθησης οι οποίοι αποτελούν ένα συγκεκριμένο μαθητικό πληθυσμό με σοβαρή δυσκολία να ακολουθήσουν το ρυθμό μάθησης της τάξης, με χαμηλές επιδόσεις σε όλα τα μαθήματα, με χαμηλά κίνητρα μάθησης και με υψηλό ποσοστό σχολικής αποτυχίας. Δυσκολεύουν την διδασκαλία στην τάξη και διαχρονικά αποτελούν σοβαρό πρόβλημα για την εκπαίδευση. Για τον εντοπισμό και την αναγνώριση τους επικρατούν δύο κύρια κριτήρια, το ένα αφορά την νοητική τους λειτουργία η οποία υπολογίζεται να κυμαίνεται περίπου στο 70 με 90 IQ με ψυχομετρική μέτρηση και το άλλο τη διαχρονικά χαμηλή μαθησιακή τους επίδοση σε όλα τα μαθήματα. Νοητικές και μαθησιακές αναπηρίες αποκλείονται από τον ορισμό. Δεν υπάρχουν δεδομένα που να αναφέρονται στην αποτελεσματικότητα του εκπαιδευτικού. Συνεπώς, διαχρονικά στην πράξη οι εκπαιδευτικοί φαίνεται να μην γνωρίζουν τα στοιχεία της διδασκαλίας τα οποία πιθανόν να αυξάνουν τα μαθησιακά επιτεύγματα του συγκεκριμένου μαθητικού πληθυσμού. Επιπλέον διαφαίνεται ότι δεν υπάρχουν έρευνες που να συνδέουν το εύρος της επίδρασης των εκπαιδευτικών στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα των μαθητών με αργό ρυθμό μάθησης. Στην έρευνα με βάση το θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο της Έρευνας Εκπαιδευτικής Αποτελεσματικότητας και συγκεκριμένα του Δυναμικού Μοντέλου Εκπαιδευτικής αποτελεσματικότητας διερευνάται το μέγεθος της επίδρασης των παραγόντων αποτελεσματικότητας στο επίπεδο της τάξης στα γνωστικά αποτελέσματα των μαθητών με αργό ρυθμό μάθησης. Τέθηκαν τρία ερευνητικά ερωτήματα: Ποιοι από τους παράγοντες αποτελεσματικής διδασκαλίας του ΔΜΕΑ σχετίζονται θετικά με τα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα των μαθητών με αργό ρυθμό μάθησης; Οι παράγοντες αποτελεσματικής διδασκαλίας έχουν την ίδια επίδραση στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα των μαθητών με αργό ρυθμό μάθησης; Ποιες από τις πέντε διαστάσεις μέτρησης των παραγόντων αποτελεσματικής διδασκαλίας έχουν μεγαλύτερη επίδραση στα μαθησιακά αποτελέσματα των μαθητών με αργό ρυθμό μάθησης; Για την διεξαγωγή της έρευνας συλλέγηκαν δεδομένα από δύο επίπεδα, των εκπαιδευτικών και των μαθητών. Τα δεδομένα που αφορούσαν τους μαθητές (νοητικό επίπεδο και γνωστικά επιτεύγματα) συλλέγηκαν αρχή και τέλος της σχολικής χρονιάς 2014-15. Τα δεδομένα που αφορούσαν τους εκπαιδευτικούς (ποιότητα της διδασκαλίας) συλλέγηκαν με τη μέθοδο της παρατήρησης κατά τη διάρκεια της ίδιας σχολικής χρονιάς. Η ανάλυση της ποιότητας της διδασκαλίας έγινε με τα Μοντέλα Πολυεπίπεδων Στατιστικών Αναλύσεων (Multilevel Modeling Analysis). Τα αποτελέσματα φανέρωσαν πέντε παράγοντες του ΔΜΕΑ (Δόμηση, Εφαρμογή, Μοντελοποίηση μαθήματος, Υποβολή Ερωτήσεων και Περιβάλλον μάθησης στην τάξη) να έχουν σημαντική επίδραση στα αποτελέσματα των μαθητών με αργό ρυθμό μάθησης. Επίσης, οι διαστάσεις μέτρησης Διαφοροποίησης και Συχνότητα φάνηκε να σημειώνουν την μεγαλύτερη επίδραση στα μαθησιακά τους αποτελέσματα. Η ενίσχυση των αποτελεσμάτων στους μαθητές με αργό ρυθμό μάθησης συνδέεται για πρώτη φορά με τις διδακτικές συμπεριφορές του εκπαιδευτικού. Επιπλέον καταδεικνύει την ανάγκη αναθεώρησης κάποιων πρακτικών παροχής βοήθειας σε αυτούς τους μαθητές βασισμένο στις αρχές της ενιαίας εκπαίδευσης δίνοντας στον εκπαιδευτικό της τάξης σημαντικό ρόλο. Η συνεισφορά των αποτελεσμάτων της έρευνας αφορά στον τομέα της χάραξης πολιτικής στο θέμα του εντοπισμού και της θεσμοθέτησης των αποτελεσματικών πρακτικών και στην ανάγκη για σχεδιασμού προγραμμάτων επιμόρφωσης εκπαιδευτικών τα οποία να ανταποκρίνονται τις εκπαιδευτικές ανάγκες των μαθητών με αργό ρυθμό μάθησης. In the literature, a specific student population, with characteristics that pose challenges for teachers, is identified. Slow learners are reported as struggling in the classroom, achieving low school results and being at a high risk of drop-out. Nonetheless, it is also reported that they do not present any mental or learning disabilities. Although they are presented in the literature as a specific student population, there is no single, standard definition for these students, except for two main criteria accepted: their intellectual functioning with an approximate IQ score of between 70-90 and low school results. Τhere is a common learning profile reported in the literature, with five main learning characteristics: they appear to have serious difficulties in understanding, integrating, applying, generalising and developing critical thinking based on the new knowledge acquired. Different teaching approaches had been implemented, which were ultimately criticised either for the high cost of application or for their ineffectiveness. Previous studies had revealed that teachers had failed to deal with these students in the classroom and, thus, this specific student population should be further examined, in order to address their educational needs. The study aims to examine the impact of classroom level factors of the dynamic model on slow learners’ outcomes. Furthermore, this study searches for evidence of the extent to which each of these effectiveness factors are associated with slow learners’ outcomes. Thus, a sample of 40 classes was drawn and tests in the language lesson were administered to all Grade 4 and Grade 5 students (n=707) at the beginning and end of the 2014-2015 school year. Further, an intellectual test was also administered to the sample of students. Thereafter, a procedure to identify slow learners was established, with the test results evaluated based on criteria drawn from the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Two groups were formed from the sample, one which met the criteria of slow learners and one which didn’t present the elements associated with this group. Moreover, teacher behaviours in each class were examined twice during the school year in which the research took place, using two observational instruments, one high and one low inference, referred to in the dynamic model. Separate multi-level modelling analyses for each group of students were conducted, to identify the impact of the teacher factors on students’ outcomes. The results of these analyses reveal that some of the classroom level factors of the dynamic model explain slow learners’ outcomes in language. Even though the effect is found to be small, the results are in line with other studies in the effectiveness field. It is also found that a specific measurement dimension of teacher factors was more associated with slow learners’ outcomes. The contribution of this study to the concept of slow learners and to the teachers’ effectiveness field is acknowledged by establishing a dynamic learning profile by conducting a study on a specific student population. Implications of findings for theory, practice and teaching policy are drawn in regard to slow learners.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterised by persistent deficits in social reciprocity. Deficits in emotion perception are common in ASD and suggested to stem from a generalised deficit in the processing of facial affect. The literature however is inconsistent, stressing the importance of methodological factors that might bring individuals with ASD to a disadvantage. Two relevant theoretical frameworks are considered: 1) the behavioural self-regulation account proposes that affective atypicalities stem from deficits in the processing of the emotional signals and/or the regulation of appropriate responses to these signals; and 2) the social motivation account proposes that the mechanisms behind either of these two stages of emotion understanding are intact and that behavioural deficits stem from reduced weighting of social information. This Ph.D. aimed to disentangle between the two theories in the context of social threats by taking into account the necessary methodological factors. Experiment 1 investigated the contextual impact of gaze direction on the categorisation of facial expressions of anger and fear. Experiment 2 investigated both free action choice in response to implicit social threats –facial expressions of anger and fear- and their emotion categorisation accuracy in visual periphery. Across both studies ASD and typically developing (TD) adolescents demonstrated intact processing of both anger and fear in direct view and in visual periphery and were sensitive to the changes in emotional intensity of the stimuli. In Experiment 1, although the control group was overall more accurate than the ASD group in emotion decoding, gaze direction impacted the processing of threat similarly in both groups. Specifically, gaze direction raised the saliency of the threat for the observer and enhanced their sensitivity to the most salient ones. In Experiment 2, both groups demonstrated an overall tendency to avoid emotional agents, which was particularly evident in the case of anger. Taken together, the mechanisms behind the processing of facial social threats appear relatively spared in ASD adolescents and the impact of contextual factors are similar ASD and typical development. Adolescents with ASD are able to use social threats to adapt their behaviour by avoiding the emotional agent, which is not surprising during a developmental period characterised by enhanced reactivity to threat. These findings are discussed in terms of the social motivation and behavioural self-regulation frameworks and future directions are proposed.; Les troubles du spectre de l’autisme (TSA) sont caractérisés par des difficultés persistantes dans les domaines de la communication et des interactions sociales. Les individus atteints de TSA ont notamment des difficultés à décoder les émotions d’autrui et il est souvent suggéré qu’un déficit général du traitement des visages émotionnels est à l’origine de ces difficultés. Cependant, les résultats de la littérature sont incohérents et soulignent l'importance de facteurs méthodologiques qui pourraient influencer la performance des personnes TSA. Deux théories actuelles sont pertinentes au regard de ces difficultés rencontrées dans les interactions sociales : 1) la théorie de la régulation comportementale propose que ces difficultés résultent de dysfonctionnements du traitement des émotions et/ou des mécanismes permettant de répondre de façon appropriée à ces émotions; et 2) la théorie de la motivation sociale propose au contraire que ces mécanismes sont intacts et que les difficultés rencontrées sont le résultat d’un déficit de motivation sociale. International audience; Although, the quest to understand emotional processing in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) has led to an impressive number of studies, the picture that emerges from this research remains inconsistent. Some studies find that Typically Developing (TD) individuals outperform those with ASD in emotion recognition tasks, others find no such difference. In this paper, we move beyond focusing on potential group differences in behaviour to answer what we believe is a more pressing question: do individuals with ASD use the same mechanisms to process emotional cues? To this end, we rely on model-based analyses of participants' accuracy during an emotion categorisation task in which displays of anger and fear are paired with direct vs. averted gaze. Behavioural data of 20 ASD and 20 TD adolescents revealed that the ASD group displayed lower overall performance. Yet, gaze direction had a similar impact on emotion categorisation in both groups, i.e. improved accuracy for salient combinations (anger-direct, fear-averted). Critically, computational modelling of participants' behaviour reveals that the same mechanism, i.e. increased perceptual sensitivity, underlies the contextual impact of gaze in both groups. We discuss the specific experimental conditions that may favour emotion processing and the automatic integration of contextual information in ASD.

Joint attention (JA) and spontaneous facial mimicry (SFM) are fundamental processes in social interactions, and they are closely related to empathic abilities. When tested independently, both of these processes have been usually observed to be atypical in individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC). However, it is not known how these processes interact with each other in relation to autistic traits. This study addresses this question by testing the impact of JA on SFM of happy faces using a truly interactive paradigm. Sixty-two neurotypical participants engaged in gaze-based social interaction with an anthropomorphic, gaze-contingent virtual agent. The agent either established JA by initiating eye contact or looked away, before looking at an object and expressing happiness or disgust. Eye tracking was used to make the agent's gaze behavior and facial actions contingent to the participants' gaze. SFM of happy expressions was measured by Electromyography (EMG) recording over the Zygomaticus Major muscle. Results showed that JA augments SFM in individuals with low compared with high autistic traits. These findings are in line with reports of reduced impact of JA on action imitation in individuals with ASC. Moreover, they suggest that investigating atypical interactions between empathic processes, instead of testing these processes individually, might be crucial to understanding the nature of social deficits in autism. This Report traces the development of Labour Law and the implications for Industrial Relations, as well as social and employment policy more generally, in the two small Mediterranean countries of Cyprus and Malta during the period 1995–2005. This period was particularly important for the two countries as it coincided with their efforts for accession to the European Union (EU) and the process of harmonisation with the Acquis Communautaire. Since their independence in 1960 and 1964 respectively for Cyprus and Malta, successive Governments in each country – working with the social partners – had sought to steer a policy of social cohesion to underpin their development efforts. Whilst these strategies were successful in fostering a long period of economic growth and peaceful labour relations, a major outcome was the existence of relatively inflexible labour markets. Liberalisation and globalisation of international markets, coupled with the pressure exerted by the accession process, which required the implementation of the Acquis Communautaire necessitated a series of changes with far reaching implications in social and economic affairs. Naturally the framework of Labour Law – and labour practices thereof – came under increasing pressure to adapt and reform. The Executive Summary describes the main aims and objectives of the Report on the evolution of Labour Law in Cyprus and Malta in the period 1995-2005, and provides an outline of the component chapters. Specifically the Report is divided into three chapters. The first and second chapters consist of the individual Reports on Cyprus and Malta respectively. These constitute the main body of the Report and investigate the evolution of Labour Law in the two countries separately and the implications for Industrial Relations, employment and social policy. The third chapter provides a concluding overview of the two countries’ experiences and an evaluation of the state of implementation of the Acquis Communautaire in the fields examined., peer-reviewed
