Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is one of the most important sources of plant – based protein, for human and animal consumption. In Greece, faba beans are cultivated as annual, winter crop. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of faba bean seeds from Peru and the comparison of its characteristics with a variety, mainly cultivated in Greece (control). A field experiment was laid out at the experimental field of Agricultural University of Athens. Measurements included the agronomic traits, the yield characteristics, and the seed quality. According to the results, there were not significant differences between the two cultivars for the plant height, the number of seeds per pod, the yield and the crude protein content. The number of branches and the Thousand Seeds Weight were significant higher at the seeds from Peru. The fat content of the seed and the number of pod’s were higher at the control. In the present research work, we demonstrated that faba bean population from Peru can be cultivated in the Mediterranean region. The measurements showed that the crop’s growth was normal, and some characteristics of Peruvian beans showed better results than the cultivated varieties.

Wheat and maize are two of the most dominant crops of considerable importance in human nutrition. At the same time, agriculture is responsible for about 1/3 of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The aim of this study is to estimate the carbon footprint of the two aforementioned important crops in the region of Larissa, Greece. Under this context, the emitted CO2eq- per kg of product, the corresponding emissions per hectare and per g of harvested plant protein were estimated. The carbon footprint was measured using the CoolFarm Tool (Cool Farm Alliance). Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with local farmers. According to the results, the carbon footprint per hectare in maize (2,979 kg CO2eq- ha-1) is significantly higher compared to wheat (1,090 kg CO2eq- ha-1). In contrast, the differences in the footprints per kilogram of product and per g of harvested protein were insignificant. Tillage was found to be the main factor increasing CO2eq- emissions in both crops. In this research work we demonstrated that tillage regimes are crucial for mitigating agricultural related GHG emissions.

The European Union (EU) has been actively combating climate change for decades, and in 2019 it introduced its most ambitious project to date, the European Green Deal (EGD). EGD includes a variety of policies and strategies aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of climate change, foster an economic growth, and promote social equity. Recently, the European Commission has been contemplating the development of the European Blue Deal (EBD), which aims to address the growing water crises and water insecurity issues within the EU. Similar to the EGD, the EBD would encompass all sectors of the European economy, seeking integrated solutions to these pressing environmental problems. This review aims to assess the progress of the EGD, evaluate the objectives of the EBD, and provide insights into the factors that could either catalyze or hinder their effective and harmonious implementation. The concept of a "Teal Deal" (a combination of the blue and green color) which combines elements of both the EGD and the EBD, is explored, with particular emphasis on its implications for the agrifood sector. Here we argue on the necessity for a holistic approach to agricultural sustainability, rapid advancements in renewable energy, the adoption of crop diversification strategies, and the development of effective international policies to ensure global cooperation and support for these transformative initiatives. By addressing these key areas, the EU can make significant strides towards achieving its environmental and economic goals.

Agriculture contributes to global warming through the emissions of greenhouse gasses (GHGs). As one of the most important horticultural crops, tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is of great economic importance. Approximately 80% of the tomatoes grown around the world are processed into sauces, juices, ketchup, canned tomatoes, and soups. The goal of the present study was to assess the carbon footprint of commercially grown processing tomatoes in Greece. The emissions were calculated by using the Cool Farm Tool software. For data collection, a questionnaire was distributed to processing tomato producers. The questionnaires were completed by 40 producers from the main processing tomato-growing regions of Greece. The estimated total carbon footprint value of tomato cultivation for a mean area of 7.16 ha (producing 94.8 tn of tomatoes per ha) was 1,369,700 kg CO2-eq. Specifically, the estimated carbon footprint values per hectare and kg of fruit were 191,298.88 and 0.20 kg CO2-eq, respectively. In addition, the current study revealed that the highest CO2-eq emissions per tonne of fruit were observed in energy use (fuel consumption) for field operations, corresponding to 40.49% of the total emissions per tonne of product.

Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.), is a multipurpose crop, grown for fiber, seeds, and oil. This study aims to assess flax growth dynamics and agronomic traits using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) maps generated from multispectral imagery captured by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Conducted at the Agricultural University of Athens, the field experiment followed a split-plot design with four replicates, encompassing various sowing distances (30 and 40 cm, between rows) and fertilization treatments (urea fertilization, urea with inhibitors, organic fertilizer). NDVI index maps were produced at key growth stages (60, 90, 120, 150, and 179 Days After Sowing) to facilitate comprehensive growth analysis. The findings indicate that while fertilization treatments and sowing densities influenced early growth stages, no significant differences were observed post 90 DAS. NDVI values correlated with agronomic traits, particularly during the early vegetative phase, highlighting the potential of UAV-based NDVI mapping for precise flax cultivation monitoring.

Population growth has led to an increase in food production, resulting in an increase in agricultural products in terms of quantity and quality. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) cultivation is prevalent in most areas of the world due to its high-quality grain and its potential to produce high yields under tough growing conditions. This study aimed to investigate all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by quinoa seed production in Greece and their relationship with farm-related factors, from fertilizer production to energy consumption for all cultivation techniques. The amount of all GHG emissions was estimated using Cool Farm Tool software. In order to collect data, a questionnaire including questions regarding cultivation details, soil characteristics, inputs, fuel, and water use was distributed and completed by forty quinoa producers from Central Greece. Accordingly, the estimated carbon footprint values per hectare and per kilogram of quinoa seed were 1,159.65 and 0.48 kg CO2-eq, respectively. The present research also found that the highest CO2-eq emissions per kilogram of quinoa seed were found to be associated with the production of fertilizers, with a value of 0.20 kg CO2-eq corresponding to 40.88% of the total emissions per kilogram of produced seed. Consequently, attention must be given for the mitigation of the environmental impact of quinoa seed production. It is particularly important to manage chemical fertilizers and agricultural machinery properly in order to ensure the sustainable cultivation of quinoa.

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is one of the most prominent and important industrial crops. In Greece, cotton farming occupies a significant share of the agricultural sector. However, the adverse effects of climate change have raised concerns regarding its performance in the near future, thus it is crucial to develop adaptation strategies for the production of cotton in Greece. One such alternative is the adoption of interspecific hybrids (G. hirsutum × G. barbadense). These hybrids have been suggested to be more resilient and to outperform their parental varieties. In order to evaluate the potential of such hybrids, a field experiment was conducted in two sites in Greece. Two novel cotton hybrids (1432 and 701) and a conventional variety (‘Elpida’) were farmed in two different plant densities (8 and 13 plants m2) and their agronomic traits (biomass, LAI), yield and yield components (seed cotton yield, lint yield, seed yield, ration lint/seed cotton, and ratio seed/seed cotton), and quality traits were assessed. The agronomic traits and the yield of the hybrids were equal or superior in comparison to ‘Elpida’. Similar findings were also observed in the majority of the quality traits. Based on our results, interspecific cotton hybrids are promising for the European cotton sector.

Processing tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is regarded amongst the most dominant horticultural crops globally. Yet, due to its elevated water and fertilization needs, its environmental footprint is significantly high. The recent efforts to reduce the footprint of agriculture have rekindled the search for optimized fertilization regimes in tomato. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of different urea fertilizers and tomato pomace-based composts on the performance and quality traits of processing tomato. A two-year field experiment was conducted in the Larissa region, Central Greece, during 2018–2019. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design (RCBD), with five treatments: control, urea (Urea), urea with nitrification and urease inhibitors (Urea + NI + UI), processing tomato pomace with farmyard manure (TP + FM), and processing tomato pomace with compost from plant residues (TP + CM). Measurements included soil total nitrogen (STN), soil organic matter (SOM), root length density (RLD), arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) colonization, dry weight per plant, fruit yield (number per plant, total yield, weight, diameter), fruit firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), lycopene content and yield, and fruit surface color (L*, a*, b*, CI). Overall, the best results in soil properties and quality traits were reported in the organic fertilization treatments (STN, SOM, AMF, TSS, TA, lycopene content, L*, a*, b*) and the differences among TP + FM and TP + CM were insignificant in their majority. On the contrary, fruit yield and its components were significantly improved in Urea + NI + UI.

In recent decades, agriculture in Greece has undergone significant changes due to the intensification of land use. This intensification, contrary to the sustainable land management, has an impact on the healthiness of the environmental agroecosystem. This study aimed to investigate if these cultivation systems influence some of the main edaphic properties and plant species diversity and which are the main anthropogenic interventions which may have a decisive role in the changes of soil physicochemical properties and the reduction of plant species. To assess the environmental implications among different types of land-use, the most sensitive and reliable edaphic indicators were measured and plant species diversity was recorded. Three land-use types such as maize crops, alfalafa and abandoned land were selected and ten fields with an area of approximately 1 ha in each land use type were taken. The results indicate that among the edaphic parameters pH, sand, electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic matter (SOM), NO3- as well as Ca+2 and Cu+2 soil concentration presented statistically significant differences among thirty cultivated fields. Among three different land uses, the edaphic variables EC, SOM, BD, Cal & Na concentrations presented significant differences. A higher soil organic matter content was observed in abandoned land while bulk density and electric conductivity value as well as Na+ concentrations were lower compared to other land uses. In total 122 taxa belonging to 30 families were recorded, while the families with the greatest species diversity were Poaceae, Asteraceae and Fabaceae in all land uses. Therophytes was the dominant life-form, followed by the Hemicryptophytes and Geophytes. The findings of the present study imply that different agronomic practices influence soil quality parameters, which are likely to affect species diversity and the environmental implications among different land uses.

Agricultural management practices can significantly affect soil hydraulic properties and processes in space and time. Cover crops are described as “crops grown primarily for the purpose of protecting and improving soil between periods of regular crop production”. They have long been valued for their soil conservation benefits, including reducing erosion, increasing infiltration, and improving soil health. Experiments were carried out on a clayey and on a sandy soil, following a RCB design, for two years, to examine the effects of various lentil cover cropping managements on soil hydraulic properties and subsequent corn yield. Three legume managements were tested before growing corn (rotation, incorporation as green manure, no cover crop). Soil hydraulic properties were assessed with the equation I= S*t -1/2+ Ktr*t + d. Corm productivity was determined by field samplings. Green manuring and rotation with lentil, lowered the Infiltration rate as well as the Hydraulic conductivity in the sandy soil, suggesting less irrigation water losses and higher water exploitation for the subsequent crop. On the contrary, for the clay soil, only Hydraulic conductivity of transiting zone was affected and especially during springtime. Legume rotation and green manure positively affected corn kernel yield in both soils.

The use of earthworms in bio-composting (vermicomposting) is gaining popularity as a bio-waste management approach for producing nutrient-rich organic fertilizer. Furthermore, the use of seaweed extracts as biostimulants changes the physical, biochemical, and biological aspects of the soil, as well as the architecture of plant roots, allowing for more effective nutrient uptake and increasing plant development and yields. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effect of biocompost and biostimulant on the development of the root system of cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) plant. An outdoor pot experiment was set up a completely randomized design, with four treatments including vermicompost, vermicompost amended with seaweed-based biostimulant, vermicompost mixed with spent mushroom substrate (SMS) and cattle manure (CM) compost, and vermicompost mixed with SMS+CM compost and amended with seaweed-based biostimulant. The results revealed that the highest values of root length density, root diameter, and nitrogen content in roots (1.36 cm cm-3, 1.29 mm, and 1.23%, respectively) were found in plants grown in the substrate of vermicompost mixed with SMS+CM compost and amended with seaweed-based biostimulant, pointed this out as a recommended treatment for increased biomass production, which is important in the processing of cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Climate change and environmental degradation pose an actual threat to Europe and the rest of the world. Innovative or retrovative crops could be components of alternative redesigned agro-ecosystems, meeting the EU Green Deal targets for reduced use of chemical inputs by 2030. The present study aimed to evaluate: a) the adaptation of production to the stormy effects of climate change, b) the detection of the receptivity of the producers to the application of the design of innovative and retro-innovative crops in the field, and c) the in-depth detection of inhibiting factors (natural resources, economic, social and anthropogenic factors) for producers. A quantitative research was performed using structured interviews (face to face - a set of questions) and open-ended questions. The selected sample was composed of 41 farmers and the study area was the Mani Peninsula, Southern Greece. The statistical processing of the answers showed a significant correlation of change receptivity with age, educational level and the main profession. Younger people, those with higher education and non-mainstream farmers are more receptive to change and switch to innovative crops. The environment, climatic and economic, requires adaptation and change in order to maintain sustainability. Producers are receptive to reforms and shifts to innovative and retro-innovative crops. However, there is a lack of coherent policies in the direction of building infrastructure, solving structural problems, training and transferring know-how, and finally, providing incentives and opportunities by creating and utilizing the appropriate tools.

Grain legume production contributes widely to ecosystem services and have the potential to improve soil structure, increase soil organic carbon and reduce soil compaction. Growing more legumes in future requires changes to the cropping system, the sequence, and crop management. The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of lentil cover cropping managements on (i) soil structure and (ii) subsequent corn yield, in two different soil types. Experiments were carried out on a clayey and on a sandy soil, following a RCB design, for two years. Three legume managements were tested before growing corn (rotation, incorporation as green manure, no cover crop). For assessing soil structure stability the instability index, β was used. Corm productivity was determined by field samplings. Both lentil management, had significant effect on the instability index β. Stability of soil aggregates was enhanced during spring and reduced during autumn, regardless of the lentil pre-treatment, confirming the seasonal variation of soil structure stability. Legume rotation and green manure positively affected corn kernel yield in both soils. Results suggest that lentil rotation or green manuring has a positive effect on soil structure on both sandy and clay soils, leading to higher yields for subsequent corn crop.

The present study aimed to assess the efficacy of slow-release fertilization and the tillage on the performance of Carthamus tinctorius L. apply via the utilization of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The study lasted from November 24, 2020, to June 16, 2021, and it was conducted in the experimental field of the Agricultural University of Athens. The experiment was set up in a split-plot design with four replications, two main plots [conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT)], and three sub-plots [untreated control (C), urea (U), and urea with nitrification and urease inhibitors (UI+NI)]. Using a multispectral camera (Parrot Sequoia) mounted on a UAV and a ground-based sensor, we were able to acquire crop reflectance data in the red and near-infrared electromagnetic spectrum necessary to calculate the NDVI index (Green Seeker). The information was sent into a geographic information system for analysis (ArcMap). Descriptive statistics were computed, geostatistical analysis was conducted, and the correlation between the reflection data from the two sensors was investigated for the statistical analysis of the data. The highest average NDVI values were recorded in the plots treated: A) with no soil treatment and urea fertilization, and B) with normal soil treatment and urea and nitrification inhibitor fertilizer. On the contrary, the highest yields were reported in CT and UI+NI.

Nitrogen fertilization is important for plant development. Because of the problems caused by urea, which is mainly used in nitrogen fertilizers, new types of fertilizers have inhibitors, that control the fertile disposal in soil. In addition, tillage practice is important in order to maintain soil productivity and prepare a good seedbed. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of implications of urea fertilizer with and without nitrification (MPA) and urease inhibitor (NBPT), and conventional and no-tillage systems on plant growth and yield of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) crop. A field experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replications, two main plots (conventional and no-tillage system), and three sub-plots (control, urea with and without nitrification and urease inhibitors). The results indicated that fertilization significantly affected plant height, dry weight, seed yield and number of capitula and the highest values observed with urea with urease inhibitor. Tillage practice influenced the number of capitula and number of seeds per capitulum, and the higher numbers were found under conventional tillage. The findings of the present study imply that urea fertilizer with nitrification and urease inhibitors was very efficient and contributed a notable impact on the plant growth and yield of safflower.

In hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) cultivation, an important management factor is apical cut (topping) as this modulates plant architecture, plant biomass allocation as well as the yield of inflorescences and cannabinoids per plant and area. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of topping treatment on agronomical and quality characteristics of two monoecious hemp varieties, ‘Fedora 17’ and ‘Felina’, A greenhouse pot experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD), with two topping treatments (untreated and topped). The results revealed that plant height of both varieties was negatively affected by topping treatment and the higher values were recorded in the untreated (137.02 and 134.56 cm for Fedora 17 and Felina, respectively). The highest values of dry weight per plant and bud dry weight per plant were noticed for topped plants. In conclusion, the findings of the present study implied that the hemp had a positive response to applied topping for all studied cultivars and the CBD content was higher in topped plants as topping stress increased cannabidiol (CBD) content.

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a major industrial crop that has being cultivated for centuries for the manufacturing of cigarettes, cigars, and other smoking products. Due to its negative effects on both human health and the environment, the European Union has adopted strict policies that aspire to reduce the consumption of tobacco. Herbal cigarettes are alternative smoking products that are often advertised as healthier than conventional tobacco cigarettes and are especially popular in Asian markets. Even though the available literature suggests that they are equally detrimental to human health, the introduction of tobacco-alternative crops (TACs) to the European tobacco industry could smoothen the abandonment of tobacco, and eventually smoking products altogether, in the EU. The aim of the present systematic review was to compile a list of possible TACs that could be incorporated in the European smoking industry, and highlight their strengths and weaknesses. The most dominant crops in the literature (and in the existing market products) were calendula (Calendula officinalis L.), mullein (Verbascum thapsus L.), ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A.Mey.), tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze), chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.), and mentha (Mentha spp.). Even though these crops are promising, further research is required for their incorporation in the European tobacco industry.

The literature suggests that nitrogen (N) fertilization increases yield in soybean. This study aimed to investigate the effects of N fertilization on: (i) The performance of soybean, and (ii) the weed flora. A two-year field experiment was carried out in Agrinio, Western Greece. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design, with four organic fertilizer treatments and six replications. The four treatments included 0 kg N ha−1 (N0/unfertilized control) and the application of 80 kg N ha−1, 100 kg N ha−1, and 120 kg N ha−1. The application of 120 N kg ha−1 resulted in the most notable increment of plant height (22.6–24%), biomass (10–13%), LAI values (14–17%), and yield (10–12%) compared to the N0. Compared to the N0, total weed biomass was increased by 26–32%, 34–49%, and 55–57% in N80, N100, and N120, respectively. The values of the H (Shannon), Dmg (Margalef), and J (Pielou) indices were unaffected by the fertilization, hence they did not affect weed biodiversity. CRI (crop resistance index), on the contrary, was negatively affected by N fertilization and was significantly reduced. Overall, our results indicate that the application of 80 kg N ha−1 is more efficient, can effectively improve the soybean performance, and enhance its yield.

The cultivation of black mustard [Brassica nigra (L.) Koch] has recently become increasingly popular and there is a raising demand for its oil and seeds from the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. A 2-year experiment was conducted in a split-plot design with three replications, two main plots (plant densities: 46 and 76 plants m-2) and four sub-plots (fertilization treatments: control, urea with and without urease and nitrification inhibitors, and compost) to evaluate the fertilization and plant density effect on seed oil content, oil yield, and fatty acids composition of black mustard under Mediterranean environment. The seed yield, oil content and yield were positively influenced by the increase of available nitrogen and negatively by the increase of plant density, with their highest values recorded in the low-density and urea with double inhibitors. In response to the quality characteristics of seed oil, low-density compost application raised the quantities of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). In conclusion, plant densities higher than 46 plants m-2 result in lower seed yield, oil content and yield, while the inorganic fertilization effect, specifically with urea with double inhibitors, was equally important in seed and oil yield; however, when the seed and/or oil are used for their nutraceutical and medicinal value, the use of compost is recommended, resulting in a significant increase in PUFA content.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) represents a chronic progressive fibrotic interstitial lung disease of unknown cause with an ominous prognosis. It remains an unprecedent clinical challenge due to its delayed diagnosis and unpredictable clinical course. The need for accurate diagnostic, prognostic and predisposition biomarkers in everyday clinical practice becomes more necessary than ever to ensure prompt diagnoses and early treatment. The identification of such blood biomarkers may also unravel novel drug targets against IPF development and progression. So far, the role of diverse blood biomarkers, implicated in various pathogenetic pathways, such as in fibrogenesis (S100A4), extracellular matrix remodelling (YKL-40, MMP-7, ICAM-1, LOXL2, periostin), chemotaxis (CCL-18, IL-8), epithelial cell injury (KL-6, SP-A, SP-D), autophagy and unfolded protein response has been investigated in IPF with various results. Moreover, the recent progress in genetics in IPF allows for a better understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms. So far, the causative mutations in pulmonary fibrosis include mutations in telomere-related genes and in surfactant-related genes, markers that could act as predisposition biomarkers in IPF. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview from the bench to bedside of current knowledge and recent insights on biomarkers in IPF, and to suggest future directions for research. Large-scale studies are still needed to confirm the exact role of these biomarkers.

Throughout the world, salinity is a major environmental issue that limits agricultural productivity, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. In addition, climate change is the most important reason for the salinization of agricultural soils in the world, so it is now essential to find solutions to increase salinity tolerance in plants. This study investigated the potential of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation to enhance the growth and yield performances of flax under different salinity levels by conducting a pot experiment. The experiment was laid out in a two-factor completely randomized design including AMF inoculation (AMF+: with inoculation; AMF−: without inoculation) and irrigation water salinity (0, 50, 100, and 150 mM NaCl). According to the results, it is evident that salt stress caused negative physiological effects, including limited growth, reduced photosynthesis, and decreased nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content in the shoots and roots of flax plants. Moreover, mycorrhizal association improved the salt tolerance of the plants by increasing chlorophyll content, and enhancing N and P shoot and root contents and consequently yield parameters, such as seed and stem fiber yield, particularly at moderate salt concentrations (50 and 100 mM NaCl). In particular, under 100 mM, AMF increased the total chlorophyll content, N shoot and root content, P shoot and root content, and seed and stem fiber yield by 30.4%, 36.1%, 31.0%, 38.9%, 45.4%, 35.2%, and 26.9%, respectively. As a result of using AMF, flax plants grown under salt stress exhibited tolerance, suggesting that AMF could be applied in saline environments to maintain ecological stability.

Tomato is one of the most significant vegetables in the world. Specifically, for the industrial tomato cultivation, the product is harvested when °Brix are at their peak. Technological advancements nowadays have made Decision Support Systems, based on Machine Learning Algorithms more applicable in a daily basis. Sustainable agriculture is evolving since farmers could be advised by this technology in order to take the best decision for their crops. Farmers who adopt this kind of technology will be able to know the quality of tomatoes. The implementation of a Decision Support System capable to predict the °Brix was conducted, based on various data from previous years, such as quality characteristics, the tomato hybrid used, weather conditions and soil data from the selected fields. Data came from fields from 6 different regions in Peloponnese, Greece over 3 cultivation periods. 12 different algorithms were tested in order to find which is the best one in terms of efficiency. Results of this research showed that the predicted °Brix were following the same pattern as the actual °Brix. This means that the DSS could advise the farmer about the ideal harvesting period where the °Brix will be maximized. The use of this DSS using real time weather data as an input will be a valuable tool for the farmers.

A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted in the Agricultural University of Athens in order to evaluate the effect of several greenhouse cover materials on the performance and yield of hemp. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments/greenhouses (G1, G2, G3, G4/Control, and G5). Measurements included plant height, PAR (Photosynthetic Active Radiation), chlorophyll content, solar irradiance, soil and leaf temperature, and yield components (the number of buds, their weight, length, and compact index, CBD content, and CBD yield per plant). The results of the present study suggest that the different polyethylene cover films alter the environment within the greenhouse and thus, affect the agronomic characteristics and yield traits of hemp. G1 reported the best results as it increased soil temperature and PAR values by 11-16% and 50-110% respectively, compared to G4. Concurrently, the majority of the bud characteristics were significantly improved in G1. Even though further research should be conducted in order to define the most suitable films for greenhouse hemp production, our results indicate that the optical properties of the greenhouse cover materials affect its yield and should always be considered.

A field experiment was conducted in the Agricultural University of Athens in order to evaluate the effect of different greenhouse cover materials on the CBD yield. Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L var. Futura 75) plants were grown in three different greenhouses, each constructed with different polyethylene films by PLASTIKA KRITIS S.A. The overall CBD yield per greenhouse was estimated once the cannabis buds matured. Following this evaluation, a business plan was formed for the greenhouse whose cover materials prompted the highest CBD yield. Out of the three greenhouses (GH1, GH2, and GH3), the highest CBD yield was reported on GH2. Two different cover materials, with different properties, were used for the construction of GH2, EVO 7507 AC and EVO 7526 AC. The results indicate that in a five-year span, cannabis production in greenhouses built with the aforementioned materials, could result in a Net Profit of more than 25.000.000 € ha-1. In conclusion, greenhouse cover materials should always be considered in cannabis greenhouse production. Even though greenhouse cannabis production for CBD oil seems to be a potentially profitable business in Greece, selecting appropriate cover materials can significantly increase producer’s profit.

Cotton is a plant, which is mainly cultivated in regions where the irrigation is necessary as rainwater is not adequate. Researches in the recent years have showed that the irrigation water used could be declined. Improvements in the technological field has made Decision Support Systems combined with Neural Networks and data analysis, an important tool of sustainable agriculture. Cotton producers need to reduce irrigation water needs and that can be achieved by using new technologies. The development Decision Support System was conducted, having 3 different types of input. Data derived from a variety of IoT sensors, weather stations, and on-site measurements (yield and ΕΜ38) derived from 3 fields in Greece, creating a dataset of 9 different inputs. A total of 13 different algorithms were tested and evaluated in order to determine which one is the ideal for our dataset. The adoption of this technology in real data predicted the reduction of the irrigation times, ensuring that there will be no losses in the final yield.

Even though Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a psychoactive substance, studies indicate that it has therapeutic properties. Moreover, the modification in Greece legislation regarding the legalization of cannabis has resulted in new business opportunities for medical-cannabis related companies. This study aimed to evaluate whether different greenhouse cover materials affect THC yield and propose a business plan for any potential medical-cannabis related company in Greece. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of different plastic cover films in greenhouses for the cultivation of Cannabis sativa. Furthermore, the economic viability of a potential medical-cannabis related business in Greece was evaluated based upon a financial analysis. Yields were increased in greenhouses with double plastic cover materials (compared to the control). According to the results of our comparative economic analysis the production of medical cannabis in greenhouses constructed with double layered cover materials would significantly increase profits. Finally, greenhouse medical-cannabis production is much promising in Greece. Nevertheless, the use of appropriate greenhouse cover materials should be considered as they affect THC yield and therefore, the profit of the company.

A greenhouse cannabis cultivation took place in Agriculture university of Athens in order to quantify the efficiency of beneficial insects as a main method of pest management. Cannabis plants grown in two greenhouses and beneficial insects were released only in one greenhouse as a means to investigate the efficacy against pests by the comparison with the control greenhouse. Measurements included the visual estimation of infestation, the recording of pest species and populations, and the comparison of infestations and yields amongst greenhouses. Our results indicate that beneficial insects could control pest populations up to 100%. Even though the environmental conditions were not optimal and consecutive pest infestations were observed throughout the duration of our study, the beneficial insects successfully managed the pest populations. In conclusion, biological control with beneficial insects is a very effective method for pest management in greenhouse cannabis production.

A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted in Western Greece in order to evaluate the effect of different nitrogen rates on the development of the root system and productivity of chia (Salvia hispanica L.) plant. The experiment followed a completely randomized design (CRD), with six treatments, different rates of applied nitrogen (0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 kg ha-1 equivalent to 0, 134, 268, 402, 536 and 670 mg nitrogen pot-1). The results of this study showed that root length density (RLD) and root mass density (RMD) increased with the increased rate of applied nitrogen and the highest values (1.297 cm cm-3 and 1.178 mg cm-3, respectively) were found after the application of 670 mg nitrogen pot-1 at 100 days after sowing (DAS). Plant height (106.06 cm) and leaf area per plant (883.14 cm2) were significantly affected by the highest rate of nitrogen. Additionally, dry matter and seed yield per plant were clearly affected by fertilization, with the highest values (27.57 g and 4.20 g, respectively) obtained in plants treated with 670 mg nitrogen pot-1. In conclusion, increasing the levels of applied nitrogen up to 670 mg N pot-1 improves root development and therefore the yields of chia.

Conventional agricultural has a significant role in climate change. For this reason, farmers choose more innovative practices such as fertilizers inhibitors. Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum) is the most cultivated winter crop in the Mediterranean basin. The scope of this study is to determine the improvement of the fertilizer yield by adding nitrification (DMPSA) and urease (NBPT) inhibitor in urea in durum wheat crop. Meridiano variety was evaluated for one growing period through 2019–2020 under two basic fertilization (20-20-0 and 12-40-0 (+10S +Zn). The experiments were designed according to split-plot design, 2 main plots (basic fertilization) and 7 subplots (top fertilization). The top fertilization were the various urea combination treatments (urea, urea + urease inhibitor thiophosphoric-triamide (NBPT) (UI), urea + nitrogen inhibitor 3,4- dimethylpyrazole succinic (DMPSA) and control. Nitrogen markers, such as nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), nitrogen harvest index and nitrogen agronomic efficiency (NAE) were used to evaluate nitrogen release. The length of the inflorescences was over 20 cm for all fertilizations. Regarding basic fertilization, larger inflorescences were recorded with 12-40-0 (+10S +Zn). The grain protein content and nitrogen were higher by 1-2% under basic basic fertilization 20-20-0. Grain and biomass production were increased with both fertilizers’ inhibitors (NBPT and DMPSA). Between two inhibitors, urease inhibitor (NBPT) yielded higher than DMPSA.

The present study was focused on evaluating the effect of AMF (Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi) inoculation on nitrogen and phosphorus uptake efficiency and productivity of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) crop, under different fertilization levels on organic or conventional cropping systems. The 2-year field experiment was conducted in central Greece and laid out in a split-plot design, with three replications, two main plots (AMF inoculation treatments) and five sub-plots (fertilization treatments). The results demonstrated that plants of AMF inoculated plots exhibited greater plant height, leaf area index (LAI), leading to higher biomass, and consequently higher final seed yields. Regarding the quality parameters, including nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) uptake and their utilization indices, similar results to those of the productivity results were found with the AMF inoculated plants presented the higher values. Finally, all the parameters of the root system, including AMF root colonization and weighted mycorrhizal dependency (WMD), were negatively affected by fertilization level, particularly in an inorganic form. As a conclusion, the current study confirmed that replacement of inorganic inputs by organic in combination with AMF inoculation, should be seriously considered as a sustainable practice of faba bean crop cultivation under Mediterranean conditions.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) constitute a ubiquitous group of soil microorganisms, affecting plant and soil microorganism growth. Various crop management practices can have a significant impact on the AM association. This study investigated the AMF inoculation contribution on growth and productivity of two-rowed barley crop by identifying the underlying mechanisms both in conventional and organic cropping systems. A two-year field trial was set up as a split-plot design with 2 main plots [AMF inoculation: with (AMF+) and without (AMF−)] and five sub-plots (fertilization regimes: untreated, 100% recommended dose of fertilizer in organic and inorganic form, and 60% recommended dose of fertilizer in organic and inorganic form) in three replications. According to the results, AMF+ plants presented higher plant height and leaf area index (LAI), resulting in increased biomass and, as a result, higher seed yield. With regard to the quality traits, including the nitrogen and phosphorus uptake and their utilization indices, the AMF inoculated plants showed higher values. Furthermore, the level of fertilization, particularly in an inorganic form, adversely affected AMF root colonization. Consequently, it was concluded that substitution of inorganic inputs by organic, as well as inputs reduction, when combined with AMF inoculation, can produce excellent results, thus making barley crop cultivation sustainable in Mediterranean climates.

The current study aimed to assess the impacts of fertilization and plant density on fixed oil content, oil yield, and fatty acids profile of Nigella sativa L. under Mediterranean environment. The 3-year experiment was set up in a split-plot design with three replications, two main plots (plant densities: 200 and 300 plants m-2) and four sub-plots (fertilization treatments: control, seaweed compost, farmyard manure and inorganic fertilizer). The seed yield, fixed oil content, as well as the fixed oil yield were positively affected by the increase of available nitrogen and negatively by the increase of plant density, with their highest values recorded in the low-density and inorganic fertilization. Regarding the composition in fatty acids, it was found that with the increase of plant density there was a decrease in saturated (SAFA: myristic, palmitic and stearic acid) and polyunsaturated (PUFA: linoleic, α-linolenic and eicosadenoic acid) fatty acids, while there was an increase in oleic acid which was the only monounsaturated fatty acid detected in fixed oil. In terms of fertilization, the organic fertilizers were the ones that contributed positively to the content of the respective fatty acid. As a conclusion, plant densities greater than 200 plants m-2 result in lower seed yield, fixed oil content and yield, whereas the effect of inorganic fertilization was equally important in seed and fixed oil yield; however, when the seed and/or its fixed oil are utilized for their high medicinal and nutritional value, the application of compost is indicated, resulting in a significant increase in the content of PUFAs, characterized for their beneficial effects on human health.

Due to the pressures imposed by climate change, the European Union (EU) has been forced to design several initiatives (the Common Agricultural Policy, the European Green Deal, Farm to Fork) to tackle the climate crisis and ensure food security. Through these initiatives, the EU aspires to mitigate the adverse effects of the climate crisis and achieve collective prosperity for humans, animals, and the environment. The adoption or promotion of crops that would facilitate the attaining of these objectives is naturally of high importance. Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) is a multipurpose crop with many applications in the industrial, health, and agri-food sectors. This crop is mainly grown for its fibers or its seed and has recently gained increasing attention. The literature suggests that flax can be grown in several parts of the EU, and potentially has a relatively low environmental impact. The aim of the present review is to: (i) briefly present the uses, needs, and utility of this crop and, (ii) assess its potential within the EU by taking into account the sustainability goals the EU has set via its current policies.

Camelina [Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz] oilseed cake has been identified as an alternative protein feedstuff and as a valuable feed resource. Moreover, over the last decades, there has been an increased interest in the organic production of feed supplements. A 2-year field experiment was conducted in a split-plot design with three replications, two main plots (conventional tillage: moldboard ploughing at 25 cm followed by rotary hoeing at 10–15 cm, and minimum tillage: chiseling at 25 cm depth followed by rotary hoeing at 10–15 cm), and three sub-plots (organic fertilization type: untreated, vermicompost, and compost) to evaluate the fertilization and tillage system effect on the yield and quality of cold-pressed camelina seed cake. Seed yield and cake yield were only affected by organic fertilization, with the highest values observed in the compost treatment. Crude protein was influenced by both factors examined, and the greatest content was found under conventional tillage and compost application. As for the fatty acid composition of oilseed cake, this can be characterized as a major source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (~52% of total FAs), particularly linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid, which were only affected by fertilization, with the highest values found after compost application. To conclude, the cold-pressed cake from camelina seed cultivated under compost fertilization and conventional tillage appears to be an effective alternative to conventionally used protein feed ingredients.

Durum wheat is used as raw material for many foods. Climate change might be responsible for larger or smaller changes in crop yields. For the combined assessment of climate and crop, growing degree days (GDDs) have a crucial role. Two experimental lines and twelve commercial wheat (Triticum durum) varieties from diverse backgrounds were cultivated to compare their crop properties, yield, and protein content in terms of GDDs. The experiment was established in typical Mediterranean environment, using a randomized complete block design with blocks of varieties and lines for two growing seasons. For all varieties, GDDs to head emergence was affected by factor year, whereas GDDs from head emergence to harvest were influenced by both varieties and year. Protein content (%) was not affected by genotypes. Factor of variety and interaction variety × year had an impact on vitreousness; it was ranged from 79.75 % (‘Makaras’ variety) to 44.00 % (‘Levante’ variety). Yield had no statistically significant difference among varieties/lines. In durum wheat cultivation, up to head emergence, when GDDs increased, yield would be declined in contrast to GDDs from emergence to harvest; with the increasing of GDDs to harvest, yield was climbed. Nowadays, the integrations of and interpretation of GDDs in the evaluation of crop performance seem vital.

Physalis peruviana L. is an Andean Solanaceae fruit crop with great nutraceutical qualities, potential health benefits and adaptability to Mediterranean climates. In the current study, a first approach on the effect of organic and inorganic fertilization on P. peruviana crop under Mediterranean semi-arid conditions was performed. A field experiment was laid out according to a completely randomized design, with three replicates and three fertilization treatments [untreated (control), organic fertilization (biocyclic humus soil) and inorganic fertilization (inorganic fertilizer 40-0-0+14.5 SO3)]. Phenological growth stages and their corresponded growing degree days were evaluated. In addition, some growth parameters, fruit yield and yield components were evaluated. The results indicated that the duration of phenological growth stages was in accordance with durations mentioned in tropical climate. The highest branches number per plant (24.4), leaf area per plant (1997.3 cm2), fruit number per plant (41.52), fruit yield (7.51 t ha-1) and average fruit weight (5.32 g) were found in inorganic fertilization plots, whereas the highest plant height (44.15 g) and fruit diameter (12.52 mm) were recorded under organic fertilization; however, the differences between the organic and inorganic fertilization were not statistically significant. In terms of dry weight per plant, there were significant differences among the fertilization treatment with the values obtained under inorganic fertilization (81.24 g). To sum up, P. peruviana showed satisfying adaptability under Mediterranean climate conditions and has great potential in becoming an alternative cultivation for small and medium producers of Mediterranean countries. In addition, the results indicated that organic fertilization (with biocyclic humus soil) should be considered as an alternative to inorganic fertilizers for P. peruviana production.

The effect of the reflection by a white agrotextile, in hemp cultivation, was evaluated on a greenhouse experiment during 2019. The experiments were laid out in a completely randomized design with two treatments (soil cover and control). The results indicated that the average temperature in the covered area section was 28.5ºC while in the uncovered area was 25.12ºC, during the experiment. Concerning height, higher plants up to 20 cm, were recorded on the covered area than the uncovered one. The highest specific leaf area (SLA) (58.39 cm2 g-1) was found on the covered area at 60 days after transplanting (DAT) compared to the uncovered area where a value of 50.4 cm2 g-1 was recorded. The absolute growth rate was higher during 20-60 DAT comparatively to control. The highest rate was observed about 50-60 DAT where it reached the value of 3.34 g day-1. Concerning root system, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) was only affected by the cover material. The number of inflorescences was not found to be affected by the cover material but the bud length and the cannabidiol (CBD) content were affected by the soil cover. The cannabinoids (CBD) content was 28.8% higher on covered area.

In order to define the finest cultivation practices for two of the most commercial hemp cultivars (‘Fedora 23’ and ‘Futura 75’) under the Mediterranean climate, the treatment of topping was applied in hemp crop in Central Greece. The object of the study was to assess if topping can increase the cannabidiol (CBD) production. In addition, the growth of the two cultivars was also investigated. Our results showed that the treatment of topping and cultivar affected the CBD content. The inflorescence compactness index and the number of nodes were affected by cultivar and topping. The number of inflorescences on secondary shoots was affected only by topping. The leaf area was affected by the interaction of cultivar and topping. The maximum height was recorded in un-topped Futura 75 plants, while the highest fresh and dry weight were found in topped Futura 75 plants. The total inflorescence dry matter was higher in topped plants.

Nigella sativa L. is considered to be an alternative crop offering innovative and high-quality products. A case study was implemented on an existing farm to determine the prospects of N. sativa production in Greece and to assess the economic outcomes of the cultivation of this crop under organic and conventional cropping systems. The total production cost of organic N. sativa seeds was 6.09 €/kg, while the cost of conventional seeds was 4.77 €/kg. The organic and conventional N. sativa seed selling prices were 17.04 and 12.01 €/kg, respectively. Moreover, the financial performance of farm is better after the introduction of N. sativa crop under organic cropping system, where the net profit increased by 63.8% compared to the initial profit of the farm, while the increase in the conventional was less at 49.2%. N

In recent years, cannabis has raised public awareness in many countries worldwide about its medical uses. The European cannabis market reached its peak during 2018 with investments of 500 million €. Greece introduced Law 4523/2018, which regulates the production and processing of medical cannabis. A start-up business plan was drawn up for a medical cannabis operation owned a 1 ha greenhouse to estimate the start-up costs and the costs of cultivating and processing medical cannabis under greenhouse conditions in Greece. The results of the present study revealed that the investment was estimated at 4,960,044 €. Net profit in the first year amounted to 3,584,621.70 €, while the annual net profits from the second to the tenth year amounted to approximately 7.07 billion. The Net Present Value with a value of 45,425,241.24 € is positive and the internal rate of return (IRR) is 94.14%, which means that the investment can be characterized as profitable.

Organic farming encourages the use of organic waste materials as substitutes for chemical fertilizers. Tomato pomace presents an alternative to inorganic fertilizer. A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the influence of tomato pomace composts and nitrogen fertilization on agronomic and quality parameters of the processing tomato. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications and five fertilization treatments (untreated, nitrogen fertilizer, tomato pomace with biocyclic humus soil, tomato pomace with manure and tomato pomace with plant residues). The results showed that the highest average fruit weight and fruit yield (163.4 t/ha) were found in plots subjected to nitrogen fertilization, while the highest total soluble solids content (4.29 °Brix), and L* and a* colour parameters, important quality parameters to processing tomato industry, were obtained through the application of tomato pomace mixed with biocyclic humus soil making organic tomatoes suitable for processing tomato industry.

The cannabis plant was discovered 10,000 years ago without its exact use being known in China and Central Asia. Equally highly interested in this plant are the pharmaceutical and construction sectors. The cultivation of Cannabis sativa L. varieties containing more than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has been legalized by the law 4523/2018 in Greece for the sole purpose of producing end-products of medicinal cannabis. The use of medicinal cannabis is important for dealing with chronic diseases. As far as cannabis cultivated for industrial use is concerned, there is a significant increase in the secondary services sector. The resulting fibers are used for the manufacture of ropes etc. Especially CBD is of great interest. Through surveys carried out by the Agronomy Laboratory of Agricultural University of Athens regarding the development of cannabis by applying geotextiles, radiation management, cannabidiol (CBD) content and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), statistical data have been compiled for cannabis cultivation both pharmaceutical and textile. On the basis of the results, cannabis can be grown in Greece due to the weather conditions and, above all, sunshine, which is the main factor for the development of the plant.

Achieving Food Security (FS) is perhaps our most challenging aspiration. Despite our best efforts, millions of people around the globe are malnourished or live with hunger. The state of the geo-political scene, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, have recently brought forth fears of a Global Food Crisis (GFC). Here, we present the factors that threaten FS and could trigger a GFC, examine the potential of alternative crops (ACs) as a measure against an upcoming GFC, and highlight the key aspects of the ACs introduction process in new regions. ACs could enhance FS, yet their success is premised on the adoption of sustainable practices and the implementation of food strategies that aim to promote healthy consumer behaviours.

The Lakes Amvrakia and Ozeros (W. Greece) belong to the western chain of Greek wetlands running along the coast of the Ionian Sea. They are both natural lakes belonging to the Natura 2000, Site of Community Importance (pSCI) and are characterized by high ecological value. Wet meadows are typical habitat types of these wetland ecosystems which are in contact with rural ecosystems which they interact with. Due to the high conservation value of these habitat types, in the framework of this study the flora of the wet meadows was recorded and a floristic analysis concerning chorology, life forms and habitat preferences was made. A total number of 152 taxa was found in the wet meadows of both lakes from which only 47 taxa were common. The families with the greatest number of species were Fabaceae (22 taxa), Asteraceae (14 taxa) and Poaceae (9 taxa) for the wet meadow vegetation of the Lake Amvrakia and Fabaceae, Poaceae (17 and 13 taxa, respectively) for the Lake Ozeros. In both lakes the prevalence of the Therophytes is evident, while the life forms of Chamephytes and Aquatics were absent from the Lake Amvrakia. From the results of the canonical correspondence analysis among species, sampling plots and selected environmental variables, a clear separation between species and sampling plots was found, presenting strong correlation with specific edaphic parameters (pH, CaCO3, EC, , Total N, SOC and ). These edaphic properties, as a result of natural and anthropogenic interventions, seem to play an important role in the wet meadows plant species distribution pattern.

Black mustard [Brassica nigra (L.) Koch] is mainly cultivated as a seed crop, and there is a lack of information on biomass quality and its potential for animal feeding. A 2-year field experiment was set up in a split-plot design with 2 main plots (plant densities: 46 and 76 plants m−2), 4 sub-plots (fertilization levels: control, compost, urea with and without urease and nitrification inhibitors) and 3 replications for each treatment. The highest dry matter yield (17.55–18.34 tn ha−1) was observed in high-density plots fertilized with urea fertilizer coated with double (nitrification and urease) inhibitors. In terms of the qualitive parameters of total above-ground biomass, the highest crude protein (CP) content was achieved in plots with low density and urea with double inhibitors. Moreover, the highest neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents of above-ground biomass were found under compost and urea with double inhibitors. The high ADF, NDF and relatively high CP content characterized that black mustard aerial biomass can meet the requirements of lactating animals, and therefore the production of black mustard biomass as a forage crop could be of great importance. As a conclusion, black mustard cultivated at plant densities higher than 46 plants m−2 and under inorganic fertilization, especially with urea coated with double inhibitors, could be successfully used as a novel forage crop in ruminants’ diets.

An economic analysis of conventional and organic olive oil cultivation was examined in one of the most important olive-growing regions in Greece. Based on structured interviews and open-ended questions of 60 farmers from both organic and conventional systems, this study aimed to clarify the cost and returns of organic olive oil cultivation in comparison with conventional farming. Olive oil cultivation cost was calculated as 2.60 € kg-1 in organic and 2.25 € kg-1 in conventional system. The selling price for organic olive production was 4.19 € kg-1 compared to 3.63 € kg-1 for conventional production. Net profit from organic olive oil cultivation was 7,043.43 € ha-1, which was 3,664.58 € ha-1 higher than the net profit from conventional cultivation. Finally, in both types of olive farming the results of financial analysis attested to a positive convenience; however, organic farming is more advantageous providing a financially competitive alternative to conventional.

Teff is an annual grass originated in Ethiopia, grown for both human food and animal feed. Salinity and moisture stress are the main limiting factors of agricultural development on arid and semi-arid regions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of salinity due to NaCl on germination of teff. A set of experiments was conducted under a completely randomized design with four replications of 200 seeds at two different suboptimal germination temperatures (15 and 25 °C) in the dark for 10 days. In order to create salt stress conditions during the germination process, seven solutions were used (0 as control, 80, 160, 240 and 320, 400 and 480 mM NaCl). The germination performance was evaluated by final germination percentage and mean germination time. The presence of NaCl reduced germination, especially above 240 mM for 15 °C and 400 mM for 25 °C. The mean germination time increased with higher NaCl levels.

The floating system is a promising alternative type of hydroponic seedling production system, which has not been much studied and disseminated in the flower industry. This study aimed to produce seedlings of Zinnia elegans in a floating system and to evaluate the influence of two organic (Codaphos & Codasting and Fish-Fert) and one inorganic nutrient solution formulations on the seedling growth parameters. Z. elegans seeds germinated at a high rate (76.6-82.1%) in all fertilization treatments with a T50 ranging from 9.54 to 10.50 days. Application of Codaphos and Codasting (organic fertilizer containing N- Codasting and P+K- Codaphos) in floating system resulted in better development of the aboveground parts and roots of seedlings comparing with the other organic and the inorganic fertilization. As a conclusion, the present study showed that organic fertilization, especially with Codaphos and Codasting, could successfully be used for the production of Z. elegans seedlings in a floating system; however, further studies must be carried out on this aspect.

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of biocyclic humus soil, a newly found apparently carbon stabilized form of organic matter with significantly different characteristics from common composts or other forms of organic matter (humus), on yield and quality of processing tomato. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications and three fertilization treatments (untreated, inorganic fertilizer and biocyclic humus soil). The highest fruit yield (116.8 t/ha) was obtained by using biocyclic humus soil. There were no treatment effects on fruit firmness (4.34-4.60 kg/cm2), total soluble solids (4.29-4.76 °Brix) and total acidity (0.25-0.31 g citric acid/100 g fruit) content of fruits. In conclusion, the tomato plants grown in biocyclic humus soil had 45% more yield than in conventional plots, and this big difference is probably related to the fact that the humus soil as a substrate provides an optimum environment for plant growth.
