The subject of this book is employment policy and its contribution to tackling unemployment. It seeks to familiarize students with the difficulties of measuring unemployment, the diversity of the phenomenon, its unequal distribution in social groups, its theoretical interpretations, and the policies used to deal with it. It then aims to introduce students to the principles of planning, implementing, and evaluating employment policies. The first part of the book will be devoted to the conceptual approaches to unemployment and to the overview of the main economic theories of unemployment, from which the different types of unemployment and political employment derive and the related typologies. The second part will examine the different types of political employment, their expected effects and effectiveness concerning the objectives they are called to achieve, as well as the changing mix of political employment in economically developed countries in different historical periods. The third part will delve deeper into the concept of public policy, focusing on employment policy and in particular on the planning, implementation, and evaluation processes of public interventions in the labor market. Finally, in the fourth part, a critical overview of the European and Greek employment policy will be carried out to "ground" the previous theoretical and technical parts of the book with the applied employment policy, its objectives, means, and tools, in the changing European and Greek reality of the labor market in the last twenty-five years., Το βιβλίο έχει ως αντικείμενο την πολιτική απασχόλησης και τη συμβολή της στην αντιμετώπιση της ανεργίας. Επιδιώκει να εξοικειώσει τους φοιτητές με τις δυσκολίες μέτρησης της ανεργίας, την πολυμορφία του φαινομένου, την άνιση κατανομή του στις κοινωνικές ομάδες, τις θεωρητικές του ερμηνείες και τις πολιτικές που χρησιμοποιούνται για την αντιμετώπισή του. Στη συνέχεια αποσκοπεί στο να εισάγει τους φοιτητές στις αρχές σχεδιασμού, υλοποίησης και αξιολόγησης των πολιτικών απασχόλησης. Το πρώτο μέρος του βιβλίου θα είναι αφιερωμένο στις εννοιολογικές προσεγγίσεις της ανεργίας και στην επισκόπηση των κύριων οικονομικών θεωριών της ανεργίας, από τις οποίες απορρέουν τα διαφορετικά είδη ανεργίας και πολιτικής απασχόλησης και οι σχετικές τυπολογίες. Στο δεύτερο μέρος θα εξεταστούν τα διαφορετικά είδη πολιτικής απασχόλησης, οι αναμενόμενες επιδράσεις και η αποτελεσματικότητα τους σε σχέση με τους στόχους που καλούνται να επιτύχουν, καθώς και το μεταβαλλόμενο μείγμα της πολιτικής απασχόλησης στις οικονομικά αναπτυγμένες χώρες σε διαφορετικές ιστορικές περιόδους. Το τρίτο μέρος θα εμβαθύνει στην έννοια της δημόσιας πολιτικής, επικεντρώνοντας στην πολιτική απασχόλησης και ειδικότερα στις διαδικασίες σχεδιασμού, υλοποίησης και αξιολόγησης των δημόσιων παρεμβάσεων στην αγορά εργασίας. Τέλος, στο τέταρτο μέρος θα πραγματοποιηθεί μια κριτική επισκόπηση της ευρωπαϊκής και της ελληνικής πολιτικής απασχόλησης με σκοπό να «γειωθούν» τα προηγούμενα θεωρητικά και τεχνικά μέρη του βιβλίου με την εφαρμοσμένη πολιτική απασχόλησης, τους στόχους, τα μέσα και τα εργαλεία της, στη μεταβαλλόμενη ευρωπαϊκή και ελληνική πραγματικότητα της αγοράς εργασίας την τελευταία εικοσιπενταετία.

Η παρούσα διατριβή αναλύει θεωρητικά τα δέντρα εξάρτησης ως κατανομές πιθανότητας και την χρήση τους στην αναγνώριση μοτίβων σε εικόνες. Επίσης εξετάζονται πιθανές εφαρμογές των δέντρων εξάρτησης ως χρήσιμων συντακτικών πληροφοριών σε προβλήματα όπως αυτό της εξεύρεσης απαντήσεων σε ερωτήσεις (Q/A), αναπτύσσοντας έναν αλγόριθμο. Πλην της εφαρμογής τους στο πεδίο των ερωτήσεων/απαντήσεων, θα μελετηθεί η χρησιμότητα τους στην Μηχανική Μετάφραση και ιδίως στην συντακτική στατιστική μηχανική μετάφραση. Στο πεδίο της στατιστικής μηχανικής μετάφρασης θα μελετηθούν μοντελοποιήσεις των δέντρων εξάρτησης σε γλώσσες που παρουσιάζουν ισομορφισμούς και σε περιπτώσεις στις οποίες δεν υπάρχουν. Τέλος θα συμπεριληφθεί και ένα κομμάτι ανάλυσης-δημιουργίας μιας μοντελοποίησης διασύνδεσης ενός δέντρου εξάρτησης με ένα σημασιολογικό δέντρο εξάρτησης. Περίληψη: Εισαγωγή γραμματικών κανόνων αλλά και των χρονικών τροποποιητών. Η μέθοδος της άμεσης αντιστοιχίας (DCA) η οποία βασίζεται σε εμπειρικές μελέτες και αξιοποιείται σε περιπτώσεις όπου η μία γλώσσα πλειοψηφεί έναντι της άλλης αποπειράται να δημιουργήσει ισομορφικά μοντέλα, δηλαδή προτάσεις ίδιας μορφής μεταξύ των γλωσσών. Η αποτελεσματικότητα των προαναφερθέντων μεθόδων έχει αποδειχτεί αλλά ανακρίβειες εξακολουθούν να υπάρχουν. Τέλος, γίνεται αναφορά στα Σημασιολογικά Δέντρα Εξάρτησης τα οποία περιγράφουν τις σχέσεις μεταξύ κατηγορήματος και ορίσματος σε μια πρόταση με τη χρήση τόξων. Συνοψίζοντας, τα δέντρα εξάρτησης έχουν αποδειχθεί πολύτιμα στην εξεύρεση και επιλογή μίας κατάλληλης απάντησης μέσα από ένα πλήθος πιθανών λύσεων αλλά περεταίρω έρευνα και βελτιστοποίηση των μεθόδων απαιτούνται έτσι ώστε τα αποτελέσματα των μεταφράσεων να γίνουν πιο ακριβή και να είναι σε θέση να ανταγωνιστούν την ποιότητα των ανθρώπινων μεταφραστών.

Background: Targeted therapies (TTs) have revolutionised cancer treatment with their enhanced specificity of action. Compared with conventional therapies, TTs are delivered over a longer period and often have unusual symptom profiles. Patient-reported outcome measures such as symptom side-effect lists need to be developed in a time-efficient manner to enable a rapid and full evaluation of new treatments and effective clinical management Objective: The aim of this study was to develop a set of TT-related symptoms and identify the optimal method for developing symptom lists. Patients and Methods: Symptoms from TT treatment in the context of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML), HER2-positive breast cancer, or Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumours (GIST) were identified through literature reviews, interviews with healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients, and patient focus groups. The symptom set was then pilot tested in patients across the three cancer diagnoses: The number of items derived from each source (literature, patients, or HCPs) were compared. Results: A total of 316 patients and 86 HCPs from 16 countries participated. An initial set of 209 symptoms was reduced to 61 covering 12 symptom categories. Patient interviews made the greatest contribution to the item set. Conclusions: Symptom lists should be created based on input from patients. The item set described will be applicable to the assessment of new TTs, and in monitoring treatment.

Cloud computing has been experiencing sharp development over the last years, leading to an increased demand for application migration to the cloud. Cloud providers, in an effort to attract more customers and earn their confidence, offer to tenants the illusion of an isolated network, exposing familiar abstractions. At the same time, creating this illusion poses challenging problems for the providers, as one tenant's traffic may interfere with another's in complicated, unpredictable ways. First, new challenges have arisen in administering access-control rules (ACLs). On the one hand, installing ACLs at the server is incompatible with bare-metal support and introduces unnecessary performance overhead. On the other hand, offloading the most popular ACLs on the limited hardware memory in Top-of-Rack (ToR) switches should not be conducted naïvely, as the existence of wildcard rules presents inter-rule dependencies that must be respected. Second, tenants' demands have evolved beyond requesting hardware resources; for instance, tenants may require bandwidth provisions between their resources or optimized access to a specific cloud service, e.g., a Mail server or a Database. Cloud providers have not adequately adapted to these expanding demands, therefore elevating hardware resources to "first class citizens," as non-hardware constraints are not considered during resource allocation, instead they are applied afterwards. In this thesis we propose two architectures that facilitate cloud providers in managing their shared network resources in a flexible way. First, we demonstrate virtual flow tables, a ToR architecture that handles ACLs using a two-level memory hierarchy. The most popular ACLs are stored in the limited hardware memory, respecting any dependencies between wildcard rules, while the ToR's supervisor engine maintains access to the entire ACL rule-set. Second, we present a two-tiered architecture for scheduling cloud resources, consisting of a resource-agnostic scheduling layer and a resource-specific enforcement layer. Network resources and constraints are taken into consideration during resource scheduling, instead of afterwards, while resource provisioning, as well as general network-management policies, are delegated to the resource-specific tier.
