Background and aim. This study aims at emphasizing specific aspects of prosthetic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis patients that are completely edentulous. Material and method. In December 2023, a search was conducted through three medical databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Results. Concerning their unique signs and symptoms, the management of edentulous patients with rheumatoid arthritis with removable dentures has several unique features throughout the clinical stages. Some patients have difficulty keeping dental appointments from the initial phase of treatment due to mobility issues, particularly in severe forms where several joints are impacted, resulting in stiffness that can restrict the ability to move. In such situations, the dental professional must insist on a thorough examination of the oral tissues that are going to sustain the prosthetic device or come into its proximity. In cases in which temporomandibular joint damage limits mouth opening, it can also be challenging to examine the denture’s supporting tissues and take impressions because rheumatoid arthritis patients have been shown to have modifications in the joint’s elements and function. Conclusion. To improve the outcomes and overall well-being of rheumatoid arthritis patients who are completely edentulous, it is essential to thoroughly consider the options for treatment when utilizing prosthetic devices and additional therapies.

Introduction. Dental students' considerations on the causes of treatment failure is an important issue for the teachers in understanding their medical reasoning. The research analyzed a broad variety of probable causes and contributing factors for complete denture failure that could concern both the patient and the dentist. The method ensured a thorough investigation of the factors that could affect complete denture treatment outcomes. Method. A questionnaire-based investigation was done among 50 dental students in their last year of Dental Medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Iuliu Hatieganu” Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The subjects, both males and females, ranged between 24 to 45 years and were all in their final year of study. They were randomly chosen to represent a wide range of subjects. Results. The findings revealed that a vast majority of participants, 72%, believed the patient's psychological profile and mental state were key factors in complete denture failure. Inaccurate determination of the jaw relationships was the most significant factor contributing to complete denture failure regarding challenges associated with the fabrication process, according to the respondents (28%). Conclusions. The majority of respondents thought that patient-related factors, particularly those involving the patient's emotions and psychological profile, were the most important in the failure of complete dentures. Proper assessment of the jaw relations and occlusal deficiencies were the main variables when assessing the reasons for complete denture failures related to the fabrication process.

Background/Objectives: Osteoporosis is a common general disease that mostly affects the skeletal system, including the jawbone. There is a link between systemic and mandibular osteoporosis. This study aimed at assessing the association between systemic (lumbar spine L1–L4, femoral neck, total hip) bone mineral density (BMD) and mandible BMD sites in Romanian postmenopausal females. Methods: A total of 97 menopausal patients were studied, 62 with osteoporosis and 35 females with no osteoporosis. For each patient, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) assessments of BMD in the mandible, proximal femur, total hip, and lumbar spine (L1–L4) were performed. Mandibular measurements were performed using the distal forearm software, followed by manual analysis after the bone contour was defined in each case. Results: Comparing the osteoporosis and control groups, there were significant differences in BMD at each examined location. The mandibular BMD (1.125 ± 0.181506 g/cm2) in the osteoporosis group was considerably smaller than in the control group (1.35497 ± 0.244397 g/cm2). Correlations between the BMD at different sites were significant: lumbar spine and femoral neck (r = 0.738, p < 0.0001), lumbar spine and total hip (r = 0.735, p < 0.0001), lumbar spine and mandible (r = 0.506, p < 0.0001), femoral neck and total hip (r = 0.891, p < 0.0001), femoral neck and mandible (r = 0.482, p < 0.0001), and total hip and mandible (r = 0.466, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: There were correlations between mandible BMD and lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip BMD, suggesting that osteoporosis affects mandibular bone density. BMD assessments at common locations may help predict mandibular BMD and the probability of osteoporosis.

Aim of the study The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on dentistry education in Cluj-Napoca County, Romania, by studying the post-pandemic effect upon medical education and lifestyle changes of dentistry students. Material and methods We conducted an experimental study aimed at associating some of the factors related to post-pandemic situation in dental students: stress, social status, the way the COVID 19 affected study type and characteristics or clinical practice, lifestyle changes, if social life or way of thinking has changed after the pandemic. A self-developed questionnaire, in English language, with no private identifiable information was used. Participation was voluntary, answers were anonymous. Statistical analysis was performed using the MedCalc version 20.110 software. Results A number of 131 participants with ages ranging between 20 to 40 years (mean age=24.2±2.9) completed the questionnaire. There were participants from France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Italy, Norway, Romania, Syria, Tunisia, United Kingdom, USA. There was an impact of COVID upon studies, the following issues being reported: less practice, social distancing, lack of patients, online classes instead of on-site ones, missing practical activities, procrastination increase, time for study but lack of time to practice the theoretical issues, no hands-on experience, stress and panic, burnout, afraid of a potential infection in classes after the pandemic. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic did influence dental students’ studies; studying dentistry and dental technology online is challenging; lifestyle changes have been noticed in the post-pandemic period.

Osteoporosis is more common in women, particularly after menopause and may be associated with oral health alterations. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between periodontal disease and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Materials and method: During 2018-2020, 97 menopausal patients were studied, aged between 47 and 76 years: (1) with osteoporosis, mean age 62.42±7.85 years and (2) control group without osteoporosis, mean age 56.80±7.00 years. In group (1), the regions of interest were lumbar spine (L1-L4), proximal femur and mandible. (1) Background: This study aimed to perform a literature review related to disk displacement (DD) in class II malocclusion or cervical vertebrae position alterations and to report a hypodivergent case with cervical pain and right anterolateral DD with reduction, left anterolateral DD with reduction, and left joint effusion. (2) Methods: A structured electronic search was conducted between March 2022 and April 2022, without time limits, following PRISMA guidelines, in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane; the terms “disc displacement”, “disk displacement”, “temporomandibular joint”, “class II malocclusion” and “cervical vertebrae” are searched. (3) Results: the following thirteen publications are included in this review: two prospective studies and eleven cross-sectional studies; for evaluating disk position, eight included publications used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), whilst six studies used lateral cephalogram to determine craniofacial morphology and relationships between the cranial base, vertical skeletal pattern, maxilla and mandible. (4) Conclusions: although the literature still shows contradictory opinions, a relationship between temporomandibular disorders and cervical posture has been shown in the presented case as well as in the literature review.

Background: As the human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are detected in healthy oral mucosa as well as in oral lesions, dental practitioners have an important role in detecting any possible lesions that might be caused by this virus. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the outcomes of orthodontic treatments and HPV infections and to report a rare case of ongoing orthodontic treatment superposed on an HPV infection. Methods: An electronic English literature research of the articles published between the years 2011–2021 was conducted between December 2021–February 2022, accessing PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The terms “HPV”, “orthodontics”, “orthodontic treatment”, “tooth movement”, “tooth mobility”, and “malocclusion” were searched. The following inclusion criteria were pursued: articles published in English language; studies reporting HPV infection in subjects with past or ongoing orthodontic treatment; and case reports of subjects with HPV and orthodontic treatment. Exclusion criteria were: articles in languages other than English, studies related to malignancies other than HPV and orthodontic treatment; and studies reporting patients with HPV and no orthodontic treatment. Results: Following the systematic review, which includes six papers, a case of orthodontic treatment superposed on a HPV infection is presented. Conclusion: Incumbent, postponed HPV infection on an ongoing orthodontic treatment might affect treatment outcome and patient compliance.
