The macrophyte Egeria densa Planchon, 1849 is a freshwater plant native to the subtropical regions of South America. Fast vegetative reproduction and efficient dispersal allow this species to form extensive beds that produce high levels of oxygen in freshwater ecosystems, generating microhabitats that act as refuge and nursery for an array of organisms, increasing sedimentation and light availability. Despite its undisputable ecological role, it is considered invasive and is present on all continents except Antarctica with the first records in Europe occurring at the 20th century. At the international Minho River (NW Iberian Peninsula), the observation of its presence was noted in the 1990s and is now an established population in this ecosystem. This study is the first descriptive-taxonomical assessment of the associated fauna with the exotic macrophyte E. densa, using both morphological and molecular approaches, three decades after its establishment in the international Minho River. Results indicate the presence of a faunal assemblage, composed a total of 20 identified species, including platyhelminths, hydrozoans, bryozoans, molluscs (Gastropoda), annelids (Oligochaeta and Hirudinea), crustaceans (Ostracoda, Copepoda, Branchiopoda and Amphipoda), aquatic mites and insects. Paludicella aff. articulata (Ehrenberg, 1831), Girardia sinensis Chen & Wang, 2015, Lebertia insignis Neuman, 1880 and Ceriodaphnia rigaudi Richard 1894 are recorded for the first time in Portugal. Andean wetlands in arid climates are isolated ecosystems surrounded by steep terrain and have crucial relevance as a water resource. The species inhabiting them are adapted to these habitats and vulnerable to environmental changes.The aim of this study is to evaluate the vulnerability of invertebrate aquatic species to climate change and organic pollution through an index adapted from the species distributional models (SDM) score [vulnerability of aquatic invertebrate species index (Vais)], and the vulnerability of the invertebrate communities through an index developed herein [wetland community vulnerability index (Wcv)].The Vais index ranges from 1 (highly vulnerable) to 0 (non‐vulnerable species). It was calculated for 22 species of the orders Coleoptera, Ephemeroptera, Hemiptera, and Odonata. According to our results, the most vulnerable species belong to the orders Ephemeroptera (2) and Odonata (8) (scores 0.63–0.76); species with medium vulnerability belong to the orders Coleoptera (1) Ephemeroptera (1), Hemiptera (4) and Odonata (1) (scores 0.43–0.54); and the most tolerant species belong to the orders Coleoptera (2) and Hemiptera (3) (0.31–0.29).The Wcv index was calculated for 31 communities in Andean wetlands. Lower Wcv values correspond to less vulnerable communities and higher values to more vulnerable communities. According to our results, communities can be divided into three groups: the most vulnerable (scores 0.61–0.71), the ones with medium vulnerability (scores 0.49–0.59), and the least vulnerable (scores 0.33–0.48).The Vais and Wcv indexes are useful tools for evaluating the vulnerability of aquatic species and wetland communities, providing valuable information for defining conservation strategies. Abstract This study assesses the effect of vegetation structure on the subtropical invertebrate communities in contrasting sampling dates of macrophyte populations in the RAMSAR site of Iberá wetlands, South America. Invertebrates associated with the submersed Egeria najas and the floating rooted Pontederia azurea were chosen to provide a model involving different microhabitat complexity. The results suggest that vegetation structure provided by the two macrophyte species supported significant differences in the density of animals, with invertebrate abundance of E. najas twice as high as on P. azurea. Abundance showed no significant differences in both contrasting sampling dates, growth and decline. Our result clearly showed invertebrates exclusively associated with each macrophyte species, as well different invertebrate taxa dominating in each sampling date (decline: Cladocera; growth: Aphididae, Belostomatidae and Planorbidae). We also show that working at the taxonomic levels of family could be a sensible trade-off between taxonomic identification effort versus reaching reliable and useful results for environmental monitoring and natural resource management in highly diverse subtropical wetlands. Our results emphasize the role of vegetation structure on invertebrate communities, as well suggest that the growth cycle of macrophyte populations could be a relevant variable influencing these animals in pristine subtropical wetlands.

The introduction and successful expansion of tropical species into temperate systems is being exacerbated by climate change, and it is particularly important to identify the impacts that those species may have, especially when habitat-forming species are involved. Seagrass meadows are key shallow coastal habitats that provide critical ecosystem services worldwide, and they are threatened by the arrival of non-native macroalgae. Here, we examined the effects of Halimeda incrassata, a tropical alga that has recently colonized the Mediterranean Sea, on epifaunal assemblages associated with Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadows of Mallorca Island (Western Mediterranean Sea). This invasive macroalga is an ecological engineer and thus has a high potential of modifying native habitats. A seagrass meadow colonized by H. incrassata exhibited important changes on associated epifaunal assemblages, with an increase in abundance and diversity, particularly driven by higher abundances of Gammaridae, Polychaeta, Copepoda and Caprellidae. Given the key ecological contribution of epifauna to food webs, these alterations will likely have important implications for overall food web structure and ecosystem functioning of native ecosystems.

SUMMARY: Some introduced species compete directly with native species for resources and their spread can alter communities, while others do not proliferate and remain benign. This study compares community structure and diversity in adjacent areas dominated by the introduced alga Avrainvillea sp. or native algal species on a hard substrate reef. The biomass and species composition of 15 paired plots (30 in total, plot type based on dominance of Avrainvillea sp. or native species) were quantified. Plots dominated by Avrainvillea sp. had a significantly different assemblage of species characterized by lower algal diversity, mostly Dictyota spp. and Laurencia sp., and a higher abundance and diversity of invertebrates, such as small arthropods, polychaetes, and brittlestars. These results suggest that as Avrainvillea sp. becomes more abundant on hard substrate reefs, it will engineer a different community composed of algal epiphytes and an invertebrate assemblage more typically associated with algae in soft sediments. Consumer communities play an important role in maintaining ecosystem structure and function. In seagrass systems, algal regulation by mesograzers provides a critical maintenance function which promotes seagrass productivity. Consumer communities also represent a key link in trophic energy transfer and buffer negative effects to seagrasses associated with eutrophication. Such interactions are well documented in the literature regarding temperate systems, however, it is not clear if the same relationships exist in tropical systems. This study aimed to identify if the invertebrate communities within a tropical, multispecies seagrass meadow moderated epiphyte abundance under natural conditions by comparing algal abundance across two sites at Green Island, Australia. At each site, paired plots were established where invertebrate assemblages were perturbed via insecticide manipulation and compared to unmanipulated plots. An 89% increase in epiphyte abundance was seen after six weeks of experimental invertebrate reductions within the system. Using generalised linear mixed-effect models and path analysis, we found that the abundance of invertebrates was negatively correlated with epiphyte load on seagrass leaves. Habitat species richness was seen to be positively correlated with invertebrate abundance. These findings mirrored those of temperate systems, suggesting this mechanism operates similarly across latitudinal gradients.

Water abstraction modifies the environmental conditions of stream ecosystems, which can affect invertebrate assemblages by altering drift. We examined this issue with a before-after-control-impact design experiment in which we diverted 90% of the natural flow from a headwater stream. We measured flow-reduction effects on drift densities (animals/m3), total drift rates (animals leaving the reach per hour) and net balance of invertebrates entering or leaving the Impact reach. We also identified the specific taxa and traits that drove these responses. The sudden decrease in flow promoted a 12-fold increase in overall drift density at the Impact reach, which was primarily driven by filterers, shredders and taxa associated with fast velocities, such as simulids. By contrast, drift densities of other abundant taxa, such as Baetis, Esolus and chironomids, increased less than what could be expected from the magnitude of flow reduction. While drift rates remained unchanged after water abstraction, the Impact reach became a net invertebrate exporter indicating that many taxa drifted actively as a response to stressful conditions rather than passively, which would be reduced by water abstraction. Therefore, our results suggest that water abstraction influences drift, with potentially important consequences for the invertebrate assemblages and ecosystem processes further downstream. Background: A total of 162 species and subspecies of marine macroinvertebrates were recorded in the submerged soft and hard substrates around the PERU LNG marine terminal and surrounding area, in the central coast of Peru, 167 km south of Lima, Peru. The collection of specimens was carried out from June 2011 to June 2015 as part of the research studies conducted by the Biodiversity Monitoring and Assessment Program (BMAP) around the marine terminal. The area is part of the Humboldt Current Large Marine Ecosystem, one of the most important upwelling systems in the world. New information: We identified specimens belonging to 83 families and seven phyla. The list was assembled from the taxonomic identifications made by the BMAP. We identified species and subspecies belonging to phyla Annelida, Arthropoda, Brachiopoda, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Bryozoa and Mollusca. Abstract: In marine spatial planning, conserving adequate habitats and the food webs they support requires delineating habitats and projecting future trends. For bottom‐feeding marine birds and mammals, repeated benthic sampling over large areas to document changes and to develop predictive models of prey dispersion is quite costly. More easily monitored variables that relate strongly to the biomass and structure of benthic assemblages, and are more readily predicted from physical models of climate change, would facilitate planning efforts. The organic carbon (OC) content of sediments integrates diverse physical and biotic processes, and can be less variable over time than primary production, salinity, temperature, or position of water masses. Sediment OC further subsumes inputs at the base of food webs that can limit carbon flows to higher taxa. For the northern Bering Sea, this study explored the utility of sediment OC as a predictor of benthic assemblage types. Cluster analysis and multi‐dimensional scaling distinguished three main types along a gradient of sediment OC. The assemblage for highest sediment OC had a much greater biomass of brittlestars, diverse marine worms, and two mid‐sized, thinner‐shelled bivalves selected as prey by diving sea ducks. The assemblage for lowest sediment OC lacked brittlestars, had a much greater biomass of amphipods sought by gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus), and had a much higher biomass of two often larger or thicker‐shelled bivalves commonly targeted by walruses (Odobenus rosmarus). Areas of exceptionally low sediment OC tended towards dominance by sand dollars with low foraging value. Our study shows that sediment OC has promise as a proxy for monitoring and predicting changes in important prey assemblages in a given region. Models that link predicted hydrographic patterns to lateral advection of phytodetritus, and the resulting sediment OC, may further allow the use of physical climate models to project the future dispersion of benthic habitats for endothermic predators. Dryland ecosystems are often characterized by their vegetation patchiness. The Succulent Karoo, a semi-arid region in South Africa is characterised by distinct vegetation patches surrounded by a homogenous vegetation matrix. These patches, locally known as heuweltjies, are naturally developed earthen mounds found throughout the region that contribute significantly to landscape heterogeneity. Arthropods are key for ecological functioning in semi-arid ecosystems. However, few studies have assessed the role that heuweltjies play in maintaining arthropod diversity in the landscape. This study investigates how arthropod abundance, species richness, beta-diversity and composition respond to heuweltjies at multiple spatial scales (biotope and site). Two sampling techniques (pitfall and vacuum sampling) were used to collect epigaeic (ground) and foliage-dwelling arthropods on heuweltjies and in the surrounding matrix, at three different sites in the Succulent Karoo during drought conditions. Heuweltjies had greater epigaeic and foliage alpha-diversity and abundance than the matrix. Additionally, epigaeic and foliage arthropod community composition were dissimilar at both the biotope and site scales. Beta diversity across the three sites was high and driven by species turnover. At the biotope scale, heuweltjie and matrix plots both showed high beta-diversity. This study took place during a prolonged drought with high plant mortality and relatively few foliage arthropods, but patterns in arthropod diversity between heuweltjies and the surrounding matrix were nevertheless still apparent. These results suggest that heuweltjies promote arthropod diversity and heterogeneity in the landscape, playing a vital role as refuges, providing food and nesting resources for various arthropod species. • Heuweltjies promote arthropod diversity and landscape heterogeneity. • Species replacement drives changes in ground arthropod communities whereas nestedness drives changes in foliage arthropods. • Heuweltjies provide refuge for arthropods against unfavourable environmental conditions (drought). Arthropod assemblages form a fundamental part of terrestrial ecosystems, underpinning ecosystem processes and services. Yet, little is known about how invertebrate communities, as a whole, respond to climatic and atmospheric changes, including predicted increases in carbon dioxide concentrations ( CO2)., To date, woodland Free Air CO2 Enrichment ( FACE) studies have focused entirely on northern hemisphere managed plantations. We manipulated atmospheric CO2 in a mature, native Eucalyptus woodland (0.15 ha, >32 000 m3) in Australia, using the Eucalyptus FACE ('EucFACE') facility. We used three complementary sampling methods (vacuum sampling, pitfall and sticky trapping) to record invertebrate abundances under ambient and elevated levels of CO2 (400 versus 550 ppm)., Based on the collection of over 83 000 invertebrates, we found significant declines in the overall abundance of ground-dwelling (14.7%) and aerial (12.9%) arthropods under elevated CO2, with significant decreases in herbivore, omnivore, scavenger and parasitoid functional groups. Even though several groups showed varying declines in abundance, elevated CO2 did not measurably affect community composition., The results of the present study indicate that atmospheric CO2 levels predicted within the next 35 years may cause declines in arthropod abundances in Eucalyptus woodland. Declines found in several functional groups suggest that elevated atmospheric CO2 has the potential to affect ecosystem processes, possibly including nutrient cycling by herbivores and omnivores, as well as biocontrol by parasitoids. Neighboring plants can affect the likelihood that a focal plant is attacked by herbivores. Both the density of conspecific neighbors (resource concentration or dilution effects) and the relative density of heterospecific neighbors (associational effects or effects of neighbor frequency) within the local neighborhood can affect herbivore load and plant damage. Understanding how these neighborhood effects influence processes such as plant competition or natural selection on plant resistance traits will require knowing how both plant density and frequency affect damage, but previous studies have generally confounded density and frequency effects. In this study, we independently manipulated the absolute density and frequency (i.e., relative density) of two plant species (Solanum carolinense and Solidago altissima) to characterize neighborhood composition effects on S. carolinense damage by herbivores, providing the first picture of how both density and frequency of neighbors influence damage in a single system. We found both a positive effect of S. carolinense density on S. carolinense damage (a resource concentration effect) and a nonlinear effect of S. altissima frequency on S. carolinense damage (associational susceptibility). If these types of patterns are common in nature, future studies seeking to understand neighborhood effects on damage need to incorporate both density and frequency effects and capture any nonlinear effects by selecting a range of values rather than focusing on only a pair of densities or frequencies. This type of data on neighborhood effects will allow us to understand the contribution of neighborhood effects to population-level processes such as competition, the evolution of plant resistance to herbivores, and yield gains in agricultural crop mixtures. Riparian habitats provide detrital subsidies of varying quantities and qualities to recipient ecosystems. We used long-term data from three reference streams (covering 24 stream-years) and 13-year whole-stream organic matter manipulations to investigate the influence of terrestrial detrital quantity and quality on benthic invertebrate community structure, abundance, biomass, and secondary production in rockface (RF) and mixed substrates (MS) of forested headwater streams. Using a mesh canopy covering the entire treatment stream, we examined effects of litter exclusion, small- and large-wood removal, and addition of artificial wood (PVC) and leaves of varying quality on organic matter standing crops and invertebrate community structure and function. We assessed differences in functional feeding group distribution between substrate types as influenced by organic matter manipulations and long-term patterns of predator and prey production in manipulated vs. reference years. Particulate organic matter standing crops in MS of the treatment stream declined drastically with each successive year of litter exclusion, approaching zero after three years. Monthly invertebrate biomass and annual secondary production was positively related to benthic organic matter in the MS habitats. Rockface habitats exhibited fewer changes than MS habitats across all organic matter manipulations. With leaf addition, the patterns of functional group distribution among MS and RF habitats returned to patterns seen in reference streams. Secondary production per unit organic matter standing crop was greatest for the leaf addition period, followed by the reference streams, and significantly less for the litter exclusion and wood removal periods. These data indicate that the limited organic matter remaining in the stream following litter exclusion and wood removal was more refractory than that in the reference streams, whereas the added leaf material was more labile and readily converted into invertebrate production. Predator production and total production were tightly coupled in reference and treatment streams, indicating strong relationships between predators and their prey. Results from the artificial wood addition demonstrate that physical structure alone will not restore invertebrate productivity without detrital resources from the riparian forest. Our long-term studies conducted over three decades at the ecosystem scale unequivocally show the necessity of maintaining and restoring aquatic-terrestrial linkages in forested headwater streams. Assessment of soil biological communities and activity may be a valuable indicator of ecological stress and ecosystem function in rehabilitated bauxite residues. Establishment of keystone species and evidence of processes such as decomposition have been demonstrated on a number of mine spoil types but not on alkaline, sodic bauxite residue. Using the litterbag technique the spatial and temporal variation in decomposition rates was examined in a residue rehabilitation series; site A (not rehabilitated), site B (1yr), site C (10yr) and site D (12yrs). Soil arthropods were extracted by Tullgren and species and enzyme activities (β-glucosidase and dehydrogenase) were related to residue properties. The natural establishment of large invertebrates such as earthworms and ants show that sites C and D are in late succession while site B had a large quantity of springtails and Dipteran larvae which typify early succession. The ten year old site showed ‘best’ soil quality and this was attributed to the lower Na and exchangeable sodium percentage exhibited. The combination of improved physico-chemical properties, increased vegetation diversity, greater biological activity and invertebrate establishment indicate that the alkaline and sodic residues can be rehabilitated to a semi-natural soil quality. As a step towards the biological assessment of wetlands in South Africa, this study investigates the influence of biotope characteristics on the spatial distribution of aquatic invertebrates. The aim was to assess whether different wetland biotopes support significantly different invertebrate assemblages in terms of the composition and abundance of microcrustaceans and macroinvertebrate taxa. During October 2006, three different biotopes were sampled within Verlorenvlei and Wave's Edge wetlands (Western Cape, South Africa) using a long-handled sweep net. Composition and abundance of invertebrate assemblages were compared between and within sites for each of the wetlands. Assemblage composition generally differed among biotopes within each wetland, as revealed by cluster analysis and MDS plots. At Verlorenvlei, biotopes formed distinctive clusters with low site-specific variability. Assemblage composition at Wave's Edge revealed coarser groupings with clusters distinguishing between vegetated and non-vegetated biotopes only. Biotopes within each wetland differed significantly in terms of taxon richness, Shannon diversity and mean total invertebrate biomass (g m-3), whilst mean total density (ind m-3) differed only between biotopes in Verlorenvlei. Considerable shifts in invertebrate assemblage structure corresponded to differences in electrical conductivity among sites at Verlorenvlei. For large physico-chemically heterogeneous wetlands such as Verlorenvlei, it is suggested that smaller physico-chemically homogenous zones should be identified a priori and within these areas vegetated biotopes should be sampled over the broadest possible spatial scale, whilst open-water biotopes can be sampled more narrowly. For small, reasonably homogenous wetlands such as Wave's Edge, we suggest a less broad spatial representation of biotopes and instead one should concentrate on increasing the number of sample repetitions per site. Rapa Nui is an important hotspot of endemic marine biodiversity, where diffuse land-based sources (e.g., nutrients and organic matter) entering into coastal waters could develop eutrophication in coastal environments, with deleterious impacts on the marine ecosystem. Stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) of intertidal communities (macroalgae and invertebrates) were studied from sites with contrasting human influence (populated and unpopulated), to evaluate the incorporation and transfer of diffuse land-based sources through food webs. Macroalgae showed differences between some sites, and invertebrates showed a 15N-enrichment pattern at populated areas relative to unpopulated, being these differences significant in gastropods, barnacles and sea urchins. Moreover, trophic structure metrics suggest a higher trophic diversity in populated areas relative to unpopulated and support the isotopic partitioning between sites, associated with the incorporation of sources with 15N-enriched values. The above suggests that diffuse land-based sources could be incorporated by macroalgae, transferred into benthic consumers, and altering the trophic structure. • Diffuse land-based nutrients contribute to the eutrophication of marine ecosystems. • Intertidal benthic organisms were collected in different sites around Rapa Nui. • Stable isotopes were used to establish the incorporation of diffuse land-based inputs. • Macroalgae and invertebrate taxa were 15N-enriched in human influenced areas. • An ongoing eutrophication process could affect the coastal environments at Rapa Nui. The inputs and breakdown of terrestrial leaf litter in streams is a fundamental ecological process that sustains in-stream foodwebs and secondary production. In temporary rivers, litter breakdown is reduced during dry phases, but the long-term effect of alternating drying and wetting cycles on litter breakdown is still poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that leaf litter breakdown (LLB) in temporary rivers is primarily controlled by flow permanence (the number of flowing days over a given period expressed in %), and that drying events affect LLB during leaf fall periods through reduction of microbial activity and the modification of aquatic invertebrate assemblages. LLB rates ( k), microbial activity and invertebrate assemblages were determined in winter at ten cross-sections scattered along a flow permanence gradient on the temporary Albarine River, France. Results demonstrated that summer drying events affected the breakdown process for up to 6 months after flow has resumed in the river. LLB rates decreased exponentially with decreasing flow permanence, and with increasing drying event duration and frequency. These exponential relationships were observed for flow permanence variables calculated for the river for both 24-years and 1-year time periods prior to the experiment. A decrease in flow permanence from 100 to 85% led to a four-fold decrease in leaf litter breakdown rate. Microbial activity, which typically did not differ between cross-sections, failed to explain the between-cross-section differences in k. By contrast, invertebrate assemblages and, shredders, in particular, decreased exponentially with decreasing flow permanence and with increasing drying event duration and frequency. Abstract: To compare the effects of two different forms of sustainable agriculture on native taxa, this study assessed invertebrate communities in ten matched pairs of kiwifruit orchards managed under either organic or integrated pest management (IPM) systems in New Zealand. Three types of trap were used to collect as many different invertebrate taxa as possible in three trapping periods spread over the 2007/08 fruit growing season. A total of 602 taxa were identified in the samples. Significantly more taxa were collected from the organic orchards than the IPM orchards in all three periods. The invertebrate assemblages collected from the two orchard types were also significantly different in both January and March 2008. There was no significant difference in the proportions of native and endemic species collected from the two orchard types, although up to 40% of the identified species differed between the two management systems. Higher numbers of predators, parasitoids, herbivores, fungivores and omnivores in the organic orchards compared with those under IPM may indicate the presence of more resilient ecosystem services in these orchards. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influences of detritus from the leaves of different species, and of exposure time on invertebrate colonization of leaves in a shaded Cerrado stream. We hypothesized that the exposure time is the main factor that influences the colonization of leaves by invertebrates. We used leaves of five tree species native to the Brazilian Cerrado: Protium heptaphyllum and Protium brasiliense (Burseraceae), Ocotea sp. (Lauraceae), Myrcia guyanensis (Myrtaceae), and Miconia chartacea (Melastomataceae), which are characterized by their toughness and low-nutritional quality. Litter bags, each containing leaves from one species, were placed in a headwater stream and removed after 7, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 days. The dominant taxon was Chironomidae, which comprised ca. 52% of all organisms and ca. 20% of the total biomass. The taxonomic richness of colonizing organisms did not vary among the leaf species. However, the density and biomass of the associated organisms varied differently among the kinds of detritus during the course of the incubation. The collector-gatherers and shredders reached higher densities in the detritus that decomposed more rapidly ( Ocotea sp. and M. guyanensis), principally in the more advanced stages of colonization. The collector-filterers reached higher densities in the detritus that decomposed more slowly ( P. heptaphyllum, P. brasiliense, and M. chartacea), principally in the initial stages of incubation. A cluster analysis divided the detritus samples of different leaf species according to the exposure time (initial phase: up to 7 days; intermediate phase: 7–30 days; advanced phase: 30–120 days), suggesting some succession in invertebrate colonization, with differences in taxon composition (indicator taxa analysis). Abstract: A multispecies approach was used to examine the role of the canopy forming kelp, Nereocystis luetkeana, in structuring kelp communities near Juneau, Alaska (58°22′53 N, 134°38′45 W). Large-scale (1500 m2) manipulations were used to test direct and indirect effects of Nereocystis on faunal assemblages. Fish and invertebrate abundances were quantified in relation to canopy (canopy, no canopy), depth (bottom, surface), and season (summer, winter) using Standard Monitoring Units for Recruitment of Fish (SMURFs), light traps, and visual surveys. Lacuna vincta directly utilized the canopy of Nereocystis with greatest abundances at canopy sites during the summer. In contrast, a direct negative effect of Nereocystis was observed for schooling Gadidae fishes; six times more fish were observed at sites without canopy kelp. The abundance of juvenile benthic fishes was twice as high at the bottom of sites containing Nereocystis as compared to no canopy sites, providing strong evidence for an indirect effect of canopy presence on community structure. Other invertebrate abundances (i.e., amphipods, copepods) were greater within the bottom strata (sub-canopy) of all sites, regardless of canopy or season. In large parts of North America and Europe, deer overabundance threatens forest plant diversity. Few researchers have examined its effects on invertebrate assemblages. In a natural experiment on Haida Gwaii (British Columbia, Canada), where Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis ) were introduced, we compared islands with no deer, with deer for fewer than 20 years, and with deer for more than 50 years. We sampled invertebrates in three habitat categories: forest edge vegetation below the browse line, forest interior vegetation below the browse line, and forest interior litter. In forest edge vegetation, invertebrate abundance and species density decreased with increasing length of browsing history. In forest interior vegetation, decrease was significant only on islands with more than 50 years of browsing. Insect abundance in the vegetation decreased eightfold and species density sixfold on islands browsed for more than 50 years compared with islands without deer. Primary consumers were most affected. Invertebrates from the litter showed little or no variation related to browsing history. We attributed the difference between vegetation-dwelling and litter-dwelling invertebrates to differences in the effect of browsing on their habitat. In the layer below the browse line deer progressively removed the habitat. The extent of litter habitat was not affected, but its quality changed. We recommend more attention be given to the effect of overabundant ungulates on forest invertebrate conservation with a focus on edge and understory vegetation in addition to litter habitat. This study determines the impact of an invasive herbaceous weed Tradescantia fluminensis on invertebrates within three lowland podocarp/ broadleaved forest remnants in southern North Island, New Zealand. Epigaeic invertebrates were sampled within three Tradescantia-infested plots and three non-infested plots at each of three sites using pitfall traps. The abundance of invertebrates was reduced in Tradescantia plots compared with non-Tradescantia plots if Collembola and Acarina, the two most abundant and variable orders, are excluded (647±123 (mean±SE) compared with 1153±370), though this difference is not statistically significant. There was no difference if they were included (3897±2530 compared with 2505±1095). Five of the 23 orders collected were sorted into recognisable taxonomic units (RTUs). RTU richness was lower in Tradescantia plots compared with non-Tradescantia plots (39.7±5.5 compared with 51.7±8.9) though there was weak statistical support. Detrended correspondence analyses separated Tradescantia and non-Tradescantia plots within sites when based on RTUs, but not when based on orders/families. Overall, impacts of Tradescantia were apparent despite large differences in invertebrate assemblages among sites. Recent conceptual and technological solutions to biodiversity assessment allow large numbers of invertebrate specimens to be processed rapidly and provide researchers and practitioners with a unique tool for characterizing habitats. One application of these advances is the ability to detect and monitor small-scale habitat heterogeneity and so provide a measure of ecosystem restoration. This case study presents a test of the efficacy of using invertebrates to assess and monitor ecological restoration following bush regeneration. Eight contiguous habitat patches within a suburb of northern Sydney, Australia, were selected to represent areas that had undergone different bush regeneration techniques. A nearby and relatively undisturbed area of bushland was also sampled. A total of 57 806 ground-active invertebrate specimens from 35 different orders were collected in pitfall traps. 1 246 ant (Formicidae) specimens were further sorted into 46 ant morphospecies from 20 genera. Analyses of the three taxonomic data sets, including two different data transformations, demonstrated that: (i) invertebrate communities successfully characterized different sites, providing a high degree of differentiation among sites; (ii) ordinations of the sites allowed visual assessment of the impact of each management technique on the habitat relative to undisturbed habitats; and (iii) characterization of sites could be achieved using abundance classes or binary counts of ant morphospecies, representing potential cost and time savings. The project duration was a total of three person weeks and cost less than US$3,000 (1999 prices) to complete. Measurement of invertebrate assemblages will provide a tool for both rapid assessment of management decisions and a means by which to implement adaptive management and restoration. Abstract Large freshwater lakes in Australia’s arid zone are episodic due to highly variable inflows from allogenic rivers. A few receive enough inflow almost yearly to be permanent, despite large losses from high evaporation. Biodiversity is high, with most taxonomic groups represented, and is largely endemic at the continental scale. There is almost no regional endemism, which is at variance with other major aquatic habitat types in Australia. Abundance fluctuates greatly, with invertebrates and fish booming and busting with floodwater input, but birds generally reach greatest numbers later in the cycle as they gather on the more persistent waters. Invertebrate assemblages are influenced by the degree of lake permanence, turbidity and salinity, providing a temporally variable mosiac of environments throughout a lake system and between systems and with time. Unlike other groups, fish are not speciose, but are important predators in most systems with breeding coinciding with flooding. This favours native species against exotics in the Coongie Lakes but, in the Paroo, exotics are common in permanent waters. Waterbirds are the very obvious components in these variable systems, using their resources for feeding and breeding. Most are extremely nomadic to take advantage of the variable habitat. Two of the most important lake systems, the Coongie Lakes on Cooper Creek and the Paroo lakes in the northwestern Murray Darling catchment, are threatened by water abstraction upstream for irrigation, so that important habitat may be lost. In addition, the lakes will become less variable and, so, possibly compromise their character with cascading effects through the ecosystem. Surface and leaf litter arthropod assemblages of the seasonal lowland coastal forests of eastern Tanzania were investigated from eleven sites over a 3-year period (1991–93). Pit-fall trap data show that four groups comprise more than 10% of the total sample: ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae, 31%), grasshoppers and crickets (Orthoptera, 22%), beetles (Coleoptera: 17.39%) and spiders (Araneae: 13.48%). Arthropod abundance varies considerably with season, with greater total numbers of arthropods in all groups found in wetter periods. Arthropod abundance also varies considerably according to habitat, with greatest numbers found in forests with the most intact canopy cover, and in valley-bottom forest as compared to ridge-top forest; the valleys are normally both wetter and with a more complete and taller canopy. Tullgren Funnel data show that over 50% of the leaf litter fauna comprises tiny arthropods of the groups Collembola and Acarina. Abundance of arthropods in the leaf litter of these forests varies from a maximum of ≈ 16,000 m–2 , to a minimum of 780 m –2 . Abundance is highest in wetter periods, in the forest areas with the most intact canopy cover, and in valley-bottom as opposed to ridge-top habitats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Consumer communities play an important role in maintaining ecosystem structure and function. In seagrass systems, algal regulation by mesograzers provides a critical maintenance function which promotes seagrass productivity. Consumer communities also represent a key link in trophic energy transfer and buffer negative effects to seagrasses associated with eutrophication. Such interactions are well documented in the literature regarding temperate systems, however, it is not clear if the same relationships exist in tropical systems. This study aimed to identify if the invertebrate communities within a tropical, multispecies seagrass meadow moderated epiphyte abundance under natural conditions by comparing algal abundance across two sites at Green Island, Australia. At each site, paired plots were established where invertebrate assemblages were perturbed via insecticide manipulation and compared to unmanipulated plots. An 89% increase in epiphyte abundance was seen after six weeks of experimental invertebrate reductions within the system. Using generalised linear mixed-effect models and path analysis, we found that the abundance of invertebrates was negatively correlated with epiphyte load on seagrass leaves. Habitat species richness was seen to be positively correlated with invertebrate abundance. These findings mirrored those of temperate systems, suggesting this mechanism operates similarly across latitudinal gradients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
