This issue of Transcultural Psychiatry showcases some recent work on idioms of distress – the latest in a long line of anthropological research concerned with cross-cultural concepts and experiences of distress.() Mark Nichter’s (1981) seminal paper introducing idioms of distress has become a cynosure for psychological anthropology and transcultural psychiatry. A growing body of work has since accumulated; however, the last time a collection of such research was brought together was the 2010 publication of a special issue in the journal Culture, Medicine and Psychiatry organized by Devon Hinton and Roberto Lewis-Fernández. In the decade since, new questions have arisen about the boundaries and applications of idioms of distress research. In this introduction, we provide a brief history of work on idioms of distress and related concepts. Then, we introduce several major themes explored by the papers in this special issue.

The hepatitis D virus (HDV) is unique in animal virology. It is the smallest of human pathogens, re- quires the HBsAg capsid of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) to assembly into infectious virions, and parasitizes the transcriptional machinery of the host. Hepatitis D is ubiquitous but prevalence varies throughout the world. It is the most severe form of chronic viral liver disorder. Vaccination against the HBV has decreased the circulation of HDV in industrialized countries but Hepatitis D remains a significant medical issue in many areas of the developing world.

Clinical psychological scientists have spent decades attempting to understand “what works for whom” in the context of youth psychotherapy, toward the longstanding goal of personalizing psychosocial interventions to fit individual needs and characteristics. However, as the articles in this Special Issue jointly underscore, more than 50 years of psychotherapy research has yet to help us realize this goal. In this introduction to the special issue, we outline how and why “aspiration-method mismatches” have hampered progress toward identifying moderators of youth psychotherapy; emphasize the need to embrace etiological complexity and scientific humility in pursuing new methodological solutions; and propose individual and structural strategies for better-aligning clinical research methods with the goal of personalizing mental health care for youth with diverse identities and treatment needs.

Each week, I record audio summaries for every paper in JACC, as well as an issue summary. Although this process is quite time-consuming, I have become familiar with every paper that we publish. Thus, I have personally selected the top 100 papers (both Original Investigations and Review Articles) from the distinct specialties each year. In addition to my personal choices, I have included papers that have been the most accessed or downloaded on our websites, as well as those selected by the JACC Editorial Board members. In order to present the full breadth of this important research in a consumable fashion, we will present these abstracts in this issue of JACC, as well as their Central Illustrations. In the 20 years since the publication of John Verano's foundational paper "Advances in Paleopathology of Andean South America," paleopathological and bioarchaeological investigations of human skeletal remains in the region have increased dramatically. Today, primary foci have grown to span the identification of disease, detailed reconstructions of biocultural interactions, embodied social experiences, and ancient living worlds. In this special issue, more than a dozen scholars reflect on the state of developments in the scientific analyses of ancient disease, life, and society across the region. For this introductory article, we frame the current state of Andean paleopathology by reviewing key historical contributions beginning in the last century. More recent trends since 1997 are defined via a meta-analysis of the literature. We then highlight current innovations and consider future directions of study. We then close with an overview of the papers comprising this special issue. Each article explores major theoretical, topical, and methodological advances that have transpired since 1997 and charts the course for the next two decades of work - with implications and insights that transcend the Andes and speak to key paleopathological issues around the world.

This special issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (JAFC) is a highlight of the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division (AGFD) technical program at the 258th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in San Diego, CA, U.S.A., on August 25-29, 2019. At the conference, AGFD had 44 oral sessions at 19 symposia and 100 poster presentations with more than 400 abstract submissions. The technical program covered a broad range of current research and development topics in agricultural and food chemistry, including bioactive food components, diet and human nutrition, utilization of agricultural materials in food systems, food packaging, nanotechnology, and food safety, as well as several special award symposia. This is the first JAFC special issue that highlights an ACS national meeting program with joint efforts from AGFD.

This introductory article to the special issue on psychotherapy and HIV provides an overview of the state of HIV intervention research, recommendations for future psychotherapy practice, and an emphasis on how psychotherapy researchers focusing on HIV should move away from the typical public health model. We provide information about how historical bias impacts HIV clinical decision-making now. In addition, we include an analysis of how public health definitions of intervention research have limited psychotherapy research-specifically the importance of common factors and process-oriented components in psychotherapy. In this introductory article, we highlight the 13 articles that comprise the 5 following sections included in the special issue: (a) General Guidelines for Psychotherapy Practice for People With HIV, (b) HIV Stigma in Psychotherapy Process and Techniques, (c) Sexual Functioning and Romantic Relationships for People with HIV, (d) A Focus on Specific Disorders (Chronic Pain and Trauma) Comorbid With HIV, and (e) A Focus on Specific Populations (Adolescents and South African Populations). We conclude by offering recommendations to researchers to focus on the sociocultural context for clients with HIV and for psychotherapists to use an intersectional approach in their work with clients with HIV. This special issue of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors honors the life and work of a beloved friend, colleague, and mentor, Dr. Nancy M. Petry, who died on July 17, 2018 of breast cancer. At the time of her death, Dr. Petry was the editor of this journal. We were gratified to receive many submissions for this issue, resulting in an outstanding set of 24 selected articles. These articles span the multiple areas of addiction research to which Dr. Petry made key contributions, and this introduction highlights her work in these areas. The topic areas in this issue include behavior analysis and behavior pharmacology; contingency management-randomized controlled trials; contingency management-implementation and dissemination; demographic predictors of outcomes across multiple clinical trials; reinforcer pathology and decision making; and gambling. We can only imagine what great work Dr. Petry would have contributed in the future, but the research presented in this issue makes clear that her legacy and impact will continue to grow. Network analysis has emerged as a promising new statistical methodology for traumatic stress studies. The present special issue of the Journal of Traumatic Stress amalgamates the reports of 10 studies that employed network analysis to further the field's understanding of traumatic stress. The current issue includes reports of network analyses that sought to better understand the impact of different kinds of traumatic events, including childhood and gender-based trauma exposure, on PTSD symptomatology as defined under the DSM-5 and ICD-11, and examined the relation between PTSD symptoms and trauma-related dissociative experiences as well as the impact of psychological treatment on trauma recovery. A variety of research designs from a diverse group of international samples were employed, including concurrent, longitudinal, experience-sampling, and treatment outcome studies. Finally, a commentary on the articles included in this special issue was provided by Dr. Carl Weems.
