We report the first comparisons of pickup proton simulation results with in situ measurements of pickup protons obtained by the SWICS instrument on Ulysses. Simulations were run using the three dimensional (3D) time-dependent Hybrid Heliospheric Modeling System with Pickup Protons (HHMS-PI). HHMS-PI is an MHD solar wind model, expanded to include the basic physics of pickup protons from neutral hydrogen that drifts into the heliosphere from the local interstellar medium. We use the same model and input data developed by Detman et al. (2011) to now investigate the pickup protons. The simulated interval of 82 days in 2003 2004, includes both quiet solar wind (SW) and also the October November 2003 solar events (the Halloween 2003 solar storms). The HHMS-PI pickup proton simulations generally agree with the SWICS measurements and the HHMS-PI simulated solar wind generally agrees with SWOOPS (also on Ulysses) measurements. Many specific features in the observations are well represented by the model. We simulated twenty specific solar events associated with the Halloween 2003 storm. We give the specific values of the solar input parameters for the HHMS-PI simulations that provide the best combined agreement in the times of arrival of the solar-generated shocks at both ACE and Ulysses. We show graphical comparisons of simulated and observed parameters, and we give quantitative measures of the agreement of simulated with observed parameters. We suggest that some of the variations in the pickup proton density during the Halloween 2003 solar events may be attributed to depletion of the inflowing local interstellar medium (LISM) neutral hydrogen (H) caused by its increased conversion to pickup protons in the immediately preceding shock.

We have extended our earlier calculations of the distance to the heliospheric termination shock (HTS), which covered the period from the launch of V1 and V2 in 1977 to 2005, to the period from 2006 to 2011. During this latter period, the solar wind speed, ram pressure, and magnetic field decreased to the lowest levels in recent history, related to the sunspot minimum in 2008-2009. The HTS distance has decreased correspondingly so that V1, which was crossed by the HTS at 94 AU in late 2004, would now, in early 2011, be expected to reach the HTS at a distance of approx 80 AU, when the HTS distance would be expected to be at its minimum. Similarly, V2, which was crossed by the HTS at 84 AU in mid-2007, would, in early 2011, reach the HTS at a distance of only 74 AU. These distances, in early 2011, are approx 15% less than those at which V1 and V2 initially reached the HTS. The distance to the heliopause (HP) is more uncertain, but recent calculations place its equilibrium distance at between 1.4 and 1.6 times the HTS distance. Allowing for an additional 1 year for the HP to reach its equilibrium minimum distance relative to the HTS would mean that, assuming this distance remains a constant fraction larger than the HTS distance, the HP distance would be at its minimum distance of (1.4-1.6) X 80 AU = 112-128 AU in the direction of V1 in early 2012. At this time, V1 will be at a distance of approx 120 AU so that there is a possibility that V1 could cross the HP and enter interstellar space at the time 2012.0 +/- 1 year. If the crossing does not happen during this time period, then it is unlikely that V1 will reach this defining boundary before about 2016 because of the expected outward motion of the HTS and the HP toward their more normal distances of 85-96 and approx 120-140 AU, coincident with the maximum of the new sunspot cycle.

We have found in the Voyager 2 (V2) plasma science data in the heliosheath (HS) near the termination shock (TS) high-energy ions (HEIs) in addition to the bulk plasma convective flow ions. The HEI detections temporally coincide with increased V2 plasma wave subsystem (PWS) activity in "event A"h of Gurnett and Kurth. Maxwellian fits to HEI detections indicate the HEIs are moving radially anti -Sunward with a proton speed of 600 km/s, a density of 10(exp -4) (exp -3), and a thermal speed of 10 km/s. The heliosheath bulk convective protons have a speed of 204 km/s, a density of 0.0029 cm(exp -3), and a thermal speed of 26.7 km/s. The HEI flux and ram pressure are approximately 10% and 30% of those of the bulk HS flow. Since the HEI speed is both close to twice the solar wind speed and independent of the heliosheath bulk plasma speed, the HEIs may be detections of pickup protons formed in the solar wind and convected through the TS. The HEIs also are reminiscent of the pickup protons upstream of the Mars bow shock where their energy also was independent of the bulk plasma speed and attributed to multiple reflections off the Mars bow shock. Gurnett and Kurth 's (2008) event A enhanced PWS activity may be generated by a two ]stream instability from the interaction of these HEIs with the heliosheath bulk plasma ions. We present our findings, discuss their implications, and also present alternative interpretations.

This final report summarizes some of the important scientific contributions to the Research on Orbital Plasma Electrodynamics (ROPE) investigation, to the Tethered Satellite System (TSS) mission, and to NASA that resulted from the work carried out under this contract at Carmel Research Center. These include Dr. Intriligator's participation in the PIT for the TSS-1R simulations and flight, her participation in ROPE team meetings and IWG meetings, her scientific analyses, and her writing and submitting technical papers to scientific journals. The scientific analyses concentrated on the characterization of energetic ions and their possible relation to pickup ion effects, correlation of particle and other effects (e.g., magnetic field, satellite surface), and collaboration with theorists including with ROPE co-investigators. In addition, scientific analyses were carried out of the effects due to satellite gas releases.

Ulysses measurements of energetic and solar wind particles taken near 5 AU between 20 and 30 degrees south latitude during a well-developed recurring corotating interaction region (CIR) show that the CIR's corotating energetic ion population (CEIP) associated with the trailing reverse shock starts within the CIR at the stream interface. This is consistent with an earlier result obtained by Pioneers 10 and 11 in the ecliptic plane between 4 and 6 AU. The Ulysses/Pioneer finding noteworthy since the stream interface is not magnetically connected to the reverse shock but lies 12-17 corotation hours from it. Thus, the finding to be inconsistent with the basic model that generates CEIP particles at the reverse shock and propagates them along field lines Eliminating the inconsistency probably entails an extension of the standard model. We consider two possible extensions cross-field diffusion and energetic particles generation closer to the sun in the gap between the stream interface and the reverse shock.

Corotating energetic ion populations (CEIPs) associated with the forward and reverse shocks of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) are observed in CIRs at places where models say are magnetically unconnected to either shock. Such disconnections between CEIPs and shocks are common and have been documented with data from Pioneers 10 and 11 and confirmed with data from Ulysses. They pose a problem for models that account for these CEIPs in terms of ion energization at the shocks followed by ion propagation along field lines. Two possible resolutions to this problem have been suggested: diffusion of the ions across field lines and extension of the ion energization process to regions beyond the shock waves. Here we quantitatively examine the first of these possibilities. We give the Green's function solution to the convection-diffusion equation applied to idealized CIR geometry, with a source at the reverse shock -- the main producer of CEIPs. Two kinds of diffusion are considered: resonant diffusion and stochastic field line diffusion. We find that for resonant diffusion the computed ratio is many orders of magnitudes below the observed ratio. For stochastic field line diffusion, the computed ratio approximately equals the observed ratio if a diffusion coefficient appropriate to the free solar wind is used. It is several orders of magnitude below the observed ratio, however, if a diffusion coefficient appropriate to CIRs is used. We conclude that cross-field diffusion probably does not account for the presence of energetic ions in regions of CIRs that are magnetically unconnected to its shock waves. We suggest that the alternative possibility -- the energetic ions in regions magnetically unconnected to shocks result from an acceleration process that is independent of shocks -- be pursued to the point where quantitative tests can be performed.

An empirical study of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) observed between 3.9 AU and 5.9 AU on Pioneers 10 and 11 shows that the main corotation energetic ion population (CEIP), which is associated with the trailing reverse shock, terminates within the CIR at a definite, structural boundary, which we show here is the stream interface. This new result has significant implications for solar wind and energetic particle modeling. In particular it implies either that the reverse shock forms closer to the stream interface than models suggest or that the theories that treat the generation and transport of these energetic ions, such as preshock Fermi acceleration and cross-field diffusion must be combined or extended. We test these scenarios by comparing the CEIP intensity profiles on the two sides of the stream interface. We find that while each automatically accounts for one or two aspects of the results none of them alone can account for all of our empirical results.

Pioneer Venus Orbiter plasma and magnetometer observations from the first nine tail seasons of crossings of the Venus wake are used to study ion pickup in the far wake of an unmagnetized object embedded in the solar wind. This statistical study treats all of the plasma spectra containing pickup ions in the vicinity of the Venus tail. A hemispheric asymmetry is found in the pickup of ionospheric ions, with approximately four times more O(+) events observed in the 'northern' magnetic hemisphere (where the induced electric field points outward) than in the 'southern' magnetic hemisphere. Out of a total of 167 large O(+) events, 125, or 75 percent, occurred in the northern hemisphere when position is calculated in terms of Venus radii, and 129 or 77 percent occurred in the 'northern' hemisphere when position is expressed in gyroradii. This hemispheric asymmetry in ion pickup is consistent with the prediction of the Cloutier et al. (1974) mass loading model for Venusian ions above the ionopause boundary.

The Mars Aeronomy Observer (MAO) is a candidate follow-on mission to Mars Observer (MO) in the Planetary Observer Program. The four Mariner and two Viking spacecraft sent to Mars between 1965 and 1976 have provided a wealth of information concerning Martian planetology. The Mars Observer, to be launched in 1990, will build on their results by further examining the elemental and mineralogical composition of the surface, the strength and multipolar composition of the planetary magnetic field, the gravitational field and topography, and the circulation of the lower atmosphere. The Mars Aeronomy Observer is intended to address the last major aspects of Martian environment which have yet to be investigated: the upper atmosphere, the ionsphere, and the solar wind interaction region.
