Chloromethane, CH3Cl, is the first organohalogen molecule to be detected in the interstellar medium. Using the recently generated accurate three-dimensional potential energy surface (3D-PES) for the weakly bound CH335Cl–He complex, we deduced that of CH337Cl–He. Both 3D-PESs were incorporated later into dynamical computations code for nuclear motions treatments of each isotopologue colliding with He. We determined the state-to-state (de-)excitation cross sections for transitions among the 105 lowest rotational levels of both ortho-CH335Cl and ortho-CH337Cl (up to jkɛ = 206±). For total energies up to 100 cm−1, we used the quantum close-coupling methodology, and we adopted the coupled state approach for higher energies (up to 2500 cm−1). Rate coefficients for temperatures ranging from 5 to 150 K are then deduced after averaging these cross sections over a Maxwell–Boltzmann velocity distribution. Computations show that isotopic effects are weak, validating the use of collision rates of ortho-CH335Cl for ortho-CH337Cl and vice-versa. However, we expect that our results will be helpful to accurately determine the abundances of these isotopologues in the interstellar medium and, more generally, for understanding the complex and still not fully elucidated chemistry of chlorine containing molecular species there. Structure determination is necessary to identify unknown organic molecules, such as those in natural products, forensic samples, the interstellar medium, and laboratory syntheses. Rotational spectroscopy enables structure determination by providing accurate 3D information about small organic molecules via their moments of inertia. Using these moments, Kraitchman analysis determines isotopic substitution coordinates, which are the unsigned |x|, |y|, |z| coordinates of all atoms with natural isotopic abundance, including carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. While unsigned substitution coordinates can verify guesses of structures, the missing +/− signs make it challenging to determine the actual structure from the substitution coordinates alone. To tackle this inverse problem, we develop Kreed (Kraitchman REflection-Equivariant Diffusion), a generative diffusion model that infers a molecule's complete 3D structure from only its molecular formula, moments of inertia, and unsigned substitution coordinates of heavy atoms. Kreed's top-1 predictions identify the correct 3D structure with near-perfect accuracy on large simulated datasets when provided with substitution coordinates of all heavy atoms with natural isotopic abundance. Accuracy decreases as fewer substitution coordinates are provided, but is retained for smaller molecules. On a test set of experimentally measured substitution coordinates gathered from the literature, Kreed predicts the correct all-atom 3D structure in 25 of 33 cases, demonstrating experimental potential for de novo 3D structure determination with rotational spectroscopy. There is an ongoing debate on the apparent depletion of sulfur in the interstellar medium (ISM) compared to its universal abundance; therefore, the investigation of sulfurous compounds at low temperatures is of utmost importance. This work aims to study thioacetamide, H3C–C(=S)–NH2, in low-temperature inert Ar and para-H2 matrices by IR spectroscopy. The samples have been exposed to various sources of irradiation, such as Lyman-α or laser UV photons as well as energetic electrons. Using different host materials enabled assessing the matrix's impact on precursor decomposition. The response of the molecule to different types of irradiation has also been evaluated. The existence of three main decomposition channels were deduced: formation of (i) CH3, CH4, and HNCS; (ii) H2S and H2C=C=NH; and (iii) NH3 and H2C=C=S. The H3C–CN and H3C–NC isomers of H2C=C=NH could also be identified. Secondary products such as HNC and HCN were also detected in the quantum solid para-H2 in contrast to the more rigid Ar matrix. The listed decomposition products have been observed in the ISM, with the exception of H2C=C=NH and H3C–NC. The results point to the potential sensitivity of the precursor molecule to energetic radiation in space environments. The use of machine learning (ML) in chemical physics has enabled the construction of interatomic potentials having the accuracy of ab initio methods and a computational cost comparable to that of classical force fields. Training an ML model requires an efficient method for the generation of training data. Here, we apply an accurate and efficient protocol to collect training data for constructing a neural network-based ML interatomic potential for nanosilicate clusters. Initial training data are taken from normal modes and farthest point sampling. Later on, the set of training data is extended via an active learning strategy in which new data are identified by the disagreement between an ensemble of ML models. The whole process is further accelerated by parallel sampling over structures. We use the ML model to run molecular dynamics simulations of nanosilicate clusters with various sizes, from which infrared spectra with anharmonicity included can be extracted. Such spectroscopic data are needed for understanding the properties of silicate dust grains in the interstellar medium and in circumstellar environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite their chemical simplicity, the spectroscopic investigation of light hydrides, such as hydrogen sulfide, is challenging due to strong hyperfine interactions and/or anomalous centrifugal-distortion effects. Several hydrides have already been detected in the interstellar medium, and the list includes H2S and some of its isotopologues. Astronomical observation of isotopic species and, in particular, those bearing deuterium is important to gain insights into the evolutionary stage of astronomical objects and to shed light on interstellar chemistry. These observations require a very accurate knowledge of the rotational spectrum, which is so far limited for mono-deuterated hydrogen sulfide, HDS. To fill this gap, high-level quantum-chemical calculations and sub-Doppler measurements have been combined for the investigation of the hyperfine structure of the rotational spectrum in the millimeter- and submillimeter-wave region. In addition to the determination of accurate hyperfine parameters, these new measurements together with the available literature data allowed us to extend the centrifugal analysis using a Watson-type Hamiltonian and a Hamiltonian-independent approach based on the Measured Active Ro-Vibrational Energy Levels (MARVEL) procedure. The present study thus permits to model the rotational spectrum of HDS from the microwave to far-infrared region with great accuracy, thereby accounting for the effect of the electric and magnetic interactions due to the deuterium and hydrogen nuclei. Radiation pressure exerted by solar photon output is salient to the motion of primary neutral hydrogen atoms streaming into the inner heliosphere directly from the local interstellar medium. The action of a time-dependent radiation pressure force, when coupled with the usual gravitational force, changes the characteristic velocities, and therefore energies, of the atoms when they reach regions in which explorer probes are present. A study is presented that uses a 2D code to backtrace neutral hydrogen trajectories from representative target points located 1 au from the Sun. It makes use of both a radiation pressure function and a function for the photoionization rate at 1 au that both oscillate with time based on measurements over a typical solar cycle, as well as a time-independent charge exchange ionization rate at 1 au. Assuming a Maxwellian distribution in the distant upwind direction, phase space data is calculated at the target points, at different moments in time. The dependence of the force on the radial particle velocity has been omitted in the analysis, such that the emphasis is on the effects of the global solar UV intensity variations through the solar cycle. This process allows for the analysis of direct and indirect Maxwellian components through time and space in the time-dependent force environment. Additionally, pseudo-bound orbits caused by energy losses associated with this force environment are observed, and their properties are evaluated with the aim of determining their effects on potential measurements by explorer probes. C  i absorbers play an important role as indicators for exploring the presence of cold gas in the interstellar medium of galaxies. However, the current data base of C  i absorbers is very limited due to their weak absorption feature and rarity. Here, we report results from a search of C  i λλ1560, 1656 absorption lines using Mg  ii absorbers as signposts with modified deep learning algorithms, which provides a very quick way to search for weak C  i absorber candidates. A total of 107 C  i absorbers were detected, which nearly doubles the size of previously known samples. In addition, we found 17 C  i absorbers to be associated with 2175 Å dust absorbers (2DAs), i.e. about 16 per cent C  i absorbers are associated with 2DAs. Comparing the average dust depletion patterns of C  i absorbers with those of damped Lyman α absorbers (DLAs), Mg  ii absorbers, Ca  ii absorbers, and 2175 Å dust absorbers (2DAs) shows that C  i absorbers generally have environments with more dust than DLAs, Mg  ii , and Ca  ii absorbers, but similar to dust in 2DAs. Similarity between the dust depletion pattern of C  i absorbers to that of the warm disc in the Milky Way indicates that C  i absorption clouds are possibly associated with disc components in distant galaxies. The impact of winds and jet-inflated bubbles driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to significantly affect the host galaxy's interstellar medium (ISM) and regulate star formation. To explore this scenario, we perform a suite of hydrodynamic simulations to model the interaction between turbulent star-forming clouds and highly pressurized AGN-driven outflows, focusing on the effects of self-gravity. Our results demonstrate that the cloudlets fragmented by the wind can become gravitationally bound, significantly increasing their survival time. While external pressurization leads to a global collapse of the clouds in cases of weaker winds (⁠|$10^{42}\!-\!10^{43}~{\rm erg\, s^{-1}}$|⁠), higher power winds (⁠|$10^{44}\!-\!10^{45}~{\rm erg\, s^{-1}}$|⁠) disperse the gas and cause localized collapse of the cloudlets. We also demonstrate that a kinetic energy-dominated wind is more efficient in accelerating and dispersing the gas than a thermal wind with the same power. The interaction can give rise to multiphase outflows with velocities ranging from a few 100 to several 1000  |${\rm km\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. The mass outflow rates are tightly correlated with the wind power, which we explain by an ablation-based mass-loss model. Moreover, the velocity dispersion and the virial parameter of the cloud material can increase by up to one order of magnitude through the effect of the wind. Even though the wind can suppress or quench star formation for about 1 Myr during the initial interaction, a substantial number of gravitationally bound dense cloudlets manage to shield themselves from the wind's influence and subsequently undergo rapid gravitational collapse, leading to an enhanced star formation rate. Quasar absorption spectra measurements suggest that reionization proceeded rapidly, ended late at z ∼ 5.5, and was followed by a flat ionizing background evolution. Simulations that reproduce this behaviour often rely on a fine-tuned galaxy ionizing emissivity, which peaks at z ∼ 6–7 and drops a factor of 1.5–2.5 by z ∼ 5. This is puzzling since the abundance of galaxies is observed to grow monotonically during this period. Explanations for this include effects such as dust obscuration of ionizing photon escape and feedback from photoheating of the IGM. We explore the possibility that this drop in emissivity is instead an artefact of one or more modelling deficiencies in reionization simulations. These include possibly incorrect assumptions about the ionizing spectrum and/or inaccurate modelling of IGM clumping. Our results suggest that the need for a drop could be alleviated if simulations are underestimating the IGM opacity from massive, star-forming haloes. Other potential modelling issues either have a small effect or require a steeper drop when remedied. We construct an illustrative model in which the emissivity is nearly flat at reionization's end, evolving only ∼0.05 dex at 5 < z < 7. More realistic scenarios, however, require a ∼0.1–0.3 dex drop. We also study the evolution of the Ly α effective optical depth distribution and compare to recent measurements. We find that models that feature a hard ionizing spectrum and/or are driven by faint, low-bias sources most easily reproduce the mean transmission and optical depth distribution of the forest simultaneously. Understanding what shapes the cold gas component of galaxies, which both provides the fuel for star formation and is strongly affected by the subsequent stellar feedback, is a crucial step towards a better understanding of galaxy evolution. Here, we analyse the H  i properties of a sample of 46 Milky Way halo-mass galaxies, drawn from cosmological simulations (EMP- Pathfinder and Fire box). This set of simulations comprises galaxies evolved self-consistently across cosmic time with different baryonic sub-grid physics: three different star formation models [constant star formation efficiency (SFE) with different star formation eligibility criteria, and an environmentally dependent, turbulence-based SFE] and two different feedback prescriptions, where only one sub-sample includes early stellar feedback. We use these simulations to assess the impact of different baryonic physics on the H  i content of galaxies. We find that the galaxy-wide H  i properties agree with each other and with observations. However, differences appear for small-scale properties. The thin H  i discs observed in the local universe are only reproduced with a turbulence-dependent SFE and/or early stellar feedback. Furthermore, we find that the morphology of H  i discs is particularly sensitive to the different physics models: galaxies simulated with a turbulence-based SFE have discs that are smoother and more rotationally symmetric, compared to those simulated with a constant SFE; galaxies simulated with early stellar feedback have more regular discs than supernova-feedback-only galaxies. We find that the rotational asymmetry of the H  i discs depends most strongly on the underlying physics model, making this a promising observable for understanding the physics responsible for shaping the interstellar medium of galaxies. We present an analysis of the ultraviolet (UV) continuum slopes (β) for a sample of 172 galaxy candidates at 8 < z phot < 16 selected from a combination of JWST NIRCam imaging and COSMOS/UltraVISTA ground-based near-infrared imaging. Focusing primarily on a new sample of 121 galaxies at 〈 z 〉 ≃ 11 selected from ≃ 320 arcmin2 of public JWST imaging data across 15 independent data sets, we investigate the evolution of β in the galaxy population at z ≥ 9. We find a significant trend between β and redshift, with the inverse-variance weighted mean UV slope evolving from 〈β〉 = −2.17 ± 0.06 at z  = 9.5 to 〈β〉 = −2.59 ± 0.06 at z  = 11.5. Based on a comparison with stellar population models including nebular continuum emission, we find that at z > 10.5 the average UV continuum slope is consistent with the intrinsic blue limit of dust-free stellar populations (βint ≃ −2.6). These results suggest that the moderately dust-reddened galaxy population at z < 10 was essentially unattenuated at z ≃ 11. The extremely blue galaxies being uncovered at z > 10 place important constraints on dust attenuation in galaxies in the early Universe, and imply that the already observed galaxy population is likely supplying an ionizing photon budget capable of maintaining ionized intergalactic medium fractions of ≳ 5 per cent at z ≃ 11. Ion Weibel instability is considered to be the dominant physics for the dissipation in high-Mach number astrophysical shocks such as supernova remnant shocks and gamma-ray burst shocks. We study the instability dependence on various parameters using theory and particle-in-cell simulations. We demonstrate that electron physics determines the saturation level of the Weibel-generated magnetic field, even though the instability is driven by the ions. We discuss the application to astrophysical and laboratory laser experiment environments to clarify the roles of the ion Weibel instability. We develop a model for the isotropization length-scale in Weibel-mediated shocks and compare its value to other characteristic length-scales of each system. We find that electron heating to near equipartition is crucial for the formation of ultrarelativistic Weibel-mediated shocks. On the other hand, our results imply that non-relativistic shocks in the typical interstellar medium are not purely mediated by the Weibel instability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we investigated the nitrogen and oxygen abundances in a sample of galaxies with Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Regions (LINERs) in their nucleus. Optical spectroscopic data (3600 – 10 000 Å) of 40 LINERs from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies (MaNGAs) survey were considered. Only objects classified as retired galaxies, that is, whose main ionization sources are post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (pAGB) stars, were selected. The abundance estimates were obtained through detailed photoionization models built with the cloudy code to reproduce a set of observational emission line intensities ratios of the sample. Our results show that LINERs have oxygen and nitrogen abundances in the ranges of |$\rm 8.0 \: \lesssim \: 12+\log (O/H) \: \lesssim \: 9.0$| (mean value 8.74 ± 0.27) and |$\rm 7.6 \: \lesssim \: 12+\log (N/H) \: \lesssim \: 8.5$| (mean value 8.05 ± 0.25), respectively. About 70 per cent of the sample have oversolar O/H and N/H abundances. Our abundance estimates are in consonance with those for Seyfert 2 nuclei and H  ii regions with the highest metallicity, indicating that these distinct object classes show similar enrichment of the interstellar medium (ISM). The LINERs in our sample are located in the higher N/O region of the N/O versus O/H diagram, showing an unexpected negative correlation between these two parameters. These results suggest that these LINERs mainly exhibit a secondary nitrogen production and could be acting some other mechanisms that deviate them from the usual theoretical secondary nitrogen production curve and the H  ii regions observations. However, we did not find any evidence in our data able to support the literature suggested mechanisms. Alternatively, our results show that LINERs do not present any correlation between the N/O abundances and the stellar masses of the hosting galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In interstellar environment, fullerene species readily react with large molecules (e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs and their derivatives) in the gas phase, which may be the formation route of carbon dust grains in space. In this work, the gas-phase ion–molecule collision reaction between fullerene cations (⁠|${\rm C}_{n}\, ^+$|⁠ , n  = 32, 34,..., 60) and functionalized PAH molecules (9-hydroxyfluorene, C13H10O) are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The experimental results show that fullerene/9-hydroxyfluorene cluster cations are efficiently formed, leading to a series of large fullerene/9-hydroxyfluorene cluster cations (e.g. [(C13H10O)C60]+, [(C13H10O)3C58]+, and [(C26H18O)(C13H10O)2C48]+). The binding energies and optimized structures of typical fullerene/9-hydroxyfluorene cluster cations were calculated. The bonding ability plays a decisive role in the cluster formation processes. The reaction surfaces, modes, and combination reaction sites can result in different binding energies, which represent the relative chemical reactivity. Therefore, the geometry and composition of fullerene/9-hydroxyfluorene cluster cations are complicated. In addition, there is an enhanced chemical reactivity for smaller fullerene cations, which is mainly attributed to the newly formed deformed carbon rings (e.g. 7 C-ring). As part of the co-evolution network of interstellar fullerene chemistry, our results suggest that ion–molecule collision reactions contribute to the formation of various fullerene/9-hydroxyfluorene cluster cations in the interstellar medium, providing insights into different chemical reactivity caused by oxygenated functional groups (e.g. hydroxyl, OH, or ether, C-O-C) on the cluster formations. Partially ionized plasmas (PIP) constitute an essential ingredient of our plasma universe. Historically, the physical effects associated with partial ionization were considered in astrophysical topics such as the interstellar medium, molecular clouds, accretion disks and, later on, in solar physics. PIP can be found in layers of the Sun's atmosphere as well as in solar structures embedded within it. As a consequence, the dynamical behaviour of these layers and structures is influenced by the different physical effects introduced by partial ionization. Here, rather than considering an exhaustive discussion of partially ionized effects in the different layers and structures of the solar atmosphere, we focus on solar prominences. The reason is that they represent a paradigmatic case of a partially ionized solar plasma, confined and insulated by the magnetic field, constituting an ideal environment to study the effects induced by partial ionization. We present the current knowledge about the effects of partial ionization in the global stability, mass cycle and dynamics of solar prominences. We revise the identified observational signatures of partial ionization in prominences. We conclude with prospects for PIP research in prominences, proposing the path for advancing in the prominence modelling and theory and using new and upcoming instrumentation. Since synchrotron polarization fluctuations are related to the fundamental properties of the magnetic field, we propose the polarization intensity variance to measure the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM) magnetization. We confirm the method's applicability by comparing it with the polarization angle dispersion and its reliability by measuring the underlying Alfvénic Mach number of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. With the finding of the power-law relation of A ∝ M A 2 between polarization intensity variance A and Alfvénic Mach number M A, we apply the new technique to the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey data, achieving the Alfvénic Mach number of the Galactic ISM. Our results show that the low-latitude Galactic ISM is dominated by sub-Alfénic turbulence, with M A approximately between 0.5 and 1.0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) represents ionized gases traced by optical/UV lines beyond the stellar extent of galaxies. We herein introduce a novel multislit narrow-band spectroscopy method to conduct spatially resolved spectroscopy of the eDIG around a sample of nearby edge-on disk galaxies (eDIG-CHANGES). In this paper, we introduce the project design and major scientific goals, as well as a pilot study of NGC 3556 (M108). The eDIG is detected to a vertical extent of a few kiloparsecs above the disk, comparable to the X-ray and radio images. We do not see significant vertical variation of the [N ii ]/H α line ratio. A rough examination of the pressure balance between different circumgalactic medium phases indicates the magnetic field is in a rough pressure balance with the X-ray emitting hot gas and may play an important role in the global motion of both the eDIG and the hot gas in the lower halo. At the location of an Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observed UV bright background active galactic nucleus ∼29 kpc from the center of NGC 3556, the magnetic pressure is much lower than that of the hot gas and the ionized gas traced by UV absorption lines, although the extrapolation of the pressure profiles may cause some biases in this comparison. By comparing the position–velocity diagrams of the optical and CO lines, we also find the dynamics of the two gas phases are consistent with each other, with no evidence of a global inflow/outflow and a maximum rotation velocity of ∼150 km s−1. Enols—tautomers of ketones or aldehydes—are considered key intermediates in the formation of prebiotic sugars and sugar acids. Although laboratory simulation experiments suggest that enols should be ubiquitous in the interstellar medium, the underlying formation mechanisms of enols in interstellar environments are largely elusive. Here, we present the laboratory experiments on the formation of glyoxal (HCOCHO) along with its ynol tautomer acetylenediol (HOCCOH) in interstellar ice analogs composed of carbon monoxide (CO) and water (H2O) upon exposure to energetic electrons as a proxy for secondary electrons generated from Galactic cosmic rays. Utilizing tunable vacuum ultraviolet photoionization reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry, glyoxal and acetylenediol were detected in the gas phase during temperature-programmed desorption. Our results reveal the formation pathways of glyoxal via radical–radical recombination of two formyl (HĊO) radicals, and that of acetylenediol via keto-enol-ynol tautomerization. Due to the abundance of carbon monoxide and water in interstellar ices, glyoxal and acetylenediol are suitable candidates for future astronomical searches. Furthermore, the detection of acetylenediol in astrophysically relevant ices advances our understanding for the formation pathways of high-energy tautomers such as enols in deep space. The interaction between supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback and the circumgalactic medium (CGM) continues to be an open question in galaxy evolution. In our study, we use smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations to explore the impact of SMBH feedback on galactic metal retention and the motion of metals and gas into and through the CGM of L* galaxies. We examine 140 galaxies from the 25 Mpc cosmological volume Romulus25, with stellar masses between log(M */ M ⊙) = 9.5–11.5. We measure the fraction of metals remaining in the interstellar medium (ISM) and CGM of each galaxy and calculate the expected mass of each SMBH based on the M BH– σ relation (Kormendy & Ho 2013). The deviation of each SMBH from its expected mass, Δ M BH, is compared to the potential of its host via σ. We find that SMBHs with accreted mass above M BH– σ are more effective at removing metals from the ISM than undermassive SMBHs in star-forming galaxies. Overall, overmassive SMBHs suppress the total star formation of their host galaxies and more effectively move metals from the ISM into the CGM. However, we see little to no evacuation of gas from the CGM out of their halos, in contrast with other simulations. Finally, we predict that C iv column densities in the CGM of L* galaxies are unlikely to depend on host galaxy SMBH mass. Our results show that the scatter in the low-mass end of the M BH– σ relation may indicate how effective an SMBH is in the local redistribution of mass in its host galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ly α damping wings in the spectra of bright objects at high redshift are a useful probe of the ionization state of the intergalactic medium during the reionization epoch. It has recently been noted that, despite the inhomogeneous nature of reionization, these damping wings have a characteristic shape which is a strong function of the volume-weighted average neutral hydrogen fraction of the intergalactic medium. We present here a closer examination of this finding using a simulation of patchy reionization from the Sherwood–Relics simulation suite. We show that the characteristic shape and scatter of the damping wings are determined by the average neutral hydrogen density along the line of sight, weighted by its contribution to the optical depth producing the damping wing. We find that there is a redshift dependence in the characteristic shape due to the expansion of the Universe. Finally, we show that it is possible to differentiate between the shapes of damping wings in galaxies and young (or faint) quasars at different points in the reionization history at large velocity offsets from the point where the transmission first reaches zero. The Spectroscopic Investigation of Nebular Gas (SING) is a near-ultraviolet (NUV) low-resolution spectrograph payload designed to operate in the NUV range, 1400 Å – 2700 Å, from a stable space platform. SING telescope has a primary aperture of 298 mm, feeding the light to the long-slit UV spectrograph. SING has a field of view (FOV) of 1 ∘ , achieving a spatial resolution of 1.33 arcminute and spectral resolution of 3.7 Å( R ∼ 600 ) at the central wavelength. SING employs a micro-channel plate (MCP) with a CMOS readout-based photon-counting detector. The instrument is designed to observe diffuse sources such as nebulae, supernova remnants, and the interstellar medium (ISM) to understand their chemistry. SING was selected by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs to be hosted on the Chinese Space Station. The instrument will undergo qualification tests as per the launch requirements. The pervasive presence of warm gas in galaxy haloes suggests that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is multiphase in its ionization structure and complex in its kinematics. Some recent state-of-the-art cosmological galaxy simulations predict an azimuthal dependence of CGM metallicities. We investigate the presence of such a trend by analysing the distribution of gas properties in the CGM around 47 z < 0.7 galaxies from the Multiphase Galaxy Halos Survey determined using a cloud-by-cloud, multiphase, ionization modelling approach. We identify three distinct populations of absorbers: cool clouds (T ∼ 104.1 K) in photoionization equilibrium, warm–hot collisionally ionized clouds (T ∼ 104.5–105 K) affected by time-dependent photoionization, and hotter clouds (T ∼ 105.4–106 K) with broad O  vi and Ly α absorption consistent with collisional ionization. We find that fragmentation can play a role in the origin of cool clouds, that warm–hot clouds are out of equilibrium due to rapid cooling, and that hotter clouds are representative of virialized halo gas in all but the lowest mass galaxies. The metallicities of clouds do not depend on the azimuthal angle or other galaxy properties for any of these populations. At face value, this disagrees with the simplistic model of the CGM with bipolar outflows and cold-mode planar accretion. However, the number of clouds per sightline is significantly larger close to the minor and major axes. This implies that the processes of outflows and accretion are contributing to these CGM cloud populations, and our sightlines are probing gas of mixed origins at all azimuthal angles in these low-redshift galaxies. The gamma-ray Fermi -LAT Galactic Centre excess (GCE) has puzzled scientists for over 15 yr. Despite ongoing debates about its properties, and especially its spatial distribution, its nature remains elusive. We scrutinize how the estimated spatial morphology of this excess depends on models for the Galactic diffuse emission, focusing particularly on the extent to which the Galactic plane and point sources are masked. Our main aim is to compare a spherically symmetric morphology – potentially arising from the annihilation of dark matter (DM) particles – with a boxy morphology – expected if faint unresolved sources in the Galactic bulge dominate the excess emission. Recent claims favouring a DM-motivated template for the GCE are shown to rely on a specific Galactic bulge template, which performs worse than other templates for the Galactic bulge. We find that a non-parametric model of the Galactic bulge derived from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey results in a significantly better fit for the GCE than DM-motivated templates. This result is independent of whether a galprop -based model or a more non-parametric ring-based model is used to describe the diffuse Galactic emission. This conclusion remains true even when additional freedom is added in the background models, allowing for non-parametric modulation of the model components and substantially improving the fit quality. When adopted, optimized background models provide robust results in terms of preference for a boxy bulge morphology for the GCE, regardless of the mask applied to the Galactic plane. Confronting measurements of the Lyman-α forest with cosmological hydrodynamical simulations has produced stringent constraints on models of particle dark matter and the thermal and ionization state of the intergalactic medium. We investigate the robustness of such models of the Lyman-α forest, focusing on the effect of particle initial conditions on the Lyman-α forest statistics in cosmological SPH simulations. We study multiple particle initialization algorithms in simulations that are designed to be identical in other respects. In agreement with the literature, we find that the correct linear theory evolution is obtained when a glass-like configuration is used for initial unperturbed gas particle positions alongside a regular grid configuration for dark matter particles and the use of non-identical initial density perturbations for gas and dark matter. However, we report that this introduces a large scale-dependent distortion in the 1D Lyman-α transmission power spectrum at small scales (k > 0.05 s km−1). The effect is close to 50  per cent at k ∼ 0.1 s km−1, and persists at higher resolution. This can severely bias inferences in parameters such as the dark matter particle mass. By considering multiple initial conditions codes and their variations, we also study the impact of a variety of other assumptions and algorithmic choices, such as adaptive softening, background radiation density, particle staggering, and perturbation theory accuracy, on the matter power spectrum, the Lyman-α flux power spectrum, and the Lyman-α flux PDF. Recent measurements of the ionizing photon mean free path (MFP) based on composite quasar spectra may point to reionization ending at z < 6. These measurements are challenging because they rely on assumptions about the proximity zones of the quasars. For example, some quasars might have been close to neutral patches where reionization was still ongoing ('neutral islands'), and it is unclear how they would affect the measurements. We address this question with mock MFP measurements from radiative transfer simulations. We find that, even in the presence of neutral islands, our mock MFP measurements agree to within |$30~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| with the true spatially averaged MFP in our simulations, which includes opacity from both the ionized medium and the islands. The inferred MFP is sensitive at the |$\lt ~50~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| level to assumptions about quasar environments and lifetimes for realistic models. We demonstrate that future analyses with improved data may require explicitly modelling the effects of neutral islands on the composite spectra, and we outline a method for doing this. Lastly, we quantify the effects of neutral islands on Lyman-series transmission, which has been modelled with optically thin simulations in previous MFP analyses. Neutral islands can suppress transmission at λrest < 912 Å significantly, up to a factor of 2 for z qso = 6 in a plausible reionization scenario, owing to absorption by many closely spaced lines as quasar light redshifts into resonance. However, the suppression is almost entirely degenerate with the spectrum normalization and thus does not significantly bias the inferred MFP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interstellar medium (ISM) is ubiquitously turbulent across many physically distinct environments within the Galaxy. Turbulence is key in controlling the structure and dynamics of the ISM, regulating star formation, and transporting metals within the Galaxy. We present the first observational measurements of turbulence in neutral hydrogen entrained in the hot nuclear wind of the Milky Way. Using recent MeerKAT observations of two extra-planar H i clouds above (gal. lat. |$\, \sim 7.0^{\circ }$|⁠) and below (gal. lat. |$\, \sim -3.9^{\circ }$|⁠) the Galactic disc, we analyse centroid velocity and column density maps to estimate the velocity dispersion (σ v ,3D), the turbulent sonic Mach number (⁠|$\mathcal {M}$|⁠), the volume density dispersion (⁠|$\sigma _{\rho /\rho _0}$|⁠), and the turbulence driving parameter (b). We also present a new prescription for estimating the spatial temperature variations of H i in the presence of related molecular gas. We measure these turbulence quantities on the global scale of each cloud, but also spatially map their variation across the plane-of-sky extent of each cloud by using a roving kernel method. We find that the two clouds share very similar characteristics of their internal turbulence, despite their varying latitudes. Both clouds are in the sub-to-trans-sonic Mach regime, and have primarily compressively driven (b ∼ 1) turbulence. Given that there is no known active star formation present in these clouds, this may be indicative of the way the cloud–wind interaction injects energy into the entrained atomic material on parsec scales. The observation of the global 21 cm signal produced by neutral hydrogen gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM) during the Dark Ages, Cosmic Dawn, and Epoch of Reionization requires measurements with extremely well-calibrated wideband radiometers. We describe the design and characterization of the Mapper of the IGM Spin Temperature (MIST), which is a new ground-based, single-antenna, global 21 cm experiment. The design of MIST was guided by the objectives of avoiding systematics from an antenna ground plane and cables around the antenna, as well as maximizing the instrument's on-sky efficiency and portability for operations at remote sites. We have built two MIST instruments, which observe in the range 25–105 MHz. For the 21 cm signal, this frequency range approximately corresponds to redshifts 55.5 > z > 12.5, encompassing the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn. The MIST antenna is a horizontal blade dipole of 2.42 m in length, 60 cm in width, and 52 cm in height above the ground. This antenna operates without a metal ground plane. The instruments run on 12 V batteries and have a maximum power consumption of 17 W. The batteries and electronics are contained in a single receiver box located under the antenna. We present the characterization of the instruments using electromagnetic simulations and lab measurements. We also show sample sky measurements from recent observations at remote sites in California, Nevada, and the Canadian High Arctic. During the last decade, cosmological simulations have managed to reproduce realistic and morphologically diverse galaxies, spanning the Hubble sequence. Central to this success was a phenomenological calibration of the few included feedback processes, while glossing over higher complexity baryonic physics. This approach diminishes the predictive power of such simulations, preventing to further our understanding of galaxy formation. To tackle this fundamental issue, we investigate the impact of cosmic rays (CRs) and magnetic fields on the interstellar medium and the launching of outflows in a cosmological zoom-in simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy. We find that including CRs decreases the stellar mass of the galaxy by a factor of 10 at high redshift and ∼4 at cosmic noon, leading to a stellar mass to halo mass ratio in good agreement with abundance matching models. Such decrease is caused by two effects: (i) a reduction of cold, high-density, star-forming gas, and (ii) a larger fraction of supernova (SN) events exploding at lower densities, where they have a higher impact. SN-injected CRs produce enhanced, multiphase galactic outflows, which are accelerated by CR pressure gradients in the circumgalactic medium of the galaxy. While the mass budget of these outflows is dominated by the warm ionized gas, warm neutral and cold gas phases contribute significantly at high redshifts. Importantly, our work shows that future JWST observations of galaxies and their multiphase outflows across cosmic time have the ability to constrain the role of CRs in regulating star formation. Primordial neutral atomic gas, mostly composed of hydrogen, is the raw material for star formation in galaxies. However, there are few direct constraints on the amount of neutral atomic hydrogen (H I) in galaxies at early cosmic times. We analyzed James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) near-infrared spectroscopy of distant galaxies, at redshifts ≳8. From a sample of 12 galaxies, we identified three that show strong damped Lyman-a absorption due to H I in their local surroundings. The galaxies are located at spectroscopic redshifts of 8.8, 10.2, and 11.4, corresponding to 400 to 600 million years after the Big Bang. They have H I column densities ≳1022 cm−2, which is an order of magnitude higher than expected for a fully neutral intergalactic medium, and constitute a gas-rich population of young star-forming galaxies. Widespread, high altitude, diffuse ionized gas with scale heights of around a kiloparsec is observed in the Milky Way and other star-forming galaxies. Numerical radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a supernova-driven turbulent interstellar medium show that gas can be driven to high altitudes above the galactic mid-plane, but the degree of ionization is often less than inferred from observations. For computational expediency, ionizing radiation from massive stars is often included as a post-processing step assuming ionization equilibrium. We extend our simulations of an Milky Way-like interstellar medium to include the combined effect of supernovae and photoionization feedback from mid-plane OB stars and a population of hot evolved low mass stars. The diffuse ionized gas has densities below 0.1 |${\rm \,cm^{-3}}$|⁠ , so recombination time-scales can exceed millions of years. Our simulations now follow the time-dependent ionization and recombination of low density gas. The long recombination time-scales result in diffuse ionized gas that persists at large altitudes long after the deaths of massive stars that produce the vast majority of the ionized gas. The diffuse ionized gas does not exhibit the large variability inherent in simulations that adopt ionization equilibrium. The vertical distribution of neutral and ionized gas is close to what is observed in the Milky Way. The volume filling factor of ionized gas increases with altitude resulting in the scale height of free electrons being larger than that inferred from H  |$\alpha$| emission, thus reconciling the observations of ionized gas made in H  |$\alpha$| and from pulsar dispersion measurements. We explore the effect of ionizing ultraviolet background (UVB) on the redshift space clustering of low- z (z ≤ 0.5) O  vi absorbers using the Sherwood simulations incorporating 'WIND' (i.e. outflows driven by stellar feedback)-only and 'WIND + AGN (active galactic nucleus)' feedback. These simulations show positive clustering signals up to a scale of 3 Mpc. We find that the effect of feedback is restricted to small scales (i.e. ≤2 Mpc or ≈200 km s−1 at z ∼ 0.3) and 'WIND'-only simulations produce a stronger clustering signal compared to simulations incorporating 'WIND + AGN' feedback. How the clustering signal is affected by the assumed UVB depends on the feedback processes assumed. For the simulations considered here, the effect of the UVB is confined to even smaller scales (i.e. <1 Mpc or ≈100 km s−1 at z ∼ 0.3). These scales are also affected by exclusion caused by line blending. Therefore, our study suggests that clustering at intermediate scales (i.e. 1–2 Mpc for simulations considered here) together with the observed column density distribution can be used to constrain the effect of feedback in simulations. The attenuation of Lyα photons by neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z ≳ 5 continues to be a powerful probe for studying the epoch of reionization. Given a framework to estimate the intrinsic (true) Lyα emission of high- z sources, one can infer the ionization state of the IGM during reionization. In this work, we use the enlarged XQR-30 sample of 42 high-resolution and high signal-to-noise quasar spectra between |$5.8\lesssim \, z\lesssim \, 6.6$| obtained with VLT/X-shooter to place constraints on the IGM neutral fraction. This is achieved using our existing Bayesian QSO reconstruction framework which accounts for uncertainties such as the: (i) posterior distribution of predicted intrinsic Lyα emission profiles (obtained via covariance matrix reconstruction of the Lyα and N  v emission lines from unattenuated high-ionization emission line profiles; C  iv , Si  iv   + O  iv ], and C  iii ]) and (ii) distribution of ionized regions within the IGM using synthetic damping wing profiles drawn from a 1.63 Gpc3 reionization simulation. Following careful quality control, we used 23 of the 42 available QSOs to obtain constraints/limits on the IGM neutral fraction during the tail-end of reionization. Our median and 68th percentile constraints on the IGM neutral fraction are: |$0.20\substack{+0.14 -0.12}$| and |$0.29\substack{+0.14 -0.13}$| at z  = 6.15 and 6.35. Further, we also report 68th percentile upper limits of |$\bar{x}_{\mathrm{H\, {\small I}}{}} \lt 0.21$|⁠ , 0.20, 0.21, and 0.18 at z  = 5.8, 5.95, 6.05, and 6.55. These results imply reionization is still ongoing at |$5.8\lesssim \, z\lesssim \, 6.55$|⁠ , consistent with previous results from XQR-30 (dark fraction and Lyα forest) along with other observational probes considered in the literature. The early stages of the epoch of reionization, probed by the 21 cm line, are sensitive to the detailed properties and formation histories of the first galaxies. We use 21cmfast and a simple, self-consistent galaxy model to examine the redshift evolution of the large-scale cross-power spectrum between the 21 cm field and line-emitting galaxies. A key transition in redshift occurs when the 21 cm field shifts from being positively correlated with the galaxy distribution to being negatively correlated. Importantly, this transition redshift is insensitive to the properties of the galaxy tracers but depends sensitively on the thermal and ionization histories traced through the 21 cm field. Specifically, we show that the transition occurs when both ionization fluctuations dominate over 21 cm spin temperature fluctuations and when the average spin temperature exceeds the temperature of the cosmic microwave background. We illustrate this with three different 21 cm models which have largely the same neutral fraction evolution but different heating histories. We find that the transition redshift has a scale dependence, and that this can help disentangle the relative importance of heating and ionization fluctuations. The best prospects for constraining the transition redshift occur in scenarios with late X-ray heating, where the transition occurs at redshifts as low as z ∼ 6–8. In our models, this requires high-redshift galaxy surveys with sensitivities of |$\sim 10^{-18}~\rm erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}$| for optical lines and |$\sim 10^{-19}~\rm erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}$| for far-infrared lines. We report the detection of the ordered alignment between the magnetic field and kpc-scale bubbles in the nearby spiral galaxy, NGC 628. Applying the Velocity Gradient Technique on CO spectroscopic data from the ALMA-PHANGS, the magnetic field of NGC 628 is measured at the scale of 191 pc (∼4″). The large-scale magnetic field is oriented parallel to the spiral arms and curves around the galactic bubble structures in the mid-infrared emission observed by the James Webb Space Telescope. A total of 21 bubble structures have been identified at the edges of spiral arms with scales over 300 pc, which includes two kpc-scale structures. These bubbles are caused by supernova remnants and prolonged star formation and are similar to the outflow chimneys found in neutral hydrogen in galactic disks. At the edge of the bubbles, the shocks traced by the O iii emission present a curved magnetic field that parallels the bubble's shell. The magnetic field follows the bubble expansion and binds the gas in the shell to trigger further star formation. By analyzing the larger sample of 1694 bubbles, we found a distinct radial-size distribution of bubbles in NGC 628 indicating the star formation history in the galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The velocity offset of Ly α emission from a galaxy's systemic redshift is an excellent tracer of conditions that enable the escape of Ly α photons from the galaxy, and potentially the all-important hydrogen ionizing Lyman continuum photons. However at z ≥ 6, Ly α is often heavily attenuated by the neutral intergalactic medium. Here we investigate the utility of C  iii ] λλ1907, 1909 emission, usually the brightest ultraviolet (UV) line after Ly α, as a proxy estimating the Ly α velocity offset (Δ v Ly α). To do so, we use analogues of reionization era galaxies based upon 52 star-forming galaxies with robust C  iii ] detections drawn from the VANDELS survey. Our sample spans a broad UV magnitude range of −18.5 < M UV < −22.0, with a sample average value of EW(C  iii ]) = 5.3 Å. We find a slight increase of EW(C  iii ]) with increasing EW(Ly α), but find a large range of EW(C  iii ]) ∼ 1–13 Å particularly at EW(Ly α) < 10 Å. Using the C  iii ] line peak as the systemic redshift, we calculate Δ v Ly α and recover the previously reported trend of decreasing Δ v Ly α with increasing EW(Ly α). Interestingly, we find an anticorrelation between Δ v Ly α and EW(C  iii ]), which also displays a dependence on the UV absolute magnitude. We derive a multivariate fit to obtain Δ v Ly α using both EW(C  iii ]) and M UV, finding that Δ v Ly α is more strongly dependent on EW(C  iii ]), with a weaker but non-negligible dependence on M UV. We find that for a fixed EW(C  iii ]), UV-bright Ly α emitting galaxies show smaller values of Δ v Ly α,which suggests that such galaxies may be undergoing more bursty star-formation compared to the UV-fainter ones, akin to a population of extremely UV-bright galaxies identified at z > 10. Its deprotonated form (cyanoketenate) is a heterocumulene that is isoelectronic to carbon suboxide whose structure has been the subject of debate. However, the investigation of cyanoketene and its derivatives is hampered by the lack of practical synthetic routes to these compounds. We report the first synthesis of the cyanoketenate anion in [K(18‐crown‐6)][NCCCO] (1) as a stable molecule on a multigram scale in excellent yields (>90 %). The structure of this molecule is probed crystallographically and computationally. We also explore the protonation of 1, and its reaction with triphenylsilylchloride and carbon dioxide. In all cases, anionic dimers are formed. The cyanoketene could be synthesized and crystallographically characterized when stabilized by a N‐heterocyclic carbene. The cyanoketenate is a very useful unsaturated building block containing N, C and O atoms that can now be explored with relative ease and will undoubtedly unlock more interesting reactivity. The enormous increase in mid-IR sensitivity and spatial and spectral resolution provided by the JWST spectrographs enables, for the first time, detailed extragalactic studies of molecular vibrational bands. This opens an entirely new window for the study of the molecular interstellar medium in luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We present a detailed analysis of rovibrational bands of gas-phase CO, H2O, C2H2, and HCN toward the heavily obscured eastern nucleus of the LIRG VV 114, as observed by NIRSpec and the medium resolution spectrograph on the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI MRS). Spectra extracted from apertures of 130 pc in radius show a clear dichotomy between the obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) and two intense starburst regions. We detect the 2.3 μ m CO bandheads, characteristic of cool stellar atmospheres, in the star-forming regions, but not toward the AGN. Surprisingly, at 4.7 μ m, we find highly excited CO (T ex ≈ 700–800 K out to at least rotational level J = 27) toward the star-forming regions, but only cooler gas (T ex ≈ 200 K) toward the AGN. We conclude that only mid-infrared pumping through the rovibrational lines can account for the equilibrium conditions found for CO and H2O in the deeply embedded starbursts. Here, the CO bands probe regions with an intense local radiation field inside dusty young massive star clusters or near the most massive young stars. The lack of high-excitation molecular gas toward the AGN is attributed to geometric dilution of the intense radiation from the bright point source. The large-scale environment of the cosmic web is believed to impact galaxy evolution, but there is still no consensus regarding the mechanisms. We use a semi-analytic model (SAM) galaxy catalog to study the star formation and dust content of local galaxies in different cosmic environments of the cosmic web—namely voids, filaments, walls, and nodes. We find a strong impact of the environment only for galaxies with M stars ≲ 1010.8 M ⊙: the less dense the environment, the larger the star formation rate and dust content at fixed stellar mass. This is attributed to the fact that galaxies in less dense environments typically feature younger stellar populations, a slower evolution of their stellar mass, and delayed star formation compared to galaxies in denser environments. As for galaxies with M stars ≳ 1010.8 M ⊙, the differences among environments are milder, due to the disk-instability-driven supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth implemented in the SAM, which makes SMBH growth, and thus galaxy quenching, environment-insensitive. We qualitatively test our predictions against observations by identifying environments in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16 using dust masses derived from the GAMA survey. The agreement is encouraging, particularly at log M stars / M ⊙ ≳ 10.5 – 11 , where the specific star formation rates and dust masses appear quite environment-insensitive. The CO-dark molecular gas (DMG), which refers to the molecular gas not traced by CO emission, is crucial for the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM). While the gas properties of DMG have been widely explored in the Solar neighborhood, whether or not they are similar in the outer disk regions of the Milky Way is still not well understood. In this Letter, we confirm the existence of DMG toward a cold H I arc structure at 13 kpc away from the Galactic center with both OH emission and H I narrow self-absorption (HINSA). This is the first detection of HINSA in the outer disk region, in which the HINSA fraction (NHINSA/NH2 = 0.022 ± 0.011) is an order of magnitude higher than the average value observed in nearby evolved dark clouds, but is consistent with that of the early evolutionary stage of dark clouds. The inferred H2 column density from both extinction and OH emission (NH2 ≈ 1020 cm−2) is an order of magnitude higher than previously estimated. Although the ISM environmental parameters are expected to be different between the outer Galactic disk regions and the Solar neighborhood, we find that the visual extinction (AV = 0.19 ± 0.03 mag), H2-gas density (nH2 = 91 ± 46 cm−3), and molecular fraction (58% ± 28%) of the DMG are rather similar to those of nearby diffuse molecular clouds. The existence of DMG associated with the expanding H I supershell supports a scenario where the expansion of supershells may trigger the formation of molecular clouds within a crossing timescale of the shock wave (∼106 yr). We report the detection of extended (> 0.5–1 kpc) high-ionization [Mg IV] 4.487 μm (80 eV) emission in four local luminous infrared galaxies observed with JWST/NIRSpec. Excluding the nucleus and outflow of the Type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the sample, we find that the [Mg IV] luminosity is well correlated with that of H recombination lines, which mainly trace star-forming clumps in these objects, and that the [Ar VI] 4.530 μm (75 eV), usually seen in AGN, is undetected. On 100–400 pc scales, the [Mg IV] line profiles are broader (σ([Mg IV]) = 90 ± 25 km s−1) and shifted (Δv up to ±50 km s−1) compared to those of the H recombination lines and lower ionization transitions (e.g., σ(Hu-12) = 57 ± 15 km s−1). The [Mg IV] kinematics follow the large-scale rotating velocity field of these galaxies, and the broad [Mg IV] profiles are compatible with the broad wings detected in the H recombination lines. Based on these observational results, extended highly ionized gas more turbulent than the ambient interstellar medium, possibly a result of ionizing shocks associated with star formation, is the most likely origin of the [Mg IV] emission. We also computed new grids of photoionization and shock models to investigate where the [Mg IV] line originates. Shocks with velocities of 100–130 km s−1 reproduce the observed line ratios and the [Mg IV] luminosity agrees with that expected from the mechanical energy released by supernove (SNe) in these regions. Therefore, these models support shocks induced by SNe as the origin of the [Mg IV] line. Future studies on the stellar feedback from SNe will benefit from the [Mg IV] line that is little affected by obscuration and, in the absence of an AGN, can only be produced by shocks due to its high ionization-potential. Context. Nitrogen fractionation is a powerful tracer of the chemical evolution during star and planet formation. It requires robust determinations of the nitrogen fractionation across different evolutionary stages. Aims. We aim to determine the 14N/15N and 12C/13C ratios for HCN in six starless and prestellar cores and to compare the results between the direct method using radiative transfer modeling and the indirect double isotope method, assuming a fixed 12C/13C ratio. Methods. We present IRAM observations of the HCN 1–0, HCN 3–2, HC15N 1–0 and H13CN 1–0 transitions toward six embedded cores. The 14N/15N ratio was derived using both the indirect double isotope method and directly through non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) 1D radiative transfer modeling of the HCN emission. The latter also provides the 12C/13C ratio, which we compared to the local interstellar value. Results. The derived 14N/15N ratios using the indirect method are generally in the range of 300-550. This result could suggest an evolutionary trend in the nitrogen fractionation of HCN between starless cores and later stages of the star formation process. However, the direct method reveals lower fractionation ratios of around ~250, mainly resulting from a lower 12C/13C ratio in the range ~20–40, as compared to the local interstellar medium value of 68. Conclusions. This study reveals a significant difference between the nitrogen fractionation ratio in HCN derived using direct and indirect methods. This can influence the interpretation of the chemical evolution and reveal the pitfalls of the indirect double isotope method for fractionation studies. However, the direct method is challenging, as it requires well-constrained source models to produce accurate results. No trend in the nitrogen fractionation of HCN between earlier and later stages of the star formation process is evident when the results of the direct method are considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aromatic infrared bands (AIBs) are a set of broad emission bands at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.2, and 12.7 μm, seen in the infrared spectra of most galaxies. With the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the 3.3 μm AIB can in principle be detected up to a redshift of ~7. Relating the evolution of the 3.3 μm AIB to local physical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) is thus of paramount importance. By applying a dedicated machine learning algorithm to JWST NIRSpec observations of the Orion Bar photodissociation region obtained as part of the PDRs4All Early Release Science (ERS) program, we extracted two template spectra capturing the evolution of the AIB-related emission in the 3.2–3.6 μm range, which includes the AIB at 3.3 μm and its main satellite band at 3.4 μm. In the Orion Bar, we analyzed the spatial distribution of the templates and their relationship with the ro-vibrational H2 line at 2.12 μm, the pure rotational line of H2 at 4.69 μm and the Pfund δ line at 3.29 μm. We find that one template (AIBIrrad) traces regions of neutral atomic gas with strong far-UV fields, while the other template (AIBShielded) corresponds to shielded regions with lower FUV fields and a higher molecular gas fraction. We then show that these two templates can be used to fit the NIRSpec AIB-related spectra of nearby galaxies. The relative weight of the two templates (AIBIrrad/Shielded) is a tracer of the radiative feedback from massive stars on the ISM. We derive an estimate of AIBIrrad/Shielded in a z = 4.22 lensed galaxy and find that it has a lower value than for local galaxies. This pilot study illustrates how a detailed analysis of AIB emission in nearby regions can be used to probe the physical conditions of the extragalactic ISM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The chemical evolution of distant galaxies cannot be assessed from observations of individual stars, in contrast to the case of nearby galaxies. On the other hand, the study of the interstellar medium (ISM) offers an alternative way to reveal important properties of the chemical evolution of distant galaxies. The chemical enrichment of the ISM is produced by all the previous generations of stars and it is possible to precisely determine the metal abundances in the neutral ISM in galaxies. The chemical abundance patterns in the neutral ISM are determined by the gas metallicity, presence of dust (the depletion of metals into dust grains), and possible deviations due to specific nucleosynthesis, for example, α-element enhancements. Aims. We aim to derive the metallicities, dust depletion, and α-element enhancements in the neutral ISM of gas-rich mostly-metal-poor distant galaxies (Damped Lyman-α absorbers, DLAs). Furthermore, we aim to constrain the distribution of α-element enhancements with metallicity in these galaxies. Methods. We collected a literature sample of column density measurements of O, Mg, Si, S, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Zn, P, and Mn in the neutral ISM of DLAs at redshifts of 0.60 < z < 3.40. We used this sample to define a golden sample of DLAs with constrained observations of Ti and at least one other α-element. By studying the abundance patterns, we determined the amount of dust depletion, solely based on the observed relative abundances of the α-elements. We then used the abundances of Fe-peak elements to determine the overall metallicity of each system, after correcting for dust depletion. In addition, we studied the deviations from the basic (linear) abundance patterns. We divided our sample into two groups of galaxies based on the widths of their absorption lines (Δv90 above or below 100 km s−1), which may be considered as a proxy for their dynamical mass. We characterised the distribution of the α-element enhancements as a function of metallicity for the galaxy population as a whole, by fitting a piecewise function (plateau, decline, plateau) to the data. Results. We observed systematic deviations from the basic abundance patterns for O, Mg, Si, S, Ti, and Mn, which we interpreted as α-element enhancements and a Mn underabundance. The distribution of the α-element enhancements with metallicity is different in the high-Δv90 and low-Δv90 groups of galaxies. We constrained the metallicity of the α-element knee for the high-Δv90 and low-Δv90 groups of galaxies to be −1.02±0.15 dex and −1.84±0.11 dex, respectively. The average α-element enhancement at the high-plateau is [α/Fe]=0.38±0.07 dex. On the other hand, Mn shows an underabundance in all DLAs in the golden sample of −0.36±0.07 dex, on average. Conclusions. We have constrained, for the first time, the distribution of the α-element enhancement with metallicity in the neutral ISM in distant galaxies. Less massive galaxies show an α-element knee at lower metallicities than more massive galaxies. This can be explained by a lower star formation rate in less massive galaxies. If this collective behaviour can be interpreted in the same way as it is for individual systems, this would suggest that more massive and metal-rich systems evolve to higher metallicities before the contribution of SN-Ia to [α/Fe] levels out that of core-collapse SNe. This finding may plausibly be supported by different SFRs in galaxies of different masses. Overall, our results offer important clues to the study of chemical evolution in distant galaxies. The X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) offers a robust tool to study the evolution and the growth of the supermassive black-hole population over cosmic time. Owing to the limited area probed by X-ray surveys, optical surveys are routinely used to probe the accretion in the high-redshift Universe z ≥ 3. However, optical surveys may be incomplete because they are strongly affected by dust redenning. In this work we derive the XLF and its evolution at high redshifts (z ≥ 3) using a large sample of AGN selected in different fields with various areas and depths covering a wide range of luminosities. Additionally, we put the tightest yet constraints on the absorption function in this redshift regime. In particular, we used more than 600 soft X-ray selected (0.5 − 2 keV) high-z sources in the Chandra deep fields, the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey, and the XMM-XXL northern field. We derived the X-ray spectral properties for all sources via spectral fitting, using a consistent technique and model. To model the parametric form of the XLF and the absorption function, we used a Bayesian methodology, allowing us to correctly propagate the uncertainties for the observed X-ray properties of our sources and also the absorption effects. The evolution of XLF is in agreement with a pure density evolution model similar to what is witnessed at optical wavelengths, although a luminosity-dependent density evolution model cannot be securely ruled out. A large fraction (∼60%) of our sources are absorbed by column densities of NH ≥ 1023 cm−2, while ∼17% of the sources are Compton-Thick. Our results favour a scenario where both the interstellar medium of the host and the AGN torus contribute to the obscuration. The derived black hole accretion rate density is roughly in agreement with the large-scale cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, if one takes into account the results that the X-ray AGN are hosted by massive galaxies, while it differs from that derived using JWST data.
