Our study aimed to translate the Stuttering Generalization Self-Measure (SGSM) into Persian and investigate its validity, reliability, and internal responsiveness in the Iranian population. This study was conducted on 30 adults who stutter (AWS) and 30 adults who do not stutter (AWNS). The International Quality of Life Assessment protocol (IQOLA) was applied to translate SGSM into Persian. The face and content validity were determined. Also, the discriminant validity was evaluated by comparing the scores of two groups. In addition, the internal consistency test-retest, and inter-judge reliability were assessed with Cronbach's alpha and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC). Moreover, the mean standardized response (MSR) and the standardized effect size were measured to determine the internal responsiveness using pre- and post-treatment data. All the items were comprehensible and clear. The content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI) for all nine questions were obtained higher than.62 and.9, respectively. The internal consistency value was high (Cronbach's alpha =.98). For the test-retest reliability, ICC values were excellent, ranging from.93 to.99. The discriminant validity results revealed a significant difference between AWS and AWNS (p <.001). Pre- and post-treatment results indicated high internal responsiveness to changes for percentage of syllable stuttered (SS%) (MSR = 1.09). The Persian version of SGSM (P-SGSM) benefits from the high values for validity and reliability. Abstract Background The degree to which a validated instrument is able to detect clinically significant change over time is an important issue for the better management of hip or knee replacement surgery. This study examines the internal responsiveness of the EQ-5D-3L, the Oxford Hip Score (OHS), and the Oxford Knee Score (OKS) by various methods. Data from NHS patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) linked to the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) dataset (2009–2015) was analysed for patients who underwent primary hip surgery (N = 181,424) and primary knee surgery (N = 191,379). Methods Paired data-specific univariate responsiveness was investigated using the standardized response mean (SRM), the standardized effect size (SES), and the responsiveness index (RI). Multivariate responsiveness was furthermore examined using the defined capacity of benefit score (i.e. paired data-specific MCID), adjusting baseline covariates such as age, gender, and comorbidities in the Box-Cox regression models. The observed and predicted percentages of patient improvement were examined both as a whole and by the patients' self-assessed transition level. Results The results showed that both the OHS and the OKS demonstrated great univariate and multivariate responsiveness. The percentages of the observed (predicted) total improvement were high: 51 (54)% in the OHS and 73 (58)% in OKS. The OHS and the OKS showed distinctive differences in improvement by the 3-level transition, i.e. a little better vs. about the same vs. a little worse. The univariate responsiveness of the EQ-5D-3L showed moderate effects in total by Cohen’s thresholds. The percentages of improvement in the EQ-5D-3L were moderate: 44 (48)% in the hip and 42 (44)% for the knee replacement population. Conclusions Distinctive percentage differences in patients’ perception of improvement were observed when the paired data-specific capacity of benefit score was applied to examine responsiveness. This is useful in clinical practice as rationale for access to surgery at the individual-patient level. This study shows the importance of analytic methods and instruments for investigation of the health status in hip and/or knee replacement surgery. The study finding also supports the idea of using a generic measure along with the disease-specific instruments in terms of cross-validation.

Introduction: Responsiveness is a concept introduced in the mid-eighties by bio-medical researchers. It is considered as a fundamental feature of health-related quality of life questionnaires, which was different from reliability and validity. Responsiveness is defined as the ability of an instrument to detect the minimal clinically important differences. Most authors agree that responsiveness focuses on the ability of a criterion in measuring changes, but there is a wide variety of opinions about the nature of quantified change. This review study was performed to determine the responsiveness by using the valid and available articles. Methods: Keywords of "responsiveness" and "quality of life" were searched in Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), ProQuest, PsycINFO, Science Direct, Scopus, and Medline databases. Results: Multiple definitions for responsiveness and different procedures for calculating it were investigated in various studies. A total of 30 articles were used as references. Responsiveness has been divided into two groups: External and internal. "Internal responsiveness" is defined as the ability of a measure to change over a specified time frame. "External responsiveness" reflects the extent to which changes in a measure over a specified time frame relate to corresponding changes in a reference measure of health status. Conclusion: Despite the fact that some authors consider the responsiveness as the most basic characteristics for assessment of a tool, its measurement methodology is different. Meanwhile, there are different methods to assess responsiveness, but the researchers used one of them, and in development and validation of quality of life questionnaires must be regarded. Purpose: The present study examined the internal responsiveness of the short-form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and its ability to differentiate between patients with and without pre- and postoperative complaints as well as other clinical variables. Methods: The sample consisted of 97 patients undergoing surgical third molar removal. The OHIP-14 was filled in preoperatively, on each postoperative day for a week and once more after 1 month. In addition, pre- and postoperative status was measured along with other clinical variables. Results: The OHIP-14 is able to differentiate between the first preoperative day ( M = 16.85, SD = 5.35) and all the days within the postoperative week (first day M = 29.46, SD = 9.32). One month postoperatively, mean OHIP scores are reduced to preoperative levels. In addition, differences could be shown between patients with and without pre- ( M = 18.9, SD = 8.1 vs. M = 16.2, SD = 3.9) and postoperative complaints ( M = 18.9, SD = 8.1 vs. M = 16.2, SD = 3.9), partial (preop; M = 17.8, SD = 6.8, postoperative; M = 27.4, SD = 7.7) and complete mucosa coverage (preop; M = 15.9, SD = 3.2, postoperative; M = 29.5, SD = 10.6) and the level of impaction (Pell and Gregory classification) of the third molar (3B showing the highest increase in the mean OHIP score). Conclusions: The OHIP-14 can be considered internally responsive to changes in impacts of oral conditions as a result of surgical third molar removal and is able to differentiate the effect of several clinical variables. Summary Objectives This study was aimed at determining the internal and external responsiveness of the Persian version of the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (called ATSHA), Persian version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), and Praat scales among patients with vocal mass lesions and secondary muscle tension dysphonia. Study Design Prospective, within-participant repeated measures. Method Thirty patients with vocal fold nodules, polyps, and cysts related to secondary muscle tension dysphonia participated in the study. The measures of interest and videostroboscopy examination were used before and after treatment. The Global Perceived Effect questionnaire was used to separate those improved (moderately or greatly improved) and stable (slightly improved) patients. Results The mean standardized response, standardized effect size, and Guyatt analyses indicated high internal responsiveness for the all target parameters of the ATSHA, total score of the VHI, and two parameters of the Praat (0.8<). There was poor correlation between the videostroboscopy and the other target scales (r Pearson = −0.1–0.1). The receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated that all the target scales did not significantly separate those improved and stable subjects (area under the curve = 0), except for the overall severity and roughness parameters of the ATSHA scale (area under the curve = 1). Conclusion This study recommends both the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice and the VHI scales to show voice therapy changes. The target voice scale changes were not able to predict the videostroboscopy changes as external standard. Furthermore, we recommend that the overall severity and roughness may properly classify those improved and stable patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
