4. Research progress survey on interactive evolutionary computation.

Abstract

We report our research progress on interactive evolutionary computation (IEC). Following description of IEC features, we present our research on IEC user modeling, acceleration of IEC search, several IEC frameworks, evolutionary multi-objective optimization with IEC, and IEC for human science. IEC research is categorized into three fields in general; major part of IEC papers is IEC application-oriented research; almost all the others are research that aims to reduce IEC user fatigue; and very little work researches the use of IEC for human science. In particular, IEC is a data analysis and processing method and tool for the discovery of human psychological and physiological knowledge. We include several of our IEC application-oriented research projects in this paper, and focus on two other research directions, i.e., IEC algorithm research to reduce user fatigue, and IEC for human science research. Abstract

In this study, we apply an artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm to the interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) method for the multimodal retrieval of candidate solutions in a Kansei space having multimodal preferences. Previous IEC methods often used a genetic algorithm (GA) method for evolutionary algorithm; retrieving multimodal candidates using these methods were difficult. Therefore, we propose an IEC method with the ABC algorithm for the multimodal and simultaneous retrieval of candidate solutions. We perform numerical simulations with a pseudo user that imitates multimodal preferences as target candidate solutions, instead of a real user. The practical aspect of the proposed method assumes to employ user gaze information for evaluating candidates. Moreover, we set the numerical simulation condition based on a real situation. The results show that the proposed method was more effective for retrieving multimodal candidates than the compared method for practical numbers of candidates and generations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) has demonstrated significant success in addressing numerous real-world problems that are challenging to quantify mathematically or are inadequately evaluated using conventional computational models. This success arises from IEC's ability to effectively amalgamate evolutionary computation (EC) algorithms with expert knowledge and user preferences. These problems encompass the creative and personalized generation of products, art, and sound; the design optimization of communication systems, environments, and pharmaceuticals; and expert support in areas such as portfolio selection and hearing aid fitting, among others. Despite significant advancements in IEC over the past two decades, no major comprehensive survey encompassing all aspects of IEC research has been conducted since 2001. This article aims to address this gap by providing a comprehensive survey and an enriched definition and scope of IEC, along with innovative ideas for future research in this field. The proposed IEC definition more clearly reflects the mechanism and current research status of the IEC. Additionally, the survey categorizes IEC research into five distinct directions from a problem-oriented perspective: interactive evolutionary computation algorithms, IEC algorithm improvements, evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) with IEC, human perception studies with IEC, and IEC applications. Each direction is meticulously explored, elucidating its contents and key features, while providing a concise summary of pertinent IEC studies. Finally, the survey investigates several promising future trends in IEC, analyzing them through the lens of these five directions and considering the current perspective of computational intelligence, artificial intelligence, and human-machine interaction. 10. Geometric guides for interactive evolutionary design

Abstract

This thesis describes the addition of novel Geometric Guides to a generative Computer-Aided Design (CAD) application that supports early-stage concept generation. The application generates and evolves abstract 3D shapes, used to inspire the form of new product concepts. It was previously a conventional Interactive Evolutionary system where users selected shapes from evolving populations. However, design industry users wanted more control over the shapes, for example by allowing the system to influence the proportions of evolving forms. The solution researched, developed, integrated and tested is a more cooperative human-machine system combining classic user interaction with innovative geometric analysis. In the literature review, different types of Interactive Evolutionary Computation (IEC), Pose Normalisation (PN), Shape Comparison, and Minimum-Volume Bounding Box approaches are compared, with some of these technologies identified as applicable for this research. Using its Application Programming Interface, add-ins for the Siemens NX CAD system have been developed and integrated with an existing Interactive Evolutionary CAD system. These add-ins allow users to create a Geometric Guide (GG) at the start of a shape exploration session. Before evolving shapes can be compared with the GG, they must be aligned and scaled (known as Pose Normalisation in the literature). Computationally-efficient PN has been achieved using geometric functions such as Bounding Box for translation and scaling, and Principle Axes for the orientation. A shape comparison algorithm has been developed that is based on the principle of non-intersecting volumes. This algorithm is also implemented with standard, readily available geometric functions, is conceptually simple, accessible to other researchers and also offers appropriate efficacy. Objective geometric testing showed that the PN and Shape Comparison methods developed are suitable for this guiding application and can be efficiently adapted to enhance an Interactive Evolutionary Design system. System performance with different population sizes was examined to indicate how best to use the new guiding capabilities to assist users in evolutionary shape searching. This was backed up by participant testing research into two user interaction strategies. A Large Background Population (LBP) approach where the GG is used to select a sub-set of shapes to show to the user was shown to be the most effective. The inclusion of Geometric Guides has taken the research from the existing aesthetic focused tool to a system capable of application to a wider range of engineering design problems. This system supports earlier design processes and ideation in conceptual design and allows a designer to experiment with ideas freely to interactively explore populations of evolving solutions. The design approach has been further improved, and expanded beyond the previous quite limited scope of form exploration.

Abstract

The design of a freight loading pattern is often conducted by skilled workers, who handle unquantifiable objectives and/or preferences. Our previous study presented an automatic construction technique for loading algorithms using genetic programming-based hyper-heuristics; however, this technique is only applicable to fully quantifiable loading problems. Thus, the approach described in this paper integrates an interactive framework with users into our previous technique to automatically construct algorithms that derive loading patterns adapted to user objectives and/or preferences. Thus, once a loading algorithm has been derived with user interactions, it can be reused to obtain the preferred loading patterns on other problems without any additional interactions. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can produce loading algorithms adapted for user preferences under a limit of 50 human interactions. Further, we also show that the derived loading algorithms can be applicable to different loading situations without any additional user interactions. Thus, these observations suggest the benefit of our approaches in reducing the burden placed on skilled workers for practical LPD tasks.

Abstract

An interactive evolutionary algorithm (IEA) is powerful for solving personalized search when the user's preference can be well caught, expressed, and applied in the process of searching. Hybrid recommendation by articulating the content-based and collaborative filtering techniques is popular and effective for the personalized recommendation, but has not been developed to improve the performance of IEA for fulfilling the personalized search. Accordingly, we here propose an enhanced interactive estimation of distribution algorithm by designing dual-probabilistic models based on the hybrid recommendation for personalized search. The concept of hybrid personalized search is first defined from the viewpoint of using not only the historical search information but also the social or group preference. A dual-probabilistic model by sufficiently combining the content-based and collaborative filtering is presented and used to design the effective interactive estimation of distribution algorithm (IEDA). The probabilistic model is directly combined with the initialization of IEDA for illuminating the sparsity of the traditional IEA in encoding. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in fast and efficient searching with a lower computational cost is experimentally illustrated by two typical personalized searches on movies and TV series described with documents.

Abstract

Design is fundamental to software development. Indeed, early lifecycle software engineering design is crucial and has significant impact of subsequent development activities. Inferior designs can result in deleterious down-stream consequences. Therefore improving the traceability, structural integrity and elegance of software design has significant potential for enhancing software development productivity. However, early lifecycle software design is a demanding and non-trivial task for software engineers to perform and current computational tool support for software engineers is limited. Thus to address this limitation, this thesis investigates the potential of interactive evolutionary search and complementary computational intelligence to enable the exploration and discovery of useful and interesting software designs relating to the design problem at hand. To enable evolutionary search and exploration of possible design solutions, a novel, discrete, object-based representation of both design problem and design solution is proposed. Associated genetic operators including self-adapting mutation are also proposed. Experiments show that this novel representation enables highly effective search and exploration of the software design solution space. Next, software agents are introduced to facilitate an interactive framework for natural collaborative designer / computer interaction. Empirical investigations reveal that colourful visualisation of software designs engages the designer. Furthermore, with enhanced generation of multiple candidate designs, opportunities for periods of designer reflection are presented thus enabling sudden design discovery. Design elegance is an important but complex factor in software design. Four novel quantitative elegance measures are proposed which enhance the interactive design experience by selecting elegant software designs for designer evaluation. Using designer elegance evaluation as reward, reward-based machine learning is exploited to steer a dynamic, multi-objective search according to designer elegance intentions. Designer interactivity is further enhanced by a dynamic, fitness-proportionate interactive interval, which judiciously varies the number of evolutionary generations between interactions to promote search and exploration and further reduce use fatigue. The integration of interactive, dynamic evolutionary search with software agents and reward-based learning is found to produce an engaging, compelling interactive experience for software designers, successfully enabling the search, exploration and discovery of fruitful, interesting and useful early lifecycle software designs.

Abstract

Design is a complicated and sophisticated process with numerous existing theories trying to describe it. To verify theories and quantitatively describe the design process, design experiment, and data analysis are crucial and inevitable. However, applying data analysis in the design experiment is tricky and design data is not fully utilized in many aspects. To explore the potential of design experiment data, this paper introduces data-driven research based on an interior design experiment, aiming to reveal the category and process of design by conducting data analysis, visualization, and recommendation. We introduce an interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) design experiment that deals with a simplified interior design task and has already been tested on 230 subjects. Using the data gathered during the experiment, we conduct data analysis and visualization involving methods including Holistic color interval and K-means clustering to show categories and processes in design. Additionally, we train a content-based recommendation system with experiment data to capture user preference and make the IEC system more efficient and intelligent. The analysis and visualization show clear design categories and capture an evident trend towards the final design outcome. The application of the recommendation system brings a prominent improvement to the IEC system. This research shows the great potential of the various data-driven methods in design research. Abstract

Interactive Evolutionary Computation (IEC) is known as a method reflecting user's feelings on media contents. However, user's fatigue caused by repetitive evaluation tasks remains as a problem. The authors proposed continuous evaluation‐based IEC (CEIEC) that divides user's evaluation tasks into multiple days, while users finish the task in 1 day in conventional IECs. The efficiency of CEIEC was shown by the 2‐day experiment: the highest fitness was obtained in the final generation of the second day. The purpose of this study is to show further efficiencies of CEIEC by comparing experiment. The target of search was designing a 'bright' sign sound. Forty‐two subjects were divided into two groups: half of them performed the 2‐day task of CEIEC, and the other half performed the 1‐day task of IEC. After that, they evaluated representative three sounds. A gradual decrease in update of the solution candidates and a shrink of the search space were observed in both conditions. Furthermore, the same trend of increases in fitness was observed. These results showed the efficiencies of CEIEC in terms of having the same searching ability as the ordinal IEC. Abstract

A new system of artificial life called Lenia (from Latin lenis "smooth"), a two-dimensional cellular automaton with continuous spacetime state and generalized local rule, is reported. Computer simulations show that Lenia supports a great diversity of complex autonomous patterns or "life forms" bearing resemblance to real-world microscopic organisms. More than 400 species in 18 families have been identified, many discovered via interactive evolutionary computation. They differ from other cellular automata patterns in being geometric, metameric, fuzzy, resilient, adaptive and rule generic. Basic observations of the system are presented regarding the properties of spacetime and basic settings. A broad survey of the life forms is provided and categorized into a hierarchical taxonomy, and their distribution is mapped in the parameter hyperspace. Their morphological structures and behavioral dynamics are described, and possible mechanisms of their self-organization, self-direction and plasticity are proposed. Abstract

A user-centric memetic algorithm (UcMA) represents an instance of the so-called interactive evolutionary computation, in which the subjacent algorithm that interacts with a human consists of a memetic algorithm (MA) that manages knowledge of the problem with the aim of accelerating the solution search process. UcMAs have been proved to be effective optimization methods to tackle problems that require human intervention (in the form of evaluations/decisions). This paper proposes two generic schemas to distribute a number of (interactive/proactive) UcMAs that act as independent agents and, eventually, synchronize to interchange information. These schemas can be instantiated via a number of parameters (including the cooperation topology) to develop novel 2-dimensional spatially structured cooperative UcMAs. These algorithms can be viewed as specific instances of the so-called parallel MAs but with the particularity that they are especially suited to dealing with combinatorial problems whose solving requires subjective evaluations. An experimental study over microarray ordering problems is done including distinct instances of an NP-hard problem with strong implications in biomedicine and molecular biology, namely the gene ordering problem. Abstract

Deep interactive evolution (DeepIE) combines the capacity of interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) to capture a user’s preference with the domain-specific robustness of a trained generative adversarial network (GAN) generator, allowing the user to control the GAN output through evolutionary exploration of the latent space. However, the traditional GAN latent space presents feature entanglement, which limits the practicability of possible applications of DeepIE. In this paper, we implement DeepIE within a style-based generator from a StyleGAN model trained on the WikiArt dataset and propose StyleIE, a variation of DeepIE that takes advantage of the secondary disentangled latent space in the style-based generator. We performed two AB/BA crossover user tests that compared the performance of DeepIE against StyleIE for art generation. Self-rated evaluations of the performance were collected through a questionnaire. Findings from the tests suggest that StyleIE and DeepIE perform equally in tasks with open-ended goals with relaxed constraints, but StyleIE performs better in close-ended and more constrained tasks.
