Abstract

This article proposes the methods to enhance the depth value approximation in 3D Image Based Modelling for complex object. Fundamentally, the fast and accurate depth value approximation is crucial as the 3D modelling used in virtual and augmented reality applications, reverse engineering, and the architecture. Therefore, the enhanced method must be robust against the challenges with noise, complexity, distortion and longer processing time. In this experiment, five small and complex objects were captured using a turntable, laptop, and a webcam. The feature points between images were tracked and matched using good features to tracks and Pyramidal Lucas Kanade's optical flow. Next, the depth value was approximated using trigonometry equation. To enhance the accuracy, the noise filtering, and Inverse Perspective Mapping (IPM) were introduced. The results show that the average error based on the approximated width and depth dimensions was 3.27% and 6.88% compared with the actual object. Furthermore, the processing speed was 1519 points per second. Therefore, this method enhanced the depth value approximation, which can be used to build the full texture 3D model in future.

Abstract

Studies based on tracking tree species composition are very important for researchers to conserve the ecosystem. The information about tree species composition can be obtained through physical tagging with markers. However, this method is tedious and may harm the structure of trees. Besides, it is time consuming for researchers to track the information for future research. Thus, this paper will propose a mobile tracking application (ARTSC) which integrates the geographical information and mobile augmented reality technique for tracking the tree species composition. By using camera on the smart phone, the information about the species composition will be overlaid on top of the real image. Thus, this application can be one of the alternative methods for researchers to track information about the tree species.

Abstract

Surgical training systems based on virtual reality (VR) are highly desired as they offer a cost effective and efficient alternative compared to traditional training methods. Traditional surgical training methods require cadavers or plastic models which are costly. Cadavers cannot be used repeatedly and training with plastic models cannot provide the realistic experience. This paper describes a visualization to show the use of newly design jig and fixture for computer-assisted knee replacement surgery. Orthopedic surgeons found it difficult to align the existing jig with the computer-assisted device during the operation and it is time consuming to place it at the right position. A newly design jig and fixture has been proposed to solve this problem. Visualization is needed to show the surgeons on how it will be used in the computer-assisted knee replacement surgery. Virtual models used in this visualization are constructed from the actual equipment and real human dataset.
