Abstract

The recombination reaction H O2 () → HO2 () was studied by laser flash photolysis in a high pressure flow cell, over the temperature range 300–900 K, the pressure range 1.5–950 bar and in the bath gases M = He and N2. Earlier experiments by Hahn et al. (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2004, 6, 1997) in the bath gas M = Ar were also extended. The data were analyzed in terms of unimolecular rate theory employing new calculations of relevant molecular parameters. Improved energy transfer parameters for the bath gases M = He, Ar, N2, and H2O could thus be obtained and complete falloff curves were constructed. In the case of water, the high pressure rates well connect with pulse radiolysis results obtained in supercritical water by Janik et al. (J. Phys. Chem. A 2007, 111, 79). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Novel member of polymetalloporphines, namely manganese polymetalloporphine of type I (pMnP-I) obtained by ion exchange from magnesium polyporphine of type I (pMgP-I) is reported for the first time and compared to its cobalt analogue (pCoP-I). Both polymer films have been obtained via two-step procedure: demetaladon of the pMgP-I electrode film via its exposure to trifluoroacetic acid solution, resulting in formation of the metal-free polyporphine of type I (pH(2)P-I) followed by electrochemically induced incorporation of Co or Mn ions from the acetonitrile solution of cobalt and manganese perchlorates. A further oxidative transformation of pCoP-I, polymer films has led to the corresponding polyporphines of type II, pCoP-II and pMnP-II, possessing such unique features as condensed polymer structure with a very high density of active sites and high electronic conductivity within a very broad potential range including the one corresponding to the neutral (uncharged) state of the polymer matrix. Both polymers of type II also exhibit interesting electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen electroreduction in aqueous neutral (pH 6.7) and alkaline (pH 13) media which was evaluated under cyclic voltammetric and steady-state conditions. The results demonstrate that the efficiency (regardless of the electrolyte) of both polymetalloporphines is comparable to bare platinum electrode. The effect of annealing of polymer-modified electrodes on their catalytic properties has also been considered.

Abstract

International audience; The evolution of the switching field between stable states in MgO/CoFeB/Ta/CoFeB/MgO/GaAs and Pt/Co/Ir/Co/Pt/Ta/SiO2 synthetic ferrimagnets with perpendicular anisotropy as a function of the magnetic field sweeping rate (MFSR) 0.1-10 4 Oe/s has been studied. The most significant effect of the MFSR is an inversion of interstate transitions sequence. In the MgO/CoFeB/Ta/CoFeB/MgO/GaAs heterostructure, the increase of MFSR switches the dominant mechanism of magnetization reversal from propagation of domain walls to a nucleation of reversed magnetization areas. In Pt/Co/Ir/Co/Pt/Ta/ SiO2, the MFSR affects the final domain state of the transition, starting from the initial antiparallel configuration of the synthetic ferrimagnet.

Abstract

International audience; A new member of the polyporphine series-cobalt polyporphine of type I (pCoP-I)-was prepared from the starting magnesium polyporphine of type I (pMgP-I) by ion exchange, i.e. by sequential processing of the pMgP-I polymer film on the electrode surface with solutions of trifluoroacetic acid (forming metalfree polyporphine of type I, pH(2)P-I) and cobalt(II) acetate in organic solvents. The completeness of each stage of ion exchange can be judged from the change in the electrochemical and spectral characteristics of the obtained polymer films of unsubstituted porphine (?H2P-I) and cobalt porphine (pCoP-I) of type I. Oxidative transformation of this polyporphine pCoP-I was performed, which led to the formation of additional bonds between the neighboring porphine units in the polymer film (transition of polymer of type I into polymer of type II, pCoP-II). The behavior of the polymer films of cobalt polyporphine of types I and II in oxygen electroreduction was studied. The films showed catalytic activity in this process.

Abstract

International audience; Ion solvation process has been analysed for the spherically symmetrical system where an ion is located inside a cavity surrounded by an isotropic nonlocal dielectric medium. It has been proven that for any dielectric properties of the medium, the electric field outside the cavity as well as the ion solvation energy depend only on the total ion charge but not of the particular distribution of the ion charge density inside the cavity. These characteristics remain unchanged if the charge is displaced from the external boundary of the cavity into it. Analytical formulas for them have been derived for a particular model of the nonlocal dielectric function. Comparison of results for the solvation energy on the basis of this new theory and of the conventional approach (disregarding the existence of the cavity) shows a significant difference between their predictions if the ion charge is displaced inside the ion cavity.

Abstract

According to band structure calculations, the Fermi surface of the quasi-two dimensional metal $\theta$-(ET) 4 ZnBr 4 (C 6 H 4 Cl 2) illustrates the linear chain of coupled orbits model. Accordingly, de Haas-van Alphen oscillations spectra recorded in pulsed magnetic field of up to 55 T evidence many Fourier components, the frequency of which are linear combinations of the frequencies relevant to the closed $\alpha$ and the magnetic breakdown $\beta$ orbits. The field and temperature dependence of these component's amplitude are quantitatively accounted for by analytic calculations including, beyond the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula, second order terms in damping factors due to the oscillation of the chemical potential as the magnetic field varies. Whereas these second order terms are negligible for the orbits $\alpha$, $\beta$ and 2$\beta$ -- $\alpha$, they are solely responsible for the 'forbidden orbit' $\beta$ -- $\alpha$ and its harmonic and have a significant influence on Fourier components such as 2$\alpha$ and $\beta$ + $\alpha$, yielding strongly non-Lifshitz-Kosevich behaviour in the latter case.

Building-integrated photovoltaics is an emerging field that demands approaches to deliver efficient and flexible photovoltaic cells at a low cost. In this work, high-quality single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films were utilized as an electrode for the hole-transport-layer (HTL)-free perovskite solar cells using a methodology compatible with scalable low-temperature roll-to-roll fabrication. We report a simple passivation strategy of the perovskite/SWCNT interface using methylammonium iodide, which dramatically enhances the performance of the cells, delivering power conversion efficiencies of up to 16.7%. We believe that the device configuration presented here will facilitate the development of a generation of bifacial perovskite solar cells for integrated photovoltaics and tandems.

Abstract

International audience; Electron donor-acceptor liquid crystals have been attracting considerable attention due to possible applications in optoelectronics and photonics. The creation of such charge transfer complexes is a powerful and flexible instrument for modifying the structures and properties compared to those of the initial components. In the present work, such an approach is exemplified on new complexes formed via non-covalent interactions of triphenylene discotics, namely, 2,3,6,7,10,11hexakis(pentyloxy) triphenylene (H5T) and 2-(acryloyloxypropyloxy)-3,6,7,10,11-pentapentyloxtriphenylene (TPh-3A), with an electron acceptor, β-(2,4,7-trinitro-9fluorenylideneaminooxy) propionic acid (TNF-carb). The structure of thin supported films of H5T, TPh-3A and their blends with TNF-carb was investigated by grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering using a synchrotron source. At room temperature, the pristine discotics crystallize in orthorhombic unit cells whereas the selfassembly of H5T and TPh-3A with TNF-carb results in a double gyroid and hexagonal phases, respectively. Formation of the double gyroid phase with the lattice parameter of 36.5 Å is driven by phase separation between the aromatic and alkyl regions of the system. It is supposed that the TNF-carb molecules of the complex are positioned in the nodes of the structure while the H5T molecules are located in the struts adjoining the nodes via triple junctions. For the hexagonal crystal of the TPh-3A /TNF-carb complex, the acceptor molecules are likely located in the intersticies between the neighboring supramolecular columns of TPh-3A. The molecular structures of the blends were also explored by means of FTIR spectroscopy. A detailed FTIR spectra analysis illustrates fine changes in intermolecular bonds. For example, the initially dimerized acceptor molecules totally disappear in the complex structures whereas in TPh-3A/TNF-carb additional H-bonds between the carboxylate group in TNF-carb and the ester group of TPh-3A form. The experimental data allows putting forward possible molecular models of the complex structures.

Abstract

The Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation spectra of the beta''-(BEDT-TTF)4(NH4)[Cr(C2O4)\_3].DMF organic metal have been studied in pulsed magnetic fields of up to either 36 T at ambient pressure or 50 T under hydrostatic pressures of up to 1 GPa. The ambient pressure SdH oscillation spectra can be accounted for by up to six fundamental frequencies which points to a rather complex Fermi surface (FS). A noticeable pressure-induced modification of the FS topology is evidenced since the number of frequencies observed in the spectra progressively decreases as the pressure increases. Above 0.8 GPa, only three compensated orbits are observed, as it is the case for several other isostructural salts of the same family at ambient pressure. Contrary to other organic metals, of which the FS can be regarded as a network of orbits, no frequency combinations are observed for the studied salt, likely due to high magnetic breakdown gap values or (and) high disorder level evidenced by Dingle temperatures as large as about 7 K., Comment: To be published in European Physical Journal B

Abstract

International audience; Irradiation of the heterostructure glass/Ta/Pt/GdFeCo/IrMn/Pt by 50 fs ultra-short laser pulses causes local thinning of the film down to~12-30 nm depth. These pits are distinguished by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), while their stray magnetic fields were detected by Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM). The crater was formed due to layer-by-layer evaporation of the material. No sign of melting was found in the vicinity of the crater at subthreshold laser fluence below 12-15 mJ/cm 2 , but exceeding of the threshold caused destruction of the layers. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) revealed depletion of Gd, Fe and Co, responsible for magnetic properties of the subthreshold crater. The amplitude of the local MOKE signal decreased down to 1.7 times in the irradiated area, while thinning of the ferromagnetic layer was 1.1 times. No proportional change of magneti-zation was caused by bias effect of IrMn layer. Decreased elastic modulus was found inside the subthreshold crater in the irradiated areas. Laser engineering of the surface of GdFeCo thin films opens the way for local control of energy balance between magnetic anisotropy, exchange coupling and Zeeman energy and creation of separated sectors for capture, storage and analysis of the ferromagnetic nanoparticles.

Abstract

A combination of in situ nanocalorimetry with simultaneous nanofocus 2D Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) was used to study polymorphic behaviour and structure formation in a single micro-drop of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) with defined thermal history. We were able to generate, detect, and characterize a number of different iPP morphologies using our custom-built ultrafast chip-based nanocalorimetry instrument designed for use with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) high intensity nanofocus X-ray beamline facility. The detected iPP morphologies included monoclinic alpha-phase crystals, mesophase, and mixed morphologies with different mesophase/crystalline compositional ratios. Monoclinic crystals formed from the mesophase became unstable at heating rates above 40 K s-1 and showed melting temperatures as low as ~30 K below those measured for iPP crystals formed by slow cooling. We also studied the real-time melt crystallization of nanogram-sized iPP samples. Our analysis revealed a mesophase nucleation time of around 1 s and the co-existence of mesophase and growing disordered crystals at high supercooling ≤328 K. The further increase of the iPP crystallization temperature to 338 K changed nucleation from homogeneous to heterogeneous. No mesophase was detected above 348 K. Low supercooling (≥378 K) led to the continuous growth of the alpha-phase crystals. In conclusion, we have, for the first time, measured the mesophase nucleation time of supercooled iPP melted under isothermal crystallization conditions using a dedicated experimental setup designed to allow simultaneous ultrafast chip-based nanocalorimetry and nanofocus X-ray diffraction analyses. We also provided experimental evidence that upon heating, the mesophase converts directly into thermodynamically stable monoclinic alpha-phase crystals via perfection and reorganization and not via partial melting. Abstract

International audience; novel approach to obtaining nanocomposite materials using anionic sequential polymerization and post-synthetic esterification reactions with chemically modified graphene sheets (CMGs) is reported. The anionically synthesized diblock copolymer precursors of the PS-b-PI-OH type were grafted to the chemically modified –COOH groups of the CMGs, giving rise to the final composite materials, namely polystyrene-b-poly(isoprene)-g-CMGs, which exhibited enhanced physicochemical properties. The successful synthesis was determined through multiple molecular characterization techniques together with thermogravimetric analysis for the verification of increased thermal stability, and the structure/properties relationship was justified through transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the arrangement of CMGs utilizing lamellar and cylindrical morphologies was studied in order to determine the effect of the loaded CMGs in the adopted topologies

Abstract

International audience; The paper investigates how the surface relief of an implant affects cell behavior. Currently, most implant manufacturers claim the key impact biocompatibility factor to be surface micro-roughness. We suppose that the interaction between cells and implants also depends on such relief peculiarities as continuous or discontinuous topography, subcellular distance between peaks and presence of porous oxide layer. We have developed the laser processing conditions that provide three different reliefs: «open grooves», «grid» and «close grooves». Along with the micro-roughness characteristics the reliefs differ with their deepness and period of grooves. The surface composition analysis results have shown a sandwich structure consisting of Ti → TiO → Ti 2 O 3 Nx → TiO 2 (anatase) → TiO 2 (rutile). The wettability study has demonstrated superhydrophilicity (CA is 0 •) for all reliefs. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of hMSCs proliferation and osteogenic differentiation was performed for 20 days. In vitro study has revealed the topography affects the spatial orientation of cells. The shape and size of the cell nuclei vary with different topographies. We have found continuous «open grooves» structures with the subcellular to cellular period are beneficial for cells' life-sustaining activity. Discontinuous «grid» structures with individual slots might not provide cells with mobility with the least external mechanical effect compared to «open grooves».

Abstract

International audience; Using Micro-Particle Image Velocimetry (µPIV), the convective flow inside a silicone oil droplet was investigated in details during its formation in coaxial capillaries under co-flow in a water/glycerol mixture continuous phase. The analysis of µPIV measured flow field revealed that two characteristic flow areas exist in the droplet in formation: an inflow zone and a circulation zone. The intensity of vortex flow in these zones was estimated by calculating the average angular velocity of these vortices under the condition of no shear for different dispersed phase and continuous phase flow rates and for different viscosity ratios between the two phases. The evolution of the vortex flow pattern inside the droplet was investigated thoroughly all the way from the step of their formation to the step of free-moving droplet. The results of this study are important for understanding the mixing processes inside the droplet at different stages of its formation.

Abstract

International audience; This work is focused on the mechanisms of the dripping and jetting flow modes of viscoelastic semi-dilute polyacrylamide aqueous solutions co-flowing with silicone oil in co-axial capillaries. A phase diagram of the dripping, jetting, and intermediate flow modes is established. It was found that in the dripping mode, the elongation velocity of the filament between the terminal droplet and the inner capillary is controlled solely by the continuous phase rate. At the same time, the decrease in the filament diameter is due to both stretching and outflow of the polymer solution into the terminal droplet. In the jetting mode, the thread diameter was found to evolve in three stages. In the first stage, the average jet velocity increases, whereas in the second and third stages, it becomes constant and corresponds to the velocity of the continuous phase. The transition from the second to the third stage is defined by the appearance of capillary waves resulting in the formation of the beads-on-string structure. In the third stage, the filament diameter between the neighbor beads decreases exponentially and is governed by the relaxation time, which strongly depends on polymer concentration, but does not depend on the continuous phase flow rate. A simple physical model was proposed for describing the evolution of dimensions of filaments and beads during development of jet capillary instability. The universal character of the evolution of filaments and beads sizes, which is independent of concentration of semi-diluted polymer solutions and flow rates of the continuous phase, is revealed.

Abstract

Novel hybrid materials of the PB-b-P(o-Bn-L-Tyr) and PI-b-P(o-Bn-L-Tyr) type (where PB: 1,4/1,2-poly(butadiene), PI: 3,4/1,2/1,4-poly(isoprene) and P(o-Bn-L-Tyr): poly(ortho-benzyl-L-tyrosine)) were synthesized through anionic and ring-opening polymerization under high-vacuum techniques. All final materials were molecularly characterized through infrared spectroscopy (IR) and proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR) in order to confirm the successful synthesis and the polydiene microstructure content. The stereochemical behavior of secondary structures (α-helices and β-sheets) of the polypeptide segments combined with the different polydiene microstructures was also studied. The influence of the α-helices and β-sheets, as well as the polydiene chain conformations on the thermal properties (glass transition temperatures, thermal stability, α- and β-relaxation) of the present biobased hybrid copolymers, was investigated through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dielectric spectroscopy (DS). The obtained morphologies in thin films for all the synthesized materials via atomic force microscopy (AFM) indicated the formation of polypeptide fibrils in the polydiene matrix. Abstract

International audience; Linear and non-linear copolymers of the PB-b-PI sequence [PB: polybutadiene of high 1,4-microstructure (∼92%) and PI: polyisoprene of high 3,4-microstructure (∼55–60%)] and their corresponding miktoarm star copolymers of the PB(PI3,4)2 and PB(PI3,4)3 type were synthesized by combining anionic polymerization and selective chlorosilane chemistry. Molecular characteristics, thermal properties and structure/properties relationship are reported for the specific copolymers and especially the self-assembly is of major importance and interest due to the nature of the blocks. The identical electron densities between the two polydienes led to impossible morphological characterization through small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and only transmission electron microscopy results verify the adopted morphology for each copolymer, justifying the assumption that the segment–segment interaction parameter between the two polydienes of high 1,4-microstructure (∼92%) for the PB and ∼55–60% 3,4-microstructure for the PI is well above zero. The consistency of the bulk morphology results of this study compared with those of the extensively studied system of the PS(PI)n=1,2,3 type (PS: polystyrene), were unexpectedly coherent. High chain flexibility provided by the two polydiene segments, leads to promising properties unattainable from corresponding thermoplastic triblock copolymers of these polydienes with PS (PS-b-PI-b-PS, PS-b-PB-b-PS), especially for rheological studies.

Abstract

The effect of a protective coating of fused lithium borate, Li3BO3, on the physicochemical and electrochemical characteristics of LiCoO2 has been studied. A cathode material produced by the SCS method using binary organic fuel, glycine and citric acid. The influence of the experiment conditions on the morphology, crystal structure and specific surface of lithium cobaltite was studied. Electrochemical testing of LiCoO2∙nLi3BO3 samples, n = 5 and 7 mass %, has been performed in the cathode Li|Li+-electrolyte|LiCoO2∙nLi3BO3 half-cell using 1M LiPF6 in EC/DMC mixture (1:1) as electrolyte in the 2.7-4.3 V range at normalized discharge current С/10, С/5, С/2. The maximal initial discharge capacity of 185 mAh/g was detected for the samples with 5 mass % Li3BO3. The coulomb efficiency of optimal materials in the 40th cycle was 99.1%.
