Abstract

Event: SPIE Optics + Optoelectronics, 2023, Prague, Czech Republic; High-harmonic generation (HHG) in gaseous media is a workhorse tool in attosecond science. Its description origins from the microscopic scale of a single atom or molecule interacting with a driving IR-laser pulse. However, its practical realization usually employs a macroscopic volume of the gas. The macroscopic aspect aggregates all the microscopic emitters and brings novel physical mechanisms that drive the generation. One of the key mechanisms within the macroscopic scale is the shaping of the driving pulse due to the non-linear response of the medium. We present a comprehensive numerical model describing and coupling the physics on both scales. The model consists of different modules that provide different levels of approximation to choose an optimal trade-off between accuracy and computational cost. We then use it to address two generation schemes, where we provide a detailed picture together with experimental realizations. The first scheme uses a long medium homogeneously pre-ionized by an electrical discharge to optimize the phase-matching of the harmonic signal. This scheme allows, in particular, for optimizing HHG in long media where the control is difficult because the driving pulse undergoes strong reshaping and defocusing due to the non-linear response after the entrance to the medium. The second scheme introduces a mechanism to control the divergence of the harmonic beam in thin targets. The divergence is driven by shaping the wavefront of the driving pulse. This allows for spectrally selective focusing of the harmonic beams without the use of optics, which leads to inevitable losses in the XUV region.

Abstract

Multiferroic particulate composites $(1-x)$ Ba$_{0.95}$Ca$_{0.05}$Ti$_{0.89}$Sn$_{0.11}$O$_3$-$(x)$CoFe$_2$O$_4$ with ($x$ = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) have been prepared by mechanical mixing of the calcined and milled individual ferroic phases. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of both perovskite Ba$_{0.95}$Ca$_{0.05}$Ti$_{0.89}$Sn$_{0.11}$O$_3$ (BCTSn) and spinel CoFe$_2$O$_4$ (CFO) phases without the presence of additional phases. The morphological properties of the composites were provided by using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy. The BCTSn-CFO composites exhibit multiferroic behavior at room temperature, as evidenced by ferroelectric and ferromagnetic hysteresis loops. The magnetoelectric (ME) coupling was measured under a magnetic field up to 10 kOe and the maximum ME response found to be 0.1 mV /cm/ Oe for the composition 0.7 BCTSn-0.3 CFO exhibiting a high degree of pseudo-cubicity and large density.

Disponible en version anglaise et française (dernier document auteur).; International audience; Wir bieten das optische Design eines adaptiven und flexiblen Systems von 4-Quadranten- oder N-Facetten-Spiralspiegeln an, um einen optischen Wirbel auf großen Laserstrahlen zu erzeugen. Durch eine Fernfeldanalyse berechnen wir die Winkelparameter, die die Komponente des Ziel-Laguerre-Gauss-Modus maximieren. Die so erhaltenen modalen Reinheiten sind denen von segmentierten Lamellen oder spiralförmigen Phasenspiegeln sehr ähnlich. Das im Rayleigh-Bereich im Brennpunkt erzielte Beleuchtungsprofil ist regelmäßig, und die Wirkung eines anfänglichen geringen Astigmatismus, der bekanntermaßen die Zirkularität des Beleuchtungsprofils im Brennpunkt bricht, kann abgeschwächt werden. Dieser pauci-adaptive, facettierte Spiegel scheint besonders gut für Ultra-High-Intensity- oder Hochenergie-Lasersysteme geeignet zu sein.; We propose the optical design of an adaptive and flexible 4-quadrant, or N-facet, spirally tiled mirror setup, to generate an optical vortex on large diameter laser systems. From a far-field analysis, we derive the optimal angular parameters that generate the highest contents of the targeted Laguerre-Gaussian mode. The modal purities thus obtained are close to those obtained with standard segmented spiral phase plates or mirrors. The intensity behavior in the focal Rayleigh zone is regular, and the effect of a small laser astigmatism, known to break the circularity of the ring intensity profile at focus, can be corrected. This pauci-adaptive faceted mirror setup appears well suited for use on ultra-high intensity or high energy laser systems.; Nous proposons la conception optique d'un système adaptatif et flexible de miroirs à 4 quadrants, ou à N facettes tuilées en spirale, afin de créer un vortex optique sur des faisceaux laser de grande taille. Par une analyse en champ lointain, nous calculons les paramètres angulaires qui maximisent la composante du mode Laguerre-Gauss ciblé. Les puretés modales ainsi obtenues sont proches de celles obtenues par des lames ou de miroirs de phase spiralée segmentés. Le profil d'éclairement obtenu dans la zone de Rayleigh au foyer est régulier, et l'effet d'un faible astigmatisme initial, connu pour rompre la circularité du profil d'éclairement au foyer, peut être atténué. Ce miroir pauci-adaptatif à facettes tuilées semble particulièrement bien adapté aux systèmes laser de Ultra-Haute Intensité ou de haute énergie.

Abstract

International audience; New multiferroic particulate composites (1-x) Ba0.95Ca0.05Ti0.89Sn0.11O3-(x) CoFe2O4 with (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) have been prepared by mechanical mixing of the calcined and milled individual ferroic phases. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of both perovskite Ba0.95Ca0.05Ti0.89Sn0.11O3 (BCTSn) and spinel CoFe2O4 (CFO) phases without the presence of additional phases. The morphological properties of the composites were provided by using field emission scanning electron microscopy. The BCTSn-CFO composites exhibit multiferroic behavior at room temperature, as evidenced by ferroelectric and ferromagnetic hysteresis loops. For all composites, the converse piezoelectric coefficient was calculated and found to decrease from 203 pm.V-1 to 27 pm.V-1 in pure BCTSn. when the CFO content increases. The magnetoelectric (ME) coupling was measured under a magnetic field up to 10 kOe and the maximum ME response found to be 0.1 mV.cm(-1).Oe(-1) for the composition 0.7 BCTSn-0.3 CFO exhibiting a high degree of pseudo-cubicity and large density.

Abstract

International audience; Some magnetically ordered phases of the Mn5Si3 crystal are proving to be prototypes for the study of thenew fundamental spin physics related to the spontaneous breaking of the time-reversal symmetry despite a zeronet magnetization. Here, we report on a route to grow epitaxial Mn5Si3 thin films on Si(111). To this end, weuse Mn and Si codeposition in a molecular beam epitaxy system and carefully tune the deposition rates, thegrowth temperature, and the annealing temperature. We assessed the silicide phase-formation and morphologyusing reflection high-energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron mi-croscopy (HRTEM) and atomic force microscopy. Layers containing only Mn5Si3 could be stabilized undervery restrictive conditions, by tuning the Mn/Si flux ratio to match the compound stoichiometry and adjustingthe substrate temperature during growth to 443 K. HRTEM imaging revealed the existence of an interfacialamorphous layer of few nanometers thickness. Annealing the heterostructure up to 573 K led to the formationof MnSi at the vicinity of the Mn5Si3/Si(111) interface, which significantly reduced the nucleation barrier ofMn5Si3. High-quality crystalline Mn5Si3 thin films were then formed with the following epitaxial relationships:Mn5Si3 (0001)[011̄0]//MnSi(111)[2̄11]//Si(111)[11̄0]. Our experiments showed that the formation of MnSi isenhanced at a growth temperature above 473 K or for a longer annealing step, while the crystalline quality of theMn5Si3 overlayer is correspondingly degraded leading to textured thin films. The growth pathways and structuralproperties of the manganese silicides can be rationalized in terms of reactions maximizing the free-energylowering rate. Moreover, we found that the magnetic and the magnetotransport properties can be used as anefficient tool to track both Mn5Si3 crystallinity and proportion in the deposited layers.

International audience; We demonstrate absorption-limited high-order harmonic generation by an 800 nm femtosecond laser in argon and krypton. Phase-matching is achieved by pre-ionizing the gas using a weak capillary discharge.

International audience; Nous avons demontré expérimentalement la sélection spectrale d’un groupe d’harmoniques d’ordre elevé XUV au moyen d’une modification des propriétés spatiales du rayonnement XUV. Des simulations ont également montré l’amélioration du profil spatio-temporel d’un train d’impulsions attosecondes après propagation.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, Cu-based sulfides (chalcopyrite CuFeS2, mohite Cu2SnS3, tetrahedrite Cu12Sb4S13, mawsonite Cu6Fe2SnS8, and kesterite Cu2ZnSnS4) were synthesized by industrial milling in an eccentric vibratory mill to demonstrate the scalability of their synthesis. For a comparison, laboratory-scale milling in a planetary mill was performed. The properties of the obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and, in some cases, also by Mössbauer spectroscopy. For the densification of powders, the method of spark plasma sintering was applied to prepare suitable samples for thermoelectric (TE) characterization which created the core of this paper. A comparison of the figure-of-merit ZT, representative of the efficiency of thermoelectric performance, shows that the scaling process of mechanochemical synthesis leads to similar values as compared to using laboratory methods. This makes the cost-effective production of Cu-based sulfides as prospective energy materials for converting heat to electricity feasible. Several new concepts that have been developed involving combinations of natural and synthetic species (tetrahedrite) and nanocomposite formation (tetrahedrite/digenite, mawsonite/stannite) offer sustainable approaches in solid-state chemistry. Mechanochemical synthesis is selected as a simple, one-pot, and facile solid-state synthesis of thermoelectric materials with the capability to reduce, or even eliminate, solvents, toxic gases, and high temperatures with controllable enhanced yields. The synthesis is environmentally friendly and essentially waste-free. The obtained results illustrate the possibility of large-scale deployment of energy-related materials.

International audience; The synthesis of n-type phosphorus-doped diamond is essential for the development of diamond-based bipolar devices. Although demonstrated 20 years ago, it remains a complex problem due to low incorporation efficiency and low maximum concentrations. Previous works showed the deleterious influence of methinophosphide formation in a methane/hydrogen/phosphine plasma on the growth of phosphorous doped diamond using the chemical vapor deposition method. In this work, we investigate the effect of pulsing methane during microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition to avoid the formation of HCP and to increase phosphorus incorporation efficiency and maximum concentration in diamond.

Abstract

International audience; Recently π–d conjugated coordination polymers have received a lot of attention owing to their unique material properties, although synthesis of long and defect‐free polymers remains challenging. Herein we introduce a novel on‐surface synthesis of coordination polymers with quinoidal ligands under ultra‐high vacuum conditions, which enables formation of flexible coordination polymers with lengths up to hundreds of nanometers. Moreover, this procedure allows the incorporation of different transition‐metal atoms with four‐ or two‐fold coordination. Remarkably, the two‐fold coordination mode revealed the formation of wires constituted by (electronically) independent 12‐membered antiaromatic macrocycles linked together through two C−C single bonds.

Abstract

International audience; Small-pore zeolites such as chabazite (CHA) are excellent candidates for the selective separation of CO2; however, the current synthesis involves several steps and the use of organic structure-directing agent (OSDA), increasing their cost and energy requirements. We report the synthesis of small-pore zeolite crystals (aluminosilicate) with CHA-type framework structure by direct synthesis in a colloidal suspension containing a mixture of inorganic cations only (Na+, K+, and Cs+). The location of CO2 molecules in the host structure was revealed by 3D electron diffraction (3D ED). The high sorption capacity for CO2 (3.8 mmol g−1 at 121 kPa), structural stability and regenerability of the discreate CHA zeolite nanocrystals is maintained for 10 consecutive cycles without any visible degradation. The CHA zeolite (Si:Al=2) reaches an almost perfect CO2 storage capacity (8 CO2 per unit cell) and high selectivity (no CH4 was adsorbed).

Abstract

One of the main difficulties to efficiently generating high-order harmonics in long neutral-gas targets is to reach the phase-matching conditions. One issue is that the medium cannot be sufficiently ionized by the driving laser due to plasma defocusing. We propose a method to improve the phase-matching by pre-ionizing the gas using a weak capillary discharge. We have demonstrated this mechanism, for the first time, in absorption-limited XUV generation by an 800 nm femtosecond laser in argon and krypton. The phase-mismatch control ability of our method is confirmed by an analytical model and numerical simulation of the complete generation process. International audience; As far as Water is concerned, a lot of new directives and world concerns highlight among others the need for using ICT technologies, the global healthcare issues, the demand for fresh water, the food/beverage quality and safety, the environmental protection and the security strategies to reduce intentional contamination, all of the above having worldwide massive economic, natural and social impacts. However, despite an increasing demand for adaptability, compacity and performances at ever decreasing costs, the vast majority of water network monitoring systems remains based on sensor nodes with predefined and vertical applicative goals hindering interoperability and increasing costs (OPEX and CAPEX) for deploying new and added value services. Innovative technological products could answer the following acute needs in the field. This chapter introduce advance research works in sensing within two H2020 EU projects: the aqua3S project addressing sensors for Water Security purposes and LOTUS addressing low-cost multiparameter sensors for water quality.

Abstract

Collisionless shocks are ubiquitous in the Universe and are held responsible for the production of nonthermal particles and high-energy radiation. In the absence of particle collisions in the system, theory shows that the interaction of an expanding plasma with a pre-existing electromagnetic structure (as in our case) is able to induce energy dissipation and allow shock formation. Shock formation can alternatively take place when two plasmas interact, through microscopic instabilities inducing electromagnetic fields that are able in turn to mediate energy dissipation and shock formation. Using our platform in which we couple a rapidly expanding plasma induced by high-power lasers (JLF/Titan at LLNL and LULI2000) with high-strength magnetic fields, we have investigated the generation of a magnetized collisionless shock and the associated particle energization. We have characterized the shock as being collisionless and supercritical. We report here on measurements of the plasma density and temperature, the electromagnetic field structures, and the particle energization in the experiments, under various conditions of ambient plasma and magnetic field. We have also modeled the formation of the shocks using macroscopic hydrodynamic simulations and the associated particle acceleration using kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. As a companion paper to Yao et al. [Nat. Phys. 17, 1177–1182 (2021)], here we show additional results of the experiments and simulations, providing more information to allow their reproduction and to demonstrate the robustness of our interpretation of the proton energization mechanism as being shock surfing acceleration.

Abstract

International audience; The resolution of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is particularly crucial for gas sensor applications where low concentrations are detected. This resolution can be improved by increasing the effective surface of QCM electrodes and, thereby, enhancing their sensitivity. For this purpose, various researchers have investigated the use of micro-structured materials with promising results. Herein, we propose the use of easy-to-manufacture metal blacks that are highly structured even on a nanoscale level and thus provide more bonding sites for gas analytes. Two different black metals with thicknesses of 280 nm, black aluminum (B-Al) and black gold (B-Au), were deposited onto the sensor surface to improve the sensitivity following the Sauerbrey equation. Both layers present a high surface roughness due to their cauliflower morphology structure. A high response (i.e., resonant frequency shift) of these QCM sensors coated with a black metal layer was obtained. Two gaseous analytes, H2O vapor and EtOH vapor, at different concentrations, are tested, and a distinct improvement of sensitivity is observed for the QCM sensors coated with a black metal layer compared to the blank ones, without strong side effects on resonance frequency stability or mechanical quality factor. An approximately 10 times higher sensitivity to EtOH gas is reported for the QCM coated with a black gold layer compared to the blank QCM sensor.

Abstract

International audience; Dynamics of the response of the type II superconductors to the time-varying magnetic field may be dependent on the rate of change of the field or hysteretic. The rate of energy dissipation in a superconductor placed in a time- varying magnetic field depends on the wave form of the field and the vortex dynamics, which depends on the temperature. The same waveform can decrease the energy dissipation rate in the critical state, while increasing the energy dissipation rate in a flux creep state or normal state. In the case of hysteretic non- linearity, the energy stored and dissipated in the applied field varies with the relative phase of the sinusoidal field components, although the magnitude of these components, and hence the effective field value, are constant. The data obtained by numerical modeling of the energy stored and dissipated over the fundamental field cycle show dependence on the wave- form of the AC field, which was synthesized using the fundamental and higher harmonic field components. These simulations were experimentally confirmed by measuring coated 2G HTS wire made by SuperPower Inc. using a continuous reading SQUID magnetometer. The results obtained show that it is possible to increase the RMS current in the superconductor while reducing the energy dissipated per field cycle. Abstract

International audience; The time profile of the lasing signal at 391.4 nm emitted by a weakly ionized gas of nitrogen molecules at low pressure is measured under double excitation with intense femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm. An abrupt decrease of the emission occurs at the time of arrival of the second pulse. It is explained by a transfer of population from ground to first excited ionic level and by a disruption of coherence, terminating the conditions for lasing in a V-scheme without population inversion.

Abstract

International audience; Optimization of the laser shock peening (LSP) and LASer Adhesion Test (LASAT) processes requires control of the laser-induced target's loading. Improvements to optical and laser technologies allow plasma characterization to be performed with greater precision than 20 years ago. Consequently, the processes involved during laser-matter interactions can be better understood. For the purposes of this paper, a self-consistent model of plasma pressure versus time is required. The current approach is called the inverse method, since it is adjusted until the simulated free surface velocity (FSV) corresponds to the experimental velocity. Thus, it is not possible to predict the behavior of the target under shock without having done the experiments. For the first time, experimental data collected in different labs with the most up-to-date laser parameters are used to validate a self-consistent model for temporal pressure-profile calculation. In addition, the parameters characterizing the plasma (temperature, thickness and duration) are obtained from the ESTHER numerical code, together with the amount of ablated matter. Finally, analytic fits are presented that can reproduce any pressure-temporal profiles in the following domains of validity: Intensities, I, ranging from 10 to 500 GW cm-2 and pulse durations, T pul, between 5 and 40 ns for the direct-illumination regime at 1053 nm, I ranging from 1 to 6 GW cm-2 and T pul between 10 to 40 ns in the water-confined regime at 1053 nm, and I from 1 to 10 GW cm-2 and T pul between 7 and 20 ns in the water-confined regime at 532 nm. These temporal pressure profiles can then be used to predict the aluminum target's behavior under laser shock using mechanical simulation software.

Abstract

International audience; We report on the crystal structure and physical properties of Tl0.6Mo3S5, which belongs to a novel family of materials with large tunnels, reminiscent of those observed in the romanechite structure type. Tl cations are partially filling these tunnels delimited by the Mo-S cluster framework in which the Mo atoms form infinite zigzag chains. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data indicate that this compound crystallizes in the monoclinic, non-centrosymmetric space group P21 (no. 4; a = 9.344(2) angstrom, b = 3.234(2) A, c = 11.669(2) A and beta = 113.09(2)° at 293 K). While electron diffraction performed on single crystals further evidences a commensurate modulation running solely along the b axis with a modulation wave vector further experiments carried out on a polycrystalline sample suggest a compositional dependence of q on the Tl content. Low-temperature transport properties measurements (5-300 K) reveal that Tl0.6Mo3S5 behaves as a narrow-band-gap n-type semiconductor. The strongly non-linear temperature dependence of the thermopower further suggests the presence of several electronic bands contributing to the electrical transport. Consistent with the extended electronic distribution in the tunnels that requires a description using two adjacent Tl sites, specific heat data measured down to 0.35 K evidence the presence of a Schottky-type anomaly that may be associated with the tunneling of the Tl cations between several equivalent, off-centered equilibrium sites. This inherent disorder contributes to suppression of the low-temperature Umklapp peak in the lattice thermal conductivity kL, the temperature dependence of which mimics that observed in strongly-disordered compounds. In spite of this characteristic, high kL values of up to 3.8 W m-1K-1 are reached at 300 K, due to the covalent Mo-S network that contributes to maintaining high sound velocities.

Abstract

International audience; Targeted therapies of melanoma are of urgent need considering the resistance of this aggressive type of cancer to chemotherapeutics. The voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1)–hexokinase-II (HK-II) complex is an emerging target for novel anticancer therapies based on induced mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. The low cell membrane permeability of the anticancer 12-mer peptide N-Ter (RDVFTKGYGFGL) derived from the N-terminal fragment of the VDAC1 protein impedes the intracellular targeting. Here, novel multiblock VDAC1-derived cationic amphiphilic peptides (referred to as Pal-N-Ter-TAT, pFL-N-Ter-TAT, and Pal-pFL-N-Ter-TAT) are designed with a self-assembly propensity and cell-penetrating properties. The created multiblock amphiphilic peptides of partial α-helical conformations form nanoparticles of ellipsoid-like shapes and are characterized by enhanced cellular uptake. The amphiphilic peptides can target mitochondria and dissociate the VDAC1–HK-II complex at the outer mitochondrial membrane, which result in mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. The latter is associated with decrease of the mitochondrial membrane potential, cytochrome c release, and changes of the expression levels of the apoptotic proteins in A375 melanoma cells. Importantly, the mitochondrial VDAC1-derived amphiphilic peptides have a comparable IC50 value for melanoma cells to a small-molecule drug, sorafenib, which has been previously used in clinical trials for melanoma. These results demonstrate the potential of the designed peptide constructs for efficient melanoma inhibition.

Abstract

International audience; Development of plastic scintillators loaded with low-cost phosphorescent sensitizer is currently an important topic toward enhancing the scintillation light yield for radiation detection applications. In this work, we report plastic scintillators loaded with deep-blue-emitting phosphorescent sensitizer CuI(PPh$_3$)$_2$(t-BuPy), where PPh$_3$ and $t$-BuPy stand for triphenylphosphine and 4-$tert$-butylpyridine, respectively. CuI(PPh$_3$)$_2$($t$-BuPy)-loaded poly(vinyltoluene) plastic scintillators with a high optical transmittance of over 80% were synthesized via bulk polymerization method. The optical absorption, photoluminescence spectra and decay kinetics, and scintillation performance under X-ray, $\gamma$-ray, and $\alpha$-particle excitation were comprehensively investigated. The scintillation yield was reduced with the increase of CuI(PPh$_3$)$_2$($t$-BuPy) loading concentration. The physical mechanism and the role of the copper iodide complex in scintillation yield reduction are proposed.

Among others, cold plasma-based sputtering metals onto a liquid substrate appears to be a very promising technique for the synthesis of high-purity NPs. The process enables the production of very small NPs without using any toxic reagents and complex chemical synthesis routes, and enables the synthesis of alloy NPs which can be the first step towards the formation of porous NPs. In this paper, the synthesis of gold-copper alloy NPs has been performed by co-sputtering gold and copper targets over pentaerythritol ethoxylate. The resulting solutions contain a mixture of gold, copper oxide, and alloy NPs having a radius of few angstroms. The annealing of these NPs, inside the solution, has been performed in order to increase their size and further induce the dealloying of the Au-Cu NPs. The resulting NPs exhibit either a nanoporous structure or are self-organized in an agglomerate of small NPs.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the optical properties of Sm3+ doped K2Bi(PO4)(MoO4) phosphors as possible candidates for application in light emitting diodes (LEDs) for horticultural and general lighting applications. Sm3+ doped phosphors with 0.5%, 1%, 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% Sm3+ have been prepared by solid state reaction method. The synthesized materials were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The room temperature (RT) reflection, excitation, and emission spectra, photoluminescence (PL) decay curves, as well as temperature dependent emission and excitation spectra and PL decay curves were measured and discussed. Moreover, quantum efficiencies, and lumen equivalents (LE) were determined and discussed. The prepared K2Bi(PO4)(MoO4):Sm3+ phosphor samples show moderate quantum efficiency, high colour purity, and a high quenching temperature. These properties are required for phosphors if they are under consideration for application in LEDs and other areas. It was also shown, that the PL emission of the phosphor well matches the absorption of the main plant pigments thus making it a good candidate for horticultural lighting applications. Using this phosphor and a near-UV LED a phosphor-converted LED (pcLED) prototype, meeting the photophysiological needs of plants, was designed. Supplementing the prototype with a green or lime LED the colour rendering index and luminous efficacy of radiation of the prototype is greatly increased thus making it more efficient and pleasant for people present at the greenhouse.

Abstract

International audience; Yttrium orthoaluminate (YAlO3) is an attractive laser host crystal for doping with thulium (Tm3+) ions. We report on the absorption and stimulated-emission (SE) cross-sections of this orthorhombic (sp. gr. Pnma) Tm:YAlO3 crystal for the principal light polarizations, E || a, b and c. Polarized absorption data lead to the Judd-Ofelt parameters Ω2 = 1.46, Ω4 = 2.82 and Ω6 = 1.09 [10-20 cm2]. In particular, for the 3H4 → 3H5 transition, it is found a stimulated emission cross section of 0.86×10-20 cm2 at 2278 nm corresponding to an emission bandwidth of ~12 nm (for E || b). Continuous-wave laser operation on this 3H4 → 3H5 transition is achieved with an 1.8 at.% Tm:YAlO3 crystal under laser-pumping at 776 nm. The mid-infrared Tm:YAlO3 laser generated 0.96 W at ~2274 nm with a slope efficiency of 61.8% and a linear laser polarization (E || b). Tm:YAlO3 is promising for mode-locked lasers at ~2.3 μm.

Abstract

We observe a new regime of coherent XUV radiation generation in noble gases induced by femtosecond pulses at very high intensities. This XUV emission has both a reduced divergence and spectral width as compared to high-order harmonic generation (HHG). It is not emitted at a moderate intensity of the driving pulses where only high-order harmonics are generated. At high driving intensities, the additional XUV comb appears near all harmonic orders and even exceeds the HHG signal on the axis. The peaks are observed in several gases and their frequencies do not depend on the driving intensity or gas pressure. We analyze the divergence, spectral width and spectral shift of this XUV emission. We show that these specific features are well explained by high-order parametric generation (HPG) involving multiphoton absorption and combined emission of an idler THz radiation and an XUV beam with remarkably smooth spatial and spectral characteristics., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. Abstract

This short paper describes the preparation of thin layers based on carbohelicenes, which are inherently chiral polyaromatics existing in the enantiomeric forms P and M. Specifically, [5]-, [6]- and [7]helicene were subjected to redox cycling between −1.5 and 1.5 V vs. ferrocene/ferrocenium at a scan rate of 10 V/s. This way, enantiopure layers exhibiting redox activity were formed on the surfaces of the glassy carbon and ITO electrodes under anoxic and non-aqueous conditions. The properties of the prepared polymer layers were investigated using electrochemistry with Fe/Ru redox probes, circular dischroism, AFM, impedance measurement and Raman spectroscopy. With [6]helicene, the suggested electropolymerization procedure thus represents a proof-of-concept for the preparation of chiral carbonaceous surfaces. Abstract

International audience; Radiative shocks (RS) are complex phenomena which are ubiquitous in astrophysical environments. The study of such hypersonic shocks in the laboratory, under controlled conditions, is of primary interest to understand the physics at play and also to check the ability of numerical simulations to reproduce the experimental results.In this context, we conducted, at the Prague Asterix Laser System facility (PALS), the first experiments dedicated to the study of two counter-propagating radiative shocks propagating at non-equal speeds up to 25–50 km/s in noble gases at pressures ranging between 0.1 and 0.6 bar. These experiments highlighted the interaction between the two radiative precursors. This interaction is qualitatively but not quantitatively described by 1D simulations. Preliminary results obtained with XUV spectroscopy leading to the estimation of shock temperature and ion charge of the plasma are also presented.

Abstract

International audience; A highly stable, cobalt rich, template free Co–AlPO material (Co1.16Al2P4O20H11.68) was prepared by opening the structure of cobalt methylphosphonate (CoMeP) layered material under hydrothermal (HT) treatment in the presence of aluminium. CoMeP serves as the structure directing unit favoring the preferential formation of Al–O–P bonds, thus connecting the neighboring layers, which results in alternating Co–P and Al stacks. The new Co–AlPO material is monoclinic (S.G.: P21/n), and it is built of 12 membered ellipsoidal channels running along the crystallographic c-axis containing confined water molecules and another 6 membered hexagonal channels along the a-axis, where Co2+ cations are occasionally found. The formation of Al–O–P bonds was proved by FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract

Lysosome-activated apoptosis represents an alternative method of overcoming tumor resistance compared to traditional forms of treatment. Pulsed magnetic fields open a new avenue for controlled and targeted initiation of lysosomal permeabilization in cancer cells via mechanical actuation of magnetic nanomaterials. In this study we used a noninvasive tool, namely, a benchtop pulsed magnetic system, which enabled remote activation of apoptosis in liver cancer cells. The magnetic system we designed represents a platform that can be used in a wide range of biomedical applications. We show that liver cancer cells can be loaded with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). SPIONs retained in lysosomal compartments can be effectively actuated with a high intensity (up to 8 T), short pulse width (~15 &micro, s), pulsed magnetic field (PMF), resulting in lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP) in cancer cells. We revealed that SPION-loaded lysosomes undergo LMP by assessing an increase in the cytosolic activity of the lysosomal cathepsin B. The extent of cell death induced by LMP correlated with the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in cells. LMP was achieved for estimated forces of 700 pN and higher. Furthermore, we validated our approach on a three-dimensional cellular culture model to be able to mimic in vivo conditions. Overall, our results show that PMF treatment of SPION-loaded lysosomes can be utilized as a noninvasive tool to remotely induce apoptosis.

Abstract

International audience; The integration of diamond layers brings biocompatibility and enhanced stability of biomolecules to Love wave devices for promising biosensor applications. Love-Wave Surface Acoustic Wave (LW-SAW) devices consisting of an ST-cut quartz substrate with a silicon oxide layer coated by a thin diamond layer have been fabricated. The effect of nucleation and growth of diamond on the properties of LW-SAW devices was studied. The Love-wave phase velocity was shown to be affected by the diamond coating and dependent on its thickness. Experimental results are in a good agreement with simulations carried out with COMSOL Multiphysics software. Deposition of isolated diamond grains results in a reduction in velocity in the Love waves, which is attributed to a mass loading effect. Conversely, coalesced diamond layers increase the stiffness of the surface, which results in faster propagation of the Love waves. Improved entrapment of the Love waves in the guiding layer was observed in the case of isolated diamond grains, which should ensure higher sensitivity for this type of coating. Diamond coated LW-SAW devices can be used for biosensing applications with appropriated functionalization of the diamond surface.

Abstract

Magnetic and structural parameters of tetragonal Fe5SiB2 compound was studied in applied magnetic field up to 7 T and hydrostatic pressure up to 6 GPa in temperature ranging from 2 K up to TC = 844 K. The temperature dependence of saturated magnetization was measured and described by analytical equation. The decrease of saturated magnetization of dlnM/dp = −1.5 10−2 GPa−1 was observed. The bulk modulus of 124 GPa was determined by means of high pressure X-ray diffraction. Low temperature spin-reorientation transition was observed and small negative dependence of the transition temperature with respect to pressure was established.

Abstract

Crystallography of nanocrystalline materials has witnessed a true revolution in the past 10 years, thanks to the introduction of protocols for 3D acquisition and analysis of electron diffraction data. This method provides single-crystal data of structure solution and refinement quality, allowing the atomic structure determination of those materials that remained hitherto unknown because of their limited crystallinity. Several experimental protocols exist, which share the common idea of sampling a sequence of diffraction patterns while the crystal is tilted around a noncrystallographic axis, namely, the goniometer axis of the transmission electron microscope sample stage. This Outlook reviews most important 3D electron diffraction applications for different kinds of samples and problematics, related with both materials and life sciences. Structure refinement including dynamical scattering is also briefly discussed., 3D electron diffraction allows the atomic structure determination of inorganic, organic, and macromolecular materials that remained hitherto unknown because of their limited crystal size.

Abstract

The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Object, a class of objects that have never been heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. Here we describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bi-lobed contact binary with a flattened shape, discrete geological units, and noticeable albedo heterogeneity. However, there is little surface color and compositional heterogeneity. No evidence for satellites, ring or dust structures, gas coma, or solar wind interactions was detected. By origin MU69 appears consistent with pebble cloud collapse followed by a low velocity merger of its two lobes., 43 pages, 8 figure

Abstract

The interaction of Love waves with square array of pillars deposited on a cavity defined in a 2D holey phononic crystal is numerically investigated using Finite Element Method. First, the existence of SH surface modes is demonstrated separately for phononic crystals that consist of square arrayed holes, or rectangular arrayed Ni pillars, respectively in, or on, a SiO2 film deposited on a ST-cut quartz substrate. The coupling between SH modes and torsional mode in pillars induces a transmission dip that occurs at a frequency located in the range of the band-gap of the holey phononic crystal. Second, a cavity is constructed by removing lines of holes in the holey phononic crystal and results in a transmission peak that matches the dip. The optimal geometrical parameters enable us to create a coupling of the cavity mode and the localized pillar mode by introducing lines of pillars into the cavity, which significantly improved the efficiency of the cavity without increasing the crystal size. The obtained results will pave the way to implement advanced designs of high-performance electroacoustic sensors based on coupling modes in phononic crystals., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

As a metastable phase, vaterite is involved in the first step of crystallization of several carbonate-forming systems including the two stable polymorphs calcite and aragonite. Its complete structural determination would consequently shed important light to understand scaling formation and biomineralization processes. While vaterite’s hexagonal substructure (a0 ~ 4.1 Å and c0 ~ 8.5 Å) and the organization of the carbonate groups within a single layer is known, conflicting interpretations regarding the stacking sequence remain and preclude the complete understanding of the structure. To resolve the ambiguities, we performed precession electron diffraction tomography (PEDT) to collect single crystal data from 100 K to the ambient temperature. The structure was solved ab initio and described over all the temperature range using a unified modulated structure model in the superspace group C12/c1(α0γ)00 with a = a0 = 4.086(3) Å, b = $$\sqrt{{\bf{3}}}$$ 3 a0 = 7.089(9) Å, c = c0 = 8.439(9) Å, α = β = γ = 90° and q = $$\tfrac{{\bf{2}}}{{\bf{3}}}$$ 2 3 a* + γc*. At 100 K the model presents a pure 4-layer stacking sequence with γ = $$\tfrac{{\bf{1}}}{{\bf{2}}}$$ 1 2 whereas at the ambient temperature, ordered stacking faults are introduced leading to γ $$\tfrac{{\bf{1}}}{{\bf{2}}}$$ 1 2 . The model was refined against PEDT data using the dynamical refinement procedure including modulation and twinning as well as against x-ray powder data by the Rietveld refinement.

Abstract

International audience; Eu doped ZnO thin films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition on fused silica substrate at room temperature and 300 °C in an oxygen ambient of pressure of 10 Pa. The films exhibited a wurtzite structure. The average transmittance exceeded 80% in the visible region confirming a good optical quality of the films. The characteristic emission of both Eu2+ and Eu3+ was observed when indirectly excited. The increase of substrate temperature to 300 °C led to higher crystallites size, lower efficiency of energy transfer from ZnO to Eu ions and lower resistivity of the film. XPS revealed the ratio of Eu divalent and trivalent states as 35%:65% and 27%:73% for sample deposited at room temperature and 300 °C, respectively. AFM showed higher RMS for the sample prepared at 300 °C.

Abstract

Suprathermal electrons are routinely generated in high-intensity laser produced plasmas via instabilities driven by non-linear laser-plasma interaction. Their accurate characterization is crucial for the performance of inertial confinement fusion as well as for performing experiments in laboratory astrophysics and in general high-energy-density physics. Here, we present studies of non-thermal atomic states excited by suprathermal electrons in kJ-ns-laser produced plasmas. Highly spatially and spectrally resolved X-ray emission from the laser-deflected part of the warm dense Cu foil visualized the hot electrons. A multi-scale two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation including non-linear laser-plasma interactions and hot electron propagation has provided an input for ab initio non-thermal atomic simulations. The analysis revealed a significant delay between the maximum of laser pulse and presence of suprathermal electrons. Agreement between spectroscopic signatures and simulations demonstrates that combination of advanced high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy and non-thermal atomic physics offers a promising method to characterize suprathermal electrons inside the solid density matter., Suprathermal electrons in laser-generated plasmas are potentially useful in many plasma environments. Here the authors show the characterization of suprathermal electrons in laser-generated Cu plasma using a high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy combined with hydrodynamic and atomic modeling.

Abstract

International audience; Mitochondria-targeting peptides represent an emergent approach for cancer inhibition. Here supramolecular assemblies of novel amphiphilic cell-penetrating peptides for targeting cancer cells mitochondria are reported. The employed strategy aims at amplifying the apoptotic stimuli by weakening the mitochondrial VDAC1 (voltage-dependent anion channel-1)-hexokinase-II (HK-II) interaction. Peptide engineering is performed with the N-terminus of the HK-II protein, which binds to VDAC1. First, a designed positively-charged segment (pKV) is anchored to the specific 15 aminoacid sequence (MIASHLLAYFFTELN) to yield a cell-penetrating peptide (pHK-pKV). Second, a lipid chain (Pal) is conjugated to the N-terminus of pHK-pKV in order to enhance the intracellular delivery of the HK-II scaffold. The self-assembly properties of these two synthetic peptides are investigated by synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (BioSAXS) and cryogenic transmission electron (cryo-TEM) imaging, which evidence the formation of nanoassemblies of ellipsoid-like shapes. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy demonstrates the induction of partial α-helical structures in the amphiphilic peptides. Confocal microscopy reveals the specific mitochondrial location of Pal-pHK-pKV assemblies in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cells. The cytotoxicity and apoptotic studies indicate the enhanced bioactivity of Pal-pHK-pKV self-assembled reservoirs, which cause massive A549 cell death with regard to pHK-pKV. Whereas the half maximum inhibitory concentration (IC 50) of the Pal-pHK-pKV peptide conjugates is 6.5 μM in the A549 cancer cell line, it is higher than 50 μM for healthy human mucosal epithelial cells such as the non-cancerous NCM460 cells. The results demonstrate the potential of self-assembled lipo-peptide (HK-II-derived) conjugates as a promising strategy in cancer therapy. .

Abstract

International audience; A significant enhancement in the light attenuation length in 22 cm long YAG:Ce and YAG:Ce,Mg fibers grown by the micro-pulling-down method has been reported. This progress has been achieved by the introduction of Al excess into the melt, optimization of thermal conditions of crystallization and post growth annealing. Attenuation length clearly correlates with surface roughness of the fibers. Al excess addition over the stoichiometric composition enhances the fiber surface smoothness. An increase in axial thermal gradient and melt pressure in the crucible capillary die improves the crystallization process stability. Mg codoping provides a Ce3+ scintillation decay time decrease down to 80 ns.

Abstract

New ferroelectric layered materials were found in the pseudobinary system Bi5Nb3O15-ABi2Nb2O9 (A= Ba, Sr and Pb). Preliminary observations made by transmission electron microscopy indicate that these compounds exhibit a complex incommensurately modulated structure. A (3 + 1)D structural model is obtained using ab initio phasing by charge flipping based on the analysis of precession electron diffraction tomography data. The (3 + 1)D structure is further validated by a refinement against neutron powder diffraction. These materials possess a layered structure with discontinuous [Bi2O2] slabs and perovskite blocks. While these structural units are characteristics of Aurivillius phases, the existence of periodic crystallographic shear planes offers strong similarities with collapsed or stairlike structures known in high-Tc superconductors and related compounds. Using dielectric spectroscopy, we study the phase transitions of these new layered materials. For A = Ba and Sr, a Vögel-Fulcher-like behavior characteristic of the so-called relaxor ferroelectrics is observed and compared to "canonical" relaxors. For A = Sr, the absence of a Burns temperature separated from the freezing temperature appears as a rather unusual behavior.

Abstract

International audience; Lattice disorder, electronic Raman scattering, and Fano interaction effects are at the genesis of the Raman spectrum of heavily boron-doped diamond. However, no accurate unified description of this spectrum has been reported yet. In this work, we propose a novel analysis of the Raman spectrum of boron-doped diamond based on classical models of electronic Raman scattering and Fano effect. This new analysis shows that the Raman spectrum of boron-doped diamond results from the combination of electronic Raman scattering and its interaction, i.e. Fano effect, with the diamond phonon density of states and it confirms the 500 cm −1 and 1200 cm −1 bands originate from the phonon density of states.

Abstract

International audience; Formation of ohmic contacts on boron-doped diamond using zirconium and niobium has been studied in comparison to the commonly used titanium or tantalum contacts. Metal contacts were fabricated using standard micro-fabrication technologies on epitaxial layers with different boron concentrations. Room temperature specific contact resistance was determined using the circular Transmission Line Model after annealing at various temperatures. The specific contact resistance varies considerably with boron concentration and annealing temperature. Zirconium and niobium form ohmic contacts on highly boron-doped diamond after high-temperature annealing with a specific contact resistance comparable to that of titanium and tantalum contacts. Furthermore, we observed zirconium contacts showed better thermal stability upon high-temperature annealing compared to titanium and other metal contacts. These results emphasize the potential of zirconium for the formation of ohmic contacts on boron-doped diamond.

Abstract

This Ph.D. dissertation thesis addresses the conditions and mechanisms that lead superelastic NiTi wires to fail under cyclic mechanical loads. NiTi shape memory alloys exhibit functional thermomechanical properties (superelasticity, shape memory effect, thermal actuation) due to martensitic phase transformations caused by a change of the applied stress and temperature. These phase transformations are though as fully reversible damage-free processes, however, when NiTi is subjected to repetitive stress-induced phase transformations its fatigue performance drops drastically in comparison to non-transforming NiTi. Most of fatigue S-N curves reporting this drop were measured on straight NiTi wires in which martensitic transformations proceed heterogeneously through nucleation and propagation of shear bands. Moreover, from our experience fatigue testing straight wire samples results in undesired failure inside the testing machine clamps. Hence, the reported stress-strain values in S-N curves are not necessarily representative of the critical mechanical conditions that lead the material to failure. With the aim of better characterize the fatigue performance of NiTi wires, we started by carrying out a series of pull-pull fatigue tests using hourglass-shaped samples. This sample geometry allowed us to confine all martensitic transformation and related material fatigue processes into a well-defined gauge volume. The samples’ characterization was performed by combining several experimental and analysis techniques such as Digital Image Correlation, Infrared Thermography, Synchrotron-source X-ray diffraction, Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Finite Element Analysis. A special attention was paid to the High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) performance of NiTi in which the material shows elastic behavior and/or an intermediate phase transformation (so-called R-phase). The results from HCF tests allowed us to distinguish crack nucleation and crack propagation stages during the total life of our NiTi samples. In order to get a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to crack nucleation, we applied the nonconventional Self-Heating fatigue assessment method, which has shown efficiency in the case of aluminum and steel alloys. This method correlates the temperature elevation of a sample subjected to different cyclic load amplitudes with energy dissipating mechanisms that contribute to accumulating local damage in the material. The Self-Heating method was performed using full-field thermal measurements of cyclically loaded NiTi hourglass-shaped samples., Ce travail de thèse aborde les conditions et les mécanismes qui conduisent des fils superélastiques de NiTi à la rupture sous chargement mécanique cyclique. Les alliages à mémoire de forme du type NiTi présentent des propriétés thermomécaniques fonctionnelles comme la superélasticité et l’effet de mémoire de forme simple et double, lesquels sont générées grâce aux transformations de phase martensitiques provoquées soit par un changement de la contrainte ou de la température. Ces transformations de phase sont en principe des processus totalement réversibles et sans endommagement. Cependant, lorsque le NiTi est soumis à des transformations de phase induites par des contraintes cycliques, la performance en fatigue de l’alliage chute considérablement par rapport au NiTi non-transformant. La plupart des courbes S-N de fatigue rapportant cette chute ont été mesurées sur des fils NiTi a section constante dans lesquels les transformations martensitiques se développent de façon hétérogene par nucléation et propagation de bandes de cisaillement. De plus, d'après notre expérience, des essais de fatigue sur des échantillons de fils à section constante entrainent la rupture à l'intérieur des mors de la machine d'essai. Par conséquent, les valeurs de contrainte-déformation rapportées dans les courbes S-N ne sont pas nécessairement représentatives des conditions mécaniques critiques qui conduisent le matériau à la rupture. Dans le but de mieux caractériser les performances en fatigue des fils NiTi, nous avons effectué une série de tests de fatigue en traction-traction, tout en utilisant des échantillons sous forme ≪ diabolo ≫. La géométrie de ces échantillons nous a permis de confiner tous les processus de transformation martensitique et de fatigue dans un volume utile bien défini. La caractérisation du comportement thermomécanique de ces échantillons a été réalisée en combinant plusieurs techniques expérimentales et d'analyse telles que la corrélation d'image numérique(DIC), la thermographie infrarouge, la diffraction des rayons X à source synchrotron, la microscopie optique, la microscopie électronique à balayage et l'analyse par éléments finis. Une attention particulière à été portée à la performance de NiTi dans le régime à grand nombre de cycles (HCF) dans laquelle le matériau présente un comportement élastique ou une transformation de phase intermédiaire (appelée R-phase). Les résultats des tests de fatigue nous ont permis de distinguer les étapes de nucléation et de propagation des fissures pendant la durée de vie totale de nos échantillons. Afin de mieux comprendre les mécanismes qui conduisent à la nucléation des fissures, nous avons appliqué la méthode de l’auto-échauffement, qui a démontré son efficacité dans la prédiction de fatigue dans les cas des alliages d'aluminium et des alliages d'acier. Cette méthode corrèle l'élévation de température d'un échantillon soumis à différentes amplitudes de charge cyclique avec des mécanismes de dissipation d'énergie. Ces mécanismes dissipatifs sont après associés à l’accumulation d’endommagement locale dans le matériau. La méthode d'autoéchauffement a été réalisée en utilisant des mesures de champs thermiques des d'échantillons de NiTi sous forme diabolo pendant de chargement cyclique.

Abstract

International audience; With a high affinity to carbon comparable to titanium and an electrically conductive carbide, zirconium has potential to form ohmic contact on boron doped diamond. In this work, formation of ohmic contacts on boron doped diamond using zirconium is studied in comparison to titanium. Boron doped diamond epitaxial layers have been grown by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition with various B/C ratio. Circular Transmission Line Model structures were fabricated using standard micro-fabrication technologies. Specific contact resistance of fabricated contacts was determined for different boron concentrations and for various annealing temperatures. Ohmic contacts using zirconium are formed after annealing at 400 °C. Specific contact resistance steadily decreases with high temperature annealing down to a value of ca. 1 mΩ.cm 2 after annealing at 700 °C for highly boron doped diamond. In comparison, titanium contact fabricated on highly doped diamond appears not stable under high temperature annealing.

Abstract

International audience; The structural dynamics of charge-transfer states of nitrogen-ligated copper complexes has been extensively investigated in recent years following the development of pump-probe X-ray techniques. In this study we extend this approach towards copper complexes with sulfur coordination and investigate the influence of charge transfer states on the structure of a dicopper(I) complex with coordination by bridging disulfide ligands and additionally tetramethylguanidine units [CuI2(NSSN)(2)](2+). In order to directly observe and refine the photoinduced structural changes in the solvated complex we applied picosecond pump-probe X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Additionally, the ultrafast evolution of the electronic excited states was monitored by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in the UV-Vis probe range. DFT calculations were used to predict molecular geometries and electronic structures of the ground and metal-to-ligand charge transfer states with singlet and triplet spin multiplicities, i.e. S-0, (MLCT)-M-1 and (MLCT)-M-3, respectively. Combining these techniques we elucidate the electronic and structural dynamics of the solvated complex upon photoexcitation to the MLCT states. In particular, femtosecond optical transient spectroscopy reveals three distinct timescales of 650 fs, 10 ps and 4100 ps, which were assigned as internal conversion to the ground state (Sn -> S-0), intersystem crossing (MLCT)-M-1 -> (MLCT)-M-3, and subsequent relaxation of the triplet to the ground state, respectively. Experimental data collected using both X-ray techniques are in agreement with the DFT-predicted structure for the triplet state, where coordination bond lengths change and one of the S-S bridges is cleaved, causing the movement of two halves of the molecule relative to each other. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy resolves changes in Cu-ligand bond lengths with precision on the order of 0.01 angstrom, whereas WAXS is sensitive to changes in the global shape related to relative movement of parts of the molecule. The results presented herein widen the knowledge on the electronic and structural dynamics of photoexcited copper-sulfur complexes and demonstrate the potential of combining the pump-probe X-ray absorption and scattering for studies on photoinduced structural dynamics in copper-based coordination complexes.

Abstract

Radial junction solar cells with only ~100 nm thin amorphous Si absorber layer deposited on Si nanowires can be prepared by a relatively simple and low-cost thin film technology. Metal assisted Si nanowire growth leads to a disorder in nanowire orientations, lengths and shapes, which is then preserved by the conformal absorber layer. Interestingly, high conversion efficiencies are reached in spite of the disorder. In this contribution we describe microscopic methods aiming at exploring the role of structural disorder on the local electronic properties of radial junction cells. A method for locating the same nanostructure in different microscopes, using the nanoindentation marks for orientation on the sample, is described. Indents can be easily located by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopes or scanning probe microscopes. Groups of three indents arranged in triangles can serve as coordinate systems for triangulation on samples, enabling correlative microscopy even in instruments which were not designed for it. This approach also enables localization of the same positions on samples after repeated mounting in various microscopes with a precision better than 50 nm. This is possible even on samples without any structural features, as demonstrated for flat silicon thin films prepared by solid phase crystallization, for which we have correlated crystallographic maps from electron backscattering diffraction and conductivity maps by atomic force microscopy. The technique allows observing the same locations before and after technological steps, as shown for the hot wire chemical vapor deposition of carbon nanowalls.
