The Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) of the InSight mission to Mars has been providing direct information on Martian interior structure and dynamics of that planet since it landed. Compared with seismic recordings on the Earth, ground‐motion measurements acquired by SEIS on Mars are not only made under dramatically different ambient noise conditions, but also include idiosyncratic signals that arise from coupling between different InSight sensors and spacecraft components. This work is to synthesize what is known about these signal types, illustrate how they can manifest in waveforms and noise correlations, and present pitfalls in structural interpretations based on standard seismic analysis methods. We show that glitches (a type of prominent transient signal) can produce artifacts in ambient noise correlations. Sustained signals that vary in frequency, such as lander modes that are affected by variations in temperature and wind conditions over the course of the Martian sol, can also contaminate ambient noise results. Therefore, both types of signals have the potential to bias interpretation in terms of subsurface layering. We illustrate that signal processing in the presence of identified nonseismic signals must be informed by an understanding of the underlying physical processes in order for high‐fidelity waveforms of ground motion to be extracted. Whereas the origins of the most idiosyncratic signals are well understood, the 2.4 Hz resonance remains debated, and the literature does not contain an explanation of its fine spectral structure. The chronology of the Late Bronze Age and the earliest stages of the Iron Age in the Mediterranean is an important topic of debate since the study of both local social dynamics and trade and colonial activity around the Mediterranean requires obviously well-established chronological frameworks. However, the exact chronology of the Early Iron Age in the Mediterranean region is still a problematic issue today since different, and in some cases unbalanced, sources of information (historical texts, material culture sequences, and radiocarbon dating results) are used. The NE Iberian Peninsula is not an exception and different time periods are proposed in the literature for the Early Iron Age. Here, and in order to provide a new and an independent input to feed this debate, we apply the archeomagnetic dating method to four archeological hearths from the Sant Jaume Complex, a set of several Early Iron Age archeological sites located in the north-eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. The archeomagnetic dating results suggest that the abandonment of the studied structures (that can be linked to the abandonment of the archeological sites) most probably occurred before 650 BC, and therefore invalidate the age commonly ascribed to the Early Iron Age sites in this area. PRISM3D results from the combination of the most up-to-date earth models available for the region. It extends horizontally from 15°W to 5°E in longitude, 34°N to 46°N in latitude and vertically from 3.5 km above to 200 km below sea level, and is modelled on a regular grid with 10 and 0.5 km of grid node spacing in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. It was designed using models inferred from local and teleseismic body-wave tomography, earthquake and ambient noise surface wave tomography, receiver function analysis and active source experiments. It includes two interfaces, namely the topography/bathymetry and the Mohorovičić (Moho) discontinuity. The Moho was modelled from previously published receiver function analysis and deep seismic sounding results. To that end we used a probabilistic surface reconstruction algorithm that allowed to extract the mean of the Moho depth surface along with its associated standard deviation, which provides a depth uncertainty estimate. The Moho depth model is in good agreement with previously published models, although it presents slightly sharper gardients in orogenic areas such as the Pyrenees or the Betic-Rif system. Crustal and mantle P- and S-wave wave speed grids were built separately on each side of the Moho depth surface by weighted average of existing models, thus allowing to realistically render the speed gradients across that interface. The associated weighted standard deviation was also calculated, which provides an uncertainty estimation on the average wave speed values at any point of the grid. The instrument package SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) with the three very broadband and three short‐period seismic sensors is installed on the surface on Mars as part of NASA's InSight Discovery mission. When compared to terrestrial installations, SEIS is deployed in a very harsh wind and temperature environment that leads to inevitable degradation of the quality of the recorded data. One ubiquitous artifact in the raw data is an abundance of transient one‐sided pulses often accompanied by high‐frequency spikes. These pulses, which we term “glitches”, can be modeled as the response of the instrument to a step in acceleration, while the spikes can be modeled as the response to a simultaneous step in displacement. We attribute the glitches primarily to SEIS‐internal stress relaxations caused by the large temperature variations to which the instrument is exposed during a Martian day. Only a small fraction of glitches correspond to a motion of the SEIS package as a whole caused by minuscule tilts of either the instrument or the ground. In this study, we focus on the analysis of the glitch+spike phenomenon and present how these signals can be automatically detected and removed from SEIS's raw data. As glitches affect many standard seismological analysis methods such as receiver functions, spectral decomposition and source inversions, we anticipate that studies of the Martian seismicity as well as studies of Mars' internal structure should benefit from deglitched seismic data., Plain Language Summary: The instrument package SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) with two fully equipped seismometers is installed on the surface of Mars as part of NASA's InSight Discovery mission. EGU2020: Sharing Geoscience Online, 4-8 may 2020, The Teide-Pico Viejo (PT-PV) stratovolcanoes constitute one of the major potentially active volcanic complexes in Europe. PT-PV was traditionally considered as non-explosive system however, recent studies (ie. García et al. 2014) have pointed out that the explosive character of phonolitic magmas, including plinian and subplinian eruptions and generation of pyroclastic density currents, have also been significant within the last 30 kyr volcanological record. This explosive activity is mostly associated to satellite dome vents, like the one studied in this work, Pico Cabras. Dome-forming eruptions usually present sudden transitions between explosive and effusive activity. A better knowledge of this type of eruptions and about the main mechanisms controlling the changes in eruptive dynamics is required to undertake a comprehensive volcanic hazard assessment of Tenerife Island. In this study, we conduct a petrological and mineral characterization of the different eruption phases of Pico Cabras (pumice and lava flow samples for the explosive and effusive activity, respectively) with the aim of determining the factors that control these changes in the volcanic activity. Products were characterized with Scanning Electrom Microscope, and mineral phases, glass and volatile species (F, Cl) were analysed with electron microprobe and micro-XRF. The pre-eruptive conditions of the magma (pressure, temperature and water dissolved in the magma) were determined first by using available geothermobarometers, geohygrometers (Masotta et al., 2013; Mollo et al., 2015) and compared to those retrieved by using available phase equilibria experiments from the literature (ie. Andújar and Scaillet, 2012). Our results suggest the presence of a compositionally stratified magma chamber at 1 kbar±0.5kbar prior to Pico Cabras eruption in which the differences in the eruptive styles are controlled by the temperature and the amount of volatiles dissolved in the melt. The explosive phase is related to the upper part of the magma chamber at 725ºC±25ºC and 3,5-5 wt% H2O and the effusive phase with the main body of the chamber at 880ºC±30ºC and 2,5-3 wt% H2O. Feldspar zonations show that overturn events occurred in the different layers of the magma chambers (¿self-mixing¿) and suggest that the eruption was triggered by underplating of mafic magma without magma mixing. Chemical composition of some feldspars from the explosive phase are equivalent to those found in El Abrigo eruption, the last caldera-forming episode (ca. 190 ka), demonstrating that PT-PV volcanic system is still capable of producing evolved and very explosive magmas., This research has been partially funded by a CSIC JaeIntro grant and the EC Grant EVE (DG ECHO Ref: 826292).

Ammonium, stemming from renal ammoniagenesis, is a major urinary proton buffer and is excreted along the collecting duct. This process depends on the concomitant secretion of ammonia by the ammonia channel RhCG and of protons by the vacuolar-type proton-ATPase pump. Thus, urinary ammonium content and urinary acidification are tightly linked. However, mice lacking Rhcg excrete more alkaline urine despite lower urinary ammonium, suggesting an unexpected role of Rhcg in urinary acidification. RhCG and the B1 and B2 proton-ATPase subunits could be co-immunoprecipitated from kidney. In ex vivo microperfused cortical collecting ducts (CCD) proton-ATPase activity was drastically reduced in the absence of Rhcg. Conversely, overexpression of RhCG in HEK293 cells resulted in higher proton secretion rates and increased B1 proton-ATPase mRNA expression. However, in kidneys from Rhcg -/- mice the expression of only B1 and B2 subunits was altered. Immunolocalization of proton-ATPase subunits together with immuno-gold detection of the A proton-ATPase subunit showed similar localization and density of staining in kidneys from Rhcg +/+ and Rhcg -/- mice. In order to test for a reciprocal effect of intercalated cell proton-ATPases on Rhcg activity, we assessed Rhcg and proton-ATPase activities in microperfused CCD from Atp6v1b1 -/- mice and showed reduced proton-ATPase activity without altering Rhcg activity. Thus, RhCG and proton-ATPase are located within the same cellular protein complex. RhCG may modulate proton-ATPase function and urinary acidification, whereas proton-ATPase activity does not affect RhCG function. This mechanism may help to coordinate ammonia and proton secretion beyond physicochemical driving forces.

Gaudin, D. et. al., Although it is relatively easy to set-up, the monitoring of soil temperature in sub-fumarolic areas is quite rarely used to monitor the evolution of hydrothermal systems. Indeed, measurements are highly sensitive to environmental conditions, in particular daily and seasonal variations of atmospheric temperatures and rainfalls, which can be only partially filtered by the established statistical analysis. In this paper, we develop two innovative processing methods, both based on the computation of the heat flux in the soil. The upward heat flux method (UHF), designed for dry environments, consists in computing both the conductive and convective components of the heat flux between two thermocouples placed vertically. In the cases of wet environments, the excess of total heat method (ETH) allows the integration of rain gauges data in order to correct the heat balance from the superficial cooling effect of the precipitations. The performances of both processing techniques are faced to established methods (temperature gradient and coefficient of determination) on soil temperature time series from two test volcanoes. At La Fossa di Vulcano (Italy), the UHF method undoubtedly detects three thermal crises between 2009 and 2012, enabling to quantify not only the intensity but also the precise timing of the heat flux increase with respect to corresponding geochemical and seismic crises. At La Soufrière de Guadeloupe (French Lesser Antilles), despite large rainfalls dramatically influencing the thermal behavior of the soil, a constant geothermal heat flux is retrieved by the ETH method, confirming the absence of fumarolic crisis during the observation period (February–August 2010). Being quantitative, robust, and usable in almost any context of sub-fumarolic zones, our two heat flux-based methods increase the potential of soil temperature for the monitoring, but also the general interpretation of fumarolic crises together with geochemical and seismological observations. Conducting long-term hazard assessment in active volcanic areas is of primary importance for land-use planning and defining emergency plans able to be applied in case of a crisis. A definition of scenario hazard maps helps to mitigate the consequences of future eruptions by anticipating the events that may occur. Lanzarote is an active volcanic island that has hosted the largest (> 1.5 km(3) DRE) and longest (6 years) eruption, the Timanfaya eruption (1730-1736), on the Canary Islands in historical times (last 600 years). This eruption brought severe economic losses and forced local people to migrate. In spite of all these facts, no comprehensive hazard assessment or hazard maps have been developed for the island. Research gaps in understanding flood changes at the catchment scale caused by changes in forest management, agricultural practices, artificial drainage, and terracing are identified. Potential strategies in addressing these gaps are proposed, such as complex systems approaches to link processes across time scales, long‐term experiments on physical‐chemical‐biological process interactions, and a focus on connectivity and patterns across spatial scales. We review the recent progress regarding the physics and applications of boron nitride bulk crystals and its epitaxial layers in various fields. First, we highlight its importance from optoelectronics side, for simple devices operating in the deep ultraviolet, in view of sanitary applications. Emphasis will be directed towards the unusually strong efficiency of the exciton-phonon coupling in this indirect band gap semiconductor. Second, we shift towards nanophotonics, for the management of hyper-magnification and of medical imaging. Here, advantage is taken of the efficient coupling of the electromagnetic field with some of its phonons, those interacting with light at 12 and 6 yin in vacuum. The large amount of geochemical variability in peridotitic and pyroxenitic xenoliths exhumed by Eocene to present-day magmas in Patagonia provides a unique opportunity to investigate the depletion and enrichment processes affecting the lithosphere in proximity of subduction settings and their relationships with magmatism. In this study, a review of the geochemical features of the Patagonian ultramafic xenoliths coupled with new SrNd isotopic data on clinopyroxene separates from representative suites enabled us to delineate the main melt extraction and enrichment (metasomatism vs. refertilisation) processes acting in these sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) portions. Our findings show that clinopyroxenes and orthopyroxenes in Patagonian harzburgites/lherzolites lie on two discrete Al2O3/Mg# trends and record variable partial melting degrees (1–30%), progressively decreasing southward, where the mantle domains experienced melt extraction in the past. The occurrence of both negative and positive correlations between (La/Yb)N, SrN, and Al2O3 in clinopyroxenes suggests that large part of the SCLM beneath Patagonia was affected by both metasomatic (low melt-fluid/rock ratio) and refertilisation (high melt-fluid/rock ratio or long-lasting low melt-fluid/rock interaction) processes, while a few portions - particularly in Southern Patagonia - were devoid of significant enrichment processes. A comprehensive study of the major/trace element composition and rare earth element patterns of clinopyroxene from both cumulitic and mantle xenoliths led us to hypothesize that tholeiitic enrichment was followed by infiltration of transitional/alkaline agents in the Northern and Central Patagonian SCLM. The percolation of melts with transitional affinity can be identified in some Central Patagonian localities. In Southern Patagonia clinopyroxenes record a slight interaction with alkaline and proto-adakitic agents; the latter occurred at Cerro Fraile, the locality nearest the trench. The SrNd xenolith isotopic signature led to speculation that enriched and depleted mantle components interacted variably in the SCLM domain beneath Patagonia. This work suggests that a detailed and comprehensive study of ultramafic xenoliths can help identify the evidence produced by magmatic events occurring at the surface, as both a serial affinity and a temporal sequence., This work is part of a co-tutorship Ph.D. held within the 2008 Vinci Project “Matter transfer in suprasubductivemantle in complex converging systems”. We present a multidisciplinary study to decipher the controls of deformation on fluid flow regime in fold and thrust belts using the Lower Pedraforca thrust sheet in the SE Pyrenees as an example. We integrate field-based and petrographic observations and geochemical and geochronological data to differentiate seven types of fractures, eight types of calcite cement (Cc1 to Cc8) and two sets of stylolites during the deformation stretching the studied thrust sheet. During syn-sedimentary hydroplastic normal faulting affecting poorly consolidated Upper Cretaceous and Eocene syn-orogenic sediments, calcite cement did not precipitate. During burial, bed-parallel stylolites formed and Cc1 and Cc2 precipitated from formation waters in a closed palaeohydrological system. During the layer-parallel shortening, Cc3 precipitated from formation waters (~+5.4‰ VSMOW) with 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.707922 and at ~70 °C. Cc4 precipitated from formation waters recording different burial conditions, as the up to 4‰ dispersion in δ18O of this cement suggests. Contrarily, during folding and thrusting, Cc5 to Cc7 precipitated in an open palaeohydrological system. Cc6 precipitated from formation waters (~+5‰ VSMOW), with 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.707817 and at ~75 °C. These fluids carried hydrocarbons and probably interacted with Upper Triassic evaporites. An 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.708230 for Cc5 indicates that formation waters also interacted with clays within continental deposits. During this period, stylolites formed in relation to faulting, and previous hydroplastic normal faults reactivated as reverse and strike-slip faults allowing fluid flow. Cc7 precipitated after Cc6, also from fluids in isotopic disequilibrium with their adjacent host rock. The fluid system continued open during the Oligocene, when Cc8 precipitated in normal faults affecting syn-orogenic conglomerates deposited during the reactivation of the Lower Pedraforca thrust sheet. We report a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the high pressure structural and vibrational properties of terbium sesquioxide (Tb2O3). Powder X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements show that cubic Ia3̅ (C-type) Tb2O3 undergoes two phase transitions up to 25 GPa. We observe a first irreversible reconstructive transition to the monoclinic C2/m (B-type) phase at ∼7 GPa and a subsequent reversible displacive transition from the monoclinic to the trigonal P3̅m1 (A-type) phase at ∼12 GPa. Thus, Tb2O3 is found to follow the well-known C → B → A phase transition sequence found in other cubic rare earth sesquioxides with cations of larger atomic mass than Tb. Our ab initio theoretical calculations predict phase transition pressures and bulk moduli for the three phases in rather good agreement with experimental results. Moreover, Raman-active modes of the three phases have been monitored as a function of pressure, while lattice-dynamics calculations have allowed us to confirm the assignment of the experimental phonon modes in the C- and A-type phases as well as to make a tentative assignment of the symmetry of most vibrational modes in the B-type phase. Finally, we extract the bulk moduli and the Raman-active mode frequencies together with their pressure coefficients for the three phases of Tb2O3. These results are thoroughly compared and discussed in relation to those reported for rare earth and other related sesquioxides as well as with new calculations for selected sesquioxides. U-Pb dating using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), δ13C, δ18O, clumped isotopes and 87Sr/86Sr analysis, and electron microprobe have been applied to fracture-filling calcites and host carbonates from the Lower Pedraforca thrust sheet, in the SE Pyrenees. These data are used to determine the type and origin of migrating fluids, the evolution of the palaeohydrological system and timing of fracturing during the emplacement of this thrust sheet, as described in the article “From hydroplastic to brittle deformation: controls on fluid flow in fold and thrust belts. Insights from the Lower Pedraforca thrust sheet (SE Pyrenees)” – Marine and Petroleum Geology (2020). The integration of these data is also used to compare the fluid flow evolution of the Southern Pyrenees with that of other orogens worldwide and to generate a fluid flow model in fold and thrust belts. At a more local scale, the U-Pb dataset provides new absolute ages recording the deformation in the Lower Pedraforca thrust sheet, which was previously dated by means of indirect methods such as biostratigraphy of marine sediments and magnetostratigraphy of continental deposits., The isotopic and electron microprobe analyses were carried out at “Centres Científics i Tecnològics” of the Universitat de Barcelona. Strontium analyses were done at the “CAI de Geocronología y Geoquímica Isotópica (UCM-CEI)” of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. U-Pb geochronology was accomplished at FIERCE (Frankfurt Isotope and Element Research Center, Goethe University). This is FIERCE contribution No. 37. Anticipating volcanic eruptions at central volcanoes require knowing how magma chambers prepare for new eruptions. Pre-eruptive processes that occur in such magma chambers are recorded in the products of these eruptions, so their characterisation in terms of magma composition and physics offers the clues to understand past eruptions and predict future ones. Here, we study the very well preserved pyroclastic succession of El Palomar Member (712 ± 41 ka), in Las Cañadas caldera, Teide, Canary Islands. This deposit resulted from a single explosive eruption of a phonolitic magma that started with a sustained eruption column (sub-plinian or plinian) that formed a massive, 40 m thick non-welded fallout deposit, progressively changing into a lower intensity fire fountain that deposited a 25 m thick fallout succession of non-welded to strongly welded pumices. Stratigraphic and petrological data suggest that this eruption was related to a thermally-compositionally zoned and relatively shallow magma chamber in which the arrival of a hotter and more mafic magma rapidly triggered the eruption. The studied deposit shows how this zoned structure was maintained during the whole process, which allows one to reconstruct what happened during the eruption. Comparison of this eruption with the current situation at Teide volcano alerts on the potential rapid preparation for new eruptions in the case that sufficient phonolitic magma was available in the shallow plumbing system of this active volcano if new inputs of deeper magma take place.

This article have a datasets associated "Regional centroid moment tensors for earthquakes in the 2016 South Alboran seismic crisis" http://hdl.handle.net/10261/177887, Large continental faults extend for thousands of kilometres to form boundaries between rigid tectonic blocks. These faults are associated with prominent topographic features and can produce large earthquakes. Here we show the first evidence of a major tectonic structure in its initial-stage, the Al-Idrissi Fault System (AIFS), in the Alboran Sea. Combining bathymetric and seismic reflection data, together with seismological analyses of the 2016 M-w 6.4 earthquake offshore Morocco - the largest event ever recorded in the area - we unveil a 3D geometry for the AIFS. We report evidence of left-lateral strike-slip displacement, characterise the fault segmentation and demonstrate that AIFS is the source of the 2016 events. The occurrence of the M-w 6.4 earthquake together with historical and instrumental events supports that the AIFS is currently growing through propagation and linkage of its segments. We investigate the highly anisotropic behavior of the in-plane and out-of-plane infrared-active phonons of hexagonal boron nitride by means of infrared reflectivity and absorption measurements under high pressure. Infrared reflectivity spectra at normal incidence on high-quality single crystals show strict fulfillment of selection rules and an unusually long E1u[transverse-optic (TO)] phonon lifetime. Accurate values of the dielectric constants at ambient pressure ϵ0= 6.96, ϵ∞= 4.95, ϵ 0= 3.37, and ϵ∞ = 2.84 have been determined from fits to the reflectivity spectra. The out-of-plane A2u phonon reflectivity band is revealed in measurements on an inclined facet, and absorption measurements at an incidence angle of 30° allow us to observe both the transverse- and longitudinal-optic A2u modes. Pressure coefficients and Grüneisen parameters for all infrared-active modes are determined and compared with ab initio calculations. While Grüneisen parameters are generally small in this layered crystal, the A2u(TO) displays an exceptionally large and negative Grüneisen parameter that results in widening of the type I hyperbolic region with increasing pressure. Mediterranean mountains have been extremely vulnerable to land degradation and soil erosion due to climate factors (summer hydric stress, high storminess) and the long history of human pressure on these terrestrial ecosystems. The short-time span of instrumental monitoring datasets limits our ability to obtain a full depiction of the long-term drivers controlling flood intensity and frequency and soil erosion in Mediterranean watersheds. Here we have applied a novel methodology based on detailed microfacies analyses on annually-laminated (varved) lacustrine sediments to reconstruct floods and seasonal sediment yield and denudation rates in a mountainous Mediterranean watershed during the last 2775 years. The sediment yield reconstruction in this study agrees reasonably well with soil erosion rates from Pyrenean experimental watersheds supporting the validity of this methodology to assess the soil erosion and sediment production from a long-term perspective. The comparison with instrumental precipitation datasets demonstrates the different seasonal sensitivity of sediment yield to heavy rainfall magnitudes mostly depending on soil moisture conditions, soil and regolith erodibility and vegetation cover. During periods of reduced human impact in the watershed, the seasonal maxima in sediment production occurred in autumn, which corresponds to the season with more frequent and intense heavy rainfall in the region. The highest soil erosion rates occurred during periods with higher human impact in the watershed due to sustained burning, overgrazing and cereals cultivation that modified the seasonal sediment yield distribution, with the highest sediment production happening in winter. The most significant periods of increased sediment yield occurred during the Middle Ages (1168–1239 CE) and the 19th century (1844–1866 CE) due to an interplay between increased frequencies and magnitudes of heavy rainfall and intensive agropastoral activities in the lake's watershed. Obduction is the tectonic process that results from thrusting of an oceanic lithosphere section (ophiolite) onto a continent. In contrast, thrusting of subcontinental mantle, observed in several mountain belts, remains a major unknown of plate tectonics. In the western Mediterranean, the Ronda and Beni Bousera peridotites are the largest worldwide subcontinental mantle exposure. From a geological point of view, the Ronda peridotites are exhumed by hyperstretching of the continental lithosphere in a back-arc immediately followed by thrusting, explaining their present-day position inside the Alboran crust. Using 2-D and 3-D modeling of new gravimetric data combined with local seismic tomography, we show that the Ronda peridotites are rooted inside the Alboran mantle along the entire Gibraltar arc. On these bases, we propose that the emplacement of the Ronda peridotites occurred in a back-arc setting and corresponds to the thrusting of an entire hyper-stretched continental margin onto a continent, a process that we define as continental margin obduction. This results from two successive deformation events: continental upper plate extension driven by slab roll-back, immediately followed by upper plate shortening, likely triggered when a buoyant continental domain enters the subduction. We propose that this process affected the entire western Alboran domain, with peridotite bodies embedded within the crust along the whole Gibraltar Arc. We suggest that other examples such as the Alps Ivrea mantle body could likely represent continental margin obduction at the onset of continental collision. ©2019. American Geophysical Union. The recent availability of isotopically pure samples of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has allowed the isotopic substitution effects to be studied in this highly interesting layered crystal. Here, we review the application of Raman scattering to investigate phonon anharmonic decay and its particularities in layered crystals, exemplified by h-BN. The modification of the phonon spectrum and anharmonic phonon decay paths in isotopically pure samples is specifically addressed. Detailed information about phonon lifetimes and decay channels is obtained for h-BN from a thorough analysis of temperature-dependent Raman scattering measurements in the light of density functional theory and perturbation theory calculations. The phonon lifetime is substantially increased in isotopically pure crystals, which may have important implications for the development of low-loss h-BN based phonon-polariton devices. Following the termination of the Messinian salinity crisis ~5.3 million years ago, massive sedimentation in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea formed the huge Nile Delta. Alongside delta propagation, a continental shelf was accreted along the Levant margin. For several decades it was assumed that these two sedimentary structures were closely connected. Levant shelf deposits are composed of Nile-derived sediments and present-day measurements show that sand is currently being transported alongshore from the Nile Delta to offshore Israel. This study reexamines the existing paradigm about sediment transport and shelf-delta connection. We show that longshore sand transport is just a small part of a much larger process termed here margin-parallel sediment transport (MPST). Sand is transported in a nearshore shallow-water belt where marine currents are highly energetic. At the same time, shale is transported at greater depths over the deeper shelf and the continental slope where marine currents are weaker. To model the accretion of the Levant shelf alongside the Nile Delta we use a 3D, diffusion-based, stratigraphic modeling tool (DionisosFlow) with a new module representing MPST. Our results show that margin-parallel transport of silt and clay in the deeper waters accounts for the bulk of deposition offshore Israel and is responsible for the development of the Levant shelf. Moreover, though MPST has begun coevally with delta formation, massive accretion of the Levant shelf was delayed by 2–3 My. Initially, a continental shelf formed offshore Sinai, then offshore Israel, and most recently along the Lebanon coast. Our model also demonstrates the significant lithological differences observed between sedimentation in front of the Nile River mouth and along adjacent continental margin. High energy down-slope sediment transport carries sand, silt, and clay, whereas margin-parallel currents are relatively weak and carry mainly silt and clay. One exception within the margin-parallel system is the highly energetic nearshore current that transports sand. We modeled the geometrical roughening of bedding-parallel, mainly layer-dominated stylolites in order to understand their structural evolution, to present an advanced classification of stylolite shapes and to relate this classification to chemical compaction and permeability variations at stylolites. Stylolites are rough dissolution seams that develop in sedimentary basins during chemical compaction. In the Zechstein 2 carbonate units, an important lean gas reservoir in the southern Permian Zechstein basin in Germany, stylolites influence local fluid flow, mineral replacement reactions and hence the permeability of the reservoir. Our simulations demonstrate that layer-dominated stylolites can grow in three distinct stages: an initial slow nucleation phase, a fast layer-pinning phase and a final freezing phase if the layer is completely dissolved during growth. Dissolution of the pinning layer and thus destruction of the stylolite's compaction tracking capabilities is a function of the background noise in the rock and the dissolution rate of the layer itself. Low background noise needs a slower dissolving layer for pinning to be successful but produces flatter teeth than higher background noise. We present an advanced classification based on our simulations and separate stylolites into four classes: (1) rectangular layer type, (2) seismogram pinning type, (3) suture/sharp peak type and (4) simple wave-like type. Rectangular layer type stylolites are the most appropriate for chemical compaction estimates because they grow linearly and record most of the actual compaction (up to 40 mm in the Zechstein example). Seismogram pinning type stylolites also provide good tracking capabilities, with the largest teeth tracking most of the compaction. Suture/sharp peak type stylolites grow in a non-linear fashion and thus do not record most of the actual compaction. However, when a non-linear growth law is used, the compaction estimates are similar to those making use of the rectangular layer type stylolites. Simple wave-like stylolites are not useful for compaction estimates, since their growth is highly non-linear with a very low growth exponent. In the case where sealing material is collected at the tooth during dissolution, stylolites can act as barriers for local fluid flow as they intensify sealing capabilities of pinning layers. However, the development of teeth and spikes offsets and thus destroys continuous stylolite seams so that the permeability across the stylolite becomes very heterogeneous and they are no continuous barriers. This behavior is best shown in rectangular layer and seismogram pinning type stylolites that develop efficient fluid barriers at teeth tips but destroy sealing capabilities of layers by offsetting them at the flank, leading to a permeability anisotropy along 2-D stylolite planes. Suture/sharp peak stylolites can create fluid barriers if they collect enough sealing material. However, if the collecting material does not seal or if spikes offset the sealing material the stylolite leaks. We propose that our classification can be used to realistically estimate chemical compaction in reservoirs and gives an indication on how heterogeneous the permeability of stylolites can be.

Defining the structural style of fold-and-thrust belts is an important step for understanding the factors that control their long- and short-term dynamics, for comprehending seismic hazard associated with them, and for assessing their economic potential. While the thin-skinned model (no basement involvement) has long been the driving methodology for cross section construction and restoration of foreland fold-and-thrust belts, a wealth of new geological and geophysical studies have shown that they are often thick-skinned, that is, basement-involved.

In diapir flanks, unconformity-bounded sedimentary packages associated with gravity-driven deposits, controlled by the ratio between the rates of sediment accumulation and diapir growth can be interpreted in the context of halokinetic sequences. The Bakio Breccias Formation (Basque Country, Spain) corresponds to redeposited carbonate deposit that developed in response to the Bakio diapir growth during the Middle Albian. These deposits provide on of the rare documented example of carbonate-dominated halokinetic sequences. The Bakio Breccias Formation consists of an alternation of clast- and matrix-supported breccias, calcirudite, calcarenite and marl, deposited along the flanks of the diapir. The description and the analysis of the Bakio Breccias Formation lead to a new model for carbonate-dominated halokinetic sequences. These sequences differ from their siliciclastic counterpart because sediment accumulation rate is controlled by carbonate platform growth on the topographic relief top of the diapirs, while sediments are preferentially deposited in the mini-basins adjacent of the diapirs, in siliciclastic settings. During transgressive system tract, carbonate platform are able to keep up with the sea level rise and to aggrade on top of the diapirs, forming thick and resistant roof, which is assumed to limit the diapir growth and thus to favour the development of halokinetic sequences with low angle unconformities (wedge halokinetic sequences). During late highstand system tract deposition (and lowstand system tract if present), platform progradation results in high sediment accumulation in the adjacent depocenters, loading the autochthonous salt layer and promote diapir growth and creation of topographic relief. In addition, if the diapir roof reaches emersion, karstification of the carbonate platform top may also favour roof destruction and diapir growth. Depending on the thickness of the roof developed previously and the amplitude of the sea level fall, the halokinetic sequences with the emersion and the karstification of the carbonate platform may display high angle unconformities (hook halokinetic sequences). Furthermore, gravity-driven deposits are assumed to be more common in carbonate-dominated halokinetic sequences, compared to their siliciclastic counterparts, since carbonate platform aggradation creates steep slopes on the diapir margins, leading to the partial collapse of the margin, even when limited diapir growth occurs. The Sivas Basin in central-eastern Anatolia is a north-verging salt-bearing fold-and-thrust belt including synorogenic salt tectonics. It formed between the northern leading edge of the Taurides platform and the K¿rs¿ehir block since Late Cretaceous time. We have constructed five regional cross-sections supported by field data and 2D seismic to constrain the structure of the basin and its evolution. The area is divided into three tectonic domains from south to north: (1) a Maastrichtian to Eocene north-verging fold-and-thrust belt, which terminates by a regional Eocene evaporitic level; (2) an Oligo-Miocene salt domain which contains two generations of minibasins separated by a salt canopy, forming a salt-and-thrust belt; and (3) a late Miocene to present day foreland basin. The cross-sections show the along-strike variations and the increasing shortening in the fold-and-thrust belt from west (c. 15 km) to east (c. 25 km). The thick salt allows for the intracutaneous propagation of the fold-and-thrust belt below a domain of salt withdrawal minibasins, decoupled as the initial salt thickness increases. In that case, the salt domain is thrusted both frontward and backward. Observations and inversion of the eigenfrequencies of free oscillations constitute powerful tools to investigate the internal structure of a planet. On Mars, such free oscillations can be excited by atmospheric pressure and wind stresses from the Martian atmosphere, analogous to what occurs on Earth. Over long periods and on a global scale, this phenomenon may continuously excite Mars' background free oscillations (MBFs), which constitute the so-called Martian hum. However, the source exciting MBFs is related both to the global-scale atmospheric circulation on Mars and to the variations in pressure and wind at the planetary boundary layer, for which no data are available.To overcome this drawback, we focus herein on a global-scale source and use results of simulations based on General Circular Models (GCMs). GCMs can predict and reproduce long-term, global-scale Martian pressure and wind variations and suggest that, contrary to what happens on Earth, daily correlations in the Martian hum might be generated by the solar-driven GCM. After recalling the excitation terms, we calculate MBFs by using GCM computations and estimate the contribution to the hum made by the global atmospheric circulation. Although we work at the lower limit of MBF signals, the results indicate that the signal is likely to be periodic, which would allow us to use more efficient stacking theories than can be applied to Earth's hum. We conclude by discussing the perspectives for the InSight SEIS instrument to detect the Martian hum. The amplitude of the MBF signal is on the order of nanogals and is therefore hidden by instrumental and thermal noise, which implies that, provided the predicted daily coherence in hum excitation is present, the InSight SEIS seismometer should be capable of detecting the Martian hum after monthly to yearly stacks.

We present an infrared reflectance and transmission study of a pressure-induced phase transition of boron nitride from the hexagonal layered structure to the wurtzitic phase. The transition is completed at about 13 GPa. The phase transition is nonreversible and the optical features of the metastable wurtzitic phase are retained after a pressure cycle from 20.5 GPa down to ambient pressure. This allows the infrared-active optical phonons and the dielectric properties of the cold-pressed wurtzitic boron nitride sample to be studied over the whole range of pressures. Experimental permittivity values of ϵ∞ = 6.65 ± 0.03 and ϵ0 = 4.50 ± 0.05 are determined from fits to the reflectance spectra at ambient pressure. Accurate values of the refractive index in the mid-infrared and visible-ultraviolet regions are evaluated from the interference patterns. Contrary to the h-BN case, the refractive index of w-BN decreases slightly with pressure, on account of the much lower compressibility of the close-packed structure. Objectives To assess recent trends in susceptibility to antibiotics among urinary isolates isolated in European emergency departments (EDs) and to identify isolates with a high (90% or more) predicted probability of susceptibility to fluoroquinolones or third-generation cephalosporins (3GCs). Methods In this cross-sectional study, we included urine cultures obtained from adult patients between 2010 and 2016 in 24 European EDs. Temporal trends were assessed using time-series analysis and multivariate logistic models. Multivariate logistic models were also used to predict susceptibility to fluoroquinolones or 3GCs from patient age and sex, year, month and ED. Results We included 88242 isolates. Time-series analysis found a significant increase in susceptibility to fluoroquinolones and no significant trend for susceptibility to 3GCs. Adjusting for patient age and sex, ED and organism, multivariate models showed that susceptibility to 3GCs decreased from 2014 to 2016, while susceptibility to fluoroquinolones increased in 2015 and 2016. Among isolates from 2016, multivariate models predicted high probability of susceptibility to fluoroquinolones in 11% of isolates (positive predictive value 91%) and a high probability of susceptibility to 3GCs in 35% of isolates (positive predictive value 94%). Conclusions Susceptibility of ED urinary isolates to fluoroquinolones increased from 2014, while susceptibility to 3GCs decreased from 2015. Predictive models identified isolates with a high probability of susceptibility to fluoroquinolones or 3GCs. The ability of such models to guide the empirical treatment of pyelonephritis in the ED remains to be determined.

We present the first regional balanced and restored sections across the northwestern part of the Zagros Fold-and-Thrust Belt in Kurdistan Region of Iraq and a 2D kinematic model that illustrates the evolution of the belt since Late Cretaceous time. The balanced cross-section, based on surface and sub-surface data, is characterized by multi-detachment folds detached above a Lower Triassic basal ductile level, with intermediate detachment levels that induced internal complexities like accommodation thrusting and/or disharmonic folding. Our work suggests that the two main structural steps in the detachment level in the High Folded Zone may be related to low-angle thrusts rooted at the brittle/ductile transition. Growth strata of Late Cretaceous and Paleocene times have been recognized for the first time in the Kurdistan Fold-and-Thrust Belt. This allows us to constrain timing of deformation and to estimate the evolution of the shortening and the advance of the deformation front since Late Cretaceous. EGU General Assembly in Viena, Austria 7–12 April 2019, The Teide-Pico Viejo active volcanic complex (TPV) started to grow up about 180 ka ago at the interior of the Las Cañadas caldera, in the island of Tenerife. This volcanic depression originated by several vertical collapses of the former Tenerife central volcanic edifice (Las Cañadas edifice) following explosive emptying of high-level magma chambers. Occasional lateral collapses of the volcano flanks also occurred and modified the northern side of the caldera depression. These twin stratovolcanoes derive from the interaction of two different shallow magma systems that evolved simultaneously, giving rise to a complete series from basalt to phonolite The structure and volcanic stratigraphy of the TPV was initially established based on a detailed field and petrological studies. However, this volcanic complex has also been the focus of a number of geophysical studies that have provided a detailed imaging of its interior, including its plumbing system. The combination of these geophysical results with those from the previous stratigraphic and petrological studies, as well as the information gathered from the geology of the subhorizontal water galleries drilled on different sector of Tenerife, and from recent experimental petrology studies, offers a unique set of data that permits to construct a detailed 3D model of one of the largest intraplate oceanic volcanoes of the World. In this contribution we present the first 3D model of the TPV complex obtained by combining the available geological and geophysical data and discuss about the implications of the resulting model on volcano evolution, eruption dynamics, and potential for future activity., This contribution is part of the European Commission grant EVE (DG ECHO Ref: 826292)

Short- and long-term processes at or close to the subduction plate interface (e.g.,mineral transformations, fluid release, seismicity and more generally deformation) might be more closely related than previously thought. Increasing evidence from the fossil rock record suggests that some episodes of their long geological evolution match or are close to timescales of the seismic cycle. This contribution uses rocks recovered (episodically) from subduction zones, together with insights from thermomechanical modelling, to provide a new dynamic vision of the nature, structure and properties of the plate interface and to bridge the gap between the mechanical behavior of active subduction zones (e.g.,coupling inferred from geophysical monitoring) and fossil ones (e.g.,coupling required to detach and recover subducted slab fragments). Based on critical observations and an exhaustive compilation of worldwide subducted oceanic units (for which the presence near the plate interface, rock types, pressure, temperature, T/P gradients, thickness and timing of detachment can be assessed), the present study demonstrates how long-term mechanical coupling exerts a key control on detachment from the slab and potential rock recovery. Critical assessment of rock T/P characteristics indicates that these fragments can indeed be used as natural probes and provide reliable information on subduction interface dynamics down to ~2.8 GPa. Rock clusters are identified at depths of 30, 55–60 and 80 km, with some differences between rock types. Data also reveal a first-order evolution with subduction cooling (in the first ~5 Myr), which is interpreted as reflecting a systematic trend from strong to weak mechanical coupling, after which subduction is lubricated and mostly inhibits rock recovery. Two passive seismic profiles have been acquired in the eastern Pyrenees as part of the Pyrope and Orogen projects to investigate the crustal structure differences between this area and the central and western Pyrenees. Up to 28 broad-band stations were deployed along two orthogonal lines, with an interstation spacing close to 10 km. High frequency receiver functions allowed us to obtain the main lithospheric interfaces along those lines. The NNE-SSW profile shows a well-defined Moho beneath Iberia, slightly deepening northwards. Beneath the Axial zone the Moho appears to be segmented but does not show evidence of crustal imbrication. Further North, the Moho appears again as a continuous interface located around 30 km depth. This image clearly differs from the conspicuous imbrication between the Iberian and Eurasian crusts observed westward. The E-W profile shows a smooth Moho thinning from a 40 km depth to the west of the profile to 23 km close to the coastline, evidencing the crustal thinning related to the Neogene extensional processes. Additional constraints on the geometry of the crust/mantle boundary in the Eastern Pyrenees are obtained from local moderate magnitude earthquakes recorded along the seismic lines during the experiment. In particular, a fan profile built from an event located near the Mediterranean coast suggests that crustal thickness differences between Iberian and Eurasian crusts can still be recognized 30 km westward of the Mediterranean coast, in an area that seems to mark the limit between regions dominated by compressive and extensive processes. We propose a model in which the observed dissimilar Moho structure beneath the Eastern Pyrenees is interpreted as the result of a different Mesozoic pre-shortening margin configuration. The island of New Guinea is the result of continent-arc collision that began building the island's Central Range during the late Miocene. Recent studies have shown that rapid subduction, uplift and exhumation events took place in response to rapid, oblique convergence between the Pacific and the Australian plates. The tectonic and sedimentary evolution of Cenderawasih Bay, in the northwestern part of the New Guinea Island is still poorly understood: this bay links a major structural block, the Kepala Burung block, to the island's Central Ranges. Previous studies have shown that Cenderawasih Bay contains a thick (>8 km) sequence of undated sediments. One hypothesis claims that the embayment resulted from a 3 Ma opening created by anticlockwise rotation of the Kepala Burung block with respect to the northern rim of the Australian plate. Alternatively, the current configuration of Cenderawasih Bay could have resulted from the southwest drift of a slice of volcanics and oceanic crust between 8 and 6 Ma. We test these hypotheses using (i) a geomorphologic analysis of the drainage network dynamics, (ii) a reassessment of available thermochronological data, and (iii) seismic lines interpretation. We suggest that sediments started to accumulate in Cenderawasih Bay and onshore in the Waipoga Basin in the late Miocene since the inception of growth of the Central Range, beginning at 12 Ma, resulting in sediment accumulation of up to 12,200 m. This evidence is more consistent with the second hypothesis, and the volume of sediment accumulated means it is unlikely that the embayment was the result of recent (2–3 Ma) rotation of structural blocks. At first order, we predict that infilling is mainly composed of siliciclastics sourced in the graphite-bearing Ruffaer Metamorphic Belt and its equivalent in the Weyland Overthrust. Ophiolites, volcanic arc rocks and diorites contribute minor proportions. From the unroofing paths in the Central Range we deduce two rates of solid phase accumulation (SPAR) since 12 Ma, the first one at a mean SPAR ranging between 0.12 and 0.25 mm/a with a maximum SPAR of 0.23–0.58 mm/a, and the second during the last 3 Ma, at a mean SPAR ranging between 0.93 and 1.62 mm/a and with a maximum SPAR between 2.13 and 3.17 mm/a, i.e., 6700–10,000 m of Plio-Pleistocene sediment accumulation. In natural doubly vergent orogens, the relationship between the pro- and retro-wedges is, as yet, poorly constrained. We present a detailed tectonostratigraphic study of the retro-wedge of the Eastern Pyrenees (Europe) and link its evolution to that of the pro-wedge (Iberia) in order to derive insight into the crustal-scale dynamics of doubly vergent orogens. Based on cross-section restoration and subsidence analyses, we divide the East Pyrenean evolution into four phases. The first phase (Late Cretaceous) is characterized by closure of an exhumed mantle domain between the Iberian and European plates and inversion of a salt-rich, thermally unequilibrated rift system. Overall shortening (~1 mm/yr) was distributed roughly equally between both margins over some 20 Myr. A quiescent phase (Paleocene) was apparently restricted to the retro-wedge with slow, continuous deformation in the pro-wedge (~0.4 mm/yr). This phase occurred between closure of the exhumed mantle domain and onset of main collision. The main collision phase (Eocene) records the highest shortening rate (~3.1 mm/yr), which was predominantly accommodated in the pro-wedge. During the final phase (Oligocene), the retro-wedge was apparently inactive, and shortening of the pro-wedge slowed (~2.2 mm/yr). Minimum total shortening of the Eastern Pyrenees is ~111 km, excluding closure of the exhumed mantle domain. The retro-wedge accommodated ~20 km of shortening. The shortening distribution between the pro- and retro-wedges evolved from roughly equal during rift inversion to pro-dominant during main collision. The elastic constants of high-quality, single-crystal hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have been measured by means of high resolution Brillouin spectroscopy using a modified reflected light microscope. The sound propagation velocity in the c-axis direction and perpendicular to the c-axis have been obtained from the Brillouin frequency shift, with a proper account taken of the vast difference between the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices recently reported in the highly anisotropic layered h-BN crystal. The elastic constants c11 and c33 obtained from the Brillouin experiments are somewhat lower than previous determinations based on inelastic x-ray measurements and confirm the overestimation of the h-BN elastic constants by ab initio calculations based on density functional perturbation theory in the local density approximation., This work was supported by the Spanish MINECO/FEDER under Contract Nos. Carbonate escarpments are submarine limestone and dolomite cliffs that have been documented in numerous sites around the world. Their geomorphic evolution is poorly understood due to difficulties in assessing escarpment outcrops and the limited resolution achieved by geophysical techniques across their steep topographies. The geomorphic evolution of carbonate escarpments in the Mediterranean Sea has been influenced by the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC). During the MSC (5.97–5.33 Ma), the Mediterranean Sea became a saline basin due to a temporary restriction of the Atlantic-Mediterranean seaway, resulting in the deposition of more than one million cubic kilometres of salt. The extent and relative chronology of the evaporative drawdown phases associated to the MSC remain poorly constrained. In this paper we combine geophysical and sedimentological data from the central Mediterranean Sea to reconstruct the geomorphic evolution of the Malta Escarpment and infer the extent and timing of evaporative drawdown in the eastern Mediterranean Sea during the MSC. We propose that, during a MSC base-level fall, fluvial erosion formed a dense network of canyons across the Malta Escarpment whilst coastal erosion developed extensive palaeoshorelines and shore platforms. A. Micallef et. al., The Messinian salinity crisis (MSC)-the most abrupt, global-scale environmental change since the end of the Cretaceous-is widely associated with partial desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea. A major open question is the way normal marine conditions were abruptly restored at the end of the MSC. Here we use geological and geophysical data to identify an extensive, buried and chaotic sedimentary body deposited in the western Ionian Basin after the massive Messinian salts and before the Plio-Quaternary open-marine sedimentary sequence. We show that this body is consistent with the passage of a megaflood from the western to the eastern Mediterranean Sea via a south-eastern Sicilian gateway. The giant birefringence of layered h-BN was demonstrated by analyzing the interference patterns in reflectance and transmittance measurements in the mid-infrared to the deep ultraviolet energy range. The refractive index for polarization perpendicular to the c axis is much higher than the refractive index for polarization parallel to the c axis, and it displays a strong increase in the ultraviolet range that is attributed to the huge excitonic effects arising from the unique electronic structure of h-BN. Thus, h-BN is shown to exhibit a giant negative birefringence that ranges from -0.7 in the visible to -2 in the deep ultraviolet close to the band gap. The electronic dielectric constants for polarization perpendicular and parallel to the c axis were determined to be epsilon(perpendicular to)(infinity) = 4.95 and epsilon(parallel to)(infinity) = 2.86, respectively. We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the lattice dynamics of cubic Tb2O3. Up to 16 optical Raman‐active modes have been observed with polarized and unpolarized Raman scattering measurements on a high‐quality Tb2O3 single crystal. The measured wavenumbers have been compared with those of other rare‐earth (RE) and related sesquioxides with cubic (C‐type or bixbyite) structure. First‐principles calculations have allowed us to assign the symmetry of the experimentally observed Raman‐active modes. Additional lattice‐dynamical calculations on the related cubic RE sesquioxides Dy2O3, Gd2O3, Eu2O3, and Sm2O3 indicate that the phonon wavenumbers of the Raman‐active modes in these compounds are monotonically reduced with increasing the lattice parameter along the Dy2O3‐Tb2O3‐Gd2O3‐Eu2O3‐Sm2O3 series, thus prompting for a revision of the experimental Raman spectra of some of these compounds (mainly Eu2O3 but also Gd2O3)., This study was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad under Projects MAT2015‐ 71070‐REDC, MAT2015‐71035‐R, MAT2016‐75586‐C4‐2‐ P/3‐P, and FIS2017‐2017‐83295‐P.

International audience; Increased soil erosion, pressure on agricultural land, and climate change highlight the need for new management methods to mitigate soil loss. Management strategies should utilize comparable data sets of long‐term soil erosion monitoring across multiple environments. Adaptive soil erosion management in regions with intense precipitation requires an understanding of inter‐annual variability in sediment yield (SY) at regional scales. Here, a novel approach is proposed for analysing regional SY. We aimed to (i) investigate factors controlling inter‐ and intra‐annual SY, (ii) combine seasonality and time compression analyses to explore SY variability and (iii) discuss management implications for different Mediterranean environments. Continuous SY measurements totalling 104 years for eight small catchments were used to describe SY variability, which ranged from 0 to 271 t/ha/year and 0 to 116 t/ha/month. Maximum SY occurs in spring to summer for catchments with oceanic climates, while semi‐arid or dry summer climates experience SY minimums. We identified three time compression patterns at each time scale. Time compression was most intense for catchments with minimum SY in spring to summer. Low time compression was linked to very high soil loss, low run‐off and sediment production thresholds, and high connectivity. Reforestation, grassland and terracing changed SY magnitudes and time compression, but failed to reduce SY for large storm events. Periods with a high probability of high SY were identified using a combination of intra‐annual SY variability, seasonality analysis, and time compression analysis. Focusing management practices on monthly flow events, which account for the majority of SY, will optimise returns in Mediterranean catchments.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a layered crystal that is attracting a great deal of attention as a promising material for nanophotonic applications. The strong optical anisotropy of this crystal is key to exploit polaritonic modes for manipulating light-matter interactions in 2D materials. h-BN has also great potential for solid-state neutron detection and neutron imaging devices, given the exceptionally high thermal neutron capture cross section of the boron-10 isotope. A good knowledge of phonons in layered crystals is essential for harnessing long-lived phonon-polariton modes for nanophotonic applications and may prove valuable for developing solid-state BN10 neutron detectors with improved device architectures and higher detection efficiencies. Although phonons in graphene and isoelectronic materials with a similar hexagonal layer structure have been studied, the effect of isotopic substitution on the phonons of such lamellar compounds has not been addressed yet. Here we present a Raman scattering study of the in-plane high-energy Raman active mode on isotopically enriched single-crystal h-BN. Phonon frequency and lifetime are measured in the 80-600-K temperature range for B10-enriched, B11-enriched, and natural composition high quality crystals. Their temperature dependence is explained in the light of perturbation theory calculations of the phonon self-energy. The effects of crystal anisotropy, isotopic disorder, and anharmonic phonon-decay channels are investigated in detail. The isotopic-induced changes in the phonon density of states are shown to enhance three-phonon anharmonic decay channels in B10-enriched crystals, opening the possibility of isotope tuning of the anharmonic phonon decay processes. © 2018 American Physical Society., This work has been financially supported by the Spanish MINECO/FEDER under Contract No. MAT2015-71035-R. Ocean activity produces continuous and ubiquitous seismic energy mostly in the 2¿20 s period band, known as microseismic noise. Between 2 and 10 s period, secondary microseisms (SM) are generated by swell reflections close to the shores and/or by opposing swells in the deep ocean. However, unique conditions are required in order for surface waves generated by deep-ocean microseisms to be observed on land. By comparing short-duration power spectral densities at both Atlantic shoreline and inland seismic stations, we show that ocean tides strongly modulate the seismic energy in a wide period band except between 2.5 and 5 s. This tidal proxy reveals the existence of an ex situ short-period contribution of the SM peak. Comparison with swell spectra at surrounding buoys suggests that the largest part of this extra energy comes from deep ocean-generated microseisms. The energy modulation might be also used in numerical models of microseismic generation to constrain coastal reflection coefficients.

We compare these two source-to-sink systems to highlight the tectonic control on sedimentary flux, provenance and SPAR in the Cenderawasih Bay and Gulf of Papua.

The most severe biotic crisis on Earth history occurred during the Permian–Triassic (PT) transition around 252 Ma. Whereas in the marine realm such extinction event is well-constrained, in terrestrial settings it is still poorly known, mainly due to the lack of suitable complete sections. This is utterly the case along the Western Tethys region, located at Pangaea's equator, where terrestrial successions are typically build-up of red beds often characterised by a significant erosive gap at the base of the Triassic strata. Henceforth, documenting potentially complete terrestrial successions along the PT transition becomes fundamental. Here, we document the exceptional Coll de Terrers area from the Catalan Pyrenees (NE Iberian Peninsula), for which a multidisciplinary research is conducted along the PT transition. The red-bed succession, located in a long E-W extended narrow rift system known as Pyrenean Basin, resulted from a continuous sedimentary deposition evolving from meandering (lower Upper Red Unit) to playa-lake/ephemeral lacustrine (upper Upper Red Unit) and again to meandering settings (Buntsandstein facies). Sedimentary continuity is suggested by preliminary cyclostratigraphic analysis that warrants further analysis. Our combined sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical data infer a humid-semiarid-humid climatic trend across the studied succession. The uppermost Permian strata, deposited under an orbitally controlled monsoonal regime, yields a relatively diverse ichnoassemblage mainly composed of tetrapod footprints and arthropod trace fossils. Such fossils indicate appropriate life conditions and water presence in levels that also display desiccation structures. These levels alternate with barren intervals formed under dry conditions, being thus indicative of strong seasonality. All these features are correlated with those reported elsewhere in Gondwana and Laurasia, and suggest that the Permian–Triassic boundary might be recorded somewhere around the Buntsandstein base. Consequently, Coll de Terrers and the whole Catalan Pyrenees become key regions to investigate in detail the Permian extinction event and the Triassic ecosystems recovery. © 2017 Elsevier B.V., E.
