Abstract: International audience; Incorporation of agriculture unused by-products into materials is a relevant strategy to develop sustainable and profitable biobased products while limiting environmental impacts of plastics. In addition, the design of such biomaterials with 3D printing techniques as FDM allow to bring them new functionalities. However, the plant material properties and the interactions with the polymeric matrix are critical to control throughout the process, from filament production to 3D printing, to obtain a high-quality material.In this study, flax shives were selectively milled and then, used as a starting plant by-product to be grafted to a fluorophore whose fluorescence varies under pH. The resulting fluorescent shives were processed with poly-(butylene-terephthalate) (PBAT) by extrusion to produce a filament reinforced with 10%-wt of flax shives (whose 10% were grafted), which was 3D printed. Extensive microstructural characterization (particle size and shape analysis, X-ray microtomography) demonstrated that flax particles are homogeneously distributed into the 3D printed material. Despite the relatively low content of fluorescent flax shives in the final 3D printed material (1%-wt) and successive heating stages (during extrusion and 3D printing), a strong fluorescent emission could still be measured.This work paves the way for using flax shives as reinforcements into composites while conferring them fluorescent properties, thus making 4D materials with potential applications as sensors depending on the fluorophore used.

Abstract: This paper is a substantially revised version of the SEEDS Working Paper 01/2020 : http://www.sustainability-seeds.org/papers/RePec/srt/wpaper/0120.pdf; This paper reconsiders the international technology diffusion model. Because the high degree of uncertainty surrounding the Data Generating Process and the likely presence of nonlinearities and latent common factors, it considers alternative nonparametric panel specifications which extend the Common Correlated Effects approach and then contrasts the out-of-sample performance of them with those of more common parametric models. To do so, we extend a recently proposed data-driven model choice approach, which takes its roots on cross validation and aims at testing whether two competing approximate models are equivalent in terms of their expected true error, to the case of cross-sectionally dependent panels, by exploiting moving block bootstrap resampling methods and assessing forecasting performances of competing models. Our results indicate that the adoption of a fully nonparametric specification provides better performances. This work also refines previous results by showing threshold effects, nonlinearities and interactions, which are obscured in parametric specifications and which have relevant implications for policy.

Abstract: This paper discusses a model of two interconnected chemostats in series, characterized by biomass mortality. A comparison is established with a single chemostat of the same total volume in two different cases, that are with or without mortality rate. The outlet substrate concentration and the biogas flow rate are the main criteria for comparison. According to conditions depending on the operating parameters and the distribution of the total volume, our results show which structure, the series of chemostats or the single chemostat, performs better in terms of minimizing the outlet substrate concentration or maximizing the biogas flow rate, and this with or without account on mortality. Moreover, the differences and similarities in the results corresponding to the case with mortality and the one without mortality, are highlighted.

Abstract: International audience; The development of digital technologies is one of the solutions being implemented to empower the food industry, especially now, when the sector is struggling to meet sustainable development goals by 2030. The attention of digital solutions has been widely given to its use at the production segment of the food value chains; that is, on-farm activities. We argue that digital technologies can enhance productivity and resilience along the entire food value chain, while increasing sustainability in this domain. Our results show complete digitalization of food value chains in France, driven by innovative start-ups, with some stages more digitalized than others. Indeed, digital technologies are shown to support the three dimensions of sustainable development goals: economic, social, and environmental. However, their benefits should be equally accessible to all actors in this field, and we therefore suggest further research.

Abstract: International audience; Small reservoirs have traditionally been used worldwide to store surface water, but are complex to manage. Accounting for a water resource scattered across thousands of water bodies remains challenging. Images acquired using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), which are already used in different ways in hydrology, could provide additional support. We evaluated the use of UAVs as an alternative way to derive bathymetric data from the topography of a small reservoir. Digital elevation models (DEMs, 58) were produced from UAV imagery and in-situ Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) points using standard structure from motion (SfM) and interpolation methods. Image processing was able to produce DEMs with 10 times the vertical accuracy of DGPS-point interpolation methods for similar accuracy in determining the relationships between the water height, surface area, and reservoir volume. These results suggest that the SfM photogrammetry can be used to derive bathymetry data from UAV images.; Les petits barrages sont, dans le monde entier, traditionnellement utilisés pour stocker les eaux de surface. Leur gestion demeure complexe du fait de la difficulté à comptabiliser une ressource en eau dispersée parmi des milliers de petits plans d'eau. Une aide non négligeable pourrait provenir des images aériennes basse altitude acquises à l'aide de véhicules aériens sans pilote (UAV), par ailleurs déjà très utilisées en hydrologie. Nous proposons donc d’évaluer l'utilisation des drones comme moyen alternatif pour obtenir des données bathymétriques à partir de la topographie d'un petit barrage. Des modèles numériques de terrain (MNT, 58 au total) ont été produits à partir d'images acquises par un drone commercial et à partir de points mesurés au DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) en utilisant des méthodes de Structure from Motion (SfM) et des méthodes d'interpolation standards. Le traitement d'images a permis de produire des MNT avec une précision verticale 10 fois supérieure à celle des méthodes d'interpolation des points DGPS pour une précision similaire dans la détermination des relations entre la hauteur d'eau, la surface et le volume du réservoir. Ces résultats montrent que la photogrammétrie SfM peut être utilisée avantageusement pour dériver des données bathymétriques à partir d'images de drones.

Abstract: International audience; This article follows the evolution of the look on cow's milk-based breast-milk substitutes, from the development of a first formula at the end of the 19th century, to the questions they raise at the beginning of the 21st century. In this timeframe, they have gone from being seen as a ‘good food’ for infants to being a subject of mistrust and anxiety. Three historic periods are analysed: 1) the development of the first industrial formulas at the end of the 19th century; 2) their rapid success, in a context of medicalisation of food at the beginning and middle of the 20th century; 3) and finally their questioning since the end of the 20th century, in a context where breast milk substitutes are at the centre of sanitary crises, and where the rise of industrialisation of the food system in general is questioned. This work is based on the literature published in the human and social sciences from the 1980s onwards.; L’article propose de suivre l’évolution du regard porté sur les substituts au lait maternel à base de lait de vache, depuis la mise au point d’une première formule à la fin du XIXe siècle, jusqu’aux questionnements dont ils font l’objet au début du XXIe siècle. Dans cet intervalle de temps, ils sont passés du statut de la « bonne alimentation » du nourrisson, à celui qui suscite la méfiance et l’anxiété. Trois périodes historiques sont analysées : 1) le développement des premières formulations à la fin du XIXe siècle ; 2) leur rapide succès, dans un contexte de médicalisation de l’alimentation au début et milieu du XXe siècle ; 3) et enfin leur remise en question depuis la fin du XXe siècle, dans un contexte où les substituts au lait maternel se trouvent au centre de crises sanitaires, et où l’industrialisation de l’alimentation au sens large se voit critiquée. Abstract: Resume Dans le prolongement des debats qui ont abouti a la promulgation de la Loi Lurel en 2013, notre etude evalue la qualite nutritionnelle des produits apprehendee a travers leur teneur en sucre, pour une large partie de l’offre alimentaire disponible dans les Antilles, et compare cette offre avec celle correspondante dans l’Hexagone. L’analyse se focalise sur trois secteurs de produits - les boissons sucrees, les produits laitiers frais, les biscuits et gâteaux - qui sont les plus gros contributeurs aux apports en sucres des populations en Martinique et Guadeloupe. D’une facon generale, pour les 3 secteurs etudies, l’offre de produits disponible aux Antilles ne se demarque pas de facon tres importante de celle observee sur le marche hexagonal. En moyenne les teneurs en sucres sont comparables, tant pour le secteur des boissons sucrees (5 % d’ecart en moyenne) que pour celui des biscuits et gâteaux. Le secteur des produits laitiers frais se demarque plus fortement avec une teneur moyenne en sucres superieure de 15 % a celle de l’hexagone. Il faut neanmoins noter que, pour quelques familles de produits qui peuvent etre largement consommees, les ecarts de teneur en sucres sont susceptibles d’avoir des impacts sur les apports en sucres des consommateurs. Boissons aux fruits gazeuses et plates, limonades, cremes dessert, fromages frais et yaourts sucres, qui representent des familles de produits avec de grands nombres de references disponibles (suggerant de hauts niveaux de consommation), presentent ainsi des teneurs en sucres plus elevees aux Antilles qu’en France hexagonale. Si ces differences apparaissent clairement et ne doivent pas etre sous-estimees, les resultats conduisent a nuancer l’idee que la qualite de l’offre disponible aux Antilles serait le determinant majeur des apports en sucre plus eleves que dans l’hexagone. En tout etat de cause, l’effet lie aux quantites consommees est au moins aussi important que celui lie aux differences de teneur en sucres observees.

Abstract: International audience; Sorghum currently contributes to the species portfolio that is supporting bioenergy production including anaerobic digestion. Although agro-morphological ideotypes maximizing biogas production have been recently proposed, there is a crucial need to refine our understanding of the impacts of the stem composition and structure on this processing trait in order to ensure genetic gains in the mid to long terms. This study aims to assess the potential of Sorghum bicolor ssp bicolor stem genetic diversity to maximize genetic gains for biogas production and define a biogas stem ideotype. In this context, a panel of 57 genotypes, encompassing most of the stem composition variability available in cultivated sorghum, was characterized over five sites. Simultaneous histological and biochemical characterizations were performed. A high broad sense heritability associated with a moderate genetic variability was detected for stem biogas potential ensuring significant genetic gains in the future. In addition, the development of a stem histological phenotyping pipeline made it possible to describe the genetic diversity available for the internode anatomy and the repartition of key cell wall components. Consistently with previous studies, moderate to high heritability was observed for stem biochemical components. Genetic correlation, hierarchical clustering, and multiple stepwise regression analyses identified soluble sugar content as the first main driver of biogas potential genetic variability. Nevertheless, breeding programs should anticipate that biogas yield improvement will also rely on the monitoring of the cell wall components and their distribution in the stem jointly with the soluble sugar content. According to the assets of sorghum in terms of adaptation to environmental stresses and the present results regarding the identification of stem ideotypes suitable for different value chains, this species will surely play a key role to optimize the economic and environmental sustainability of the agrosystems that are currently facing the effects of climate change.

Abstract: International audience; PurposeTo investigate the emergence and specificities of local-led innovation platforms (IPs) in Madagascar and contrast them with neighbouring research-led IPs.Design/methodology/approachWe developed a multi-disciplinary framework combining insights from the literature on IP, innovation support services, and innovative networks. Using an exploratory multiple case study approach, we used this framework to analyse eight IPs in Madagascar.Findings(i) local-led IPs are problem oriented, (ii) there is a gap between the stated objectives of the IPs and their activities, (iii) their significant shortcomings result from weak or lacking inter-organisational management practices.Practical ImplicationsWe propose concrete avenues for strengthening local-led IPs by building their capacity to innovate at the individual, organisational and network levels.Theoretical ImplicationsWe contribute to refining IP assessment methods with an operational framework based on a small subset of variables, focusing on activities, shortcomings, and inter-organisational management practices. We also call for further research into innovation network capacities.Originality/ValueOur study sheds light on less documented local-led IPs. From a critical point of view, it shows that, despite the interest they attract among donors, local-led IPs suffer from specific weaknesses and require substantial support, especially when they operate in weak enabling environments.

Abstract: The familial structure of a population and the relatedness of its individuals are determined by its demography. There is, however, no general method to infer kinship directly from the life-cycle of a structured population. Yet this question is central to fields such as ecology, evolution and conservation, especially in contexts where there is a strong interdependence between familial structure and population dynamics. Here, we give a general formula to compute, from any matrix population model, the expected number of arbitrary kin (sisters, nieces, cousins, etc) of a focal individual ego, structured by the class of ego and of its kin. Central to our approach are classic but little-used tools known as genealogical matrices. Our method can be used to obtain both individual-based and population-wide metrics of kinship, as we illustrate. It also makes it possible to analyze the sensitivity of the kinship structure to the traits implemented in the model.

Abstract: Secondary root emergence is a crucial trait that shapes the plant’s underground system. Virtually every developmental step of root primordium morphogenesis is controlled by auxin. However, how the hormone controls cell separation in primordium-overlaying tissues through wall loosening is poorly understood. Here, we took advantage of white lupin and its spectacular cluster root development to assess the contribution of auxin to this process. We show that auxin’s positive role on rootlet emergence is associated with an upregulation of cell wall pectin modifying and degrading genes. Downregulation of a pectinolytic enzyme gene expressed in cells surrounding the primordium resulted in delayed emergence. Pectins were demethylesterified in the emergence zone and auxin treatment further enhanced this effect. Additionally, we report specific rhamnogalacturonan-I modifications during cortical cell separation. In conclusion, we propose a model in which auxin has a dual role during rootlet emergence: Firstly, through active pectin demethylesterification and secondly by regulating the expression of cell wall remodeling enzymes.

Abstract: International audience; Drip irrigation is one of the most efficient irrigation techniques, but it is susceptible to dripper clogging. This study proposes a novel and non-destructive method based on visible and near infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometric methods for the discrimination and thickness estimation of physical and chemical fouling in drip-irrigation systems. Four representative materials linked to physical and chemical clogging (kaolin, bentonite, sand and calcium carbonate) at different thicknesses were selected to illustrate the potential of the approach. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) and its modification partial least squares with discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were selected for the modelling of clogging materials. The PLS-DA model was able to predict with 96.97% accuracy all classes of materials. The PLSR models were able to estimate fouling thickness with relative prediction errors comprised between 134 μm and 164 μm. This difference appears mainly to be due to the physical properties of the selected materials. This prediction accuracy enabled the estimation of the clogging thickness between 10 and 21% of dripper channel coverage depending on the dripper channel section and the material under study. The proposed method offers an appropriate approach for clogging studies in drip irrigation systems that could be transferred to field applications.

Abstract: In Cognac, the musts are rich in grape solids and fermentations are usually run with turbidities ranging between 500 and 1500 NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit). These conditions, considered favourable for generating the desired organoleptic profiles of the final Eaux-de-vies, are unusual in winemaking, and, consequently, their impact on yeast metabolism is poorly understood. This study aims to better describe and understand the synthesis of fermentative aromas in such lipid-excess conditions, while integrating the effect of two other very important parameters: the initial concentration of assimilable nitrogen and the temperature of fermentation. To reach this objective, a Box-Behnken design was implemented to describe and model the simple effects of these factors as well as their interactions. Although the lipid concentration was very high, impacts on the production of fermentative aromas were observed. Indeed, high lipid levels promoted the synthesis of higher alcohols. Observing this effect was surprising because there is no metabolic connection between the anabolic pathways of production of these alcohols and the lipid pathway. This effect may be partly explained by impairment in the activity of alcohol acetyl transferases in the presence of lipids, which catalyse the conversion of higher alcohols into the corresponding esters. Therefore, in this study, the negative impact of turbidity was very significant on acetate esters related to the production of acetyl-CoA, which was the main molecule disturbed by the strong presence of lipids. Finally, and more surprisingly, lipid intake did not impact the synthesis of ethyl esters, which depended on the concentration of exogenous lipids. KEY POINTS: • Innovative work on the fermentation of white wine musts with very high lipid contents. • Precise fermentation management and monitoring in Cognac-making conditions. • Experimental design to study the impact of lipids, assimilable nitrogen and temperature on fermentative aroma synthesis.

Abstract: International audience; The intense hurricane season of 2017 in the North Atlantic brought a number of major hurricanes including Hurricane Irma (cat. 5), which landed on the French islands of St. Martin and St. Barthélemy. These two French Overseas Collectivities, separated by a distance of some 20 kilometres, have very different territorial and social characteristics. The study reported in this article is part of a scientific feedback conducted a few weeks after Irma. The social approach to the disaster conducted within this research framework aims to characterise the behaviour and implications of the inhabitants in the experience of the event, placed in a social and territorial context thanks to narrative interviews administered in situ. The comparative approach reveals similar behaviour before and during the hurricane, but individual and collective social and territorial factors guided very distinct post-event reactions.; A intensa temporada de furacões de 2017 no Atlântico Norte incluiu uma série de furacões importantes, como o FuracãoIrma (cat. 5), que afetou as ilhas francesas de São Martinho e São Bartolomeu. Abstract: International audience; In this article we seek to gain a better understanding of the decline in interest rates observed over the long term and we ask whether this trend is likely to stop or even reverse as a result of the covid crisis. For this, we introduce a model that combines an intertemporal framework and a price adjustment process. This model makes it possible to derive a testable relationship between observable macroeconomic variables.Tests carried out on a panel of 19 OECD countries confirm the influence of factors suggested by the theoretical model, in particular, the link between the fall in the interest rate and the economic slowdown. The covid episode is analyzed as a mixed shock of supply and demand. The exit from the covid crisis could be accompanied by a rebound, but rising real interest rates are not the most likely scenario.; Dans cet article on cherche à parvenir à une meilleure compréhension de la baisse des taux d’intérêt observée sur longue période et on se demande si cette tendance risque de s’interrompre voire de s’inverser à la suite de la crise du covid. Pour cela on introduit un modèle qui combine un cadre intertemporel et un processus d’ajustement des prix. Ce modèle permet de parvenir à une relation testable entre variables macroéconomiques observables. Les tests effectués sur un panel de 19 pays de l’OCDE confirment l’influence des facteurs suggérés par le modèle théorique, en particulier, le lien entre la baisse du taux d’intérêt et le ralentissement économique. L’épisode du covid est analysé comme un choc mixte d’offre et de demande. La sortie du covid pourrait s’accompagner d’un rebond mais la remontée des taux d’intérêt réels n’estpas le scénario le plus probable.

Abstract: Cacopsylla pruniisa psyllid that has been known since 1998 as the vector of the bacterium ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum’, responsible for the European stone fruit yellows (ESFY), a disease that affects species of Prunus. This disease is one of the major limiting factors for the production of stone fruits, most notably apricot (Prunus armeniaca) and Japanese plum (P. salicina), in all EU stone fruit-growing areas. The psyllid vector is widespread in the Western Palearctic, and evidence for the presence of the phytoplasma that it transmits to species of Prunus has been found in 15 of the 27 EU countries. Recent studies showed that C. pruni is actually composed of two cryptic species, which can be differentiated bymolecular markers. A literature review on the distribution of C. pruni was published in 2012, but it only provided presence or absence information at the country level and without distinction between the two cryptic species. Since 2012, numerous new records of the vector in several European countries have been published. We ourselves have acquired a large amountof data from sampling in France and other European countries. We have also carried out a thorough systematic literature review to find additional records, including all the original sources mentioningC. pruni (or its synonyms) since the first description by Scopoli in 1763. Our aim was to create an exhaustive georeferenced occurrence catalog, in particular in countries that are occasionnaly mentioned in the literature with little detail. Finally, for countries that seem suitable for the proliferation of C. pruni (USA, Canada, Japan, China, etc.), we digged deeper into the literature and reliablesources (e.g. checklist)to better subtanciateits current absence from those regions. Information on the distribution ranges of these vector psyllids is of crucial interest in order to best predict the vulnerability of stone fruit producing countries to the ESFY threat in the foreseeable future. We give free access to a unique file of 1975 records of all occurrence data in our possession concerning C. pruni, which we have gathered through more than twenty years of sampling efforts in Europe or through intensive text mining. We have made every effort to retrieve the source information for the records extracted from litterature (1201 records). Thus, we always give the title of the original reference, together with the page(s) citing C. pruni and, if possible, the year of sampling. To makethe results of this survey publicly available, we give a URL to access the literature sources. In most cases, this link allows to freely download a PDFfile. We also give access to information extracted from GBIF (162 exploitable data points on 245 occurrences found in the database), which we thoroughly checked and often supplemented to make the information more easily exploitable. We give access to our own unpublished georeferenced and genotyped record from 612samples taken over the last 20 years in several European countries (Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, etc.). Theseinclude two countries (Portugal and North Macedonia) for which the presence of C. pruni had notbeen reported before.Asour specimens have been genotyped (74 sites with species A solely, 202 with species B solely, and 310 with species A+B), our new data enable a better view of the geographical distribution of the two species at the Palaearctic scale.

Abstract: This paper describes an empiric study of aggregation and deliberation used during citizens' workshops for the preference elicitation of 20 different ecosystem services (ESs) delivered by the Palavas coastal lagoons located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea close to Montpellier (S. France). The impact of deliberation for the preference elicitation of 20 different ecosystem services (ESs) was studied by gathering and aggregating individual preferences before deliberation that were compared to the collective aggregation after deliberation. The same aggregation rules were used before and after deliberation and we compared two different aggregation methods, i.e. Rapid Ecosystem Services Participatory Appraisal (RESPA) and Majority Judgement (MJ). RESPA had been specifically tested for ESs, while MJ evaluates the merit of each item, an ES in our case, in a predefined ordinal scale of judgment. The impact of deliberation was strongest for the RESPA method. This new information acquired from application of social choice theory is particularly useful for ecological economics studying ES, and more practically for the development of deliberative approaches for public policies.

Abstract: In semi-arid savannas, the availability of surface water constrains movements and space-use of wild animals. To accurately model their movements in relation to water selection at a landscape scale, innovative methods have to be developed to i) better discriminate water bodies in space while characterizing their seasonal occurrences and ii) integrate this information in a spatially-explicit model to simulate animal movements according to surface water availability. In this study, we propose to combine satellite remote sensing (SRS) and spatial modelling in the case of the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer) movements at the periphery of Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe).An existing classification method of satellite Sentinel-2 time-series images has been adapted to produce monthly surface water maps at 10 meters spatial resolution. The resulting water maps have then been integrated into a spatialized mechanistic movement model based on a collective motion of self-propelled individuals to simulate buffalo movements in response to surface water.The use of spectral indices derived from Sentinel-2 in combination with the short-wave infrared (SWIR) band in a Random Forest (RF) classifier provided robust results with a mean Kappa index, over the time series, of 0.87 (max = 0.98, min = 0.65). The results highlighted strong space and time variabilities of water availability in the study area. The mechanistic movement model showed a positive and significant correlation between observations/simulations movements and space-use of buffalo’s herds (Spearman r = 0.69, p-value -114) despite overestimating the presence of buffalo individuals at proximity of the surface water.

Abstract: International audience; The paper presents one of the first economic analyses of residents’ choice of different coastal erosion control measures in a developing country - Vietnam. Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was selected given the frequency of coastal erosion events which have caused increasing damages to property, tourism activities and the livelihood of local people in an iconic tourist destination. We designed a discrete choice experiment based on responses from 399 households in order to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) for differing coastal erosion control measures. Using the generalized multinomial logit model, empirical results yield five important findings. First, residents prefer wider, more public beaches having both trees and restaurants and are willing to accept visible structures such as groynes and stair revetment to prevent further erosion. Second, residents place a higher value on a beach that is protected by robust permanent structures. In particular, residents have the highest WTP for groynes. Third, there exists preference and scale heterogeneity across respondents which are driven by level of education, knowledge of the problem, and the stated level of choice certainty. Fourth, knowledge and experience of coastal erosion are shown to have a strong influence on the valuation residents place on the choice of protective structures. Finally, on average, a resident is willing to pay USD 1.7 per year for a coastal erosion management program that increases beach width by additional 50 meters, beach access by additional 25%, restaurants and trees on the beach and groynes as the erosion protection structure.

Abstract: The Moroccan agricultural sector employs around 40% of the country's total working population. Since the early 1990s, there has been a striking increase in the proportion of female wage laborers. This article investigates the effect of the gendered composition of the agricultural wage labor force on horticultural farms. We draw on an original data set collected in 2010, comprising 240 agricultural holdings located in the region of Souss Massa. The results suggest that local labor shortages do not play a major role in explaining the ratio of female hired wage laborers. Instead, it seems that quality requirements are encouraging farm holdings to hire a female labor force. [EconLit citations: Q12, O13, J43]

Abstract: International audience; Many insects metamorphose from antagonistic larvae into mutualistic adult pollinators, with reciprocal adaptation leading to specialized insect-plant associations. It remains unknown how such interactions are established at molecular level. Here we assemble high-quality genomes of a fig species, Ficus pumila var. pumila, and its specific pollinating wasp, Wiebesia pumilae. We combine multi-omics with validation experiments to reveal molecular mechanisms underlying this specialized interaction. In the plant, we identify the specific compound attracting pollinators and validate the function of several key genes regulating its biosynthesis. In the pollinator, we find a highly reduced number of odorant-binding protein genes and an odorant-binding protein mainly binding the attractant. During antagonistic interaction, we find similar chemical profiles and turnovers throughout the development of galled ovules and seeds, and a significant contraction of detoxification-related gene families in the pollinator. Our study identifies some key genes bridging coevolved mutualists, establishing expectations for more diffuse insect-pollinator systems.

Abstract: Plusieurs controverses jalonnent les recherches antérieures sur l’exportation des PME. L’objet de notre travail est d’analyser les facteurs de succès et les risques d’échec à l’international de ces entreprises. Pour cela, nous avons mené une analyse empirique sur dix cas d’entreprises vitivinicoles françaises. Nos résultats montrent une forte diversité des trajectoires à l’export et des visions distinctes du succès et de l’échec à l’international. Trois stratégies non exclusives (partenariale, communication, ressources humaines) se dessinent. Loin d’être un handicap, la petite taille des entreprises vitivinicoles peut se traduire par des attributs compétitifs distinctifs (lien au terroir, spécialisation, image-histoire du producteur)., Several issues punctuate previous research on SMEs export, and more specifically about liability of smallness. Our work aims to analyze the success factors and risks of international failure of these companies. We conducted an empirical analysis on ten cases of French wine companies. Our results show a strong diversity of export trajectories and distinct visions of success and failure of international strategies. Three non-exclusive strategies (partnership, communication, human resources) are emerging. Far from being a liability, the small size of wine-producing companies can be translated into distinctive competitive attributes (link to the terroir, specialization, image-history of the producer)., Varias controversias puntúan investigaciones anteriores sobre la exportación de PYME. El propósito de nuestro trabajo es analizar los factores de éxito y los riesgos de fracaso internacional de estas empresas. Realizamos un análisis empírico de diez casos de empresas vitivinícolas francesas. Nuestros resultados muestran una gran diversidad de trayectorias de exportación y visiones distintas de éxito y fracaso internacional. Se pueden distinguir tres estrategias no exclusivas (asociación, comunicación, recursos humanos). Lejos de ser una desventaja, el pequeño tamaño de las empresas productoras de vino puede traducirse en atributos competitivos distintivos (vínculo con el terruño, especialización, historia de la imagen del productor).

Abstract: International audience; India is the world's largest producer of milk for over 20 years. This production mainly responds to growing domestic demand, and relies almost entirely on millions of small herds (3 female buffaloes or cows) fed with local crop residues. This paper aims to assess the socio-economic and environmental sustainability of this dairy development model by implementing different approaches at various geographical scales. To assess such a model is complex. On the one hand, the recycling of biomass for livestock feed is mainly practiced by the poorest farmers, who have a limited access to land, markets and other resources. It sustains their employment and livelihoods, but also their food security since theyconsume part of their milk production. On the other hand, the intensive use of subsidized mineral fertilizers and energy for irrigation to produce crop grains and residues leads to high fossil energy uses and greenhouse gas emissions per litre of milk, calling into question the model's environmental sustainability. Our results need to be explored further by (i) investigating more case studies to develop a larger picture of the diversity of the Indian dairy sector, and (ii) integrating the different approaches and levels within a larger framework.

Abstract: International audience; Agricultural entrepreneurship is an emerging field. It involves analyzing and understanding the strategies of agricultural entrepreneurs, particularly in response to the institutional changes and economic and technological disruptions to which the agricultural industry is subject. Despite the increase in the number and diversity of publications, there is a need for a better understanding of agricultural entrepreneurship dynamics from the entrepreneurial theory viewpoint (beyond rural sociology and agricultural economics). A literature review identifies the main themes hitherto dealt with, as well as avenues for future research. This special issue partly responds to the need to investigate the entrepreneurial process in agriculture, whether in the development of collective projects, understanding entrepreneurial action, the effects of the business environment on entrepreneurial orientation, or the question of gender and rural development policies.

Abstract: Despite the importance of yam ( Dioscorea spp.) tuber quality traits, and more precisely texture attributes, high-throughput screening methods for varietal selection are still lacking. This study sets out to define the profile of good quality pounded yam and provide screening tools based on predictive models using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Seventy-four out of 216 studied samples proved to be moldable, i.e. suitable for pounded yam. While samples with low dry matter (4%) and high protein (>6%) contents, low hardness (0.5) and high cohesiveness (>0.5) grouped mostly non-moldable genotypes, the opposite was not true. This outline definition of a desirable chemotype may allow breeders to choose screening thresholds to support their choice. Abstract: International audience; This study analyzes the perceptions of individuals on retrospective rail punctuality indicators to determine the most useful indicator according to socio-demographic characteristics, regular trip behavior variables, and railways transportation habits variables. In choice situations, individuals must choose between four punctuality indicators and an out option. Common punctuality indicators have been selected among those proposed by the authority for quality of service in transport, as well as a new punctuality indicator from the financial literature: Delay-at-Risk. Thus, via an online survey and econometric modeling, we show that respondents appreciate the usefulness of punctuality indicators for planning their long-distance rail trips. The usefulness is reinforced by the fact that respondents employ several modes for regular trips and frequent train users. Moreover, they have already experienced missed appointments or connections. The risk attitude and prudence of respondents also play an important role but not totally in the expected direction. Lastly, Delay-at-Risk, although unknown and more complex in its formulation, exhibits some characteristics that are appreciated by users..

Abstract: By capturing various patterns of the structuring of genetic variation across populations, f -statistics have proved highly effective for the inference of demographic history. Such statistics are defined as covariance of SNP allele frequency differences among sets of populations without requiring haplotype information and are hence particularly relevant for the analysis of pooled sequencing (Pool-Seq) data. We here propose a reinterpretation of the F (and D) parameters in terms of probability of gene identity and derive from this unified definition unbiased estimators for both Pool-Seq and standard allele count data obtained from individual genotypes. We implemented these estimators in a new version of the R package poolfstat, which now includes a wide range of inference methods: (i) three-population test of admixture; (ii) four-population test of treeness; (iii) F4-ratio estimation of admixture rates; and (iv) fitting, visualization and (semi-automatic) construction of admixture graphs. A comprehensive evaluation of the methods implemented in poolfstat on both simulated Pool-Seq (with various sequencing coverages and error rates) and allele count data confirmed the accuracy of these approaches, even for the most cost-effective Pool-Seq design involving low sequencing coverages. We further analyzed a real Pool-Seq data made of 14 populations of the invasive species Drosophila suzukii which allowed refining both the demographic history of native populations and the invasion routes followed by this emblematic pest. Our new package poolfstat provides the community with a user-friendly and efficient all-in-one tool to unravel complex population genetic histories from large-size Pool-Seq or allele count SNP data.

Abstract: International audience; Measuring changes in total factor productivity (TFP) is critical for decision-making, especially through the improvement of structural change and competitiveness. In the context of fishing industry, productivity change results from many factors, such as regulations and stock conditions. Understanding changes in productivity and factors affecting those changes are essential to not only fishery management, but also sustainable fishing industry. This paper applies the Färe-Primont index to the assessment of productivity change of oceanic tuna fisheries in Vietnam from 2007 to 2019. The results show that oceanic tuna fisheries in Vietnam have been inefficient and need to further improve its mix and scale efficiencies. The study provides implications for policies to improve economic efficiency of oceanic tuna fisheries in Vietnam, aiming toward sustainable development.

Abstract: International audience; Agroecology has been a focus of intense debate in France since 2012, when the idea was explicitly adopted as a national policy objective by the Ministry of Agriculture. This article intervenes in this debate by documenting and describing an under-recognized, “silent” agroecology practiced by conventional farmers contending with a variety of threats—economic, technical, and climatic—to their farming systems. Inspired by the sociology of development, the research summarized here shows how these farmers have relied on peer-to-peer cooperation, and specifically on formal equipment-sharing arrangements, to develop a range of practices allowing for the ecological improvement of their farming systems. These farmers make few claims with regard to the environmental benefits of their innovations, however: instead, they emphasize their desire for improved farm autonomy. Out of respect for the social and professional dynamics within which they operate, moreover, these farmers tend to avoid ecological terms and topics in their peer-to-peer conversations. This “silence” is reinforced by the statistical tools used to report on French agriculture, which make little note of such farmers’ activities, effectively excluding these practices from assessments of the ecologization of French agriculture. Finally, given the challenges these farmers face in locating necessary resources elsewhere in the agrifood sector (suppliers, research and development, markets), the ecological benefits of these new practices are not always fully realized. Nevertheless, the scale and significance of this silent agroecology-the conditions for which are also present in other Western countries—suggest an urgent need to reorient public policy frameworks to better support the agroecological transition.

Abstract: Super-resolution microscopy techniques have pushed the limit of optical imaging to unprecedented spatial resolutions. However, one of the frontiers in nanoscopy is its application to intact living organisms. Here we describe the implementation and application of super-resolution single-particle tracking photoactivated localization microscopy (sptPALM) to probe single-molecule dynamics of membrane proteins in live roots of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. We first discuss the advantages and limitations of sptPALM for studying the diffusion properties of membrane proteins and compare this to fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). We describe the technical details for handling and imaging the samples for sptPALM, with a particular emphasis on the specificity of imaging plant cells, such as their thick cell walls or high degree of autofluorescence. We then provide a practical guide from data collection to image analyses. In particular, we introduce our sptPALM_viewer software and describe how to install and use it for analyzing sptPALM experiments. Finally, we report an R statistical analysis pipeline to analyze and compare sptPALM experiments. Altogether, this protocol should enable plant researchers to perform sptPALM using a benchmarked reproducible protocol. Routinely, the procedure takes 3–4 h of imaging followed by 3–4 d of image processing and data analysis. This protocol describes how to perform single-particle tracking photoactivated localization microscopy (sptPALM) of membrane proteins in living plant tissues. The procedure covers all stages, from sample preparation to data analysis.

Abstract: International audience; The purpose of this work was to: (i) propose a methodology to infer local estimates of the available water capacity (AWC) at a plot from a few measurements in laboratory of AWC carried out on horizons of a pit on the same plot, (ii) examine the effect of measurement errors on spatial estimates of AWC and the associated uncertainties. For each horizon identified in the pit, the water content was determined at field capacity and at the permanent wilting point, and thus AWC. 47 soundings were carried out on a regular grid covering the plot. For each sounding, an AWC value was estimated by matching sounding horizons to the pit horizons. Laboratory measurements of AWC on 14 sites were used to validate the 47 local estimates. Statistics such as correlation coefficient, mean error and root mean square error are promising at 0.84, 4.0 mm and 17.5 mm, respectively. The spatialization of AWC was carried out by ordinary kriging, considering or ignoring the measurement errors on AWC. The precision of AWC estimates allowed making evident that accounting for measurement errors provided estimates that were more precise. This result, confirmed by the prediction interval coverage probability statistic, underlined that taking into account measurement errors in spatial modeling is an effective way to reduce the confidence interval of any estimate. These results suggest that it would be better to fix the nugget based on a preliminary test on the measurement error rather than to fix it based on the experimental variogram.

Abstract: International audience; Key message Bi-axis training increased vegetative shoot light interception and modeled photosynthetic rate, and reduced fruiting shoot mutual shading and vegetative growth by optimizing canopy structure compared to single-axis in young apple trees. Improving light interception and distribution within canopy are constant objectives of training through manipulating tree architecture. A bi-axis training system with two primary scaffolds has been proposed to improve flowering and dry matter production in apple trees. In this study, 'Fuji' apple trees trained using a bi-axis or single-axis training system were compared. Twelve three-dimensional (3D) virtual apple trees were reconstructed by combining 3D digitizing and allometric relationships for three shoot types (vegetative long shoot, VL; fruiting shoot, FS; vegetative short shoot, VS), to evaluate canopy structure impacts on light interception. Light interception efficiency was evaluated by silhouette to total area ratio (STAR). The potential canopy photosynthetic rate was evaluated by the eco-physiological RATP model. The leaf area of VL in bi-axis trained trees was approximately 40% lower than that in single-axis trees. Lower leaf area and more uniform spatial distribution were noted in VL in bi-axis than in single-axis trees. This led to more even spatial light distribution and more shoots having higher STAR in bi-axis than in single-axis trees, regardless of the whole tree or shoot type. In the virtual orchard, bi-axis trees had a 25% and 10% STAR increase in VS and VL, respectively, but a similar STAR for FS compared to single-axis trees. Mutual shading between neighboring trees in the virtual orchard made of bi-axis trees was significantly lower than that with single-axis trees for FS. The modeled canopy net photosynthetic rate was 26% higher in bi-axis than in single-axis trees. With the increase in tree age, the projected leaf area increased, but the porosity of the canopy decreased, and mutual shading increased for the whole canopy and all shoot types, irrespective of training systems. These results indicated that manipulating scaffolds in apple trees can regulate canopy structure, light interception, and vegetative growth during the early developmental stages.

Abstract: A crucial aspect of viticulture is finally unveiled as the historical dynamics of its agrobiodiversity are described in the Champagne region for the first time. Outline analyses were carried out to compare the morphology of archaeological grape seeds from Troyes and Reims (first c. AD to fifteenth c. AD) with that of a reference collection of modern seeds, including wild vines and traditional grape varieties, believed to be ancient and characteristic of the French vine heritage. This allows us to document the chronological dynamics of the use of the wild Vitis type and of the diversity of the varieties used, based on morphological disparity. After showing the existence of morphological types corresponding to geographical groups, we highlight a geochronological dynamic. Our results show that the wild type is used throughout the series, up to the Middle Ages. In addition, domestic forms, morphologically related to southern varietal groups, are very early involved in the Champagne grape agrodiversity. The groups corresponding to the typical grape varieties of today do not appear until the second millennium. These previously unsuspected dynamics are discussed in light of the social, societal and climatic changes documented for the period.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we consider a mathematical model of syntrophic relationship between two microbial species of the anaerobic digestion process including mortality (or decay) terms. We focus on the acetogenesis and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis phases. Our study gives a quite comprehensive analysis of a syntrophic model by analyzing the joined effects of syntrophy relationship, mortality, substrate inhibition and input concentrations that were neglected in previous studies. Using a general class of growth rates, the necessary and sufficient conditions of existence and local stability of all steady states of the four-dimensional system are determined according to the operating parameters. This general model exhibits a rich behavior with the coexistence of two microbial species, the bi-stability, the multiplicity of coexistence steady states, and the existence of two steady states of extinction of the first species. The operating diagram shows how the model behaves by varying the control parameters and illustrates the effect of the inhibition and the new input substrate concentration (hydrogen) on the reduction of the coexistence region and the emergence of a bi-stability region. Similarly to the classical chemostat model, including the substrate inhibition can destabilize a two-tiered microbial 'food chain' where the stability depends on the initial condition.

Abstract: International audience; Blast disease is a notorious fungal disease leading to dramatic yield losses on major food crops such as rice and wheat. The causal agent, Pyricularia oryzae, encompasses different lineages, each having a different host range. Host shifts are suspected to have occurred in this species from Setaria spp. to rice and from Lolium spp. to wheat. The emergence of blast disease on maize in Iran was observed for the first time in the north of the country in 2012. We later identified blast disease in two additional regions of Iran: Gilan in 2013 and Golestan in 2016. Epidemics on the weed barnyard grass (Echinochloa spp.) were also observed in the same maize fields. Here, we showed that P. oryzae is the causal agent of this disease on both hosts. Pathogenicity assays in the greenhouse revealed that strains from maize can infect barnyard grass and conversely. However, genotyping with simple sequence repeat markers and comparative genomics showed that strains causing field epidemics on maize and on barnyard grass are different, although they belong to the same previously undescribed clade of P. oryzae. Phylogenetic analyses including these strains and a maize strain collected in Gabon in 1985 revealed two independent host-range expansion events from barnyard grass to maize. Comparative genomics between maize and barnyard grass strains revealed the presence or absence of five candidate genes associated with host specificity on maize, with the deletion of a small genomic region possibly responsible for adaptation to maize. This recent emergence of P. oryzae on maize provides a case study to understand host range expansion. Epidemics on maize raise concerns about potential yield losses on this crop in Iran and potential geographic expansion of the disease.

Abstract: International audience; Iron (Fe) is a major micronutrient and is required for plant growth and development. Nongrass species have evolved a reduction-based strategy to solubilize and take up Fe. The secretion of Fe-mobilizing coumarins (e.g. fraxetin, esculetin and sideretin) by plant roots plays an important role in this process. Although the biochemical mechanisms leading to their biosynthesis have been well described, very little is known about their cellular and subcellular localization or their mobility within plant tissues. Spectral imaging was used to monitor, in Arabidopsis thaliana, the in planta localization of Fe-mobilizing coumarins and scopolin. Molecular, genetic and biochemical approaches were also used to investigate the dynamics of coumarin accumulation in roots. These approaches showed that root hairs play a major role in scopoletin secretion, whereas fraxetin and esculetin secretion occurs through all epidermis cells. The findings of this study also showed that the transport of coumarins from the cortex to the rhizosphere relies on the PDR9 transporter under Fe-deficient conditions. Additional experiments support the idea that coumarins move throughout the plant body via the xylem sap and that several plant species can take up coumarins present in the surrounding media. Altogether, the data presented here demonstrate that coumarin storage and accumulation in roots is a highly complex and dynamic process.

Abstract: International audience; Various benefits (e.g. tracking of resources and of climate niche) and costs (e.g. distance travelled) are hypothesized to drive seasonal animal migrations. Until now, these potential factors have been investigated together at the species level, but migratory movements are made at the individual level, leading to intraspecific variability. Here, we use ringing/recovery data from 1308 individuals belonging to thirteen North American bird species to analyse patterns in intraspecific variability of migratory destinations in order to investigate which factors underpin bird migration and how individuals trade‐off among multiple factors. Our results suggest that migratory destinations have been shaped by access to resources (most important during the breeding season) and climatic niche tracking (during winter, mostly). However, the benefits of resource surpluses and climate niche tracking appear to be traded off against the cost of migratory distance, which seems to strongly constrain where individuals migrate.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine how crop insurance influences pesticide use, the two decisions being strategic for risk management at the farm scale. To that aim, the paper implements propensity score matching, difference-in-differences models, and a combination of these two methods in order to compare two similar populations of insured and non-insured farmers. Using data from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN), we consider French farms which cultivate field crops and quality wine-growing, the two main productions that participate the most to crop insurance and that use intensively pesticides. The analysis is performed between 2008 and 2012 given a strategic change in the crop insurance system in 2010 that strongly incites farmers to purchase crop insurance with private companies. At the same time, pesticide use was progressively discouraged through public policies. Estimations show that while pesticide use decreases for all crops, the purchase of crop insurance policies has no impact for field crops and quality wine-growing. Meanwhile, the land allocated to each crop within the farm changes. These results question a possible substitutability, for some productions, between crop insurance and pesticides as risk management tools.

Abstract: International audience; The new challenges of universities in a regional entrepreneurial ecosystemThe University is emerging as a key contributor to the entrepreneurial ecosystem, on the one hand as a result of pressure exerted through public policies to change their status and injunctions to introduce entrepreneurship into the academic programs available to students. On the other hand, due to the need for University to become more involved in regional dynamics with a view to boosting the employability of its graduates.This article examines the ways in which proximities can be managed by universities in order to establish their role as mediators between the academic sphere and the actors involved in the regional economic development. What can be done to facilitate greater proximity and interaction between universities, research laboratories and support structures in order to generate value for their local area ?The results of a qualitative study among the actors of the entrepreneurial accompaniment in Languedoc Roussillon show that the involvement of universities in in creating an organized proximity is a key expectation among stakeholders in the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, who face a lack of institutional proximity, or even limited geographical proximity to university resources. The creation of organized proximity requires then cooperation and partnerships which are today far from being the norm.; L’Université émerge comme un acteur clé de l’écosystème entrepreneurial, d’une part sous la pression des politiques publiques à travers le changement de son statut et des injonctions à introduire l’entrepreneuriat dans les programmes de formation des étudiants. D’autre part, elle est tenue de s’impliquer davantage dans les dynamiques territoriales pour favoriser l’insertion professionnelle de ses lauréats.Cet article interroge les modes de gestion des proximités que les universités peuvent instaurer pour asseoir leur rôle de médiation entre le milieu académique et les acteurs du développement économique du territoire. Comment faciliter les proximités et les interfaces entre les universités et les laboratoires de recherche, et les structures d’accompagnement pour créer de la valeur pour un territoire ?Les résultats d’une étude qualitative auprès des acteurs de l’accompagnement entrepreneurial en Languedoc Roussillon montrent que l’implication des universités dans la construction d’une proximité organisée est une attente forte des parties prenantes de l’écosystème entrepreneurial territorial, qui sont confrontées à un déficit de proximité institutionnelle, voire à une faible proximité géographique avec les ressources universitaires. La construction d’une proximité organisée suppose alors des coopérations et des partenariats qui sont aujourd’hui loin de constituer la règle.

Abstract: Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the main actor of wine fermentation but at present, still little is known about the factors impacting its distribution in the vineyards. In this study, 23 vineyards and 7 cellars were sampled over 2 consecutive years in the Bordeaux and Bergerac regions. The impact of geography and farming system and the relation between grape and vat populations were evaluated using a collection of 1374 S. cerevisiae merlot grape isolates and 289 vat isolates analyzed at 17 microsatellites loci. A very high genetic diversity of S. cerevisiae strains was obtained from grape samples, higher in conventional farming system than in organic one. The geographic appellation and the wine estate significantly impact the S. cerevisiae population structure, whereas the type of farming system has a weak global effect. When comparing cellar and vineyard populations, we evidenced the tight connection between the two compartments, based on the high proportion of grape isolates (25%) related to the commercial starters used in the cellar and on the estimation of bidirectional geneflows between the vineyard and the cellar compartments. Vineyards and wineries are ecological habitats that house a community of molds, yeasts and bacteria 1. The yeast species present on the grape berry are related to a fruit microflora (including mainly Hanseniaspora sp., Aureobasidium pullulans, Pichia sp., Metschnikowia pulcherima, Torulaspora delbrueckii, Starmerella bacillaris 2,3. By contrast, the yeast community in the cellar changes drastically during fermentation with the gradual increase in ethanol and temperature 4,5 , as well as with the use of sulfites for wine making, leading to the domination of Saccharomyces sp. Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been associated with human fermentations since the dawn of the civilization 6,7 ; its diversity is shaped by human activities, especially by winemaking 8-10. Because of the key role of S. cerevisiae in wine production, its genetic diversity has been widely analyzed in the wake of the technological advances in the molecular tools designed to reveal yeast diversity. Since the first exploration of wine S. cerevisiae diversity with mtDNA restriction analysis 11 , many more studies have been performed using this technique 12-15. Almost simultaneously, the polymorphism of the karyotypes of wine yeast revealed by pulsed field electrophoresis has been used as an alternative technique 16-19. Later inter-delta analysis 20-24 and more recently microsatellite analysis 25-27 have been used. Several parameters that could impact the genetic diversity and population structure of wine S. cerevisiae have been investigated by different authors. Geographical distance has been the most widely studied environmental parameter, often covering large areas and comparing different regions in a given country. Many species are organized into a metapopulation (i.e., a group of local subpopulations that inhabit discrete habitat patches but interact through dispersal 28. Knight and Goddard 29 have shown that the diversity of regional S. cerevisiae metapopulations from vineyards were undergoing significant changes between distant areas. These authors have also shown differential migration of this species between regions that may be due in part to the human influence. At vineyard scale level, no spatial differentiation of the S. cerevisiae population isolated from spontaneous fermentation is evidenced 30. Over smaller distances, many vectors may favor the homogenization of diversity such as insects including wasps, bees and fruit flies 31-33 , or migratory birds 34. Abstract: Soil health is defined as the soil's capacity to deliver ecosystem functions within environmental constraints. On tree plantations, clear-cutting and land preparation between two crop cycles cause severe physical disturbances to the soil and seriously deplete soil organic carbon and biodiversity. Rubber, one of the main tropical perennial crops worldwide, has a plantation life cycle of 25 to 40 years, with successive replanting cycles on the same plot. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of clear-cutting disturbance on three soil functions (carbon transformation, nutrient cycling and structure maintenance) and their restoration after the planting of the new rubber crop, in two contrasting soil situations (Arenosol and Ferralsol) in Côte d'Ivoire. In this 18-month diachronic study, we intensively measured soil functions under different scenarios as regards the management of logging residues and the use or not of a legume cover crop. We investigated the relationship between soil macrofauna diversity and soil heath. At both sites, clear-cutting and land preparation disturbed carbon transformation and nutrient cycling significantly and, to a lesser extent, structure maintenance function. When logging residues were applied, carbon transformation and structure maintenance functions were fully restored within 12 to 18 months after disturbance. By contrast, no restoration of nutrient cycling was observed over the study period. A legume cover crop mainly improved the restoration of carbon transformation. We found a strong relationship (P ≤ 0.001; R2 = 0.62–0.66) between soil macrofauna diversity and soil health. Our overall results were very similar at the two sites, despite their contrasting soil conditions. Keeping logging residues in the plots and sowing a legume in the inter-row at replanting accelerated the restoration of soil functions after major disturbance caused by clear-cutting and land preparation. Our results confirm the necessity of taking soil macrofauna diversity into account in the management of tropical perennial crops.

Abstract: International audience; The electro-fermentation is a novel process that consists in coupling a microbial fermentative metabolism with an electrochemical system. In such a process the electrodes act either as electron sinks or sources modifying the fermentation balance of a microbial fermentative metabolism and provide new options for the control of microbial activity. A theoretical framework for the analysis and control of fermentations using electro-fermentation is currently lacking. In this paper, we propose a simple electro-fermentation model in which a population of fermentative bacteria switch between two metabolic behaviors in response to different electrode potentials. We then mathematically analyze optimal strategies to maximize the production of one of the rising products in a batch fermentation using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. The obtained results show that, in some experimental configurations, a dynamic control of the electrode potential is required for the maximization of the desired product. Consequences of the obtained optimal strategy for driving electro-fermentation experiments are discussed through a realistic example. This analysis also highlights that the transition rates between fermentation and electro-fermentation behaviors are currently unknown and would be crucial to quantify in order to apply such a control approach.

Abstract: International audience; In the context of studies on the effects of agricultural production diversity, there are debates in the scientific community as to the level of diversification appropriate for improving dietary diversity. In Tunisia, agriculture is a strategic sector for the economy and a critical pillar of its food sovereignty. Using instrumental variable methods to account for endogeneity, we have estimated the association between agricultural production diversity and women's dietary diversity among smallholder farming households in the Sidi Bouzid governorate (central Tunisia). Although we found a low level of agricultural production diversity and a fairly diversified diet among women, we observed a systematic weak positive association between five different indicators of agricultural production diversity and women's dietary diversity. We observed a stronger positive association between women's dietary diversity and women being more educated and households being wealthier. Neither diversity of food supplies in food markets nor market distance were associated with women's dietary diversity, whereas we observed a higher level of consumption of some products (dairy) when they were produced on the farm.

Abstract: International audience; Fresh pineapple juice exhibits a shelflife of a few days limited by the development of yeasts and molds. An approach was implemented to assess the efficacy of treatments of juice, based on three successive steps. The first step was to validate the use of a microbial cocktail which leads to juice spoilage. In a second step, the efficacy of treatments was assessed on the growth of fungi in two conditions. The treatment chosen was the addition of Thymus leptobotrys (Tl) and Thymus maroccanus (Tm) essential oils (EO). These extracts were mainly composed of the monoterpene carvacrol, and inhibited fungal growth in culture medium. The addition of EO to pasteurized juice inoculated with a fungal cocktail limited fungal population below 4.6 log CFU/mL during 14 days. The low pH of pineapple juice probably strengthened the effect of antifungal compounds acting on proton gradient across plasma membrane. Lastly, the efficacy of the treatments was assessed in fresh pineapple juice harboring its natural microbial population. The extracts TlEO at 0.25%o or TmEO at 0.05%o limited fungal growth below 5 log CFU/mL during 14 days. Thyme scent was detected after EO addition but the characteristic descriptors of pineapple and sugary were maintained.

Abstract: International audience; Since the establishment of REDD+, hundreds of projects have emerged around the globe. Much attention has been given to REDD+ projects in the literature, but the conditions under which they are likely to be effective are still not well known. In particular, the location bias concept states that projects are more likely to be implemented in remote areas, where development pressure is low, hence questioning the additionality of these projects. In this article, we examine this concept, assessing how the status of REDD+ project proponents and the project certification influence the choice of location and the project's additionality. Using a sample of six REDD+ projects in Brazil, we show that these two dimensions can impact location choice toward areas with higher or lower opportunity costs and that this choice can impact additionality. We also show that the selection of an area with low opportunity costs, which is frequently presented as a location bias, does not necessarily preclude additionality.

Abstract: International audience; Fruit quality traits are directly linked to consumer acceptability, and thus key targets for banana breeding programs. We explored the genetic control of three major organoleptic and ripening-related traits, namely pulp acidity (pH), firmness (PF) and dry matter content (DMC), over a 7-day ripening period and three production cycles in a banana segregating population genotyped by sequencing. Significant broad-sense heritabilities were estimated with 0.77, 0.46 and 0.81 values for pH, PF and DMC, respectively. QTL detection was first performed on the whole dataset to analyze their dynamics. In a second approach, per-cycle data were considered to evaluate the stability across production cycles. Finally, a meta-analysis was performed. Various QTLs were detected, as well as many QTL colocalizations, while 12 of these QTLs were more prominent as they were detected in several approaches and/or explained over 15.0% of the phenotypic variation. Candidate genes were proposed for 10 of these QTLs. The QTL with the largest contribution to pulp acidity (R-2 = 19.3-50.6%) was located on LG1_7 on the genetic map of Pisang Madu, i.e. a parent that is closely related to Cavendish, the world's most cultivated dessert banana cultivar group. This QTL is located on a chromosome derived from a reciprocal translocation that does not recombine in Pisang Madu, which is a favorable context for molecular marker monitoring. These first results will provide a relevant basis for marker-assisted selection in banana improvement programs.

Abstract: International audience; India's dairy sector has emerged as the world's largest dairy producer and has enabled 70 million farmers to generate income through its rapid growth. This success is linked to broad national policy support through the Operation Flood program and the emergence of an inclusive model of cooperatives. However, the informal sector is still the marketing channel most used by dairy producers, and with the liberalization of the dairy sector, the cooperative model is also facing competition from the private sector. By surveying 244 dairy farmers in two major but heterogeneous states in India, this paper examines the inclusiveness of the sector and the impact of dairy cooperative membership on farmers’ income and livelihood. The originality of the paper concerns its systematic perspective on households’ assets and activities. The results indicate that cooperative membership is associated with caste membership and farmers collection centers. Better incomes are associated with membership, particularly among farmers with less land and among smallholders, who are more dependent on their dairy income to lift themselves out of poverty.
