Abstract: International audience; Cet article analyse les transformations sociodémographiques des villes moyennes depuis 1968 et s'intéresse plus particulièrement au phénomène de déclin urbain qui concerne une partie d'entre elles. A partir des données des recensements de la population de 2007 et 2017, une classification des villes moyennes met en évidence les dynamiques contrastées qu'elles connaissent depuis les années 2000. La typologie ainsi obtenue est ensuite analysée au prisme des transformations sociodémographiques de 1968 à 2017 des différentes classes qui la composent. Nous montrons que le déclin urbain concerne prioritairement les villes moyennes situées dans le Centre et le Nord-Est de la France, caractérisées par une spécialisation ancienne dans la production industrielle. Nous analysons, ensuite, certaines conséquences de ces dynamiques contrastées. Si celles-ci procèdent initialement des différences de spécialisation productive, elles tendent de plus en plus à distinguer les villes selon le degré auquel leurs populations se paupérisent.

Abstract: International audience; Environmentally induced reductions in fitness components (survival, fecundity) are generally considered as passive, maladaptive responses to stress. However, there is also mounting evidence for active, programmed forms of environmentally induced cell death in unicellular organisms. While conceptual work has questioned how such programmed cell death (PCD) might be maintained by natural selection, few experimental studies have investigated how PCD influences genetic differences in longer-term fitness across environments. Here, we tracked the population dynamics of two closely related strains of the halotolerant microalga Dunaliella salina, following transfers across salinities. We showed that after a salinity rise, only one of these strains displayed a massive population decline (-69% in one hour), largely attenuated by exposure to a PCD inhibitor. However, this decline was followed by a rapid demographic rebound, characterized by faster growth than the non-declining strain, such that sharper decline was correlated with faster subsequent growth across experiments and conditions. Strikingly, the decline was more pronounced in conditions more favourable to growth (more light, more nutrients, less competition), further suggesting that it was not simply passive. We explored several hypotheses that could explain this decline-rebound pattern, which suggests that successive stresses could select for higher environmentally induced death in this system.

Abstract: International audience; Most insect herbivores are adapted to feed on a few host plants only, but the mechanisms underlying plant specialization are poorly understood. One of the dominant hypotheses is that insects inject an oral secretion into the plant that manipulates the plant's defences resulting in induced susceptibility. This hypothesis was tested on the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum), which forms multiple biotypes, each specialized on specific legume hosts. In particular, the hypothesis that a pea-adapted biotype can induce host susceptibility on pea and increase the fitness of a non-pea-adapted biotype was tested. Survival and fecundity of an alfalfa-adapted biotype on peas were enhanced by co-infestation but not by pre-infestation with a pea-adapted biotype. The electrical penetration graph (EPG) method was then used to dissect the components of the alfalfa biotype feeding behaviour on peas with and without co-infestation by the pea biotype. While probing time did not differ between these two conditions, differences were observed in most other EPG parameters. When co-infested with the pea-adapted biotype, the alfalfa-adapted biotype was more likely to establish a phloem feeding and exhibited a longer ingestion time on peas. Our results indicated that the pea-adapted biotype induced pea susceptibility by increasing the accessibility of non-pea-adapted aphids to the host phloem sap. As a result, the alfalfa biotype increased its survival and fecundity. These results contribute to understanding how aphids manipulate their specific host plants.

Abstract: International audience; Tenuipalpidae (Trombidiformes: Tetranychoidea) is an economically important family of plant-feeding mites. The family has approximately 1,100 described species in 41 genera with worldwide distribution. Currently, 40 species of Tenuipalpidae have been recorded from Brazil, and prior to this study only 11 were known from Bahia state. Five new species records are presented here for Bahia, making a total of 16 species now known from the state. Brevipalpus is considered the most important genus due to their association with, and ability to transmit, devastating plant viruses. Some diseases caused by viruses transmitted by Brevipalpus mites (VTBs) have already been recorded in the state of Bahia, such as the Passion fruit green spot virus and citrus leprosis. This paper presents a checklist of tenuipalpids reported from the state of Bahia in Brazil, including new records and an illustrated identification key to the species.

Abstract: Invasive species are permanently modifying the distribution and diversity of native species worldwide. For nearly two decades, a hornet, Vespa velutina nigrithorax (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), has been spreading in Europe. Due to its marked invasiveness, this yellow-legged hornet is of great economic and ecological concern, mainly because of the damage it causes to insects in general and bees in particular. Current management methods are sparse and ineffective. Naturally produced by insects, semio-chemicals have been proposed as integrated management tools in this context, either for disruption or mass trapping, as an alternative tool to conventional nonselective traps. Here, we focused on the venom gland, which produces the alarm pheromone. In previous studies, individuals showed marked diversity in their chemical profiles. However, to successfully conduct targeted pheromone-based trapping, the hornet's chemical ecology must be thoroughly characterized. Therefore, it was necessary to better understand the chemical composition of the alarm pheromone of not only workers but also other V. v. nigrithorax females. First, we evaluated the differences in venom gland profiles between the four types of females: queens, foundresses, pre-winter gynes, and workers. Next, we experimentally explored the venom gland profiles of V. velutina nigrithorax workers and pre-wintering gynes by in vivo and in vitro approaches. We found 13 new compounds in the venom gland, of which 9 were identified (chain lengths: C8 to C12). Two compounds were found exclusively in reproductive females. Profiles differed among pre-wintering gynes, foundresses, and queens but not between pre-wintering gynes and workers. This result indicates that the chemical signature of the female venom gland changes over the course of life history: from pre-wintering gynes to foundresses to queens., Les espèces invasives modifient en permanence la répartition et la diversité des espècesindigènes dans le monde entier. Depuis près de vingt ans, un frelon originaire d’Asie du Sud-Est,Vespa velutina nigrithorax (Hymenoptera : Vespidae), se répand en Europe. En raison de son caractèreinvasif marqué, ce frelon à pattes jaunes suscite de vives inquiétudes sur le plan économique etécologique, principalement en raison des dégâts qu’il cause aux insectes en général et aux abeillesen particulier. Les méthodes de gestion actuelles sont rares et inefficaces. Naturellement produits parles insectes, les produits sémio-chimiques ont été proposés comme outils de gestion intégrée. Dansce contexte, soit pour la perturbation, soit pour le piégeage de masse, en tant qu’outil alternatif auxpièges non sélectifs conventionnels. Ici, nous nous sommes concentrés sur la glande à venin, quiproduit la phéromone d’alarme. Des études antérieures ont montré que les femelles présentaientune variabilité dans les profils chimiques. Cependant, pour mener à bien un piégeage ciblé à basede phéromones, l’écologie chimique du frelon doit être caractérisée de manière approfondie. Il étaitdonc nécessaire de mieux comprendre la composition chimique de la phéromone d’alarme nonseulement des ouvrières, mais également des autres femelles de V. v. nigrithorax. Tout d’abord, nousavons examiné les différences dans les profils des glandes à venin entre les quatre types de femelles :les reines, les fondatrices, les gynes pré-hivernantes et les ouvrières. Ensuite, nous avons exploréexpérimentalement les profils des glandes à venin des ouvrières de V. velutina nigrithorax et des gynespré-hivernantes par des approches in vivo et in vitro. Nous avons constaté la présence de 13 nouveauxcomposés dans la glande à venin, dont 9 ont été identifiés (longueur des chaînes : C8 à C12). Deuxcomposés ont été trouvés exclusivement chez les femelles reproductrices. Les profils diffèrent entreles gynes pré-hivernantes, les fondatrices et les reines, mais pas entre les gynes pré-hivernantes et lesouvrières. Ce résultat indique que la signature chimique de la glande à venin femelle évolue au coursde l’histoire de vie : des gynes pré-hivernantes aux fondatrices, en passant par les reines.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Infant formula (IF) has to provide at least the same amount of amino acids (AAs) as human milk (HM). AA digestibility in HM and IF was not studied extensively, with no data available for tryptophan digestibility. Objectives: The present study aimed to measure the true ileal digestibility (TID) of total nitrogen and AAs in HM and IF to estimate AA bioavailability using Yucatan mini-piglets as an infant model. Methods: Twenty-four 19-day-old piglets (males and females) received either HM or IF for 6 days or a protein-free diet for 3 days, with cobalt-EDTA as an indigestible marker. Diets were fed hourly over 6 h before euthanasia and digesta collection. Total N, AA, and marker contents in diets and digesta were measured to determine the TID. Unidimensional statistical analyses were conducted. Results: Dietary N content was not different between HM and IF, while true protein was lower in HM (À4 g/L) due to a 7-fold higher nonprotein N content in HM. The TID of total N was lower (P < 0.001) for HM (91.3 AE 1.24%) than for IF (98.0 AE 0.810%), while the TID of amino acid nitrogen (AAN) was not different (average of 97.4 AE 0.655%, P ¼ 0.272). HM and IF had similar (P > 0.05) TID for most of the AAs including tryptophan (96.7 AE 0.950%, P ¼ 0.079), except for some AAs (lysine, phenylalanine, threonine, valine, alanine, proline, and serine), with small significant difference (P < 0.05). The first limiting AA was the aromatic AAs, and the digestible indispensable AA score (DIAAS) was higher for HM (DIAAS HM ¼ 101) than for IF (DIAAS IF ¼ 83). Conclusion: HM, compared to IF, had a lower TID for total N only, whereas the TID of AAN and most AAs, including Trp, was high and similar. A larger proportion of non-protein N is transferred to the microbiota with HM, which is of physiological relevance, although this fraction is poorly considered for IF manufacturing.

Abstract: International audience; Yield reduction over the years is a phenomenon that affects many fruit tree species, including hazel (Corylus avellana). Studying plant architecture could provide useful information for improving crop management, such as pruning, to reduce the impact of yield reductions. This study aimed to compare the relationship between bud composition and shoot length in hazel shoots. The experiment was carried out in January 2020 and 2021 in Deruta, Perugia (Italy). In 2020, 120 1-year-old shoots of C. avellana 'Tonda di Giffoni' were sampled. In 2021, the same observations were performed on lateral and apical 1-year-old shoots that had burst from parental buds in spring 2020. Depending on its length, each shoot was sorted into four categories: short (Sh) when shorter than 5 cm, medium (Me) when between 5 and 20 cm, long (Lo) when between 20 and 40 cm, and very long (VLo) when longer than 40 cm. For each shoot, shoot length, axillary and apical bud fate was recorded at each node: vegetative bud, latent bud, catkin, and mixed bud (V, B, C, and M, respectively). Percentage of lateral mixed buds was higher in longer shoots than in shorter ones while that of vegetative buds remained constant whatever the length. Fruit set, computed as the ratio between the number of nuts and the number of mixed buds, was significantly higher in Lo and VLo shoots. It was observed that the length of lateral proleptic shoots, developed in 2021, was related to the length of the bearer shoot from which it was developed. Proleptic lateral Sh shoots were the most frequent among all length categories while longer proleptic shoots (Lo and VLo) were originated only from Lo and VLo shoots. Managing tree architecture, considering a good balance between long and short shoots, and mixed and vegetative buds, could help control and prevent yield decrease in hazelnut trees.

Abstract: We study its controllability around the ground state when the linearized system is not controllable and wonder whether the quadratic term can help to recover the directions lost at the first order. More precisely, in this paper, we formulate assumptions under which the quadratic term induces a drift which prevents the small-time local controllability (STLC) of the system in appropriate spaces. For finite-dimensional systems, quadratic terms induce coercive drifts in the dynamic, quantified by integer negative Sobolev norms, along explicit Lie brackets which prevent STLC.In the context of the bilinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation, the first drift, quantified by the $H^{-1}$-norm of the control, was already observed and used to deny STLC with controls small in $L^\infty$. In this article, we improve this result by denying STLC with controls small in $W^{-1, \infty}$. Furthermore, for any positive integer $n$, we formulate assumptions under which one may observe a quadratic drift quantified by the $H^{-n}$-norm of the control and we use it to deny STLC in suitable spaces.

Abstract: International audience; The current rise of Open Science and Reproducibility in the Life Sciences requires the creation of rich, machine-actionable metadata in order to better share and reuse biological digital resources such as datasets, bioinformatics tools, training materials, etc. For this purpose, FAIR principles have been defined for both data and metadata and adopted by large communities, leading to the definition of specific metrics. However, automatic FAIRness assessment is still difficult because computational evaluations frequently require technical expertise and can be time-consuming. As a first step to address these issues, we propose FAIR-Checker , a web-based tool to assess the FAIRness of metadata presented by digital resources. FAIR-Checker offers two main facets: a “Check” module providing a thorough metadata evaluation and recommendations, and an “Inspect” module which assists users in improving metadata quality and therefore the FAIRness of their resource. FAIR-Checker leverages Semantic Web standards and technologies such as SPARQL queries and SHACL constraints to automatically assess FAIR metrics. Users are notified of missing, necessary, or recommended metadata for various resource categories. We evaluate FAIR-Checker in the context of improving the FAIRification of individual resources, through better metadata, as well as analyzing the FAIRness of more than 25 thousand bioinformatics software descriptions.

Abstract: International audience; Despite an increasing acknowledgement of fathers’ involvement in and impact on children’s lives, fathers remain underrepresented in child feeding and childhood obesity prevention research, interventions, and actions. Built on our own experiences with conducting research with fathers and recent evidence on this topic, this Research in Practice article has three aims. It will first substantiate the importance of including and studying fathers in the field of child feeding and childhood obesity prevention based on recent study results. Secondly, the article will present and discuss barriers to fathers' inclusion and participation (why isn't it happening?), among other issues, by drawing on sociological and gender ideological insights. Finally, it will provide recommendations and suggestions related to recruitment, focus and methods that can facilitate fathers’ involvement in future research, interventions, and practice. Taken together, this article aims to provide tools for giving fathers a voice in the field of child nutrition and by doing so, to decrease maternal-only “burden” of care. We hope our experiences and theoretical reflections will inspire and support researchers and practitioners to be as successful as possible in the realm of family care.

Abstract: Background: With the development of next generation sequencing technologies in France, exome sequencing (ES) has recently emerged as an opportunity to improve the diagnosis rate of patients presenting an intellectual disability (ID). To help French policy makers determine an adequate tariff for ES, we aimed to assess the unit cost per ES diagnostic test for ID from the preparation of the pre-analytical step until the report writing step and to identify its main cost drivers.Methods: A micro-costing bottom-up approach was conducted for the year 2018 in a French setting as part of the DISSEQ study, a cost-effectiveness study funded by the Ministry of Health and performed in collaboration with the GAD (Génétique des Anomalies du Développement), a genetic team from the Dijon University Hospital, and a public sequencing platform, the Centre National de Recherche en Génomique Humaine (CNRGH). The analysis was conducted from the point of view of these two ES stakeholders. All of the resources (labor, equipment, disposables and reagents, reusable material) required to analyze blood samples were identified, collected and valued. Several sensitivity analyses were performed.Results: The unit nominal cost per ES diagnostic test for ID was estimated to be €2,019.39. Labor represented 50.7% of the total cost. The analytical step (from the preparation of libraries to the analysis of sequences) represented 88% of the total cost. Sensitivity analyses suggested that a simultaneous price decrease of 20% for the capture kit and 50% for the sequencing support kit led to an estimation of €1,769 per ES diagnostic test for ID.Conclusion: This is the first estimation of ES cost to be done in the French setting of ID diagnosis. The estimation is especially influenced by the price of equipment kits, but more generally by the organization of the centers involved in the different steps of the analysis and the time period in which the study was conducted. However, conservation genetics still has a low impact on conservation practices. This study's aim is to integrate genetics in the conservation management of the only-known population of an extremely narrow-range endemic Corsican snail-Tyrrhenaria ceratina-, whose distribution area is restricted to the Ricantu site in Corsica. Using non-invasive DNA samples of 210 individuals, we amplified 13 microsatellites loci to assess the population viability, genetic structure and demographic history of the population, along with the estimation of the historical and contemporary gene flow between identified genetic clusters. We also estimated the dispersal ability of the species. Our results showed a surprisingly high genetic diversity, along with a pattern of isolation by distance (IBD) and a strongly spatialized genetic structure. Furthermore, we underlined a low functional connectivity, along with evidence of a recent decline in the population size, which are both likely due to a historical fragmentation between the sampled areas, caused by anthropization. Overall, this study allows to provide a first insight about the functioning of the population, to guide future conservation actions for the species.

Abstract: International audience; The recognition of the necessity to reduce meat consumption in affluent nations is now widely acknowledged. A large body of literature examines the personal factors that lead to meat reduction or avoidance, including the motivations and profiles of individuals. While excluding meat consumption from ones’ diet alone could be challenging, surprisingly, literature has sparsely examined the role of communities supporting this process, which includes both practices and convictions. This research seeks to make up for that and aims to investigate the impact of communities (both imagined and real) on the construction of vegetarian and vegan identities. To this end, nineteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with non-meat eaters, ten of whom underwent follow-up interviews. The analyses conducted focused on their practices, convictions, and interactions within communities. The findings revealed two major points: firstly, practices and convictions develop simultaneously and in relation to various types of communities; secondly, identity is constructed through both affiliation and differentiation processes. These findings offer strong theoretical and practical implications by contributing to the understanding of the impact of community-driven value-based identity built on conviction-based consumption practices. For brands, retailers and public policy makers, this research provides practical recommendations for promoting meat-free diets, not only through making information available but also by using the co-evolution of practice and convictions as leverage, and by empowering communities in the process.

Abstract: International audience; Natural and semi-natural grasslands, particularly dry grasslands, are high-value biodiversity hotspots in Europe and major challenges for ecological conservation and restoration. Soil transfer has been used successfully to restore dry grassland ecosystems (soil and vegetation), but should only be applied as a last resort and where an undegraded ecosystem has previously independently been earmarked for destruction. Assessing overall restoration success means taking soil recovery into account as well as vegetation regeneration. In Mediterranean regions and under global warming, soil hydrodynamic properties are the most critical limiting factors for the restoration of dry ecosystems. This study analyses soil physico-chemical parameters and hydrodynamic properties in reconstructed soils after soil transfer following a petrol land spill. Six years after soil transfer and compared to the surrounding soil reference steppe, the horizons of the soil transfer treatments were significantly less colonised by plant roots and showed very few biological activities and earthworm galleries. Then, their porosity was also significantly lower. Hydrodynamic properties continue to differ significantly between the restored site and the surrounding reference steppe ecosystem. There is also less available soil water and water drains faster in all soil transfer treatments. This can be explained by significant higher finer grain size (clays, silt), chemical elements (N, P, K), and plant cover for soil transfer treatments but significant, lower levels of organic matterdue to mechanical soil compaction during soil spreading. The soil transfer treatment involving full reconstitution of the three main soil layers yields the most encouraging results. However, the question arises of whether long-term vegetation recovery might be compromised by soil hydrological dysfunction under global warming.

Abstract: International audience; The environmental fate of insecticidal Cry proteins, including time-dependent conservation of biological properties, results from their structural stability in soils. The complex cascade of reactions involved in biological action requires Cry proteins to be in solution. However, the pH-dependent changes in conformational stability and the adsorption–desorption mechanisms of Cry protein on soil minerals remain unclear. We used Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) calculation and differential scanning calorimetry to interpret the driving forces and structural stabilities of Cry1Ac and two contrasting model proteins adsorbed by montmorillonite. The structural stability of Cry1Ac is closer to that of the “hard” protein, α-chymotrypsin, than that of the “soft” bovine serum albumin (BSA). The pH-dependent adsorption of Cry1Ac and α-chymotrypsin could be explained by DLVO theory, whereas the BSA adsorption deviated from it. Patch-controlled electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic effects, and entropy changes following protein unfolding on a mineral surface could contribute to Cry1Ac adsorption. Cry1Ac, like chymotrypsin, was partly denatured on montmorillonite, and its structural stability decreased with an increase in pH. Moreover, small changes in the conformational heterogeneity of both Cry1Ac and chymotrypsin were observed following adsorption. Conversely, adsorbed BSA was completely denatured regardless of the solution pH. The moderate conformational rearrangement of adsorbed Cry1Ac may partially explain why the insecticidal activity of Bt toxin appears to be conserved in soils, albeit for a relatively short time period.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents the way the digital transformation of the agricultural sector is implemented in Europe and in France. It describes the main European and national strategies, the structure of research and innovation initiatives, and the investment in capacity building to foster innovation, adoption and use. More specifically, the French research and innovation ecosystem on digital agriculture is described. The actors involved come from different organisations, such as research and higher educational institutes, government agencies, agricultural technology (AgTech) companies, farmer unions etc., and work together by means of associations (e.g. Robagri), networks (e.g. RMT Naexus, DigiFermes, Fermes Leader), or living labs (e.g. Occitanum) on both digital technology assessment and co-design. Additionally, support is devoted to capacity building (e.g. Le Mas numérique, Mobilab) and a better understanding of the drivers of adoption and use of digital technologies (e.g. FrOCDA). Among these various organisations, #DigitAg, the Digital Agriculture Convergence Lab, has been created to foster interdisciplinary research on digital agriculture. All these initiatives aim to use digital technologies to support the European Green Deal, Farm-to-Fork and Biodiversity strategies as well as the French orientation towards more agroecological practices for safer and more sustainable food systems. Even though this organisational ecosystem is developing fast, the objective of encouraging the coevolution of both digital and green transformations is not without challenges that still need to be overcome, either through new research, innovations, initiatives or collaborations between the actors involved.

Abstract: International audience; Context : Flower-visiting insects depend on floral resource availability from both cultivated and semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes. Landscape studies exploring insect abundance mainly focus on land cover maps without considering plant species within. Highlighting the functional role of landscapes through the potential floral resources they provide is an overlooked innovative approach. Objectives : We aimed to identify traits of floral communities that are important, across several spatial scales, for explaining the abundance of flower-visiting insects. Mapping and quantifying potential floral resources according to their attractivity, accessibility and profitability in both crop and non-crop habitats was performed to gain insights into flower-vising insect requirements. Methods : We translated land-cover maps of 39 landscapes of 250 m, 500 m and 1000 m radius into potential floral resource maps, using pre-existing vegetation surveys and floral traits databases. In the centres of the landscapes, the abundance of flower-visiting insect groups (domestic and wild bees, bumblebees and hoverflies) were recorded in organic winter cereal fields. We then fitted Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) to investigate the effects of flower trait variables (pre-selected with conditional random forests) at both field and landscape scales on the abundance of each flower-visiting insect group. Results : Floral resource maps explained the abundances of flower-visiting insect groups. Small wild bees (< 1 cm) responded positively to the relative amount of attractive and accessible floral resources at 250 m. The abundance of domestic bees and bumblebees was positively correlated with the relative amount of high nectar producing plants at 1000 m. The abundance of hoverflies was positively influenced by the relative amount of actinomorphic flowers (i.e., those with radial symmetry), at 1000 m.Conclusion : Resource maps could explain flower-visiting insect abundances, identify which category of floral resources organisms require, and determine in which habitat types these resources prevail. These results open a new research area related to managing the environment by optimising floral resources for flower-visiting insect conservation and pollination maintenance.

Abstract: Class II water-soluble chlorophyll proteins (WSCPs) from Brassicaceae are non-photosynthetic proteins that bind with chlorophyll (Chl) and its derivatives. The physiological function of WSCPs is still unclear, but it is assumed to be involved in stress responses, which is likely related to their Chl-binding and protease inhibition (PI) activities. Yet, the dual function and simultaneous functionality of WSCPs must still be better understood. Here, the biochemical functions of Brassica napus drought–induced 22-kDa protein (BnD22), a major WSCP expressed in B. napus leaves, were investigated using recombinant hexahistidine-tagged protein. We showed that BnD22 inhibited cysteine proteases, such as papain, but not serine proteases. BnD22 was able to bind with Chla or Chlb to form tetrameric complexes. Unexpectedly, BnD22–Chl tetramer displays higher inhibition toward cysteine proteases, indicating (i) simultaneous Chl-binding and PI activities and (ii) Chl-dependent activation of PI activity of BnD22. Moreover, the photostability of BnD22–Chl tetramer was reduced upon binding with the protease. Using three-dimensional structural modeling and molecular docking, we revealed that Chl binding favors interaction between BnD22 and proteases. Despite its Chl-binding ability, the BnD22 was not detected in chloroplasts but rather in the endoplasmic reticulum and vacuole. In addition, the C-terminal extension peptide of BnD22, which cleaved off post-translationally in vivo, was not implicated in subcellular localization. Instead, it drastically promoted the expression, solubility and stability of the recombinant protein.

Abstract: International audience; Many researchers, policy makers and food activists view Short Food Supply Chains (SFSC) as attractive levers for improving farm income and the sustainability of farming systems. However, the empirical evidence documenting the association between SFSC participation and farm economic performance has been mixed. In this study, through a meta-analysis using a logistic regression, we identify key factors to explain differences between studies that find better economic performance in SFSC and those that do not. Our meta-analysis consists of 48 studies published in English and French from 2000 to 2022 that examine the economic performance of farms engaged in SFSC. Based on far more empirical evidence than previous reviews, we find that the relationship between SFSC participation and farmer income remains ambiguous. More specifically the findings indicate that the reported effect of SFSC on a farm economic performance varies depending on location and the indicator used to capture the economic performance of farms. Studies conducted in Europe are more likely to report higher farmer income as are studies that use profit satisfaction metrics rather than measures of gross or net income. We also emphasize the need to interpret the reported results cautiously because few are based on causal inference methods. Furthermore, the very few studies that account for selection bias often do so with inadequate corrections.

Abstract: International audience; -Plutella xylostella cause severe damage on cruciferous plants all over the world. Farmers in several regions of Brazil report increasing inefficiency of chemical control, even when using high insecticide concentrations. We evaluate here the susceptibility of brazilian diamondback moth populations to the Premio (R) (Chlorantraniliprole), Dipel (R) (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki) and Lannate (R) BR (Oxime Methylcarbamate) insecticides, frequently used in Brazil. Susceptibility bioassays with five field -collected and two laboratory diamondback moth populations were conducted with increasing concentrations of insecticides up to ten times above the recommended concentration. Extremely high and region-dependent resistances were found in field populations against Chlorantraniliprole and B. thuringiensis, with Resistance Ratios up to 370.0 times for the Camocim de Sao Felix population. For Oxime Methylcarbamate, we were not able to do Probit analyses for the field populations because of very low mortality rates. Laboratory populations showed resistance to the three tested insecticides with all LC50 concentrations exceeding the recommended doses by at least 3 times. Our results show strong and variable resistance to the three tested insecticides according to the region of origin. To maintain efficient pest control in a large country like Brazil, local levels of resistance need therefore to be monitored by the authorities and reassessment and adjustments of regional doses of insecticides should be implemented as a public policy, to prevent massive spread of insecticides in the field, as well as increases in cases of resistance.

Abstract: Plant ecologists and molecular biologists have long considered the hypothesis of a trade-off between plant growth and defence separately. In particular, how genes thought to control the growth–defence trade-off at the molecular level relate to trait-based frameworks in functional ecology, such as the slow–fast plant economics spectrum, is unknown. We grew 49 phenotypically diverse rice genotypes in pots under optimal conditions and measured growth-related functional traits and the constitutive expression of 11 genes involved in plant defence. We also quantified the concentration of silicon (Si) in leaves to estimate silica-based defences. Rice genotypes were aligned along a slow–fast continuum, with slow-growing, late-flowering genotypes versus fast-growing, early-flowering genotypes. Leaf dry matter content and leaf Si concentrations were not aligned with this axis and negatively correlated with each other. Live-fast genotypes exhibited greater expression of OsNPR1, a regulator of the salicylic acid pathway that promotes plant defence while suppressing plant growth. These genotypes also exhibited greater expression of SPL7 and GH3.2, which are also involved in both stress resistance and growth. Our results do not support the hypothesis of a growth–defence trade-off when leaf Si and leaf dry matter content are considered, but they do when hormonal pathway genes are considered. We demonstrate the benefits of combining ecological and molecular approaches to elucidate the growth–defence trade-off, opening new avenues for plant breeding and crop science.

Abstract: International audience; Reports indicate that intraspecific neighbours alter the physiology of focal plants, and with a few exceptions, their molecular responses to neighbours are unknown. Recently, changes in susceptibility to pathogen resulting from such interactions were demonstrated, a phenomenon called neighbour-modulated susceptibility (NMS). However, the genetics of NMS and the associated molecular responses are largely unexplored. Here, we analysed in rice the modification of biomass and susceptibility to the blast fungus pathogen in the Kitaake focal genotype in the presence of 280 different neighbours. Using genome-wide association studies, we identified the loci in the neighbour that determine the response in Kitaake. Using a targeted transcriptomic approach, we characterized the molecular responses in focal plants co-cultivated with various neighbours inducing a reduction in susceptibility. Our study demonstrates that NMS is controlled by one major locus in the rice genome of its neighbour. Furthermore, we show that this locus can be associated with characteristic patterns of gene expression in focal plant. Finally, we propose an hypothesis where Pi could play a role in explaining this case of NMS. Our study sheds light on how plants affect the physiology in their neighbourhood and opens perspectives for understanding plant-plant interactions.

Abstract: International audience; The metabolic scaling theory (MST) predicts quasi-universal trait-size relationships in plants, characterised by a unique allometric exponent within and across large taxonomic scales. However, recent studies have identified variability in allometric relationships, without a clear understanding of the modulating role played by genetic variation and environment.Here, we investigated (1) the allometric relationships for two central traits of MST, namely total leaf area and plant growth rate, in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana, (2) the variability of plant allometries between genotypes and (3) the plastic responses of plant allometries under water deficit, high temperature and their interaction.Using a population of 120 genotypes, we found that intraspecific allometries adhered on average with MST predictions. However, a broad variability but a moderate plasticity in the allometric exponents was observed across genotypes and environments. Allometric exponents were impacted significantly, yet weakly, by water deficit, but not by high temperature. Moreover, genotypes that deviated from MST predictions exhibited more plasticity in trait-size relationships than genotypes that followed MST predictions.Our study suggests that plant allometry is genetically variable and might be related to different adaptive strategies to cope with stressing conditions. Thus, our results highlights the need of assessing trait-size relationships within species to understand the mechanisms of plant adaptation to contrasted environments.

Abstract: International audience; Climate change is most strongly felt in the polar regions of the world, with significant impacts on the species that live there. The arrival of parasites and pathogens from more temperate areas may become a significant problem for these populations, but current observations of parasite presence often lack a historical reference of prior absence. Observations in the high Arctic of the seabird tick Ixodes uriae suggested that this species expanded poleward in the last two decades in relation to climate change. As this tick can have a direct impact on the breeding success of its seabird hosts and vectors several pathogens, including Lyme disease spirochaetes, understanding its invasion dynamics is essential for predicting its impact on polar seabird populations. Here, we use population genetic data and host serology to test the hypothesis that I. uriae recently expanded into Svalbard. Both black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) were sampled for ticks and blood in Kongsfjorden, Spitsbergen. Ticks were genotyped using microsatellite markers and population genetic analyses were performed using data from 14 reference populations from across the tick's northern distribution. In contrast to predictions, the Spitsbergen population showed high genetic diversity and significant differentiation from reference populations, suggesting long-term isolation. Host serology also demonstrated a high exposure rate to Lyme disease spirochaetes (Bbsl). Targeted PCR and sequencing confirmed the presence of Borrelia garinii in a Spitsbergen tick, demonstrating the presence of Lyme disease bacteria in the high Arctic for the first time. Taken together, results contradict the notion that I. uriae has recently expanded into the high Arctic. Rather, this tick has likely been present for some time, maintaining relatively high population sizes and an endemic transmission cycle of Bbsl. Close future observations of population infestation/infection rates will now be necessary to relate epidemiological changes to ongoing climate modifications.

Abstract: The data that support the findings of this study are openly available in figshare at https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.21834459.; International audience; Plant dehydration tolerance confers drought survival in grasses, but the mortality thresholds according to soil water content (SWC), vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and plant-plant interactions are little explored. We compared the dehydration dynamics of leaf meristems, which are the key surviving organs, plant mortality, and recovery of Mediterranean and temperate populations of two perennial grass species, Dactylis glomerata and Festuca arundinacea, grown in monocultures and mixtures under a low-VPD (1.5 kPa) versus a high-VPD drought (2.2 kPa). The lethal drought index (LD 50), that is, SWC associated with 50% plant mortality, ranged from 2.87% (ψs = −1.68 MPa) to 2.19% (ψs = −4.47 MPa) and reached the lowest values under the low-VPD drought. Populations of D. glomerata were more dehydration-tolerant (lower LD 50), survived and recovered better than F. arundinacea populations. Plant-plant interactions modified dehydration tolerance and improved post-drought recovery in mixtures compared with monocultures. Water content as low as 20.7%-36.1% in leaf meristems allowed 50% of plants to survive. We conclude that meristem dehydration causes plant mortality and that drought acclimation can increase dehydration tolerance. Genetic diversity, acclimation and plant-plant interactions are essential sources of dehydration tolerance variability to consider when predicting drought-induced mortality.

Abstract: International audience; Grapevine decline, a major global viticulture issue, is defined as a multi-year decrease in vine productivity and/or increase in vine mortality. Although grapevine trunk diseases are one of the most studied causes, the decline is multifactorial and associated with more than 70 factors, including abiotic and biotic hazards. With so many factors to consider, the phenomenon is difficult to understand. Our study aims to make it easier to determine and assess grapevine decline by focusing on three key indicators: yield, mortality and vegetative vigour. We investigated the relationships between these indicators from both a temporal and spatial perspective to propose a set of diagnostic indicators. Thus, we conducted a winegrower survey, a historical analysis of grapevine decline and field measurements of the abovementioned indicators on plot networks in three major French winegrowing regions (see graphical abstract): Bordeaux, Cognac and Languedoc. We found that winegrowers' perceptions of decline were consistent with an objective characterisation based on field measurements of the indicators. Although vine mortality progressively spread over the years, neither the survey nor the historical analysis showed a direct link between decline and yield loss. Rather, large yearly fluctuations in yield, which did not systematically decrease over time, account for this finding. As a result, the mortality rate and the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) indicators were shown to be earlier indicators of grapevine decline than yield loss (addressed from the yield achievement ratio, YAR). We performed a multifactorial analysis of the overall data set from the three regions to deepen our understanding of the diversity of declining situations and the underlying environmental and management factors contributing to decline. Finally, two ground-based NDVI indicators and an image-analysis methodology using aerial photographs were proposed as easy-to-obtain indicators of grapevine decline. NDVI indicators were linearly correlated with both the YAR and mortality rate. This study provides a better understanding and promising tools for the early diagnosis of grapevine decline.

Abstract: International audience; Female ornamentation is frequently observed in animal species and is sometimes found as more evolutionary labile than male ornamentation. A complex array of factors may explain its presence and variation. Here we assessed the role of female cost of reproduction and paternal care. Both factors have been pinpointed as important by theoretical studies but have not been investigated yet in details at the interspecific level. We worked on 133 species of North temperate Passeriformes bird species for which both the clutch volume-here taken as the proxy of female cost of reproduction-and amount of paternal care are relatively well known. Using spectrometry, we measured the whole-body colored plumage patches and quantified three metrics corresponding to brightness (i.e. achromatic component), color chromaticity (i.e. intensity), and color volume (i.e. diversity). We found a strong association between male and female color metrics. Controlling for this association, we found additional small but detectable effects of both cost of reproduction and paternal care. First, females of species with more paternal care were slightly brighter. Second, the interaction between the level of paternal care and egg volume was correlated with female color intensity: females with more paternal care were more chromatic, with this association mostly present when their investment in reproduction was low. Together these results suggest that female cost of reproduction and paternal care are part of the multiple factors explaining variation of female coloration, besides the strong covariation between male and female coloration.

Abstract: International audience; The development of an integrated theory of subsurface drainage based on hydrology and hydrogeology concepts is presented. The historical context, the main hypothesis derived from the Boussinesq equation and the validation of the model predictions are discussed. Theoretical developments of this equation demonstrate that a single parameter (σ)-a combination of soil and drainage system properties-is sufficient for predicting the dynamics of subsurface drain flow rates. We also demonstrate that these drain flow rates are a function of the level of water replenishment in the system (classically the water table elevation), of the recharge intensity of the aquifer and of a buffer function related to the swelling or deflation of the water table shape during recharge events. For values of σ > 1, the buffer role of the water table is negligible. In that case approx. 13% of the water table recharge contributes to the flow rate, which is shown to explain the observed disconnection between water table elevations and peak flow rates at the outlet of classic agricultural drainage systems and to predict these peak flow rates accurately. A modelling approach based on this theory and validated experimentally (SIDRA model) allowed us to test the quality of the peak flow prediction. The SIDRA model also includes a surface runoff module and has been coupled to different modelling tools and used to analyse the impacts of subsurface drainage on water quality. The approach contributed towards the development of tools that helped to connect better the drainage systems to the hydrological functioning of watersheds.

Abstract: Aphids are serious pests of agricultural and ornamental plants and important model systems for hemipteran-plant interactions. The long evolutionary history of aphids with their host plants has resulted in a variety of systems that provide insight into the different adaptation strategies of aphids to plants and vice versa. In the past, various plant-aphid interactions have been documented, but lack of functional tools has limited molecular studies on the mechanisms of plant-aphid interactions. Recent technological advances have begun to reveal plant-aphid interactions at the molecular level and to increase our knowledge of the mechanisms of aphid adaptation or specialization to different host plants. In this article, we compile and analyze available information on plant-aphid interactions, discuss the limitations of current knowledge, and argue for new research directions. We advocate for more work that takes advantage of natural systems and recently established molecular techniques to obtain a comprehensive view of plant-aphid interaction mechanisms. Abstract: International audience; Wetlands are the largest natural source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. The eddy covariance method provides robust measurements of net ecosystem exchange of CH4, but interpreting its spatiotemporal variations is challenging due to the co-occurrence of CH4 production, oxidation, and transport dynamics. Here, we estimate these three processes using a data-model fusion approach across 25 wetlands in temperate, boreal, and Arctic regions. Our data-constrained model—iPEACE—reasonably reproduced CH4 emissions at 19 of the 25 sites with normalized root mean square error of 0.59, correlation coefficient of 0.82, and normalized standard deviation of 0.87. Among the three processes, CH4 production appeared to be the most important process, followed by oxidation in explaining inter-site variations in CH4 emissions. Based on a sensitivity analysis, CH4 emissions were generally more sensitive to decreased water table than to increased gross primary productivity or soil temperature. For periods with leaf area index (LAI) of ≥20% of its annual peak, plant-mediated transport appeared to be the major pathway for CH4 transport. Abstract: International audience; Le warrantage se développe actuellement dans plusieurs pays du Sahel. C’est un dispositif de crédit-stockage mis en place par une organisation d’agriculteurs et une institution financière. Il consiste à stocker quelques mois une partie des céréales après la récolte dans un entrepôt en échange d’un crédit individuel. Sans ce crédit, les agriculteurs tendent à vendre leurs céréales dès la récolte pour rembourser les dettes ou subvenir à leurs besoins. Conséquence : les familles ont par la suite du mal à assurer la soudure, période de transition entre l’épuisement des stocks et la nouvelle récolte, et à investir dans leurs systèmes de production agricole. L’évaluation d’impact menée dans l’Ouest du Burkina Faso montre que le warrantage accroît la disponibilité alimentaire en période de soudure et qu’il renforce l’investissement et la production agricoles. Pour que son développement s’accélère, il est nécessaire de satisfaire trois conditions : disposer d’infrastructures de stockage adaptées, assurer la qualité des produits stockés, et établir des relations de confiance étroites entre institutions financières, organisations de producteurs et commerçants. Cette dernière condition est mise à mal par l’extension des conflits armés au Sahel.

Abstract: This article is part of the themed collection: Food & Function HOT Articles 2023.; International audience; Understanding the mechanisms of food digestion is of paramount importance to determine the effect foods have on human health. Significant knowledge on the fate of food during digestion has been generated in healthy adults due to the development of physiologically-relevant in vitro digestion models. However, it appears that the performance of the oro-gastrointestinal tract is affected by ageing and that a model simulating the digestive conditions found in a younger adult (65 years). The objectives of the present paper were: (1) to conduct an exhaustive literature search to find data on the physiological parameters of the older adult oro-gastrointestinal tract, (2) to define the parameters of an in vitro digestion model adapted to the older adult. International experts have discussed all the parameters during a dedicated workshop organized within the INFOGEST network. Data on food bolus properties collected in the older adult were gathered, including food particle size found in older adult boluses. In the stomach and small intestine, data suggest that significant physiological changes are observed between younger and older adults. In the latter, the rate of gastric emptying is slowed down, the pH of the stomach content is higher, the amount of secretions and thus the hydrolytic activities of gastric and intestinal digestive enzymes are reduced and the concentration of bile salts lower. The consensus in vitro digestion model of the older adult proposed here will allow significant progress to be made in understanding the fate of food in this specific population, facilitating the development of foods adapted to their nutritional needs. Nevertheless, better foundational data when available and further refinement of the parameters will be needed to implement the proposed model in the future.

Abstract: Phosphorus (P) availability affects the response of terrestrial ecosystems to environmental and climate change (e.g., elevated CO2), yet the magnitude of this effect remains uncertain. This uncertainty arises mainly from a lack of quantitative understanding of the soil biological and geochemical P cycling processes, particularly the P exchange with soil mineral surfaces, which is often described by a Langmuir sorption isotherm. We first conducted a literature review on P sorption experiments and terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs) using a Langmuir isotherm. We then developed a new algorithm to describe the inorganic P exchange between soil solution and soil matrix based on the double-surface Langmuir isotherm and extracted empirical equations to calculate the sorption capacity and Langmuir coefficient. We finally tested the conventional and new models of P sorption at five beech forest sites in Germany along a soil P stock gradient using the QUINCY (QUantifying Interactions between terrestrial Nutrient CYcles and the climate system) TBM. We found that the conventional (single-surface) Langmuir isotherm approach in most TBMs largely differed from P sorption experiments regarding the sorption capacities and Langmuir coefficients, and it simulated an overly low soil P-buffering capacity. Conversely, the double-surface Langmuir isotherm approach adequately reproduced the observed patterns of soil inorganic P pools. The better representation of inorganic P cycling using the double-surface Langmuir approach also improved simulated foliar N and P concentrations as well as the patterns of gross primary production and vegetation carbon across the soil P gradient. The novel model generally reduces the estimates of P limitation compared with the conventional model, particularly at the low-P site, as the model constraint of slow inorganic P exchange on plant productivity is reduced.

Abstract: We characterize geometrically the regularizing effects of the semigroups generated by accretive non-selfadjoint quadratic differential operators. As a byproduct, we establish the subelliptic estimates enjoyed by these operators, being expected to be optimal. These results prove conjectures by M. Hitrik, K. Pravda-Starov and J. Viola. The proof relies on a new representation of the polar decomposition of these semigroups. Abstract: International audience; Interactions among plants have been long recognized as a major force driving plant community dynamics and crop yield. Surprisingly, our knowledge of the ecological genetics associated with variation of plant-plant interactions remains limited. In this opinion article by scientists from complementary disciplines, the international PLANTCOM network identified four timely questions to foster a better understanding of the mechanisms mediating plant assemblages. We propose that by identifying the key relationships among phenotypic traits involved in plant-plant interactions and the underlying adaptive genetic and molecular pathways, while considering environmental fluctuations at diverse spatial and time scales, we can improve predictions of genotype-by-genotype-by-environment interactions and modeling of productive and stable plant assemblages in wild habitats and crop fields.

Abstract: 10 pages; International audience; Over the course of history, humans have moved crops from their regions of origin to new locations across the world. The social, cultural and economic drivers of these movements have generated differences not only between current distributions of crops and their climatic origins, but also between crop distributions and climate suitability for their production. Although these mismatches are particularly important to inform agricultural strategies on climate change adaptation, they have, to date, not been quantified consistently at the global level. Here, we show that the relationships between the distributions of 12 major food crops and climate suitability for their yields display strong variation globally. After investigating the role of biophysical, socio-economic and historical factors, we report that high-income world regions display a better match between crop distribution and climate suitability. In addition, although crops are farmed predominantly in the same climatic range as their wild progenitors, climate suitability is not necessarily higher there, a pattern that reflects the legacy of domestication history on current crop distribution. Our results reveal how far the global distribution of major crops diverges from their climatic optima and call for greater consideration of the multiple dimensions of the crop socio-ecological niche in climate change adaptive strategies.

Abstract: We construct martingale solutions for the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations in the framework of the modelling under location uncertainty (LU). These solutions are pathwise and unique when the spatial dimension is 2D. We then prove that if the noise intensity goes to zero, these solutions converge, up to a subsequence in dimension 3, to a solution of the deterministic Navier-Stokes equation. This warrants that the LU Navier-Stokes equations can be interpreted as a large-scale model of the deterministic Navier-Stokes equation.

Abstract: We use an in-house code based on polyhedral representation of particle shapes and a rigorous contact detection algorithm to investigate the evolution of orthotropic elastic response of regular polyhedral and spherical particle packings. Our DEM algorithm is able to distinguish different types of contact (face-face, face-edge, face-vertex, edge-edge, edge-vertex, vertex-vertex). A linear force law based on normal overlaps at the contact points between particles is implemented and face-face and face-edge contacts are represented by at least three and two contact points, respectively. Dense and isotropic packings of polyhedral particles with different numbers of faces were prepared by isostatic compaction. Then, they were sheared under tri-periodic boundary conditions for different values of interparticle friction coefficient. During shearing, 16 instances corresponding to a wide variety of contact orientation anisotropies were stored and relaxed a static state before applying two distinct strain probes to measure the five independent elastic moduli of the sample. By comparing the simulation data with effective medium theory (EMT), our results clearly show that the elastic moduli are functions of two microstructural parameters: 1) a constraint number that accounts for contact types (face-face and face-edge contacts between polyhedra), and 2) the contact orientation anisotropy. The proposed expression of elastic moduli isolates the direct effect of particle shape, related to the nonaffine particle displacement field from the indirect effect, related to the granular microstructure. The effect of particle shape appears at two levels: on the one hand, through four parameters in the proposed expression, which are independent of friction coefficient, and, on the other hand, through the microstructure reflected by the values of constraint number and fabric anisotropy, which depend on both particle shape and interparticle friction coefficient.

Abstract: Background and purpose: Standard treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA)is 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and mitomycin C (MMC) based chemoradiotherapy (CRT). This phase II study (EudraCT: 2011-005436-26) assessed the tolerance and complete response (CR) rate at 8 weeks of panitumumab (Pmab) combined with MMC-5FU-based CRT.Methods: Patients with locally advanced tumors without metastases (T2 > 3 cm, T3-T4, or N + whatever T stage) were treated with IMRT up to 65 Gy and concomitant CT according to the doses defined by a previous phase I study (MMC: 10 mg/m2; 5FU: 400 mg/m2; Pmab: 3 mg/kg). The expected CR rate was 80%.Results: Forty-five patients (male: 9, female: 36; median age: 60.1 [41.5-81]) were enrolled in 15 French centers. The most common related grade 3-4 toxicities observed were digestive (51.1%), hematologic (lymphopenia: 73.4%; neutropenia: 11.1%), radiation dermatitis (13.3%), and asthenia (11.1%) with RT interruption in 14 patients. One patient died because of mesenteric ischemia during the CRT, possibly related to treatment. In ITT analysis, the CR rate at 8 weeks after CRT was 66.7% [90%CI: 53.4-78.2]. Median follow-up was 43.6 months [IC 95%: 38.61-47.01]. Overall survival, recurrence-free and colostomy-free survival at 3 years were 80% [95%CI: 65.1-89], 62.2% [IC95%: 46.5-74.6] and 68.8 % [IC95%: 53.1-80.2] respectively.Conclusion: Panitumumab in combination with CRT for locally advanced SCCA failed to meet the expected CR rate and exhibited a poor tolerance. Cependant, les mouvements de l'enfant et de la mère pendant l'acquisition entraînent des artefacts sur les images. Des séquences IRM utltra-rapides, permettent de réduire les artefacts mais du mouvement persiste entre les coupes. Nous proposons une méthode permettant de corriger le mouvement entre les coupes, basée sur l'intersection entre les coupes orthogonales, ainsi qu'une nouvelle méthode pour la détection des coupes mal recalées.

Abstract: International audience; Comme toute technologie le radar évolue et fait face à de nombreuses problématiques (management de spectre, traitement du clutter, amélioration de la résolution, ...). Cela conduit à la création et l'optimisation de nouvelles formes d'ondes conjointement à leur traitement. Pour y parvenir, nous avons orienté notre étude sur des signaux bio-inspirés de ceux des chauvessouris et observé les avantages potentiels à utiliser de telles formes d'ondes. Cet article présente une comparaison entre des formes d'ondes dites classiques en radar et une autre bio-inspirée en analysant notamment leurs réponses à un traitement usuel. La modélisation de cette forme d'onde bio-inspirée permet de comparer plusieurs stratégies de modulation fréquentielle au sein d'une impulsion. Les bornes de Cramér-Rao sont calculées afin de quantifier les capacités d'estimation en retard et Doppler de chaque forme d'onde.

Cet article explore l'utilisation du regroupement hiérarchique pour la segmentation multivariée des délais réseaux. Cette méthode identifie les corrélations spatiales et segmente conjointement les séries temporelles au sein d'un même groupe de délais. Une étape de lissage utilisant l'algorithme de Viterbi est proposée comme post-traitement pour mieux intégrer la dépendance temporelle. Cette méthode globale est évaluée sur un ensemble de données réelles, mettant en évidence des performances satisfaisantes et un coût de calcul limité.

Abstract: Les informations bibliographiques du livre des résumés sont à venir après la fin du congrès.; International audience; Feed efficiency is a research priority to support a sustainable meat production, but it is also recognized as a complex trait that integrates multiple biological pathways orchestrated in and by various tissues. This study aims to determine the relationships between biological entities underlying the interindividual variation of feed efficiency in growing pigs. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) was calculated from a total of 47 Large White pigs from a divergent selection for residual feed intake and fed high starch or high-fat high fiber diets during 58 days. We considered transcriptomics (60 k porcine microarray) and metabolomics (1H-NMR analysis and target gas chromatography) datasets obtained in the whole blood of pigs at the end of the trial. We studied whether connecting these two levels of biological organization will help for a better understanding of the key biological processes driving the phenotypic difference in feed efficiency. We identified 33 weighted gene co-expression networks (WGCNA) in the whole blood (13 to 2,491 unique genes). The eigengenes of six modules were correlated to FCR (P < 0.05). Most of these modules were enriched in genes participating in immune and defense-related processes. Profiles in circulating metabolites and fatty acids were summarized by weighed linear combinations from principal component analyses, and correlated to the eigengenes of the co-expressed genes modules. A significant association was found between a module of coexpressed genes participating to T cell receptor signaling and cell development process and related to FCR, and the circulating concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids. Finally, we provided a new method to integrate those experimental data and the public knowledge from metabolic pathway networks databases, to show where and how these molecules at different levels of biological organization participate and interact with each other. Databases of biological pathways in BioPAX format, represented by graphs, were queried to identify participants of interest in interactions. Altogether, these different approaches will help to depict biological systems and understand complex traits such as feed efficiency.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we introduce a new attack for the Loidreau scheme [PQCrypto 2017] and its more recent variant LowMS. This attack is based on a constrained linear system for which we provide two solving approaches: the first one is an enumeration algorithm inspired from combinatorial attacks on the Rank Decoding (RD) Problem. While the attack technique remains very simple, it allows us to obtain the best known structural attack on the parameters of these two schemes. the second one is to rewrite it as a bilinear system over Fq. Even if Gröbner basis techniques on this second system seem infeasible, we provide a detailed analysis of the first degree fall polynomials which arise when applying such algorithms.

Abstract: International audience; Payments for Environmental or Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes have become a popular tool to addressenvironmental degradation and to promote sustainable management of ecosystem services. We use metaregressionanalysis on a sample of 110 individual studies to investigate the determinants of the environmentaleffectiveness, defined as the probability to increase environmental services (ES) provision, of about 149 PESschemesimplemented worldwide. We find that increased effectiveness of PES schemes is strongly associatedwith periodical third-party monitoring, generic reference design and to a lesser extent results-based payments.We further study the determinants of PES additionality, defined as direct changes in ES provision induced by thePES scheme, compared to a baseline without PES, on a smaller sample of 41 studies from which we could obtainthe necessary data. The results confirm the role of certain design variables, such as monitoring type, and raise apotential trade-off between enrolment and additionality in the assessment of PES effectiveness.

Abstract: International audience; Unsustainable use of water resources and climate change will exacerbate the existing tensions surrounding resources, especially in the Mediterranean context. Despite investments in costly modern equipment, the performance of irrigated agriculture remains below expectations, notably because of the lack of available water data and the limited use of decision support tools. Although a variety of soil moisture sensors are available on the market, they are not widely used by the agricultural community because of their high cost and complexity. Access to information at an unprecedented level, via easily accessible low-cost and low-tech sensors, may be a major lever for improved identification of achievable gains in performance, and to guide actors toward efficient water management. To explore this hypothesis, an open source wireless soil moisture sensor, low-energy and economically and technically accessible, was developed. The tool was designed according to water users’ requirements and applied to a Tunisian irrigation scheme subject to major water use efficiency issues. The functioning of the wireless sensor network was tested on pilot plots over a growing season and compared with commercial sensors. A single parameter calibration can be performed in either the laboratory or the field. This low-cost sensor can be used for real-time irrigation monitoring and as a decision-making tool for water management.
