Abstract

In this paper we discuss the supersymmetric localization of the 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ off-shell gauged supergravity in the background of the $\textrm{AdS}_4$ neutral topological black hole, which is the gravity dual of the ABJM theory defined on the boundary $\textrm{S}^1 \times \mathbb{H}^2$. We compute the large-$N$ expansion of the supergravity partition function. The result gives the black hole entropy with the logarithmic correction, which matches the previous result of the entanglement entropy of the ABJM theory up to some stringy effects. Our result is consistent with the previous on-shell one-loop computation of the logarithmic correction to black hole entropy. It provides an explicit example of the identification of the entanglement entropy of the boundary conformal field theory with the bulk black hole entropy beyond the leading order given by the classical Bekenstein-Hawking formula, which consequently tests the AdS/CFT correspondence at the subleading order., Comment: 34 pages, 1 figure; minor changes in v2; references added in v3, published version in JHEP

Abstract

The combined observation of gravitational and electromagnetic waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars marks the beginning of multimessenger astronomy with gravitational waves (GWs). The development of accurate gravitational waveform models is a crucial prerequisite to extract information about the properties of the binary system that generated a detected GW signal. In binary neutron star systems (BNS), tidal effects also need to be incorporated in the modeling for an accurate waveform representation. Building on previous work [Phys. Rev. D 96, 121501 (2017)], we explore the performance of inspiral-merger waveform models that are obtained by adding a numerical relativity (NR) based approximant for the tidal part of the phasing ($\mathrm{NRTidal}$) to existing models for nonprecessing and precessing binary black hole systems, as implemented in the LSC Algorithm Library Suite. The resulting BNS waveforms are compared and contrasted to a set of target waveforms which we obtain by hybridizing NR waveforms (covering the last $\ensuremath{\sim}10$ orbits up to the merger and extending through the postmerger phase) with inspiral waveforms calculated from 30 Hz obtained with a state-of-the-art effective-one-body waveform model. While due to the construction procedure of the target waveforms, there is no error budget available over the full frequency range accessible by advanced GW detectors, the waveform set presents only an approximation of the real signal. We probe that the combination of the self-spin terms and of the $\mathrm{NRTidal}$ description is necessary to obtain minimal mismatches ($\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.01$) and phase differences ($\ensuremath{\lesssim}1\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{rad}$) with respect to the target waveforms. We also discuss possible improvements and drawbacks of the $\mathrm{NRTidal}$ approximant in its current form.

Abstract

We perform a comparative study of the time dependence of the holographic quantum complexity of some space like singular bulk gravitational backgrounds. This is done by considering the two available notions of complexity, one that relates it to the maximal spatial volume and the other that relates it to the classical action of the Wheeler-de Witt patch. We calculate and compare the leading and the next to leading terms and find some universal features. The complexity decreases towards the singularity for both definitions, for all types of singularities studied. In addition the leading terms have the same quantitative behavior for both definitions in restricted number of cases and the behaviour itself is different for different singular backgrounds. The quantitative details of the next to leading terms, such as their specific form of time dependence, are found not to be universal. They vary between the different cases and between the different bulk definitions of complexity. Abstract

The mass of the graviton can be generated using a Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism with four scalar fields. We show that when one of these fields is costrained as in mimetic gravity, the massive gravity obtained is ghost free and consistent. The mass term is not of the Fierz-Pauli type. There are only five degrees of freedom and the sixth degree of freedom associated with the Boulware-Deser ghost is constrained and replaced by mimetic matter to all orders. Abstract

During a first St. Petersburg period Leonhard Euler, in his early twenties, became interested in the Basel problem: summing the series of inverse squares (posed by Pietro Mengoli in mid 17th century). In the words of Andre Weil (1989) "as with most questions that ever attracted his attention, he never abandoned it". Euler introduced on the way the alternating "phi-series", the better converging companion of the zeta function, the first example of a polylogarithm at a root of unity. He realized - empirically! - that odd zeta values appear to be new (transcendental?) numbers. It is amazing to see how, a quarter of a millennium later, the numbers Euler played with, "however repugnant" this game might have seemed to his contemporary lovers of the "higher kind of calculus", reappeared in the analytic calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, the most precisely calculated and measured physical quantity. Abstract

The 2D $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)^*$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be obtained from the 2D $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ theory with a twisted mass deformation. In this paper we construct the gravity dual theory of the 2D $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)^*$ supersymmetric $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory at the large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling limit using the 5D gauged supergravity. In the UV regime, this construction also provides the gravity dual of the 2D $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)^*$ $U(N)$ topological Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. Abstract

We compute the rotations, during a scattering encounter, of the spins of two gravitationally interacting particles at second-order in the gravitational constant (second post-Minkowskian order). Following a strategy introduced in Phys. Rev. D {\bf 96}, 104038 (2017), we transcribe our result into a correspondingly improved knowledge of the spin-orbit sector of the Effective One-Body (EOB) Hamiltonian description of the dynamics of spinning binary systems. We study macroscopically two dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric gauge theories constructed by compactifying the quiver gauge theories with eight supercharges on a product $\mathbb{T}^{d} \times \mathbb{R}^{2}_{\epsilon}$ of a $d$-dimensional torus and a two dimensional cigar with $\Omega$-deformation. We compute the universal part of the effective twisted superpotential. Abstract

We continue the exploration of the consistency of a modified-gravity theory that generalizes General Relativity by including a dynamical torsion in addition to the dynamical metric. The six-parameter theory we consider was found to be consistent around arbitrary torsionless Einstein backgrounds, in spite of its containing a (notoriously delicate) massive spin-2 excitation. At zero bare cosmological constant, this theory was found to admit a self-accelerating solution whose exponential expansion is sustained by a non-zero torsion background. The scalar-type perturbations of the latter torsionfull self-accelerating solution were recently studied and were found to preserve the number of propagating scalar degrees of freedom, but to exhibit, for some values of the torsion background some exponential instabilities (of a rather mild type). Here, we study the tensor-type and vector-type perturbations of the torsionfull self-accelerating solution, and of its deformation by a non-zero bare cosmological constant. We find strong, "gradient" instabilities in the vector sector. No tuning of the parameters of the theory can kill these instabilities without creating instabilities in the other sectors. Further work is needed to see whether generic torsionfull backgrounds are prone to containing gradient instabilities, or if the instabilities we found are mainly due to the (generalized) self-accelerating nature of the special de Sitter backgrounds we considered., 32 pages, 2 figures; four references added in the Introduction; more explanations on the structure of the action of torsion gravity; additional discussion of the crossing between the two branches of de Sitter-like solutions; to be published in Phys. Abstract

We present a theory of ghost-free massive gravity where the mass of the graviton is generated through the Brout-Englert-Higgs (BEH) mechanism and one of the four scalar fields used is that of mimetic gravity. The mass term is not of the Fierz-Pauli type and the constraint eliminates the Boulware-Deser ghost which is absent to all orders. We perform a detailed analysis using the methods of cosmological perturbation theory and consider quantum fluctuations of the degrees of freedom of massive graviton and mimetic matter. It is shown that for three of the degrees of freedom of the graviton of mass $m$ the nonlinear corrections become comparable to the linear terms already at a length scale of order $m^{-\frac{1}{2}}$. Thus, at smaller scales they become strongly coupled and the graviton remains with two transverse degrees of freedom which get strongly coupled only at Planck scale. The mimetic field behaves as cold particles of half of the graviton mass and could well explain the source of dark matter in our universe. Abstract

We study the metric perturbations induced by a classical spinning particle moving along a circular orbit on a Schwarzschild background, limiting the analysis to effects which are first order in spin. The particle is assumed to move on the equatorial plane and has its spin aligned with the $z$-axis. The metric perturbations are obtained by using two different approaches, i.e., by working in two different gauges: the Regge-Wheeler gauge (using the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli formalism) and a radiation gauge (using the Teukolsky formalism). We then compute the linear-in-spin contribution to the first-order self-force contribution to Detweiler's redshift invariant up to the 8.5 post-Newtonian order. We check that our result is the same in both gauges, as appropriate for a gauge-invariant quantity, and agrees with the currently known 3.5 post-Newtonian results., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure, revtex macros used

Abstract

The factorization and resummation approach of Nagar and Shah~[Phys.~Rev.~D~94 (2016), 104017], designed to improve the strong-field behavior of the post-Newtonian (PN) residual waveform amplitudes $f_{\ell m}$'s entering the effective-one-body, circularized, gravitational waveform for spinning coalescing binaries, is here improved and generalized to all multipoles up to $\ell=6$. For a test-particle orbiting a Kerr black hole, each multipolar amplitude is truncated at relative 6~post Newtonian (PN) order, both for the orbital (nonspinning) and spin factors. By taking a certain Pad\'e approximant (typically the $P^4_2$ one) of the orbital factor in conjuction with the inverse Taylor (iResum) representation of the spin factor, it is possible to push the analytical/numerical agreement of the energy fluxe at the level of $5\%$ at the last-stable-orbit for a quasi-maximally spinning black hole with dimensionless spin parameter $+0.99$. When the procedure is generalized to comparable-mass binaries, each orbital factor is kept at relative $3^{+3}$PN order, i.e. the 3PN comparable-mass terms are hybridized with higher PN test-particle terms up to 6PN relative order. The same Pad\'e resummation is used for continuity. By contrast, the spin factor is only kept at the highest comparable-mass PN-order currently available. We illustrate that the consistency between different truncations in the spin content of the waveform amplitudes is stronger in the resummed case than when using the standard Taylor-expanded form of Pan et al.~[Phys.~Rev.~D~83 (2011) 064003]. We finally introduce a method to consistently hybridize comparable-mass and test-particle information {\it also} in the presence of spin (including the spin of the particle), discussing it explicitly for the $\ell=m=2$ spin-orbit and spin-square terms., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

The equations for the general Darboux-Halphen system obtained as a reduction of the self-dual Yang-Mills can be transformed to a third-order system which resembles the classical Darboux-Halphen system with a common additive terms. It is shown that the transformed system can be further reduced to a constrained non-autonomous, non-homogeneous dynamical system. This dynamical system becomes homogeneous for the classical Darboux-Halphen case, and was studied in the context of self-dual Einstein's equations for Bianchi IX metrics. A Lax pair and Hamiltonian for this reduced system is derived and the solutions for the system are prescribed in terms of hypergeometric functions., Comment: Some content of this article overlaps with content of another article written previously by two of the authors: arXiv:1606.02910. We have also removed the error, expanding and writing it into a completely new form, several new results having been found. 14 pages

Abstract

In previous work, the first three authors conjectured that the ring of regular functions on a natural class of affine log Calabi-Yau varieties (those with maximal boundary) has a canonical vector space basis parameterized by the integral tropical points of the mirror. Further, the structure constants for the multiplication rule in this basis should be given by counting broken lines (certain combinatorial objects, morally the tropicalisations of holomorphic discs). Here we prove the conjecture in the case of cluster varieties, where the statement is a more precise form of the Fock-Goncharov dual basis conjecture. In particular, under suitable hypotheses, for each Y the partial compactification of an affine cluster variety U given by allowing some frozen variables to vanish, we obtain canonical bases for the ring of functions on Y extending to a basis for functions on U. Each choice of seed canonically identifies the parameterizing sets of these bases with integral points in a polyhedral cone. These results specialize to basis results of combinatorial representation theory. For example, by considering the open double Bruhat cell U in the basic affine space Y we obtain a canonical basis of each irreducible representation of SL_r, parameterized by a set which each choice of seed identifies with integral points of a lattice polytope. These bases and polytopes are all constructed essentially without representation theoretic considerations. Abstract

We provide an intersection-theoretic formula for the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of smooth curves. This formula reads purely in terms of Hodge integrals and, as a corollary, the standard calculus of tautological classes gives a new short proof of the Harer-Zagier formula. Our result is based on the Gauss-Bonnet formula, and on the observation that a certain parametrisation of the $\Omega$-class - the Chern class of the universal $r$-th root of the twisted log canonical bundle - provides the Chern class of the log tangent bundle to the moduli space of smooth curves. Being $\Omega$-classes by now employed in many enumerative problems, mostly recently found and at times surprisingly different from each other, we dedicate some work to produce an extensive list of their general properties: extending existing ones, finding new ones, and writing down some only known to the experts., Comment: 13 pages

Abstract

We present a comprehensive comparison of the spin-aligned effective-one-body (EOB) waveform model of Nagar et al. [Phys. Rev. D93, 044046 (2016)], informed using 40 numerical-relativity (NR) datasets, against a set of 149, $\ell=m=2$, NR waveforms freely available through the Simulation Extreme Spacetime (SXS) catalog. We find that, without further calibration, these EOBNR waveforms have unfaithfulness (at design Advanced-LIGO sensitivity and evaluated with total mass $M$ varying as $10M_\odot\leq M \leq 200M_\odot$) always below $1\%$ against all NR waveforms except for three outliers, that still never exceed the $3\%$ level; with a minimal retuning of the (effective) next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order spin-orbit coupling parameter for the non-equal-mass and non-equal-spin sector, that only needs three more NR waveforms, one is left with another two (though different) outliers, with maximal unfaithfulness of up to only $2\%$ for a total mass of $200M_\odot$. We show this is the effect of slight inaccuracies in the phenomenological description of the postmerger waveform of Del Pozzo and Nagar [arXiv:1606.03952] that was constructed by interpolating over only 40NR simulations. We argue that this is easily fixed by using either an alternative ringdown description (e.g., the superposition of quasi-normal-modes) or an improved version of the phenomenological representation. By analyzing a NR waveform with mass ratio $8$ and dimensionless spins $+0.85$ obtained with the BAM code, we conclude that the model would benefit from NR simulations specifically targeted at improving the postmerger-ringdown phenomenological fits for mass ratios $\gtrsim 8$ and spins $\gtrsim 0.8$., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

A novel approach for extracting gauge-invariant information about spin-orbit coupling in gravitationally interacting binary systems is introduced. This approach is based on the "scattering holonomy", i.e. the integration (from the infinite past to the infinite future) of the differential spin evolution along the two worldlines of a binary system in hyperboliclike motion. We apply this approach to the computation, at the first post-Minkowskian approximation (i.e. first order in $G$ and all orders in $v/c$), of the values of the two gyrogravitomagnetic ratios describing spin-orbit coupling in the Effective One-Body formalism. Abstract

We study the quantum fermionic billiard defined by the dynamics of a quantized supersymmetric squashed three-sphere (Bianchi IX cosmological model within D=4 simple supergravity). The quantization of the homogeneous gravitino field leads to a 64-dimensional fermionic Hilbert space. We focus on the 15- and 20-dimensional subspaces (with fermion numbers N_F=2 and N_F=3) where there exist propagating solutions of the supersymmetry constraints that carry (in the small-wavelength limit) a chaotic spinorial dynamics generalizing the Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz classical "oscillatory" dynamics. By exactly solving the supersymmetry constraints near each one of the three dominant potential walls underlying the latter chaotic billiard dynamics, we compute the three operators that describe the corresponding three potential-wall reflections of the spinorial state describing, in supergravity, the quantum evolution of the universe. It is remarkably found that the latter, purely dynamically-defined, reflection operators satisfy generalized Coxeter relations which define a type of spinorial extension of the Weyl group of the rank-3 hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra AE_3., Comment: 35 pages, 1 figure

In this work we present an analytical gravitational self-force calculation of the spin-orbit precession along an eccentric orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole, following closely the recent prescription of Akcay, Dempsey, and Dolan, giving results to six post-Newtonian orders expanded in small eccentricity through ${e}^{2}$. We then transcribe this quantity within the effective-one-body (EOB) formalism, thereby determining several new, linear-in-mass-ratio contributions in the post-Newtonian expansion of the spin-orbit couplings entering the EOB Hamiltonian. Namely, we determine the second gyrogravitomagnetic ratio ${g}_{{S}_{*}}(r,{p}_{r},{p}_{\ensuremath{\phi}})$ up to order ${p}_{r}^{2}/{r}^{4}$ included.

According to the Weak Equivalence Principle, all bodies should fall at the same rate in a gravitational field. The MICROSCOPE satellite, launched in April 2016, aims to test its validity at the $10^{-15}$ precision level, by measuring the force required to maintain two test masses (of titanium and platinum alloys) exactly in the same orbit. A non-vanishing result would correspond to a violation of the Equivalence Principle, or to the discovery of a new long-range force. Abstract

We study the correction of the energy spectrum of a gravitational quantum well due to the combined effect of the braneworld model with infinite extra dimensions and generalized uncertainty principle. The correction terms arise from a natural deformation of a semiclassical theory of quantum gravity governed by the Schr\"odinger-Newton equation based on a minimal length framework. The two fold correction in the energy yields new values of the spectrum, which are closer to the values obtained in the GRANIT experiment. This raises the possibility that the combined theory of the semiclassical quantum gravity and the generalized uncertainty principle may provide an intermediate theory between the semiclassical and the full theory of quantum gravity. Abstract

By post-Newtonian (PN) expanding the well-known, factorized and resummed, effective-one-body energy flux for circularized binaries we show that: (i) because of the presence of the resummed tail factor, the 4.5PN-accurate tails-of-tails-of-tails contribution to the energy flux recently computed by Marchand et al. [Class. Q. Grav. 33 (2016) 244003] is actually contained in the resummed expression; this is also the case of the the next-to-leading-order tail-induced spin-orbit term of Marsat et al. [Class. Q. Grav. 31 (2014) 025023]; (ii) in performing this expansion, we also obtain, for the first time, the explicit 3.5PN leading-order tail-induced spin-spin flux term; (iii) pushing the PN expansion of the (nonspinning) EOB flux up to 5.5PN order, we compute 4PN, 5PN and 5.5PN contributions to the energy flux, though in a form that explicitly depends on, currently unknown, 4PN and 5PN non-test-mass corrections to the factorized waveform amplitudes. Within this (parametrized) 4.5PN accuracy, we calculate the TaylorF2 approximant. Focusing for simplicity on the nonspinning case and using the numerical-relativity calibrated IMRPhenomD waveform model as benchmark, we demonstrate that it is possible to reproduce the derivative of the IMRPhenomD phase (say up to the frequency of the Schwarzschild last-stable-orbit) by flexing only a 4PN "effective" waveform amplitude parameter. A preliminary analysis also illustrates that similar results can be obtained for the spin-aligned case provided only the leading-order spin-orbit and spin-spin terms are kept. Our findings suggest that this kind of, EOB-derived, (parametrized), higher-order, PN approximants may serve as promising tools to construct Inspiral-Merger-Ringdown phenomenological models or even to replace the standardly used 3.5PN-accurate TaylorF2 approximant in searches of small-mass binaries., 11 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

We show that a partially massless graviton can propagate on a large set of spacetimes which are not Einstein spacetimes. Starting from a recently constructed theory for a massive graviton that propagates the correct number of degrees of freedom on an arbitrary spacetime, we first give the full explicit form of the scalar constraint responsible for the absence of a sixth degree of freedom. We then spell out generic conditions for the constraint to be identically satisfied, so that there is a scalar gauge symmetry which makes the graviton partially massless. These simplify if one assumes that spacetime is Ricci symmetric. In this paper we consider the enumeration of orientable and non-orientable chord diagrams. We show that this enumeration is encoded in appropriate expectation values of the $\beta$-deformed Gaussian and RNA matrix models. We evaluate these expectation values by means of the $\beta$-deformed topological recursion, and - independently - using properties of quantum curves. Abstract

Building on the analytical description of the post-merger (ringdown) waveform of coalescing, non-precessing, spinning, (BBHs) introduced in Phys. Rev. D 90, 024054 (2014), we propose an analytic, closed form, time-domain, representation of the $\ell=m=2$ gravitational radiation mode emitted after merger. This expression is given as a function of the component masses and dimensionless spins $(m_{1,2},\chi_{1,2})$ of the two inspiralling objects, as well as of the mass $M_{\rm BH}$ and (complex) frequency $\sigma_{1}$ of the fundamental quasi-normal mode of the remnant black hole. Our proposed template is obtained by fitting the post-merger waveform part of several publicly available numerical relativity simulations from the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes (SXS) catalog and then suitably interpolating over (symmetric) mass ratio and spins. We show that this analytic expression accurately reproduces ($\sim$~0.01 rad) the phasing of the post-merger data of other datasets not used in its construction. This is notably the case of the spin-aligned run SXS:BBH:0305, whose intrinsic parameters are consistent with the 90\% credible intervals reported by the parameter-estimation followup of GW150914 in Phys. Rev. Lett. 116 (2016) no.24, 241102. Using SXS waveforms as "experimental" data, we further show that our template could be used on the actual GW150914 data to perform a new measure the complex frequency of the fundamental quasi-normal mode so to exploit the complete (high signal-to-noise-ratio) post-merger waveform., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

We compute the (center-of-mass frame) scattering angle $\chi$ of hyperboliclike encounters of two spinning black holes, at the fourth post-Newtonian approximation level for orbital effects, and at the next-to-next-to-leading order for spin-dependent effects. We find it convenient to compute the gauge-invariant scattering angle (expressed as a function of energy, orbital angular momentum and spins) by using the Effective-One-Body formalism. Abstract

Starting at 3-loop order, the massive Wilson coefficients for deep-inelastic scattering and the massive operator matrix elements describing the variable flavor number scheme receive contributions of Feynman diagrams carrying quark lines with two different masses. In the case of the charm and bottom quarks, the usual decoupling of one heavy mass at a time no longer holds, since the ratio of the respective masses, $\eta = m_c^2/m_b^2 \sim 1/10$, is not small enough. Therefore, the usual variable flavor number scheme (VFNS) has to be generalized. The renormalization procedure in the two--mass case is different from the single mass case derived in \cite{Bierenbaum:2009mv}. We present the moments $N=2,4$ and $6$ for all contributing operator matrix elements, expanding in the ratio $\eta$. We calculate the analytic results for general values of the Mellin variable $N$ in the flavor non-singlet case, as well as for transversity and the matrix element $A_{gq}^{(3)}$. We also calculate the two-mass scalar integrals of all topologies contributing to the gluonic operator matrix element $A_{gg}$. As it turns out, the expansion in $\eta$ is usually inapplicable for general values of $N$. We therefore derive the result for general values of the mass ratio. From the single pole terms we derive, now in a two-mass calculation, the corresponding contributions to the 3-loop anomalous dimensions. We introduce a new general class of iterated integrals and study their relations and present special values. Abstract

We investigate certain properties of $\mathfrak{su}(N)$-valued two-dimensional soliton surfaces associated with the integrable $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma models constructed by the orthogonal rank-one Hermitian projectors, which are defined on the two-dimensional Riemann sphere with finite action functional. Several new properties of the projectors mapping onto one-dimensional subspaces as well as their relations with three mutually different immersion formulas, namely, the generalized Weierstrass, Sym-Tafel and Fokas-Gel'fand have been discussed in detail. Explicit connections among these three surfaces are also established by purely analytical descriptions and, it is demonstrated that the three immersion formulas actually correspond to the single surface parametrized by some specific conditions., 17 pages

Abstract

A technique for translating the classical scattering function of two gravitationally interacting bodies into a corresponding (effective one-body) Hamiltonian description has been recently introduced [Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 94}, 104015 (2016)]. Using this technique, we derive, for the first time, to second-order in Newton's constant (i.e. one classical loop) the Hamiltonian of two point masses having an arbitrary (possibly relativistic) relative velocity. The resulting (second post-Minkowskian) Hamiltonian is found to have a tame high-energy structure which we relate both to gravitational self-force studies of large mass-ratio binary systems, and to the ultra high-energy quantum scattering results of Amati, Ciafaloni and Veneziano. We derive several consequences of our second post-Minkowskian Hamiltonian: (i) the need to use special phase-space gauges to get a tame high-energy limit; and (ii) predictions about a (rest-mass independent) linear Regge trajectory behavior of high-angular-momenta, high-energy circular orbits. Ways of testing these predictions by dedicated numerical simulations are indicated. We finally indicate a way to connect our classical results to the quantum gravitational scattering amplitude of two particles, and we urge amplitude experts to use their novel techniques to compute the 2-loop scattering amplitude of scalar masses, from which one could deduce the third post-Minkowskian effective one-body Hamiltonian., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In a recent work, [Phys. Rev. D. 94, 104010 (2016)], hereafter Paper I, we have numerically studied different prescriptions for the dynamics of a spinning particle in circular motion around a Schwarzschild black hole. In the present work, we continue this line of investigation to the rotating Kerr black hole. We consider the Mathisson-Papapetrou formalism under three different spin-supplementary-conditions (SSC), the Tulczyjew SSC, the Pirani SSC and the Ohashi-Kyrian-Semerak SSC, and analyze the different circular dynamics in terms of the ISCO shifts and the frequency parameter ${x \equiv (M \Omega)^{2/3}}$, where $\Omega$ is the orbital frequency and $M$ is the Kerr black hole mass. Then, we solve numerically the inhomogeneous $(2+1)D$ Teukolsky equation to contrast the asymptotic gravitational wave fluxes for the three cases. Our central observation made in Paper I for the Schwarzschild limit is found to hold true for the Kerr background: the three SSCs reduce to the same circular dynamics and the same radiation fluxes for small frequency parameters but differences arise as $x$ grows close to the ISCO. For a positive Kerr parameter $a=0.9$ the energy fluxes mutually agree with each other within a $0.2\%$ uncertainty up to $x, Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 7 tables

Abstract

We compute a subset of three, velocity-independent four-loop (and fourth post-Newtonian) contributions to the harmonic-coordinates effective action of a gravitationally interacting system of two point-masses. We find that, after summing the three terms, the coefficient of the total contribution is rational, due to a remarkable cancellation between the various occurrences of $\pi^2$. This result, obtained by a classical field-theory calculation, corrects the recent effective-field-theory-based calculation by Foffa et al. [arXiv:1612.00482]. Besides showing the usefulness of the saddle-point approach to the evaluation of the effective action, and of x-space computations, our result brings a further confirmation of the current knowledge of the fourth post-Newtonian effective action. We also show how the use of the generalized Riesz formula [Phys. Rev. D 57, 7274 (1998)] allows one to analytically compute a certain four-loop scalar master integral (represented by a four-spoked wheel diagram) which was, so far, only numerically computed., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We study M-theory on a Calabi-Yau fourfold with a smooth surface $S$ of $A_{N-1}$ singularities. The resulting three-dimensional theory has a $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ gauge theory sector, which we obtain from a twisted dimensional reduction of a seven-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ gauge theory on the surface $S$. A variant of the Vafa-Witten equations governs the moduli space of the gauge theory, which, for a trivial $SU(N)$ principal bundle over $S$, admits a Coulomb and a Higgs branch. In M-theory these two gauge theory branches arise from a resolution and a deformation to smooth Calabi-Yau fourfolds, respectively. We find that the deformed Calabi-Yau fourfold associated to the Higgs branch requires for consistency a non-trivial four-form background flux in M-theory. The flat directions of the flux-induced superpotential are in agreement with the gauge theory prediction for the moduli space of the Higgs branch. We illustrate our findings with explicit examples that realize the Coulomb and Higgs phase transition in Calabi-Yau fourfolds embedded in weighted projective spaces. Abstract

In this paper we discuss the boson/vortex duality by mapping the (3+1)D Gross-Pitaevskii theory into an effective string theory in the presence of boundaries. Via the effective string theory, we find the Seiberg-Witten map between the commutative and the noncommutative tachyon field theories, and consequently identify their soliton solutions with $D$-branes in the effective string theory. We perform various checks of the duality map and the identification of soliton solutions. Abstract

On June 5, 1905 Poincar\'e presented a Note to the Acad\'emie des Sciences entitled "Sur la dynamique de l'\'electron" ("On the Dynamics of the Electron"). After briefly recalling the context that led Poincar\'e to write this Note, we comment its content. We emphasize that Poincar\'e's electron model consists in assuming that the interior of the worldtube of the (hollow) electron is filled with a positive cosmological constant. Abstract

We present an approach to evaluate the full operatorial Q-system of all $\mathfrak{u}(p,q|r+s)$-invariant spin chains with representations of Jordan-Schwinger type. In particular, this includes the super spin chain of planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory at one loop in the presence of a diagonal twist. Our method is based on the oscillator construction of Q-operators. The Q-operators are built as traces over Lax operators which are degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. For non-compact representations these Lax operators may contain multiple infinite sums that conceal the form of the resulting functions. We determine these infinite sums and calculate the matrix elements of the lowest level Q-operators. Transforming the Lax operators corresponding to the Q-operators into a representation involving only finite sums allows us to take the supertrace and to obtain the explicit form of the Q-operators in terms of finite matrices for a given magnon sector. Imposing the functional relations, we then bootstrap the other Q-operators from those of the lowest level. Abstract

We provide a complete classification of all abelian gauge invariant $p$-form theories with equations of motion depending only on the second derivative of the field---the $p$-form analogues of the Galileon scalar field theory. We construct explicitly the nontrivial actions that exist for spacetime dimension $D\leq11$, but our methods are general enough and can be extended to arbitrary $D$. We uncover in particular a new $4$-form Galileon cubic theory in $D\geq8$ dimensions. As a by-product we give a simple proof of the fact that the equations of motion depend on the $p$-form gauge fields only through their field strengths, and show this explicitly for the recently discovered $3$-form Galileon quartic theory., Comment: 17 pages; v2: references added

Abstract

In this paper we prove the smoothness of the moduli space of Landau-Ginzburg models. We formulate and prove a Tian-Todorov theorem for the deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models, develop the necessary Hodge theory for varieties with potentials, and prove a double degeneration statement needed for the unobstructedness result. We discuss the various definitions of Hodge numbers for non-commutative Hodge structures of Landau-Ginzburg type and the role they play in mirror symmetry. Abstract

We introduce the boundary length and point spectrum, as a joint generalization of the boundary length spectrum and boundary point spectrum in arXiv:1307.0967. We establish by cut-and-join methods that the number of partial chord diagrams filtered by the boundary length and point spectrum satisfies a recursion relation, which combined with an initial condition determines these numbers uniquely. This recursion relation is equivalent to a second order, non-linear, algebraic partial differential equation for the generating function of the numbers of partial chord diagrams filtered by the boundary length and point spectrum., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We study the partition function of the six-vertex model in the rational limit on arbitrary Baxter lattices with reflecting boundary. Every such lattice is interpreted as an invariant of the twisted Yangian. This identification allows us to relate the partition function of the vertex model to the Bethe wave function of an open spin chain. Abstract

In this article, the enumeration of partial chord diagrams is discussed via matrix model techniques. In addition to the basic data such as the number of backbones and chords, we also consider the Euler characteristic, the backbone spectrum, the boundary point spectrum, and the boundary length spectrum. Furthermore, we consider the boundary length and point spectrum that unifies the last two types of spectra. We introduce matrix models that encode generating functions of partial chord diagrams filtered by each of these spectra. Using these matrix models, we derive partial differential equations - obtained independently by cut-and-join arguments in an earlier work - for the corresponding generating functions., Comment: 42 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

On August 17, 2017 at 12-41:04 UTC the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors made their first observation of a binary neutron star inspiral. The signal, GW170817, was detected with a combined signal-to-noise ratio of 32.4 and a false-alarm-rate estimate of less than one per 8.0×104 years. We infer the component masses of the binary to be between 0.86 and 2.26 M, in agreement with masses of known neutron stars. Restricting the component spins to the range inferred in binary neutron stars, we find the component masses to be in the range 1.17-1.60 M, with the total mass of the system 2.74-0.01+0.04M. The source was localized within a sky region of 28 deg2 (90% probability) and had a luminosity distance of 40-14+8 Mpc, the closest and most precisely localized gravitational-wave signal yet. The association with the γ-ray burst GRB 170817A, detected by Fermi-GBM 1.7 s after the coalescence, corroborates the hypothesis of a neutron star merger and provides the first direct evidence of a link between these mergers and short γ-ray bursts. Subsequent identification of transient counterparts across the electromagnetic spectrum in the same location further supports the interpretation of this event as a neutron star merger. Abstract

The Jacobi metric derived from the line element by one of the authors is shown to reduce to the standard formulation in the non-relativistic approximation. We obtain the Jacobi metric for various stationary metrics. Finally, the Jacobi-Maupertuis metric is formulated for time-dependent metrics by including the Eisenhart-Duval lift, known as the Jacobi-Eisenhart metric., 22 pages

Abstract

In the present letter we indicate an extension of the pure gravity inverse scattering integration technique to the case when fermions (introduced on the base of supersymmetry) are present. In this way the integrability technique for simple ($N=1$) supergravity in two space-time dimensions coupled to the matter fields taking values in the Lie algebra of $E_{8\left( +8\right) }$ group is developed. This theory contains matter living only in one Weyl representation of $SO\left( 16\right) $ and represents the reduction to two dimensions of the three-dimensional simple supergravity constructed in [1]. Our spectral linear problem use superspace and covers the complete set of principal bosonic and fermionic equations of motion. This linear system, as in pure gravity, contains only the first order poles with respect to the spectral parameter. The procedure of constructing the exact super-solitonic solutions is outlined., Version 1611.02924v1 was withdrawn due to groundless assumption on the existence of the relation (43). In footnote 7 it was stressed that its proof remains to be seen. Analysis showed that such relation indeed is doubtful. Then the extension of the pure gravity inverse scattering method to superspace surely can cover only the simple integrable supergravity with E8(8) symmetry

Abstract

We study algebraic structures ($L_\infty$ and $A_\infty$-algebras) introduced by Gaiotto, Moore and Witten in their recent work devoted to certain supersymmetric 2-dimensional massive field theories. We show that such structures can be systematically produced in any number of dimensions by using the geometry of secondary polytopes, esp. their factorization properties. In particular, in 2 dimensions, we produce, out of a polyhedral "coefficient system", a dg-category $R$ with a semi-orthogonal decomposition and an $L_\infty$-algebra $\mathfrak g$. We show that $\mathfrak g$ is quasi-isomorphic to the ordered Hochschild complex of $R$, governing deformations preserving the semi-orthogonal decomposition. This allows us to give a more precise mathematical formulation of the (conjectural) alternative description of the Fukaya-Seidel category of a Kahler manifold endowed with a holomorphic Morse function., 75 pages, 28 figures
