Abstract

Astronauts are spending longer periods locked up in ships or stations for scientific and exploration spatial missions. The International Space Station (ISS) has been inhabited continuously for more than 20 years and the duration of space stays by crews could lengthen with the objectives of human presence on the moon and Mars. If the environment of these space habitats is designed for the comfort of astronauts, it is also conducive to other forms of life such as embarked microorganisms. The latter, most often associated with surfaces in the form of biofilm, have been implicated in significant degradation of the functionality of pieces of equipment in space habitats. The most recent research suggests that microgravity could increase the persistence, resistance and virulence of pathogenic microorganisms detected in these communities, endangering the health of astronauts and potentially jeopardizing long-duration manned missions. In this review, we describe the mechanisms and dynamics of installation and propagation of these microbial communities associated with surfaces (spatial migration), as well as long-term processes of adaptation and evolution in these extreme environments (phenotypic and genetic migration), with special reference to human health. Abstract

UMR BFP - Equipe Mollicutes; International audience; Despite great innovative and technological promises, nanoparticles (NPs) can ultimately exert an antibacterial activity by affecting the cell envelope integrity. This envelope, by conferring the cell its rigidity and protection, is intimately related to the mechanical behavior of the bacterial surface. Depending on their size, surface chemistry, shape, NPs can induce damages to the cell morphology and structure among others, and are therefore expected to alter the overall mechanical properties of bacteria. Although Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) stands as a powerful tool to study biological systems, with high resolution and in near physiological environment, it has rarely been applied to investigate at the same time both morphological and mechanical degradations of bacteria upon NPs treatment. Consequently, this study aims at quantifying the impact of the silica NPs (SiO2-NPs) on the mechanical properties of E. coli cells after their exposure, and relating it to their toxic activity under a critical diameter. Cell elasticity was calculated by fitting the force curves with the Hertz model, and was correlated with the morphological study. SiO2-NPs of 100 nm diameter did not trigger any significant change in the Young modulus of E. coli, in agreement with the bacterial intact morphology and membrane structure. On the opposite, the 4 nm diameter SiO2-NPs did induce a significant decrease in E. coli Young modulus, mainly associated with the disorganization of lipopolysaccharides in the outer membrane and the permeation of the underlying peptidoglycan layer. The subsequent toxic behavior of these NPs is finally confirmed by the presence of membrane residues, due to cell lysis, exhibiting typical adhesion features.

Abstract

International audience; The switching time is one of the key parameters used to assess the performance of an electrochromic material or device. In spite of its importance, there is currently no standard for how this parameter is defined, and as a result, it is difficult to compare switching time data between different research groups, and to quantify and assess reported improvements. We propose a standard method for reporting electrochromic switching times, based on straightforward experimental fittings resulting in an analytical expression that can directly correlate obtainable optical contrast values with their corresponding switching times. This analytical expression makes it possible to unambiguously define the performance of an electrochromic material or device using two parameters: a full-switch contrast and a time constant.

Abstract

A new experimental facility has been designed and constructed to study driven granular media in a low-gravity environment. This versatile instrument, fully automatized, with a modular design based on several interchangeable experimental cells, allows us to investigate research topics ranging from dilute to dense regimes of granular media such as granular gas, segregation, convection, sound propagation, jamming, and rheology—all without the disturbance by gravitational stresses active on Earth. Here, we present the main parameters, protocols, and performance characteristics of the instrument. Abstract

International audience; A new organic-inorganic hybrid with the formula (NH3C3H6CO2H)2CdCl4 has been crystallized and investigated by X-ray diffraction. Structural investigations highlight a first-order reversible structural phase transition occurring within the range (290–370 K) between a chiral (phase II) and non-centrosymmetric (Phase I) crystal packing. This strong structural reorganization is the result of conformational changes in the organic chains accompanied by a decrease in octahedral distortion. The accurate crystallographic analysis illustrates the crucial role of organic moieties. The experimental energy gap value (3.65 eV) is in good agreement with the theoretical value obtained by density functional theory.

Abstract

International audience; Dense ceramics of MnSO4 composition have been successfully densified at 400 °C in only 5 min under a uniaxial pressure of 400 MPa, using Spark Plasma Sintering technique. Since the stable form of MnSO4 in ambient atmosphere is its hydrate MnSO4·H2O, crystallizing in a different space group, dehydration is required to reach a purely anhydrous phase. In situ dehydration during Spark Plasma Sintering allows to lower both sintering temperature and time. Applied pressure strongly influences dehydration step and therefore is a key parameter to tune densification, so far as to obtain a dense MnSO4·H2O ceramic. The presence of a reversible phase transition to a β-MnSO4 high temperature form seems to influence the dehydration temperature under pressure, and likely drives the sintering mechanisms. The high densification obtained, beyond 95% of theoretical density, added to the preservation of the structural and physical properties of MnSO4 after sintering allowed to perform reliable and reproducible measurements showing a dielectric anomaly associated to the magnetic transition, and the hysteretic behaviour of capacitance versus magnetic field, which is a clue for an intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling in MnSO4.

Abstract

International audience; The acoustic vibrations of metal−dielectric core−shell nanoparticles (Ag@SiO2 and Au@SiO2) are investigated using ultrafast pump−probe spectroscopy. The experimental results are in good agreement with calculations of the period of the breathing vibration of the core−shell particles. The transition from one overtone of the breathing mode to the next one as the size of the silica shell increases is observed for slightly thinner SiO2 shells than previously reported. Our results confirm that this optical technique permits the determination of the quality of the mechanical contact at the metal dielectric interface. This is of major importance for many applications, in particular because it modifiessignificantly the thermal conductivity at the nanoscale. Moreover, we observed that for two different synthesis routes, poor contact core−shell samples could sneak in among good sample series based on the same metallic core particles. This confirms the suitability of this all optical and noninvasive technique to obtain information hardly reachable by other means such as electron microscopy or absorption spectroscopy.

Abstract

International audience; A new iron phosphate Li0.75Mn1.50Fe1.75(PO4)3 has been prepared by the flux method and its structure was characterized from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes as an alluaudite type structure, characterized by the A(2)A(2)’A(1)A(1)’A(1)”M(1)M(2)2(PO4)3 general formula with a = 12.002(9) Å, b = 12.509(9) Å, c = 6.404(7) Å, β = 115.07(7)° in the monoclinic C2/c space group. The 3D framework consists of infinite chains of edge-sharing M(2)2O10 dimers and M(1)O6 octahedra connected by phosphate tetrahedra leading to two sets of hexagonal tunnels. The Li+ and Mn2+ ions partially occupy one of them, the other tunnel being empty. The Mössbauer spectroscopy confirmed the occurrence of only Fe3+ ions in octahedral environment. Electrochemical cycling tests in Li cells were performed using Li0.75MnII1.50FeIII1.75(PO4)3 powder as electrode material. Only a small amount of Li+ ions can be reversibility deintercalated/intercalated corresponding to a capacity as low as 30 mAh/g with a 3.2 V average voltage. Moreover, a strong polarization due to low electronic and ionic conductivities is observed. The presence of Mn2+ ions in the same tunnel as Li+ probably hinders a good Li+ ionic diffusion.

Abstract

International audience; The phosphor excitation by blue laser diode and an influence of its irradiation on the material were investigated. Two types of materials were elaborated to perform these experiments—yellow phosphor (YAG) and green phosphor mixed with nitride phosphor (GYAG). These phosphors were packaged into silicone plates, having different thickness and concentration in silicon resin. The results from exciting the phosphor by blue laser present that emission of converted light increases when concentration and thickness increase. Also, the dependency of these two parameters on optical power shows certain behavior. Subsequently, the concentration and thickness were replaced by particle number in sample. It revealed that the dependency of the particle numbers on the optical power can replace the conventional parameters as thickness or concentration. Results show that correlated color temperature finds it dependency on number of particles also. In addition, it turned out, that for each of the material, there might exist an optimal particle number for the maximum luminous power. Finally, the influence of the irradiation of blue laser diode on the materials was investigated. After intensive irradiation for 30 min, we observed that the efficiency of light conversion decreases. It can be caused by damages made by laser on particles. Results show parts of nitride (650 nm) conversion decrease less than yellow or green phosphor. Less affection of irradiation can be explained by nitride being very covalent material, more resistant to modification. Also, we found that there is no fundamental modification of material structure because of no changing in spectrum shape of converted light.

Abstract

International audience; There has been keen interest for years in the research of all-solid-state transmittance-type electrochromic (EC) devices due to their various applications especially in ‘‘smart windows’’. A step forward has been taken in the successful preparation of full multilayered devices with enlarged optical contrast and fast switching response. However, limited durability remains a severe issue. Upon cycling, EC devices suffer from decline of charge capacity as well as optical modulation while the detailed degradation mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate unambiguous ion-trapping evidence to interpret the charge density decay of the EC device induced using various voltammetric cycling protocols, namely long-term cycling and accelerated cycling. Pronounced comparable ion trapping occurs in cathodically colored WO3 films whatever the cycling procedure is, suggesting the existence of the trapping ‘‘saturation’’ phenomenon. From second-ion-mass-spectroscopy analysis, the 7Li+/184W+ ratio in the degraded WO3 films is more than 100 while it is almost zero in the as-prepared films. In contrast, for anodically colored NiO, a larger number of trapped cations is determined in the long-term cycled films than in the accelerated ones. In combination with X-ray-photoelectron-spectroscopy, variable bonding energies indicate that the ions are trapped at different types of sites, depending on the cycling procedure, and they can reside in the structural channels or break the network chains to form new chemical bondings, thus resulting in a significant color difference. In addition, a clear upward trend in the trapped Li concentration along with depth is observed. All our findings provide a deep insight into the degradation phenomenon taking place in electrochromic films as well as in full devices and offer valuable information for the understanding of micro mechanisms.

Abstract

International audience; The visualization of the microstructure change and of the depth of lithium transport inside a monolithic ElectroChromic Device (ECD) is realized using an innovative combined approach of Focused Ion Beam (FIB), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) and Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GDOES). The electrochemical and optical properties of the all-thin-film inorganic ECD glass/ITO/WO3/LiTaO3/NiO/ITO, deposited by magnetron sputtering, are measured by cycling voltammetry and in situ transmittance analysis up to 11 270 cycles. A significant degradation corresponding to a decrease in the capacity of 71% after 2500 cycles and of 94% after 11 270 cycles is reported. The depth resolved microstructure evolution within the device, investigated by cross-sectional cutting with FIB, points out a progressive densification of the NiO layer upon cycling. The existence of irreversible Li ion trapping in NiO is illustrated through the comparison of the compositional distribution of the device after various cycles 0, 100, 1000, 5000 and 11 270. SIMS and GDOES depth profiles confirm an increase in the trapped Li content in NiO as the number of cycles increases. Therefore, the combination of lithium trapping and apparent morphological densification evolution in NiO is believed to account for the degradation of the ECD properties upon long term cycling of the ECD.

International audience; Phosphate polyanionic compounds have been used for several technological applications and are especially widespread in battery research. Na3V2(PO4)2F3 is a material that holds great promise as a positive electrode for Na-ion batteries. We study here the Ag+/Na+ ion exchange that is possible due to the high ionic mobility of Na+ in this material. A nearly complete ion exchange was obtained and we report the crystal structure of the new orthorhombic phase Ag3V2(PO4)2F3, determined by synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Silver occupies the same crystallographic sites as sodium and, except for the differences caused by steric effects, Ag3V2(PO4)2F3 preserves the symmetry constraints already present in the parent compound Na3V2(PO4)2F3. We also followed the evolution of the crystal structure upon heating/cooling, to observe an order/disorder transition analogous to the one already reported for Na3V2(PO4)2F3, but occurring at a significantly higher temperature.

Abstract

A new R&D on lithium molybdate scintillators has begun within a project CLYMENE (Czochralski growth of Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crYstals for the scintillating boloMeters used in the rare EveNts sEarches). One of the main goals of the CLYMENE is a realization of a Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystal growth line to be complementary to the one recently developed by LUMINEU in view of a mass production capacity for CUPID, a next-generation tonne-scale bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. In the present paper we report the investigation of performance and radiopurity of 158-g and 13.5-g scintillating bolometers based on a first large-mass (230 g) Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystal scintillator developed within the CLYMENE project. In particular, a good energy resolution (2--7 keV FWHM in the energy range of 0.2--5 MeV), one of the highest light yield (0.97 keV/MeV) amongst Li$_2$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers, an efficient alpha particles discrimination (10$\sigma$) and potentially low internal radioactive contamination (below 0.2--0.3 mBq/kg of U/Th, but 1.4 mBq/kg of $^{210}$Po) demonstrate prospects of the CLYMENE in the development of high quality and radiopure Li$_2$MoO$_4$ scintillators for CUPID., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

International audience; Extensive research on nanosized ZnO has proven that its optical properties are challenging to control due to a number of possible defects producing various emissions in the visible range. Our group proposed a low-temperature, supercritical-fluid-driven synthesis of isotropic nanosized particles that exhibit a unique and unprecedentedly pure excitonic emission, comparable to that of single crystals. The present article reports the growth mechanism at the origin of the unexpectedly pure excitonic emission as well as a more detailed study of its optical properties at liquid helium temperatures. The ZnO phase is obtained via the thermal decomposition of an intermediate ZnO2 phase. No bulk defect luminescence is detected, and the synthesis route leaves a “ZnO2-like” surface able to neutralize the formation of surface defects, which can contribute to visible emissions. The luminescence measurements were performed at liquid helium temperature to enable the identification of excitons. The investigation of the photoluminescence properties confirms a strong excitonic emission in the UV region with no visible band and sheds light on a phonon coupling with the E2 high vibrational mode.

Abstract

International audience; Potassium vanadium oxyfluoride phosphate of composition KVPO4F0.5O0.5 was modified by a carbon coating to enhance its electrochemical performance. Two distinct methods were used, first, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using acetylene gas as a carbon precursor and second, an aqueous route using an abundant, cheap, and green precursor (chitosan) followed by a pyrolysis step. The formation of a 5 to 7 nm-thick carbon coating was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and it was found to be more homogeneous in the case of CVD using acetylene gas. Indeed, an increase of the specific surface area of one order of magnitude, low content of C sp2, and residual oxygen surface functionalities were observed when the coating was obtained using chitosan. Pristine and carbon-coated materials were compared as positive electrode materials in potassium half-cells cycled at a C/5 (C = 26.5 mA g–1) rate within a potential window of 3 to 5 V vs K+/K. The formation by CVD of a uniform carbon coating with the limited presence of surface functions was shown to improve the initial coulombic efficiency up to 87% for KVPFO4F0.5O0.5-C2H2 and to mitigate electrolyte decomposition. Thus, performance at high C-rates such as 10 C was significantly improved, with ∼50% of the initial capacity maintained after 10 cycles, whereas a fast capacity loss is observed for the pristine material.

Abstract

International audience; The process of convectively self-assembling particles in films suffers from low reproducibility due to its high dependency on particle concentration, as well as a variety of interactions and physical parameters. Inhomogeneities in flow rates and instabilities at the air–liquid interface are mostly responsible for reproducibility issues. These problems are aggravated by adding multiple components to the dispersion, such as binary solvent mixtures or surfactant/polymer additives, both common approaches to control stick-slip behavior. When an additive is used, not only does it change the surface tension, but also the viscosity and the evaporation rate. Worse yet, gradients in these three properties can form, which then lead to Marangoni currents. Here, we use a series of alcohols to study the role of viscosity independently of other solvent properties, to show its impact on stick-slip behavior and interband distances. We show that mixtures of glycerol and alcohol or poly(acrylic acid) and alcohol lead to more complex patterning. Marangoni currents are not always observed in co-solvent systems, being dependent on the rate of solvent evaporation. To produce homogeneous particle assemblies and control stick-slip behavior, gradients must be avoided, and the surface tension and viscosity need both be carefully controlled.

Abstract

International audience; Among candidates at the positive electrode of the next generation of Li-ion technology and even beyond post Li-ion technology as all-solid-state batteries, spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) is one of the favorites. Nevertheless, before its integration into commercial systems, challenges still remain to be tackled, especially the stabilization of interfaces with the electrolyte (liquid or solid) at high voltage. In this work, a simple, fast, and cheap process is used to prepare a homogeneous coating of Al2O3 type to modify the surface of the spinel LNMO: the supercritical fluid chemical deposition (SFCD) route. This process is, to the best of our knowledge, used for the first time in the battery field. Significantly improved performance was demonstrated vs those of bare LNMO, especially at high rates and for highly loaded electrodes.

Abstract

International audience; M-ion batteries (M = Li, Na, K ...) positive electrode materials most often operate through the reversible oxidation of transition-metal ions. In complex materials involving many transition metals or many redox centers, understanding the sequence in which they participate to the reaction is not trivial but is often necessary to explain the electrochemical properties. Mixed anion vanadium phosphates, such as KVPO4F0.5O0.5, are known to contain two different redox entities that are V3+O4F2 and V3+O5F “ionic” entities on the one hand and {V4+═O}O5 and {V4+═O}O4F “covalent” vanadyl-type units on the other hand. However, their participation to the redox mechanism occurring during the charge of this material has never been studied. Here, we use V K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy to unveil the redox mechanism of KVPO4F1–yOy (y = 0, 0.5, 1), performing data analysis via a chemometric approach. With XAS being very sensitive to the oxidation state and bond length, it was found that the ionic V3+–F units oxidize at a lower potential than the covalent {V4+═O} ones, which is surprising considering the high electronegativity of fluoride anions but is consistent with the redox potential observed for KVPO4F and KVOPO4. Further, ab initio calculations and ex situ X-ray diffraction analyses allowed an atomistic description of the redox mechanism with the sequential oxidation of the cis V site before the trans V site in KVPO4F upon charge. Finally, the complete atomically resolved redox mechanism of KVPO4F0.5O0.5 is proposed.

Abstract

International audience; The well-known synthesis of the two polymorphs of the {[Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4)}n spin crossover coordination polymer is explored with new template-free methods that allow a control over the local synthetic conditions. A “one-pot” synthesis approach is developed, in which the solid reactants are mixed together before the addition of the solvent, which is expected to generate instantaneous supersaturation conditions favoring the nucleation of particles over their growth. In a second method, the addition of ultrasound pulses promotes the appearance of local “hot spots” that affect the local temperature and allow exploring a different region of the concentration–temperature phase diagram, leading to an increase in the phase purity of the product. These two syntheses are compared to the classical method in which the reactants are first dissolved in separate solutions before being mixed. The use of a one-pot synthesis, with or without ultrasound pulses, induces a downsizing of the particle size by a factor of 500 on their volume. The addition of ultrasound pulses allows moving from a mixture of polymorphs I and II of this compound to the pure phase I. These approaches open the way to more studies on the control over the size or phase purity in such molecular compounds, without the use of any surfactant.

Abstract

International audience; A comprehensive description of the electrochemical mechanisms of the Prussian blue analogue (PBA) K1.67Mn0.65Fe0.35[Fe(CN)6]0.92•0.45H2O is obtained by combining several complementary ex situ and operando physicochemical characterisation techniques. This particular PBA, which shows very good electrochemical performance as a cathode material in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), undergoes three successive redox reactions during the (de-)potassiation that are hereby identified by ex situ 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and operando Mn and Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. These reactions come along with notable modifications of the crystal structure, which are followed in real time by operando X-ray diffraction. The correlation of these results, interpreted with the support of chemometric methods, also reveals the limitations of this PBA, probably related to the deactivation of the Mn undergoing extensive reversible Jahn-Teller distortion during cycling as well as possible dissolution in the electrolyte. These results underline that optimisation of the chemical composition of PBAs is a crucial step towards the preparation of reliable and stable PBA-based cathodes for PIBs.

Abstract

International audience; Resistance upset welding is successfully applied to Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) steel fuel cladding. Due to the strong correlation between the mechanical properties and the microstructure of the ODS steel, this study focuses on the consequences of the welding process on the metallurgical state of the PM2000 ODS steel. A range of process parameters is identified to achieve operative welding. Characterizations of the microstructure are correlated to measurements recorded during the welding process. The thinness of the clad is responsible for a thermal unbalance, leading to a higher temperature reached. Its deformation is important and may lead to a lack of joining between the faying surfaces located on the outer part of the join which can be avoided by increasing the dissipated energy or by limiting the clad stick-out. The deformation and the temperature reached trigger a recrystallization phenomenon in the welded area, usually combined with a modification of the yttrium dispersion, i.e., oxide dispersion, which can damage the long-life resistance of the fuel cladding. The process parameters are optimized to limit the deformation of the clad, preventing the compactness defect and the modification of the nanoscale oxide dispersion.

Abstract

Phase transition is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature, science and technology. In general, the phase separation from a homogeneous phase depends on the depth of the temperature quench into the two-phase region. Earth’s gravity masks the details of phase separation phenomena, which is why experiments were performed under weightlessness. Under such conditions, the pure fluid sulphur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) near its critical point also benefits from the universality of phase separation behavior and critical slowing down of dynamics. Initially, the fluid was slightly below its critical temperature with the liquid matrix separated from the vapor phase. A 0.2 mK temperature quench further cooled down the fluid and produced a double phase separation with liquid droplets inside the vapor phase and vapor bubbles inside the liquid matrix, respectively. The liquid droplets and the vapor bubbles respective distributions were well fitted by a lognormal function. The evolution of discrete bins of different radii allowed the derivation of the transition rates for coalescence processes. Based on the largest transition rates, two main coalescence mechanisms were identified: (1) asymmetric coalescences between one small droplet of about 20 μ m and a wide range of larger droplets; and (2) symmetric coalescences between droplets of large and similar radii. Both mechanisms lead to a continuous decline of the fraction of small radii droplets and an increase in the fraction of the large radii droplets. Similar coalescence mechanisms were observed for vapor bubbles. However, the mean radii of liquid droplets exhibits a t 1 / 3 evolution, whereas the mean radii of the vapor bubbles exhibit a t 1 / 2 evolution.

Abstract

International audience; We report a single-crystal neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin 1/2 cuprate Cu3Bi(SeO3)2O2Cl, complemented by dielectric and electric polarization measurements. The study clarifies a number of open issues concerning this complex material, whose frustrated interactions on a kagomelike lattice, combined with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, are expected to stabilize an exotic canted antiferromagnetic order. In particular, we determine the nature of the structural transition occurring at 115 K, the magnetic structure below 25 K resolved in the updated space group, and the microscopic ingredients at the origin of this magnetic arrangement. This was achieved by an analysis of the measured gapped spin waves, which signifies the need for an unexpected and significant anisotropic exchange beyond the proposed Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Finally, we discuss the multiferroic properties of this material with respect to the space group symmetries.

Abstract

This paper reports on the development of a technology involving $^{100}$Mo-enriched scintillating bolometers, compatible with the goals of CUPID, a proposed next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Large mass ($\sim$1~kg), high optical quality, radiopure $^{100}$Mo-containing zinc and lithium molybdate crystals have been produced and used to develop high performance single detector modules based on 0.2--0.4~kg scintillating bolometers. In particular, the energy resolution of the lithium molybdate detectors near the $Q$-value of the double-beta transition of $^{100}$Mo (3034~keV) is 4--6~keV FWHM. The rejection of the $\alpha$-induced dominant background above 2.6~MeV is better than 8$\sigma$. Less than 10~$\mu$Bq/kg activity of $^{232}$Th ($^{228}$Th) and $^{226}$Ra in the crystals is ensured by boule recrystallization. The potential of $^{100}$Mo-enriched scintillating bolometers to perform high sensitivity double-beta decay searches has been demonstrated with only 10~kg$\times$d exposure: the two neutrino double-beta decay half-life of $^{100}$Mo has been measured with the up-to-date highest accuracy as $T_{1/2}$ = [6.90 $\pm$ 0.15(stat.) $\pm$ 0.37(syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{18}$~yr. Both crystallization and detector technologies favor lithium molybdate, which has been selected for the ongoing construction of the CUPID-0/Mo demonstrator, containing several kg of $^{100}$Mo., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, 8 tables; submitted to EPJC

Abstract

International audience; Tailored tellurite-glasses possess excellent thermo-viscous ability and linear/nonlinear optical properties. Here, bringing together the merits of these materials with fiber optic technology, we report on the first tellurite-based core-clad dual-electrode composite fiber made by direct, homothetic preform-to-fiber thermal co-drawing. The rheological and optical properties of the selected glasses allow both to regulate the metallic melting flow and to manage the refractive index core/clad waveguide profile. We demonstrate the electrical continuity of the electrodes over meters of fiber. We believe the drawing of architectures merging electrical and optical features in a unique elongated wave-guiding structure will enable to develop new in-fiber functionalities based on hybrid electric/optic nonlinear effects.

Abstract

International audience; Phase transition in fluids is ubiquitous in nature and has important applications in areas such as the food industry for volatile oils’ extraction or in nuclear plants for heat transfer. Fundamentals are hampered by gravity effects on Earth. We used direct imaging to record snapshots of phase separation that takes place in sulfur hexafluoride, SF6, under weightlessness conditions on the International Space Station (ISS). The system was already at liquid-vapor equilibrium slightly below the critical temperature and further cooled down by a 0.2-mK temperature quench that produced a new phase separation. Both full view and microscopic views of the direct observation cell were analyzed to determine the evolution of the radii distributions. We found that radii distributions could be well approximated by a lognormal function. The fraction of small radii droplets declined while the fraction of large radii droplets increased over time. Phase separation at the center of the sample cell was visualized using a 12× microscope objective, which corresponds to a depth of focus of about 5 μ m. We found that the mean radii of liquid droplets exhibit a t1/3 evolution, in agreement with growth driven by Brownian coalescence. It was also found that the mean radii of the vapor bubbles inside the liquid majority phase exhibit a t1/2 evolution, which suggest a possible directional motion of vapor bubbles due to the influence of weak remaining gravitational field and/or a composition Marangoni force.

Abstract

International audience; A thermal sensor was used to better understand parameters which influenced the interaction between a laser beam and a 0.5% Mn-doped ZnAl 2.2 O 4 material, especially the laser defocusing parameter. The optical properties of the material depend on whether the Mn 2+ ions occupy octahedral and/or tetrahedral sites depending on thermal history. A screen printing process is performed to obtain material thin films. Laser irradiation of the films was carried out (patterning 1 cm length single laser track) with different z defocusing heights. Luminescence properties around laser tracks led to the thermal history determination at the micrometer scale. It was shown that spatial thermal gradients defined at the micrometer scale perpendicularly to the borders of the laser tracks could be semiquantified for different z conditions. Laser defocusing leads to decrease thermal gradients as confirmed by thermal modeling studies.

Abstract

International audience; Reversible chemical reactions are the most common mechanism storing electrochemical energy in M-ion batteries (M = Li, Na, K....). At the positive electrode, these transformations consist in the solid-state oxidation or reduction of transition metal ions going along with the reversible (de)intercalation of an alkali cation from the crystal structure. X-ray spectroscopies are among the most suitable tools to unveil and monitor these reactions. The interpretation of experimental spectra, however, is not trivial. This is particularly true in V-based positive electrodes since the variety of oxidation states of vanadium as well as its coordination and bonding geometries may lead to complex spectroscopic features that call for ab initio modeling to understand the spectra. Here we show not only that V L2,3-edge X-ray Raman spectra can effectively be modeled by a full ab initio approach but also that the empirically obtained Hamiltonian parameters can reproduce shape and intensity of the experimental spectra from a given coordination geometry. In a broader context, our study shows that inexpensive empirical calculations provide highly reliable information and help solve the electronic structure of transition metal oxides compounds, which governs the electrochemical behavior in M-ion batteries. The promising results shown here underline the efficiency of this strategy for X-ray spectroscopy data analysis, which can be generalized and extended to the wider family of vanadium phosphate-based polyanionic compounds. Such an approach can in principle be extended to any transition metal-based material.

Abstract

International audience; This article focuses on understanding the link between the morphologies and specific surfaces of well-known birnessites with electrochemical performance by studying the surface reactivity of each material. Our study is especially dedicated to show the impact of the material’s surface on the faradaic and pseudocapacitive mechanisms involved in the energy storage of the supercapacitors. For this purpose, a multiscale study was carried out on three birnessites, nonprotonated (Na-MnO2, K-MnO2 and HT-MnO2) and protonated (HNa-MnO2, HK-MnO2 and HHT-MnO2), to ensure the investigation of the surface reactivity on birnessites for each step of the nanocomposite conception based on birnessite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the morphology of the materials. Coupling X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and SO2 gas probe adsorption are especially devoted to determine the nature of active sites and the electronic structure of the material’s surface. Thus, we provide evidence that the surface properties, such as specific surface area and surface active sites, are linked to the electrochemical mechanism (faradaic or pseudocapacitive) of storage depending on the scan rate. We show that the site concentration determined by XPS can be directly linked to the contribution of the pseudocapacitive mechanism observed at low and moderate scan rates. As the capacitive mechanism is discriminated at a high scan rate, its contribution is related to the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface. The largest specific surface is obtained for HK-MnO2 with its eroded veils (85 m2/g). Redox reactivity was evaluated from XPS quantification comparing the S/M values, i.e., atom % of S/atom % of Mn. HT-MnO2, its protonated derivative HHT-MnO2, and Na-MnO2 exhibit the largest redox reactivity, with, respectively, S/M values of 0.49, 0.46, and 0.31, according to their smooth platelet morphology. Except for the high temperature birnessite, the change of morphology after protonation decreases the concentration of redox active sites while the BET surface increases. This work shows that HK-MnO2 presents the best performance, 46.6 F/g at 100 mV/s, to be used as an electrode material in supercapacitor storage systems.

Abstract

International audience; Ceftriaxone, a third generation cephalosporin, has a wide antibacterial spectrum that has good CNS penetration, which makes it potentially suitable for initial treatment of severe neonatal pediatric infections providing suitable formulation. We evaluated its physicochemical and technical characteristics to assess its potential for development as a non-parenteral dosage form. As ceftriaxone is marked only for injectable use, these data are not available. Using HPLC and Karl Fischer titration, sensitivity of ceftriaxone to water, feasibility and impact of pharmaceutical processes and compatibility with common pharmaceutical excipients were assessed. X-ray diffraction studies gave deeper insight into the mechanisms involved in degradation. Chemometrical analysis of near infrared spectra enabled classification of ceftriaxone powder according to exposure conditions or processes applied. The results showed that ceftriaxone was not highly hygroscopic, could be processed in all climatic zones, but should be packaged protected against humidity. Controlling water presence in formulation was shown critical, as ceftriaxone degraded in the presence of water content above 2.4% w/w. To improve flowability, a critical parameter for dry dosage form development, granulation (wet and dry techniques, providing complete drying and moderate force compaction respectively) was shown feasible. Compression with moderate forces was possible, but grinding and high compression forces significantly affected long term ceftriaxone stability and should be avoided. Based on these results, development of ceftriaxone non-parenteral solid or liquid non-aqueous forms appears feasible.

Abstract

BFP - Equipe Mollicutes; International audience; An electrochemical biosensor, based on an amplification method using nanoparticles, is being developed for bacteria detection. Firstly, silica nanoparticles with different sizes were synthesized and studied in interaction with Escherichia coli cells for their potential toxicity, by atomic force microscopy and viability tests. A critical diameter in the range of 50-70 nm was found under which nanoparticles triggered drastic membrane damage even leading to cell lysis. Secondly, harmless nanoparticles were used in combination with polyelectrolytes as a transducer. A two steps spin coating protocol enabled (i) to immobilize a polyelectrolytes multilayer and (ii) to adsorb a 100 nm – NPs solution at 1g.L-1. Lastly, we plan to conjugate these nanoparticles with antibodies specific to Escherichia coli for their selective and sensitive detection through an electrochemical sensor.

Abstract

International audience; Tailored silver-containing zinc-phosphate glasses possess excellent thermoviscous ability and optical properties. Beyond they have proven to form a favorable matrix for the direct laser writing of photoluminescent and nonlinear patterns. Here, bringing together the merits of these materials with fiber optic technology, the first photosensitive, photowritable silver-containing glass ribbon fibers are reported. These novel devices are thermally scaled-down in a homothetic fashion from a macroscopic preform to produce tens-of-meters of continuous structure. It is demonstrated that luminescence properties of the native glass are preserved after the shaping process. Furthermore it is established that the unique fiber's flat geometry allows for the convenient, accurate laser writing of complex luminescent silver clusters patterns within the glass matrix. It is believed that the drawing of silver-containing zinc-phosphate glasses could lead to a decisive breakthrough in the field of photosensitive fibers. They would offer a promising platform for the design of highly efficient sensing devices based on amplified optical processes effects, for metamaterials or as fundamental bricks for photonics.

Abstract

International audience; Porous bioglass monoliths have been processed by hydrothermal hot pressing (HyHP) from sol-gel and melt-derived bioglass powders of composition (in mol %): SiO2–CaO–P2O5 (55.0-40.0-5.0) and SiO2–CaO–Na2O–P2O5 (47.2-26.4-23.8-2.6), respectively. An open porosity of >70% ever reached in 3D structures is reported for monoliths issued from sol-gel powders. Dissolution studies were performed in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 1–30 days. The monoliths were analysed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to observe the formation of an apatite-like layer and elemental concentration of SBF was evaluated using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). A higher kinetics in the development of apatite layer was observed for sol-gel derived monoliths. This result is explained by the high surface areas of the nanosized sol-gel powders and the possibility of HyHP to create large porosity (mesoporous monoliths) and retain large surface areas. HyHP is also effective in processing 3D-bioglass structures with porosity gradient by co-sintering powders of different size.

Abstract

International audience; The layered oxide LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 is a very attractive positive electrode material, as shown by good reversible capacity, chemical stability and cyclability upon long range cycling in Li-ion batteries and, hopefully, in a near future, in all-solid-state batteries. Three samples with variable primary particle sizes of 240 nm, 810 nm and 2.1 µm in average and very similar structures close to the ideal 2D layered structure (less than 2% Ni2+ ions in Li+ sites) were obtained by coprecipitation followed by solid-state reaction at high temperature. The electrochemical performances of the materials were evaluated in a conventional organic liquid electrolyte in Li-ion batteries and in a gel electrolyte in all-solid-state batteries. The positive electrode/electrolyte interface was analysed by X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy in order to determine its composition and the extent of the degradation of the lithium salt and the carbonate solvents after cycling, taking into account the changes in particle size of the positive electrode material and the nature of the electrolyte.

Abstract

International audience; The Aurivillius layered compounds with predominant fraction of paramagnetic transition metals are an emerging playground for discovery of magnetoelectric or multiferroic compounds. This aim was recently achieved by incorporating Fanions in the perovskite layer of the (Bi2O2)(CoF4) compound, only described so-far in a disordered model (unit cell : ap, ap, c). Here we report the investigation on the representative compounds (Bi2O2)(MF4) (M = Fe, Ni) using single crystal, synchrotron, neutron and electron diffraction. These reveal that the crystallographic average cell (2xap, 2xap, c) is orthorhombic, polar and accompanied by versatile (in)commensurate modulations. The supercell model was fully refined for (Bi2-xO2)(FeF4) (q = (0, ½, 0)) in the P2111 polar space group with transverse Fe-displacements relative to q. Bi-deficiency is compensated by a mixed Fe 2.5+ valence, but, the ideal stoichiometry is preserved for (Bi2O2)(NiF4). Both compounds are antiferromagnetic below TN = 89 K (Fe) and 45 K (Ni) with moments lying in the (ac) plane and a weak ferromagnetic component along the b-axis. DFT calculations validate a strongly anisotropic distribution of magnetic exchanges (Jab/Jc > 10). A broad anomaly on the dielectric constant at TN and a polarization loop at room temperature were obtained on (Bi2-xO2)(FeF4) single crystals, revealing multiferroism with magneto electric couplings.

Abstract

International audience; Within density functional theory, the equations of state for cubic perovskite (c-pv) and hypothetic orthorhombic perovskite (o-pv GdFeO3-type) and post-perovskite (ppv) forms of ThTaN3 are obtained. The decreasing volume and stabilizing energy indicate pressure enabled transitions: c-cpv → o-pv → ppv. From electronic structure analysis the chemical system is found insulating in the c-pvground state form with ~ 1eV band gap and semi-conducting for the ppv due to increased covalence. The chemical bonding properties show that Th and Ta bondings with the 2 N sites are selectively differentiated and reinforced for Ta–N bond within ppv form. This is the consequence of the corner as well as edge sharing octahedra characterizing ppv while pv structures have only corner sharing octahedra. It is the first case of potential post-perovskite nitride. ThTaN3: Projected charge density (for 4 fu) onto basal plane: (a) cubic perovskite, (b) orthorhombic perovskite and (c) post-perovskite. Red, green and blue areas are relevant to strong, medium and low localization of density.

Abstract

The technique known as 4D-STEM has recently emerged as a powerful tool for the local characterization of crystalline structures in materials, such as cathode materials for Li-ion batteries or perovskite materials for photovoltaics. However, the use of new detectors optimized for electron diffraction patterns and other advanced techniques requires constant adaptation of methodologies to address the challenges associated with crystalline materials. In this study, we present a novel image processing method to improve pattern matching in the determination of crystalline orientations and phases. Our approach uses sub-pixelar adaptative image processing to register and reconstruct electron diffraction signals in large 4D-STEM datasets. By using adaptive prominence and linear filters such as mean and gaussian blur, we are able to improve the quality of the diffraction pattern registration. The resulting data compression rate of 103 is well-suited for the era of big data and provides a significant enhancement in the performance of the entire ACOM data processing method. Our approach is evaluated using dedicated metrics, which demonstrate a high improvement in phase recognition. Our results demonstrate that this data preparation method not only enhances the quality of the resulting image but also boosts the confidence level in the analysis of the outcomes related to determining crystal orientation and phase. Additionally, it mitigates the impact of user bias that may occur during the application of the method through the manipulation of parameters., 22 pages (13 pages SI), 7 figures (10 figures SI)

Abstract

Temperature and oxygen partial pressure (PO2) of nuclear oxide fuels are the main parametersgoverning both their thermochemical evolution in reactor and the speciation of volatile fissionproducts such as Cs, I or Te. An innovative way to limit the risk of cladding rupture by corrosionunder irradiation consists in buffering the oxygen partial pressure of the fuel under operation in a PO2domain where the fission gas are harmless towards Zr clad, by using solid redox buffers as additives.Niobium, with its NbO2/NbO and Nb2O5/NbO2 redox couples has been found to be a promisingcandidate to this end. A manufacturing process of a buffered UO2 fuel, doped with niobium has beenoptimized, in order to fulfill usual specifications (density, microstructure). The experimental study ofthe UO2-NbOx system has shown the existence of a liquid phase between UO2 and NbOx at 810°C,which was not reported in the literature. The characterization of Nb containing phases present in UO2both in solid solution and as precipitates has lead us to propose a solubility thermodynamic model ofniobium in UO2 at 1700°C. An extensive study of the niobium precipitates shows the co-existence inthe fuel of NbO2 and NbO as major phases, together with small amounts of metallic Nb. The coexistenceof niobium under two oxidation states inside the fuel is a key element of demonstration of apossible in-situ buffering effect, which is likely to impact some properties of the material that aredependent upon PO2, such as densification. These results confirm the promising potential of oxygenbuffered fuels as regard to their performance in reactor., La température et la pression partielle d’oxygène (PO2) constituent les paramètres majeurs contrôlantles évolutions thermochimiques en réacteur des combustibles nucléaires de type oxyde, et notammentla spéciation des produits de fission potentiellement corrosifs (Cs, I, Te). Pour limiter les risques derupture de la gaine en Zr par corrosion, une solution innovante consiste à imposer au combustible defonctionner dans un domaine de PO2 où les espèces chimiques des gaz de fission sont inoffensives, pardopage in-situ avec un tampon oxydo-réducteur solide. Le niobium, avec ses couples redoxNbO2/NbO et Nb2O5/NbO2, a été identifié comme le candidat le plus prometteur. Un procédé defabrication d’un combustible dopé niobium répondant à cet objectif et conforme aux spécificationsd’usage (densité, microstructure) a été optimisé. L’étude expérimentale du système UO2-NbOx a révélél’existence à 810°C d’une phase liquide entre UO2 et NbO2, non identifiée à ce jour. La caractérisationdes phases solides et en solution du niobium nous a conduit à proposer un modèle thermodynamiquede solubilité du dopant dans UO2 à 1700°C. Une étude approfondie de la spéciation du niobiumprécipité a permis d’identifier la présence simultanée dans le matériau des phases majeures NbO2 etNbO, ainsi que Nb en moindre teneur. La coexistence du niobium sous deux degrés d’oxydationdifférents constitue un élément-clé de démonstration d’un possible effet tampon in-situ, dont l’impactest observé sur certaines propriétés du combustible dépendantes de la PO2, la densification notamment.Les résultats confirment le potentiel prometteur des combustibles tamponnés en PO2 au regard de sesperformances en réacteur.

Abstract

International audience; The medium Mn steels are a topic of interest from both practical and scientific point of view. Many studies were focused on the microstructure characterization, but only some of them addressed the mechanisms of austenite formation and stabilization. Hence, there are still remaining questions regarding the link between the optimum retained austenite fraction and stability and the austenite formation including both the morphological and kinetics aspects. In this work, different ART annealing treatments were performed on a cold rolled 0.1C – 4.7Mn (wt.%) steel. SEM and TEM observations as well as XRD and magnetic measurements were done to characterize the resulting microstructures. Microstructure evolution was analyzed as a function of soaking time: precipitation and dissolution of cementite; austenite nucleation, growth and stabilization. The experimental observations were compared with the predictions from thermodynamic calculations. Based on the obtained results, a mechanism of austenite formation and stabilization during ART annealing is proposed.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, we present the first crystal growth of cubic Tb2O3 single crystals by a controlled atmosphere flux method which uses a heavy metal free solvent working at less than half the melting temperature of this sesquioxide. Cubic millimeter-sized crystals extracted from as-grown boules are phase (powder XRD) and chemically (GDMS) pure and exhibit a Verdet constant in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges, which is at least three times higher than that of a commercial Tb3Ga5O12 (TGG) crystal. The 1.36 mm thick crystals display a transmission coefficient higher than 77% over the 525 nm–1.38 μm spectral range. The absorption spectrum, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on the single crystals confirm the absence of detectable Tb4+ cations and other impurities.

Abstract

International audience; We used a direct imaging technique to investigate concentration fluctuations enhanced by thermal fluctuations in a ternary mixture of methanol (Me), cyclohexane (C), and partially deuterated cyclohexane (C*) within 1mK above its consolute critical point. The experimental setup used a low-coherence white-light source and a red filter to visualize fluctuation images. The red-filtered images were analyzed off-line using a differential dynamic microscopy algorithm that allowed us to determine the correlation time, τ, of concentration fluctuations. From τ, we determined the mutual mass diffusion coefficient, D, very near and above the critical point of Me-CC* mixtures. We also numerically estimated both the background and critical contributions to D and compared the results against our experimental values determined from τ. We found that the experimental value of D is close to the prediction based on Stokes-Einstein diffusion law with Kawasaki’s correction.

Abstract

The elaboration of the last generation of metal supported IT-SOFCs by physical surface deposition processes is really challenging. Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS) process appears to be well adapted to build the porous anode layer [1] whereas Reactive Magnetron Sputtering (RMS) technique is suitable to deposit thin and dense layer. In the present work, we have deposited a Ni-YSZ anode by APS on porous metallic supports (ITM) produced by PLANSEE SE. Then, a thin YSZ electrolyte film was applied by RMS. Details about the elaboration of the half cell could be found in a previous work [2]. Various strategies have been followed to deposit the cathode layer on top of the previously deposited anode and electrolyte coatings. The Mixed Ionic and Electronic Conductor K2NiF4 structured material presents interesting electrocatalytic properties [3] allowing its utilization as cathode layer. Recent studies deal with the use of thin layers as cathodes in IT-SOFCs [4]. Therefore, RMS process was also evaluated to deposit a thin La2NiO4 layer (LNO) according to already optimized operating conditions [5]. In order to compare the efficiency of this dense layer as an individual cathode or a bonding cathode layer, the complete IT-SOFC building was elaborated by replacing and/or adding a screen-printed La2NiO4 coating (SP LNO). This layer was developed and optimized in ICMCB laboratory and has shown interesting performances in LNO/GDC/LNO half cells [6]. GDC diffusion barrier layers were deposited by RMS in order to limit the deleterious interaction between active layers in use. Different cells with RMS LNO, SP LNO, and RMS LNO + SP LNO were produced and tested in a complete cell bench at 973 K. Impedance Spectroscopy and Voltametry measurements were performed on these samples to assess their electrochemical characteristics and performances. The electrochemical resistances of these cells are too high and their performances are still lower than the literature ones. Analyses of the samples after the electrochemical tests permit to identify the density of the RMS LNO layer as the limiting factor lowering the cathodic electrochemical reaction. The sintering step performed on complete cells with SP LNO deteriorates the layers deposited by RMS as well as the metallic support explaining these performances. Abstract

International audience; The layered oxide LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 is a very attractive positive electrode material, as shown by good reversible capacity, chemical stability, and cyclability upon long-range cycling in Li-ion batteries and, hopefully, in the near future, in all-solid-state batteries. A large panel of synthesis conditions were explored in order to tailor the size of the primary particles for powders showing structures close to the ideal 2D layered structure (i.e., with less than 3.8% Ni2+ ions in the Li+ sites). Materials with primary particle sizes ranging from 170 nm to 2 μm were obtained. Their electrochemical performance in Li-ion batteries and surface reactivity were characterized in different cycling conditions, as a function of the primary particle size. A significant impact on the performance and reactivity was observed, with obviously better reversible capacity and cyclability for the materials with primary particles ranging between 200 and 400 nm. The analysis of the solid electrolyte interphase formed at the interface between the positive electrode and the electrolyte has shown that larger particles had a larger proportion of lithium salt degradation products, induced by the larger amount of Li2CO3 at their surface. It was also shown that the degradation of the lithium salt was favored at higher cycling rate, whereas that of the organic solvents is a little more favored in larger potential windows with a higher cutoff voltage.

Abstract

International audience; Exploring and tailoring new high energy density positive electrode materials is still a challenge for alkali-ion batteries. In this work, we synthesized the mixed anion phases KVPO4F1-yOy (y = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) and determined their crystallographic and electronic structures by combining synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the vanadium K edge, and 31P MAS NMR coupled with density functional theory calculations. These experiments confirmed that the substitution of F- for O2- anions occurs as a solid solution across the whole composition domain. The local environments of vanadium ions are complex and diverse since the cis and trans octahedra undergo different distortions in the presence of a vanadyl bond. The simultaneous existence of ionic VIII-F bonds and covalent (VIV=O)2+ vanadyl type entities is strongly affecting the electrochemical properties and potassium deinsertion/insertion mechanisms upon cycling. Ultimately, KVPO4F0.5O0.5 appears as a promising positive electrode material due to its high capacity (105 mAh·g-1), working potential (4.2 V vs K+/K), and sloping electrochemical curve.

Abstract

International audience; The present study focuses on an alternative structured oxygen electrode for solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC). La2NiO4+δ nickelate, LNO, was selected with respect to its mixed electronic and ionic conductivity and its good chemical stability. Complete single cells were built using screen printing of LNO and LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3 (LNF) layers on a standard hydrogen electrode supported half cell consisting of a porous NiO-YSZ layer, a dense 8YSZ electrolyte layer and a thin interlayer of GDC. The LNO cells polarization curves under various anodic flows of H2O/H2 (90/10) show excellent performances compared to the commercial LSCF (La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-x) based cells. The steam conversion ratio SC increases from around 40% to 80% when the gas flow decreases from 36 to 12 NmL min-1 cm-2. With a degradation rate of 1.5% 1,000 hrs-1 after 500 hrs operating time (i =-0.5 A cm-2) at 800 °C, using a medium H2O/H2 (90/10) gas flow of 24 NmL min-1 cm-2 , LNO oxygen electrode shows higher durability than the state of the art LSCF oxygen electrode. Energy efficiency analysis confirms the dependency of the total efficiency with the current density and gas flow allowing us to suggest optimized conditions for reaching targets of commercial H2 production.

Abstract

International audience; Yttrium mono- and di-silicates are excellent candidate materials for Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBC), to protect Ceramic-Matrix Composites (CMC). A large distribution of microstructures can be generated by varying the duration of sintering, the particle size distribution of the precursor and/or the deposition method. In the present work, investigations of the corrosion resistance of yttrium silicate coatings with various microstructures in the high temperature range, under different oxidizing environments are reported. An original experimental methodology has allowed quantifying the influence of the microstructure (especially grain size and grain boundary surface area) on properties such as ionic conductivity, resistance to oxygen diffusion, volatilization rate and surface recession, and showing that they directly affect their protection efficiency against oxidation. Based on these results, guidelines for the design of an optimized yttrium silicate EBC featuring microstructural and compositional variations are proposed.

Abstract

International audience; Erbium luminescence has been investigated in niobium borophosphate glass. A correlation between luminescence intensity at 1532 nm, OH absorption and the structure of the glass network was established as a function of the niobium oxide concentration. An increase of the radiative efficiency corresponding to 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 (4f–4f) transition of Er3+ ions has been observed for niobium richest glasses. The modification of the Er3+ ions site is analyzed as a function of the niobium concentration. A Judd–Ofelt analysis has been applied to emphasize the structural change. An increase of the up conversion was also measured as the niobium oxide content increases.

Abstract

The effect of grain size on the dielectric properties of Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) ceramics is investigated. Attrition milling is chosen to obtain nanometre particle size from micrometre particle size powders. Fine grained ceramics are obtained by hot uniaxial pressing (HUP). Additionally, the present study is focused on the effect of the nature of milling balls on loss tangent and permittivity. For that, three kinds of balls are tested: calcia, yttria or ceria stabilised zirconia balls. The properties of these samples are evaluated in the range of MHz. The balls induce an involuntary doping of powders which modifies the dielectric properties, especially the Curie temperature and loss tangent.
