Abstract: International audience; Hydroxyl groups of several industrial grade lignins are esterified thanks to palladium-catalyzed hydroesterification reactions with CO and olefins, fatty esters or 1,3-butadiene. The reaction is efficient, salt-free and allows introducing aliphatic chains to lignin through ester linkage. Technical and modified lignins are characterized by NMR, IR, SEC and thermal properties are evaluated by DSC. The esterified lignins show modified glass transition temperatures that depend on the substitution degree of the hydroxyl groups and on the nature of the aliphatic chains that have been introduced. The implementation of this catalysis also opens up the possibility of inserting new reactive functionalities such as esters or unsaturations from abundant and/or biobased reactants.

Abstract: EMC Europe 2019, European Conference on Electromagnetic Compatibility, Barcelone, ESPAGNE, 02-/09/2019 - 06/09/2019; This paper presents an analyze of the susceptibility of the LTE physical layer in presence of jamming signals. Commercial jammers are often characterized by the frequency bands that they cover. The jamming signal is generally a frequency-sweeping signal which sweeps quickly and periodically the frequency band, with a fixed sweep period (SP). According to the jammer model, the frequency band, the power and the sweep period can be different. In this communication, we study the potential impact of a jamming signal according to its power and its sweep period in order to analyse the disturbing mechanisms. The quality of the LTE uplink is analyzed through the measurements of three parameters: Error Vector Magnitude (EVM), Occupied BandWidth (OBW) and Adjacent Channel Leakage-power Ratio (ACLR).

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a simplified analytical formulation that uses Lagrangian Energy Approach to predict air and underwater blast response of air-backed simply-supported circular steel plates. Triangular and exponential pressure profiles are considered for air and underwater blast loading respectively. Calculation of the response is divided into two stages. In the first stage, maximum impulsive velocity is determined by assum-ing that the plate has negligible deformation and then by using the conservation of linear momentum for air blast and Taylor’s one-dimensional analytical model for underwater blast. In the second stage of calculation, elastic deformation is obtained by applying the initial conditions determined from the first stage, also taking into account the rotatory inertia and water-added inertia effect. The obtained analytical solutions are tested with various plate aspect ratios as well as various loading levels and the results are compared with those from non-linear finite element explicit simulations. It is found that the proposed formulations correlate well with the finite element results giving only 5–20% discrepancy provided that the plate deflections are supposed to remain small compared to its thickness. Finally, the advantages and limitations of the present method are discussed.

En particulier, les services offerts à bord des trains doivent apporter un bon niveau de confort aux passagers. Dans ce contexte, les opérateurs veulent permettre un accès à internet de qualité à bord des trains, qui permettrait aux passagers d'optimiser le temps passé à bord des trains. Le réseau 4G offre une possibilité d'accès à internet. Cependant, le transport ferroviaire étant un transport de masse, le nombre de passagers limite les possibilités d'accès à internet par cette technologie. Ainsi, la solution envisagée est une connexion 4G entre le sol et le train puis un transfert par un point d'accès WiFi à bord des voitures. Cependant, les antennes 4G qui seraient situées en toiture des trains pourraient recevoir les interférences produites par le contact caténaire-pantographe. Ainsi, cet article propose d'étudier la susceptibilité de ces communications 4G aux interférences transitoires produites par ce contact glissant.

Abstract: International audience; This paper analyses the electromagnetic (EM) wavescattering from an object buried between two random roughinterfaces. We present a rigorous numerical EM model basedon the boundary integral equation method that separates thedifferent sensed media, which is discretized by the method ofmoments. The resulting linear system is resolved by a fast methodcalled GPILE (Generalized Propagation Inside Layer Expansion),which makes it possible to reduce the complexity of the inversionof the impedance matrix and to isolate the different contributionsto the overall scattering process. This method is then appliedto a roadway sensed by GPR, with a view to calculating itstime-domain response. The practical objective of this analysisis to study the impact of an embedded object inside a complexmultilayered medium on the GPR signal.

Abstract: International audience; Abstract Because of their effectiveness and adaptability, impinging jets have found their way into a host of applications ranging from cooling turbine blades, to heat management of electronic systems or even lowering the temperature of a hot cup of coffee in the morning. With constantly increasing demand for efficient and compact cooling systems in certain industries, such as the aerospace or electronics industries, variations on the textbook-setup of an impinging jet have been studied over the years. One such variation introduces a periodic disturbance into the jet that can have an effect on both the structure of flow and the thermal boundary layer at the target surface. In what follows is a short overview of studies having used pulsed jets, often in tandem with other modifications, to try and improve heat transfer. Special attention was also given to the methods by which the periodic disturbance can be produced since they involve setups of different levels of complexity and having different implementation costs.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we present an efficient numerical method to calculate the frequency and time responses of the field scattered by an object buried between two random rough surfaces for a 2-D problem. This method is called Generalized PILE (GPILE) method because it extends the PILE method which considers only two surfaces or an object buried under a surface. The GPILE method solves the Maxwell equations rigourously by using a simple matrix formulation. The obtained results have a straightforward physical interpretation and allow us to investigate the influence of the object buried between the two rough surfaces. We distinguish the primary echo of the upper surface, the multiple echoes coming from the lower surface, and those arising from the object. The GPILE method is applied to simulate the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) signal at nadir. The resulting time response helps the user to detect the presence of the object buried between the two random rough surfaces.

Abstract: The R-Min robot is an intrinsically safe parallel manipulator dedicated to pick-and-place operations. The proposed architecture is based on a five-bar mechanism, with additional passive joints in order to obtain a planar seven-bar mechanism with two degrees of underactuation, allowing the robot to reconfigure in case of a collision. A preload bar is added between the base and the end-effector to constrain the additional degrees-of-freedom. This article presents an analysis of the workspace and of the safety performances of the R-Min robot, and it compares them with those of the five-bar mechanism, in order to evaluate the benefits of introducing underactuation in a parallel architecture to obtain intrinsically safer robots. The geometrico-static model of the R-Min robot is formulated as an optimization problem. The direct and inverse kinemato-static models are derived from the geometrico-static model and they allow to express the singularity conditions of the R-Min robot. An analysis of the singularity loci is carried out among the robot’s workspace. A controller based on the dynamic model is proposed and experimentally validated on a prototype of the R-Min robot. Finally, the safety performances of the R-Min robot are evaluated experimentally and they are compared with that of an equivalent five-bar mechanism, using the maximum impact force as a safety criteria in accordance with recent international standards.

Maisons-Alfort : Anses, 115 p.; Dans de nombreux domaines comme celui de l’agroalimentaire, les nanomatériaux manufacturés sont utilisés pour leurs propriétés propres à la nano-échelle (propriétés optiques, mécaniques, etc.) ainsi que pour leur importante surface spécifique. Les nanomatériaux manufacturés peuvent être ajoutés volontairement en tant qu’additifs alimentaires ou en tant qu’additifs technologiques dans la formulation des matériaux au contact des denrées alimentaires. Les nanomatériaux ne s’inscrivent pas dans une réglementation spécifique, mais sont régis par diverses réglementations sectorielles déjà existantes (CE n°258/971, UE n°1169/20112, UE n°10/20113 , etc.). La question de l’harmonisation sur le plan réglementaire fait partie des enjeux et préoccupations soulevés par des organisations de la société civile, principalement des organisations non gouvernementales (ONG), quant aux nanomatériaux en général et dans l’alimentation en particulier. La coexistence de définitions hétérogènes d’un nanomatériau au sein de ces réglementations sectorielles contribue à entretenir des confusions, notamment par l’interprétation des différents termes employés. Dans ce contexte, le groupe de travail (GT) de l’Anses « nano et alimentation » a établi, dans le cadre de son expertise, une qualification du terme « nanomatériau manufacturé » (Anses 2020) afin de préciser le champ de l’analyse. Abstract: International audience; This paper focuses on the characterisation of the electrochemical behaviour of a martensitic stainless steel in 0.1 M NaCl + 0.04 M Na2SO4 solution and is a part of a study devoted to crevice corrosion resistance of stainless steels. Polarisation curves and electrochemical impedance measurements were obtained for different experimental conditions in bulk electrolyte. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to analyse the passive films. At the corrosion potential, the stainless steel was in the passive state and the corrosion process was controlled by the properties of the passive film formed during air exposure. During immersion in the deaerated solution, the passive film was only slightly modified, whereas it was altered both in composition and thickness during immersion in the aerated solution. After cathodic polarisation of the stainless steel electrode surface, the oxide film was almost totally removed and the surface appeared to be uniformly active for oxygen reduction. The new passive film, formed at the corrosion potential, was enriched with iron species and less protective. Impedance diagrams allowed the characterisation of both the oxide film (high-frequency range) and the charge transfer process (low-frequency range).

Abstract: openaire: EC/H2020/814753/EU//FLARE SOLAS2020 damage stability regulations are based on probabilistic damage distributions. Those originate from the pooled analysis of collision accidents across a fleet with bias towards cargo ships. This paper introduces a method that accounts for collision-based crashworthiness on ship damage distributions. The method reshapes statistical SOLAS damage distributions for a given ship or structural details for a reference ship section and her reinforced version. Damage reductions may differ depending on ship characteristics and operational scenarios. To mitigate this, a high number of collision scenarios was simulated using the super-element method. It is shown that risk control in terms of damage reduction over the whole range of damages is possible by adding a double hull or by deck reinforcement. Damage reduction is quantified by damage stability analysis of a cruise vessel. It is concluded that installing a double hull on ship vulnerable zones leads to increased A-index.

Abstract: International audience; Today, in Electric Railways, the old DC supply systems are reaching their limits. To improve their efficiency and increase railroad traffic, a new DC Electrification has recently been proposed at 9-kV. It is now necessary to prepare the migration of infrastructure and rolling stock, using Power-Electronic-Transformers (PETs), for adaptation to this voltage level. For this application, high efficiency and reduced volume are essential. This paper clearly demonstrates that it is now possible to achieve compact, high-power, isolated DC-DC converters using 3.3-kV SiC-MOSFET power modules with high efficiency. After a preliminary study based on simulations, the paper focuses on characterization and implementation of elementary isolated DC-DC converters. The proposed topology is a series-resonant converter rated for a nominal power of 300-kW at 1.8-kV. First, laboratory testing using an “opposition-method” is used to evaluate the elementary converters up to their nominal power using both electrical and thermal measurements to accurately determine losses and efficiency. At the nominal output power, an efficiency of 98.93% is obtained. This is quite remarkable for an isolated DC-DC converter operating under 1.8-kV with a switching frequency of 15-kHz. Finally, two elementary isolated DC/DC converters are associated in ISOP configuration (Input Seriesed/Output Paralleled) in order to achieve a 3-kV/1.5-kV PET with a nominal power of 600-kW as a prelude to the final 9-kV/1.5-kV power conversion.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, a closed-form analytical solution procedure is proposed to solve the coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) equations that involve the first-order Doubly Asymptotic Approximation (DAA1) formulation. An efficient method comprised of the nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) scheme is applied. First of all, analytical equations are developed to analyze the response of a rigid mass-spring oscillator in an air-backed condition when it is subjected to a plane shock exponential wave coming from a far-field underwater explosion. After validating the results with LS-DYNA/USA (DAA1), these equations are extended to determine the response of a two-dimensional, simply-supported rectangular plate, and then tested on the isotropic and orthotropic plates within a small deflection regime. Parametric studies are also performed by varying the load decay times, peak pressures, as well as the aspect ratios of the plate. Finally, the advantages and limitations of the proposed formulae are exposed along with suggestions for the future work.

Abstract: International audience; Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) have a broad spectrum of applications, especially in sensing. However, deposition methods of sensitive layers can be controlled locally through electrodeposition unlike other conventional methods, such as drop-casting and atmospheric-pressure plasma. Employing this method, we experimentally demonstrate the local electrodeposition of PEDOT: PSS on a structured active gold surface. We investigate the response of a piezoelectric transducer at 215MHz, by exploiting shear-horizontal (SH) surface waves of the ST-cut quartz substrate. The sensor responses were then tested under acetone, methanol, isopropanol and water vapor gases. Phase changes were more observed under water vapors gases. These changes depended on the surface conductivity of PEDOT: PSS deposited on the sensor. The double-port SAW gas sensors modified with the PEDOT: PSS presented the highest sensitivity in the case of water vapor, with a maximum phase shift of 0.8° and an insertion loss of about 0.5 dB at room temperature. The obtained results could pave the way to implement advanced designs of high-performance and wireless electroacoustic gas sensors based on electropolymerization.

Abstract: International audience; In the context of power semiconductor devices, ultra wide bandgap (UWBG) materials offer increased critical electric fields compared to wide-bandgap (WBG) materials [1]. It is the case of monocrystalline diamond which exhibits outstanding physical and thermal properties with, especially, a large critical electric field of 10MV.cm-1 [2] allowing to reach high breakdown voltages. This property combined to the reduced on-state resistance at high junction temperatures (typically 450K) makes diamond power devices a promising challenger to 4H-SiC and GaN based power devices [1]. Recently, a fabricated deep-depletion diamond (D3) MOSFET has reached a critical electric field of 5.4MV.cm-1 [3], far from the estimated 10MV.cm-1. Two-dimensional numerical simulations have pointed out an electric field crowding effect under the gate in both diamond and oxide (Al2O3) layers leading to a premature breakdown of the gate oxide at a drain-source bias of –175V. Consequently, in the view of achieving a 1kV breakdown voltage, specific designs are required to reduce the edge effects. One possible solution to reduce the electric-field crowding effect under the gate is the design of a field-plate, as proposed for Ga2O3 power devices [4]. In this work, a source-field plated diamond MOSFET is designed to match the requirement of 1kV breakdown voltage. The device architecture is based on the lateraldeep-depletion diamond MOSFETs which has been previously introduced [3]. Compared to this design, a passivation layer with Si3N4 is added underneath the field-plate to ensure a proper isolation of the active device. To quantify the capabilities of such design, two-dimensional device simulations are performed using Silvaco ATLAS to determine theoptimal sizing for the field-plate. Thereby, various field-plate extensions at the drain side, LFP, and field-plate heights, hFP, are investigated. Preliminary simulation results show a reduction of the peak electric field under the gate in both diamond and gate oxide layers, thus improving the device breakdown voltage up to 1kV, an improvement of more than 500% compared to the lack of field-plate. However, a special care must be paid to the passivation layer thickness as an electric field crowding effect appears at the field-plate edge that could cause a premature breakdown of the power device due to the passivation layer. Nevertheless, the source field-plated design shows attractive performances that could improve the current state-of-the-art of diamond power transistors in terms of experimental breakdown voltage vs on-state resistance.[1] N. Abstract: International audience; The detachment of the boundary layer over the wing of an aircraft and its detrimental effects during the critical phases of the flight (mainly takeoff and landing) has been extensively studied [1]. Controlling the separation of the boundary layer decreases the energy consumption (and consequently CO2 emissions) while also improving the maneuvering capability, safety, and durability of the aircraft by suppressing instabilities. Active flow control by means of pulsed jets along the span of the wing can be used to compensate for the momentum deficit in the boundary layer to delay its detachment from the airfoil [2]. However, implementing active flow control devices leading to a net gain in the energy balance remains an open issue which the CleanSky PERSEUS project attempts to address. The focus of the presented work is on the design of the Pulsed Jet Actuators and the optimization of their internal geometry to provide a targeted performance over a scaled NACA-4412 airfoil.

Abstract: Article submitted for peer-review to Elsevier's Diamond and Related Materials in Septembre 2021; Unlike SiC unipolar devices, the on-state resistance of diamond unipolar devices based on bulk conduction has a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) which reduces the conduction losses at high junction temperatures. Thus, in order to associate these opposed temperature coefficients, the current article focuses on the modeling of an hybrid power device composed of a n-type 4H-SiC MOSFET and a p-type diamond bulk FET device. The optimal performances and sizing of SiC and diamond devices are introduced and calculated, as an initial benchmark under the same specifications. Based on an analytical modeling of both switching and conduction losses, junction temperatures and associated heatsink paremeters, the hybrid device performances are evaluated for a synchronous buck converter operating at 1200V-1A and at an ambient temperature of 300K. The results described in the manuscript highlight an equilibrium of the hybrid device total losses over a large range of temperatures as well as a reduction by two of the SiC active area. The proposed analysis could be further extended to different voltage/current classes to meet the requirements of alternative applications.

Abstract: International audience; The production of large-scale photovoltaics (PVs) is becoming increasingly popular in the field of power generation; they require the construction of power plants of several hundred megawatts. Nevertheless, the construction of these PV power plants with conventional low-voltage (LV) conversion systems is not an appropriate technological path. Particularly, large cross-section cables, a high quantity of semiconductors, and the bulky layout of 50/60-Hz step-up transformers make the PV system less competitive in terms of energy efficiency and cost. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper introduces new PV plant topologies with an intermediate medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) collector that requires galvanic isolation for connecting the PV arrays. Then, the design of a power electronic transformer (PET) is proposed, implementing 1.7-kV and 3.3-kV silicium carbide (SiC) power modules. The study confirms that this converter allows the use of medium-frequency (MF) transformers with high power densities while maintaining high efficiency, which facilitates the implementation of isolated medium-voltage (MV) topologies for utility-scale PV power plants.

Abstract: In this thesis, we present an efficient numerical method to calculate the frequency and time responses of the field scattered by an object buried between two random rough surfaces for a 2-D problem. This method is called Generalized PILE (GPILE) method because it extends the PILE method which considers only two surfaces or an object buried under a surface. The GPILE method solves rigourously the Maxwell equations byusing a simple matrix formulation. The obtained results have a straightforward physical interpretation and allow us to investigate the influence of the object buried between the two rough surfaces. We distinguish the primary echo of the upper surface, the multiple echoes coming from the lower surface and those arising from the object. The GPILE method is applied to simulate the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) signal at nadir. The resulting time response helps the user to detect the presence of the object buried between the two random rough surfaces. Finally, the geometrical and physical properties of the object are adapted to that of a crack buried under a road to comply with the application to which this thesis is dedicated., Dans cette thèse, nous présentons une méthode numérique efficace pour calculer les réponses fréquentielles et temporelles du champ diffracté par un objet enfoui entre deux surfaces rugueuses pour un problème 2-D. Cette méthode est appelée méthode Generalized PILE (GPILE), car elle étend la méthode PILE qui ne considère que deux surfaces ou un objet enfoui sous une surface au cas de trois interfaces dont l’une est éclairée.La méthode GPILE résout rigoureusement les équations de Maxwell en utilisant une formulation matricielle simple. Les résultats obtenusont une interprétation physique simple et nous permettent d’étudier l’influence de l’objet enfoui entre les deux surfaces rugueuses. On distingue l’écho primaire de la surface supérieure, les échos multiples provenant de la surface inférieure et de l’objet. La méthode GPILE est appliquée pour simuler le signal du radar à pénétration de sol (GPR). La réponse temporelle qui en résulte permet alors de détecterla présence de l’objet enfoui entre les deux surfaces rugueuses. Enfin, les propriétés géométriques et physique de l’objet sontadaptées à celle d’une fissure enfouie sous la base d’une route pour se conformer à l’application à laquelle est dédiée cette thèse.

Abstract: A growing portion of the thermal load on board airplanes is due to densely packed electronic systems. This increased thermal load along with constraints on weight and volume have made simple and reliable cooling solutions an urgent need in the aerospace industry. There is a wealth of cooling solutions available in order to meet these demands, the simplest and most adaptable of which is probably jet impingement cooling. In this study, fluidic oscillators capable of producing pulsating jets were used to cool a heated surface and were then compared to equivalent steady jets. Although pulsating jets can be produced using a number of devices, fluidic oscillators offer the advantage of not having any moving parts. These oscillators are sustained by a self-induced internal flow instability and can function at different scales. Although the major part of this work is based on prototypes that produce jets with sub-millimetric widths, designs at one tenth that scale, i.e. with an exit slot width of 50 µm, are also presented. Reynolds numbers ranging from ReD = 3500 to 5250 and jet-to-plate spacing from 1D to 10D were studied (where D is the initial width of the jet). The Nusselt number distribution is found for each case and a comparison is made between the performance of equivalent steady and pulsating jets based on the average Nusselt number.

Abstract: International audience; Heat exchanger fouling is a major issue for heat transfer efficiency durability. In this study, we want to identify the evolutionunder fouling conditions of the performance of several geometries of finned tubes exchanger. We are particularly interested inwhether it is preferable to choose an inefficient but easily cleanable heat exchanger over a more complex geometries that do not require cleaning. The article focusses on finned tubes heat exchangers that are dedicated to flue gas heat recovery from chimney. In order to study several different configurations in controlled conditions, a test bench has been designed and manufactured. Heat transfer coefficients and the pressure drop of the different exchangers are calculated for an air flow of 190 °C and 6 m.s −1 with controlled dust injection. No pressure drop changes were observed during fouling tests for any of the heat exchanger configurations. This is probably due to the small thickness of the fouling layer and the modification of the external shape of the tubes by dust deposition that affects favorably the aerodynamic profile of the tubes.As expected, there is a typical exponential decrease in the heat transfer coefficients versus fouling time. When comparing the relative heat transfer decays during the fouling experiments for different heat exchanger configurations, it has be found that increasing the fins surface always improves the performance of the heat exchanger even when it is fouled.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with the electromagnetic wave scatteringfrom multi-layered media, containing random rough interfaces.It presents an extension of a basic asymptotic modelcalled the Kirchhoff-tangent plane approximation (KA) tomulti-layers. In order to be able to derive a simple expressionof the scattered intensity, further approximations mustbe made. Here, we focus on calculating only the coherentcontribution to the total scattered intensity and apply the socalledscalar Kirchhoff approximation that makes it possibleto simplify the mathematical expressions. Last, the randomrough interfaces are assumed to be uncorrelated, so that afully analytical expression of the (coherent) scattered intensityis obtained. Previous work validated this approach; thispaper focuses on analysing the hypothesis of taking only onereflection inside each layer into account.

Abstract: International audience; Grid connection of remote offshore wind-parks uses high-voltage direct current technology and in order to reduce costs and losses and maximize proﬁtability, semiconductor power losses must be minimized. To properly choose the semiconductors, it is necessary to estimate their losses for a large number of operating conditions. This article deals with a modelling approach to calculate power losses for many such operating conditions, based on measured semiconductor characteristics and the chosen multilevel modulation strategy.The case of the integrated gate-commutated thyristor is considered because, for a given device rating, it is possible to select an integrated gate-commutated thyristor beneﬁtingfrom the best trade-off between on-state losses and turn-off losses, thus minimising the power losses of the two end-stations.

Abstract: International audience; The generalized expansion of HVDC systems for applications such as interconnection between countriesand renewable energies is unquestionable. The performances and the efﬁciency of these links are crucial issues as they can transmit several TWh per year, while they are supposed to remain in operation during decades. Withthe broader use of modular multilevel converters, a huge quantity of semiconductor devices is used in the converter- stations, which may increase assembly complexity. This article deals with the use of devices with higher voltagesratings to keep the number of levels reasonable regarding the design constraints. Focusing on Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristors (IGCTs), this paper shows that 9 kV and 6.5 kV IGCTs exhibit excellent performancescompared to 4.5 kV devices and that they would be ideal for future +/- 640 kV / 1 GW symmetric monopole HVDC links.

Abstract: International audience; Ultra wide bandgap (UWBG) materials such as monocrystalline Diamond are foreseen as the nextgeneration power semiconductor devices [1], whereas wide bandgap (WBG) materials such as SiC and GaN are already pushing towards more efficient and more integrated power converters [2,3]. Diamond has outstanding physical properties such as the highest thermal conductivity (20 W•cm-1 •K-1 at room temperature), a large critical electric field (10 MV•cm-1), a wide doping range and a high carrier mobility in both P and N type doping types. Diamond devices are also maturing, with many improvements and breakthroughs in the recent years: Deep Depletion and inversion MOSFETs [4,5], 2DHG FETs with high current and high breakdown voltage capabilities [6], JFETs, high voltage and high temperature MESFETs, Schottky, PiN and Schottky PiN diodes [1]. Nonetheless, diamond devices based on bulk diamond conduction (e.g. MOSFETs, JFETs, MESFETs, Schottky diodes) suffer from the incomplete ionization of Boron dopants at typical operating junction temperatures (e.g. 300K-400K), which increases consequently the ON state resistance of such unipolar devices. Moreover, the active area of diamond can be limited by defect density and substrate size, which limits the high-current capability of diamond power devices in a short term.

Abstract: International audience; The global development of high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) systems in fields such as renewable energy sources, interconnection of asynchronous grids or power transmission over great distances, is unquestionably important. Though widely used, the modular multilevel converter with half-bridge cells is sensitive to DC pole-to-pole faults and the time-response of the protections is critical. Reliability and availability are paramount: circuit-breakers must minimize the effects of any fault on the converter, while ensuring rapid restart. This paper focuses on the modelling aspects to analyse the behaviour of HVDC stations during DC pole-to-pole faults, using either AC or DC circuit-breakers, with different parameters. The proposed model can represent the main issues met by the converter cells during DC faults, such as semiconductor overcurrents and overvoltages, allowing a proper design of the cells.

Abstract: International audience; The research work presented in this paper aims to optimize the dynamic response of a carbon-epoxy plate by including into the laminate one frequency-dependent interleaved viscoelastic layer. To keep an acceptable bending stiffness, some holes are created in the viscoelastic layer, thus facilitating the resin through layer penetration during the co-curing manufacturing process. Plates including (or not) one perforated (or non-perforated) viscoelastic layer are manufactured and investigated experimentally and numerically. First, static and dynamic tests are performed on sandwich coupons to characterize the stiffness and damping properties of the plates in a given frequency range. Resulting mechanical properties are then used to set-up a finite element model and simulate the plate dynamic response. In parallel, frequency response measurements are carried out on the manufactured plates, then successfully confronted to the numerical results. Finally, a design of experiments is built based on a limited number on numerical simulations to find the configuration of bridges that maximizes the damping while keeping a stiffness higher than half the stiffness of the equivalent undamped plate.

Abstract: A paraffin-Compressed Expanded Natural Graphite (CENG) composite encapsulated in aluminium shell has been thermally aged in a packed bed heat storage tank. A hydraulic test bed has been settled in order to impose 8500 thermal cycles where the material underwent a phase change at each cycle. The PCM phase change provokes an expansion of the composite structure that might affect the effective thermal conductivity and then the heat transfer rate of the Thermal Energy Storage (TES). This performance has been monitored all along the cycling test showing a non-significant change in heat transfer rate, despite a delamination of the composite within the capsule. This phenomenon has been explained by the delamination that affects mainly the thermal conductivity in the axial direction while the heat transfer from the PCM to the aluminium shell occurs essentially on the planar direction. Indeed, the thermal conductivity in planar direction is approximatively six times higher than on the axial direction. A DSC analysis on new and aged samples showed that the phase change temperatures remained the same and the latent heat magnitude decreased by less than 10%. A FTIR analysis confirms the chemical stability of the PCM-CENG composite after 8500 cycles.

Abstract: The dynamic response of ships following grounding and collision accidents may be influenced by structural topology as well as operational and environmental conditions. Traditionally, the consequences of such events may be assessed by crude empirical methods or laborious experiments. Computational methods offer a useful alternative in terms of accurately capturing crushing mechanisms also accounting the influence of surrounding water. This paper presents a benchmark study that compares the structural dynamic response by explicit nonlinear FEA approaches and the semi-numerical super-element method. Simulations for typical accident scenarios involving passenger ships confirm that implementing the influence of hydrodynamic restoring forces in way of contact may be useful for either collision or grounding. Yet, for grounding scenarios, the damaged area resulting from analytical simulations appears to be sensitive to the failure strain values adopted to model the rupture of the ship bottom floors.

Abstract: International audience; Reducing the energy consumption of a complex, especially cyber-physical, system is a cross-cutting concern through the system layers, and typically requires long feedback loops between experts in several engineering disciplines. Having an immediate automatic estimation of the global system consumption at design-time would significantly accelerate this process, but cross-layer tools are missing in several domains. Executable domain-specific modeling languages (xDSLs) can be used to design several layers of the system under development in an integrated view. By including the behavioral specification for software and physical components of the system, they are an effective source artifact for cross-layer energy estimation. In this paper we propose EEL, a language for annotating xDSL primitives with energy-related properties, i.e. how their execution would contribute to the energy consumption on a specific runtime platform. Given an xDSL, energy specialists create EEL models of that xDSL for each considered runtime platform. The models are used at design time, to predict the energy consumption of the real systems. This avoids the need of energetic analysis by deployment and measurement on all runtime platforms, that is slow and expensive. We augment an existing language workbench for xDSLs with an editor for EEL models and a component that computes energy-consumption estimations during model editing. The evaluation shows that EEL can be used to represent estimation models from literature, and provide useful predictions.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with the interest of compact transient thermal models in the optimization of power converting system. These models have to take into account thermal coupling effects between the different chips of a power module based on SiC MOSFETs. The developed models are easily implementable within simulation tools such as Modelica. We will show that for applications operating at low duty cycle or with fast varying power demand, the consideration of transient models could improve a global optimal design by lightening the system. This approach also ensures that the junction temperatures do not exceed their limit values.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents dynamic modelling, controller design and simulation results of a novel aerial robot dedicated to manipula- tion and grasping of large-size objects. This robot can be described as a flying hand composed of four fingers, four quadrotors and a body struc- ture. The four quadrotors are arranged so as to allow the full actuation of the body structure in SE(3). This permits the system to maintain its position and attitude while closing the fingers despite external distur- bances. The opening/closing motion of each finger is actuated by the yaw rotation of one quadrotor and transmitted through a non-backdrivable worm-gear mechanism so that the hand can produce secured grasps. We design a model predictive controller to deal with unknown mass, inertia and center of mass. The effectiveness of the controller and its robustness against external disturbances and noise are validated through several simulations using ADAMS-SIMULINK co-simulation.

Abstract: Dans de nombreux domaines comme celui de l’agroalimentaire, les nanomatériaux manufacturés sont utilisés pour leurs propriétés propres à la nano-échelle (propriétés optiques, mécaniques, etc.) ainsi que pour leur surface spécifique importante. Les nanomatériaux manufacturés peuvent être ajoutés volontairement en tant qu’additifs alimentaires ou en tant qu’additifs technologiques dans la formulation des matériaux au contact des denrées alimentaires.Les nanomatériaux ne s’inscrivent pas dans une réglementation spécifique, mais sont régis par diverses réglementations sectorielles déjà existantes (CE n°258/971, UE n°1169/20112, UE n°10/20113, etc.). La question de l’harmonisation sur le plan réglementaire fait partie des enjeux et préoccupations soulevés par des organisations de la société civile, principalement des organisations non gouvernementales (ONG), quant aux nanomatériaux en général et dans l’alimentation en particulier.La coexistence de définitions hétérogènes d’un nanomatériau au sein de ces réglementations contribue à entretenir des confusions, notamment par l’interprétation des différents termes employés. Dans ce contexte, le groupe de travail (GT) « nano et alimentation » a établi, dans le cadre de son expertise, une qualification du terme « nanomatériau manufacturé » afin de préciser le champ de l’analyse.

Abstract: International audience; This article presents 1 a new asymptotic modeling of electromagnetic (EM) wave coherent scattering from a roughmultilayered medium, based on the scalar Kirchhoff-tangent plane approximation. The proposed EM model is developed tosimulate a realistic ground-penetrating radar (GPR) signal that considers the interface roughness of the multilayer. It allows usto investigate the influence of the interface roughness on the amplitude of the GPR echoes coming from the multilayeredmedium. Sounded multilayered medium generally has a low contrast between the successive layers, so that the multiple reflectionsinside each layer may be neglected; this assumption will be evaluated. The very low computational burden of this EMmethodis an important advantage as compared with a rigorous numerical method. First, numerical results in the frequency domain arepresented to validate the proposed model, by comparison with a reference method based on the Method of Moments (MoM).Then, numerical results in the time domain are presented to analyze the behavior and performance of this new method, andthe impact of both the interface roughness and the medium conductivity on the results.

Abstract: International audience; The competitiveness of companies in emerging countries implies many European countries must transform their production systems to be more efficient. Indeed, the new context created by the COVID-19 pandemic increases the necessity of digital transformation and focuses attention on its limited uptake by manufacturing companies. In France, the Industry 4.0 concepts are already implemented in large companies. Despite the demonstration and validation of their benefits, SMEs are reluctant to move towards implementation. This problem of SME performance improvement increases with the current geopolitical situation in Europe (raw materials and gasoil cost). It is thus urgent and paramount to find a better solution for encouraging SMEs in their transformation. Taking note of the brakes on uptake of Industry 4.0 concepts in SMEs, the objectives of this paper are to find levers to accelerate implementation of Industry 4.0 concepts in SMEs, through the development and the deployment of a sustainable Industry 4.0 methodology, and to develop an intelligent system for supporting companies’ digital transformation in order to improve their performance. After a literature review, focused on Industry 4.0 concepts, theory of systems, organizational methods, and artificial intelligence, a sustainable methodology will be presented. The SME performance model that has been elaborated will then be shown and the structure of the intelligent system (mainly the decision aided tool) being developed for supporting the digital transformation of SMEs will be described. An illustrative example relating to a food elaboration SME will be presented for validating the concepts that have been developed. The proposed framework helped the company to formulate guidelines and transition towards a sustainable 4.0 company.
