Abstract

The study and preservation of tangible cultural and natural heritage is a global challenge for science and society at large. The European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS) will play a leading role in research on the interpretation, preservation, documentation and management of heritage. As an interdisciplinary infrastructure, E-RIHS will interconnect knowledge and methodologies to address key scientific questions in the field of heritage as a whole. The infrastructure is built on ten core pillars. It will provide a structured and unified input of large-scale instruments, portable devices, physical and digital archives. Its implementation will focus on scientific excellence, interdisciplinarity and cooperation. In doing so, it will offer unprecedented research opportunities to a wide range of interdisciplinary scientific communities.

Abstract

Cremation is a complex mortuary practice, involving a number of activities of the living towards the dead before, during, and after the destruction of the bodily soft tissues by fire. The limiting information concerning these behavioral patterns obtained from the pyre remains and/or cremation deposits prevents the reconstruction of the handling of the corpse during the burning process. This pioneering study tries to determine the initial positioning of the corpse in the pyre and assess whether the deceased was wearing closed leather shoes during cremation through isotopic (δ13C, δ18O) and infrared (ATR-FTIR) analyses of experimentally burnt pig remains, used as a proxy for humans. The results obtained show that both the position of feet on or within the pyre and the presence of footwears may moderately-to-highly influence the oxygen isotope ratios of bone apatite carbonates and the cyanamide content of calcined bone in certain situations. By forming a protective layer, shoes appear to temporarily delay the burning of the underlying pig tissues and to increase the heat-shielding effect of the soft tissues protecting the bone mineral fraction. In such case, bioapatite bone carbonates exchange oxygen with a relatively more 18O-depleted atmosphere (due to the influence of lignin-derived oxygen rather than cellulose-derived oxygen), resulting in more pronounced decrease in the δ18Ocarb values during burning of the shoed feet vs. unshoed feet. The shift observed here was as high as 2.5. A concomitant isotopic effect of the initial location of the feet in the pyres was also observed, resulting in a top-to-bottom decrease difference in the δ18Ocarb values of shoed feet of about 1.4 between each deposition level tested. Abstract

International audience; As a result of the availability of new scientific methods, the archaeological evidence for long-distance trade in the Merovingian period is now better verified than in the past. This new evidence points to a continuation of important trade connections between western Europe, India, and Southeast Asia, connections that were first established in the Greco-Roman period. Long-distance trade, principally maritime but also overland, between India and the Mediterranean in the Greco-Roman epoch is well attested both by texts and archaeological evidence, albeit more of the latter for India than for the West (Suresh 2004, 2007). There are few written sources that attest to the survival of such exchanges with the West in the early Middle Ages, but one notable exception is Cosmas Indicopleustes’s Christian Topography (Wolska-Conus 1973), a sixth-century text by a Greek merchant who later became a monk. Indicopleustes, whose name literally means “traveler of the Indies,” reported making a trip by sea to the southern coasts of India and testified to the precious textiles, spices, and gems that still reached the Mediterranean (Doehaerd 1971). Indian and Persian, and later Arabic documents also attest to this activity (Banaji 2012; Christides 2013). Until recently, the evidence was similarly limited for material remains. Beyond some textile remains preserved in the treasuries of churches or found in exceptional excavations like those of the Merovingian burials in the basilica of Saint-Denis near Paris, material evidence for these exchanges was rare.This limited picture is no longer the case today thanks to recent excavations undertaken in western Europe and to pioneering laboratory work. It can now be confirmed that at the start of the Merovingian period, tiny glass “Indo-Pacific beads” and garnets from India and Sri Lanka were employed in large quantities in Gaul to produce decorative items. Both beads and garnets testify to the survival, at least until the end of the sixth century, of exchanges between the Indian subcontinent and the western Mediterranean world. This chapter focuses first on glass beads and then on garnets. It discusses the significance of recent advances in research that allows us to understand the sources of these materials, how far both kinds of artifacts traveled, and the purposes they served once they arrived in Merovingian territories.Glass beads are one of the most original and iconic artisanal productions of the Merovingian period. Despite their apparent profusion in early medieval graves, few production sites have been found up till now within Merovingian territories. This factor has led to lacunae in publications devoted to understanding the technology and mechanisms of the supply of this type of material. We are now closer to understanding some important aspects of these complex developments. Following a multidisciplinary study of glass beads (archaeological, archaeometric, and technological), several groups of beads have been shown to have distant origins, including Egypt and the Syro-Palestinian coast, the Middle East (probably Mesopotamia), and southern Asia (India and/or Sri Lanka). The first half of this chapter offers an overview of current research carried out on pulled glass beads found in Merovingian contexts. More particularly, it focuses on one category of beads—miniature beads (Ø ≤ 2.5 mm)—produced on the Indian subcontinent, which are found in quite large numbers in fifth- and sixth-century cemetery sites in Merovingian Gaul (Fig. 36.1). These tiny beads are commonly called Indo-Pacific beads in archaeological studies because of their wide distribution in the regions of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific.

Abstract

This Scientific Vision aims to monitor the landscape of the setting up of the E-RIHS infrastructure, to describe the main scientific ambitions of E-RIHS in the coming years and to outline what pathways will be used to achieve them.The E-RIHS Scientific Vision will be the introduction of the E-RIHS Scientific and Technical description, one of the documents that will be produced to apply for the ERIC status.The first version of the E-RIHS Scientific Vision was elaborated in the framework of the task 9.1 “Excellence: priorities and strategy” of the WP9 of E-RIHS PP. European and national communities, as well as international partners, were widely consulted throughout the preparation process.A six pages flyer and a poster illustrating the Scientific Vision were also produced.

Abstract

Seven radiocarbon laboratories: Åbo/Aarhus, CIRCE, CIRCe, ETHZ, Poznań, RICH, and Milano-Bicocca performed separation of carbonaceous fractions suitable for14C dating of four mortar samples selected for the MOrtar Dating Inter-comparison Study (MODIS). In addition, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) analyses were completed by Milano-Bicocca and IRAMAT-CRP2A Bordeaux. Each laboratory performed separation according to laboratory protocol. Results of this first intercomparison show that even though consistent14C ages were obtained by different laboratories, two mortars yielded ages different than expected from the archaeological context.

Abstract

Absolute dating of mortars is crucial when trying to pin down construction phases of archaeological sites and historic stone buildings to a certain point in time or to confirm, but possibly also challenge, existing chronologies. To evaluate various sample preparation methods for radiocarbon (14C) dating of mortars as well as to compare different dating methods, i.e.14C and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), a mortar dating intercomparison study (MODIS) was set up, exploring existing limits and needs for further research. Four mortar samples were selected and distributed among the participating laboratories: one of which was expected not to present any problem related to the sample preparation methodologies for anthropogenic lime extraction, whereas all others addressed specific known sample preparation issues. Data obtained from the various mortar dating approaches are evaluated relative to the historical framework of the mortar samples and any deviation observed is contextualized to the composition and specific mineralogy of the sampled material.

International audience; Absolute dating of mortars is crucial when trying to pin down construction phases of archaeological sites and historic stone buildings to a certain point in time or to confirm, but possibly also challenge existing chronologies. It should become a standard tool for archaeometric research as it contributes considerably to the historical, artistic, social, cultural and touristic valorisation of our built heritage. To compare on the one hand the different methods – radiocarbon and OSL – as well as to evaluate the best method of how to prepare samples for radiocarbon dating, an intercomparison study amongst various laboratories was set up. The results of radiocarbon dating of mortars depend very much on the accuracy with which minute differences in crystal structure between the various sources of anthropogenic and geogenic carbonates can be discriminated. As a detailed characterisation of the samples prior to the actual dating was necessary, the laboratories cooperated and employed a range of methods.

Abstract

Prussian blue, a hydrated iron(III) hexacyanoferrate(II) complex, is a synthetic pigment discovered in Berlin in 1704. Because of both its highly intense color and its low cost, Prussian blue was widely used as a pigment in paintings until the 1970s. The early preparative methods were rapidly recognized as a contributory factor in the fading of the pigment, a fading already known by the mid-eighteenth century. Herein two typical eighteenth-century empirical recipes have been reproduced and the resulting pigment analyzed to better understand the reasons for this fading. X-ray absorption and Mössbauer spectroscopy indicated that the early syntheses lead to Prussian blue together with variable amounts of an undesirable iron(III) product. Pair distribution functional analysis confirmed the presence of nanocrystalline ferrihydrite, Fe10O14(OH)2, and also identified the presence of alumina hydrate, Al10O14(OH)2, with a particle size of ∼15 Å. Paint layers prepared from these pigments subjected to accelerated light exposure showed a tendency to turn green, a tendency that was often reported in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century books. The presence of particles of hydrous iron(III) oxides was also observed in a genuine eighteenth-century Prussian blue sample obtained from a polychrome sculpture.

International audience; Absolute dating of mortars is crucial when trying to pin down construction phases of archaeological sites and historic stone buildings to a certain point in time or to confirm, but possibly also challenge existing chronologies. It should become a standard tool for archaeometric research as it contributes considerably to the historical, artistic, social, cultural and touristic valorisation of our built heritage. To compare on the one hand the different methods-radiocarbon and OSL-as well as to evaluate the best method of how to prepare samples for radiocarbon dating, an intercomparison study amongst various laboratories was set up. Abstract

International audience; Archaeological excavations carried out between March 2009 and January 2011 on the grand-place in Nivelles, by the service of AWaP, have identified several burial zones around the abbey. The exceptional state of preservation of organic materials for sectors 01 and 03 allowed a multidisciplinary study of the site (anthropology, carpology, parasitology, bioarchaeology, dendrology, etc.) under the supervision of the archaeologists. The results of this research will be published in a monograph edited by M.-L. Van Hove and D. Willems. The dendrochronological analysis was carried out on a hundred wooden planks from different types of funerary devices: containers (coffins, boxes) and/or supports (funerary beds), their function being not clear in all cases. The amount of samples and the quality of the preserved wood provided data for several issues including dating, dendroprovenancing, description of the trees’ growth environment(s) and a technical examination of the artefacts. Results of this investigation offer stimulating perspectives for understanding the organisation and skills of the craftsmen. In addition, the excavated artefacts from Nivelles gave our work a novelty since they led to the construction of a site chronology which represents a considerable step for the dendrochronology of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in Belgium and neighbouring countries, this species being known to be difficult for dendrochronology and still little studied in Europe.; Les fouilles archéologiques menées entre mars 2009 et janvier 2011 sur la grand-place de Nivelles, par le service de l’archéologie de l’AWaP, ont mis au jour plusieurs zones d’inhumation autour de l’abbaye. L’état de conservation exceptionnel des matériaux organiques dans deux secteurs en particulier (01 et 03) a permis une étude approfondie et multidisciplinaire du site (anthropologie, carpologie, parasitologie, archéobiologie, dendrologie, etc.) sous la houlette des archéologues. Les résultats de ces investigations seront publiés dans une monographie sous la direction de M.-L. Van Hove et D. Willems. Le corpus soumis à l’IRPA pour examen dendrochronologique se compose d’une centaine de planches de bois provenant de différents types de dispositifs funéraires : contenants (cercueils ou coffrages) et/ou supports (lits), leur fonction n’étant pas toujours bien définie. Le grand nombre de pièces échantillonnées et la qualité du matériau ligneux ont nourri plusieurs problématiques dont la datation, la détermination de la provenance des arbres, une caractérisation de leur(s) milieu (x) de croissance et une analyse technique des artefacts. Les informations acquises durant cette recherche ouvrent de stimulantes perspectives pour une meilleure compréhension de l’organisation et des savoir-faire des artisans. De plus, le matériel mis au jour à Nivelles confère à notre travail un caractère inédit puisqu’il a conduit au montage d’une chronologie de site qui constitue un avancement considérable pour la dendrochronologie du hêtre (Fagus sylvatica L.) en Belgique et dans les pays limitrophes, une essence réputée difficile du point de vue dendrochronologique et encore peu étudiée en Europe.

International audience; This paper deals with a case study of the collaboration between sculptors and painters in the context of the construction of altarpieces in 17th-century Spain. It analyses a drawing by Francisco Rizi (Madrid, 1614- Escorial, 1685) in the British Museum depicting a sculptural group and fragments of an architectural framework and relates it to two other drawings by the sa*e artist in the National Library of Spain. They are identified as fragments of the design drawing of the for*er altarpiece of the Expectant Virgin in the church of the Calced Trinitarians in Madrid.

El mecenazgo artístico de los prelados españoles del siglo XVII estuvo marcado por la oposición entre el boato que pedía la dignidad de su función y la austeridad impuesta por su celo religioso, y estas contradicciones se hicieron particularmente manifiestas en el género del retrato. Durante el reinado de Felipe IV, la caída de Olivares supuso una ascensión política para algunos de estos eclesiásticos gracias a su prestigio de administradores austeros y su sólida formación universitaria. Entre estos personajes se destacaron los prelados Don Baltasar de Moscoso y Sandoval (1589-1665) y Don Diego de Arce y Reinoso (1587-1665), cuyos retratos los muestran como altos dignatarios de la Iglesia y de la Monarquía. Pero estos hombres, que reunieron un enorme poder, fueron también admirados por su fama de santidad, hasta tal punto que tras su muerte sus vidas fueron objeto de verdaderos relatos hagiográficos que se inscribían en una campaña propagandística para defender su causa en un eventual proceso de beatificación. Abstract

International audience; In Spain and especially in Madrid baroque paintings show a significant influence of Rubens, both in formal terms and from a technical point of view. The influence excerted by Rubens and his followers was mediated by two channels: firstly by the works of these artists that were kept in Spain and secondly by prints coming from the Spanish Netherlands. Among the artists that initiated this trend in Madrid, Francisco Rizi de Guevara (1614-1685) was one of the most influential since he was appointed royal painter to the Spanish court. The paintings of Rizi deploy an exuberance that can be attributed directly to the influence of Rubens and the use of the colours and the pictorial technique point to a direct study of works of Rubens available in Madrid at that time.

Murillo (Seville, 1617-1682) in the reserves of the Wuyts-Van Campen en Baron Caroly Museum in Lier. The painting is a Virgin and Child, a work that experts lost track of in the middle of the 19th century. The article retraces the history of the painting and links its style to that of the artist’s first mature period.

The cult of the Christ Child and his depiction with the 'arma Christi' expanded enormously during the 17th century, owing to the revival of mysticism spread by the new reformed orders such as the discalced Carmelites and the new Franciscan families. One of the themes developed by this new spirituality was that of the Presage of the Passion, which had spread to some extent during the development of Baroque Classicism in Rome, but whose influence in Spain was more restricted. 24. Chromatographic and spectroscopic identification and recognition of ammoniacal cochineal dyes and pigments.

Abstract

In this work a combined chromatographic and spectroscopic approach is used to provide a diagnostic assessment of semi-synthetic ammoniacal cochineal through the syntheses of its dyes and lakes according to art historical recipes. Commercially introduced in the late XIX century as a dye and pigment, it was used to obtain a brilliant purplish/violet nuance which provided a more stable option over carminic acid although its evidenced use in manufacts and artworks of heritage importance have been scarcely documented. Through HPLC-DAD, it has been possible to identify 4-aminocarminic acid as the main component of ammoniacal cochineal highlighting a chemical formula analogous to acid stable carmine, a recent patented food dye. FTIR clearly distinguishes the amine group in the ammoniacal cochineal dye preparation and TLC-SERS allows for an adequate separation and spectral differentiation in its main components to be evidenced. Colloidal SERS has permitted spectral markers useful in discerning ammoniacal cochineal over carminic acid to be highlighted and discussed. 25. Unexpected materials in a Rembrandt painting characterized by high spatial resolution cluster-TOF-SIMS imaging.

Abstract

The painting materials of the Portrait of Nicolaes van Bambeeck (Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels, inv. 155) painted by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1641 has been studied using high resolution cluster-TOF-SIMS imaging. In the first step, a moderate spatial resolution (2 μm) was used to characterize the layer structure and the chemical composition of each layer on account of a high mass resolution. Then, in the second step, and despite a low mass resolution, the cluster primary ion beam was focused well below 1 μm in order to reveal smaller structures in the painting sample. The study confirmed the presence of starch in the second ground layer, which is quite surprising and, at least for Rembrandt paintings, has never been reported before. TOF-SIMS also indicated the presence of proteins, which, added to the size and shape of lake particles, suggests that it was manufactured from shearings (waste of textile manufacturing) of dyed wool, used as the source of the dyestuff. The analyses have also shown various lead carboxylates, being the products of the interaction between lead white and the oil of the binding medium. These findings considerably contribute to the understanding of Rembrandt's studio practice and thus demonstrate the importance and potential of cluster-TOF-SIMS imaging in the characterization on a submicrometer scale of artist painting materials.
