Abstract: International audience; Dredging is a common and important activity to maintain or improve/extend navigable depths in many ports and harbours. Dredging sometimes occur in areas where the sediments are contaminated material and is subject to consent and licensing according to the national regulations. This work shows the general pattern of distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), such as As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn, in surface sediments of the Ria de Aveiro lagoon mouth area (Portugal). The work is based on textural, mineralogical and geochemical analysis of 137 surface sediment (first centimetre) samples. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) was used to evaluate the overall enrichment of these elements and the enrichment factor (EF) was determined to assess the degree of anthropogenic input of taking into account the characteristics of the receiving environment and its legitimate use; and one station (29) as slightly contaminated dredged material (Class 3) that may be used for embankments or in the case of soaking requires a thorough study of the place of deposition and subsequent PTEs. Portuguese Ministerial Order n.° 1450/2007 was used as reference to classify dredging and elimination or application of dredging materials. Results evidence that the study area, which is highly anthropized, the concentration of PTEs is largely controlled by the hydrodynamics. The PLI index values show the highest enrichment of metals in the western side of Mira Channel entrance. The EF values indicate that eighty-three stations have significant enrichment of metals particularly Pb and Cr being the significant enrichment by Cr much more common and by Pb punctually. According to the Portuguese regulation most of the sites can be classified as clean dredged material (Class 1), sixteen sites as dredged material with trace contamination (Class 2) that may be immersed in the aquatic environment monitoring. In addition, sediments have an important ecological value.

Abstract: Este artículo contiene 18 páginas, 4 figuras., Good datasets of geo-referenced records of alien species are a prerequisite for assessing the spatio-temporal dynamics of biological invasions, their invasive potential, and the magnitude of their impacts. However, with the exception of first records on a country level or wider regions, observations of species presence tend to remain unpublished, buried in scattered repositories or in the personal databases of experts. Through an initiative to collect, harmonize and make such unpublished data for marine alien and cryptogenic species in the Mediterranean Sea available, a large dataset comprising 5376 records was created. It includes records of 239 alien or cryptogenic taxa (192 Animalia, 24 Plantae, 23 Chromista) from 19 countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. In terms of records, the most reported Phyla in descending order were Chordata, Mollusca, Chlorophyta, Arthropoda, and Rhodophyta. The most recorded species was Caulerpa cylindracea, followed by Siganus luridus, Magallana sp. (cf. gigas or angulata) and Pterois miles. The dataset includes records from 1972 to 2020, with the highest number of records observed in 2018. Among the records of the dataset, Dictyota acutiloba is a first record for the Mediterranean Sea. Nine first country records are also included: the alga Caulerpa taxifolia var. distichophylla, the cube boxfish Ostracion cubicus, and the cleaner shrimp Urocaridella pulchella from Israel; the sponge Paraleucilla magna from Libya and Slovenia; the lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus from Cyprus; the bryozoan Celleporaria vermiformis and the polychaetes Prionospio depauperata and Notomastus aberans from Malta., The publication of this article is supported by the Open Access Publishing Fund of the International Association for Open Knowledge on Invasive Alien Species (INVASIVESNET; www.invasivesnet.org). Abstract: The spatial and temporal variability of metazooplankton communities in relation to environmental and trophic factors were studied in the Gulf of Gabes during three periods of increasing thermal stratification in June, July and September. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) revealed the time and space succession of three zooplankton communities in relation to the degree of thermal stratification. A co-inertia analysis showed the association between these communities and the trophic conditions (abundance and composition of microplankton) driven by stratification. Three divergent communities were evident. The first, characterized by annelid larvae and coastal copepods, was associated with shallow mixed and microplankton-rich water (June, coastal). The second, characterized by euphausiids, amphipods, doliolids and several deep-water copepods, corresponded to highly stratified microplankton-poor water (September). The third, characterized by the most ubiquitous and abundant species, was linked to intermediate water (June deep and July). Temperature and salinity conditions also explained the distribution of key species. Clausocalanus furcatus, Oithona plumifera and Triconia conifera were clearly associated with warm and highly stratified water (September). Enhanced thermal stratification led to higher surface salinity, explaining the emergence of euryhaline taxa such as Oithona plumifera.

Abstract: Barrier reefs are among the most important ecomorphosis for Posidonia oceanica meadows and have long been subjected to anthropic pressures. The authors mapped the entire Sidi Rais (northeastern Tunisia) Posidonia oceanica barrier reef by means of remote sensing based on processing a satellite image acquired via Google Earth © software, coupled with field observations obtained by snorkeling. The map thus produced represents the P. oceanica barrier reef in its current state, covering a total area of 156.77 ha, the reef being divided into three distinct sections separated by reverse flows with each section subject to varied anthropic factors and disturbances.

Abstract: International audience; This study analyzes the benthic trophic state of Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia) based on the total organic matter and the bioavailability of biopolymeric carbon including proteins (PTN), carbohydrates (CHO), lipids (LIP), chlorophyll a, as well as bacteria counts. The overall simultaneously extracted metals (SEM), and acid volatile sulfides (AVS) as well as the SEM/AVS ratio indicative of the toxicity of the sediments also were analyzed aiming to study their impact in the dimension, composition and structure of both dead and living benthic foraminiferal assemblages.In the studied sites TOC content is relatively high and the PTN/CHO values indicate that they can be considered as meso-eutrophic environments. The CHO/TOC and C/N values suggest that the OM which accumulated on the sediments surface has mainly natural origin despite the introduction of municipal and industrial effluents in the lagoon and the large bacterial pool.The living assemblages of benthic foraminifera of Bizerte Lagoon are quite different to other Mediterranean transitional systems studied until now. They are composed of typical lagoonal species but also include several marine and opportunistic species including significant numbers of bolivinids, buliminids, Nonionella/Nonionoides spp. and Cassidulina/Globocassidulina spp. These assemblages seem to benefitfrom the physicochemical parameters and the sediment stability. They may however face environmental stress in the lagoon related to the AVS production as a result of the organic matter degradation and toxicity in some areas due to the available concentrations of metals. Nonetheless statistical results evidence that the structure and dimension of assemblages are being controlled mostly by OM quantity and quality related mainly to the availability of PTN, CHO and chlorophyll a. Results of this work support the importance of considering OM quantity and quality in studies of environmental impact in coastal systems.

Abstract: Due to scarcity, irregular rainfall and increasing water demand, several reservoirs have been built in recent decades in Tunisia to meet water needs for essential uses, which is generally done without analysis of their capacity to maintain a high quality of aquatic life and equitable distribution of water resources. Currently, 90% of available water resources are already mobilized and climate change exacerbates the country's aridity which makes it difficult to monitor water needs. With a view to contributing to their effective management and setting future directions for controlling and improving inland fish productivity, a comparative limnological study was carried out on 8 artificial reservoirs that were stocked with mullet fry. This study, based on a review of existing data, provides information on the availability and quality of inland water resources in relation to international standards and the biological potential (plankton, fish and other organisms) of these reservoirs. The satisfactory water quality for aquatic life, as well as the significant growth and production of introduced species associated with the rearing of mullet fry, clearly show that, despite several problems, Tunisian reservoirs represent an important potential that still needs to be developed. To this end, we recommend to improve the fishing techniques and the stocking of mullet fry. In addition, the strengthening of fishermen's groups, the encouragement of private initiative and the quality control of water and fish meat are highly requested.

Abstract: International audience; The Sicily Channel controls the exchange between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean Basins, with a dynamics characterised by strong shear at the interface between the south-eastward surface flow and the strong north-westward bottom flow. Microstructure measurements taken in the two main deep passages of the Sicily Channel show that this region is a hotspot for turbulent mixing. At the north-eastern location (C01), just downstream of where the strong bottom flow crosses a sill, turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates for the deep flow were of the order of 10-8-10-7 W kg-1. At the south-western location (C02) on the milder slope of Talbot Bank, the observed bottom flow was weaker and along the isobaths, with lower dissipation rates of the order of 10-9 W kg-1. Furthermore, a recirculation of the western deep flow around Talbot Bank was hypothesised based on current measurements and a decrease in dissipation rates in the canyon north of C01. Strong shear, internal tides and interactions with the rough topography were found to be responsible for turbulence. The dynamical regime was dominated by mechanically driven turbulence with a large range of turbulence intensities. Favourable conditions for double diffusive salt fingers and double diffusive convection also occurred, however double diffusion prevailed in only 0.5% of the observations. Mixing efficiency was computed from the microstructure measurements, and its variability was explored in the context of variable turbulence intensities. The vertical diapycnal diffusivity computed from the measurements was higher at C01 (1.1×10-3 ± 3.2×10-3 m2 s-1) than at C02 (1.8×10-4 ± 7.6×10-4 m2 s-1). Moreover, upward salinity dominated density fluxes of the order of 10-6 and 10-7 kg m-2 s-1 were found to be characteristic of the transitional and intermediate waters, respectively. Significant changes in water mass properties in the Sicily Channel were thus inferred.

Abstract: The degree of pyritization and degree of trace metal pyritization (DTMP) were investigated in sediments from Ghar El Melh Lagoon (northern Tunisia) in order to study metal deposition. A sediment core and 28 samples were thus taken in summer 2008, and metals and sulfate were analyzed in pore water/pyrite. Acid-volatile sulfide and metals were simultaneously extracted from these two fractions and the role of pyrite in the metal cycling studied. To examine pyrite presence and mineralogical form in sediments, X-ray diffraction of the washed and decarbonated sediment was performed along with scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that pyrite is present in fromboidal and euhedral forms. Thermodynamic calculation highlighted the formation of metallic sulfides and the co-precipitation of metals with iron sulfides. The DTMP increases with depth, indicating that these metals are either sequestered as sulfides or that they co-precipitate with pyrite into the deep sediment.

Abstract: Twenty specially designed fishing nets were used to catch broodstock of the forage fish roach and rudd (Rutilus rutilus and Scardinius erythrophthalmus). The monofilament gill nets were of different mesh sizes (18, 22, 24, and 26 mm) but of identical dimensions (4 × 50 m). The fish, caught in Sidi Salem reservoir in 2014, amounted to a total of 8901 roach and rudd caught at 41 different times; 3335 broodstock forage fish were transferred to 11 forage fish-deficient Tunisian reservoirs. The best yields (0.464 fish/m2) were obtained with fishing gear fitted with 18-mm mesh size; however, fish mortality with this net was very high, exceeding 83.36%. The greatest efficiency was obtained using nets of 22- and 24-mm mesh with a number of fish per unit effort (NPUE) of 0.181 and 0.173 fish/m2, and a mortality of 54.34 and 53.85%, respectively. Gill nets of 26-mm mesh size were inappropriate (lowest yield 0.129 fish/m2). Length of rudd and roach at first maturity and Gonadosomatic index (GSI) were measured, indicating that all transferred fish were mature. Transfer techniques were improved by holding the captured fish for 5 days before release into the host reservoir.

Abstract: International audience; A high-resolution 2D barotropic tidal model was developed for the Gulf of Gabes and used to characterise hydrodynamic processes and tidal dynamics. The model is based on the Regional Ocean Modelling System. It is forced at the open boundaries by the semidiurnal M2 and S2 astronomical components while meteorological forcing has been neglected. The model results show good agreement with observations confirming that it reproduces the gulf's main tidal characteristics reasonably well. In fact, the simulated semidiurnal tidal components M2 and S2 generate important sea level variations and coastal currents. Tidal propagation is directed to the gulf's western sector while tidal resonance occurs in its inner sector where the M2 and S2 amplitudes are about 50 and 36 cm, respectively. Phase maxima (170°-185°) are located inside Boughrara Lagoon for both the simulated M2 and S2 tides. The strongest currents are found in shallow coastal regions and at the lagoon's western inlet. Abstract: International audience; A study was undertaken of the patterns of spatial variability, epiphytic biomass and distribution of epiphytic fauna and flora of Posidonia oceanica. Samples were taken at four stations located approximately 4 km apart, exposed to different current conditions. Stations A and B, situated near the Oued Mimoun tidal channel with its relatively strong bi-directional flows, were affected by high current tide. Sampling was conducted in the Attaya area of Kerkennah Island (Tunisia) in August 2009 at depths between 2 and 3 m, with the results indicating differences among the stations. Shoot density decreased when exposed to high levels of hydrodynamic activity generated by current tides whereas the epiphytic biomass of P. oceanica leaves decreased at sheltered stations located far from the channel. Epiphytic algae such as Heterokontophyta, Rhodophyta and Chlorophyta, and epiphytic fauna represented by Bryozoa, Hydrozoa, Annelida, Porifera and Tunicata, dominated the epiphytic assemblages and were abundant at the station most exposed to high current tide hydrodynamics. Cyanobacteria, however, were dominant in stations exposed to low current tide.

Abstract: International audience; The effects of sediment elutriate, prepared from a sediment resuspension simulation process, on the growth of bacterioplankton and of different sized phytoplankton as well as on their grazing by protozooplankton were investigated in Mediterranean coastal ecosystems during spring phytoplankton bloom. In parallel, the response of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and protozooplankton to sediment elutriate enrichment was assessed in microcosm experiments. Elutriate addition provoked a high enrichment in nutriments of the overlying water, particularly in ammonium, dissolved organic matter but also in trace metal elements and herbicides. Overall, elutriate addition significantly increased the biomass of bacterioplankton and of total phytoplankton, but the phytoplankton size fractions responded differently to elutriate enrichment. The picophytoplankton showed a significant strong enhancement in both growth and production rates, relatively to control, while these rates significantly decreased for nano- and microphytoplankton. Accordingly, the phytoplankton size structure shifted in elutriate microcosm toward a dominance of the picophytoplankton concomitant with a significant reduction in larger size fractions. The elutriate addition caused also a clear shift in the taxonomic composition of protozooplankton, associated with a significant modification of its functional diversity, with the dominance of pico-sized cell consumers (such as aloricate ciliates, heterotrophic nanoflagellates and mixotrophic dinoflagellates) in the detriment of grazers of nano- and microphytoplankton (such as heterotrophic dinoflagellate). The protozooplankton grazing on small prey (bacterioplankton and picophytoplankton) increased, while feeding on nano- and micro-sized phytoplankton decreased after elutriate addition. These results have implication for the carbon transfer pathway, which could change from an herbivorous food web to a microbial food web, influencing so the exportation of biogenic carbon through the other trophic compartments.

Abstract: International audience; We report on a 10-year study of the dynamics of toxic dinoflagellate Karenia selliformis at 20 stations along the nearshore of the Gulf of Gabes (Tunisia) in relation to environmental variables. Dinoflagellates and K. selliformis have dominated the phytoplankton community and K. selliformis blooms have taken place since 2001. Phytoplankton groups showed significant variability among sampling sites, but did not vary significantly from year to year. Redundancy analysis revealed that salinity, nitrate and phosphorus significantly explained the variability of the main phytoplanktonic groups namely, diatoms, dinoflagellates, cyanobacteria and euglenoids, while K. selliformis exhibited a specific pattern. Because of the wide variability in K. selliformis abundance, we tested the influence of environmental variables on its presence/absence using a generalized linear mixed-effect model (GLMM). K. selliformis occurrence had a positive relationship with nitrate and a negative one with total phosphorus. The different spatial gradients of these two chemical variables led to spatial differences in K. selliformis development prevalent near touristic areas. Temperature was also retained in the GLMM and since it rose over the 10 years of the study, it likely supports the expansion of K. selliformis. The discrepancies between model predictions and observed occurrences suggest that consideration of other sources of environmental forcing may improve our understanding of the determinism of K. selliformis dynamics. Our study may be useful in the management of this ecosystem so as to plan for the best disposal options in the treatment of urban and industrial wastes in the gulf's coastal waters.

Abstract: International audience; Metal concentrations in sediments were investigated in the Gulf of Tunis, Tunisia, in relation to anthropic activities along the Mejerda River and Ghar El Melh Lagoon, with effluents discharged into the gulf. Distribution of grain size showed that the silty fraction is dominant with 53%, while sand and clay averages are 34 and 12% respectively. Zn concentration increased in the vicinity of the Mejerda River while Pb was at its highest levels at the outlet of Ghar El Mehl Lagoon. Sediment elutriate toxicity, as measured by oyster embryo bioassays, ranged from 10 to 45% abnormalities after 24 h, but no relation was found between metal concentration and sediment toxicity. The AVS fraction that represents monosulfide concentrations in the sediment was higher in the central part of the gulf than in the coastal zone. Abstract: International audience; A 3D coupled physical-biogeochemical model is developed and applied to Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia), in order to understand and quantitatively assess its hydrobiological functioning and nutrients budget. The biogeochemical module accounts for nitrogen and phosphorus and includes the water column and upper sediment layer. The simulations showed that water circulation and the seasonal patterns of nutrients, phytoplankton and dissolved oxygen were satisfactorily reproduced. Model results indicate that water circulation in the lagoon is driven mainly by tide and wind. Plankton primary production is co-limited by phosphorus and nitrogen, and is highest in the inner part of the lagoon, due to the combined effects of high water residence time and high nutrient inputs from the boundary. However, a sensitivity analysis highlights the importance of exchanges with the MediterraneanSea in maintaining a high level of productivity. Intensive use of fertilizers in the catchment area has a significant effect on phytoplankton biomass increase.

Abstract: International audience; To examine the state of pollution of Bizerte Lagoon which is exposed to intense anthropogenic pressure, two sediment cores were taken at two sites, one undergoes the dual effects of both marine waters arriving from the Mediterranean Sea through the Channel, and also of freshwater from the Tinja River; the other core is located at the center of the lagoon where water depth is maximal (12 m). Heavy metal concentrations in the two cores were assessed, with calculated enrichment factors and geo-accumulation indexes. Core sediments were also studied for chemical speciation and their monosulfide contents were measured. Results from enrichment factors and geo-accumulation indexes show an accumulation of Cd, Zn, Cr, and Pb, while chemical speciation revealed a risk only from Cd and Mn. Comparison of sequential extraction values with those of acid volatile sulfides revealed that non-toxic effects may be caused by any of the studied metals in the sediment.

Abstract: International audience; The invasive sabellid polychaete Branchiomma bairdi McIntosh, 1885 was collected in the Boughrara Lagoon (southern Tunisian coast) between 2012 and 2013. This species was originally described from Bermuda and has been widely reported in the Caribbean Sea. It has been considered as non-indigenous species on the Pacific coast of Panama and the California Gulf. Recently, B. bairdi was recorded along the Italian and Turkish coasts, Australia, Canary and Madeira Islands. It was suggested that the commercial shipping is the most likely vector for the introduction of the species to Mediterranean Sea. A description of the species along with a discussion of its systematic position and ecology are provided.

Abstract: International audience; The Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia) functions as a sedimentation environment characterized by receiving allochthonous sediments mainly transported by the Ben Hassine, Rharek and Guenich streams, as well as marine sediments from the Mediterranean Sea. It is subjected to significantenvironmental changes due to the natural and anthropic influences altering the natural patterns of circulation, extraction and/or deposition of mineralogical materials. The aim of this investigation is to analyze the sediments supply and early diagenetic processes in Bizerte Lagoon. Thephyicochemical parameter of the sediment pore water, as well as their texture, mineralogical composition (X-Ray diffraction technique - XRD), magnetic susceptibility and their geochemical composition (namely lithogenic and evidence a coarser particles contribution of the Ben Hassinestream to the lagoon. The other streams seem to introduce mostly fine grained sediments in the lagoon. The currents circulation, the water residence time and the biological productivity influence the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the bottom sediments. The industrialactivity is also an important factor, since it results in the accumulation of high levels of some metals, such as Fe. Metals are mostly retained in the sediment in areas with active biogeochemical activity due to high organic matter accumulation. Mineralogical and geochemical patterns biogenic chemical elements analyzed by ICP-MS) were analyzed in 10 sampling stations. The water temperature with an average of 15.2°C was stablein the study area. The sediments were generally characterized by fine granulometry, mainly mud and sandy mud, poorly to very poorly sorted, and constituted by two or more granulometric particle modes. The mineralogical results revealed the presence of phyllosilicates, quartz, pyrite, calcite, anatase and K-feldspar, and other minerals in smaller proportions. The fine sediment and high phyllosilicates and Al contents indicate the presence of weak currents in most part of the studied area. The results of sorting, skewness and kurtosis suggest that the currents are more active in the northern region of the lagoon, near the channel of communication with the Mediterranean Sea. They also indicate contributions from different rocks sources, diverse processes of transport and deposition of sediments and varied processes of production of autochthonous materials

Abstract: International audience; A combined multimetric trophic index (TRIX) and the Random Forest (RF) model were used to characterize the trophic status of Bizerte Lagoon. The RF model was used to build a predictive model of chlorophyll a using physicochemical variables (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, oxygen, temperature and salinity) as predictors. The approach is based on physicochemical and biological parameters measured in samples collected twice weekly from January to December 2012 at one representative sampling station located at the lagoon center.The observed TRIX values vary from 5.18 to 6.12, reflecting waters ranging from moderate to poor quality with a high trophic level. The results of the RF model show that the most important predictor of chlorophyll a variation appears to be dissolved oxygen, followed by nitrate and temperature, suggesting a reduced model for this variable. The link between chlorophyll a and observed variables was also studied using numerical models, analyzing the linear statistical correlations and a recently proposed non linear model, the Random Forest. Both methods highlight a high correlation between chlorophyll a and dissolved oxygen as opposed to chlorophyll a and nitrate.

Abstract: International audience; A study was conducted in the spring of 2009, the winters of 2010 and 2013, and in the summer of 2012 at 13 stations in Boughrara Lagoon, Tunisia (southern Mediterranean). The country’s largest lagoon, it is considered to be an anthropogenically stressed area, though a major tourist centre—Djerba Island—is located along its northern shores. The lagoon bottoms were studied via analyses of grain size, surface sediment composition, total organic matter (TOM) and through the trophic and functional organisation of benthic macrofauna. The results indicate that the bottoms are composed of fine, medium or coarse sands and that sediment distribution is controlled by water movement. Estimation of TOM content revealed that the studied samples present both normal and imbalanced sediments. The structure and organisation of the lagoon’s benthic macrofauna are dominated by select deposit feeders and underwent significant changes during the period 2010–2013.Subjected for decades to increased pollution due to growing human activities in the surrounding area, Boughrara Lagoon now appears to be impacted by certain environmental/anthropogenic stressors, as indicated by the presence of pollution-tolerant bio-indicator species in the imbalanced area. The response of the lagoon ecosystem to changes in benthic sediment deposition provides a potential assessment tool for similar habitats elsewhere.

Abstract: International audience; The authors investigated the impact of the extension of the El Kantra Channel on the composition and structure of macrobenthic assemblages in Boughrara Lagoon (Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia along with the use of 4 biotic indices (AMBI, BENTIX, M-AMBI and TUBI). Thirteen stations were sampled seasonally in 2012–2013. Forty-one species were found in 2012–2013 not recorded in 2009–2010, including 20 species of polychaetes belonging to the trophic groups of deposit-feeders and carnivores which are expected to increase in areas disturbed by organic pollution. During the survey, we recorded a high fish mortality, essentially caused by the development of harmful algal blooms (HAB) which increased organic matter deposition, thus inducing polychaete development. This seems to weaken the bio-indicating power of biotic indices used here which, paradoxically, classified all sampled stations at a high ecological status. A review of these indices and their applicability to all marine environments is recommended.

Abstract: International audience; In the summer of 2015 the authors analysed grain size and surface sediment composition through high spatial resolution from samples taken at 53 stations along the Hammamet coast (southern Mediterranean Sea). The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler deployed in this study showed that the surface current flows toward the north-east, parallel to the coast at a maximum speed along the main axis of about 5.9 cm s−1. Near the bottom the current flows toward the north-west at a maximum speed of 2.2 cm s−1. The tide plays a relatively small role in water circulation in Hammamet Gulf. Spatial distribution of particle size, along with speed and current direction analysis, furnish an overview of the gulf’s sediment dynamics and transport. The sands are categorised as moderately sorted, well sorted or very well sorted. Particle size distribution of surface sediments from the coast to a depth of 25 m offshore shows a decreasing trend in the offshore direction. Mineralogical analysis shows that Hammamet’s coastal sands are composed of two main minerals: quartz and calcite. Magnesium calcite and aragonite are present in small amounts.Sediment dynamics along the Hammamet Gulf shores are complex, being subject to the effect of swells and secondarily of tides. We encourage the implementation of responsible environmental management procedures in order to help preserve the site.

Abstract: International audience; Fluxes of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and their associated metals were performed off the Mejerda River Delta during both the wet (March) and the dry (July) seasons in 2012, using sediment traps at study stations at depths of 10, 20 and 40 m. Fluxes nearest to the Mejerda outlet were more significant, especially during winter (36 g m−2 day−1), but dissipated further offshore, 24.5–6 g m−2 day−1 at the 20 m and 21.8–4.8 g m−2 day−1 at the 40 m stations. Many variations observed in seasonal and spatial metal fluxes are similar to those of SPM, in particular Pb and Zn, probably because they are associated with the mining activity characteristic of the Mejerda catchment. Chemical speciation reveals that most of the metals (20–100%) are bound to the residual fraction. The most toxic metals (Pb, Zn) are bound in part to the exchangeable fraction (20–50% for Pb and 5–15% for Zn) making them relatively bioavailable and therefore potentially toxic. While Cu and Cd fluxes are not always clearly established according to season, both metals are apparently sequestered deep in the sediment, bound especially to clays (40–80% for Cd and up to 100% for Cu).

Abstract: International audience; To monitor and assess the state of Tunisian freshwater fisheries, two surveys were undertaken at Ghezala and Lahjar reservoirs. Samples were taken in April and May 2013, a period when the fish catchability is high. The selected reservoirs have different surface areas and bathymetries. Using multi-mesh gill nets (EN 14575 amended) designed for sampling fish in lakes, standard fishing methods were applied to estimate species composition, abundance, biomass, and size distribution. Four species were caught in the two reservoirs: barbel, mullet, pike-perch, and roach. Fish abundance showed significant change according to sampling sites, depth strata, and the different mesh sizes used. From the reservoir to the tributary, it was concluded that fish biomass distribution was governed by depth and was most abundant in the upper water layers. Species size distribution differed significantly between the two reservoirs, exceeding the length at first maturity. Species composition and abundance were greater in Lahjar reservoir than in Ghezala. Both reservoirs require support actions to improve fish productivity

Abstract: International audience; A study of suspended particulate matter (SPM) fluxes along with their associated metals, organic matter and carbonates, was conducted off the Mejerda River outlet in May 2011 and in March and July 2012 at depths of 10, 20 and 40 m using sediment traps. SPM fluxes are more significant near the Mejerda outlet, especially in winter, but dissipate further offshore. Normalization reveals that the Mejerda is a major source of Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Co, all of which are the result of human activities. In contrast, Fe, Mn and N are of authigenic origin. The enrichment factor shows that Pb, Zn and especially Cd are the most highly polluting metals off the Mejerda outlet. This confirms the trend observed on the shores of the Mejerda prodelta and is consistent with the type of mining activities conducted in the Mejerda catchment.

Abstract: In this study, we studied the influence of the physical-chemical and biological factors (bacterioplankton and phytoplankton abundances) for zooplankton dynamics in a Sidi Saâd reservoir in Centre of Tunisia. The samplings were carried out in spring, summer, autumn and winter (2005 to 2006) in the deepest station (surface, 5, 10 and 15 m). In this reservoir, the highest density of zooplankton abundance was recorded in summer (92.2 ind L -1 ; 0.43 × 10 3 μg L -1 ) and autumn (86.9 ind L -1 ; 0.23 × 10 3 μg L -1 ) at a depth of 10 m. The copepods (56% of total zooplankton abundance) and cladocera (42% of total zooplankton abundance) were the most abundant groups. The physico-chemical factors, especially the water temperature (r = 0.53, p = 0.027, n = 16) and dissolved oxygen (r = -0.59, p = 0.03, n = 16), influence directly the zooplankton community. It was suggested that in Sidi Saâd reservoir, both the top-down and bottom-up regulations account for the regulation of zooplankton. The phytoplankton was the factor responsible for the structure and seasonal dynamics of the zooplankton community, which are well related to changes in algae diversity and abundance, noting that cyanobacteria have major impacts. The “top-down” effect of planktivorous fish on the zooplankton is a significant factor affecting the plankton community’s dynamics in this reservoir. Abstract: International audience; An investigation was conducted from summer 2012 to winter 2013 at 25 stations along the Tunisian coast near Kef Abbed at Marsa Dhouiba (north-east Mediterranean Sea) to analyse grain size, sediment mineralogy and currents. Particle-size analysis shows that sand deposits at shallow depths are characterised by S-shaped curves, indicating a degree of agitation and possible transport by rip currents near the bottom. At greater depths (between 10 and 30 m), the bottom is covered by coarse sand and gravel. A current was observed transporting sediment eastward along the coast; another seaward current was also noted. Generated by wind, swell and especially waves from west to north-west, the two currents transport clay and silt-sized sediment seaward. An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler showed Marsa Dhouiba’s coastal current to follow a direction 175° East, with its main axis running north/north-west parallel to the coast and its minor axis also running north/north-west. Analysis of current components indicates that the velocities u and v are oriented north to south. Sediment evolution in shallow waters is dependent on detrital inputs from streams and winds. The coarse fraction of surface sediments in Marsa Dhouiba presents 87% of total sediments and is located at depths of 10 to 30 m. Sediment dynamics in the Marsa Dhouiba region are closely related to the west/north-west swell.

Abstract: The main goal of this work is to analyze the elemental composition of the test’s wall of some species/specimens of Textulariids (sub-class Subclass Textulariia), collected in surface sediments of the NW Iberian Margin. The elemental analyses was based on the Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) on the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM; Hitachi, S4100) of Textularia deltoidea, Textularia agglutinans, Sahulia conica, Karrerotextularia flintii, Siphotextularia heterostoma, Karreriella bradyi, Spiroplectammina sagittula and Arenoparrella mexicana . The elelemetal cocnentrations of the species wall were compared with the mineralogical composition (X-Ray diffraction) of the sediments of the stations where these specimens were collected. The results evidence that whereas the test’s wall of T. deltoidea , T. agglutinans , K. flintii and S. heterostoma are characterized by the highest concentrations of Ca, Mg and Y and lowest Si and Al contents; S. conica, S. sagittula and K. bradyi present intermediate concentrations of the refereed variables but display the highest K content; A. mexicana , contains the highest Si and Al contents and lowest Ca, Mg and Y concentrations. Some species that live in silisiclastic sediments contains high calcium content in their tests (such as T. deltoidea , T. agglutinans whereas some species much common in the deep sea includes high concentrations of lithogenic elements. Results of this work suggests that some Textulariid species can use the test for “storage” and “excretion” of toxic or useless elements that can be used when necessary. These features seems to be functions of biomineralization of the analyzed species and not only the intention of built a protective envelope.

Abstract: International audience; Bizerte Lagoon is a southern Mediterranean semi-enclosed lagoon with a maximum depth of 12 m. After assessing sediment quality, the authors report on the physicochemical characteristics of the lagoon’s surface sediment using SEM (simultaneously extracted metals) and AVS (acid volatile sulfides) as proxies. Biogeochemical tools are used to investigate the environmental disturbance at the water–sediment interface by means of SEM and AVS to seek conclusions concerning the study area’s pollution status. Results confirm accumulation of trace elements in sediment. The use of the SEM-AVS model with organic matter in sediment (ƒOC) confirms possible bioavailability of accumulated trace elements, especially Zn, in the southern part of the lagoon, with organic matter playing an important role in SEM excess correction to affirm a nontoxic total metal sediment state. Individual trace element toxicity is dependent on the bioavailable fraction of SEM Metal on sediment, as is the influence of lagoon inflowfrom southern water sources on element bioavailability. Appropriate management strategies are highly recommended to mitigate any potential harmful effects on health from this heavy-metal-based pollution.

Abstract: International audience; Three core samples were taken from zones offshore from the Mejerda River Delta (Tunisia) and analyzed formajor and trace elements to assess their relationships with organic matter, monosulfides and carbonates, aswell as for pollution and bioavailability. Chemical speciation,ΣSEM/AVS, the enrichment factor (EF) and thegeo-accumulation index (I-geo) were used. Iron, cadmium, lead and zinc – the most frequently mined metalsin the Mejerda catchment – were found as contaminants in the offshore areas. Estimations of trace elementaccumulation using the EF and the I-geo index show that lead, and to a lesser extent zinc, are the most pollutingmetals off the Mejerda outlet. According to their bioavailability, these metals are also the most toxic. Only cadmiumis heavily present in delta sediment (EF N 100) though deeply sequestrated (100% bound to the residualfraction) and thus presents no toxicity.

Abstract: International audience; Seasonal distribution of dinoflagellate cysts were studied at five surface sediment study stations in Ghar El MelhLagoon (GML) (Tunisia) in relation to physicochemical parameters and phytoplankton abundance in the watercolumn. At least sixteen dinocyst types were identified, dominated mainly by Protoperidinium spp., Scrippsiellatrochoidea complex, Lingulodinum machaerophorum, Alexandrium spp. and Gymnodinium spp., along with manyround brown cysts. Cyst abundance ranged from 0 to 229 g−1 dry sediment. No significant differences in cyst distributionwere found among stations, though a significant variation was observed among seasons with cyst dominancein autumn. No significant variation was found between cyst abundance and the different abiotic factorsmonitored, neither in the water column (physicochemical parameters) nor in the sediment (% H2O). Low dinocystabundance was consistent with the dominance of non-cyst-forming dinoflagellates in the GML water column.

Abstract: International audience; The authors investigated sediment quality in Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia) focusing on geochemical characteristics, metal sediment fractionation and elutriate toxicity assessment. Nickel, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd partitioning in sediments was studied; accumulation and bioavailability were elucidated using enrichment factors, sequential extractions, redox potential, acid volatile sulfide and biotest procedures in toxicity evaluation. Results revealed an accumulation for Pb and Zn, reaching 99 and 460 mg kg−1 respectively. In addition, the acid volatile sulfide values were high in both eastern and western lagoon areas, thus affecting metal availability. Mean enrichment factor values for Pb and Zn were 4.8 and 4.9, respectively, with these elements as the main contributors to the lagoon's moderate enrichment level. Toxicity levels were influenced by accumulation of Zn in different surface sediment areas. Core sediments were investigated in areas with the highest metal concentrations; metal fractionation and biotest confirmed that Zn contributes to sediment toxicity.

Abstract: International audience; Tunis Gulf (northern Tunisia, Mediterranean Sea) is of great economic importance due to its abundant fish re-sources. Rising urbanization and industrial development in the surrounding area have resulted in an increase in untreated effluents and domestic waste discharged into the gulf via its tributary streams. Metal (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn) and major element (Mg, Ca, Na, and K) concentrations were measured in the grain fine fraction Mg > Zn > Mn > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg. Metals tend to be concentrated in proximity to source points, suggesting that the mineral enrichment elements come from sewage of coastal towns and pollution from industrial dumps and located along local rivers, lagoons, and on the gulf shore itself. This study showed that trace metal and major element concentrations in surface sediments along the Tunis Gulf shores were lower than those found in other coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea.

We present detailed information on how the cruise worked, including 1) the cruise track and sampling stations, 2) the overall strategy, based mainly on the collection of plankton, suspended particles and water at the deep chlorophyll maximum, and the separation of these particles and planktonic organisms into various size fractions, as well as the collection of atmospheric deposition, 3) the operations performed and material used at each station, and 4) the sequence of operations and main parameters analysed. The paper also provides the main environmental conditions that were prevailing during the campaign. Lastly, we present the types of articles produced based on work completed by the cruise that are part of this special issue.

Abstract: International audience; Plankton represents the main source of carbon in marine ecosystems and is consequently an important gateway for contaminants into the marine food webs. During the MERITE– HIPPOCAMPE campaign in the Mediterranean Sea (April–May 2019), plankton was sampled from pumping and net tows at 10 stations from the French coast to the Gulf of Gabès (Tunisia) to obtain different size fractions in contrasted regions. This study combines various approaches, including biochemical analyses, analyses of stable isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N), cytometry analyses and mixing models (MixSiar) on size-fractions of phyto- and zooplankton from 0.7 to >2000 μm. Pico- and nanoplankton represented a large energetic resource at the base of pelagic food webs. Proteins, lipids, and stable isotope ratios increased with size in zooplankton and were higher than in phytoplankton. Stable isotope ratios suggest different sources of carbon and nutrients at the base of the planktonic food webs depending on the coast and the offshore area. In addition, a link between productivity and trophic pathways was shown, with high trophic levels and low zooplankton biomass recorded in the offshore area. The results of our study highlight spatial variations of the trophic structure within the plankton size-fractions and will contribute to assess the role of the plankton as a biological pump of contaminants.

Abstract: International audience; The authors studied the benthic flux of oxygen, dissolved iron and manganese, and nutrients in-situ at three points in the Mejerda River Delta, at depths of 10 m, 20 m, and 40 m, in March and August 2012. Three sedimentary cores were simultaneously drilled, at the same locations, to determine the diffusive flux of Fe2+, Mn2+, NO3-, NH4+, and PO43- and to estimate the diagenetic mechanisms occurring below the sediment–water interface. Photosynthesis was not sufficiently high during the day and the oxygen consumption at the sediment-water interface was about 1.7 to 10 mmol/m²/day, essentially controlled by the degradation of organic matter and oxidation of reduced elements. Nitrate contents were relatively high in the sediment (above 140 μM for NO3-) and their production was not always in conformity with the general scheme of early diagenesis, moreover, the benthic flux between the water and sediment was not clearly established. The diffusive flux of NH4+ and PO43- was always directed to the water column, at averages of 1.27 μmol/m²/day for PO43- and 96.5 μmol/m²/day for NH4+, complying with those measured by the benthic chambers, but representing less than 30% of the benthic fluxes for NH4+ and less than 5% for PO43

Abstract: International audience; A survey of the epiphytic leaves of Posidonia oceanica was conducted along a depth transect at both the control station Attaya in the Kerkennah Islands and the disturbed Mahres station on the Sfax coast (Tunisia). Samples were collected by scuba divers at depths of 5, 10, 15, and 20 m in July 2008. We evaluated whether the pattern of spatial variability of the macroepiphyte assemblages of leaves of Posidonia oceanica differed in relation to anthropogenic interference. The results indicate that the decrease in shoot density and leaf length according to depth was low at Mahres. The biomass of epiphytic leaves and the percentage cover of epiphytic assemblages decreased with depth for both stations and heavily at Mahres, this decline being related to anthropogenic disturbance. This study shows that the highest values of epifauna and epiflora were detected at the disturbed station Mahres. Macroalgae assemblages decreased with depth at both stations and were dominated by Rhodophyta, whereas the percentage cover of the epifauna leaf that decreases according to depth was dominated by Hydrozoa and Bryozoa. Changes in epiphyte assemblages, epiphytic biomass, percentage cover, and species richness in proportion to Heterokontophyta, Rhodophyta, Cyanobacteria, Hydrozoa, Porifera, and Tunicata between the two stations constitute promising tools for detecting environmental disturbance.

Abstract: International audience; Mussel farming is the main economic activity in Bizerte Lagoon, with a production that fluctuates depending on environmental factors. In the present study, we apply a bioenergetic growth model to the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, based on dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory which describes energy flux variation through the different compartments of the mussel body. Thus, the present model simulates both mussel growth and sexual cycle steps according to food availability and water temperature and also the effect of climate change on mussel behavior and reproduction. The results point to good concordance between simulations and growth parameters (metric length and weight) for mussels in the lagoon. A heat wave scenario was also simulated using the DEB model, which highlighted mussel mortality periods during a period of high temperature.

Abstract: International audience; We assessed the spatial variability in the size structure of phytoplankton, community composition, primary production and carbon fluxes through the planktonic food web of the Gulf of Gabès (GG; Southeastern Mediterranean Sea) in the fall of 2017 during the MERMEX-MERITE cruise. High concentrations in nutrients, chlorophyll a (~ 2–6 µg L−1) and primary production (1816–3674 mg C m−2 d−1) revealed an eutrophic status of the studied stations in the GG. In accordance with hydrodynamic features, inorganic nutrients showed increases in concentrations from North to South and from coast to offshore, these nutrient gradients impacting the spatial distribution of phytoplankton community. Size-fractioned phytoplankton biomass and production were the lowest in the northernmost zone where they were mainly sustained by pico-sized fraction. Concomitantly, in this area, small aloricate ciliates were dominant leading to a high microbivory. Conversely, higher biomass and production were measured towards the South and offshore with prevalence of larger phytoplankton (nano- and/or micro-sized fractions) supported by diatoms. The herbivorous protozooplankton and metazooplankton were more abundant in these zones, resulting in an increase of the herbivory. The vertical particulate organic carbon flux followed also a north–south and coast-offshore increasing gradient, with a higher contribution of phytoplankton, and zooplankton fecal pellets to the sinking organic matter in the southernmost area. Our results suggest that even in nutrient-rich and highly productive waters, a continuum of trophic pathways, ranging from microbial to multivorous and herbivorous food webs, may exist, which implies different efficiencies in carbon export and carrying capacity within the ecosystem.

Abstract: International audience; This study uses Cu and Zn isotopic compositions as proxies of sources and metal transfers in the planktonic food webs from the Mediterranean Sea. Plankton was collected in spring 2019 in the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) along a North-South transect including coastal and offshore zones (MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE campaign). δ65Cu and δ66Zn were determined on four planktonic size fractions from 60 to 2000 μm. Combined δ65Cu and δ66Zn with geochemical tracers (Ti, particulate organic phosphorus) showed that geogenic particles were ubiquitous with plankton assemblages. The δ15N ecological tracer showed that planktonic food web was enriched in heavy isotopes of Cu and Zn in the higher trophic levels. δ65Cu were correlated with picoplankton in the offshore zone, and with zooplankton in the southern coastal zone. Firmicutes bacteria were found correlated with δ66Zn in northern and southern coastal zones suggesting decomposition of particulate matter at the DCM. These findings suggest that biogeochemical process may impact Cu and Zn isotopy in the planktonic community.

Abstract: International audience; A hierarchical sampling design was used during two seasons (spring (May) and summer (August) 2006). Using this design, three regions of the Kerkennah Islands (Tunisia) were analyzed for the distribution of microalgal, protozoan and metazoan assemblages in two different habitats: (1) the water column; and (2) on Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile (P. oceanica) leaves in shallow meadows. A total of 85 species were obtained. In particular, the diatom family Naviculacea consistently dominated (both numerically and in their diversity) the micro-algae in all regions for the two seasons of the study and in both habitats. In the Chergui region, which is the closest area to a source of impact, fast growing centric diatoms (such as Thalassionema, Rhizosolenia, Striatella, and Skeletonema) were identified as indicators of high organic matter and nutrient enrichment in water bodies. Protozoan and metazoan species abundance in the different regions indicate a non-random spatial and temporal distribution of the epiphytic organisms on leaves of P. oceanica that correlated with phytoplankton. The results also indicate that (1) the abundance of micro- and macroorganisms in the three regions were higher on P. oceanica leaves than in the water column for the two seasons; (2) environmental factors such as currents and tide influenced assemblages; and (3) the highest abundance was due to direct exposure to the polluted coast of Sfax and the effect of tidal asymmetries generating nutrient-rich inputs from the city.

Abstract: Here we assessed the subsurface ultraphytoplanktonic (10 μm) community along a North-South round-trip Mediterranean transect as part of a MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise campaign in April-May 2019. Temperature, salinity, and nutrient concentrations in subsurface waters (2-5 m depth) were also measured along the transect. The subsurface ultraphytoplankton community structure was resolved with a spatial resolution of few kilometers and temporal resolution of 30-min intervals using automated pulse shape recording flow cytometry. The subsurface waters were clustered into seven areas based on temperature and salinity characteristics. Synechococcus were by far the most abundant group in all prospected zones, and nanoeukaryotes were the main biomass component, representing up to 51 % of ultraphytoplanktonic carbon biomass. Apparent net primary productivity (NPP) followed a decreasing gradient along the transect from north to south and was mostly sustained by Synechococcus in all zones. These findings are likely to have implications in terms of the trophic transfer of contaminants in planktonic food webs, as they highlight the potential role of nanoplankton in contaminants bioaccumulation processes and the potential role of Synechococcus in a likely transfer via grazing activities.

Abstract: International audience; The spatial and temporal dynamics of rotifers in relation to the physico-chemical parameters in Fish- Culture Research Station (Southern Tunisia) were studied monthly from February 2005 to January 2006. Thirteen rotifer species were found: Brachionus urceolaris, Brachionus calyciflorus, Brachionus sp., Lecane stichaea, Lecane rhytida, Lecane sp., Hexarthra mira, Rotaria tardigrada, Conochiloides natans, Trichocerca marina, Keratella quadrata, Keratella cochlearis and Notommata codonella. The most dominant rotifer was B. urceolaris (76% of total abundance). Rotifer density and water temperature were negatively correlated (r ¼ 0.94, n ¼ 12, p ¼ 0.001). The highest abundance of rotifers was found in basin 4 (1.5105 indm3, in June 2005)
