Abstract

International audience; A continuous process combining an alkaline pretreatment, neutralization and injection of enzymes within a twin screw extruder was previously implemented and demonstrate industrial potential. The present work focuses on the investigation of the effects of alkali and temperature during the alkaline pretreatment of sweet corn co-products (SCC) for the production of fermentable sugars with a lower chemical input. Study of NaOH/SCC and internal temperature was performed in ranges of 4–8% (w/w) and 50–170 °C in a laboratory scale twin screw extruder. Analysis of carbohydrates and lignin of the pretreated biomass was performed and the filtration efficiency was also monitored through extrudate dry matter and filtrate mineral matter. The carbohydrate accessibility and process performances were studied by the enzymatic hydrolysis of the extrudate. Increasing temperature reinforces the effects of soda on solubilization of hemicelluloses, thus a hemicelluloses removal reach more than 50%. At optimal conditions, the cellulose-rich substrate after enzymatic hydrolysis achieve a glucose released of 70%, with glucose and xylose yields of 250 g per 1Kg of dry SCC.

Abstract

International audience; Sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was treated under mild alkaline conditions (solid:liquid ratio of 1:20 (w/v), 1.5% NaOH (w/v), 60 °C, 6 h) to fractionate the lignocellulose in order to produce a typical mild alkaline extract from a lignocellulosic biomass. The solid residue was enriched in cellulose, while the SCB alkaline extract contained lignin and hemicelluloses, but also inorganic salts, five phenolic monomers and acetic acid. After concentration of the alkaline extract by evaporation, low pressure chromatography with water as eluent was performed to produce purified fractions. Two different strong acid cation (SAC) exchange resins were tested: one gel-type resin and one macroporous-type resin. The lignin and hemicelluloses were separated from the inorganic salts by the gel-type SAC exchange resin. On this resin, the phenolic monomers were partitioned regarding the presence or absence in their structure of a carboxyl group. On the macroporous-type SAC exchange resin, the largest sugar oligomers and lignin oligomers were obtained in a fraction free of inorganic salts, phenolic monomers and acetic acid.

Abstract

Milk contains two types of proteins: Caseins and whey proteins. There are four caseins: α/β/γ/κ caseins that formed micelles in milk. Whey proteins are globular proteins between 12 and 200 kDa: α-lactalbumin; β-lactoglobulin; Serum albumin; Immunoglobulin and Lactoferrin. Industrials fractionate milk to produce whey protein and casein isolate to make ingredients for the formulation of dairy products. Whey protein isolate can be heated to functionalize or pasteurize them. The objective of these three studies are to characterize the isolates of whey proteins and the impact of heating treatment on whey protein fractions and formulations using different FFF techniques: Asymmetrical-FFF; 2D AsFlFFF-RPLC and Centrifugal-FFFWhey protein isolate heated at high temperature were studied by Centrifugal-FFF coupled with MALS and RI. Aggregates with the lowest density and size elute in the void peak and represent 51% of the mass fraction. For the bigger one, there are two populations: one smaller than 1 micrometer and one higher, up to 4.5 micrometers. For size determination, the biggest population fractionated has been collected and analyzed by DLS in batch. Infant milk formulation without fat was investigated by Asymmetrical Flow FFF coupled with MALS; QELS and RI. The formulation contains bovine milk and isolate whey protein fractions. The technique separates the non-aggregated whey protein to the casein micelles. The addition of lactoferrin partially disintegrated the casein micelles. The formulations are heated at 67.5°C or 80°C. Native whey protein content decreases with the heat treatment, leading to their aggregation on with the casein micelles. The phenomena depend on the temperature and protein composition. At 80°C, shape ratio Rg/Rh of casein micelles increase with the temperature when the formulation is enriched in lactoferrin. The Rg and Rh decrease when the formulation is enriched in α-lactalbumin and lactoferrin. Transmission Electronic Microscopy are correlated with these results. At 80°C, whey protein aggregates are fixed outside the micelle for the first formulation and they are fixed inside the micelles for the second formulation.Whey protein isolate contains few quantities of caseins. The second objective of this study is to identify the presence of trace of caseins in whey protein isolate using 2D AsFlFFF-RP-HPLC. This technique allows to separate proteins by their size and by their polarity. A whey protein standard mix is studied: α-lactalbumin, β-lactoglobulin A and B, BSA, and 3 caseins. A 2D map is obtained with all separated proteins.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this study was to characterize the lipids present in the oil and kernels of Ricinodendron heudelotii seeds. Two dehulling methods were used to extract kernels from their husks: a heat treatment and a manual mechanical dehulling technique. Oil from kernels obtained by traditional heat treatment of seeds had a kinematic viscosity of 169 ± 0.5 mPa.s, and an iodine value of 175.6 ± 1.1 g/100 g oil. The oil from kernels isolated by mechanical dehulling had a kinematic viscosity of 128 ± 0.11 mPa.s and an iodine value of 195.2 ± 2.0 g/100 g oil. Determination of the minor compound profile of the oil revealed a total tocopherol content of 135.0 ± 0.4 mg oil from kernels isolated by traditional heat treatment. The oil obtained from kernels isolated by manual mechanical dehulling had a total tocopherol content of 178.3 ± 0.4 mg/100 g. An analysis of the fatty-acid profile of the oil from kernels isolated by traditional heat treatment revealed the presence of α-eleostearic acid (50.5% ±0.1), linoleic acid (24.0% ±0.0), β-eleostearic (8.4% ±0.0) and catalpic acid (0.40% ±0.1). By contrast, the fatty acid composition of oil from kernels isolated by manual mechanical dehulling was of α-eleostearic acid (60.1% ±0.2), linoleic acid (22.8% ±0.1). Ricinodendron heudelotii oil has a very high level (84.4 ± 0.4%) of polyunsaturated fatty acids (CLnA). Some analysis of the triglycerides present in the oil revealed the potential isomerization of α-eleostearic acid to form β-eleostearic acid and catalpic acid

Abstract

A fungal biofilm of Scedosporium dehoogii was successfully elaborated and used as a bio anode in a microbial fuel cell device. The cathode was a carbon felt electrochemically modified by electrodeposition of a film of poly-Ni(II) tetrasulphonated phthalocyanine (poly-NiTSPc). The elaborated biofilm, formed by electrodeposition of a suspension of Scedosporium dehoogii worked to catalyze acetaminophen (APAP) oxidation in the anode. The optimal potential during the electrodeposition process was found to be 0.8 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE) with a thickness of 3.5 ± 0.2 μm. The fabricated fungal microbial fuel cell (FMFC) proved to be an efficient fuel in acetaminophen with highly stable output performances offering a power density of 50 mW m−2 under an electromotive force of +550 mV in physiological conditions. The biodegradation of PAP, the main APAP by-product from bacterial biodegradation, was also studied and the optimal resistance from the usual polarization curves was 3.000 Ohm. Finally, the biodegradation of ligno-cellulosic materials such as bagasse, rapeseed, cellulose and lignin by Scedosporium dehoogii was successfully tested in Petri dishes. The growth of the fungus using these biomaterials as substrates followed the order: bagasse > rapeseed > cellulose > lignin. The FMFC was tested in the presence of natural lignin from sugarcane bagasse and complete degradation of the lignin by S. dehoogii biofilm was achieved with a power density of 16 mW m−2.

Abstract

International audience; Two types of Animal Fatty Wastewater Sludges (AFWS 1 and 2) were analyzed and fully characterized to determine their suitability for conversion into biofuel. AFWS 1 was determined to be unsuitable as it contains 68.8wt.% water and only 32.3wt.% dry material, of which only around 80% is lipids to be converted. AFWS 2 has only 15.7wt.% water and 84.3wt.% dry material of which is assumed to 100% lipids as the protein and ash contents were determined to be negligible. The 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) catalyzed esterification of AFWS with 1-butanol was performed in a novel batch reactor fitted with a drying chimney for the “in situ” removal of water and optimized using a non-conventional Doehlert surface response methodology. The optimized condition was found to be 1.66mol equivalent of 1-butanol (with respect to total fatty acid chains), 10wt.% of DBSA catalyst (with respect to AFWS) at 105°C for 3h. Fatty Acid Butyl Esters (FABEs) were isolated in good yields (95%+) as well as a blend of FABEs with 1-butanol (16%). The two potential biofuels were analyzed in comparison with current and analogous biofuels (FAME based biodiesel, and FABE products made from vegetable oils) and were found to exhibit high cetane numbers and flash point values.

Abstract

International audience; Rapeseed oil cake (ROC) is a biomass of particular interest for biorefinery and food activities, due to its high protein, lignin, polyphenol and fiber contents. An environmental separation process combining ultrafine milling and electrostatic separation was recently developed for proteo-lignocellulosic plant fractionation. Several of the parameters of the fractionation process (milling mode, electrode voltage, charge, particle size, etc.) can affect the efficiency of protein separation and extraction. We assessed the impact of three different mechanical modes of milling — ball milling, impact grinding and jet milling — on the electrostatic separation (ES) of lignin and protein from ROC biomass. The initial biomass and the ES fractions were characterized and correlations were identified between particle colors and sizes and their protein and fiber contents. Mechanical grinding had a significant impact on the surface properties of the particles, influencing their charge and the electrostatic separation of lignin and protein from biomass. The combination of impact grinding and electrostatic separation appear the most efficient and effective technologies for rapeseed oil cake protein concentrate

Abstract

International audience; The objective of this study is to develop bio-sourced waste chemicals for use as asphalt release agents. Glycerol was extracted from bio-sourced waste and transformed by transesterification into the surfactants undecenoates of glycerol (MUG) and undecenoates of diglycerol (MUDG). They were composed of glycerol, monoglycerol, diglycerol, triglycerol, tetraglycerol and water. The formulations were mixed separately with water at quantities of 5-50%, along with acetone and commercial bio-sourced ARAs in order to observe the effects. The formulations were subjected to performance testing with the asphalt slide test, finding significant reduction in adhesion for a number of different formulations. The interaction of the formulations with bitumen was tested by the bitumen degradation test, which was combined with FTIR-ATR analysis, finding that the formulations do not dissolve the bitumen, but rather were adsorbed by the bitumen. The effects on asphalt mix of the best performing formulation, MUG at 20% in water, was tested by indirect tensile strength, determining that the formulation was acceptable for use in the field.

Abstract

International audience; Extractive distillation processes enable the separation of non-ideal mixtures, including minimum or maximum boiling azeotropes and low relative volatility mixtures. Unlike azeotropic distillation, the entrainer fed at another location than the main mixture induces an extractive section within the column. A general feasibility criterion shows that intermediate and light entrainers and heterogeneous entrainers are suitable along common heavy entrainers. Entrainer selection rules rely upon selectivity ratios and residue curve map (rcm) topology including univolatility curves. For each type of entrainer, we define extractive separation classes that summarize feasibility regions, achievable products and entrainer – feed flow rate ratio limits. Case studies are listed as supplementary materials. Depending on the separation class, a direct or an indirect split column configuration will allow to obtain a distillate product or a bottom product, which is usually a saddle point of rcm. Batch and continuous process operations differ mainly by the feasible ranges for the entrainer – feed flow rate ratio and reflux ratio. The batch process is feasible under total reflux and can orient the still path by changing the reflux policy. Optimisation of the extractive process must systematically consider the extractive column along with the entrainer regeneration column that requires energy and may limit the product purity in the extractive column through recycle. For the sake of reducing the energy cost and the total cost, pressure change can be beneficial as it affects volatility, or new process structures can be devised, namely heat integrated extractive distillation, extractive divided wall column or processes with preconcentrator.

Abstract

International audience; The development of materials based on renewable and low-cost resources is today’s crucial interest for civil engineering. This work intends to investigate two new vegetable fibers as composite reinforcement for insulation application in the building industry. Miscanthus and sunflower stalk have mainly been selected for their high fiber content, low water content after harvesting, and availability. These criteria lead to good structural properties and allow a reduction in production and transportation costs. This study aims at demonstrating the feasibility to produce cohesive panels from these lignocellulosic fibers and their related interesting mechanical and thermal properties according to various natural binders.

Abstract

Accepted manuscrit; Two analytical techniques – online gas chromatography coupled with flame ionization detector (often used method for VOCs monitoring) versus selected ion flow tube coupled with mass spectrometry (a more recent technique based on direct mass spectrometry) – were compared in association to an ozone-based gas treatment. Selecting aldehydes as the representative VOCs, their concentrations were monitored during ozonation experiments by both techniques in parallel. Contradictory results were obtained in the presence of ozone. Aldehydes were up to 90% removed due to a reaction with ozone according to GC/FID analysis, whereas with SIFT/MS, aldehydes concentration remained at the same level during the experiments regardless of the ozone presence. In addition, it was demonstrated that the apparent aldehydes removal was affected by GC injector temperature, varying from 90% (when it was at 250 °C) to 60% (at 100 °C). Meanwhile, even when the ozonation reactor was heated to 100 °C, no aldehydes conversion was evidenced by SIFT/MS, suggesting that the GC injector temperature was not the only interference-causing parameter. The ozone-aldehyde reaction is probably catalyzed by some material of GC injector and/or column. An ozone-GC interference was therefore confirmed, making unsuitable the use of GC/FID with silicone stationary phase to monitor aldehydes in presence of high concentrations of ozone (at least 50 ppmv). On the other hand, SIFT/MS was validated as a reliable technique, which can be employed in order to measure VOC concentrations in ozonation processes.

International audience; The Atlas pistachio (Pistacia atlantica Desf.), a rustic tree distributed in different bioclimatic areas, is rapidly declining, particularly in Algeria. Among the actions to be undertaken is the launch of a restocking program. Nevertheless, Atlas pistachio seed dormancy is an obstacle limiting its germination and obtaining seedlings. The aims of the present study are to define the nature of seed germination inhibitors and to propose pretreatments that would limit their effects. Seeds were collected from three locations in Algeria. Quantitative and qualitative traits of phenolic compounds and total antioxidant activity were determined at three levels, namely, seed, epicarp and kernel. Germination was investigated in seeds with epicarp, epicarp removed, and with or without H2O2 treatment. Results showed that whole seed germination is not effective. Scarification by removing epicarp did not improve the germination rate. Chemical analyses indicated that seeds, kernel and epicarp were rich in total phenolic compounds. These compounds are known to limit seed germination in several species. Application of hydrogen peroxide induced a significant increase in seed germination rate in the three ecotypes. H2O2 caused inhibition of polyphenol compounds effects on germination The results indicated that the inhibitory effect of phenolic compounds can be found at the kernel level instead of the epicarp. However, studied genotypes indicated that only one ecotype was distinguished by seed dormancy that originated in the epicarp and kernel.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of social hierarchy on the neural electrophysiological responses to faces. In contrast with earlier EEG studies that typically manipulate social rank through competitive situations, we implemented hierarchy through occupational status and thus contrasted faces associated with high- vs. low-status (e.g. lawyer vs. waiter). Since social hierarchies are largely intertwined with gender, both female and male faces were used as stimuli, and both female and male participants were tested. The procedure consisted in presenting a status label before the face it was associated with. The analyses focused mainly on two components that have been shown to be modulated by competitive hierarchies and other social contexts, namely the N170 and the Late Positive Potential (LPP). The results indicated that gender, but not status, modulated the N170 amplitude. Moreover, high-status faces elicited larger LPP amplitude than low-status faces but this difference was driven by female participants. This gender effect is discussed in line with research showing that women and men are sensitive to different kinds of hierarchy. Methodological differences are considered to account for the discrepancy between studies that find an effect of hierarchy on the N170 and those that do not.

Abstract

International audience; Plant concretes were developed and are currently used as filling material in a timber frame. Their properties are strongly related to the bio-aggregates characteristics. In addition, since hemp shiv, the reference bio-based aggregate, has a limited availability, it is necessary to consider alternative bio-aggregates largely and locally available. Thus, this paper focused on identifying and understanding mechanisms of interaction between different bio-aggregates and mineral binders. To address this issue, the first objective was to determine the properties of five hemp shives and two alternative bio-aggregates for vegetal lightweight concrete: corn and sunflower bark particles. The study of the chemical interactions between bio-aggregates and a pozzolanic binder was conducted on model pastes mixed with filtered solutions containing bio-aggregates extractives. The mechanical properties of the paste, as well as their hydration and their mineralogical evolution were studied. In the last part, the mechanical behavior of vegetal concretes was assessed. The results highlight a strong relation between the mechanical behavior of pastes and concretes and the extractive content of the different tested bio-aggregates. Finally, pastes appeared as a relatively good model to predict the behavior of concretes by following their early age performances: setting delay and 3-day mechanical strength.

Abstract

International audience; Fractionation of lignocellulose is a fundamental step in the valorization of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin to produce various sustainable fuels and chemicals. Mineral acid fractionation is one of the most applied process and leads to the solubilization and hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses, whereas most of the lignin remains insoluble and can be separated from the extract. The obtained monomeric sugars in the acid extract are in solution with salts, sugar degradation products, and phenolic molecules. Downstream processing is required to purify the sugars and further valorize them into fuels or chemicals with the use of chemical or biochemical reactions. This purification step also allows the recycling of the mineral acid and the valorization of the sugar degradation products and the co-extracted phenolic molecules, adding value to the whole biorefinery scheme. Many purification techniques have been studied, providing several options in terms of yields, purities, and cost of the process. This review presents the conditions used for the mineral acid fractionation step and a wide variety of purification techniques applied on the obtained hydrolysate, with a focus on the associated yields and purities. Values from the literature are expressed in a standard way in order to simplify comparison between the different processes.

Abstract

International audience; This work assesses the potential of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) growing on trace element contaminated soils to produce fibres for material applications. The nettles studied in this work grew spontaneously and dominated the vegetation cover in poplar short rotation coppices planted for the phytomanagement of lands contaminated by trace elements. Two sites were studied, contaminated by Hg for the first one and a mix of As, Cd, Pb and Zn for the second one. Results show that, for the considered soils, the contaminant contents in nettle bast fibres were at low levels, comparable to those collected at unpolluted control areas. It makes it possible to consider this biomass for material use. The measured matter yield was lower than those obtained with traditional fibre crops cultivated in Europe on agricultural lands. However, the tensile properties of the bast fibres mechanically extracted without field retting or prior alkaline treatment were equal to or better than those of industrial hemp and flax, making spontaneous nettles an interesting supplement to traditional European fibre crops for material applications.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, the VOC emissions from a self-bonded coriander board originating from a coriander biorefinery, were investigated. These emissions mainly result from the presence of essential oil in the manufactured materials. Firstly, an extensive analysis of the essential oil obtained from French coriander fruits showed the presence of linalool as the major component (72%), with an absolute concentration in the essential oil of 412 g/L. A characterization of the enantiomeric distribution of linalool, which is important in terms of its bioactivity, resulted in an enantiomeric excess of (S)-linalool of 77%. Further, the presence of this volatile oil in the coriander boards was confirmed through identification of the terpenoid compounds in the VOC emission profile. The area specific emission rate of linalool and camphor was determined at 125 and 25 μg m−2 h−1, respectively, at 25 °C and 50% RH, while their emission was found to increase by a factor of 3 with an increase in temperature of 10 °C. The renewable self-bonded boards could thus present potentially interesting alternatives for less sustainable materials in the construction or agricultural industry, where they could provide a significant added value in terms of indoor air quality or storage of food and agricultural products.

Abstract

International audience; Introducing enzymes during the extrusion process has been mainly used as new pretreatment techniques in the starch degradation process and, more recently, in the second generation bioethanol production. The technique, called the bioextrusion, is a special case of reactive extrusion. Starch and lignocellulose bioextrusion examples underline the good mixing capacities as a way to initiate the enzymatic reaction in high solid content conditions. Starch bioextrusion results show a low dextrinization yield but a real effect on the polymer size decrease which allows higher and faster subsequent saccharification. It also considerably reduced the recrystallization phenomenon that limits the saccharification efficiency. Bioextrusion of lignocellulose resulted in a better sugar production. Very short residence times limit the use of bioextrusion to a pretreatment technique. However, unique flexibility of the extrusion technique allows to subsequently pretreat, in the same extruder, with physical and/or chemical constraining conditions, followed by a milder bioextrusion.

Abstract

International audience; This study deals with the selective extraction of neutral lipids from microalgae. We investigated the consequences of bypassing cell-wall disintegration before supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. Different operating parameters (use of co-solvent, pressure, and time) were tested on freeze-dried Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis oculata. The solid phase extraction technique (SPE) was used throughout the extraction process to assess variations in the yield of liberated neutral lipids, glycolipids, and phospholipids. Under operating conditions, 97% of neutral lipids were extracted from C. vulgaris using ethanol (10% v/v) as co-solvent. Neutral lipids from N. oculata represented most of the extracts (83%), whereas the proportion of glycolipids and phospholipids did not exceed 12.1% and 5.3%, respectively. Microscopic observation showed that cell wall integrity was maintained during the extraction process.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, coriander straw fiber was effectively incorporated as a reinforcing filler in polypropylene and biobased low-density polyethylene composite materials through twin-screw extrusion compounding and injection molding. Maleic anhydride-grafted copolymers were added as a coupling agent and effectively provided fiber/matrix compatibilization. With a significant reinforcing effect, resulting in a 50% increase in the flexural and tensile strength (from 19 to 28 MPa and from 12 to 17 MPa, respectively, for polypropylene composites) as compared to the native polymer, coriander straw allowed the production of 40% filled thermoplastic biocomposites with adequate mechanical properties comparable to those of commercial wood fibers, excellent durability in terms of UV and hygrothermal weathering and high potential for recycling. At the same time, such coriander biocomposites show a favorable cost structure, with 28% reduction of the granule cost as compared to wood fiber composites.

Abstract

International audience; Stakeholders are increasingly demanding transparency on food value chain sustainability performance. Today there is no standard framework to meet this demand and support defining indicators to be used to conduct an overall sustainable performance assessment. This paper mobilizes existing frameworks and indicators to build new sustainable performance metrics for actors willing to work together for their value chain sustainability. Popular methods or tools for assessing dimensions of agrifood products or activities are selected and analyzed to determine how they could contribute to this metric. The analysis aims to distinguish the sustainable development pillars addressed (economic, environmental and/or social), the frames concerned (life cycle thinking or not; multi-actor or not), and the focus of performance measured (drivers, pressures, states, impacts, responses). This categorization is then used to develop a proposal for specifications adapted to food value chain sustainability performance assessment. The applicability of the framework is demonstrated through a case study in a pork agrifood value chain.

Abstract

International audience; Polyion complex (PIC) micelles formed from the electrostatic interaction between oppositely charged polymers have been studied for their promising applications in the biomedical field as drug carriers or vectors for gene delivery. In spite of their asset of possible high drug loading, their formation process remains poorly studied. In this work, we investigate the properties of a series of PICs based on poly(ethylene oxide-b-acrylic acid) (PEO–PAA)/dendrigraft poly(L-lysine) (DGL3), using PEO–PAA with different compositions and average molecular weights. For each PEO–PAA/DGL3 pair, the complexes were characterized as a function of the ratios between acid and amine moieties combining different techniques: dynamic light scattering (DLS), flow field-flow fractionation (FlFFF), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and relaxometry. The coupling of batch techniques, i.e., DLS, SAXS, and relaxometry, together with a soft separation technique like FlFFF enabled a finer analysis to elucidate subtle details of the association process and of the polydispersity of the complexes. We show that the formation of PICs is more complex than previously described. In particular, we demonstrate that PICs with stoichiometry 1:1 may form at low ratios provided that the acidic block is long enough to neutralize the cationic dendrigraft with few polymer chains. Moreover, in such conditions, PICs with stoichiometry 1:1 often coexist with free dendritic polymers and other associated complex species.

Abstract

Ce numéro « Diversité des agricultures » est constitué d’articles issus des réflexions des groupes filières de l’Inra. Il brosse un panorama de la diversité agricole à l’œuvre dans les filières, en analyse les drivers et les déterminants, s’interroge sur la diversité comme source de résilience et en tire des enseignements en matière de besoins de recherche.; National audience; The objective of this article is to describe, without being exhaustive, the diversity of agriculture through examples of cropping systems and cultural practices, for metropolitan France and for three crop production sectors: cereals, oilseeds and legumes. The analysis of the diversity reveals ways of diversification of technical systems and cultural practices, that are strongly dependent on the diversity of added values of the sectors. With a few notable exceptions, the recommendations on the practices are vast enough to allow a diversity of cropping and farming systems, once the technological criteria of the sector have been met. Then, it is worth considering the weighting allocated to these technological criteria on the technical choices of the farmers. It also seems necessary to question the value given to the diversity by the various actors, from farmers to consumers, by estimating, in particular, the economic performance of the most diversified agricultural systems as well as the levers to increase the performances of a diversified agriculture. To strengthen resilience, it seems necessary to widen the core of knowledge on which the actors can devise new forms of diversity and to open the debate on the agricultural diversity.; L’objectif de cet article est de décrire, sans être exhaustif, la diversité des agricultures en mobilisant des exemples au niveau du système technique et des pratiques culturales, pour la France métropolitaine et pour trois filières : les céréales, les oléagineux et les légumineuses à graines. L’analyse de la diversité des agricultures montre que des voies de diversification des systèmes techniques et des pratiques culturales existent, mais que celles-ci sont fortement dépendantes de la diversité des voies de valorisation dans les filières. Au sein de ces dispositifs de valorisation, hormis quelques dispositifs spécifiques, les recommandations sur les pratiques sont suffisamment vastes pour permettre une diversité de systèmes de culture et de production, dès lors que les critères technologiques d’accès à la filière sont atteints. Il convient alors de s’interroger sur le poids de ces critères technologiques sur les choix techniques des agriculteurs. Il apparait également nécessaire de questionner la valeur donnée à la diversité par les différents acteurs des filières, de l’agriculteur au consommateur, en évaluant notamment la performance économique des systèmes agricoles les plus diversifiés ainsi que les leviers pour augmenter les performances d’une agriculture diversifiée. Il s’agit d’élargir le socle de connaissances sur lequel les acteurs pourront concevoir eux-mêmes de nouvelles formes de diversité et d’ouvrir le débat avec les acteurs des filières sur la préservation des formes de diversité des agricultures comme potentiel de résilience.

Abstract

International audience; The present study was interested on the leaf morphological and anatomical parameters characterization and variation of Artemisia herba-alba Asso population in a steppe zone of western Algeria. The results showed signifi cant micro- and macromorphological variability between individuals in the study population. The leaf anatomy brings the presence of a water reserve parenchyma in this species. This parenchyma would be a water accumulation site during dry periods and it is therefore an effective mechanism for drought adaptation. The anatomical parameters studied also show signifi cant variations. The other anatomical parameters of the leaf also have a very pronounced variability. It is shown through this study that morpho-anatomical models are established. Thus, the increase of the water reserve parenchyma thickness is accompanied by an increase of the chlorophyll parenchyma and the stomatal density, and the opposite situation was observed.

Unlike EO, hydrosol studies have been limited despite the interest of the food, cosmetic and phytotherapeutic industries to find natural preservative alternatives to synthetic ones. Aims: To evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant efficacies of combinations of essential oils (EOs) and essential oils and hydrosols (HDs) of Lippia alba, Rosmarinus officinalis, and Thymus vulgaris. Methods: The EOs and HDs were characterized by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Then, they were screened against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger using the microdilution method for the four first strains and the agar diffusion method for Aspergillus niger. Antioxidant capacity was evaluated using ABTS method. Results: Interactions between essential oils, and essential oils and hydrosols were found to be as microbicide, and for the first time, antioxidant using the fractional inhibitory concentration. When compared with individual EOs, EO-EO combinations diminished the microbicide minimum concentration. Conclusions: The Thymus vulgaris EO-HD combination, in comparison with individual extracts, diminishes by four times the MBC against Escherichia coli and decrease by half their antioxidant capacity.

A diferencia de los AE, los estudios de los HD han sido limitados a pesar del interés de las industrias alimentaria,cosmética y fitoterapéutica de encontrar alternativas naturales de conservación.Objetivos: Evaluar la eficacia antimicrobiana y antioxidante in vitro de las combinaciones de AEs, AEs e HDs de Lippia alba, Rosmarinus officinalis y Thymus vulgaris.Métodos: Los AEs e HDs fueron caracterizados por cromatografía de gases con detector de ionización en llama y cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas. Luego se realizaron pruebas de detección contra Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans y Aspergillus niger utilizando el método de microdilución para las cuatro primeras cepas y el método de difusión en agar para Aspergillus niger. La actividad antioxidante se evaluó utilizando el método ABTS.Resultados: Se encontró que las interacciones entre los aceites esenciales, aceites esenciales e hidrosoles eran microbicidas y, por primera vez,antioxidantes usando la concentración inhibidora fraccionada. Cuando se compararon con AEs individuales, las combinaciones AE-AEdisminuyeron la concentración microbicida mínima.Conclusiones La combinación de tomillo AE-HD; en comparación con los extractos individuales, disminuye en cuatro veces el MBC contraEscherichia coli y disminuye a la mitad su actividad antioxidante.

Abstract

International audience; This work aims at developing a continuous intensified green process to extract high-value added molecules from industrial hemp by-products. Hemp hurds and hemp dust were studied as potential sources for the production of two hydroxycinnamic acids (HCA): ferulic (FA) and p-coumaric acids (p-CA). Prior to pilot scale extraction, FA and p-CA analytical contents were evaluated to 0.3 and 3.5g/kg dry matter (DM) for hemp hurds and 0.1 and 0.8g/kg DM for hemp dust as potentials of reference. The continuous pilot scale extraction was then carried out using twin-screw extrusion. Mild conditions were developed: 50°C, alkaline aqueous or hydroalcoholic solvent (less than 0.5M NaOH) and low liquid to solid ratios. The mechanical effect helps the diffusion of the solvent, promotes the hydrolysis of the ester and ether bonds and favors the extraction of HCA in a short time. Yields in p-CA and FA reached 50% and 33% of the free and bound contents for hemp hurds. For hemp dust, all of p-CA was extracted whereas 60% of FA was recovered. The solid residue may be submitted to a second extraction stage with a polar solvent in order to increase HCA recovery. Extraction by extrusion could be seen as an alternative green processing technique as it is responsible for a reduction of extraction time and energy and a decrease in solvent and reagent consumptions.

Abstract

International audience; The main goal of the present study was to characterise the social cognition abilities of French children with ADHD, in terms of their understanding of people's recursive mental states and their irony comprehension. We hypothesised that these children have difficulty understanding second-order false beliefs and ironic remarks, owing to the executive dysfunction that is characteristic of ADHD. We therefore conducted an experiment in which children with ADHD and typically developing matched controls performed second-order false-belief and executive function tasks. They then listened to ironic stories and answered questions about the ironic comments and about the speakers' beliefs and attitudes. The groups differed significantly on second-order theory of mind, irony comprehension and executive functions, confirming that children with ADHD have impaired social cognition.

Abstract

International audience; A distinctive strategy for entrainer recycling is proposed in this work for acetic acid (AA) dehydration by extractive distillation by using N methyl acetamide (NMA). The use of standard entrainers such as DMF or DMSO has the main drawback of forming an azeotrope with acetic acid. However, the vapour liquid equilibrium AA – NMA exhibits a tangential pinch point at NMA end composition. The new strategy rises from the thermodynamic analysis of the ternary diagram that which involves no azeotrope. As a result, acetic acid with high purity can be obtained by the recycling of the entrainer with a relaxed constraint in its purity. Optimization studies are discussed by using two approaches: two-step optimization method with Sequential Quadratic Programming (TSOM case) and the multi-objective genetic algorithm. The multi-objective genetic algorithm allowed the computation of the optimal acetic acid dehydration with an impurity of 3% in the recycled entrainer. Significant cost savings are achieved thanks to the optimization of both columns together. Energy consumption is reduced by 12.8% and 56.9% whereas TAC is saved by 28.4% and 56.3% compared with optimal case TSOM (impurity content 1%) and a published “Case Ref” (impurity content 0.01%), respectively.

International audience; This work proposes to analyse the different aspects that should be taken into account from the fibre extraction from plants to the forming process to achieve correct part forming. The study will focus in a first extent on the impact of the textile operations leading to the yarn manufacturing. The properties of the flax fabric will then be associated to its behaviour during experimental forming and related to the possible appearence of defects such as tow buckling and solutions to prevent its appearance is widely discussed.

Abstract

Introduction In natural product research, bioassay-guided fractionation was previously widely employed but is now judged to be inadequate in terms of time and cost, particularly if only known compounds are ultimately isolated. The development of metabolomics, along with improvements in analytical tools, allows comprehensive metabolite profiling. This enables dereplication to target unknown active compounds early in the purification workflow. Objectives Starting from an ethanolic extract of violet leaves, this study aims to predict redox active compounds within a complex matrix through an untargeted metabolomics approach and correlation analysis. Methods Rapid fractionation of crude extracts was carried out followed by multivariate data analysis (MVA) of liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) profiles. In parallel, redox active properties were evaluated by the capacity of the molecules to reduce 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH.) and superoxide (O-2(.-)) radicals using UV-Vis and electron spin resonance spectroscopies (ESR), respectively. A spectral similarity network (molecular networking) was used to highlight clusters involved in the observed redox activities. Results Dereplication on Viola alba subsp. dehnhardtii highlighted a reproducible pool of redox active molecules. Polyphenols, particularly O-glycosylated coumarins and C-glycosylated flavonoids, were identified and de novo dereplicated through molecular networking. Confirmatory analyses were undertaken by thin layer chromatography (TLC)-DPPH-MS assays and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the most active compounds. Conclusion Our dereplication strategy allowed the screening of leaf extracts to highlight new biologically active metabolites in few steps with a limited amount of crude material and reduced time-consuming manipulations. Abstract

International audience; This study explored the variation in susceptibility to acetone:water plant extracts between infective larvae (L3) of ten Haemonchus contortus isolates from different geographical origin. The L3 of 10 different isolates were exposed either to the acetone:water extract of a temperate plant (Onobrychis viciifolia) or a tropical plant (Acacia pennatula) and were evaluated with the larval exsheathment inhibition assay (LEIA). The L3 of each isolate were incubated with different concentrations of each extract (0, 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 1200μg/mL of phosphate buffered saline (PBS)). After incubation, the exsheathment process of L3 was induced using a solution with sodium hypochlorite (2%) and sodium chloride (16.5%). The proportion of exsheathed L3 was determined for each concentration at 0, 20, 40 and 60min. Effective concentrations 50% (EC50) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated for every isolate with both extracts. Moreover, a resistance ratio (RR) was calculated for each extract to compare isolates, using the most susceptible isolate as the respective reference for each extract. To determine the role of polyphenols on the reported effect, a second set of incubations was made for each isolate and each extract, using the extracts at a concentration of 1200μg/mL PBS with or without polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP), a polyphenol blocking agent, and controls without extract. Abstract

The aim of this study was to highlight the behavior of the glycerol monoundecenoate (GM-C11:1) in different, diluted and concentrated states because many industrial applications such as concrete industry need some systems for the retention of water. Self-assembling properties of GM-C11:1 in water and upon solid inorganic surfaces were investigated in diluted state with surface tension experiments, AFM and Cryo-TEM studies. In concentrated state, the gelling properties in presence of water were investigated by polarized light microscopy, DSC and SAXS experiments. GM-C11:1 at 0.1mg/mL self-assembles at the liquid/air interfaces as aggregates of about 20 nm in diameter, organized into concentric forms. These aggregates were spherical globules composed of several molecules of GM-C11:1. At higher concentrations (1 mg/mL and 10 mg/mL), GM-C11:1 was able to coat uniformly liquid/air and liquid/solid interfaces. In bulk GM-C11:1 form spontaneously aggregates and vesicles. In more concentrated state, GM-C11:1 assembles into lamellar gel in water. By cross-referencing SAXS and DSC findings, we were able to distinguish between interlamellar water molecules strongly bound to GM-C11:1 and other molecules remaining unbound and considered as “mobile” water. Here, GM-C11:1 appears to be an effective molecule for surface treatments for which water retention is the key parameter.This work allowed to finalize a very efficient industrial product GM-C11:1-based, for the curing of concrete. This study on the understanding of self-assembling and the water retention properties is the beginning of an industrial success in the building and public works industry’s.

Abstract

A deoiled press cake resulting from twin-screw extrusion of coriander fruits was used as a raw material for the production of self-bonded boards. The operating parameters for thermopressing were varied and include the applied pressure (19.6–39.2 MPa), molding time (60–300 s), and molding temperature (155–205 °C). The optimized process conditions (21.6 MPa, 300 s, 205 °C) resulted in a board with a density of 1323 kg/m3, a flexural strength of 23 MPa, a modulus of elasticity of 4.4 GPa, and a thickness swelling of 31%. The thickness swelling was effectively reduced to 20% through the application of a heat treatment at 200 °C after thermopressing. A variation of the moisture content of the press cake between 3 and 8% showed that increased moisture contents do not lead to improved mechanical properties of the resulting board and further induce internal fracturing of the board during thermopressing. The manufactured binderless boards may act as environmentally friendly alternatives to commercial wood-based boards such as oriented strand board and particleboard.

Abstract

International audience; Nowadays, eco-designing products is increasingly practiced. The next challenge for sustain- ability is to optimize production processes. Biorefi neries are particularly concerned with this improve- ment, because they use renewable resources. To identify the contribution of transformation processes to the overall environmental impacts, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) appears as the adequate method. A literature review highlights that LCA is mainly performed on biorefi neries to compare biomass feed- stocks between them and to a fossil reference. Another part of environmental LCA compares the impacts of different processing routes. Nevertheless, these evaluations concern already designed pro- cesses. Generally, processes are considered as a unique operation in assessments. However, some criteria like operating can notably modify environmental burdens. The eco-design of biorefi nery pro- cesses can be guided by coupling process simulation to LCA. This method has been emerging in the chemical sector in recent years. Consequently, this paper proposes a new methodological approach to assessing the complete sustainability of biorefi nery processes, since its fi rst design stages. In addi- tion to coupling process simulation and environmental LCA, the other pillars of sustainability will be assessed. Indeed, Life Cycle Costing and Social Life Cycle Assessment can be performed to obtain an integrated methodological framework. The simultaneous optimization of the environmental, economic, and social performances of the process can lead to antagonist ways of improving. Consequently, compromises should be realized. Thereby, the multi-objective optimization can be accomplished by a metaheuristic method supported by a decision-making tool. Finally, the main limits of this method and some perspectives and ways for improving are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The development of efficient bioremediation techniques to reduce aquatic pollutant load in natural sediment is one of the current challenges in ecological engineering. A nature-based solution for metal bioremediation is proposed through a combination of bioturbation and phytoremediation processes in experimental indoor microcosms. The invertebrates Tubifex tubifex (Oligochaeta Tubificidae) was used as an active ecological engineer for bioturbation enhancement. The riparian plant species Typha latifolia was selected for its efficiency in phyto-accumulating pollutants from sediment. Phytoremediation efficiency was estimated by using cadmium as a conservative pollutant known to bio-accumulate in plants, and initially introduced in the overlying water (20 μg Cd/L of cadmium nitrate – Cd(NO3)2·4H2O). Biological sediment reworking by invertebrates' activity was quantified using luminophores (inert particulates). Our results showed that bioturbation caused by tubificid worms' activity followed the bio-conveying transport model with a downward vertical velocity (V) of luminophores ranging from 16.7 ± 4.5 to 18.5 ± 3.9 cm·year− 1. The biotransport changed the granulometric properties of the surface sediments, and this natural process was still efficient under cadmium contamination. The highest value of Cd enrichment coefficient for plant roots was observed in subsurface sediment layer (below 1 cm to 5 cm depth) with tubificids addition. We demonstrated that biotransport changed the distribution of cadmium across the sediment column as well as it enhanced the pumping of this metal from the surface to the anoxic sediment layers, thereby increasing the bioaccumulation of cadmium in the root system of Typha latifolia. This therefore highlights the potential of bioturbation as a tool to be considered in future as integrated bioremediation strategies of metallic polluted sediment in aquatic ecosystems.

International audience; The sample matrix can enhance the gas chromatography signal of pesticide residues relative to that obtained with the same concentration of pesticide in solvent. This paper is related to negative matrix effects observed in coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry ion trap (GC/MS2) quantification of pesticides in concentrated extracts of apple peel prepared by the Quick Easy Cheap Effective Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS) method. It is focused on the pesticides most frequently used on the apple varieties studied, throughout the crop cycle, right up to harvest, to combat pests and diseases and to improve fruit storage properties. Extracts from the fleshy receptacle (flesh), the epiderm (peel) and fruit of three apple varieties were studied by high-performance thin-layer chromatography hyphenated with UV–vis light detection (HPTLC/UV visible). Abstract

International audience; Polymer self-assemblies joining oppositely charged chains, known as polyion complexes (PICs), have been formed using poly(ethyleneoxide – b – acrylic acid)/poly(l-lysine), poly(ethyleneoxide-b-acrylic acid)/dendrigraft poly(l-lysine) and poly[(3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride – b – N – isopropyl acrylamide]/poly(acrylic acid). The self-assemblies have been first characterized in batch by Dynamic Light Scattering. In a second step, their analysis by Flow Field-Flow Fractionation techniques (FlFFF) was examined. They were shown to be very sensitive to shearing, especially during the focus step of the fractionation, and this led to an incompatibility with asymmetrical FlFFF. On the other hand, Frit Inlet FlFFF proved to be very efficient to observe them, either in its symmetrical (FI-FlFFF) or asymmetrical version (FI-AsFlFFF). Conditions of elution were found to optimize the sample recovery in pure water. Spherical self-assemblies were detected, with a size range between 70–400nm depending on the polymers. Compared to batch DLS, FI-AsFlFFF clearly showed the presence of several populations in some cases. The influence of salt on poly(ethyleneoxide-b-acrylic acid) (PEO-PAA) 6000-3000/dendrigraft poly(l-lysine) (DGL 3) was also assessed in parallel in batch DLS and FI-AsFlFFF. Batch DLS revealed a first process of swelling of the self-assembly for low concentrations up to 0.8M followed by the dissociation. FI-AsFlFFF furthermore indicated a possible ejection of DGL3 from the PIC assembly for concentrations as low as 0.2M, which could not be observed in batch DLS.

Abstract

12th International Conference on Gas-Liquid and Gas-Liquid-Solid Reactor Engineering; International audience; The aim of this work is to study continuous counter-current absorption of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) by an oil–water emulsion. This process enables the treatment of hydrophilic and hydrophobic VOC within a gaseous effluent emitted by chemical or food processing industries. Toluene was chosen as the pollutant in this work because of its hydrophobicity and its widespread use in chemical industries. As organic solvents for VOC absorption, vegetable oils were proposed for the treatment process to reduce the impact on the environment. The absorbing oil was selected for its good absorption capacities, its chemical and thermal stability and its low cost. To test their impact on the operational efficiency of the absorption process, numerous parameters were varied, such as liquid and gas flow rates, temperature and nozzle type. Thermal regeneration (120 °C) of the oil was proposed and tested on the experimental device. No impact on efficiency was noted, even after several regenerations. Finally a model was determined to predict the effects of operational conditions on the absorption efficiency of an emulsion.

Abstract

International audience; The self-assembling properties of glycerol esters in water are well known. Still, few data on glycerol monoesters of undecylenic acid are available. The aim of this study was to highlight the behavior of glycerol monoundecenoate (GM-C11:1) in different diluted and concentrated states. Its self-assembling properties in water and upon solid inorganic surfaces were investigated in the diluted state using surface tension experiments, atomic force microscopy, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy studies. In the concentrated state, the gelling properties in the presence of water were investigated using polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments. GM-C11:1 at 100 mg/L self-assembles at the liquid/air interfaces as aggregates of approximately 20 nm in diameter, organized into concentric forms. These aggregates are spherical globules composed of several molecules of GM-C11:1. At higher concentrations (1000 and 104 mg/L), GM-C11:1 is able to uniformly coat liquid/air and liquid/solid interfaces. In bulk, GM-C11:1 forms spontaneously aggregates and vesicles. In a more concentrated state, GM-C11:1 assembles into lamellar Lβ and Lα forms in water. By cross-referencing SAXS and DSC findings, we were able to distinguish between interlamellar water molecules strongly bound to GM-C11:1 and other molecules remaining unbound and considered to be “mobile” water. The percentage of water strongly bound was proportional to the percentage of GM-C11:1 in the system. In this case, GM-C11:1 appears to be an effective molecule for surface treatments for which water retention is important.

Abstract

International audience; Vegetable oils present a valuable class of bioresources with applications in both food and non-food industries and a production that has been steadily increasing over the past twenty years. Their extraction from oilseeds is a key process, as it exerts a strong impact on the resulting oil characteristics and quality. In view of the recent pressure towards sustainability, oilseed processing industries are taking renewed interest in thermomechanical pressing as a means to obtain high quality oils. This work focuses on twin-screw extrusion for vegetable oil extraction and reviews recent technological advancements and research challenges for the design and optimization of novel oil extraction processes. It comprises a critical analysis of the application of twin-screw extruders against their more conventional single-screw counterparts. Further, a comprehensive overview of the key parameters influencing the process performance is provided, while considerable attention is given to the development of innovative green extraction processes using twin-screw extrusion.

Abstract

International audience; The casein micelle is a highly aggregated colloid consisting of phosphoproteins and minerals, in particular calcium and phosphate. Its properties are affected by physico-chemical changes which provide possibilities for the development of new casein aggregates (CAs) with novel functionalities. The aim of this study was to investigate the emulsifying and emulsion-stabilizing capacity of gradually demineralized CAs in model dairy emulsions. Tri sodium citrate (TSC) was used to remove calcium and inorganic phosphate from pure casein micelles in order to produce four suspensions of differently demineralized CAs. Two types of milkfat-in-suspension (30:70 v/v) emulsions were then prepared to study the emulsifying and emulsion-stabilizing capacity of these CAs separately. Casein micelles were progressively demineralized (from 24 to 81% calcium reduction) and dissociated with the increase in TSC concentration. Three distinct populations of particles (micelle-like aggregates, sodium caseinate-like aggregates and casein monomers) were present in every suspension in different proportions. The smaller CAs had better emulsifying capacity and similar surface activity according to interfacial studies. The state of aggregation of the CAs was thus the main factor that controlled their emulsifying capacity. However, the emulsions formed with these smaller aggregates were less stable against creaming and flocculation, but still resisted coalescence under our storage conditions (21 days at 50 °C). The properties of the interfacial casein layers did not depend on the aggregation state of the CAs used to form the emulsions. The differences in instability were attributed to the nature of the non-adsorbed CAs and storage conditions.
