Abstract: We study the convergence in distribution norms in the Central Limit Theorem for non identical distributed random variables that is \[ \varepsilon _{n}(f):={\mathbb{E} }\Big (f\Big (\frac 1{\sqrt n}\sum _{i=1}^{n}Z_{i}\Big )\Big )-{\mathbb{E} }\big (f(G)\big )\rightarrow 0 \] where $Z_{i}$, $i\in \mathbb{N} $, are centred independent random variables and $G$ is a Gaussian random variable. We also consider local developments (Edgeworth expansion). This kind of results is well understood in the case of smooth test functions $f$. If one deals with measurable and bounded test functions (convergence in total variation distance), a well known theorem due to Prohorov shows that some regularity condition for the law of the random variables $Z_{i}$, $i\in{\mathbb {N}} $, on hand is needed. Essentially, one needs that the law of $Z_{i}$ is locally lower bounded by the Lebesgue measure (Doeblin’s condition). This topic is also widely discussed in the literature. Our main contribution is to discuss convergence in distribution norms, that is to replace the test function $f$ by some derivative $\partial _{\alpha }f$ and to obtain upper bounds for $\varepsilon _{n}(\partial _{\alpha }f)$ in terms of the infinite norm of $f$. Some applications are also discussed: an invariance principle for the occupation time for random walks, small balls estimates and expected value of the number of roots of trigonometric polynomials with random coefficients.

Abstract: This thesis develops algorithms for rail transportation problems, conducted in relationship with the company Eurotunnel which operates the tunnel under the Channel. This partnership is a scientific chair with the École des Ponts et Chaussées, where this thesis was realized. We study three topics throughout the thesis: the first one is an operationalproblem faced by Eurotunnel, whereas the two other ones are prospective and theoretical problems inspired by their process.The planning process for rail transportation can be divided into several phases (demand estimation, line planning, scheduling of the departure times, rolling stock and crew planning). In a first part, we focus on the scheduling phase on a time interval, applied to the specific case of Eurotunnel. The objective is to compute the departure times of the trains for each of the two stations (Calais in France and Folkestone in England), satisfying operation constraints (security, loading, ...) and commercial agreements with their partners (Eurostar, ...). Moreover, taking into account the delays in the scheduling phase is essential to limit the propagation of the disturbances from train to train in the network. We develop scheduling algorithms for Eurotunnel taking into account the operation and commercial constraints, and the random distributions of the delays for each train. These algorithms use standard tools of Operations Research to model and solve these optimization problems.Pricing is a main issue for transportation companies. Many algorithms have been proposed to help airline companies to define optimized prices of the plane tickets for different classes of passengers. In a second part, we apply some standard pricing frameworks (discrete choice models) in order to optimize in a global way the prices and the departure times of the trains for rail transportation companies. Standard tools of stochastic optimization, discrete choice models, and some heuristics are used in our algorithms to compute the best possible solutions in a limited computation time.We focus in a last part on a class of transportation problems, inspired form Eurotunnel. We give efficient algorithms to solve exactly or to approximate the optimal solutions of these problems. These algorithms give an upper bound of the time complexity of this class of problems. The problems studied consist in scheduling the departure times of shuttles on a fixed trip, to transport passengers, arriving continuously at an initial station, to a given destination. The shuttles are potentially allowed to perform several rotations to transport several groups of passengers. The objective is to minimize the waiting time of the passengers before the depart of their shuttle. Original combinations of convex optimization and graph theory (shortest path problems) are used in our algorithms, Cette thèse développe des algorithmes pour des problèmes de transport ferroviaire et est réalisée en partenariat avec l'entreprise Eurotunnel qui exploite le tunnel sous la Manche. Ce partenariat s'est établi sous la forme d'une chaire avec l'École des Ponts où cette thèse a été menée. Nous développons trois sujets dans cette thèse: le premier est un problème opérationnel rencontré par Eurotunnel, les deux autres sont plus prospectifs et théoriques, et sont inspirés des problèmes de transport ferroviaire d'Eurotunnel.Le processus de création de grilles horaires pour le transport ferroviaire se découpe en plusieurs phases (estimation de la demande, détermination du réseau, planification des départs, affectation des trains et du personnel). Nous nous intéressons dans une première partie à la phase de planification des départs des trains sur un intervalle temporel, appliquée au cas spécifique d'Eurotunnel. L'objectif est de calculer les horaires des départs des trains depuis chacune des deux stations (Coquelles en France et Folkestone en Angleterre) en respectant des contraintes d'exploitation (sécurité, chargement, ...) et des accords commerciaux signés avec leurs partenaires (Eurostar, ...). De plus, la prise en compte des retards dès la planification des départs est primordiale pour limiter la propagation des perturbations de train en train sur le réseau. Nous avons développé des algorithmes de planification pour Eurotunnel tenant compte des contraintes du réseau et de la probabilité de retard pour chaque train. Ces algorithmes utilisent des outils standard de la Recherche Opérationnelle pour modéliser et résoudre ces problèmes d'optimisation.La tarification des billets est un enjeu majeur pour les entreprises de transport. Pour les compagnies aériennes, de nombreux algorithmes ont été étudiés pour définir le prix optimal des billets pour différentes classes de passagers. Nous appliquons dans une deuxième partie des méthodes standard de tarification (modèles de choix discrets) afin d'optimiser de manière globale les prix et les horaires des départs pour des entreprises de transport ferroviaire. Des outils classiques de l'optimisation stochastique, des modèles de choix discrets et des heuristiques sont utilisés dans nos algorithmes pour donner les meilleures solutions possibles en un temps de calcul limité.Nous nous intéressons dans une dernière partie à une classe de problèmes de transport, inspirés de ceux rencontrés par Eurotunnel, en donnant des algorithmes efficaces de résolution exacte ou approchée. Ces algorithmes permettent de donner une borne supérieure de la complexité temporelle de ces problèmes. La classe de problèmes étudiés consiste en la planification des départs de navettes sur une ligne fixe, pour transporter d'une station A vers une station B des usagers arrivant de manière continue. Les navettes sont éventuellement autorisées à faire de multiples rotations pour transporter plusieurs vagues d'usagers. L'objectif est de limiter le temps d'attente des passagers avant le départ de leur navette. Des combinaisons originales de l'optimisation convexe et de la théorie des graphes (problèmes de plus court chemin) sont utilisées dans nos algorithmes

Abstract: This thesis report deals with the homogenization in space and time of some first order Hamilton-Jacobi equations. It contains two contributions. The corresponding equations are derived from traffic flow modelling. We finally present some results of almost periodic homogenization. In the first chapter, we consider a one dimensional pursuit law with delay which is derived from traffic flow modelling. It takes the form of an infinite system of first order coupled delayed equations. Each equation describes the motion of a driver who interacts with the preceding one: such a model is referred to as a ``follow-the-leader" model. We take into account the reaction time of drivers. We derive a macroscopic model, namely a Hamilton-Jacobi equation, by a homogenization process for reaction times that are below an explicit threshold. The key idea is to show, that below this threshold, a strict comparison principle holds for the infinite system. Above this threshold, we show that collisions can occur. In a second time, for well-chosen dynamics and higher reaction times, we show that there exist some microscopic pursuit laws that do not lead to the previous macroscopic model. Such a law is here derived as a perturbation of the stationnary solution, for which all the vehicles are equally spaced at initial times. The second chapter is dedicated to the homogenization of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation for traffic lights. We consider an infinite road where lights are equally spaced and with a constant phase shift between two lights. This model takes the form of a first order Hamilton-Jacobi equation with an Hamiltonian that is discontinuous in the space variable and the notion of viscosity solution is the one introduced by C. Imbert and R. Monneau (2017). Each light is modelled as a time-periodic flux limiter and the traffic flow between two lights corresponds to the classical LWR model. The global Hamiltonian will be time-periodic but not periodic in space for a general phase shift. We first show that the rescaled solution converges toward the solution of the expected macroscopic model where the effective Hamiltonian depends on the phase shift. In a second time, numerical simulations are used to analyse the effect of the phase shift on the effective Hamiltonian and to reveal some properties of the effective Hamiltonian from the numerical observations. In the third chapter, we are interested in some homogenization problems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations within the almost periodic setting which generalizes the usual periodic one. The first problem is the evolutionary version of the work cite {ishii2000almost}, with the same stationary Hamiltonian. The second problem has already been solved in the second chapter but we use here almost periodic arguments for the time periodic and space almost periodic Hamiltonian. We only study the ergodicity of the associated cell problems. We finally discuss open problems, the first one concerning a space and time almost periodic Hamiltonian and the second one being a microscopic model for traffic flow modelling where the Hamiltonian is almost periodic in space, Cette thèse contient deux contributions à l’homogénéisation en espace-temps des équations de Hamilton-Jacobi du premier ordre. Ces équations sont en lien avec la modélisation du trafic routier. Enfin, sont présentés des résultats d’homogénéisation en milieu presque périodique. Le premier chapitre est consacré à l’homogénéisation d’un système infini d’équations différentielles couplées avec temps de retard. Ce système provient ici d’un modèle microscopique de trafic routier simple. Les conducteurs se suivent sur une route rectiligne infinie et l’on tient compte de leur temps de réaction. On suppose que la vitesse de chaque conducteur est une fonction de l’interdistance avec le conducteur qui le précède: on parle d’un modèle du type “follow-the-leader”. Grâce à un principe de comparaison strict, on montre la convergence vers un modèle macroscopique pour des temps de réaction inférieurs à une valeur critique. Dans un second temps, on exhibe un contre-exemple à l’homogénéisation pour un temps de réaction supérieur à cette valeur critique, pour des conditions initiales particulières. Pour cela, on perturbe la solution stationnaire dans laquelle les véhicules sont tous équidistants aux instants initiaux. Le second chapitre porte sur l’homogénéisation d’une équation de Hamilton-Jacobi dont l’Hamiltonien est discontinu en espace. Le modèle de trafic associé est une route rectiligne comportant une infinité de feux tricolores. Ces feux sont supposés identiques, équidistants et le déphasage entre deux feux successifs est supposé constant. On étudie l’influence à grande échelle de ce déphasage sur le trafic. On distingue la portion de route libre, qui sera représentée par un modèle macroscopique, et les feux, qui seront modélisés par des limiteurs de flux périodiques en temps. Le cadre théorique est celui par C. Imbert et R. Monneau (2017) pour les équations de Hamilton-Jacobi sur réseaux. L’étude se décompose en l’homogénéisation théorique, où l’Hamiltonien effectif dépend du déphasage, puis l’obtention de propriétés qualitatives de cet Hamiltonien à l’aide d’observations via des simulations numériques. Le troisième chapitre présente des résultats d’homogénéisation en milieu presque périodique. On étudie tout d’abord un problème d’évolution avec un Hamiltonien stationnaire, presque périodique en espace. À l’aide d’arguments presque périodiques, on effectue dans un second temps une nouvelle preuve du résultat d’homogénéisation du second chapitre. L’Hamiltonien est alors périodique en temps et presque périodique en espace. Sont également présentes des questions encore ouvertes, notamment dans le cas où l’Hamiltonien est presque périodique en temps-espace, et dans le cas d’un modèle de trafic où les feux sont assez proches, avec donc un modèle microscopique entre les feux

Abstract: Several misprints and small mistakes were in the initial version. They have been corrected. Following the recent experimental realization of synthetic gauge magnetic forces, Jean Dalibard adressed the question whether the adiabatic ansatz could be math- ematically justified for a model of an atom in 2 internal states, shone by a quasi resonant laser beam. In this paper, we derive rigorously the asymptotic model guessed by the physicists, and show that this asymptotic analysis contains the in- formation about the presence of vortices. Surprisingly the main difficulties do not come from the nonlinear part but from the linear Hamiltonian. More precisely, the analysis of the nonlinear minimization problem and its asymptotic reduction to simpler ones, relies on an accurate partition of low and high frequencies (or mo- menta). This requires to reconsider carefully previous mathematical works about the adiabatic limit. Although the estimates are not sharp, this asymptotic analysis provides a good insight about the validity of the asymptotic picture, with respect to the size of the many parameters initially put in the complete model., Comment: 76 pages

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we develop a reduced-basis approach for the efficient computation of parametrized expected values, for a large number of parameter values, using the control variate method to reduce the variance. Two algorithms are proposed to compute online, through a cheap reduced-basis approximation, the control variates for the computation of a large number of expectations of a functional of a parametrized Ito stochastic process (solution to a parametrized stochastic differential equation). For each algorithm, a reduced basis of control variates is pre-computed offline, following a so-called greedy procedure, which minimizes the variance among a trial sample of the output parametrized expectations. Numerical results in situations relevant to practical applications (calibration of volatility in option pricing, and parameter-driven evolution of a vector field following a Langevin equation from kinetic theory) illustrate the efficiency of the method.

Abstract: International audience; We consider stochastic differential equations on the whole Euclidean space possessing a scalar invariant along their solutions. The stochastic dynamics therefore evolves on a hypersurface of the ambient space. Using orthogonal coordinate systems, we show the existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions of the Kolmogorov equation under some ellipticity conditions over the invariant hypersurfaces. If we assume, moreover, the existence of an invariant measure, we show the exponential convergence of the solution towards its average. In the second part, we consider numerical approximation of the stochastic differential equation, and show the convergence and numerical ergodicity of a class of projected schemes. In the context of molecular dynamics, this yields numerical schemes that are ergodic with respect to the microcanonical measure over isoenergy surfaces.

Abstract: International audience; The detection and identification of buried inhomogeneities using electromagnetic waves are of great importance for nondestructive testing in geophysical, civil engineering, military, or humanitarian applications. The approach described here uses a linear inversion algorithm based on diffraction tomography to process the backscattered field signal generated by the buried inhomogeneities, measured over a probing area, for computation of a tomographic image of the ground. The technique has been extended to cater for time pulse (synthetic pulse or real pulse) illumination and to incorporate the near-field radiation pattern transmitted by a broadband antenna. The backscattered field is measured at various locations with a receiving antenna for different positions of the transmitting antenna. The main advantages of such a method are the use of explicit formulas for solving the imaging problem and the possibility of rapid image display thanks to the use of Fast Fourier transform to implement the reconstruction algorithms on PCs. First, a number of tomographic reconstructions of buried objects are given for situations of practical interest. Results of numerical simulations with a Rayleigh incident pulse in the frequency band [0.3,3.0] GHz and the use of a bow tie antenna in the frequency band [0.3,1.3] GHz are presented. Second, tomographic reconstructions of buried objects are presented and discussed, to demonstrate the influence of object dielectric properties versus soil electromagnetic parameters.

Abstract: International audience; We consider non-reversible perturbations of reversible diffusions that do not alter the invariant distribution and we ask whether there exists an optimal perturbation such that the rate of convergence to equilibrium is maximized. We solve this problem for the case of linear drift by proving the existence of such optimal perturbations and by providing an easily implementable algorithm for constructing them. We discuss in particular the role of the prefactor in the exponential convergence estimate. Our rigorous results are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Abstract: As proved recently in [PT], for varieties $X^{r+1}\subset \mathbb P^N$ such that through $n\geq 2$ general points there passes an irreducible curve $C$ of degree $\delta\geq n-1$ we have $N\leq \pi(r,n,\delta+r(n-1)+2)$, where $\pi(r,n,d)$ is the Castelnuovo-Harris bound function for the geometric genus of an irreducible non-degenerate variety $Y^r\subset\mathbb P^{n+r-1}$ of degree $d$. A lot of examples of varieties as in the title and attaining the previous bound for the embedding dimension are constructed from Castelnuovo varieties and were thus dubbed {\it of Castelnuovo type} in [PT], where it is also proved that all extremal varieties as above are of this kind, except possibly when $n>2$, $r>1$ and $\delta=2n-3$. One of the main results of the paper is the classification of extremal varieties $X^{r+1}\subset \mathbb P^{2r+3}$ 3-covered by twisted cubics and not of Castelnuovo type. Interesting examples are provided by the so called {\it twisted cubics over complex Jordan algebras of rank 3}, as pointed out by Mukai. By relating to an extremal variety 3-covered by twisted cubics, via tangential projection, a quadro-quadric Cremona transformation in $\mathbb P^r$ we are able to classify all these object either for $r\leq 4$ or under the smoothness assumption. In the last case we obtain that they are either smooth rational normal scrolls (hence of Castelnuovo type) or the Segre embeddings of $\p^1\times Q^r$ or one of the four Lagrangian Grassmannians. We end by discussing some open problems pointing towards the equivalence of these apparently unrelated objects: extremal varieties 3-covered by twisted cubics, quadro-quadric Cremona transformations of $\mathbb P^r$ and complex Jordan algebras of dimension $r+1$ and of rank three., Comment: 30 pages; accepted for publication in Comm. Abstract: We develop an efficient sampling and free energy calculation technique within the adaptive biasing potential (ABP) framework. By mollifying the density of states we obtain an approximate free energy and an adaptive bias potential that is computed directly from the population along the coordinates of the free energy. Because of the mollifier, the bias potential is "nonlocal" and its gradient admits a simple analytic expression. A single observation of the reaction coordinate can thus be used to update the approximate free energy at every point within a neighborhood of the observation. This greatly reduces the equilibration time of the adaptive bias potential. This approximation introduces two parameters: strength of mollification and the zero of energy of the bias potential. While we observe that the approximate free energy is a very good estimate of the actual free energy for a large range of mollification strength, we demonstrate that the errors associated with the mollification may be removed via deconvolution. The zero of energy of the bias potential, which is easy to choose, influences the speed of convergence but not the limiting accuracy. This method is simple to apply to free energy or mean force computation in multiple dimensions and does not involve second derivatives of the reaction coordinates, matrix manipulations nor on-the-fly adaptation of parameters. For the alanine dipeptide test case, the new method is found to gain as much as a factor of ten in efficiency as compared to two common adaptive biasing force formulations and it is shown to be as efficient as well-tempered metadynamics with the post-process deconvolution giving a clear advantage to the mollified density of states method., 4 pages, 1 figure

Abstract: Adaptive Monte Carlo methods are very efficient techniques designed to tune simulation estimators on-line. In this work, we present an alternative to stochastic approximation to tune the optimal change of measure in the context of importance sampling for normal random vectors. Unlike stochastic approximation, which requires very fine tuning in practice, we propose to use sample average approximation and deterministic optimization techniques to devise a robust and fully automatic variance reduction methodology. The same samples are used in the sample optimization of the importance sampling parameter and in the Monte Carlo computation of the expectation of interest with the optimal measure computed in the previous step. We prove that this highly dependent Monte Carlo estimator is convergent and satisfies a central limit theorem with the optimal limiting variance. Abstract: In a recent article (Canc\`es, Deleurence and Lewin, Commun. Math. Phys., 281 (2008), pp. 129-177), we have rigorously derived, by means of bulk limit arguments, a new variational model to describe the electronic ground state of insulating or semiconducting crystals in the presence of local defects. In this so-called reduced Hartree-Fock model, the ground state electronic density matrix is decomposed as $\gamma = \gamma^0_{\rm per} + Q_{\nu,\epsilon_{\rm F}}$, where $\gamma^0_{\rm per}$ is the ground state density matrix of the host crystal and $Q_{\nu,\epsilon_{\rm F}}$ the modification of the electronic density matrix generated by a modification $\nu$ of the nuclear charge of the host crystal, the Fermi level $\epsilon_{\rm F}$ being kept fixed. The purpose of the present article is twofold. First, we study more in details the mathematical properties of the density matrix $Q_{\nu,\epsilon_{\rm F}}$ (which is known to be a self-adjoint Hilbert-Schmidt operator on $L^2(\R^3)$). We show in particular that if $\int_{\RR^3} \nu \neq 0$, $Q_{\nu,\epsilon_{\rm F}}$ is not trace-class. Moreover, the associated density of charge is not in $L^1(\R^3)$ if the crystal exhibits anisotropic dielectric properties. These results are obtained by analyzing, for a small defect $\nu$, the linear and nonlinear terms of the resolvent expansion of $Q_{\nu,\epsilon_{\rm F}}$. Second, we show that, after an appropriate rescaling, the potential generated by the microscopic total charge (nuclear plus electronic contributions) of the crystal in the presence of the defect, converges to a homogenized electrostatic potential solution to a Poisson equation involving the macroscopic dielectric permittivity of the crystal. Abstract: International audience; Spiking neuron models are hybrid dynamical systems combining differential equations and discrete resets, which generate complex dynamics. Several two-dimensional spiking models have been recently introduced, modelling the membrane potential and an additional variable, and where spikes are defined by the divergence of the membrane potential variable to infinity. These simple models reproduce a large number of electrophysiological features displayed by real neurons, such as spike frequency adaptation and bursting. The patterns of spikes, which are the discontinuity points of the hybrid dynamical system, have been mainly studied numerically. Here we show that the spike patterns are related to orbits under a discrete map, the adaptation map, and we study its dynamics and bifurcations. Regular spiking corresponds to fixed points of the adaptation map while bursting corresponds to periodic orbits. We find that the models undergo a transition to chaos via a cascade of period adding bifurcations. Finally, we discuss the physiological relevance of our results with regard to electrophysiological classes.

Abstract: International audience; The Hartree-Fock exchange operator is an integral operator arising in the Hartree-Fock method and replaced by a multiplicative operator (a local potential) in Kohn-Sham density functional theory. This article presents a detailed analysis of the mathematical properties of various local approximations to the nonlocal Hartree-Fock exchange operator, including the Slater potential, the optimized effective potential (OEP), the Krieger-Li-Iafrate (KLI) and common energy-denominator approximations (CEDA) to the OEP, and the effective local potential (ELP). In particular, we show that the Slater, KLI, CEDA potentials and the ELP can all be defined as solutions to certain variational problems. We also provide a rigorous derivation of the integral OEP equation and establish the existence of a solution to a system of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations defining the Slater approximation to the Hartree-Fock equations.

Abstract: We investigate mathematically a nonlinear approximation type approach recently introduced in [A. Ammar et al., J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech., 2006] to solve high dimensional partial differential equations. We show the link between the approach and the greedy algorithms of approximation theory studied e.g. in [R.A. DeVore and V.N. Temlyakov, Adv. Comput. Math., 1996]. On the prototypical case of the Poisson equation, we show that a variational version of the approach, based on minimization of energies, converges. On the other hand, we show various theoretical and numerical difficulties arising with the non variational version of the approach, consisting of simply solving the first order optimality equations of the problem. Several unsolved issues are indicated in order to motivate further research.

Abstract: In this paper, in the particular case of a concave flux function, we are interested in the long time behavior of the nonlinear process associated in [Methodol. Comput. Appl. Probab. 2 (2000) 69–91] to the one-dimensional viscous scalar conservation law. We also consider the particle system obtained by replacing the cumulative distribution function in the drift coefficient of this nonlinear process by the empirical cumulative distribution function. We first obtain a trajectorial propagation of chaos estimate which strengthens the weak convergence result obtained in [8] without any convexity assumption on the flux function. Then Poincaré inequalities are used to get explicit estimates concerning the long time behavior of both the nonlinear process and the particle system.

Abstract: International audience; Recently the 'toolkit' discretization introduced to accelerate the numerical resolution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation arising in quantum optimal control problems demonstrated good results on a large range of models. However, when coupling this class of methods with the so-called monotonically convergent algorithms, numerical instabilities affect the convergence of the discretized scheme. We present an adaptation of the 'toolkit' method which preserves the monotonicity of the procedure. The theoretical properties of the new algorithm are illustrated by numerical simulations.

Abstract: In this article, we analyze the stability of various numerical schemes for diﬀerential models of viscoelastic ﬂuids. More precisely, we consider the prototypical Oldroyd-B model, for which a free energy dissipation holds, and we show under which assumptions such a dissipation is also satisﬁed for the numerical scheme. Among the numerical schemes we analyze, we consider some discretizations based on the log-formulation of the Oldroyd-B system proposed by Fattal and Kupferman, which have been reported to be numerically more stable than discretizations of the usual formulation in some benchmark problems. Our analysis gives some tracks to understand these numerical observations.

Abstract: This article is concerned with the mathematical analysis of the Kohn-Sham and extended Kohn-Sham models, in the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) frameworks. After recalling the mathematical derivation of the Kohn-Sham and extended Kohn-Sham LDA and GGA models from the Schr\"odinger equation, we prove that the extended Kohn-Sham LDA model has a solution for neutral and positively charged systems. We then prove a similar result for the spin-unpolarized Kohn-Sham GGA model for two-electron systems, by means of a concentration-compactness argument.

Abstract: In this work, a Reduced Basis (RB) approach is used to solve a large number of Boundary Value Problems (BVPs) parametrized by a stochastic input — expressed as a Karhunen-Loève expansion — in order to compute outputs that are smooth functionals of the random solution fields. The RB method proposed here for variational problems parametrized by stochastic coefficients bears many similarities to the RB approach developed previously for deterministic systems. However, the stochastic framework requires the development of new a posteriori estimates for “statistical” outputs — such as the first two moments of integrals of the random solution fields; these error bounds, in turn, permit efficient sampling of the input stochastic parameters and fast reliable computation of the outputs in particular in the many-query context.

Abstract: We present a new variational model for computing the electronic first-order density matrix of a crystalline material in presence of a local defect. A natural way to obtain variational discretizations of this model is to expand the difference Q between the density matrix of the defective crystal and the density matrix of the perfect crystal, in a basis of precomputed maximally localized Wannier functions of the reference perfect crystal. Abstract: We propose a formulation of adaptive computation of free energy differences, in the ABF or nonequilibrium metadynamics spirit, using conditional distributions of samples of configurations which evolve in time. This allows to present a truly unifying framework for these methods, and to prove convergence results for certain classes of algorithms. From a numerical viewpoint, a parallel implementation of these methods is very natural, the replicas interacting through the reconstructed free energy. We show how to improve this parallel implementation by resorting to some selection mechanism on the replicas. Abstract: This article is concerned with the derivation and the mathematical study of a new mean-field model for the description of interacting electrons in crystals with local defects. We work with a reduced Hartree-Fock model, obtained from the usual Hartree-Fock model by neglecting the exchange term. First, we recall the definition of the self-consistent Fermi sea of the perfect crystal, which is obtained as a minimizer of some periodic problem, as was shown by Catto, Le Bris and Lions. We also prove some of its properties which were not mentioned before. Then, we define and study in details a nonlinear model for the electrons of the crystal in the presence of a defect. We use formal analogies between the Fermi sea of a perturbed crystal and the Dirac sea in Quantum Electrodynamics in the presence of an external electrostatic field. The latter was recently studied by Hainzl, Lewin, S\'er\'e and Solovej, based on ideas from Chaix and Iracane. This enables us to define the ground state of the self-consistent Fermi sea in the presence of a defect. Abstract: International audience; Numerical simulations of (bilinear) quantum control often rely on either monotonically convergent algorithms or tracking schemes. However, despite their mathematical simplicity, very limited intuitive understanding exists at this time to explain the former type of algorithms. Departing from the usual mathematical formalization, we present in this paper an interpretation of the monotonic algorithms as finite horizon, local in time, tracking schemes. Our purpose is not to present a new class of procedures but rather to introduce the necessary rigorous framework that supports this interpretation. As a by-product we show that at each instant, estimates of the future quality of the current control field are available and used in the optimization. When the target is expressed as reaching a prescribed final state, we also present an intuitive geometrical interpretation as the minimization of the distance between two correlated trajectories: one starting from the given initial state and the other backward in time from the target state. As an illustration, a stochastic monotonic algorithm is introduced. Numerical discretizations of the two procedures are also presented.

Abstract: An accurate analysis of functional MRI measurements requires a precise understanding of the physiological processes involved in this measure. This PhD work shows both investigations in hemodynamic models and algorithms to use such models in the analysis of brain imaging measurements. A particular concern with functional MRI is the temporal modeling of the responses to neural activity. Today, the most standard analysis methods use the General Linear Model framework, which supposes a linear relationship between brain activity and the BOLD response. We show how it is possible alternatively to use nonlinear models in data analysis. Our estimation of parameters by energy minimization is the equivalent to linear regression, and our adaptation of the Fisher statistical test enables activation detection, hypothesis testing, and eventually comparison between different models. We then have extended our methods to the analysis of multiple modalities data, and in particular, proposed a method to estimate the cortical activity underlying simultaneous fMRI and EEG measurements. We were able to achieve accurate estimation on synthetic data. Additionally to these methodological researches, we have investigated the model equations with an Optical Imaging experiment. We have focused on the dynamic of the blood flow, which is at a crossroad between electrical, metabolism and oxygenation processes. We have identified specific questioning facts about this dynamic, such as nonlinearity with respect to electrical synaptic activity, and delays with respect to the blood volume response. Furthermore, we have conceived a new method for estimating fast erythrocyte motions in the blood from intrinsic optical imaging signal, which might provide a new useful measurement of this blood flow. In the following synopsis, we summarize the main features of this PhD work, through highlighting the purposes, methods, conclusions and implications of each chapter. Also, we tried to present an objective criticism of this work, through mentioning both its original contributions and its weaknesses. We hope that this summary will help the reader to rapidly navigate through the thesis, while understanding the relations between its different components., L'enjeu de la présente thèse est de proposer de nouvelles méthodes d'analyse des données d'imagerie cérébrale acquises en Imagerie par Résonance Magnétique fonctionnelle (IRMf). Elle s'est concentrée en particulier sur la compréhension des signaux temporels mesurés en IRMf et leur lien avec l'activité cérébrale. En effet, les variations du signal que l'on observe en IRMf sont dues à des changements de l'afflux du sang dans le cerveau et de l'oxygénation de ce sang. Ces changements sont liés à l'activité des neurones, et l'on nomme ce phénomène la réponse hémodynamique. Cette réponse hémodynamique fait l'objet d'un important effort de modélisation, de manière à mieux pouvoir interpréter les données d'IRMf. Et cette thèse contient des travaux liés à la fois à la modélisation pour elle-même, avec l'étude de certains détails des modèles hémodynamiques, et à la fois à l'utilisation de ces modèles pour l'analyse des données, avec en particulier l'analyse des données IRMf et la fusion entre des données d'IRMf et d'Electroencéphalographie (EEG). Ainsi, la première partie de la thèse est consacrée à l'utilisation de modèles hémodynamiques en IRMf. En effet, aujourd'hui, les méthodes standard d'analyse de données d'IRM fonctionnelle utilisent le Modèle Général Linéaire (GLM), qui suppose une relation linéaire entre l'activité des neurones, la réponse hémodynamique et les mesures IRMf. Nous montrons qu'il est aussi possible d'utiliser des modèles plus plausible du point de vue biologique, et éventuellement non-linéaires pour analyser les données. A la place de la régression linéaire utilisée habituellement, nous proposons une identification de modèle basées sur une minimisation d'énergie, et nous proposons d'adapter les tests de Fisher utilisés habituellement dans le cadre du GLM pour pouvoir réaliser dans le nouveau cadre la détection d'activations, le test d'hypothèses cognitives, ainsi que des comparaisons entre différents modèles. La seconde partie quant à elle est expérimentale: nous avons étudié les équations de différents modèles hémodynamiques grâce à des expérience d'Imagerie Optique chez le singe éveillé, dans le cadre d'une collaboration avec Ivo Vanzetta dans l'équipe "Dynamique de la perception visuelle et de l'action'' au CNRS Marseille. Nous nous sommes intéressés en particulier à la dynamique du flux sanguin, qui est de première importance car elle fait le lien entre les activités électriques et métaboliques et les changements du volume et de l'oxygénation du sang. Nous avons mis en évidence des aspects de la réponse hémodynamique qui ne sont pas prévus par les modèles actuels, tels qu'une non-linéarité de cette réponse du flux par rapport à l'intensité de la réponse électrique. Par ailleurs, dans le cadre de la même collaboration, nous avons conçu une méthode pour estimer la vitesse des globules rouges dans les vaisseaux sanguins filmés en Imagerie Optique, qui constitue une nouvelle technique de mesure de ce flux sanguin. Enfin, dans la troisième partie, nous avons étendu les méthodes présentées dans la première partie à l'analyse de données de modalités multiple, et en particulier, proposons une méthode pour estimer l'activité cérébrale à partir d'enregistrement simultanés en IRMf et en EEG. Cette méthode est validée sur des données synthétiques. Le présent synopsis résume les points importants de ces travaux: les objectifs, les méthodes, les conclusions et conséquences pour chaque chapitre. Nous avons également tenté d'en présenter une critique objective, en mentionnant à la fois ce qui constitue des contributions originales et les faiblesses restantes. Nous espérons que ce résumé permettra au lecteur de se repérer rapidement dans cette thèse, et de bien comprendre les relations entre ses différentes composantes.

Abstract: International audience; We present here a formulation of the electronic ground-state energy in terms of the second order reduced density matrix, using a duality argument. It is shown that the computation of the ground-state energy reduces to the search of the projection of some two-electron reduced Hamiltonian on the dual cone of $N$-representability conditions. Some numerical results validate the approach, both for equilibrium geometries and for the dissociation curve of N$_2$.

Abstract: We study the permanent regimes of the reduced Vlasov-Maxwell system for laser-plasma interaction. A non-relativistic and two different relativistic models are investigated. We prove the existence of solutions where the distribution function is Boltzmannian and the electromagnetic variables are time-harmonic and circularly polarized.

Abstract: There is an increasing interest in using physiologically plausible models in fMRI analysis. These models do raise new mathematical problems in terms of parameters estimation and interpretation of the measured data. We present some theoretical contributions in this area, using different variations of the Balloon Model (Buxton98,Friston00,Buxton04) as example models. We propose 1) a method to analyze the models dynamics and their stability around equilibrium, 2) a new way to derive least square energy gradient for parameter estimation, 3) a quantitative measurement of parameter estimation efficiency, and 4) a statistical test for detecting voxel activations. We use these methods in a visual perception checker-board experiment. It appears that the different hemodynamic models considered better capture some features of the response than linear models. In particular, they account for small nonlinearities observed for stimulation durations between 1 and 8 seconds. Nonlinearities for stimulation shorter than one second can also be explained by a neural habituation model (Buxton04), but further investigations should assess whether they are rather not due to nonlinear effects of the flow response. Moreover, the tools we have developed prove that statistical methods that work well for the GLM can be nicely adapted to nonlinear models. The activation maps obtained in both frameworks are comparable.

Abstract: Knowledge about sensory-evoked blood-flow changes is essential for constraining hemodynamic response models used to interpret functional brain imaging signals, such as fMRI. Here, we extracted 2-dimensional blood-flow and its temporal modulations from high-resolution optical imaging data in the awake monkey. Optical imaging allows to track moving erythrocytes (or small clusters thereof), thus providing, albeit noisy, information about their velocity in individual blood vessels, across the whole imaged area. Here, we illustrate the algorithms that allowed us to extract, at the single micro-vessel level, red blood cell (RBC) motion information from the noisy optical signals. For this purpose, we developed an algorithm that is both robust and computationally efficient, using the structure tensor, known to detect an average direction of image intensity gradient. This structure tensor tool is applied to detect trajectory directions in the spatio-temporal data. Since blood-flow modulation by the cardiac pulsation was clearly detected, our method should be applicable also to study blood-flow modulations by neuronal activity, and their spatio-temporal patterns.

Abstract: We present a new method for the computation of electronic excited states of molecular systems. This method is based upon a recent theoretical definition of multiconfiguration excited states [due to one of us, see M. Lewin, Solutions of the multiconfiguration equations in quantum chemistry, Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal. 171 (2004) 83-114]. Our algorithm, dedicated to the computation of the first excited state, always converges to a stationary state of the multiconfiguration model, which can be interpreted as an approximate excited state of the molecule. The definition of this approximate excited state is variational. An interesting feature is that it satisfies a non-linear Hylleraas-Undheim-MacDonald type principle: the energy of the approximate excited state is an upper bound to the true excited state energy of the N-body Hamiltonian. To compute the first excited state, one has to deform paths on a manifold, like this is usually done in the search for transition states between reactants and products on potential energy surfaces. We propose here a general method for the deformation of paths which could also be useful in other settings. We also compare our method to other approaches used in Quantum Chemistry and give some explanation of the unsatisfactory behaviours which are sometimes observed when using the latters. Numerical results for the special case of two-electron systems are provided: we compute the first singlet excited state potential energy surface of the H"2 molecule.

Abstract: We study the control by electromagnetic fields of molecular alignment and orientation, in a linear, rigid rotor model. With the help of a monotonically convergent algorithm, we find that the optimal field is in the microwave part of the spectrum and acts by resonantly exciting the rotation of the molecule progressively from the ground state, i.e., by rotational ladder climbing. This mechanism is present not only when maximizing orientation or alignment, but also when using prescribed target states that simultaneously optimize the efficiency of orientation/alignment and its duration. The extension of the optimization method to consider a finite rotational temperature is also presented., 14 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: In a previous work [math.AP/0305408] three of us have studied a nonlinear parabolic equation arising in the mesoscopic modelling of concentrated suspensions of particles that are subjected to a given time-dependent shear rate. In the present work we extend the model to allow for a more physically relevant situation when the shear rate actually depends on the macroscopic velocity of the fluid, and as a feedback the macroscopic velocity is influenced by the average stress in the fluid. The geometry considered is that of a planar Couette flow. The mathematical system under study couples the one-dimensional heat equation and a nonlinear Fokker-Planck type equation with nonhomogeneous, nonlocal and possibly degenerate, coefficients. Abstract: In this article, we numerically solve the two-dimensional stochastic nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the case of multiplicative and additive white noises. The aim is to investigate their influence on well-known deterministic solutions: stationary states and blowing-up solutions. In the first case, we find that a multiplicative noise has a damping effect very similar to diffusion. However, for small amplitudes of the noise, the structure of solitary state is still localized. In the second case, a local refinement algorithm is used to overcome the difficulty arising for the computation of singular solutions. Our experiments show that multiplicative white noise stops the deterministic blow-up that occurs in the critical case. This extends the results of Debussche and Di Menza (Physica D, 162(3- 4) 2002, 131-154) in the one-dimensional case.

Abstract: We present a method to combine simultaneous acquisitions of EEG and fMRI measures for estimating ongoing cortical activity. We do not assume that the activity is linked to any repeated stimulation. Rather we solve a very large inverse problem, where EEG and fMRI are noisy measures of the unknown underlying neural activity, and are related to it via realistic physiological models. An extended Kalman filter is used to estimate neural activity from the combined measurements at all instants and all cortical locations. Actually it is already an interesting tool for analyzing EEG or fMRI acquisition in isolation since it is able to handle common difficulties with the temporal aspect of both modalities (temporal smoothness in the EEG inverse problem, and hemodynamic deconvolution in fMRI). Its application to simulated data shows how it takes advantage of EEG high temporal resolution and fMRI spatial precision when reconstructing sources activity.

Abstract: International audience; The ever-rising diffusion of cellular phones has brought about an increased concern for the possible consequences of electromagnetic radiation on human health. Possible thermal effects have been investigated, via experimentation or simulation, by several research projects in the last decade. Concerning numerical modeling, the power absorption in a user's head is generally computed using discretized models built from clinical MRI data. The vast majority of such numerical studies have been conducted using Finite Differences Time Domain methods, although strong limitations of their accuracy are due to heterogeneity, poor definition of the detailed structures of head tissues (staircasing effects), etc. In order to propose numerical modeling using Finite Element or Discontinuous Galerkin Time Domain methods, reliable automated tools for the unstructured discretization of human heads are also needed. Results presented in this article aim at filling the gap between human head MRI images and the accurate numerical modeling of wave propagation in biological tissues and its thermal effects.

Abstract: International audience; Given a Hamiltonian dynamics, we address the question of computing the space-average (referred as the ensemble average in the field of molecular simulation) of an observable through the limit of its time-average. For a completely integrable system, it is known that ergodicity can be characterized by a diophantine condition on its frequencies and that the two averages then coincide. In this paper, we show that we can improve the rate of convergence upon using a filter function in the time-averages. We then show that this convergence persists when a numerical symplectic scheme is applied to the system, up to the order of the integrator.

Abstract: A Discontinuous Galerkin method is used for to the numerical solution of the time-domain Maxwell equations on unstructured meshes. The method relies on the choice of local basis functions, a centered mean approximation for the surface integrals and a second-order leap-frog scheme for advancing in time. The method is proved to be stable for cases with either metallic or absorbing boundary conditions, for a large class of basis functions. A discrete analog of the electromagnetic energy is conserved for metallic cavities. Convergence is proved for Discontinuous elements on tetrahedral meshes, as well as a discrete divergence preservation property. Promising numerical examples with low-order elements show the potential of the method.

Abstract: An important part of simulations in computational quantum chemistry use nowadays very advanced scientific computing techniques. In reaction, this application field witnesses an increasing interest from the applied mathematicians community and provides research topics of high theoretical as well as practical complexity. Having entered this research field during my graduates studies, my researches in computational quantum chemistry have been confirmed in the sequel and are the central topic of this document. The presentation of my works has been divided in thematic chapters. After an introductory chapter on the SchrÄodinger equation and its approximations, the second chapter, dedicated to discretization methods, presents my theoretical contributions on the reduced basis method. The third chapter deals with a posteriori error analysis which, as is the case in real experiments where error bars are provided, allows to give quantitative information on the trust to put in the result of a numerical simulation. This method has been applied to two situations : the computation of the nuclear motion and the electronic structure. Another contribution that uses the same techniques and results in the design of Newton type algorithms for the Kohn-Sham equations is presented in Section 3.4. Switching to the time dependent equations, Chapter 4 introduces a parallel in time numerical scheme for the resolution of the evolution equations. The extension of this approach for the control setting is also given. At the heart of my research in quantum chemistry, the study of the control of quantum phenomena is described in Chapter 5. After a brief introduction I present in Sections 5.2 and 5.3 my studies on the controllability of the bilinear equations that appear in the mathematical description of the lasermatter interaction. These results continue in Section 5.4 with an application to the optimal discrimination of quantum systems. Then in Section 5.5 I give an overview of my contributions on the optimization algorithms used to find suitable laser fields in numerical control simulations. Finally, in Chapter 6 can be found a work on an epidemiological model. Chapter 7 assembles some ongoing or longer term research projects in the continuation of the contributions in the previous Chapters.; Une partie importante des simulations en chimie quantique computationnelle utilisent aujourd'hui des techniques très avancées de mathématiques appliquées et de calcul scientifique. Ayant abordé ce domaine de recherche lors de mon stage de DEA et ensuite lors de ma thèse, mes recherches en chimie quantique computationnelle ont continué par la suite et seront l'objet central de ce mémoire. Abstract: An important part of simulations in computational quantum chemistry use nowadays very advanced scientific computing techniques. In reaction, this application field witnesses an increasing interest from the applied mathematicians community and provides research topics of high theoretical as well as practical complexity. Having entered this research field during my graduates studies, my researches in computational quantum chemistry have been confirmed in the sequel and are the central topic of this document. The presentation of my works has been divided in thematic chapters. After an introductory chapter on the SchrÄodinger equation and its approximations, the second chapter, dedicated to discretization methods, presents my theoretical contributions on the reduced basis method. The third chapter deals with a posteriori error analysis which, as is the case in real experiments where error bars are provided, allows to give quantitative information on the trust to put in the result of a numerical simulation. This method has been applied to two situations : the computation of the nuclear motion and the electronic structure. Another contribution that uses the same techniques and results in the design of Newton type algorithms for the Kohn-Sham equations is presented in Section 3.4. Switching to the time dependent equations, Chapter 4 introduces a parallel in time numerical scheme for the resolution of the evolution equations. The extension of this approach for the control setting is also given. At the heart of my research in quantum chemistry, the study of the control of quantum phenomena is described in Chapter 5. Abstract: International audience; We introduce high-order formulas for the computation of statistical averages based on the long-time simulation of molecular dynamics trajectories. In some cases, this allows us to significantly improve the convergence rate of time averages toward ensemble averages. We provide some numerical examples that show the efficiency of our scheme. When trajectories are approximated using symplectic integration schemes (such as velocity Verlet), we give some error bounds that allow one to fix the parameters of the computation in order to reach a given desired accuracy in the most efficient manner.

Abstract: We survey the recent activities of the Odyssee Laboratory in the area of the application of mathematics to the design of models for studying brain anatomy and function. We start with the problem of reconstructing sources in MEG and EEG, and discuss the variational approach we have developed for solving these inverse problems. This motivates the need for geometric models of the head. We present a method for automatically and accurately extracting surface meshes of several tissues of the head from anatomical magnetic resonance (MR) images. Anatomical connectivity can be extracted from diffusion tensor magnetic resonance images but, in the current state of the technology, it must be preceded by a robust estimation and regularization stage. We discuss our work based on variational principles and show how the results can be used to track fibers in the white matter (WM) as geodesics in some Riemannian space. We then go to the statistical modeling of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals from the viewpoint of their decomposition in a pseudo-deterministic and stochastic part that we then use to perform clustering of voxels in a way that is inspired by the theory of support vector machines and in a way that is grounded in information theory. Multimodal image matching is discussed next in the framework of image statistics and partial differential equations (PDEs) with an eye on registering fMRI to the anatomy. The paper ends with a discussion of a new theory of random shapes that may prove useful in building anatomical and functional atlases.

Abstract: We introduce high-order averaging formulae for the computation of statistical averages on the basis of the numerical simulation of long-time molecular dynamics trajectories. Using these formulae, we improve the convergence rate of the time average with respect to the computational effort. We provide some numerical examples that show the efficiency of our scheme. When trajectories are approximated using symplectic integration schemes (such as velocity Verlet), we give error bounds that provide guidelines to choose the parameters of the computation in order to reach a given desired accuracy in the most efficient manner.

Abstract: Based on the theory of non-negative supermartingales, convergence results are proven for adaptive (1,)-ES with Gaussian mutations, and geometrical convergence rates are derived. In the d-dimensional case (d > 1), the algorithm studied here uses a different step-size update in each direction. However, the critical value for the step-size, and the resulting convergence rate do not depend on the dimension. Those results are discussed with respect to previous works. Thorough numerical investigations on some 1-dimensional functions validate the theoretical results.
