Background: The status of effective therapeutic interventions has been highlighted by rising concerns about adolescent addiction to information and communication technologies (ICT), especially Instagram. Accordingly, the present study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the individual psychotherapy program for ICT addiction, focusing on reducing the severity of Instagram addiction and Instagram usage in adolescents. This study distinguishes between ‘addiction severity,’ which indicates compulsive behavior and psychological dependence and ‘usage duration,’ which measures the actual time spent on Instagram. Methods: This research was a pre-experimental study with AB (A [baseline] and B [intervention]) design. The statistical population includes adolescent girls from Karaj City, Iran, addicted to Instagram. Four girls were selected from 14 who were interested in participating in the research in the summer of 2021. The participants answered questionnaires on addiction to mobile-based social networks at the beginning of the treatment and during the treatment process. Each participant individually participated in 21 sessions of the psychotherapy program. Data analysis was done using statistical indicators (change in trend direction, median change, mean, reliability index, determination of overlap percentage, and improvement percentage). All calculations were done using SPSS software, version 25. Results: Visual analysis indicated the positive effect of the individual psychotherapy program for addiction to ICT on Instagram addiction. The results also showed a decrease in the number of hours of use of this application in all four adolescents. Conclusion: According to visual analysis, the study findings support the effectiveness of the individual psychotherapy program for ICT addiction in reducing the use of Instagram and the associated addiction levels among adolescents. However, it is crucial to consider the limitations of a single-subject design in generalizing the results and the assumptions required for inferential statistics. Therefore, these findings are preliminary and must be validated through larger-scale studies.

Introduction: Dysmorphic concerns refer to excessive preoccupations with one's physical characteristics. There is a need to better understand the factors associated with these experiences, especially in young adult women. Given emergent research suggesting a link between the use of Instagram, dysmorphic concerns, and appearance pressures, we tested a mediation model in which appearance‐based rejection sensitivity mediated the relationship between Instagram addiction and dysmorphic concerns. Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, 300 young adult women from Romania with mean age of 22.19 years (SD = 2.07) and who possessed an Instagram account were asked to complete an online survey consisting of measures of dysmorphic concerns, Instagram addiction, and appearance‐based rejection sensitivity. Results: Correlational analyses revealed that all three variables were positively and moderately inter‐correlated. Mediation analysis supported the hypothesis that appearance‐based rejection sensitivity mediates the relationship between Instagram addiction and dysmorphic concerns. Conclusions: Implications of this study are discussed in terms of the urgency of prevention and intervention strategies, especially given the link between dysmorphic concerns and more extreme manifestations of severity, such as body dysmorphic disorder. The prevalence of social appearance anxiety among adolescents has increased in recent years. It can be said that one of the reasons for this situation is appearance-oriented social media applications. Attachment styles in adolescents may play a role in social appearance anxiety, as in many types of anxiety. However, adolescents' positive youth development levels may have a protective role against social appearance anxiety. Therefore, this study investigated the serial mediator roles of Instagram addiction and positive youth development in the relationship between anxious-avoidant attachment style and social appearance anxiety in adolescents. The research was carried out with 508 high school students. As a result of the research, it was determined that anxious-avoidant attachment and Instagram addiction predicted social appearance anxiety positively. It was determined that positive youth development predicted social appearance anxiety negatively. In addition, mediating roles in the relationship between positive youth development and Instagram addiction, anxious-avoidant attachment and social appearance anxiety were found significant in the study. The study examined the relationship between democratic, authoritarian, and protective‐demanding parental attitudes, obsessive‐compulsive disorder (OCD), and Instagram addiction. It is based on the correlational research design in which the structural relationships between the variables were used. The study was carried out on 421 university students using Instagram. Of the students participating in the study, 233 were females (55.3%), and 188 were males (44.7%). Parental attitude scale, Instagram addiction scale, and OCD scale were used for the data collection, and Structural Equation Modeling was used for the data analysis. According to the study results, protective/demanding parental attitude significantly predicts OCD, OCD significantly indicates Instagram addiction, and OCD mediates the relationship between protective/demanding parental attitude and Instagram addiction. Conversely, democratic parental attitude does not predict OCD, and authoritarian parental attitude does not predict OCD. Based on the results of this study, protective/demanding parental involvement should be considered when preparing a strategic move to reduce OCD and prevent Instagram addiction among young people. In this a mediation model, the focus of intervention is OCD. Therefore, based on the results of this study, OCD should be considered when preparing a strategic move to prevent or treat Instagram addiction among young people. The problematic use of Instagram in the form of addiction has gained increasing credibility and attention in recent years, leading to the development of several psychometric instruments to assess the behavior. One recently developed tool is the 15-item Instagram Addiction Scale (IAS-15). The IAS-15 comprises two subscales assessing social effect and compulsion. In the present study, the IAS-15 was translated into Italian, and its reliability and validity were tested among 398 Italians (101 males, 297 females) aged 18 to 78 years (mean age M=37 years; SD=11). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the original two-factor solution. Furthermore, the scale showed good internal consistency. Additionally, Instagram addiction was positively associated with social phobia, depression, anxiety, stress, social media addiction, smartphone addiction, and internet use disorder while being negatively associated with age, perceived quality of life, and quality of sleep. Based on the findings, the IAS-15 is a valid and reliable psychometric instrument to assess Instagram addiction among Italian adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The increasing use of social networking sites (SNSs) globally has brought about significant changes in individuals' daily lives and interpersonal relationships. Instagram is one of the most popular SNSs and has played an important role in these changes. While most individuals' use of Instagram has beneficial effects, there have been some studies suggesting that Instagram use can be addictive for a small minority of users. Therefore, valid and reliable tools are needed to investigate this phenomenon. Method: The present study tested the psychometric properties of the 15-item Persian version of the Instagram Addiction Scale (IAS) among Iranian students. Confirmatory factor analysis and convergent validity were used to evaluate scale validity, and Cronbach's alpha and testretest methods were used to evaluate the reliability. The sample comprised 660 students, including 476 women (72.1%) and 184 men (27.9%). The mean age of the total sample was 23.7 years. Results: Cronbach's alpha coefficients were 0.87 for the whole scale, 0.74 for the social effect subscale and 0.84 for the compulsion subscale. Correlation coefficients obtained from divergent validity with psychological well-being and life satisfaction scales were significant. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the Persian IAS is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the risk of Instagram addiction among Iranian students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of social networking sites (SNSs) has become increasingly popular. Although several studies have been carried out on the addictive use of SNSs such as Twitter and Facebook, there is little research on Instagram addiction and its drivers. The present study investigated the association between students' needs and Instagram addiction by incorporating physical activity as a moderator among 364 university students. Additionally, the associations between Instagram addiction, academic performance, depression, social anxiety, and life satisfaction were investigated. The results showed that recognition needs, social needs, and entertainment needs all contributed to Instagram addiction. However, information needs were not a significant predictor of Instagram addiction. The findings also illustrated that physical activity had a moderating role in the effect of social needs and entertainment needs on Instagram addiction. The findings also provide evidence of the negative impact of Instagram addiction on academic performance and the positive effect of Instagram addiction on social anxiety and depression. Academic performance was a positive predictor of life satisfaction, while social anxiety and depression negatively influenced students' life satisfaction. Instagram is a social media tool that increases in the number and popularity of users. Providing information about events and people, entertainment and relaxation, maintaining relationships, personal presentation, interacting with different identities, making new friendships and making life easier in many respects from photography to video, from live broadcast to instant story sharing, the excessive, unnecessary use of Instagram causes addiction problems. This research is designed to compare Turkish and Malaysian college students’ Instagram addiction level; and, relationships between Instagram addiction level and their level of narcissism, self-esteem, self-presentation, usage patterns in terms of exhibiting the situation in two different cultures. Data were obtained from 403 participants by face-to-face questionnaire. As a result of the study, it was found that the level of Instagram addiction did not differ significantly according to the gender of the participants. Depending on the country in which they live, Instagram addiction levels vary significantly. Instagram addiction levels of Malaysian participants is higher than students in Turkey. The result that self-presentation and social media usage time is a positively significant predictor on Instagram addiction whereas self-esteem level is a negatively significant predictor stands out. The level of narcissism was not significant.

Instagram addiction is a social phenomenon among adolescents that has been scantily researched. This study aims to empirically examine the effect of type D personality (social disinhibition and negative affectivity), self-esteem, and fear of missing out (FoMO) on Instagram addiction among teenagers. A total of 259 participants, type D personalities with severe Instagram addiction who live in Jakarta Greater Area obtained through screening results (based on their total scores). This research used snowball sampling dan regression techniques for data collection and analysis. Data analysis showed that all predictors affected 56.9% of Instagram addiction cases. Partially, it is known that only negative affectivity (one of type D personality factors) has no influence on Instagram addiction, which means that, the role of pure internal factors such as personality type D is not as significant as the combination of both external and internal factors such as fear of missing out and self-esteem in influencing Instagram addiction.

• Sexualized female pictures posted on Instagram lead to greater body dissatisfaction. • Appearance comments have no effect on body dissatisfaction. • Instagram addiction predicts greater cosmetic surgery intentions. • Instagram addiction moderates the condition's effects on cosmetic surgery intentions. Instagram is a visually centered social media that involves the presence of sexualized imagery posted by users. Such Instagram sexualization may have a negative impact on women's body image. The present study examined whether exposure to Instagram sexualization, namely posts of sexualized women along with appearance-related comments, affected women's body satisfaction and cosmetic surgery intentions. In doing so, it also considered the moderating role of Instagram Addiction Proclivity (IAP). Young Italian female participants (N = 247) were randomly exposed to one of four video conditions resulting from the combination of either sexualized or non-sexualized women's pictures on Instagram, paired with appearance or neutral comments. In the sexualized picture condition participants' body dissatisfaction increased compared to pre-exposure levels and to the non-sexualized picture condition. The type of comments did not affect participants' body satisfaction. Moreover, IAP predicted cosmetic surgery intentions and moderated their reactions to Instagram content. Indeed, the higher the IAP, the higher the cosmetic surgery intentions of participants viewing sexualized pictures with neutral comments and non-sexualized pictures with body appearance comments. These findings suggest that female Instagram users should be aware of the negative impacts of viewing sexualized imagery as well as the role that IAP may play. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Currently the social networking application Instagram has taken higher priority of usage over many other such social networking applications. Objectives: In the present study, an attempt was made to determine the relationship between Instagram addiction and sleep quality of students pursuing a speech and hearing course. Methods: The present study adopted a correlational research design. The sample consisted of 110 students, comprised of 18 male and 92 female students aged between 17 and 25 years old from Mysuru city. Students pursuing a speech and hearing course completed the test for Instagram addiction (TIA) developed by D’Souza, Samyukta and Bivera, and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) during September to November, 2018. Test for Instagram addiction measured addiction by considering six factors, including lack of control, disengagement, escapism, health and interpersonal troubles, excessive use, and obsession. The PSQI measured global sleep quality. Pearson’s correlations were employed to find the relationship between dimensions of Instagram addiction and sleep quality. Stepwise multiple regression was employed to find the major predictors of sleep quality by factors of Instagram addiction. Results: The results revealed that among students pursuing speech and hearing selected for the study, only 0.9% were definitely addicts and 14.5% were ‘addicts prone’. The majority of the selected sample (60.9%) had healthy sleep quality. As addiction to Instagram increased, sleep quality of dental students decreased linearly and significantly (r = 0.536). ‘Escapism’ (29.8%) and ‘disengagement’ (2.5%) factors of test for Instagram addiction were found to be the major predictor (32.3%) of sleep quality. Background and aims: Recent research has suggested that social networking site use can be addictive. Although extensive research has been carried out on potential addiction to social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Tinder, only one very small study has previously examined potential addiction to Instagram. Consequently, the objectives of this study were to examine the relationships between personality, self-liking, daily Internet use, and Instagram addiction, as well as exploring the mediating role of self-liking between personality and Instagram addiction using path analysis. Methods: A total of 752 university students completed a self-report survey, including the Instagram Addiction Scale (IAS), the Big Five Inventory (BFI), and the Self-Liking Scale. Results: Results indicated that agreeableness, conscientiousness, and self-liking were negatively associated with Instagram addiction, whereas daily Internet use was positively associated with Instagram addiction. The results also showed that self-liking partially mediated the relationship of Instagram addiction with agreeableness and fully mediated the relationship between Instagram addiction with conscientiousness. Discussion and conclusions: This study contributes to the small body of literature that has examined the relationship between personality and social networking site addiction and is one of only two studies to examine the addictive use of Instagram and the underlying factors related to it. Physical appearance is an important domain wherein people tend to have perfectionistic tendencies. Physical appearance perfectionism is a domain-specific type of perfectionism that has a potential role to play in how addiction to popular social media platforms such as Instagram can negatively impact a person's body esteem. To test the hypothesis that physical appearance perfectionism mediates the relationship between Instagram addiction and body esteem, data were collected from 902 undergraduate students from the Philippines. While there were gender differences in the levels of the variables, analysis showed that physical appearance perfectionism (worry about imperfection) significantly mediates the relationship between Instagram addiction and body esteem even after controlling for the effects of sex. This confirms the importance of studying how individual difference variables such as physical appearance perfectionism can explain why social media has a significant influence on how people perceive their physical bodies. Future research that tests the effects of Instagram addiction and physical appearance perfectionism on psychological outcomes other than body esteem is recommended to better inform the design of interventions for the prevention of addictive behaviors and potentially pathological traits. • Gender differences in Instagram addiction, physical appearance perfectionism, and body esteem were found. • Worry about imperfection mediates the relationship between Instagram addiction and body esteem. • This mediating effect is maintained even after the effect of gender is controlled. The purpose of this study is to investigate the direct and indirect effects of Dark Triad (DT) traits (Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy) on Instagram addiction by considering the mediating roles of motives (social, conformity, enhancement, and coping). Data were obtained from 315 Instagram users in Oman and analyzed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) technique. The results indicated that Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy have a positive and significant effect on Instagram addiction. Conformity, enhancement and coping motives were found to mediate the influence of Narcissism on Instagram addiction. Conformity motive mediated the Machiavellianism–Instagram addiction link and coping motive mediated the Psychopathy–Instagram addiction link. Background: Social isolation during the lockdown, and the greater use of online platforms to connect with other people, can alter the dynamic relationship between loneliness, social media use, and subjective well-being. The study examines the mediating role of loneliness in the bidirectional association between Instagram addiction and life satisfaction., Methods: A sample of 954 university students from Poland were enrolled in a cross-sectional online study during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants aged between 19 and 42 ( M = 22.56, SD = 2.36), and most of them were women (86.48%). Standardized questionnaires were used to measure Instagram addiction (BIAS), loneliness (DJGLS), and life satisfaction (SWLS)., Results: The prevalence of Instagram addiction, loneliness, and dissatisfaction with life was 17.19%, 75%, and 40.15%, respectively. The mediating effect of loneliness on the relationship between Instagram addiction and life satisfaction was found bidirectionally in women but not among men., Conclusions: Loneliness seems to play a crucial role in the mechanism of social media addiction, so increasing loneliness should be a priority among emerging adults. The target group for intervention and prevention programs at campuses should include lonely and dissatisfied with life university students of the female gender.

So, developing prevention strategies is essential for promoting the safe and healthy use of social networking sites such as Instagram. This study aims to investigate the influence of students' needs on Instagram addiction by considering the moderating role of psychological well-being. Furthermore, the association among Instagram addiction, academic performance, shyness, and loneliness is explored. A total of 364 university students from Malaysia were recruited to take part in this research. The hypothesized model was assessed using the Partial Least Squares approach. Several studies have shown an association between adolescents' attachment relationships and social media use. Instagram is the social media platform most used by teenagers and recent studies have shown an association between Instagram use and increased psychopathological risk. The present study aims to verify whether psychopathological risk mediates the relationship between an adolescent's attachment to their parents and peers and their Instagram addiction. N = 372 adolescents are assessed through self-report questionnaires evaluating Instagram addiction, the adolescents' attachments to parents and peers, and their psychopathological risk. The Bergen Instagram Addiction Scale (BIAS) is developed by adapting the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale. Results show the validity and reliability of the BIAS, confirming a one-factor structure. Findings show that a worse attachment to parents and peers is associated with adolescents' psychopathological risk, which is associated with Instagram addiction. This finding has important clinical implications. Being able to intervene in adolescents' relationships with parents and peers and the ways in which adolescents feel in relation to others could allow for a reduction in adolescents' psychological difficulties, involving reduced Instagram use as a vehicle for the expression of their psychopathological symptoms.
