Importance of frontline communication skills in veterinary medicine are often overlooked and underestimated. At Oniris School of Veterinary Medicine in Nantes France, a week long frontline experience at the Oniris teaching hospital front desk/pet nutrition & supplies point of retail outlet is required of all 4th year veterinary students as part of clinical rotation for small companion animals. Oniris teaching hospital, treats over 15,000 small animal and 1,000 equine cases / year. 4th year students, in groups of 3-4, spend an entire week managing the front desk where all hospital appointments are made, client/pet owners are greeted. Client payment and pet nutrition & supplies retail management are also frontline duties. The Calgary-Cambridge client simulation model is part of the 3rd year curriculum. A 2017 Oniris study on effectiveness of course show that student satisfaction is significantly high; however, it appears that these skills require further practice and assessment thereby identifying need for more communication skills training as part of curriculum. An online training module was designed in order to remind students of communication skills that will be practiced and adapted to the frontline experience. This includes a self-evaluation Calgary-Cambridge coaching instrument adapted for veterinary phoning skills, frontline leadership skills guide, and video. The students are supervised by the Oniris frontline staff as well as Communication and Management faculty members. Weekly individual coaching sessions with faculty members are used for evaluation as well as written reflection and peer observation. Poster will include rotation details and qualitative/quantitative analysis of student reflection tasks.
