3. High-Efficiency Wireless Power Transfer With Tightly Coupled Antenna Arrays

Abstract

In this communication, the use of tightly coupled antenna array (TCAA) for radiative wireless power transfer (WPT) implementation is discussed; such arrays exhibit very high radiation efficiency, also thanks to their reduced antenna spacing, which make them a good candidate for the realization of high-efficiency WPT links. A dual-orthogonal polarization TCAA unit cell design based on an infinite array equivalent model (IAEM) is described, focusing on the maximization of the broadside efficiency instead of the conventional TCAA optimization of ultrawideband and wide scan angle stability performance. A numerical methodology for the evaluation of the achievable power transfer efficiency (PTE) is discussed, showing the key role of a close antenna spacing in achieving high efficiency. Finally, results of the experimental analysis done at 2.45 and 3 GHz with two TCAA prototypes excited with equal amplitude/phase feed networks are reported, confirming that TCAAs perform very close to the continuous aperture (CA) limit.

11. Array Pattern Synthesis for ETC Applications

Abstract

The problem of antenna array synthesis for radiation pattern defined on a planar surface will be considered in this chapter. This situation could happen when the electric field r-decay factor effect cannot be neglected, for example, an antenna array mechanically tilted and a pattern defined in terms of Cartesian coordinates, as in the electronic toll collection (ETC) scenario. Two possible approaches will be presented: the first one aims at the precise synthesis of the pattern in the case both a constant power-bounded area and a sidelobe suppression region are defined and required to be synthesized. The second approach instead devotes at stretching the coverage area toward the travel length (without considering a precise definition of the communication area) to increase the available identification time with an iterative methodology. For the latter, an antenna prototype has been fabricated, and measurement results have confirmed the approach validity.

Abstract

In this paper, a dynamicmulti-ary query tree(DMQT) anti-collision protocol for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems is proposed for large scale passive RFID tag identification. The proposed DMQT protocol is based on an iterative process between the reader and tags which identifies the position of collision bits through map commands and dynamically encodes them to optimize slots allocation through query commands. In this way, the DMQT completely eliminates empty slots and greatly reduces collision slots, which in turn reduces the identification time and energy costs. In addition and differently to other known protocols, the DMQT does not need to estimate the number of tags, reducing the protocol implementation complexity and eliminating the uncertainty caused by the estimation algorithm. A numerical analysis shows that DMQT has better performance than other algorithms for a number of tags larger than 300. Meanwhile, when the number of tags is 2000 and the tag identity (ID) length is 128 bits, the total identification time is 2.58 s and the average energy cost for a tag identification is 1.2 mJ, which are 16.9% and 10.4% less than those of state-of-the-art algorithms, respectively. In addition, a DMQT extension based on ACK command has also been presented to deal with capture effect and avoid missing identification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
