A high voltage gain DC–DC converter with a Y-source network is proposed in this paper for applications such as fuel cells and PV systems. The proposed converter topology is a combination of a Y-source module with a switched capacitor boost module. It is a single switch topology to produce high voltage gain at the load. The superiority of the proposed topology is the high voltage transfer ratio and continuous input current. The voltage gain of the converter can be achieved up to twenty times the input voltage at a duty cycle of 25% itself. The steady state analysis of the converter is carried out using mathematical equations and the working of the converter is explained. The design and analysis of the passive components in the circuit are explained. To illustrate the highlights of the converter, the proposed topology is compared with similar converters in the literature. The simulation of the converter is carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The circuit is verified in the laboratory using a 100W prototype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of multi-terminal high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission systems is being adopted in many new links between different generation and consumption areas due to their high efficiency. In these systems, cable energization must be performed at the rated voltage. Healthy energizations at the rated voltage result in large inrush currents, especially in long cables, primarily due to ground capacitance. State-of-the-art protection functions struggle to distinguish between transients caused by switching and those associated with ground faults, leading to potential unwanted tripping of the protection systems. To prevent this, tripping is usually blocked during the energization transient, which delays fault detection and clearing. This paper presents a novel method for prompt discrimination between healthy and faulty energizations. The proposed method outperforms conventional protection functions as this discrimination allows for earlier and more reliable tripping, thus avoiding extensive damage to the cable and the converter due to trip blocking. The method is based on the transient analysis of the current in the cable shields, therefore, another technical advantage is that high voltage-insulated measuring devices are not required. Two distinct tripping criteria are proposed: one attending to the change in current polarity, and the other to the change in current derivative sign. The proposed inverter utilizes three capacitors, 13 semiconductor switches, three diodes, and an input voltage source to achieve a 17-level output voltage. The switched capacitors naturally achieve voltage balancing without the need for sensors or additional circuits, indicating the ease of control of the proposed structure. To control the inrush current of the switched capacitors, a charge limiting inductor has been utilized in the charging path of the capacitors. This not only reduces the inrush current of the capacitors and the input source current but also enables faster capacitor charging and extends their lifetime. The switches used in the proposed structure can withstand a maximum of 4 times the input voltage value or the half of the maximum output voltage, which is a significant advantage for the proposed structure. A detailed comparison with similar structures is provided to examine the advantages and disadvantages of the suggested inverter. The procedure of self-voltage balancing of the capacitors and the functional modes of the proposed topology has been explained in detail. The proposed structure is suitable for applications such as renewable energy sources transfer to load or grid. The performance of the proposed topology under different conditions is confirmed through simulation in the Matlab\Simulink software and the implementation of the laboratory sample.

In this study, by using the co-simulation technique, the dry-type transformer is designed for a wind turbine with 3.8 MVA, 690 V/36 kV power, and voltages. Dry-type transformers used in wind turbines require extra effort at the design stage concerning oil-immersed type because of the limited cooling capacity of air, possible higher inrush currents, resonant overvoltage, higher voltage, and load fluctuations that degrade thermal behavior. Furthermore, transformer design and analysis of their thermal behavior cannot be realized through one simulation software. Therefore, another approach using different simulation software simultaneously is needed, called co-simulation or multi-physics solution. This paper investigates transformer design and its effect on the system using a co-simulation technique including ANSYS Maxwell 3D, Simplorer, and Mechanical. After realizing the three-dimensional transformer design, its lumped parameter consisting of inductance matrix, leakage inductances, and resistances are determined analytically and using an eddy current solver. Core losses of the transformer, high- and low-voltage windings voltages, and their harmonic spectrums under different load conditions, including ohmic and inductive loads, are defined, the steady-state thermal solution is performed, and conclusions are made. This research paper aims to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of grid-connected solid-state transformers (SSTs) by detecting and evaluating various undesirable operating conditions. The study considers different types of faults, including internal faults like open switches and open capacitors, external faults such as symmetrical and asymmetrical faults occurring at various locations of the SST, and abnormalities on the grid side known as sympathetic inrush conditions. To analyze these operating conditions, the secondary current of the high-frequency transformer is normalized and decomposed using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and wavelet packet transform (WPT). From the DWT and WPT decomposition at multiple levels, several statistical parameters are calculated. These statistical parameters are carefully selected from different decomposition levels to enhance the effectiveness of the detection algorithm utilizing DWT and WPT. In order to quickly identify and classify all operating conditions that impact the performance of the grid-connected SST, a three-layer feedforward artificial neural network (ANN) is employed, using the selected statistical features. The accuracy and efficiency of the ANN-based classification approach are evaluated by assessing the effectiveness of the statistical features obtained from DWT and WPT. Simulation results have been altered by introducing various noise levels to systematically assess the performance of the proposed algorithms. The average accuracy of the DWT-ANN algorithm stands at 97.89%, while the WPT-ANN algorithm achieves a slightly elevated accuracy level of 98.01%. Purpose – Auxiliary power system is an indispensable part of the train; the auxiliary systems of both electric locomotives and EMUs mainly are powered by one of the two ways, which are either from auxiliary windings of traction transformers or from DC-link voltage of traction converters. Powered by DC-link voltage of traction converters, the auxiliary systems were maintained of uninterruptable power supply with energy from electric braking. Meanwhile, powered by traction transformers, the auxiliary systems were always out of power while passing the neutral section of power supply grid and control system is powered by battery at this time. Design/methodology/approach – Uninterrupted power supply of auxiliary power system powered by auxiliary winding of traction transformer was studied. Failure reasons why previous solutions cannot be realized are analyzed. An uninterruptable power supply scheme for the auxiliary systems powered by auxiliary windings of traction transformers is proposed in this paper. The validity of the proposed scheme is verified by simulation and experimental results and on-site operation of an upgraded HXD3C type locomotive. This scheme is attractive for upgrading practical locomotives with the auxiliary systems powered by auxiliary windings of traction transformers. Findings – This scheme regenerates braking power supplied to auxiliary windings of traction transformers while a locomotive runs in the neutral section of the power supply grid. Control objectives of uninterrupted power supply technology are proposed, which are no overvoltage, no overcurrent and uninterrupted power supply. Originality/value – The control strategies of the scheme ensure both overvoltage free and inrush current free when a locomotive enters or leaves the neutral section. Furthermore, this scheme is cost low by employing updated control strategy of software and add both the two current sensors and two connection wires of hardware.

Inrush current in high-temperature superconducting (HTS) transformers is a little-studied phenomenon. After connecting to the power grid, a current flow through the windings which exceeding the critical current value of the superconducting tape. It may cause significant overheating and thermal damage of winding. The purpose of the study is to develop a mathematical model for calculating inrush current pulses in a HTS transformer and its verification by physical experiments. To achieve the goal of the study, a mathematical model has been developed that accurately represents the electromagnetic and thermal transient processes after HTS transformer is turned on at idling or under load. The model considers the critical parameters of the HTS tapes, the process of heating and cooling of the windings, quench characteristics, and the electrical and magnetic parameters of the transformer. Good compliance of the experimental results and mathematical modeling with a deviation of 1.99 % allowed us to verify the model. The most important result is the creation of a mathematical model of the HTS transformer at the moment of connecting to power grid. This model represents the temperature changing of the windings during the loss of superconductivity. The developed model can be used in the analysis and modeling of inrush current in designed and operating HTS transformers for any power. The obtained results are significant for determine the optimal starting characteristics, geometric and electrical parameters of HTS transformers. The proposed methods for reducing the inrush current ensure safe and reliable operation of the HTS transformer when switched on at idling or under load.

This study presents a method to limit the functioning of the differential relay during the different operating conditions of an Indirect Symmetrical Phase Shift Transformer (ISPST). The proposed method depends on two thresholds; phase angle shift (PAS) between two ends of an ISPST to discriminate internal faults and inrush conditions from normal, over-excitation, and external fault conditions and slope of differential current helps to discriminate the situation of internal fault from inrush. In the first step of the algorithm, the PAS-based threshold discriminates normal, over-excitation, and external fault conditions from magnetizing inrush and internal fault conditions. In the second step, the slope-based threshold discriminates magnetizing inrush from internal fault conditions. The reliability of the proposed method has also been examined under the condition of current transformer saturation due to heavy external faults. Additionally, the comparison of the suggested and conventional methods is discussed to check the superiority of the proposed method. The proposed method eliminates the need for phase angle shift correction in the suggested method. In recent years, a progressive renovation of public lighting has been taking place in cities, from metal halide lamps to LED luminaires. This renovation has been carried out on a large scale by replacing some luminaires with others without taking into account other elements of the circuit. Due to the high number of electronic components, LED luminaires generate inrush currents that can exceed several times the nominal current value at ignition process. This electrical phenomenon is a basic problem to be solved when planning a street lighting renovation with LED luminaires, because it is essential to have a prior estimation of the inrush current generated by the luminaires for a correct sizing of the circuit protection elements. Currently, it is difficult to predict the value of the inrush current, for this reason, the main objective is to establish an innovative methodology based on advanced multi-criteria decision-making methods (entropy and CRITIC) to predict anomalous behaviors (inrush current peaks) in LED luminaire installations and their appropriate selection in the design phase or before are mounted in the circuit to avoid negative consequences on the components and to dimension them correctly, producing cost savings in the replacement of circuit elements such as circuit breakers and switches. The modeling process of a component or system consists of several steps, which are rarely entirely covered in undergraduate courses. Moreover, theoretical and laboratory lectures focus on different stages on modeling, and are commonly taught at different periods, which may negatively affect the learning process. Thus, this paper proposes a set of lectures that mixes theory and experiments, taught in an experimental laboratory, and which address all steps of modeling process. The case study is a single-phase transformer, where from a conceptual (electromagnetic) model, physical (electrical) models are developed up to a model capable of representing more complex phenomena such as inrush currents and magnetizing inductance saturation. Increasingly detailed theoretical modeling, using simulation tools and experimental measurements, guides the student in this process. It is shown that models can be improved at the expense of deeper understanding of the involved phenomena, and of more complex theoretical and experimental strategies to validate them. Moreover, this paper demonstrates that modeling complexity is only necessary up to a point which explains adequately the experimental results. Finally, the paper presents the perception of the students on the lectures, indicating that this teaching methodology can be adequate for other courses on system modeling.

The detection of inrush currents is vital for transformer differential protection. The mainstream method for detecting inrush current is based on the second harmonic content of the differential current. However, the vector compensation used in the differential protection of three-phase transformers may reduce the second harmonic content in the differential current, resulting in misoperation when the transformer is energized. This study proposes an innovative unified algorithm based on rotating phasors to improve the accuracy of detecting inrush current when three-phase transformers are energized. Compared with existing methods that generally require external system parameters of the transformer and are only applicable to energizing from the wye windings of the three-phase transformers, the proposed algorithm is based solely on the measurable line currents of the transformer. Both theoretical analysis and PSCAD simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm markedly improves the accuracy of inrush current identification in three-phase transformers when the transformer is energized from the wye windings and also from the delta windings or with load. The proposed algorithm presents a new identification method for the per-phase blocking of differential protection.

Inrush current is high-magnitude current drawn by power transformers upon energization. The severity of inrush current depends on factors such as the transformer’s residual flux and the voltage phase angle at the energization instant. This paper proposes a flux matching method for the energization of V/V traction transformers to mitigate inrush current. This is achieved by adjusting the residual flux of the core to an appropriate reference value and then obtaining the proper energization instant. To this end, the method only requires knowledge of nominal voltage and excitation current, eliminating the need to acquire transformer’s parameters/design information. The railway power conditioner, typically present at the low voltage side of the V/V transformer, is used as a current source to inject sinusoidal current into the transformer windings before its energization. The reference residual flux is calculated based on the circuit breaker operating characteristics. The energization instant is determined such that the adjusted flux density matches the steady-state flux expected with respect to the applied voltage. The proposed method is validated by conducting over 14,000 simulations under different conditions using PSCAD/EMTDC. The method is also implemented and successfully tested on a laboratory-scale test rig, which verifies its effectiveness in more realistic conditions.

The reliability and stability of differential protection in power transformers could be threatened by several types of inferences, including magnetizing inrush currents, current transformer saturation, and overexcitation from external faults. The robustness of deep learning applications employed for power system protection in recent years has offered solutions to deal with several disturbances. This paper presents a method for detecting internal faults in power transformers occurring simultaneously with inrush currents. It involves utilizing a data window (DW) and stacked denoising autoencoders. Unlike the conventional method, the proposed scheme requires no thresholds to discriminate internal faults and inrush currents. The performance of the algorithm was verified using fault data from a typical Korean 154 kV distribution substation. Inrush current variation and internal faults were simulated and generated in PSCAD/EMTDC, considering various parameters that affect an inrush current. The results indicate that the proposed scheme can detect the appearance of internal faults occurring simultaneously with an inrush current. Moreover, it shows promising results compared to the prevailing methods, ensuring the superiority of the proposed method. From sample N–3, the proposed DNN demonstrates accurate discrimination between internal faults and inrush currents, achieving accuracy, sensitivity, and precision values of 100%. Numerous methods exist to distinguish between inrush current and internal faults, but these approaches have not yet become practical due to their inherent limitations. As a result, conventional methods, despite their well-known drawbacks, continue to be widely used in practice. In this paper, a new method based on time-frequency analysis is presented for detecting inrush current situations. To do this, a diverse array of scenarios involving a power transformer switching ON and internal fault cases are simulated using the PSCAD/EMTDC software package. Then, a hyperbolic S-transformer is employed to extract a determining index from the simulation results. Finally, a suitable threshold value for this index is computed so that inrush current can be distinguished from fault current by comparing the index with its threshold. Evaluation of the efficiency of the proposed method using simulation and real data confirms its excellent accuracy. Abstract The automatic reclosing strategy is an effective measure to improve the reliability of a distribution network. It can quickly clear instantaneous faults in the grid. The traditional transformer has proven to be reliable and robust during the reclosing process. However, the influence of the reclosing process on the operational characteristics and reliability of solid-state transformers (SST) is still unclear. The reclosing action may generate a huge inrush current, resulting in shutdown and even damage of the SST. To address this problem, this paper proposes an inrush current suppression strategy. First, the operational performance of the SST under a reclosing process is discussed, and the inrush current generation mechanism is analyzed in detail. Then, considering the controllability of distributed generation (DG), a novel DG-supported inrush current suppression strategy is proposed. The suppression ability of the DG on inrush current in different initial conditions is analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified by simulation and experiment. These show that the proposed strategy can help to enhance the FRT capability of the SST, as well as support the SST to maintain continuous power supply and physical integrity during grid faults.

LLC resonant converters are prone to generating a large inrush current during the start-up process, which will cause damage to the resonant elements and threaten the safe operation of the circuit. In this study, we investigate the soft-start method to suppress the inrush current of an LLC resonant converter. Based on the traditional frequency-decreasing method, we integrate PWM control to broaden the output voltage gain range during the start-up. Additionally, to ensure the smooth establishment of the output voltage, the controller performs the closed-loop control of the duty cycle and frequency in sequence based on the rate of output voltage rise. A prototype experiment based on STM32F334C8T6 is established to experimentally validate the presented soft start-up method. The experiment results indicate that the soft start-up method improves the start-up performance, reduces the maximum inrush current by 47.5% compared with that of the frequency-decreasing method, and builds up the output voltage quickly. Grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) power systems are one of the most promising technologies to address growing energy demand and ecological challenges. This paper proposes smart switching to mitigate inrush currents during the connection of single-phase transformers used in PV systems. An effective inrush current mitigation contributes to the reliability of PV systems. The inrush current severity is influenced by the pseudorandom residual flux at the transformer core and the energization point-on-wave. The most common approach to avoid inrush currents is controlled connection, which requires prior knowledge of the residual flux. However, the residual flux can differ in each case, and its measurement or estimation can be impractical. The proposed smart switching is based on a comprehensive analysis of the residual flux and the de-energization trajectories, and only requires two pieces of data (ϕRM and ϕ0, flux values of the static and dynamic loops when the respective currents are null), calculated from two simple no-load tests. It has a clear advantage over common approaches: no need to estimate or measure the residual flux before each connection, avoiding the need for expensive equipment or complex setups. Smart switching can be easily implemented in practical settings, as it considers different circuit breakers with distinctive aperture features, making it cost-effective for PV systems. Summary: With an input‐side boost inductor, current source inverter (CSI) naturally has the unique performance of voltage boosting and continuous input current, but its switching devices need to have reverse blocking capability. Switched‐capacitor (SC) multilevel inverter (MLI) features self‐balancing capacitor voltages and flexible structure, but it suffers the problems of inrush charging current of capacitors and pulse input current. By combining the CSI's input characteristics and the SC‐MLI's output features, this work presents a new five‐level inverter. Its input current is continuous, and there is no inrush current. In addition, the voltage gain is improved to 2/(1−d), where d is the duty ratio of the inductor's charging mode. With the unique structure, the duty ratio ranges from 0 to 1, and it is independent of the modulation ratio of the inverter. This makes the control more flexible. In addition to topology, operation, and modulation, parameter design, power loss, and comparison study are analyzed in detail. This article addresses the problem of the contact voltage increase caused by the low-frequency oscillation of the train-grid system in the phase-separation process of EMUs. The article establishes the EMU-contact line-traction substation model, reveals the mechanism of low-frequency oscillation, and ascertains the relationship between the phase angle when the pantograph leaves the line, and low-frequency oscillations. Methods to suppress overvoltage during the low-frequency oscillation are proposed. The research indicated that a significant voltage amplitude was observed in the neutral zone, when the phase angle of the pantograph to the contact line separation power supply fell within the range of 60–90° and 240–270°. The maximum voltage amplitude reached 69.75 kV, and there was an occurrence of low-frequency oscillation in the neutral zone, where electrical phase separation takes place. During this oscillation, the voltage of the contact network in the neutral zone mainly operated at one-third of the power frequency (16.7 Hz). However, after installing an RC suppression device in the neutral zone, when low-frequency oscillation occurred, the absolute value of the peak voltage dropped below 37 kV as soon as the EMU entered electric phase separation. Furthermore, compared to situations without a connected suppression device, there was nearly a 30% reduction in the absolute value of the peak voltage. The study provides a basis for the design of the neutral zone of the contact line, and the selection of high-voltage equipment for the EMU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The occurrence of high-amplitude magnetizing inrush current during the energization of a transformer without load poses significant challenges to the stable operation of both the transformer and the power grid, potentially leading to malfunctions in relay protection devices. This paper analyzes the underlying mechanisms of transformer inrush current and presents a novel approach utilizing a soft-start-based method for effectively suppressing inrush currents. The proposed method employs an inrush current suppressor comprising anti-parallel thyristors and filters to mitigate the adverse effects caused by the inrush current. A comparative study is conducted to evaluate the filtering efficacy of three types of filters incorporated in the inrush current suppressor: an LCLC damping filter, a high-order single trap filter and a high-order double trap filter. Through careful analysis and optimization, the high-order double trap filter with parallel RC damping damper is selected as the optimal configuration. To ensure effective suppression, it is necessary to incorporate a filter at the termination point of the anti-parallel thyristor. Additionally, a closed-loop control strategy is implemented to ensure a smooth start and actively suppress the magnetizing inrush current. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, comprehensive simulations are performed using Matlab/Simulink. The results demonstrate the successful suppression of inrush current and the maintenance of stable operation for the transformer. This inrush suppression method does not require considering the influence of residual magnetism and the grounding mode of the transformer's neutral point. The reliability of the transformer differential protection is under threat from multiple interferences, including the inrush condition, the current transformer saturation condition, and the arc fault condition. For improvement, a new method is proposed to discriminate fault conditions and other non-fault conditions. Firstly, the proposed method identifies the unidirectional inrush via unidirectional index, since only it exhibits unidirectional characteristic. Then, the remaining signals are classified by the quartering-based similarity index. The quartering-based similarity index is obtained by quartering segmented fitting to overcome the drawback of overall fitting. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method is able to effectively avoid misjudgments caused by aforementioned interferences. Actual experimental tests, field data tests, and comparison analyses demonstrate its engineering adaptability and superiority.

The direct matrix converter is a well-accepted topology for AC/AC converters. The commutation method should be considered in the direct matrix converter topology to avoid failures caused by the input short circuit and output open circuit during commutations. The conventional three-step commutation method of input voltage not only avoids the aforementioned failures but also removes errors between actual and command output voltage. However, it increases the number of hard switching and the flow of inrush current originating from the mismatch between the turn-on and turn-off delay time of switches. This paper proposes a new three-step commutation method that eliminates inrush current and reduces the number of hard switching. In this way, the conversion efficiency is improved, and circuit hazards caused by inrush current are over. Meanwhile, the proposed commutation method keeps the advantage of canceling the voltage error of conventional three-step commutation. Noteworthy that the proposed commutation method is introduced based on a novel fixed-slope direct duty ratio PWM simplifying the practical implementation. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed method have been verified by simulation and experimental results.

Ensuring a stable and efficient transformer operation is a very crucial task nowadays, especially with the integration of modern and sensitive electrical equipment and appliances down the line. However, transformer maloperation still cannot be completely avoided, particularly with the existence of inrush current that possess similar characteristics as the fault currents when a fault occurred. Thus, this paper proposes an enhanced method for inrush current identification based on a backpropagation (BP) network, optimized using genetic and simulated annealing algorithms. The proposed method has the ability to find the global optimal solution while avoiding local optima, with increased solution accuracy and low calculation complexity. Through extensive simulations, it was found that the inrush and fault currents have differences in their harmonic contents, which can be exploited for the identification of those currents using the proposed identification method. The proposed genetic simulated annealing–BP (GSA-BP) algorithm make use of 200 current samples to improve the detection accuracy of the inrush current from 80% to 97.5%. Comparative studies performed against the existing identification methods show that the GSA-BP network has superior efficiency and accuracy while being practical for real-life application to improve the transformer protection system. The differential protection of transformers sometimes does not have reliable performance facing some faults and events such as saturation of current transformers (CTs) during internal and external faults, inrush currents, and cross‐country faults (CCFs). In this paper, a new transformer differential protection scheme based on the self‐adaptive biased characteristic curve and considering CCFs and various disturbances are used. First, the maximum overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) was used to extract the superior characteristics of sampled differential current of the transformer at different levels. Then, by calculating the duty cycle (D) values of energy coefficients extracted in each periodicity by MATLAB software, a new self‐adaptive biased characteristic curve will be obtained in different operating conditions. Finally, the percentage differential protection operation is adjusted based on the new adaptive characteristic curve zones. Differential current sampling under different operating conditions was performed on a real three‐phase transformer in EMTP software. The simulation results show that the proposed adaptive differential protection scheme can accurately detect various faults and events occurring in the transformer and increase system reliability. This paper introduces an FPGA-based implementation of a smart switch designed to avoid inrush currents occurring during the connection of single-phase transformers utilized in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. The magnitude of inrush currents is notably impacted by the residual flux within the transformer core and the precise moment of energization relative to the wave cycle. Alternative methods frequently hinge on intricate procedures to estimate residual flux. This challenge is adeptly circumvented by the innovative smart control system proposed herein, rendering it a cost-effective solution for grid-connected PV systems. The proposed solution for mitigating inrush current remains effective, even in the face of challenges with current and voltage sensors. This resilience arises from the system’s ability to learn and adapt by leveraging information acquired from the network.

The reliability and stability of differential protection in power transformers could be threatened by several types of inferences, including magnetizing inrush currents, current transformer saturation, and overexcitation from external faults. The robustness of deep learning applications employed for power system protection in recent years has offered solutions to deal with several disturbances. This paper presents a method for detecting internal faults in power transformers occurring simultaneously with inrush currents. It involves utilizing a data window (DW) and stacked denoising autoencoders. Unlike the conventional method, the proposed scheme requires no thresholds to discriminate internal faults and inrush currents. The performance of the algorithm was verified using fault data from a typical Korean 154 kV distribution substation. Inrush current variation and internal faults were simulated and generated in PSCAD/EMTDC, considering various parameters that affect an inrush current. The results indicate that the proposed scheme can detect the appearance of internal faults occurring simultaneously with an inrush current. Moreover, it shows promising results compared to the prevailing methods, ensuring the superiority of the proposed method. From sample N–3, the proposed DNN demonstrates accurate discrimination between internal faults and inrush currents, achieving accuracy, sensitivity, and precision values of 100%.

In switched-capacitor (SC) based multilevel inverters (MLIs), capacitors are usually replenished by a dc voltage source or other capacitors, inrush charging current are found at switching instants. In order to solve this issue, this article presents a new type of step-up MLIs, which is implemented by using a front-side quasi-Z-source unit to feed SC-based multilevel circuits. As a result, the charging current variation of capacitors is effectively limited by the quasi-Z-source impedance. Moreover, the charging voltage can be regulated by controlling the duty ratio of shoot-through states of the quasi-Z-source unit, and the total voltage gain of the new MLI is enhanced as both SC and quasi-Z-source units have boost capability. Structurally, the two units share a common switch network so that the new MLI has simple structure. Topologies for single- and three-phase configurations, operation, and modulation, as well as the parameter design are analyzed in detail. Many communication and signaling systems still rely on cables routed trackside and are thus exposed to induction. The evaluation of induced voltage as touch voltage and as coupled interference is particularly relevant for safety assessment, in terms of electrical and functional safety, and in general for system availability. Induction may be estimated by simplified and conservative closed-form expressions or with more complex simulation models; available models are in general developed for frequency domain. The proposed method provides accurate induced voltage waveform with moderate complexity, as caused by AC traction supply major transients for both 1 × 25 (no autotransformer) and 2 × 25 (with autotransformer) configurations. The method can use simulated or measured frequency responses followed by fitting of a polynomial transfer function H(s) with good approximation (about 3–6%) over an extended frequency interval (up to 1000 Hz). Input to H(s) are the transient waveforms, namely for short circuit and inrush phenomena. For short circuit the proposed calculation method is that of an equivalent circuit including all relevant elements, confronted to standardized method of EN 60909-0 for what regards peak and steady state value and time constant. The H(s) output is the transient induced voltage waveform: comparing the intensity for 1 × 25 and 2 × 25 cases achieves a first validation by comparing to reduction factors documented in the literature. Current transformer saturation affects measurement accuracy and, consequently, protection reliability. One important concern in the case of overcurrent protections is the discrimination between faults and inrush current in power transformers. This paper presents an FPGA-based smart sensor to detect current transformer saturation, especially during inrush current conditions. Several methods have been proposed in the literature, but some are unsuitable for inrush currents due to their particular waveform. The proposed algorithm implemented on the smart sensor uses two time-domain features of the measured secondary current: the second-order difference function and the third-order statistic central moment. The proposed smart sensor presents high effectiveness and immunity against noise with accurate results in different conditions: different residual flux, resistive burdens, sampling frequency, and noise levels. The points at which saturation starts are detected with an accuracy of approximately 100%. Regarding the end of saturation, the proposed method detects the right ending points with a maximum error of a sample. The smart sensor has been tested on experimental online and real-time conditions (including an anti-aliasing filter) with accurate results. Unlike most existing methods, the proposed smart sensor operates efficiently during inrush conditions. High-speed EMUs (electric multiple-units) frequently pass through the phase-separation zone during operation. Overvoltage generated during the operation of the vehicle-mounted circuit breaker has a long duration and high waveform steepness, which accelerates the service life of the vehicle-mounted equipment and is likely to cause insulation failures. For the above-mentioned problems, the operating overvoltage characteristics of high-speed EMU were obtained by traction substation-catenary-EMUs system (SCES) analysis and experiments, thus deriving the influences of the closed phase angle and the residual magnetism of the vehicle-mounted transformer on operating overvoltage. The results showed that the voltage phase of the catenary significantly affected the operating overvoltage, and the closed switching overvoltage was small at 0–40°, 140–210° and 320–350°. The voltage on the primary side of the vehicle-mounted transformer was 60.78 kV, with the transient impact of high-frequency oscillation overvoltage of 22.71 kV, and an initial period of oscillation of 0.01 ms. Then, the period became longer, and it took 0.5 ms for the high-frequency oscillation from attenuation to disappearance. Finally, a scheme of series reactance suppression devices was proposed to protect vehicle-mounted voltage transformers. The Ultra High Voltage (UHV) converter transformer may generate serious inrush current during closing. It will cause commutation voltage distortion and easily result in commutation failure of converters on the same commutation bus. Due to the change of flux amplitude and phase caused by closing resistance in the Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) system, it is difficult to determine the closing time of the converter transformer when considering the influence of residual flux. Therefore, this paper first analyses the existing closing resistance strategy, and constructs the magnetic bias function according to the influence characteristics of closing resistance on the flux and phase. Then an inrush current suppression strategy based on magnetic bias simulation is proposed for star connection and delta connection of UHV converter transformers, which can accurately calculate the ideal closing time of mutual cancellation between the residual flux and bias flux during closing. Finally, the no-load closing model of the UHV converter transformer is established by PSCAD/EMTDC for simulation analysis of the feasibility, real-time verification is carried out using the RTDS closed-loop experimental platform. DC-DC converters are used in many power electronics applications including PV integrated system to boost the voltage to the required level. Many isolated and nonisolated DC-DC converter topologies are used to improve the performance of the PV system. Based on the voltage level and conversion efficiency suitable topology is selected for an application. Performance of the DC-DC converter is evaluated based on inrush current, settling time, switching time, switching losses, switching stress, power output, filter requirement and conversion efficiency. It is very much important to select an appropriate topology for a desired application considering the above parameters. Under the development trend of AC/DC hybrid power grids, converter transformers are indispensable as AC/DC conversion equipment, whose safety and stability are particularly important. There have been many serious accidents where the zero-mode inrush current(abbreviated as ZMIC) of high-impedance transformers caused the zero-sequence backup protection of the transformer and even the upper-level line to malfunction. As a type of high-impedance transformer, the converter transformer may cause the existing zero-sequence protection(abbreviated as ZSP) to malfunction due to the ZMIC generated during no-load operation. However, its winding connection form and no-load operation method are different from ordinary high-impedance transformers. There may be sympathetic interaction between multiple transformers. So, it is necessary to analyze the ZMIC separately.Through the existing ZMIC equivalent circuit of converter transformer, the amplitude relationship and attenuation characteristics of four bipolar converter transformer ZMIC are clear, which lay the foundation of the following protection scheme.The fact that ZMIC may cause the zero-sequence overcurrent protection to malfunction is found through PSCAD (Power Systems Computer-Aided Design) simulation. An inrush current identification scheme based on the station area information of the relationship between zero-mode inrush fundamental wave and harmonic amplitude is proposed. Considering the system resistance, closing angle, CT saturation, and fault conditions, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and its superiority compared with the existing inrush current identification methods are verified.

Grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) power systems are one of the most promising technologies to address growing energy demand and ecological challenges. This paper proposes smart switching to mitigate inrush currents during the connection of single-phase transformers used in PV systems. An effective inrush current mitigation contributes to the reliability of PV systems. The inrush current severity is influenced by the pseudorandom residual flux at the transformer core and the energization point-on-wave. The most common approach to avoid inrush currents is controlled connection, which requires prior knowledge of the residual flux. However, the residual flux can differ in each case, and its measurement or estimation can be impractical. The proposed smart switching is based on a comprehensive analysis of the residual flux and the de-energization trajectories, and only requires two pieces of data (ϕRM and ϕ0, flux values of the static and dynamic loops when the respective currents are null), calculated from two simple no-load tests. It has a clear advantage over common approaches: no need to estimate or measure the residual flux before each connection, avoiding the need for expensive equipment or complex setups. Smart switching can be easily implemented in practical settings, as it considers different circuit breakers with distinctive aperture features, making it cost-effective for PV systems.
