15. Impurity-Induced Electronic Nematic State in Iron-Pnictide Superconductors

Abstract

We propose that impurity-induced electronic nematic state is realized above the orthorhombic structure transition temperature $T_S$ in iron-pnictide superconductors. In the presence of strong orbital fluctuations near $T_S$, it is theoretically revealed that a single impurity induces non-local orbital order with $C_2$-symmetry, consistently with recent STM/STS measurements. Each impurity-induced $C_2$ orbital order aligns along a-axis by applying tiny uniaxial pressure along b-axis. In this impurity-induced nematic phase, the resistivity shows sizable in-plane anisotropy ($\rho_b/\rho_a \sim 2$) even above $T_S$, actually observed in various "detwinned" samples. Abstract

The molecular structure and dynamics of regioregulated poly(3-butylthiophene) (P3BT), poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT), and poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) were investigated using Fourier transform infrared absorption (FTIR), solid state $^{13}$C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. In the DSC measurements, the endothermic peak was obtained around 340 K in P3BT, and assigned to enthalpy relaxation that originated from the glass transition of the thiophene ring twist in crystalline phase from results of FTIR, $^{13}$C cross-polarization and magic-angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR, $^{13}$C spin-lattice relaxation time measurements, and centerband-only detection of exchange (CODEX) measurements. Abstract

Dynamics of Yamamoto-type poly(p-phenylene)[PPP] was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and proton solid-state NMR relaxation spectroscopy. The DSC chart shows the baseline jump without latent heat at 295K, which is due to the glass transition of the polymer. From the variable temperature proton longitudinal relaxation time(T1) measurements, relatively short T1 is observed over the wide temperatures range from 250K (closed to Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman temperature) to 360K, inferred the existence of cooperative critical slowing down associated withthe glass transition. The frequency dependence of proton longitudinal relaxation time at 295K shows R1 ~ w^-0.5 dependence, which is due to the one-dimensional diffusion-like motion of the backbone conformational modulation. The frequency dependence is held at least up to 360K. From these experiments, we were able to observe the twist glass transition of the backbone of PPP, of which critical dynamics has a universality class of the three-dimensional XY model., Comment: 7 pages and 6 figures

Abstract

Dynamics of regio-regulated Poly(4-methylthiazole-2,5-diyl) [HH-P4MeTz] was inves tigated by solid-state 1H, 2D, 13C NMR spectroscopies, and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) measurements. DSC, 2D quadrupolar echo NMR, 13C cross-polarization and magic-angle spinning(CPMAS) NMR, and 2D spin-echo(2DSE) CPMAS NMR spectroscopy suggest existence of a quasi-ordered phase in which backbone twists take place with weakened pi-stackings. Two-dimensional exchange 2D NMR(2DEX) detected slow dynamics with a rate of an order of 10^2Hz for the CD_3 group in d_3-HH-P4MeTz at 288K. The frequency dependence of proton longitudinal relaxation rate at 288K shows a omega^-1/2 dependence, which is due to the one-dimensional diffusion-like motion of backbone conformational modulation waves. The diffusion rate was estimated as 3+/-2 GHz, which was approximately 10^7 times larger than that estimated by 2DEX NMR measurements. These results suggest that there exists anomalous dispersion of modulation waves in HH-P4MeTz. The one-dimensional group velocity of the wave packet is responsible for the behavior of proton longitudinal relaxation time. On the other hand, the 2DEX NMR is sensitive to phase velocity of the nutation of methyl groups that is associated with backbone twists. From proton T_1 and T_2 measurements, the activation energy was estimated as 2.9 and 3.4 kcal/mol, respectively. These were in agreement with 3.0 kcal/mol determined by Moller-Plesset(MP2) molecular orbital(MO) calculation. We also performed chemical shielding calculation of the methyl-carbon in order to understand chemical shift tensor behavior, leading to the fact that a quasi-ordered phase coexist with the crystalline phase., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Phys.Rev.B
