29. The marine fish parasite Nerocila japonica (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) from a euryhaline cyprinid fish (Pseudaspius hakonensis) in brackish waters of a river in central Japan

Abstract

A juvenile of Nerocila japonica Schioedte and Meinert, 1881 was found parasitizing the ventral fin of a bigscaled redfin, Pseudaspius hakonensis (Günther, 1877) (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae), in brackish waters of the Ten-no River on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, central Japan. The river flows into brackish Lake Kamo, which is connected to the southern Sea of Japan. The big-scaled redfin is an unusual cyprinid that can inhabit marine and brackish waters as well as fresh waters, and the fish caught most probably became infected by N. japonica at sea or in the lake and moved upstream in the river. The cymothoid is also considered euryhaline.

Abstract

General anesthesia can increase the volume of the tongue. A large tongue between the upper and lower teeth may be a serious obstacle, especially for tapping during occlusal adjustments in prosthetic treatment. We developed a tongue retractor to eliminate interference by the tongue. This study assesses the effect of the tongue retractor on occlusal adjustment time and describes two patients in which the tongue retractor was used. Methods The study involved five patients and two dentists. Measurements were performed during occlusal adjustment of the molars. 45. Effects of intraperitoneally administered l-histidine on food intake, taste, and visceral sensation in rats

Abstract

To evaluate relative factors for anorectic effects of l-histidine, we performed behavioral experiments for measuring food and fluid intake, conditioned taste aversion (CTA), taste disturbance, and c-Fos immunoreactive (Fos-ir) cells before and after i.p. injection with l-histidine in rats. Animals were injected with saline (9 ml/kg, i.p.) for a control group, and saline (9 ml/kg, i.p.) containing l-histidine (0.75, 1.5, 2.0 g/kg) for a l-histidine group. Injection of l-histidine decreased the average value of food intake, and statistically significant anorectic effects were found in animals injected with 1.5 or 2.0 g/kg l-histidine but not with 0.75 g/kg l-histidine. Taste abnormalities were not detected in any of the groups. Animals injected with 2.0 g/kg l-histidine were revealed to present with nausea by the measurement of CTA. In this group, a significant increase in the number of Fos-ir cells was detected both in the area postrema and the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). In the 0.75 g/kg l-histidine group, a significant increase in the number of Fos-ir cells was detected only in the NTS. When the ventral gastric branch vagotomy was performed, recovery from anorexia became faster than the sham-operated group, however, vagotomized rats injected with 2.0 g/kg l-histidine still acquired CTA. These data indicate that acute anorectic effects induced by highly concentrated l-histidine are partly caused by induction of nausea and/or visceral discomfort accompanied by neuronal activities in the NTS and the area postrema. We suggest that acute and potent effects of l-histidine on food intake require substantial amount of l-histidine in the diet. 50. Contraction Stress of Composite Resin Build-up Procedures for Pulpless Molars.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to photoelastically evaluate contraction stresses associated with various resin composite build-up procedures for pulpless molars. Materials and Methods: Photoelastic models of endodontically treated mandibular molars were fabricated to simulate a preparation for a full-cast crown. The model configuration included three lateral walls, but no post space. The buildups were made with dual-curing resin composite using the following procedures: 1) bulk dual cure, 2) bulk chemical cure, 3) horizontal two increments, dual cure, and 4) indirect. Five specimens were fabricated for each condition. The stresses developed in the models were recorded photographically in the field of a circular polariscope. Results: The build-up procedures tested generated widely different stress distributions and intensities. The highest stresses were seen with the bulk dual-cure method. The slower polymerization chemical-cure group developed distributions similar to the bulk dual-cure group with a significantly lower fringe order. The two horizontal increments dual-cure techniques developed an individual group of fringes for each layer. Compared with the bulk dual-cure group, stresses around the occlusal margin were reduced by incrementalization, while fringes were more closely spaced at the line angles with a slightly lower fringe order. The indirect method demonstrated the lowest stress which extended over the smallest area. Conclusion: Contraction stress in resin composite buildups varied significantly depending upon the procedures of fabrication. The bulk dual-cure method developed the most severe contraction stresses, while the indirect technique resulted in significantly lower contraction stresses than the other techniques tested.
