Abstract

We construct a quasi-canonical lifting of a $K3$ surface of finite height over a finite field of characteristic $p\geq3$. Such results are previously obtained by Nygaard-Ogus when $p\geq5$. For this purpose, we use the display-theoretic deformation theory developed by Langer, Zink, and Lau. We study the display structure of the crystalline cohomology of deformations of a $K3$ surface of finite height in terms of the Dieudonn\'e display of the enlarged formal Brauer group., Comment: 14 pages

Abstract

Abstract. We measured πE invariant mass spectra below and above the K¯N mass threshold in the K−d → NπE reaction in order to study the K¯N interaction and the Λ(1405) resonance. This reaction can be described by the two-step process: (i) K¯N1 → K¯N followed by (ii) K¯N2 → πΣ, where N1 and N2 are nucleons bound in the deuteron. We deduced the S -wave scattering amplitude of K¯N →K¯N in the framework of the K¯N πΣ coupled channel so as to reproduce the observed πΣ spectra in the I = 0 channel. We found a resonance pole at 1417.7-7.4+6.0 (fitting error)-1.0+1.1 (systematic error) - i[26.9-7.9+6.0 (fitting error)-2.0+1.7 (systematic error)]MeV/c2.

Abstract

Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) has received attention for the treatment of locally recurrent rectal cancer. When the surrounding primary organs are close to the irradiation site, a spacer is required to ensure safe irradiation. This work describes a novel technique using a bioabsorbable polyglycolic acid spacer placed laparoscopically and presents a technical report with five case studies. The short‐term surgical outcomes were as follows: mean operating time 235 min with blood loss of 38 mL. CIRT was planned, and the patients underwent irradiation within 2 months of surgery. No pelvic infections occurred, and all procedures were performed safely. Herein, were present a technical report with reference to a video of the surgical procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Transcription factor nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) shows cooperative switch-like activation followed by prolonged oscillatory nuclear translocation in response to extracellular stimuli. These dynamics are important for activation of the NF-κB transcriptional machinery, however, NF-κB activity regulated by coordinated actions of these dynamics has not been elucidated at the system level. Using a variety of B cells with artificially rewired NF-κB signaling networks, we show that oscillations and switch-like activation of NF-κB can be dissected and that, under some conditions, these two behaviors are separated upon antigen receptor activation. Comprehensive quantitative experiments and mathematical analysis showed that the functional role of switch activation in the NF-κB system is to overcome transient IKK (IκB kinase) activity to amplify nuclear translocation of NF-κB, thereby inducing the prolonged NF-κB oscillatory behavior necessary for target gene expression and B-cell activation.

Abstract

An experiment to search for the $K^-pp$ bound state was performed via the in-flight $^3$He($K^-,n)$ reaction using 5.3 $\times$ $10^9$ kaons at 1 GeV/$c$ at the J-PARC hadron experimental facility. In the semi-inclusive neutron missing-mass spectrum at $\theta_{n}^{lab}=0^\circ$, no significant peak was observed in the region corresponding to $K^-pp$ binding energy larger than 80 MeV, where a bump structure has been reported in the $\Lambda p$ final state in different reactions. Assuming the state to be isotropically decaying into $\Lambda p$, mass-dependent upper limits on the production cross section were determined to be 30--180, 70--250, and 100--270 $\mu$b/sr, for the natural widths of 20, 60, and 100 MeV, respectively, at 95\% confidence level., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Stripe rust is a devastating fungal disease of wheat caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp tritici (Pst). The WHEAT KINASE START1 (WKS1) resistance gene has an unusual combination of serine/threonine kinase and START lipid binding domains and confers partial resistance to Pst. Here, we show that wheat (Triticum aestivum) plants transformed with the complete WKS1 (variant WKS1.1) are resistant to Pst, whereas those transformed with an alternative splice variant with a truncated START domain (WKS1.2) are susceptible. WKS1.1 and WKS1.2 preferentially bind to the same lipids (phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylinositol phosphates) but differ in their protein-protein interactions. WKS1.1 is targeted to the chloroplast where it phosphorylates the thylakoid-associated ascorbate peroxidase (tAPX) and reduces its ability to detoxify peroxides. Increased expression of WKS1.1 in transgenic wheat accelerates leaf senescence in the absence of Pst. Based on these results, we propose that the phosphorylation of tAPX by WKS1.1 reduces the ability of the cells to detoxify reactive oxygen species and contributes to cell death. This response takes several days longer than typical hypersensitive cell death responses, thus allowing the limited pathogen growth and restricted sporulation that is characteristic of the WKS1 partial resistance response to Pst.

Abstract

A new spectrometer system was designed and constructed at the secondary beam line K1.8BR in the hadron hall of J-PARC to investigate $\bar K N$ interactions and $\bar K$-nuclear bound systems. The spectrometer consists of a high precision beam line spectrometer, a liquid $^3$He/$^4$He/D$_2$ target system, a Cylindrical Detector System that surrounds the target to detect the decay particles from the target region, and a neutron time-of-flight counter array located $\sim$15 m downstream from the target position.
