Reduced impulse control and emotion dysregulation are associated with an increased risk of violence in psychosis. We used an emotional stop-signal task (ESST) with angry and neutral facial expressions stimuli to examine the differences in inhibition in neutral and emotional contexts between acutely violent (N = 117) and non-violent (N = 50) patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and healthy volunteers (N = 50). However, 66 violent patients (56.41%) from the final sample with a higher level of self-reported impulsivity did not finish the behavioral task. Inhibition was found to be weaker in emotional than in neutral contexts in both the violent (n = 51) and non-violent patient groups in comparison with healthy controls. At the same time, violent patients had weaker inhibition in both neutral and emotional contexts than non-violent patients and healthy controls. Violent patients also showed significant associations between response inhibition and positive schizophrenia symptoms. These results show that emotion regulation impairment is present in schizophrenia patients in general and violent behavior is associated with higher impulsivity regardless of the emotional context. Impaired response inhibition seems to be a stronger indicator for violent patients than the disorder itself, and it may constitute a marker for the risk of violent behavior in psychotic patients. Positive symptoms might fall into underlying factors of increased impulsivity in acutely violent psychotic patients. Although childhood maltreatment (CM) is one of the important factors in the psychopathology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), it may affect OCD along with other potential factors such as behavioral inhibition. Thus, the current research was conducted to determine the direct effect of CM on obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms and its indirect effect through behavioral inhibition in patients clinically diagnosed with OCD. Patients with OCD (n= 360, females=67.8%, mean age=35.72 years, age range=20-58 years) were randomly selected and they completed the scales assessing childhood adversity, OC symptom dimensions, behavioral inhibition system (BIS), depressive symptoms, and general OCD severity. Results showed the direct and indirect effects (through BIS) of CM on OC symptoms after controlling for the severity of depressive symptoms. In addition, the indirect effect of CM on OCD severity was affected by BIS. The study shows the role of BIS concerning OCD symptoms and general severity in patients diagnosed with OCD exposed to CM. Although aggression's brain correlates have attracted attention in recent years, to date, its principles remain unclear. We speculate that, according to mastery motivation for aggression (disinhibition-control), aggression can be divided into two types, aggression under disinhibition and aggression under control, and that the two types should have different brain correlates. To test our hypothesis, voxel-based morphometry was used to explore the interaction of aggression and self-control on brain structural features (gray matter volume, GMV) in 202 undergraduate and graduate students. The Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) and the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) were used to measure individual differences in aggression (including total aggression and the four aggression dimensions) and self-control, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated significant interaction between BPAQ and BSCS scores on the GMV of bilateral Area Fo1 (orbital frontal cortex, OFC). Furthermore, the interactions of two aggression dimensions (physical aggression and anger) and self-control significantly correlated with the GMV of bilateral Area Fo1 and right Area Op5 (frontal operculum, FOP), respectively. Further, moderation effect and simple slope analysis found that, among individuals with high self-control but not among individuals with high disinhibition, aggression (including total aggression and physical aggression) was negatively associated with the GMV of bilateral Area Fo1 and that anger (an aggression dimension) was negatively associated with the GMV of right Area Op5, respectively. Cognitive function and psychological well-being are two variables related to mental health. Several studies have shown that these variables are sensitive to acute physical exercise, but it is not known which doses of exercise are the most adaptive. To explore this issue, 35 adolescents performed three sessions of physical education with different intensities: no-exercise, light/moderate exercise, and moderate/vigorous exercise, controlling intensities with accelerometers. Stroop test and well-being questionnaires were used before and after each session. The repeated measures design showed that cognitive inhibition was significantly higher after physical exercise sessions than in the non-exercise session, with no differences between the exercise intensity conditions. Vitality increased only in the non-exercise session and positive affect increased and negative affect decreased after the light/moderate physical exercise session only. Research has suggested that individuals high in the trait tendency to ruminate have an increased risk for the development of psychopathology. Recent literature has begun to identify how rumination affects cognitive processes in order to document mechanisms of this risk. The current report evaluated the effects of both state and trait rumination on memory processes. Seventy undergraduates selected based on high and low levels of the trait tendency to ruminate completed the retrieval inhibition task. Prior to final recall, participants were randomly assigned to engage in either a rumination or distraction task. Results found that state rumination impaired retrieval-induced forgetting, and trait rumination impaired forgetting of no longer relevant stimuli. Additional analyses suggested that self-report of shifting ability was associated with reduced inhibiting of irrelevant stimuli. The objective of this research was to study attentional tendencies, specifically the effect of inhibition of return (IOR), comparing a sample of young adults (N = 72) and elderly (N = 74). A task of attention discrimination was used in combination with SOAs (Stimulus Onset Asynchrony) of 300, 750,100 and 1500 ms are used. The results showed that both groups obtained higher reaction times (RT) for the cued assays than the uncued, these data indicated the existence of an IOR effect. In addition, the young adults continued a course of constant decrease in their RT as the SOA increases, however, the older ones also followed a decrease in their RT until reaching the SOA of 1500 ms in which they experienced a significant increase. Oxytocin is important for social interactions and maternal behaviour. However, little is known about when, where and how oxytocin modulates neural circuits to improve social cognition. Here we show how oxytocin enables pup retrieval behaviour in female mice by enhancing auditory cortical pup call responses. Retrieval behaviour required the left but not right auditory cortex, was accelerated by oxytocin in the left auditory cortex, and oxytocin receptors were preferentially expressed in the left auditory cortex. Neural responses to pup calls were lateralized, with co-tuned and temporally precise excitatory and inhibitory responses in the left cortex of maternal but not pup-naive adults. Finally, pairing calls with oxytocin enhanced responses by balancing the magnitude and timing of inhibition with excitation. Our results describe fundamental synaptic mechanisms by which oxytocin increases the salience of acoustic social stimuli. Furthermore, oxytocin-induced plasticity provides a biological basis for lateralization of auditory cortical processing. Emotional rumination and inhibition were identified in the Emotion Control Questionnaire (ECQ--Roger and Nesshoever 1987; Roger and Najarian 1989) as two relatively independent dimensions of emotional style, and the two measures have subsequently been shown to be important moderator variables in a range of health and forensic settings. Two other dimensions that emerged in the ECQ, labelled aggression control and benign control, have been shown to form part of the extraversion constellation, and the present paper describes the construction and validation of a new scale focusing exclusively on rumination and inhibition. Revised and expanded item pools for the scales were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, which endorsed the two-factor structure. The new scales were validated concurrently against related scales in different samples, and were shown to be systematically related to two independent indices of health status. Two experiments investigated extinction and blocking of a conditioned inhibitor in a human contingency-learning task. Lotz and Lachnit (2009) and Melchers, Wolff, and Lachnit (2006) reported extinction of inhibition only when participants experienced outcome levels lower than those used in training. In Experiment I, which used more neutral instructions than the previously mentioned studies, we found that extinction of inhibition occurred, whether or not participants experienced lower outcome levels. In Experiment 2, we applied this outcome manipulation to blocking of a conditioned inhibitor. We found blocking of inhibition both when participants had experience with lower outcomes and when they did not. The results of our two experiments are consistent with Rescorla and Wagner's (1972) associative model, and inconsistent with an inferential account of causal learning (De Houwer, Beckers, & Vandorpe, 2005). doi: 10.3758/LB.38.4.394

Selective attention requires the ability to focus on relevant information and to ignore irrelevant information. The ability to inhibit irrelevant information has been proposed to be the main source of age-related cognitive change (e.g., Hasher & Zacks, 1988). Although age-related distraction by irrelevant information has been extensively demonstrated in the visual modality, studies involving auditory and cross-modal paradigms have revealed a mixed pattern of results. A comparative evaluation of these paradigms according to sensory modality suggests a twofold trend: Age-related distraction is more likely (a) in unimodal than in cross-modal paradigms and (b) when irrelevant information is presented in the visual modality, rather than in the auditory modality. This distinct pattern of age-related changes in selective attention may be linked to the reliance of the visual and auditory modalities on different filtering mechanisms. Distractors presented through the auditory modality can be filtered at both central and peripheral neurocognitive levels. In contrast, distractors presented through the visual modality are primarily suppressed at more central levels of processing, which may be more vulnerable to aging. We propose the hypothesis that age-related distractibility is modality dependent, a notion that might need to be incorporated in current theories of cognitive aging. Ultimately, this might lead to a more accurate account for the mixed pattern of impaired and preserved selective attention found in advancing age. From a neuropsychological perspective, the cognitive skills of working memory, inhibition, and attention and the maturation of the frontal lobe are requisites for successful A-not-B performance on both the looking and reaching versions of the task. This study used a longitudinal design to examine the developmental progression of infants' performance on the looking and reaching versions of the A-not-B task. Twenty infants were tested on both versions of the task once a month from 5 to 10 months of age. Infants had higher object permanence scores on the looking version of the task from 5 to 8 months, with comparable performance across response modalities at 9 and 10 months. The same pattern of performance was found on nonreversal (A) trials: Infants performed better on looking trials from 5 to 7 months, and they performed equally on both response trials from 8 to 10 months. Overall, infants performed better on looking reversal (B) trials than reaching reversal trials. These data suggest that performance differences between response modalities early in development can be attributed to major differences in the maturation of brain circuitry associated with the actual task response. Inhibitory control is a cognitive mechanism that contributes to successful self-control (i.e., adherence to a long-term goal in the face of an interfering short-term goal). This research explored the effect of imagined positive emotional events on inhibition. The authors proposed that the influence of imagined emotions on inhibition depends on whether the considered emotion corresponds to the attainment of a long-term goal (i.e., pride) or a short-term goal (i.e., happiness). The authors predicted that in an antisaccade task that requires inhibition of a distractor, imagining a happiness-eliciting event is likely to harm inhibitory processes compared with imagining a pride-eliciting event, because the former but not the latter primes interfering short-term goals. The results showed that imagining a happiness-eliciting event decreased inhibition relative to imagining a pride-eliciting event. The results suggest a possible mechanism underlying the role of imagined positive emotions in pursuit of goals that require self-control. Backward inhibition (BI) is a performance cost that occurs when an individual returns to a task after 1 (vs. more than 1) intervening trial, and it may reflect the inhibition of task-set components during switching. In 3 experiments, we support the theory that inhibition can target cue-based preparatory stages of a task. Participants performed a cued target-localization task that had been previously shown to produce BI. In Experiment 1, reassignment of arbitrary cue-target pairings midway through the experiment doubled the size of BI, though cue, target, and response sets remained unchanged. In Experiment 2, we controlled for effects of order of conditions or simple change of cue meaning. In Experiment 3, we demonstrated that the effect depends on re-pairing members of the same cue and target sets. The results are attributed to heightened conflict (and hence greater inhibition) during cue-target translation when a previously learned cue-target mapping is remapped. Task switching requires maintaining readiness to execute any task of a given set of tasks. However, when tasks switch, the readiness to execute the now-irrelevant task generates interference, as seen in the task rule incongruence effect. Overcoming such interference requires fine-tuned inhibition that impairs task readiness only minimally. In an experiment involving 2 object classification tasks and 2 location classification tasks, the authors show that irrelevant task rules that generate response conflicts are inhibited. This competitor rule suppression (CRS) is seen in response slowing in subsequent trials, when the competing rules become relevant. CRS is shown to operate on specific rules without affecting similar rules. CRS and backward inhibition, which is another inhibitory phenomenon, produced additive effects on reaction time, suggesting their mutual independence. Implications for current formal theories of task switching as well as for conflict monitoring theories are discussed. We studied the learning produced by simple exposures to a stimulus. Exposures depressed orienting and subsequent conditioned freezing in rats. A remotely preexposed conditioned stimulus (CS) conditioned better and overshadowed a novel CS more than a recently preexposed CS. Additional preexposures reversed these effects: a remotely preexposed CS elicited more orienting, conditioned worse and overshadowed less than a recently preexposed CS. Exposure to a compound composed of a novel CS and a remotely preexposed CS resulted in the novel CS subsequently conditioning better than a novel CS exposed in compound with a recently preexposed CS. The results were interpreted to mean that stimulus-alone exposures produce a loss in associability which recovers across time, that this restoration deepens the loss in associability, and that this deepening is regulated by a common error term. In Experiments 1 and 2a rats received an A+/AX- discrimination in a rectangular pool with two submerged platforms in diagonally opposite corners--the correct comers--for A+ trials. For AX--trials, rats were placed in the pool without the platforms but with identical landmarks, X, in the correct comers. Landmark X subsequently passed both a summation and retardation test for inhibition in Experiment 1. Upon completion of the discrimination in Experiment 2a, the platforms were placed near identical landmarks in the correct corners of the rectangle. The landmarks were those used for discrimination training for a superconditioning group (AX+ trials), but for a control group they were novel (AY+ trials). During a final test in the pool without the landmarks and the platforms, the superconditioning group spent more time than the control group searching in the correct comers. This finding, which was replicated in a kite-shaped pool in Experiment 2b, demonstrates successful superconditioning by landmark X of the cues created by the shapes of the pools. A series of experiments used the compound test procedure (Rescorla, 2002) to measure the size of spontaneous recovery of freezing responses by rats to a latently inhibited and/or extinguished conditioned stimulus (CS). The size of recovery was greater: to a pre-exposed and conditioned CS than to a CS just conditioned or just pre-exposed; to an extensively pre-exposed or extinguished CS than to a moderately pre-exposed or extinguished CS; and to a pre-exposed and extinguished CS than to a CS just pre-exposed or just extinguished. These results show that the size of recovery is proportional to the size of the depression produced by CS-alone exposures regardless of whether they occurred before, after, or both before and after conditioning. The results are discussed in terms of some contemporary models of recovery and of the inferences permitted by the use of the compound assessment technique. This article examines how relative differences in power affect responses to poor performers in organizations. We predicted that higher power individuals would engage in approach-related behaviors, whereas lower power individuals would be inhibited when responding to poor performers. Results from a scenario study and a field study generally supported this prediction, indicating that power was positively related to training of confronting a poor performer and negatively related to compensating for of rejecting a poor performer. A second scenario study investigated the effect of the interaction of power and emotion on individual responses to poor performers. Results showed that the type of emotion expressed moderated the effect of power on inhibition-related responses. We discuss implications for managing poor performers with relative power differences. We investigated whether the cumulative semantic inhibition effect found by Howard, Nickels, Coltheart, and Cole-Virtue (2006) provides information about semantic representations. By applying more sensitive statistical analyses to the original data set, we found a significant variation in the magnitude of the effect across categories. This variation cannot be explained by the naming speed of each category. In addition, using a subsample of the data, a second cumulative effect arouse for newly defined supracategories, over and above the effect of the original ones. In 3 experiments, a total of 151 monolingual and bilingual 6-year-old children performed similarly on measures of language and cognitive ability; however, bilinguals solved the global--local and trail-making tasks more rapidly than monolinguals. This bilingual advantage was found not only for the traditionally demanding conditions (incongruent global--local trials and Trails B) but also for the conditions not usually considered to be cognitively demanding (congruent global--local trials and Trails A). All the children performed similarly when congruent trials were presented in a single block or when perceptually simple stimuli were used, ruling out speed differences between the groups. The results demonstrate a bilingual advantage in processing complex stimuli in tasks that require executive processing components for conflict resolution, including switching and updating, even when no inhibition appears to be involved. They also suggest that simple conditions of the trail--making and global--local tasks involve some level of effortful processing for young children. Finally, the bilingual advantage in the trail-making task suggests that the interpretation of standardized measures of executive control needs to be reconsidered for children with specific experiences, such as bilingualism. We examined the relation between cognitive development and fear, anxiety, and behavioral inhibition in a non-clinical sample of 226 Dutch children aged 4-9 years. To assess cognitive development, children were tested with Piagetian conservation tasks and a Theory-of-Mind (TOM) test. Fears were measured by means of a self-report scale completed by the children, while anxiety symptoms and behavioral inhibition were indexed by rating scales that were filled out by parents. Significant age trends were observed for some anxiety phenomena. For example, younger children displayed higher fear scores, whereas older children exhibited higher levels of generalized anxiety. Most importantly, results of regression analyses (in which we controlled for age) indicated that cognitive development, and in particular TOM ability, made a unique and significant contribution to various domains of behavioral inhibition. In all cases, higher levels of TOM were associated with lower levels of behavioral inhibition. Using a variation on the standard procedure of conditioned inhibition (Trials A+ and AX-), rats (Rattus norvegicus) in a circular pool were trained to find a hidden platform that was located in a specific spatial position in relation to 2 individual landmarks (Trials A [right arrow] platform and B [right arrow] platform; Experiments 1a and 1b) and to 2 configurations of landmarks (Trials ABC [right arrow] platform and FGH [right arrow] platform; Experiment 2a). The rats also underwent inhibitory trials (Experiment 1: Trials AZ [right arrow] no platform; Experiment 2a: Trials CDE [right arrow] no platform) interspersed with these excitatory trials. In both experiments, subsequent test trials without the platform showed both a summation effect and retardation of excitatory conditioning, and in Experiment 2a rats learned to avoid the CDE quadrant over the course of the experiment. Two further experiments established that these results could not be attributed to any difference in salience between the conditioned inhibitors and the control stimuli. All these results contribute to the growing body of evidence consistent with the idea that there is a general mechanism of learning that is associative in nature. Two conditioned suppression experiments with rats investigated the influence on latent inhibition of compounding a Pavlovian conditioned inhibitor with the target cue during preexposure treatment. Results were compared with those of subjects that received conventional latent inhibition training, no preexposure, or preexposure to the target cue in compound with a neutral stimulus. In Experiment 1, greater attenuation of the latent inhibition effect was observed in subjects that received target preexposure in compound with a Pavlovian conditioned inhibitor relative to subjects that received preexposure with a neutral stimulus or to the target alone. In Experiment 2, this protection from latent inhibition was attenuated if the excitor that was used to train the conditioned inhibitor was extinguished between preexposure and target training. The results are consistent with an account offered by the extended comparator hypothesis. Memory suppression is investigated with the no-think paradigm, which produces forgetting following repeated practice of not thinking about a memory [Anderson MC, Green C (2001) Nature 410:366-369]. Because the forgotten item is not retrieved even when tested with an independent, semantically related cue, it has been assumed that this forgetting is due to an inhibition process. However, this conclusion is based on a single stage to recall, whereas global memory models, which produce forgetting through a process of interference, include both a sampling and a recovery stage to recall. By assuming that interference exists during recovery, these models can explain cue-independent forgetting. We tested several predictions of this interference explanation of cue-independent forgetting by modifying the think/no-think paradigm. We added a condition where participants quickly pressed enter rather than not thinking. We also manipulated initial memory strength and tested recognition memory. Most importantly, learning to quickly press enter produced as much cue-independent forgetting as no-think instructions. Response inhibition is a hallmark of cognitive control. An executive system inhibits responses by activating a stop goal when a stop signal is presented. The authors asked whether the stop goal could be primed by task-irrelevant information in stop-signal and go/no-go paradigms. In Experiment 1, the task-irrelevant primes GO, ###, or STOP were presented in the go stimulus. Go performance was slower for STOP than for ### or GO. This suggests that the stop goal was primed by task-irrelevant information. In Experiment 2, STOP primed the stop goal only in conditions in which the goal was relevant to the task context. In Experiment 3, GO, ###, or STOP were presented as stop signals. Stop performance was slower for GO than for ### or STOP. These findings suggest that task goals can be primed and that response inhibition and executive control can be influenced by automatic processing. In two conditioned suppression experiments with rats as subjects, the authors examined two classes of accounts of spontaneous recovery of excitation and inhibition. One view suggests that spontaneous recovery occurs due to greater temporal instability of inhibitory associations, whereas the other posits that spontaneous recovery occurs due to greater temporal instability of second-learned associations. These accounts diverge in predictions concerning spontaneous recovery when the first-learned association is inhibitory and the second-learned association is excitatory. Using different designs, Experiments 1 and 2 found spontaneous recovery of both excitation and inhibition. Six experiments used a magazine approach paradigm with rats to investigate latent inhibition (LI). Experiment I found that compound conditioning did not increase evidence for LI, in contrast to predictions from acquisition-deficit models that are based on a common error term (e.g., J. M. Pearce & G. Hall, 1980; A. R. Wagner, 1981). Instead, it appeared that preexposed and non-preexposed stimuli conditioned to the same asymptote following compound conditioning, as is the case when these stimuli are conditioned separately. This was confirmed in three further experiments that used probe trials to measure conditioning to each conditioned stimulus across the course of compound training. In these experiments, LI was observed during initial but not extended compound training, consistent with predictions derived from M. E. Bouton (1997) and the SLG model (N. A. Schmajuk, Y. Lam, & J. A. Gray, 1996). However, 2 further experiments did not support these models. Instead, these findings are most consistent with models that use separate error terms to compute the associative strength of conditioned stimuli conditioned in compound (S. E. Brandon, E. H. When one is sequentially switching among three tasks, performance is impaired when tasks alternate (ABA) relative to when one is switching between all three tasks (CBA), an effect known as backward inhibition (BI). BI is not observed when component tasks are uniquely located in space, however (Arbuthnott, 2005). In this study, the locations of task precues and target stimuli were manipulated independently to determine whether this elimination of BI is related to distinct cue location or to distinct target location. Results clearly indicated that BI is eliminated with distinct cue localization independent of the location of target stimuli. This indicates that BI, which reflects suppression of task-set representations, can be influenced by cue characteristics that are associated with task representations.

Memory research on the part-set cuing effect has shown that providing some of the to-be-remembered items as cues is not always beneficial and, in some cases, may even hurt retrieval. However, part-set cuing has been sparsely investigated in option generation tasks. Thus, limited empirical evidence for the existence of the effect in option generation is available, and no convincing explanation has been provided yet. In order to fill these gaps, we carried out four experiments. In Experiment 1A, we observed a significant decrease in option generation performance when potential options were presented as cues. Experiment 1B showed that the effect can also he obtained in older adults. Experiments 2A and 2B provided evidence compatible with an inhibition-based explanation of the observed effects.

In two three-phase experiments, rats received a final third excitatory (Experiment 1) or inhibitory (Experiment 2) phase of conditioning with a tone. The third phase came immediately prior to a test with the tone, either in the context where the tone was trained or in a different context. Groups differed in each experiment with respect to the first two phases. Rats in Groups EIE (Experiment 1) and EII (Experiment 2) received excitatory conditioning with the tone in Phase 1, followed by inhibitory conditioning with the tone. Rats in Groups lEE (Experiment 1) and IEI (Experiment 2) received inhibitory conditioning in Phase 1, followed by excitatory conditioning in Phase 2. Thus, the association being expressed in Phase 3 was consistent either with what was learned first about the stimuli or with what was learned second. Contrary to expectations, the association being expressed at the end of Phase 3, either excitatory or inhibitory, was affected by a context change, regardless of its consistency with what was learned first about the CS.

In three human causal learning experiments, we examined attentional modulation in the blocking task, in which participants typically learn little about a novel cue B when it is paired with a previously trained, predictive cue A. Evidence indicates that this blocking training led to a decrement in attention to the blocked cue B. The present experiments addressed whether this decrease in attention to the blocked cue could be better explained as being due to lateral inhibition from the pretrained cue A to the blocked cue B, or as a cue-specific property that is not conditional on the presence or absence of other stimuli. Strong effects of learned predictiveness were observed on participants' causal judgments (Experiment 1) and choice behavior (Experiments 2 and 3). However, no evidence for lateral inhibitory processes emerged in any of the experiments, despite explicit attempts to maximize experimental sensitivity to this effect. The results are discussed in the context of formal models of the operation of attentional processes in human and animal learning.

It is proposed that the mind and brain often work at a gross level and only with fine tuning or inhibition act in a more differentiated manner, even when one might think the domains being issued the global command should be distinct. This applies to disparate findings in cognitive science and neuroscience in both children and adults. Thus, it is easier to switch everything, or nothing, than to switch one thing (the rule one is following or which button to press) but not the other. It is easier to issue the same command to both hands than to move only one hand. If one needs to respond to the opposite (or antonym) of a stimulus, one is faster if the correct response is to the side opposite the stimulus. People tend to think of the nervous system as sending out very precise commands only to the relevant recipient, but it appears that often the command goes out more globally and then parts of the system need to be inhibited from acting on the command. In Experiment la, participants were exposed, over a series of trials, to separate presentations of 2 similar checkerboard stimuli, AX and BX (where X represents a common background). In one group, AX and BX were presented on alternating trials (intermixed), in another, they were presented in separate blocks of trials (blocked). The intermixed group performed to a higher standard than the blocked group on a same--different test. A superiority of intermixed over blocked exposure was also evident in a within-subject design (Experiment lb) and when the test required discrimination between a preexposed stimulus and the background (e.g., AX vs. X), even if the background changed between preexposure and test (AY vs. Y) (Experiment 2). In Experiment 3, the intermixed/blocked effect was observed when, in preexposure, stimulus presentations were alternated with the background alone (e.g., AX/X). This suggests that the perceptual learning effect is not the consequence of inhibitory associations between unique features but to increased salience of those features. When some perceptual--motor relationships are reversed, participants might adopt a global inhibition strategy that replaces all normal movements with reversed movements. In two experiments, participants practiced moving a cursor from a start position to target locations. In a perceptual-motor reversal condition, in which horizontal but not vertical movements were reversed, participants were trained to move only to certain locations. Testing involved moving to all locations under the same reversal condition. Training on a subset of locations yielded partial transfer to untrained locations. These results support a global inhibition hypothesis modified to include both midcourse corrective movements and training specificity.

This study examined the selective attention abilities of a simple, artificial, evolved agent and considered implications of the agent's performance for theories of selective attention and action. The agent processed two targets in continuous time, catching one and then the other. This task required many cognitive operations, including prioritizing the first target (TI) over the second (T2); selectively focusing responses on TI, while preventing T2 from interfering with responses; creating a memory for the unselected T2 item, so that it could be efficiently processed later; and reallocating processing towards T2 after catching TI. The evolved agent demonstrated all these abilities. Analysis shows that the agent used reactive inhibition to selectively focus behavior. That is, the more salient T2, the more strongly responses towards T2 were inhibited and the slower the agent was to subsequently reallocate processing towards T2. Reactive inhibition was also suggested in two experiments with people, performing a virtually identical catch task. The presence of reactive inhibition in the simple agent and in people suggests that it is an important mechanism for selective processing. Traditional associative models assume that associative weights are updated on a trial-by-trial basis. As a result, it is usually expected that responses based on these weights will tend to reflect the most recently presented contingencies. However, a number of studies of human causal judgments have shown primacy effects, wherein judgments obtained at the end of a series of trials are more strongly influenced by a contingency that was in force early in the sequence than by a contingency that was in force later in the sequence. The experiments described in this article replicated other work showing that requesting causal judgments during a sequence can reverse primacy and produce strong recency effects. Evidence was also obtained to suggest that primacy effects are produced by an interaction between latent inhibition and extinction processes and that requesting a judgment affects both of these processes.

Harmonic priming studies have shown that a musical context with its tonal center influences target chord processing. In comparison with targets following baseline contexts, which do not establish a specific tonal center, processing is facilitated for a strongly related target functioning as the tonic, but inhibited for unrelated (out-of-key) and less related (subdominant) targets. This study investigated cost and benefit patterns for the processing of the 3 most important chords of the harmonic hierarchy. Response time patterns reflected the chords' ranking: Processing was fastest for the tonic, followed by the dominant, and then the subdominant. The comparison with baseline contexts replicated the benefit of processing for tonic targets (Experiments 1 and 3) and the cost of processing for subdominant targets (Experiment 3), while dominant targets were situated at baseline level (Experiments 1 to 3). Findings indicate that listeners implicitly understand fine differences in tonal stabilities and confirm the special status of the tonic being the most expected and solely facilitated chord at the end of a tonal context. In a recent article, the authors (Miller & Shettleworth, 2007) showed how the apparently exceptional features of behavior in geometry learning ('reorientation') experiments can be modeled by assuming that geometric and other features at given locations in an arena are learned competitively as in the Rescorla-Wagner model and that the probability of visiting a location is proportional to the total associative strength of cues at that location relative to that of all relevant locations. Reinforced or unreinforced visits to locations drive changes in associative strengths. Dawson, Kelly, Spetch, and Dupuis (2008) have correctly pointed out that at parameter values outside the ranges the authors used to simulate a body of real experiments, our equation for choice probabilities can give impossible and/or wildly fluctuating results. Here, the authors show that a simple modification of the choice rule eliminates this problem while retaining the transparent way in which the model relates spatial choice to competitive associative learning of cue values. Considerable evidence indicates that associations may be formed between two events even when one or both of them is absent at the time of learning Previously, some researchers asserted that excitatory associations are formed when associatively activated representations for two events are paired, whereas others claimed that inhibitory associations are formed. In three experiments, the authors investigated the nature of tone-sucrose learning when associatively activated representations of those events were paired in the absence of either of the events themselves. Experiment 1 found substantial excitatory learning when the tone surrogate preceded the sucrose surrogate in training. Experiment 2 evaluated other accounts for the results of Experiment 1, and Experiment 3 found evidence for inhibitory tone-sucrose learning when the tone and sucrose surrogates were presented in simultaneous or backward order. The results indicated that the nature of representation-mediated learning is influenced by some of the same variables as more standard associative learning. Rats were given exposure either to an odor (almond) or a compound of odor plus taste (almond plus saline), prior to training in which the odor served as the conditioned stimulus. It was found, for both appetitive and aversive procedures, that conditioning was retarded by pre-exposure (a latent inhibition effect), and the extent of the retardation was greater in rats preexposed to the compound (i.e., latent inhibition to the odor was potentiated by the presence of the taste). In contrast, the presence of the taste during conditioning itself overshadowed learning about the odor. We argue that the presence of the salient taste in compound with the odor enhances the rate of associative learning, producing a rapid loss in the associability of the odor. This loss of associability will generate both overshadowing and the potentiation of latent inhibition that is observed after pre-exposure to the compound. We tested 6 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), 3 orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), 4 bonobos (Pan paniscus), and 2 gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) in the reversed reward contingency task. Individuals were presented with pairs of quantities ranging between 0 and 6 food items. Prior to testing, some experienced apes had solved this task using 2 quantities while others were totally naive. Experienced apes transferred their ability to multiple-novel pairs after 6 to 19 months had elapsed since their initial testing. Two out of 6 naive apes (1 chimpanzee. 1 bonobo) solved the task--a proportion comparable to that of a previous study using 2 pairs of quantities. Their acquisition speed was also comparable to the successful subjects from that study. The ratio between quantities explained a large portion of the variance but affected naive and experienced individuals differently. For smaller ratios, naive individuals were well below 50% correct and experienced ones were well above 50%, yet both groups tended to converge toward 50% for larger ratios. Thus, some apes require no procedural modifications to overcome their strong bias for selecting the larger of 2 quantities. Three experiments examined inhibitory learning in rats, using Pavlovian and differential inhibitory eyeblink conditioning procedures. Experiment 1 was designed to compare summation and retardation effects following Pavlovian conditioned inhibition (A+/XA-) or differential inhibition (A+/X-) training using auditory and visual conditioned stimuli (CSs). After ten 100-trial sessions of training, both Pavlovian conditioned inhibition and differential inhibition produced a retardation effect. However, a summation effect was obtained only for rats given Pavlovian conditioned inhibition training. Experiment 2 showed that increasing differential inhibition training to twenty 100-trial sessions produced summation and retardation effects. In Experiment 3, rats were trained with either ten or twenty 100-trial sessions of intramodal inhibitory training with two tone CSs (2 kHz vs. 8 kHz). Summation and retardation effects were obtained after only 20 sessions of differential conditioning. The findings indicate that extensive training is needed to establish conditioned inhibition with intermodal or intramodal differential conditioning.

In three experiments, we examined the effect on the patterns of responding noted on fixed interval (FI) schedules of prior exposure to a range of interval and ratio schedules. Rats leverpressed for food reinforcement on random ratio (RR), random interval (RI), or variable interval (VI) schedules prior to transfer to FI schedules. In Experiment 1, prior exposure to an RR schedule retarded the development of typical FI patterns of responding. Exposure to a yoked RI schedule produced even greater retardation of typical FI performance. This effect was replicated in Experiment 2, using a within-subjects design. Rats responded on a multiple RR-RI schedule prior to a multiple FI-FI schedule. Typical FI performance emerged more slowly in the component previously associated with the RI than with that associated with the RR. In Experiment 3, exposure to an RR schedule retarded the development of FI performance to a greater extent than did exposure to a VR schedule. The latter schedule was programmed to allow the possibility that inhibitory control would develop after reinforcement. These results confirm that ratio schedules independently result in the disruption of FI responding. This effect was not long lasting and cannot be used plausibly to explain species differences in responding to FI schedules. However, it does suggest that temporal control--as manifested by the transfer of inhibitory control from one schedule to another---could facilitate movement between interval schedules.
