Fibroelastolytic papulosis (FEP) is an acquired cutaneous disorder of elastin that encompasses both white fibrous papulosis of the neck (WFPN) and pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE)-like papillary dermal elastolysis (PDE). Although FEP is a benign acquired disorder, it shares overlapping clinical features with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), a genetic disorder with systemic manifestations. We report two cases of FEP, including the WFPN and PXE-like PDE variants, in elderly women. In one case, a woman in her 70s with hyperlipidemia and chronic kidney disease presented with white-to-yellow, smooth, monomorphic papules coalescing into plaques on the posterior neck and bilateral antecubital fossa. A punch biopsy and elastic stain revealed a loss of elastic fibers in the papillary dermis. Based on these findings, we diagnosed our patient with PXE-like PDE. In another case, a woman in her 60s with no significant medical history similarly presented with skin-colored, smooth monomorphic papules on the posterior and anterior neck. A punch biopsy was also performed and an elastic stain showed a loss of elastic fibers in the papillary dermis, confirming the diagnosis of WFPN. Although rare, FEP is an important entity for dermatologists to recognize and differentiate from PXE given the potential for systemic complications in PXE.

Pavement skid resistance plays a crucial role in ensuring road safety and avoiding accidents. In the past, the laboratory evaluation of the skid resistance was carried out by studying only the coarse aggregates of the wearing course. To overcome this drawback, the Wehner-Schulze (WS) machine was developed in Germany in the 1960s. This equipment, composed of a polishing unit and a measuring unit, has great potential in predicting pavement skid resistance and its evolution over time, but is still little known in the pavement community (especially outside Europe). For these reasons, there is a need of a comprehensive review of the existing technical-scientific literature concerning the use of the WS machine. Specifically, this paper focuses on the main factors affecting the skid resistance in WS tests, the correlation of WS data with other laboratory test methods and with field skid resistance/polishing, and the available prediction models that have been validated through WS measurements. The critical analysis of the existing literature highlights that it is possible to correlate WS data with typical skid resistance field measurements as well as WS polishing with traffic polishing, but further efforts are needed in this regard. Future work should focus especially on open-graded mixtures and innovative asphalt mixtures (e.g., containing recycled materials and additives). From the perspective of pavement management, based on a theoretical background, the WS test results could be used as starting point for simplified prediction models of the in-situ skid resistance.

Abstract Background The contemporary management of mass casualty incidents (MCIs) relies on the effective application of predetermined, dedicated response plans based on current best evidence. Currently, there is limited evidence regarding the factors influencing the accuracy of first responders (FRs) in applying the START protocol and the associated prehospital times during the response to MCIs. The objective of this study was to investigate factors affecting FRs’ accuracy in performing prehospital triage in a series of simulated mass casualty exercises. Secondly, we assessed factors affecting triage-to-scene exit time in the same series of exercises. Methods This retrospective study focused on simulated casualties in a series of simulated MCIs Full Scale Exercises. START triage was the triage method of choice. For each Full-Scale Exercise (FSEx), collected data included exercise and casualty-related information, simulated casualty vital parameters, simulated casualty anatomic lesions, scenario management times, and responder experience. Results Among the 1090 casualties included in the primary analysis, 912 (83.6%) were correctly triaged, 137 (12.6%) were overtriaged, and 41 (3.7%) were undertriaged. Abstract Background: Some experts have made suggestions on how to use simulation during the pandemic, and simulation activities were carried out observing COVID-19 restrictions to improve technical and non-technical skills in health professionals. A number of papers have been published detailing the use of simulation during this period, but it is not clear for this reason, through a retrospective literature review, we analyzed studies published during the pandemic period to assess how simulation was used during this historical period. Methods: Retrospective literature review. Results: The search generated 11,375 records. After removing duplicates, 5431 studies were screened. Of the 643 eligible full-texts, 221 were excluded. A total of 422 articles met the inclusion criteria. Half of the 422 included studies were carried out specifically for COVID-19 (211), while 152 (36%) were performed during the pandemic but for other reasons. Analysis showed that simulation was used during the pandemic, with clear educational and research objectives. Most of the included studies dealt with COVID-19, focusing on high-acuity and critical scenarios but also including technical and non-technical skills. Conclusion: The experience gained with both “COVID-related” and “During COVID” studies could be applied to other settings in case of urgent training needed in case of disasters and to tailor simulation courses to retain technical skills.

Las noticias periodísticas ofrecen una visión particular del mundo a partir de estrategias discursivas que buscan plasmar sentidos específicos afines a los objetivos que persiguen. Así, lejos de las posiciones objetivistas, en este trabajo se subraya el rol de los/as periodistas como actores políticos (Borrat, 1999) que interpretan, recortan y enfatizan ciertos aspectos de una realidad percibida al momento de darla a conocer a sus audiencias (Entman, 2003). En esa línea, el objetivo es presentar una matriz para el análisis de los encuadres noticiosos sobre femicidios a partir de una triangulación teórico-metodológica que se considera innovadora para analizar las prácticas periodísticas específicas que refuerzan las visiones patriarcales en las noticias sobre esa problemática social. Además del desarrollo y de la fundamentación de las decisiones metodológicas, el instrumento se pone a prueba en el análisis de las 66 noticias sobre femicidios publicadas por dos medios de comunicación tradicionales en línea de Argentina, Clarín y Diario de Cuyo, durante 2019. Entre los resultados se destaca que los encuadres noticiosos sobre femicidios dan cuenta de las decisiones periodísticas que contribuyen a perpetuar el fenómeno estructural de las violencias de género y a reforzar el orden patriarcal, en lugar de interpelar a las audiencias y favorecer la acción disruptiva. Se advierte asimismo que las miradas que se ofrecen sobre las violencias contra las mujeres son superficiales y, por ende, las propuestas de solución resultan eminentemente vacías de sentido.

Abstract Simulation plays a pivotal role in addressing universal healthcare challenges, reducing education inequities, and improving mortality, morbidity and patient experiences. It enhances healthcare processes and systems, contributing significantly to the development of a safety culture within organizations. It has proven to be cost-effective and successful in enhancing team performance, fostering workforce resilience and improving patient outcomes. Through an international collaborative effort, an iterative consultation process was conducted with 50 societies operating across 67 countries within six continents. This process revealed common healthcare challenges and simulation practices worldwide. The intended audience for this statement includes policymakers, healthcare organization leaders, health education institutions, and simulation practitioners. It aims to establish a consensus on the key priorities for the broad adoption of exemplary simulation practice that benefits patients and healthcare workforces globally. Key recommendations Advocating for the benefits that simulation provides to patients, staff and organizations is crucial, as well as promoting its adoption and integration into daily learning and practice throughout the healthcare spectrum. Low-cost, high-impact simulation methods should be leveraged to expand global accessibility and integrate into system improvement processes as well as undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. Support at institutional and governmental level is essential, necessitating a unified and concerted approach in terms of political, strategic and financial commitment. It is imperative that simulation is used appropriately, employing evidence-based quality assurance approaches that adhere to recognized standards of best practice. These standards include faculty development, evaluation, accrediting, credentialing, and certification. We must endeavor to provide equitable and sustainable access to high-quality, contextually relevant simulation-based learning opportunities, firmly upholding the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion. This should be complemented with a renewed emphasis on research and scholarship in this field. Call for action We urge policymakers and leaders to formally acknowledge and embrace the benefits of simulation in healthcare practice and education. This includes a commitment to sustained support and a mandate for the application of simulation within education, training, and clinical environments. We advocate for healthcare systems and education institutions to commit themselves to the goal of high-quality healthcare and improved patient outcomes. This commitment should encompass the promotion and resource support of simulation-based learning opportunities for individuals and interprofessional teams throughout all stages and levels of a caregiver’s career, in alignment with best practice standards. We call upon simulation practitioners to champion healthcare simulation as an indispensable learning tool, adhere to best practice standards, maintain a commitment to lifelong learning, and persist in their fervent advocacy for patient safety. This statement, the result of an international collaborative effort, aims to establish a consensus on the key priorities for the broad adoption of exemplary simulation practice that benefits patients and healthcare workforces globally.

The study explores how different dimensions of perfectionism influence psychological well-being (PWB) in emerging adults. Literature has deepened the relationships between maladaptive perfectionism (e.g., excessive self-criticism, perceived discrepancy from the standards) and low PWB. Less is known about whether and how adaptive perfectionism (e.g., pursuing personal standards) relates to PWB. Secondly, the study has investigated whether self-compassion (i.e., self-benevolence, seeing personal imperfections as a common condition) may mediate the relationships between adaptive/maladaptive perfectionism and PWB. Participants (N = 217, 18–35 y. o.) completed self-report questionnaires measuring: adaptive/maladaptive perfectionism (Almost Perfect Scale-Revised, APS-R: high standards and order/discrepancy, respectively), PWB, and self-compassion (SCS). Adaptive perfectionism was associated with PWB, particularly a higher presence of purpose in life, environmental mastery, self-acceptance, and personal growth. Conversely, discrepancy resulted in the most robust predictor of low PWB (β = −0.68), followed by high standards with a positive direction (β = 0.23; Rc2 = 0.514, p < 0.001). A strong negative association emerged between discrepancy and SCS (r = −0.67, p < 0.001). A mediation analysis shows that self-compassion has an indirect effect, reducing the strength of the relationship between discrepancy and low PWB. Results suggest focusing on self-compassion as a buffer factor that reduces the negative impact of maladaptive perfectionism on psychological well-being. Implications for education and health psychology are discussed.

In this paper, we describe the geohazard-related elements of the Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea continental margin, situated between the 40° and 41° North latitude. These features were recognised principally through morphological analysis. The investigation utilized medium – and high-resolution digital models of the submarine landscape, produced within the framework of the Magic project (Marine Geohazard along Italian Coasts), and primarily focusing on the bathymetric range of 50–700 meters. The surveyed area encompasses a recently formed continental margin, which connects the internal segments of the Apennine fold-and-thrust belt, verging NE, to the Tyrrhenian Sea bathyal plain, a 3000-m-deep back-arc basin that has developed since the Middle-Late Miocene. Several classes of hazard-related elements have been identified offshore, primarily associated with high-gradient slopes and a large number of volcanic edifices and banks. These include canyon systems, erosive scarps, landslide complexes, fault – and volcanic-related features, such as the products of the volcanic edifices instability, which claim to varying degrees of geo-hazard. Additionally, bedforms, fluid seepages and creeping phenomena in the prodelta slopes suggest high morpho-tectonic and environmental dynamics.HighlightsThis article reports on the thematic maps developed along the Lazio – Campania offshore (Central-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) within the framework of the Magic Project, based on geomorphological analysis of the HR Digital Elevation Model of the seafloor.Several classes of hazard-related elements have been identified offshore, mainly associated with high-gradient slopes, volcanic activity and intense morphodynamic processes.The entire suite of maps created in the context of the Magic Project serves as a valuable base of knowledge, extending to the national scale and benchmarks for future monitoring of critical sites and geo-hazard-related features, as well as for maritime spatial planning actions.

ABSTRACTThe MaGIC project (Marine Geohazard along the Italian Coasts) had the aim of mapping the geohazard in the Italian seas and resulted in the production of numerous maps covering parts of the Italian Seas. In this paper, we present the maps: ‘The submerged portions of the Aeolian volcanic islands and the north-eastern Sicilian margin’, located in the south-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea. Both areas are affected by active geological processes, which represent important geohazards elements. Inthe submarine parts of the Stromboli volcanoremobilization of volcaniclastic deposits occur along the Sciara del Fuoco, where small-scale instabilities may represent a source of geohazard. Hydrothermal activity occurs on Enarete and Enaretino conical seamounts. The north-eastern Sicilian margin has a narrow continental shelf. Numerous canyon heads indent the shelf and, sometimes, reach close to the coast. Canyons have often a retrogradational trend and further eventual landward shift through sliding can iendangeri coastal or offshore infrastructures. Many of the canyons connect with leveed channels with widespread sediment instability. In the Gioia Basin, some of the channels connect to form the Stromboli slope Valley. Volcanic unrest or local and regional earthquakes are proven to have caused submarine landslides and tsunamis.

ABSTRACTWe present maps of geohazard features identified across north-western Sicily and Pantelleria in the framework of the Magic project (MArine Geohazard along Italian Coasts), which involved Italian marine geological researchers in 2007-2013. These seafloor features were recognized using high-resolution bathymetry data and rely on the morphological expression of the seafloor and shallow sub-surface processes. The north-western Sicily is a complex continental margin, affected by morphodynamic, depositional, and tectonic processes. The Egadi offshore is controlled by fault escarpments and alternating retreating and progradational processes. Ustica and Pantelleria submerged edifices show the effect of volcanic activity. The Ustica seafloor is interested in volcanic, tectonic, and gravitational instability processes, while the Pantelleria offshore underwent erosive-depositional processes and the effect of bottom currents. Two levels of interpretation are represented: the physiographic domain at a scale of 1:250.000 and the morphological units and morpho-bathymetric elements at a 1:100.000 scale.

Apresentamos o ensaio fotográfico artesanal, constituído a partir de uma etnografia com crianças, realizada na Escola Comunitária de Educação Infantil, localizada dentro do Aterro Sanitário Municipal, representado emicamente como Lixão, no Litoral Norte Gaúcho, Brasil. Como objetivo, buscamos compreender como as crianças, a partir de suas produções fotográficas, leem e comunicam o contexto em que estão inseridas. Os estranhamentos reverberaram da costura artesanal apreendidas na pluralidade dos olhares e lentes das crianças em diálogo com as singularidades do contexto – da escola e do lixão, de modo indissociável – revelando subjetividades dos interlocutores entre comunidades: estudantil (crianças) e de trabalhadores(as) do Aterro Sanitário Municipal. A partir da experiência retratada, dialogamos com a provocação de Garcés (2022) e demonstramos que as crianças produzem imagens que denotam curiosidade, criatividade, imaginação, sensibilidade e investigação. Suas fotografias apresentam uma leitura de mundo aberta à novidade, em que criam novos e diferentes sentidos.
