15. First record of patchy coral reef off Terekhol, North Goa, India.

Abstract

This study reports the first time record of the patchy coral reef (~ 2 km²) of Terekhol in North Goa, the western coast of India during January - February 2020. There were more than 07 genera/species of hard corals in the reef and is dominated by a reef building Turbinaria mesenterina (Dendrophylliidae), which is considered as a sediment tolerant coral species. A total of 25 fish species were counted and the major species recorded were Chromis viridis, Chromis sp., Dascyllus sp., Abudefduf saxatilis, Abudefduf bengalensis, Acanthurus blochii, Acanthurus nigroris, Acanthurus sp., and Odonus niger that contributed 80 % of the total fish community. The documentation and record of the reef area could give identity to the ecosystem in the spatial platform and the conservation efforts can be planned for the reef by limiting the anthropogenic activities in and around the ecosystem. Abstract

Diverse biological communities mediate the transformation, transport, and storage of elements fundamental to life on Earth, including carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. However, global biogeochemical model outcomes can vary by orders of magnitude, compromising capacity to project realistic ecosystem responses to planetary changes, including ocean productivity and climate. Here, we compare global carbon turnover rates estimated using models grounded in biological versus geochemical theory and argue that the turnover estimates based on each perspective yield divergent outcomes. Importantly, empirical studies that include sedimentary biological activity vary less than those that ignore it. Improving the relevance of model projections and reducing uncertainty associated with the anticipated consequences of global change requires reconciliation of these perspectives, enabling better societal decisions on mitigation and adaptation.

Abstract

Commercial-scale mining for polymetallic nodules could have a major impact on the deepseaenvironment, but the effects of these mining activities on deep-sea ecosystems are verypoorly known. The first commercial test mining for polymetallic nodules was carried out in1970. Since then a number of small-scale commercial test mining or scientific disturbancestudies have been carried out. Here we evaluate changes in faunal densities and diversity ofbenthic communities measured in response to these 11 simulated or test nodule mining disturbancesusing meta-analysis techniques. We find that impacts are often severe immediatelyafter mining, with major negative changes in density and diversity of most groupsoccurring. However, in some cases, the mobile fauna and small-sized fauna experiencedless negative impacts over the longer term. At seven sites in the Pacific, multiple surveysassessed recovery in fauna over periods of up to 26 years. Almost all studies show somerecovery in faunal density and diversity for meiofauna and mobile megafauna, often withinone year. However, very few faunal groups return to baseline or control conditions after twodecades. The effects of polymetallic nodule mining are likely to be long term. Our analysesshow considerable negative biological effects of seafloor nodule mining, even at the smallscale of test mining experiments, although there is variation in sensitivity amongst organismsof different sizes and functional groups, which have important implications for ecosystemresponses. Unfortunately, many past studies have limitations that reduce their effectiveness in determining responses. We provide recommendations to improve futuremining impact test studies. Further research to assess the effects of test-mining activitieswill inform ways to improve mining practices and guide effective environmental managementof mining activities.

29. Comparison of tropical nematode communities from three harbours, west coast of India

Abstract

The three major harbours from the central west coast of India were investigated for their benthic environmental status using nematodes as surrogate community. As these three harbours have shown deteriorated conditions revealed from macrobenthic community, our main objective was to investigate and inter-compare the nematode communities within these harbours and with other similar habitats worldwide. A total of 50 nematode species was encountered in the study area, wherein highest (34 species) were recorded at Mormugao harbour and lowest (23 species) at Ratnagiri harbour. The presence of dominant species like Vasostoma sp. (41%), Sabatieria sp.1 (23%) and Sabatieria sp.2. (20%) designate these harbours as altered benthic habitats under stress. The diversity indices demonstrate Ratnagiri harbour as the most stressed and Karwar being the least stressed comparatively. Intense anthropogenic activities, input of many pollutants such as heavy metals, pesticides, petroleum derivatives, TBT's and dredging activity in the harbours can be held responsible for the altered nematode community.

Abstract

Benzo(k)fluoranthene [B(k)F] is one of the widespread priority pollutants of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that has been scarcely studied for exposure assessment. With studies reporting a high amount B(k)F in sediments and water samples around the world, it has become vital to study its effects on aquatic organisms. In this connection, this study is conducted to study the effect of different concentrations of B(k)F (1, 10, 25 and 50 µg/L) in marine gastropodMorula granulataexposedin vivofor 96 h. A concentration-dependent increase in percentage tail DNA (TDNA) as measured by comet assay was observed in snails exposed to B(k)F. Exposure concentrations above 1 µg/L B(k)F showed significant increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and lipid peroxidation value in snails. After 96 h, SOD activity was found to be doubled for 50 µg/L B(k)F in comparison to control. A significant increase in catalase and glutathione S-transferase activity was observed at all exposure conditions at the end of the exposure time. Our study showed that B(k)F induces oxidative stress in snails which further lead to genotoxic damage. To our knowledge, this is the first study on oxidative stress and genotoxic damage in gastropods exposed to B(k)F. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ecological risk assessment using multiple biomarkers produce a large amount of data that is hard to interpret and the result are often contradictory. In this context, Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) index was used to integrate the biomarkers effects to assess the impact of environmental contaminants in marine gastropod Nerita chamaeleon from Goa, India. Genotoxic (DNA damage as measured by comet assay and alkaline unwinding assay) and biochemical [superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione S-transferase, lipid peroxidation and acetylcholinesterase] biomarkers were measured in snails collected from different sites (Arambol, Anjuna, Sinquerim, Dona Paula, Velsao, Betul and Palolem). Total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in snail tissue were in the range from 5.29 - 12.14 µg/g wet weight. Standardized values of biomarker response were visualized using star plots, which show unique patterns for different biomarkers. The mean IBR value was found to be highest at Dona Paula (8.07 ± 0.91) followed by Sinquerim (6.95 ± 0.91), Velsao (4.48 ± 0.68), Anjuna (3.28 ± 1.05), Palolem (2.53 ± 0.73), Arambol (1.81 ± 0.21) and Betul (0.88 ± 0.77). Additionally, the IBR values were found to be positively correlated with PAH concentration in snail tissues. These results suggest that integration of biomarkers effects using IBR along with chemical analysis can be a useful tool for the assessment of environmental pollution and to identify spatial patterns of contamination in the aquatic ecosystem. Abstract

Antioxidant defense plays a crucial role in the response of an organism to pollutants. Several processes stimulate the production of free radicals or deplete the antioxidant defense, which if not regulated properly, may cause oxidative stress in the organisms, leading to damage in DNA, proteins or lipids. Free radicals are also beneficial as it plays an important role in defense against infectious agents, and signal transduction. Hence a delicate balance between antioxidants and free radicals is required. Oxidative stress biomarkers are very useful in disease etiology and environmental toxicological studies. The increase in anthropogenic activities and environmental awareness has resulted in an explosive increase of research in the field of oxidative stress. Snails are excellent organisms for environmental biomonitoring and contribute a major proportion of the invertebrate biomass. In our article, we have summarized the research carried out using glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and lipid peroxidation (LPO) in snails exposed to various toxicants and their implication in the environmental monitoring programs.
