2. The slow viscous flow around doubly-periodic arrays of infinite slender cylinders

Abstract

The slow viscous flow through a doubly-periodic array of cylinders does not have an analytical solution. However, as a reduced model for the flow within fibrous porous media, this solution is important for many real-world systems. We asymptotically determine the flow around a doubly-periodic array of infinite slender cylinders, by placing doubly-periodic two-dimensional singularity solutions within the cylinder and expanding the no-slip condition on the cylinder's surface in powers of the cylinder radius. The asymptotic solution provides a closed-form estimate for the flow and forces as a function of the radius and the dimensions of the cell. The force is compared to results from lattice-Boltzmann simulations of low-Reynolds-number flows in the same geometry, and the accuracy of the no-slip condition on the surface of the cylinder, predicted by the asymptotic theory, is checked. Finally, the behaviour of the flow, flux, force and effective permeability of the cell is investigated as a function of the geometric parameters. The structure of the asymptotic permeability is consistent with other models for the flow parallel to an array of rods. These models could be used to help understand the flows within porous systems composed of fibres and systems involving periodic arrays such as deterministic lateral displacement.

Abstract

Animal communication has long been thought to be subject to pressures and constraints associated with social relationships. However, our understanding of how the nature and quality of social relationships relates to the use and evolution of communication is limited by a lack of directly comparable methods across multiple levels of analysis. Here, we analysed observational data from 111 wild groups belonging to 26 non-human primate species, to test how vocal communication relates to dominance style (the strictness with which a dominance hierarchy is enforced, ranging from 'despotic' to 'tolerant'). At the individual-level, we found that dominant individuals who were more tolerant vocalized at a higher rate than their despotic counterparts. This indicates that tolerance within a relationship may place pressure on the dominant partner to communicate more during social interactions. At the species-level, however, despotic species exhibited a larger repertoire of hierarchy-related vocalizations than their tolerant counterparts. Findings suggest primate signals are used and evolve in tandem with the nature of interactions that characterize individuals' social relationships.

Abstract

This review describes mechanisms for pulling fluids through microfluidic devices using hydrophilic structures at the downstream end of the device. These pumps enable microfluidic devices to get out of the lab and become point-of-care devices that can be used without external pumps. We briefly summarize prior related reviews on capillary, pumpless, and passively driven microfluidics then provide insights into the fundamental physics of wicking pumps. No prior reviews have focused on wicking pumps for microfluidics. Recent progress is divided into four categories: porous material pumps, hydrogel pumps, and 2.5D- and 3D-microfabricated pumps. We conclude with a discussion of challenges and opportunities in the field, which include achieving constant flow rate, priming issues, and integration of pumps with devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. Anisotropic permeability in deterministic lateral displacement arrays

Abstract

We uncover anisotropic permeability in microfluidic deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) arrays. A DLD array can achieve high-resolution bimodal size-based separation of microparticles, including bioparticles, such as cells. For an application with a given separation size, correct device operation requires that the flow remains at a fixed angle to the obstacle array. We demonstrate via experiments and lattice-Boltzmann simulations that subtle array design features cause anisotropic permeability. Anisotropic permeability indicates the microfluidic array's intrinsic tendency to induce an undesired lateral pressure gradient. This can cause an inclined flow and therefore local changes in the critical separation size. Thus, particle trajectories can become unpredictable and the device useless for the desired separation task. Anisotropy becomes severe for arrays with unequal axial and lateral gaps between obstacle posts and highly asymmetric post shapes. Furthermore, of the two equivalent array layouts employed with the DLD, the rotated-square layout does not display intrinsic anisotropy. We therefore recommend this layout over the easier-to-implement parallelogram layout. 22. Better late than modern? Between 'late capitalism' and 'late modernity'.

Abstract

Two different ways of naming and narrating historical periods, including the present time, involve using the terms 'capitalism' and 'modernity'. Each terminological set opens certain intellectual vistas, while foreclosing others. This article argues that while 'late capitalism' is, despite its many problems, a meaningful concept to use today, 'late modernity' is not. Offering a genealogy of each term, the article considers how ascriptions of lateness to modernity result in some absurdity, while ascribing lateness to capitalism does not involve such marked risks. Nonetheless, more comprehensive and all-encompassing definitions of capitalism may be incompatible with ascriptions of lateness to capitalism. These various issues are considered in light of the need to name the current world-condition in a period of accelerating environmental crisis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

23. Pre-modern glocalization and ancient texts in the online 21st century: explorations in and between translations, communications, and inter-civilizational encounters.

Abstract

Examining some very old things using social-theoretical thinking can shed new light on some very recent ones. This paper argues that the movement into and through digital environs of ancient texts of religious, spiritual, and other forms of significance in recent years is just the latest iteration of very long-term glocalizing processes. These involve specific types of intricate and crisscrossing intra-and inter-civilizational modes of communication and mediation, namely translation practices. The paper sets out an account of inter-civilizational encounters in history, focusing on how texts often taken by many people today as direct expressions of the divine are in fact the results of the activities of those glocalizing actors known as translators. Studies of 21st century digital glocalization, virtual religion, and related areas will benefit from further considering textual translation practices, as these are embedded within the long-term history of contacts between civilizational constellations. The historical unfoldings of ancient texts, when these have been subjected to glocalizing inter-civilizational processes, are more akin to online forms of communication than one might think. Thinking through such matters generates more capacious accounts of historical and contemporary glocalization and the glocality of civilizations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Many sociologists drink wine, but hardly any write about it professionally, and the putative scholarly field of the 'sociology of wine' remains inchoate, the study of wine mostly being ceded to other disciplines. This is strange, as wine is crucial to a host of phenomena, such as national and regional identities in winemaking countries, as well as identity construction and class-based distinction dynamics in many other locations. Wine has received relatively little attention from Bourdieu or those inspired by him. Indeed, some of the most influential writings on wine in a sociological register today are sometimes explicitly hostile to his sociology. Yet for all types of activities traversing the overlapping domains of the production, social distribution and consumption of wine, Bourdieusian elements must be brought into the analysis to be able to appreciate interlocking issues of class, ethnicity and gender relations and inequalities, particularly within imperial/colonial and post-imperial/post-colonial social contexts. In its 8000-year history, very major factors in the social structuring of wine have been imperial power and colonial expansion, factors bound up with ethnic and gender inequalities in wine phenomena both historically and today. A flexible and open-minded version of Bourdieu, as advocated by Bridget Fowler, draws attention to ongoing dynamics of power and resistance in wine worlds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mounting evidence suggests that cell populations are extremely heterogeneous, with individual cells fulfilling different roles within the population. Flow cytometry (FC) is a high‐throughput tool for single‐cell analysis that works at high optical resolution. Sub‐populations with unique properties can be screened, isolated and sorted through fluorescence‐activated cell sorting (FACS), using intracellular fluorescent products or surface‐tagged fluorescent products of interest. However, traditional FC and FACS methods cannot identify or isolate cells that secrete extracellular products of interest. Double emulsion (DE) droplets are an innovative approach to retaining these extracellular products so cells producing them can be identified and isolated with FC and FACS. The water‐in‐oil‐in‐water structure makes DE droplets compatible with the sheath flow of flow cytometry. Single cells can be encapsulated with other reagents into DEs, which act as pico‐reactors. These droplets allow biological activities to take place while allowing for cell cultivation monitoring, rare mutant identification, and cellular events characterization. However, using DEs in FACS presents technical challenges, including rupture of DEs, poor accuracy and low sorting efficiency. This study presents high‐performance sorting using fluorescent beads (as simulants for cells). This study aims to guide researchers in the use of DE‐based flow cytometry, offering insights into how to resolve the technical difficulties associated with DE‐based screening and sorting using FC.
