Abstract

The level densities and gamma-ray strength functions of 205-208Pb have been measured with the Oslo method, utilizing the (3He, 3He' gamma) and (3He,alpha gamma) reactions on the target nuclei 206Pb and 208Pb. The extracted level densities are consistent with known discrete levels at low excitation energies. The entropies and temperatures in the micro-canonical ensemble have been deduced from the experimental level density. An average entropy difference of Delta S ~ 1.8 k_B has been observed between 205Pb and 206Pb. The gamma-ray strength functions in 205-208Pb are extracted and compared with two models; however, none of them describe the data adequately. Intermediate structures have been observed at lower gamma-ray energies in all the analyzed Pb nuclei. These structures are less pronounced while moving from the doubly-magic nucleus 208Pb to 205Pb.

Abstract

The scandium isotopes 44,45Sc have been studied with the 45Sc(3He,alpha gamma)44Sc and 45Sc(3He,3He' gamma)45Sc reactions, respectively. The nuclear level densities and gamma-ray strength functions have been extracted using the Oslo method. The experimental level densities are compared to calculated level densities obtained from a microscopic model based on BCS quasiparticles within the Nilsson level scheme. This model also gives information about the parity distribution and the number of broken Cooper pairs as a function of excitation energy. The experimental gamma-ray strength functions are compared to theoretical models of the E1, M1, and E2 strength, and to data from (gamma,n) and (gamma,p) experiments. The strength functions show an enhancement at low gamma energies that cannot be explained by the present, standard models., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures. Published version

Abstract

The RSFs are U-shaped as function of gamma energy with a minimum at around E_gamma=3 MeV. The minimum values increase with neutron number due to the increase in the low-energy tail of the giant electric dipole resonance with nuclear deformation. The unexpected strong increase in strength below E_gamma=3 MeV, here called soft pole, is established for all 93-98Mo isotopes. Abstract

The level density at low spin in the 161,162-Dy and 171,172-Yb nuclei has been extracted from primary gamma rays. The nuclear heat capacity is deduced within the framework of the canonical ensemble. The heat capacity exhibits an S-formed shape as a function of temperature, which is interpreted as a fingerprint of the phase transition from a strongly correlated to an uncorrelated phase. The density of accessible levels in the ($^3$He,$\alpha \gamma$) reaction has been extracted for the $^{162}$Dy, $^{166}$Er and $^{172}$Yb nuclei. The nuclear temperature is measured as a function of excitation energy in the region of 0 -- 6 MeV. The temperature curves reveal structures indicating new degrees of freedom. Abstract

The study of damping of rotational motion applying the rotational plane mapping (RPM) method is presented and discussed. The aim of this technique is to extract the distribution of the rotational transition strength from an analysis of the shape of the ''central valley'' of two- and three-dimensional gamma-ray spectra. The method is applied to a triple gamma-coincidence data set of Tm-162,Tm-163 nuclei formed in Cl-37+Te-130 reactions. The rotational transition strength is obtained as a function of rotational frequency for selected regions of entry states, and the width is found to be rather constant and approximately equal to 80 keV. This value is significantly smaller than the value predicted theoretically for the rotational damping width Gamma(rct). Also the ratio between the observed depth and width of both the 2D and 3D valleys does not agree with the simple model adopted in the RPM method, These discrepancies point to the presence of both a wide and a narrow component in the distribution of rotational strength as extracted by the RPM method. The analysis of simulated spectra obtained on the basis of realistic band-mixing calculations, including residual interactions, confirms this behaviour.

At high spins, a bandcrossing occurs which is interpreted as a change in shape to a prolate deformation, Band-mixing calculations are performed for Ir171-175. These show that shape-coexistence between triaxial and prolate states in these nuclei follows the same systematics found in their Pt and Os neighbours. The systematics are also compared with deformations calculated for Ir171-179 using the code "Ultimate Cranker". Abstract

The nuclear level densities of 44,45Sc and 50,51V have been measured using the Oslo method. From the level density thermal properties such as entropy and temperature are deduced. Also the radiative strength functions (RSF) of 50,51V have been extracted. The gross properties of the RSF are generally described by the low-energetic tail of the giant electric dipole resonance (GEDR). Abstract

The level density and the γ-strength function have been extracted experimentally. From the level densities thermodynamical quantities such as temperature and heat capacity can be found. Structures in the micro-canonical temperature are interpreted as the onset of new degrees of freedom by the breaking of Cooper pairs. The S-shape in the heat capacity curves, found within the canonical ensemble, indicates the pairing-phase transition, and a critical temperature for the quenching of pair correlations is found. The pygmy resonance at 3.3(1) MeV in 172Yb has now been established with a strength of B(M1)=6.5(15)μN2 and M1 multipolarity, the so-called scissors mode. In addition, a strong unexpected enhancement of the radiative strength function (RSF) has been found at low γ-ray energy in medium light Fe nuclei and also in the heavier Mo nuclei. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A method has been developed where primary γ-rays after nuclear reactions with one ejectile only, can be projected out from the total γ-ray spectrum. These primary γ-ray spectra are shown to be, under certain conditions, a new source for determination of nuclear level densities and γ-ray strength functions. Results for [sup 162]Dy, [sup 166]Er and [sup 172]Yb are presented. The level density is used for determination of nuclear temperature and heat capacity. Fine structures in the level density and the temperature suggest changes in the pair correlation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
