Obtaining a dedicated infrared or ultraviolet forensic camera can prove to be a great problem for a researcher with limited funds. This paper illustrates how to modify a standard reflex digital camera to function like a forensic camera, using filters and light. This modified camera can be used to carry out detailed analysis of bones excavated on an archaeological dig using infrared and ultraviolet photography. This technique could be extended into other fields of study with little additional cost.

This paper is the second part of the work described in Part I. In Part I, starting from a conceptual design, a mechanical solution to manufacture an innovative electromagnetic linear actuator has been described. In this second part of the work the mechanical solution described in Part I is quantitatively justified by evaluating stresses and deformations in the structure during its functioning. The parts of the device that have been studied are the most critical since, in case of excessive deformation/stress, they can irreparably compromise the actuator operation. These parts are the pole piece-base set and the retention cages of the permanent magnets. The FEM analysis has allowed us to identify the most stressed areas of the previous elements whose shape has been appropriately designed so as to reduce the maximum stresses and deformations. Moreover, the FEM analysis helped to find the most convenient solution to join the pole pieces to the respective bases. At the end of the paper the prototype actuator manufactured and tested on the basis of the studies performed is briefly illustrated.

Research was carried out on a geoglyph located in Kanda (Macedonia) by an international team using interdisciplinary methods (astronomy, philosophy, mythology, mathematics and physics). The research conducted on two occasions in 2014 was undertaken to establish all potential anomalies in the IS, US and EM spectrum with special attention to anomalies common to sacred sites, but as yet unexplained by standard physics. We conclude the Geoglyph looks to be built on an artificial hill. This hill or mound also appears to be artificial from the aeroplane. The Geoglyph is visible only from the sky and is located in an oval ditch. Some measurements suggest that there is chamber located below the surface. Research by different methods (infra-/ultrasound research, AMT measurements, binary algorithm synthesis from audio waves, data sonification and dowsing) also found that at the sacred enclosure primary water is located at the centre or at some point along its major axis. Furthermore, since the soil does not match the surrounding area, it would certainly appear that this mound has been carefully constructed with a specific purpose in mind. What exactly that purpose is remains to be investigated in future.

This first part of the work describes an engineering solution to manufacture an electromagnetic linear actuator for moving rudders and fin stabilizers of military ships. The solution defines the transition from the conceptual design of the device initially studied from an electromagnetic point of view to a mechanical configuration that really works. This configuration has a high level of mechanical reliability. The structural problems that have been resolved with the proposed configuration are described. In order to validate the design choices discussed in this first part, the second part of the work illustrates the results of the numerical simulations performed by the structural finite elements method.

Combined with research on the effect of acoustics on the human body, archaeoacoustics is an interesting method to reanalyse ancient sites. As well as broadening our understanding of the ancient world, this multidisciplinary approach seeks to recover “ancient knowledge” that affects the emotional sphere of human consciousness,. In this study, we have examined the relationship between the resonance effect present in Cividale del Friuli hypogeum and the altered state of consciousness of volunteers using TRV technology. The results showed that after eight minutes of exposure to resonance within one of the hypogeum chambers, both volunteers and the chamber itself become attuned to the same frequency. This represents an unexpected result. On the one hand it would appear the volunteers adapt themselves to the vibrations of the chamber, whilst the environment seemingly adapts itself to the state of mind of the subjects. It is almost as if some sort of bidirectional influence is at play.

Research into archaeoacoustics and physical phenomena in ancient sites is still very much at the developmental stage. Currently there is no practical standard to study this complementary discipline of archaeology. During the three years our group has been studying archaeoacoustics and natural phenomena, we have been able to explain some enigmas of ancient archaeological sites that were not possible to explain in other ways. Following our experience, we spent time in our laboratories developing an archaeoacoustic protocol that can be applied to the investigatation of any archaeological site. Indeed it is important to define a standard at international level so that other researchers can use the same methodology to repeat previous findings.
