Networks of today are going through a rapid evolution and there are many emerging areas of information networking and their applications. Heterogeneous networking supported by recent technological advances in low power wireless communications along with silicon integration of various functionalities such as sensing, communications, intelligence, and actuations are emerging as a critically important disruptive computer class based on a new platform, networking structure and interface that enable novel, low-cost and high-volume applications. Several of such applications have been difficult to realize because of many interconnection problems. To fulfill their large range of applications different kinds of networks need to collaborate and wired and next generation wireless systems should be integrated in order to develop high performance computing solutions to problems arising from the complexities of these networks. This book covers the theory, design and applications of computer networks, distributed computing, and information systems. The 2010 edition of the Passive and Active Measurement Conference was the 11th of a series of successful events. Since 2000, the Passive and Active M- surement (PAM) conference has provided a forum for presenting and discussing innovative and early work in the area of Internet measurements. PAM has a tradition of being a workshop-like conference with lively discussion and active participation from all attendees. This event focuses on research and practical applications of network measurement and analysis techniques. This year's c- ference was held at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. PAM 2010 attracted 79 submissions. This volume contains the set of revised selected papers presented at the 21st International Conference on Information Networking (ICOIN 2007), which was held in Estoril, Portugal, January 23–25, 2007. The conference series started under the name of Joint Workshop on Computer Communications, in 1986. At that time, it constituted a technical meeting for researchersand engineers on - ternet technologies in East Asian countries, where several technical networking issues were discussed. In 1993, the meeting was reorganized as an international conference known as ICOIN. Recent conferences were held in Sendai, Japan (2006),Jeju,Korea(2005),Pusan,Korea(2004),Jeju,Korea(2003),Jeju,Korea (2002), Beppu City, Japan (2001), Hsin-chu, Taiwan (2000), and Tokyo, Japan (1999). In 2007, for the?rst time since its creation, ICOIN took place outside Asia, and we were very pleased to host it in Portugal. ICOIN 2007 was or- nized by INESC-ID and IST/Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal) with the technical co-sponsorship of IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Portugal Section-Computer Society Chapter, in cooperation with the Order of Engineers CollegeofInformaticsEngineering(Portugal),IPSJ(InformationProcessing- ciety of Japan), KISS (Korea Information Science Society), and Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS), Springer, Germany. The papers presented in this volume were selected in two stages: 1) revi- ing and selection for the ICOIN program and 2) on-site presentation review by session chairs or by program committee chairs.

Welcome to the proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Network- Based Information Systems (NBiS-2007), in conjunction with the 18th Inter- tional Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications DEXA-2007, which was held in Regensburg, Germany, September 3–4, 2007. The main objective of NBiS-2007 was to bring together scientists, engineers, and researchers from both network systems and information systems with the aimofencouragingtheexchangeofideas,opinions,andexperiencebetweenthese two communities. NBiS started as a workshop and for 9 years it was held together with DEXA International Conference and is the oldest among DEXA Workshops. The wo- shop has been very successful in quantity and quality. We received many paper submissions every year, but as a workshop we could accept only a limited n- ber of papers. This was the?rst year that NBiS was run as an international conference together with DEXA. We received 122 research papers from all over the world. The submitted papers were carefully reviewed by at least two reviewers. Based on the review results, the Program Committee members selected 55 high-quality papers to be presented during the NBiS-2007 conference.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Passive and Active Measurement, PAM 2007, held in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, April 2007. Coverage focuses on research and practical applications of network measurement and analysis techniques, detailing interdomain routing, P2P, wireless 802.11, wireless 3G/CDMA/Bluetooth, infrastructure and services, traffic, and measurement principles.

Through examples of large complex graphs in realistic networks, research in graph theory has been forging ahead into exciting new directions. Graph theory has emerged as a primary tool for detecting numerous hidden structures in various information networks, including Internet graphs, social networks, biological networks, or, more generally, any graph representing relations in massive data sets. How will we explain from first principles the universal and ubiquitous coherence in the structure of these realistic but complex networks? In order to analyze these large sparse graphs, we use combinatorial, probabilistic, and spectral methods, as well as new and improved tools to analyze these networks. The examples of these networks have led us to focus on new, general, and powerful ways to look at graph theory. The book, based on lectures given at the CBMS Workshop on the Combinatorics of Large Sparse Graphs, presents new perspectives in graph theory and helps to contribute to a sound scientific foundation for our understanding of discrete networks that permeate this information age.

Progress in collaborative networks continues showing a growing number of manifestations and has led to the acceptance of Collaborative Networks (CN) as a new scientific discipline. Contributions to CN coming from multiple reference disciplines has been extensively investigated. In fact developments in CN have benefited from contributions of multiple areas, namely computer science, computer engineering, communications and networking, management, economy, social sciences, law and ethics, etc. Furthermore, some theories and paradigms defined elsewhere have been suggested by several research groups as promising tools to help define and characterize emerging collaborative organizational forms. Although still at the beginning of a long way to go, there is a growing awareness in the research and academic world, for the need to establish a stronger theoretical foundation for this new discipline and a number of recent works are contributing to this goal. From a utilitarian perspective, agility has been pointed out as one of the most appealing characteristics of collaborative networks to face the challenges of a fast changing socio-economic context. However, during the last years it became more evident that finding the right partners and establishing the necessary preconditions for starting an effective collaboration process are both costly and time consuming activities, and therefore an inhibitor of the aimed agility. Among others, obstacles include lack of information (e.g. non-availability of catalogs with normalized profiles of organizations) and lack of preparedness of organizations to join the collaborative process. Overcoming the mismatches resulting from the heterogeneity of potential partners (e.g. differences in infrastructures, corporate culture, methods of work, and business practices) requires considerable investment. Building trust, a pre-requisite for any effective collaboration, is not straight forwardand requires time. Therefore the effective creation of truly dynamic collaborative networks requires a proper context in which potential members are prepared to rapidly get engaged in collaborative processes. The concept of breeding environment has thus emerged as an important facilitator for wider dissemination of collaborative networks and their practical materialization. The PRO-VE'05 held in Valencia, Spain, continues the 6th event in a series of successful working conferences on virtual enterprises. This book includes selected papers from that conference and should become a valuable tool to all of those interested in the advances and challenges of collaborative networks.

Welcome to ICOIN 2005,the International Conference on Information Netwo- ing, held at Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel, Jeju Island, Korea during January 31– February2,2005.ICOIN2005followedthesuccessofpreviousconferences.Since 1986, the conference has provided a technical forum for various issues in inf- mation networking. The theme of each conference re?ects the historic events in the computer communication industry. (Please refer to www.icoin2005.or.kr for details.) The theme of ICOIN 2004, “Convergence in Broadband and Mobile Networking,” was used again for ICOIN 2005 since we believed it was ongoing. This year we received 427 submissions in total, which came from 22 co- tries. Upon submission, authors were asked to select one of the categories listed in the Call for Papers. The most popular category chosen was network se- rity, followed by mobile networks and wireless LANs. Other areas with strong showings included QoS and resource management, ad hoc and sensor networks, and wireless multimedia systems. From the outset, we could see where recent research interest lay and could make sure that the theme was still going in the right direction.

Software systems that used to be relatively autonomous entities such as e.g. accounting systems, order-entry systems etc. are now interlinked in large networks comprising extensive information infrastructures. What earlier used to be stand-alone proprietary systems are now for the most part replaced by more or less standardized interdependent systems that form large networks of production and use. Organizations have to make decisions about what office suite to purchase? The easiest option is to continuously upgrade the existing office suite to the latest version, but the battle between WordPerfect and Microsoft Word demonstrated that the choice is not obvious. What instant messenger network to join for global communication? Preferably the one most colleagues and friends use; AOL Instant Messenger, Microsoft Messenger, and ICQ represent three satisfactory, but disjunctive alternatives. Similarly organizations abandon their portfolio of homegrown IT systems and replace them with a single Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Several ERP alternatives exist on the market, but which is the right one for you? The argumentation and rationale behind these considerations are obviously related to the technological and social networks we are embedded in, but it is not always easy to specify how. Networked Information Technologies: Diffusion and Adoption offers contributions from academics and practitioners who study networked information systems from a diffusion and adoption point of view. Themes related to the conceptualisation of diffusion and adoption of networked information systems are discussed along with studies of the diffusion of networked information systems in public sector institutions and private businesses. The workshop was held at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Palo Alto, California, on April 22–23, 2003. Informationprocessinginsensornetworksisaninterdisciplinaryresearcharea with deep connections to signal processing, networking and protocols, databases and information management, as well as distributed algorithms. Because of - vances in MEMS microsensors, wireless networking, and embedded processing, ad hoc networks of sensors are becoming increasingly available for commercial andmilitaryapplicationssuchasenvironmentalmonitoring(e.g.,tra?c,habitat, security), industrial sensing and diagnostics (e.g., factories, appliances), inf- structure maintenance (e.g., power grids, water distribution, waste disposal), and battle?eld awareness (e.g., multitarget tracking). From the engineering and computing point of view, sensor networks have become a rich source of problems in communication protocols, sensor tasking and control, sensor fusion, distributed databases and algorithms, probabilistic reasoning, system/software architecture, design methodologies, and evaluation metrics. This workshop took a systemic approach to address crosslayer issues, from the physical sensor layer to the sensor signal processing and networking levels and then all the way to the applications. Following the successful 1st Workshop on Collaborative Signal and Inf- mation Processing in Sensor Networks at PARC in 2001, this new workshop brought together researchers from academia, industry, and government to p- sent and discuss recent work concerning various aspects of sensor networks such as information organization, querying, routing, and self-organization, with anemphasis on the high-level information processing tasks that these networks are designed to perform.

This volume contains technical papers and panel position papers selected from the proceedings of the International Symposium on Information Systems and Technologies for Network Society, held together with the IPSJ (information processing society of Japan) National Convention, in September 1997. Papers were submitted from all over the world, especially from Japan, Korea and China. Since these countries are believed to form one of the major computer manufacturing centers in the world, a panel on “Computer Science Education for the 21st Century” was set up. A special session on the Japanese project on Software Engineering invited representative researchers from the project, which is supported by the Ministry of Education, Japan.

SICON'97 is the fifth conference since the first SICON, organized in 1989. It aims to provide a forum for the presentation and dissemination of results in computer communications and networking research.SICON'97 has a single-track technical programme comprising less than half of the total number of full papers that were submitted to the International Programme Committee of well-known and respected experts for review. The technical programme covers original research and development in the following areas: high speed networks, ATM, optical networks, wireless and mobile networks, performance measurement and modeling, network security, resource sharing and quality of service, internetworking, network architecture and protocols, and distributed computing.

This book is aimed at scientists, technologists, engineers, and undergraduate and graduate students involved in analytical and process biochemistry and biotechnology. It reviews the potentialities of light-emitting reaction associated with the sensor approach.The book introduces the concepts of sensors and biosensors and places bio- and chemi-luminescent sensors in the general context of biosensors. It then briefly describes luminescence phenomena and provides some basic knowledge necessary for understanding and exploiting light-emitting reactions. These luminescence reactions, important from an analytical standpoint, are described. Also the applications of bio- and chemi-luminescence which make use of immobilized reagents are explained. Finally, there is discussion of bio- and chemi-luminescent sensors, most of them including fiber optics.
