A large number of exports of cheap industrial products completed the initial accumulation of capital in China, but this manufacturing industry, which has not mastered the basic technologies, is very fragile. With the development of science and technology, the economy of various countries is gradually globalizing. China is currently the second largest economy in the world, and due to its large population, this also makes China a huge sales market, but due to the large amount of excess capacity, China’s excess industrial market cannot be digested by its own country. In addition to the modernization of China’s manufacturing industry, it is inevitable that Chinese industry will simultaneously enter the world market. China’s manufacturing industry will face difficulties, but at the same time it has its own unique advantages.

The rapid development of the labor division system of the global value chain not only improves the technological level of developing countries but also creates opportunities for developed countries that dominate the global value chain to transfer pollution-intensive production links to developing countries. When faced with the pressure of environmental governance, the production efficiency of enterprises in the value chain may change significantly. Therefore, this study establishes a global value chain analysis framework, considering environmental factors, that is, the global environmental value chain (GEVC). It discusses the impact of the embeddedness of enterprises in the GEVC on their production efficiencies. Based on the consolidated data from 2000 to 2006 in the China Industry Business Performance Data and the China customs database, the following conclusion is drawn: The embeddedness of enterprises in the GEVC reduces the production efficiency of enterprises, but the changes of production efficiencies of enterprises with different profitability in the GEVC are significantly different. Specifically, the embeddedness of enterprises with positive earnings in the GEVC can improve production efficiency, while that of enterprises with negative earnings in the GEVC will reduce production efficiency. Furthermore, the learning effect and the competition effect reinforce the positive effect of GEVC on enterprise production efficiency, while the "capture effect" weakens this effect, and the scale effect is insignificant. Moreover, foreign-funded enterprises benefit more from the improvement of production efficiency that resulted from GEVC embeddedness.

The high technology (high-tech) industry of China has gained a key strategic position in the Chinese economic goals. In this positioning, foreign direct investment (FDI) and technological innovation have emerged as strong pillars of the high-tech industry. However, there are growing concerns of carbon emission from this industry which is still debatable. In this context, this study measures the effect of FDI and technology innovation on carbon emissions in the high-tech industry from 28 provinces of China. The study uses the provincial data for China over the period 2000–2018. In addition to examining unit root properties, structural breaks, and cointegration, this study uses quantile regression for estimating long-run relationships among study variables. The findings reveal the negative impact of FDI on carbon emissions. Technology innovation positively impacts in the initial three quantiles, whereas negatively impacts in the next six quantiles. These results indicate that FDI and technology innovation have shaped the energy intensity in the high-tech industry, which causes fluctuation in carbon emissions over time. After controlling the effects of urbanization, energy intensity, and economic growth, this study recommends that policymakers should emphasize on the heterogeneous effects of FDI and technology-lead emissions at different quantiles during the process of CO2 emission reduction.

As one of the technology-intensive industries, the electric vehicle (EV) industry has attracted the attention of the Chinese government. It has provided various incentives for the purchase of EVs, including tax incentives, policy loans at preferential interest rates and the establishment of charging facilities. EV production technology developed rapidly and sales of EVs increased significantly during the 2010s. The role of the government seems to have been of vital importance to the rapid development of the EV industry in China. To improve this further, it would be helpful for the government to efficiently coordinate various policy measures benefitting the EV industry and create a more suitable social environment for consumers to use EVs. The government should also carefully consider how to improve the applicability of EVs in different regional surroundings. In addition, efficient collaboration between the electronics industry and the automobile industry would be critical.

PurposeIn recent years, the People's Republic of China has made remarkable progress in science and technology. The Chinese industry is competing for leadership in cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, robotics, artificial intelligence, aerospace and green energy. This article aims to analyze: What role do industrial parks, especially Suzhou Industrial Park, play in upgrading technology to encourage independent innovation and economic development? How SIP is related to the Belt and Road Initiative?Design/methodology/approachThis research summarizes China's most important scientific and technological reforms and policies and in particular the Torch Program. In addition, it develops a case study of the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) by analyzing documents, bibliography and presenting data. It ends with a case study of the role of SIP in the Belt and Road Initiative analyzing the Great Stone Park in Belarus.FindingsThis article highlights that: China's experience clearly shows that the "visible hand" of the State plays a very important role in economic development and technological catch-up. All of them are implemented from a strategy linking the national objectives with the local ones, this is done from a top-down perspective. As an important aspect of economic and social development, China's experience in promoting indigenous innovation in science and technology provides a relevant example for developing countries.Research limitations/implicationsThere are few academic literature on Great Stone Industrial Park.Practical implicationsThe international cooperation of the SIP with the technology parks throughout the BRI-countries provides relevant information to deepen collaboration in this field and could contribute to closing the technological gap in developing countries.Originality/valueThe role of the SIP in the Belt and Road initiative is an under research topic. There is few bibliography discussing the impacts of the cooperation in science and technology in the framework of the BRI.

It is important to develop the advanced coal to chemicals industry (ACCI) against a backdrop of coal-based energy structures, excessive imported oil and natural gas, and strict environmental constraints in China. In this study, the technology and industry of China's ACCI are reviewed to explain the effect of using coal to replace oil and natural gas, and the corresponding resource and environmental burdens that this will create. Development trends in technology and industry are also proposed to explore future scenarios. The review shows that although excellent progress has been made on an industrial scale, demonstrative level, and in terms of technology and equipment, the lack of strategic understanding, severe external constraints, partly underdeveloped technologies, and weak foundations must be immediately addressed. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the importance that the ACCI has on the energy revolution and energy system. Based on technological innovation, a variety of external factors should be considered as a whole with emphasis on filling the knowledge gap of theoretical foundations and industry standards to support high-quality development for ACCI.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and China's state-led model for economic globalization more generally, have attracted controversy: Are state-led overseas investment and lending driven by strategic motives or market rationale? How have the recipient economies reacted to the influx of Chinese capital? This special issue sheds light on these questions by first outlining the fragmented state system driving the BRI, a system featuring both Beijing's strategic logic at the top and market considerations in policy implementation. The role of the state is unpacked further in China's globalizing coal industry and in the growth of Chinese industry export to BRI countries. Finally, the issue explores the mechanisms behind public backlash and political pushback facing China in Zambia and Australia. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to shift China's relationship with the world, this special issue contributes to a more nuanced understanding of themodus operandiof Chinese capital going global.

The construction industry is a pillar industry of China's national economy but its problems of high energy consumption, high pollution, and low energy efficiency are increasingly prominent. The study on the energy efficiency of the construction industry is of great significance for improving development quality and achieving the goal of energy saving and emission reduction. In this paper, a three-stage undesirable SBM-DEA model was employed to measure the energy efficiency in the construction industry during 2005-2016. The CO2 directly emitted by the construction industry and indirectly emitted in the production of building materials were used as the undesirable output and the three-stage framework was employed to analyze and eliminate the influence of external environment. The empirical results showed that low efficiency of management in the construction industry is an important factor leading to the low level of energy efficiency in China's construction industry. For the energy efficiency value before and after adjustment, the "high-high" provinces have made full use of the superior external environment by their high management level, while the "high-low" provinces need to fully realize the potential in promoting energy efficiency of its external environment by improving its own management of the construction industry. On the contrary, the "low-high" provinces need to improve the external environment to ease its restrictions on the level of management in the construction industry. Environmental factors and management level should be considered simultaneously for different provinces to improve energy efficiency of the construction industry.

The crisis of the world economic system, erupted in the end of 2019 against the background of COVID-19 expansion resulted in considerable drop of the world steel products production practically in all the countries of the world. Decrease of steel production began in the IIH of 2019, mainly in July-August of 2019 and further in March-April of 2020. In the IQ of 2020, the world steel production declined by 1.4% down to 443 million tons comparing with the analogue period of 2019. At that China demonstrated growth by 1.2%, while in the EC counties the decrease accounted for 10%, in North America counties – by 4%, in South America countries – 7.1%, other countries of Asia, Africa and CIS also demonstrated the decrease. The dynamics of prices variation on some steel products, iron ore presented, which give the idea of the market state and tendencies of its variation in 2019–2020. In China in April of 2020 after cancellation of quarantine measures, a restoration of the industry began, the economy of China transferred from decline to growth and an active growth of domestic consumption of steel products got a significant effect not only on the volume of its production, but also made corrections in China’s behavior at the world market. As a result of year 2020, steel production in China exceeded one billion tons – 1054.4 million tons, which is 5.2% more comparing with 2019. Production of finished products increased also, import of iron ore into China in 2020 accounted for 1172 billion tons, which is 9.5% more comparing with 2019. As a result of 2020, the steel companies of China exported 53.7 million tons of steel, which is 16.5% lower than the 2019 index. Further the Chinese export will be contributed by an increase of demand at the world market and cancellation of restriction measures, imposed by some countries. While at all the regions of the world the crisis resulted in termination of some projects or their delays, in China against the background of the pandemic, several companies did nor cancel their investment plans as well as construction and commissioning of new plants was going on. Under conditions of the crisis the support of the state was very important, since the demand declined in all the industries, therefore many countries took urgent measures for stabilization of economies and support of population. Within the period of the pandemic, the China government bodies elaborated some measures to overcome its negative effect on the economy. In particular, the measures include allocation of money to stimulate the domestic consumption of steel products. In total in 2020 it was planned to invest about 800 billion of yuan (about USD 115 billion) in capital assets. According to forecasts, in 2021 comparing with 2020, the production and apparent consumption of steel in China will increase approximately by 2%, actual demand will increase by higher rate. The steel products with high added value will be in higher demand, including flat rolled products, rolled products of special steels, seamless pipes etc.

This paper investigates the effect of import penetration as a cause of the acceleration of technological development. The trade intensity and engagement level have been a long-debated bilateral trade issue, especially when there is a regional supply chain. China is the base of a relatively big regional supply chain formed in East Asia. Korea is one of the key contributors to this unique trade structure. This paper aims to illustrate Korea’s import penetration as one of the key contributors to China’s industry-level technological development. This paper adapts Autor’s baseline investigation on the import penetration and follows the latest research of a Key Paper using different country and industry group. As a robustness check, we analyzed a periodic gap effect of the independent variable to reflect the time between the period when a relatively high competition in each industry has occurred and the time firms in each industry became more competitive. Regardless of the large size of Chinese economy, Korea’s import penetration over Chinese industry showed a significant influence. Although the influence vary differently over each industry, industries where Korea has relatively high competitiveness showed significant effect over technological development. Through the research of periodic gap effect, this paper proved the intuitive idea of the time gap existence. Apparently, the import penetration of t-1 showed stronger coefficient than t and diminishes after t-2. Existing studies in trade somewhat ignored such analysis between countries where relatively big difference in the scale of economy exist. This paper tried to describe that even there is a big difference in scale between sample countries, if there is a significant level of engagement and a global level competitiveness, small countries could affect the large ones. This paper used a time lag variable to analyze the different period of observation over variables.

Mobile payments are becoming increasingly popular around the world. In countries like China, they appear in the form of barcode payments and are poised to replace cash and bank card payments for day-to-day consumer purchases. Against that backdrop, this paper analyzes the availability of barcode standardization as an approach to interoperability and ultimately to enhanced competition in the mobile payment industry. It uses the Chinese industry as a study case, which features a duopoly structure and shifting competitive dynamics among three definable groups of market players. This paper confirms that standardization can enhance competition and argues that, in this case, a government-mandated standardization is preferable to a voluntary one because the latter is prone to financial market failures. Along this line, this paper makes three suggestions for furthering the barcode standardization. It also advises prudence and competitive neutrality for the financial regulator and calls for more active involvements of the competition and data protection authorities.

The issue on the first principles of Internet building in China has been considered. An overview of establishment has been made and the specifics of the development of the Chinese information technology industry in recent years has been analysed. The influence of the state policy on digital technology market has been studied. The principles of Chinese authorities’ actions in relation to the domestic and foreign high tech markets have been highlighted. The causes of the Chinese industry rapid development, based on the state activity aimed at supporting the local manufacturers, have been analysed. Protectionism policy defining the government control pattern has been evaluated. Chinese development main program scale, embracing not only national, but also world economics, has been considered. It has been shown how domestic economy policy coincides with Chinese government foreign policy and how it is directly reflected in it. A parallel has been drawn between the principle of establishing of social credit system and the idea of counting merits and drawbacks, laying in the basis of finely built system of rewards and punishments of traditional Chinese society. A connection of this tradition with the official goal of the system, stated by the government of China to teach the Chinese society to become more honest by complete surveillance over people, has been shown. It has been shown how this system classifies people into several categories, creating the lists of those to reward and those to censure. The mechanism of how the state uses private companies’ resources, applying all its power to influence on them, has been considered. A critical analysis of the foundations of the system from the point of view of Western democracy values has been carried out. An overview of development prospects of the studied system and the assessment of the risks associated with it have been made. It has been noted that despite the fact that the basic ideas for the system are borrowed from the international practice of the financial sector, making decisions on authorizing going beyond the judicial system and transferring the classification of people in the lists of good and bad to the level of algorithms run counter to the principles of European and international law.

The paper develops and implements a methodology for assessing the role of energy prices and new investment in reducing energy intensity in Chinese industry. Analysing a unique panel data set which reports firm‐level energy consumption and price from 1997 to 2004, the paper finds: the energy prices, not only the current but also the past energy prices, are key factors that driving down firms' energy intensity for all three types of firms: state‐owned enterprises (SOEs), domestic non‐SOEs (NSOEs) and foreign‐funded firms (FFEs); furthermore, SOEs exhibit a robust price‐investment channel: responding to rising energy prices, SOEs tend to invest in new energy‐efficient capital, through which SOEs reduce energy intensity; the same price‐investment channels are less robust for non‐SOEs or foreign‐funded firms.

Purpose Although recent studies have increased attention on the effects of related and unrelated variety on innovation, a Chinese test has until now been missing from the literature. This paper aims to investigate how related and unrelated variety affect regional innovation in Chinese provinces. In particular, emphasis was placed on differentiating the analysis for the industry and services sectors at a detailed sectoral level. Design/methodology/approach This paper’s sample is composed of 30 provinces in China from 2003 to 2016. Feasible generalized least squares was used to estimate the effects of related and unrelated variety on regional innovation. Findings The results show that related variety in all sectors promotes regional innovation, whereas unrelated variety in all sectors does not play a role. In-depth analyses were performed by comparing the industry and services sectors. Only related variety in the industry sector and unrelated variety in the services sector promote regional innovation, whereas unrelated variety in the industry sector exerts a negative effect. After dividing the country into eastern, central and western regions, different findings appear in the sub-samples. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on evolutionary economic geography and innovation by exploring how related and unrelated variety promote regional innovation in a developing country context (China). It also sheds light on the sectoral and regional differences in the influence of related and unrelated variety on regional innovation.

A systematic literature review was conducted to study the possible antecedents of the performance. It found a number of factors that affect the performance of the creative Chinese industry; the major focus was on absorptive capacity, entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation. The study provides a conceptual framework, to elaborate the combination with a significant effect on performance of the firms and it is a unique contribution to literature and practice.

Pig farming is becoming a key industry of China’s rural economy in recent years. The current pig farming is still relatively manual, lack of latest Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and scientific management methods. This paper proposes an industrial internet platform for massive pig farming, namely, IIP4MPF, which aims to leverage intelligent pig breeding, production rate and labor productivity with the use of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data intelligence. We conducted requirement analysis for IIP4MPF using software engineering methods, designed the IIP4MPF system for an integrated solution to digital, interconnected, intelligent pig farming. The practice demonstrates that the IIP4MPF platform significantly improves pig farming industry in pig breeding and productivity.

China-Mongolia economic and trade relations have experienced different stages of development along with changes in international political and economic relations. China has become Mongolia’s largest trading partner and largest investor for more than a decade. Therefore, studying the bilateral trade structure and characteristics of China and Mongolia will further promote economic cooperation between the two sides. Based on the previous research literature, the author conducts an analysis at the industrial level, making the bilateral trade structure more specific to product classification. And through research, it is found that the comparative advantage products of China and Mongolia have formed perfect complementary, and Mongolia’s resource-oriented products have obvious advantages, but China prefer to export manufactory goods, which is exactly what Mongolia needs. So based on the results of index, the author give the political suggestion to contributed to the bilateral trade development between China and Mongolia.

Corporate governance and its associated concerns had no bearing on Chinese industry management before its national economic reform in the early 1980s. The government's intention has been tomake all state-owned enterprisesmore effective and efficient than they previously were by gradually introducing Western enterprise methods with a capitalist market approach. The article explores the notion of corporate governance in the context of Chinese football by studying the emerging labour markets and management of professional football players to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issues concerning the governance of Chinese sports and its human resource management. It seeks to contribute to the development of stakeholder theory as an important analytical framework on Chinese management studies in the field of professional sport during its economic transition.

An emission inventory of carbonyl sulfide (COS) from primary anthropogenic sources in China was compiled from 2010 to 2015. The national total emission was estimated at 174 Gg S yr−1 in 2015, with an annually average sustainable growth rate of 7.2% from 2010 to 2015. Industrial sources, biomass burning, coal combustion, agricultural sources and vehicle exhaust contributed 68.2%, 22.0%, 6.1%, 2.2%, and 1.5%, respectively, of total COS emissions in 2015. Aluminum production, carbon black production, titania production, coke production, pulp and paper industry, were the main industrial sources of COS, with the emission about 118 Gg S yr−1 COS in 2015, accounting for 98.5% of total direct emissions from the Chinese industry. The distribution of COS emissions in China showed significant differences at the provincial level. In Shandong and Xinjiang province, they were much bigger than other provinces, with total emissions of 31 and 15 Gg S yr−1, respectively. Uncertainty analysis of COS emission inventories showed that the emission range was 70–267 Gg S yr−1 at a 95% confidence interval. In this study, COS emissions in China were much higher than prior underestimated estimations, even for Asian and global emissions, which could be resolved part of missing sources in the global COS budget.

Analyzing what type of agglomeration economy is more conducive to the growth of industrial green total-factor productivity (GTFP) has important reference value and practical significance for the green sustainable development of Chinese industry. Based on the provincial panel data of 25 industrial industries in China from 2005 to 2017, this paper uses the meta-frontier method and the super-efficiency non-radial directional distance function to measure GTFP and its decomposition. It also uses a spatial econometric model to empirically analyze the effects of both the specialized economy and the diversified economy on GTFP and the mechanisms of action. The results show that GTFP and its decomposition have significant temporal and spatial heterogeneity. Both the specialized economy and the diversified economy have significant roles in promoting the growth of GTFP, but they have differences in degrees of effect. Among them, the industrial complementarity in the diversified economy has the strongest role in promoting the growth of GTFP. In addition, the specialized economy promotes the growth of GTFP mainly by improving technological efficiency and promoting technical progress, while the diversified economy promotes the growth of GTFP primarily by promoting technical progress and narrowing the technological gap.

The setting of a CO2 emission peak target (CEPT) will have a profound impact on Chinese industry. An objective assessment of this impact is of great significance, both for understanding/applying the forcing mechanism of CEPT, and for promoting the optimization of China’s industrial structure and the low-carbon transformation of Chinese industry at a lower cost. Based on analysis of the internal logic and operation of the forcing mechanism of CEPT, we employed the STIRPAT model. This enabled us to predict the peak path of China’s CO2 emissions, select the path values that would achieve the CEPT with the year 2030 as the constraint condition, construct a multi-objective and multi-constraint input/output optimization model, employ the genetic algorithm to solve the model, and explore the industrial structure optimization and low-carbon transformation of Chinese industry. The results showed that the setting of CEPT will have a significant suppression effect on high-carbon emission industries and a strong boosting effect on low-carbon emission industries. The intensity of the effect is positively correlated with the target intensity of the CO2 emissions peak. Under the effect of the forcing mechanism of CEPT, Chinese industry can realize a low-carbon transition and the industrial structure can realize optimization. The CEPT is in line with sustainable development goals, but the setting of CEPT may risk causing excessive shrinkage of basic industries—which should be prevented.

The industry selection effect occurring from the impact of environmental regulation on foreign direct investment (FDI) in China is heterogeneous. Based on the extended game theory model, and by using panel data of 35 Chinese industries from 2005 to 2014, this study constructs a system of simultaneous equations to explore the dynamic effect of environmental regulation on FDI in terms of industry selection decisions. Specifically, three-stage least square analysis method (3SLS) of simultaneous equations is utilized to check robustness of the results under different standards. Results reveal that environmental regulation promotes the technological innovation within the Chinese industry and attract larger foreign capital investment. While the influx of capital further boosts the technological progress, a benign interaction effect was observed between the technological innovation and foreign investment. Findings of our study show that the policy of market borrowing technology is more effective, and the implementation of the new environmental policy will intensify the strategies between managers and enterprises. Results of our study show a positive interaction between R&D funding and foreign capital flows. Enhanced coordination activity within industrial organizations will generate more effective organizational and technological innovation, and attract a large flow of FDI. In addition, industry sample results highlight that a compensation effect of technological innovation in the raw materials and manufacturing industry, though environmental regulation of high-tech industries will generate a balance effect with respect to technological innovation. The government should emphasize on the enhancement of execution and effectiveness of environmental regulation, enhancing FDI and enlightening the synergistic possessions of environmental regulation and FDI.

The paper investigates factors to financing from venture capital (VC) in the Peer to Peer (P2P) lending industry of China. We focus on the signal effects of founder-CEOs, human capital, and legitimacy on venture capital investment. An important issue for entrepreneurship research is how to reduce t information asymmetry between entrepreneurs and potential investors. This paper builds on the signal theory to explain how new ventures can signal their qualities and promising businesses to potential investors to obtain external investment. By using a total of 2388 new ventures in China’s P2P lending industry, this paper analyzed the effects of factors on VC investment. We found that the founder-CEO status and the legitimacy of third-party signals are crucial to obtain the support of venture capital. We found that the CEO’s international experience has positively significant on VC financing, but the industry experience of CEOs is insignificant to get VC investment. The results indicate that new venture should pay more attention to build the ways of signaling and legitimacy of new venture to get external resource providers.

The construction industry is the pillar industry of China’s national economy. According to the statistics of the National Bureau of Statistics, the GDP in 2016 was 744.127 billion yuan, while the total construction output value was 193.567 billion yuan, accounting for 6.5 percent of China’s GDP. The construction industry has played a pivotal role in promoting social development. Construction projects have always belonged to typical high-risk industries, and they will be affected by many factors, and these factors are mostly from the social environment and the natural environment, which makes it difficult to realize the expected construction period, cost, quality, safety, etc., of the construction project. The objectives, especially for large- and medium-sized construction projects, involve a lot of specialties, a wide range, a long construction period, and a huge amount of investment. Once the risks appear, the consequences are unimaginable. In addition, construction projects will be affected by accidental factors during the implementation process. If not handled in time, it will seriously affect the normal operation of construction projects. In view of the above problems, this article aims to study the risk management research of construction project management under the multimedia environment of the Internet of Things. Combining the characteristics of mobile construction projects, various problems are analyzed in the construction process of construction projects. This paper proposes a multimedia-based construction project management system, construction project quality management objectives and principles, and schedule risk prediction. The experimental results of this paper show that taking the construction project under the multimedia environment as an example, the communication management and quality control management of the construction project under the multimedia environment are studied. Through the combination of theory and practice, the work of construction projects under the multimedia environment of the Internet of Things is guaranteed to be completed on time and with high quality.

COVID-19 has generated an unprecedented impact on Chinese tourism since the beginning of 2020. The Chinese industry has used pauses in the offline sector and an advanced domestic online business infrastructure to follow times' paces. Tourist companies have greatly enlarged the online department's size and started to pursue the innovation of quality and intelligence. The key question underpinning the content is the pattern and style of tourism in China will be like with the guidance of Rural Revitalization Policy and'14th five-year cultural tourism plans.

Based on data from the China Industry Business Performance Database from 1998 to 2007 and the time of establishment of the administrative examination and approval center in each administrative division in China, this study attempts to empirically determine the effects of the reform of the administrative examination and approval system on the efficiency of resource allocation from the perspectives of the degree of enterprise-level productivity dispersion. The empirical results showed that the reform of the administrative examination and approval system significantly reduced the degree of productivity dispersion among enterprises in an industry, in addition to enhancing the efficiency of resource allocation in the industry. A further analysis of heterogeneity revealed that the reform of the administrative examination and approval system yielded greater enhancements of the efficiency of resource allocation in industries with lower entry and exit rates.

How did Asia become a late love of me? I was touched by the common fates of Germany and Korea, both of which were divided arbitrarily in the aftermath of World War II. Not surprisingly, Asian managers differ from business leaders in the West. Through my immersion in the Far East, I was lucky to experience and accompany the fabulous ascent of China. Over the last few decades, I saw how Chinese industry had to change and continues to evolve. I signed one of the first MBA degree certificates ever awarded in China, and witnessed the birth of the Hermann Simon Business School there. I got to know China’s megacities, but also enjoyed the endless expanses of its beautiful countryside. Nonetheless, China—and Asia in general—remains a mystery to me. Will I ever decode and understand them?

In recent years, building information modeling (BIM) has been the focus in the construction industry and an attractive topic in the construction management research field. However, no research concentrated on the analysis of the BIM research progress in Chinese industry on basis of quantitative statistical analysis of first-tire Chinese journal publications in the last decade. Based on the analysis of BIM papers published in Chinese first-tier journals from 2008 to 2017, this paper explores the research progress in terms of the change of number of publications, the research method adopted, stage in the life-cycle analyzed, and type of projects studied. It is found that in the 10 years’ period, the average growth rate of BIM journal papers is 63.84%, with 90.55% of them being published in the later 5 years. Case study is the most popular research method. There are more BIM papers concentrating on the analysis of construction and design stages, than on the analysis of life-cycle and operation stages. Building projects and railway projects are the most attractive projects to BIM researchers. The findings are valuable for the Chinese researchers to understand more clearly about the research trends of BIM topic in China and conduct research on this topic in the future.

In the late twentieth century, as China became the world's manufacturing hub, global nonstate actors focused on sustainability came to develop and apply voluntary sustainability standards (VSS). This chapter analyzes how this effort has played and is playing out in China. Initially, the driving force was global nonstate actors who sought to impose VSS on China supply chain components. Then, China nonstate actors, especially trade or industrial associations (shehui tuanti), came to develop their own standards, both for domestic application and application as China industry and investment goes abroad. The chapter identifies key factors that are emerging in the China VSS shehui tuanti standard development phase and then the standard implementation phase that will determine the results of these efforts. The chapter shows significant progress in relation to institutional development and outputs and outcomes, but the impact in sustainability improvement remains to be seen. The chapter explains that a core question in this regard is how well the factors in standard development and implementation can succeed in addressing the core problem of the “trust deficit” arising from the fact that the upstream actors (producers and manufacturers) are not substantially engaged across the entire supply chain.

Using new measures of expanded Internet access in China and internet-based search, we examine how competitive shocks from China impact U.S. innovation through the markets for innovation and existing products. We identify shocks to innovation competition using the geography of Chinese internet penetration and Chinese import data. Increases in the ability of Chinese industry peers to gather knowledge through the internet are followed by reductions in U.S. R&D investment and subsequent patents, and increased patenting by Chinese firms. The new Chinese patents also cite the U.S. firms patents at a high rate, consistent with increased intellectual property competition. In this study, we introduce the concept of differentiated quality inputs with knowledge-driven specifications for research and development (R&amp, D) under an open economy to the endogenous growth model of knowledge spillover. Using matching industry enterprise and customs data from 2001 to 2007, which is representative of micro data at the Chinese industry level, we theoretically analyze the influence of the quality and variety of imported products on Chinese enterprises&rsquo, innovation and economic growth. We find that, first, the improvement of the quality and variety of new imported products can promote enterprise innovation. Second, new imported intermediate inputs and capital goods, new imported high-technology products, and products imported from Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries have stronger promoting effects on enterprise innovation. We conclude that imported products stimulate the growth of the economy through two channels: expanding the variety and increasing the quality of inputs. To verify the stability of our model, we conducted robustness tests by defining new imported products based on a base year, measuring enterprise innovation by the number of patent applications, and measuring the quality of new imported products in a new way.

Based on the statistical data of 34 major ports in China from 2010 to 2017, this paper analyzes the impact of One Belt and One Road promotion on the number of active ships at sea, gross tonnage of ships at sea, the operation situation, and the tourism situation in coastal areas. The empirical results show that the promotion of One Belt and One Road has a positive impact on the shipping industry of China's coastal ports, which shows that the overall marine industrial scale will increase due to the promotion of One Belt and One Road.

The purpose of this study is to analyze China's TV industry policy from the perspective of actor-network theory, focusing particularly on smart TV policy. With the rapid development of smart technologies, smart TV has become an important trend in the Chinese industry. Using the theoretical framework of actor-network theory, this study examined the main factors leading to the rapid growth of China's smart TV industry. It also compared smart TV policy to Internet Protocol TV policy to consider the implications of the Chinese governing strategy for the future of telecommunications. The study's findings show that China has a firm grip over the smart TV industry through licensing and standardization. The traditional policy tools of licensing and technological standardization that have been used to boost and control China's domestic industry are also being used in the smart TV industry. These strategic tools are designed to protect the domestic smart TV industry. China's stance toward smart TV regulation also sheds light on the future development of telecommunications in China. By combining actor-network theory and institutionalization, this paper appreciates the complex realities of new media industry and the active role of technology in the Chinese context.

We investigate the effect of stock pledges on the firms' performance and risk in energy industry of China. The results show that the performance of firms decreases in the existence of stock pledge. Stock pledge generally decreases stock return volatility, except for the increase in forced liquidation pressure. Stock pledge increases downside risk and crashes. Finally, we demonstrate the different effects of the stock pledge in various regions of China.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate to what extent and for which reasons the codes of conduct and social audits of multinational corporations (MNCs) have failed to change practices within Chinese factories. A special attention is given to the social compliance initiatives (SCIs) and multi-stakeholder initiatives (MSIs) which did not overcome the main obstacles of the compliance approach. Design/methodology/approach This research is based on a fieldwork in China, including 36 semi-constructed interviews with practitioners involved in corporate social responsibility (CSR), participant observation in the CSR programme of the International Labour Organisation office in Beijing and several visits of factories involved in CSR programmes. Secondary sources are used to estimate the distribution of value added along global value chains (GVCs). Findings The codes of conduct and social audits tend to reproduce the domination of MNCs within GVCs. This paper highlights some obstacles – and opportunities – for CSR appropriate to the Chinese context. Research limitations/implications Only a few MNCs agreed to meet the author and speak openly. No one allowed the author to visit their suppliers’ factories. Practical implications The findings of this study suggest that the most widespread approach to CSR by MNCs is flawed. More attention should be given to specific institutional contexts and to workers’ participation. Originality/value CSR discourse and practices in China are put in the context of GVCs and in the transformation of Chinese industry and labour relations. This method allows going beyond a case study approach. Instrumentations of several SCIs and MSIs are also analysed in detail.

Taking smart manufacturing as a strategy for industrial development, China has put forward a people-oriented policy and launched a series of plans for smart manufacturing talent education (SMTE). The demand for smart manufacturing talents in ten priority areas and the industrial applications in China is very huge. Therefore, in this paper, a reference system of SMTE in China is presented, which includes discipline system, training system, practice system, and assessment system. In order to further refine the architecture of smart manufacturing system, a reference course system was proposed; the system contains seven layers, which are basic layer, technique layer, implementation layer, management layer, platform layer, application layer, and industrialization layer. Finally, nine stakeholders of the common operation body were investigated, and a reference implementation of SMTE in China was put forward. In this paper, the smart manufacturing talent education reference system, reference model, and related reference subsystems can be a very useful guideline for Chinese industry and education to design, set, and carry out the smart manufacturing talent education system. At the same time, the system has its reference value for the improvement of China’s smart manufacturing system architecture.

In this study, we have compared Germany's “Industry 4.0” and China's “Made-in-China 2025” and estimated China's locus in “Made-in-China 2025”. “Made-in-China 2025” has clear goals, measures and sector focus. Its guiding principles are to enhance industrial capability through innovation-driven manufacturing, optimize the structure of Chinese industry, emphasize quality over quantity, train and attract talent, and achieve green manufacturing and environment. Data show that currently China is no longer the lowest–cost labor market; it is being squeezed by newly emerging low-cost producers such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Meanwhile, China is not the strongest player in the high-tech arena; well-established industrialized nations, the US, Germany, and Japan, have all effectively deployed digital technology to create new industrial environments, produce new products, and improve their well-established brands. Having analyzed the data from the World Bank and China's National Bureau of Statistics, we find an upward trajectory in China in manufacturing capability development, research and development commitment, and human capital investment. However, implementing an ambitious strategic plan such as “Made-in-China 2025” is coupled with challenges. This research helps us understand the relationship between technological entrepreneurship and socio-economic changes in emerging economies such as China. Furthermore, the experience accumulated in China can be referenced by both emerging economies and developed nations to advance their technological entrepreneurship.

The prospective cost-benefit of CSP (concentrated solar power) is the attention focus for policy-making and investment decisions. In order to analyze cost-benefit evolution of CSP, the paper adopted the net present value and discounted cash flows techniques to develop a mathematical model, and calculated LCOE (levelized cost of energy) of CSP between 2018 and 2050 by taking the CSP industry of China as an example. The results show that: Firstly, CSP has a large potential in the LCOE reduction, and the values of parabolic trough and solar tower CSP systems reduce by 46%–57% and 47%–56% from 2018 to 2050, respectively. Secondly, predicted evolution for the LCOE of CSP strongly depends, not only on the cumulative installed capacity determined by the specific growth paths of Blue Map and Roadmap Scenarios, but also on the learning curves impacted by technical progress and experience accumulation. Thirdly, to select the sites with higher direct normal irradiation and land cost exemption is crucial to improve cost-benefit evolution of CSP. Lastly, the expected returns (i.e. discount rate) have important effect on the LCOE evolution of CSP, high expected returns lead to high the LCOE, and vice versa.

Purpose The research article looks at how well China is managing its tech skills resources in major industries. Design/methodology/approach The IBM Institute for Business Value in collaboration with Oxford Economics recently conducted a specific survey of more than 5,600 global business, government and education leaders on the topic of global workforce skills. More than 400 of the 5,600 executives surveyed were from China, representing 18 specific industries from across all major regions. The insights and opinions of these 400-plus Chinese executives inform this report about tech skills resources in China. Findings Seventy-one percent of corporate recruiters in China, say they cannot find applicants with sufficient practical experience, and 72 percent of the Chinese industry leaders surveyed report that gaps evidenced in the core skills of newly recruited employees is the single most significant business challenge they face. Research limitations/implications The interviews were performed in 2016 and the data analyzed in 2017 and 2018. Practical implications Seventy-one percent of Chinese executives believe that individuals should bear significant personal responsibility in developing and maintaining work skills. Originality/value This is a large sample of executives in major Chinese corporations and some representatives of Chinese educational institutions. Their insights about China’s talent gaps and what it is doing on many fronts to modernize its talent resources should be of interest to players in all competitive economies.
